The role of chronic stress in the development of chronic diseases, especially multimorbidity, through the pathways of increasing allostatic load, and finally, allostatic overload (the state when a compensatory mechanism is likely to fail) is being emphasized. However, allostatic load is a dynamic measure that changes depending on sex, gender, age, level and type of stress, experience of a stressful situation, and coping behaviors. Many other factors such as race, ethnicity, working environment, lifestyle, and circadian rhythm of sleep are also important. The aim of this paper was to synthesize the available information on allostatic load differences, especially those connected to sex/gender and age, and to provide a model for the future study of allostatic load, with a focus on these differences. By carefully studying allostatic load factors, we realized that many studies do not take this allostatic load difference into account in the analysis methods. In this paper, we also support the idea of further research to develop new allostatic load analysis strategies that will include all knowledge about sex/gender differences and that will, in more detail, explain numerous changeable social and educational factors that are currently accepted as biological ones. Furthermore, specific allostatic load biomarkers are expressed differently in different age groups, indicating that the discrepancies cannot be attributed solely to sex/gender disparities. This kind of approach can be valuable, not only for better explaining the differences in the frequency and age of onset of chronic diseases and multimorbidity, but also for the potential planning and development of preventive actions based on the aforementioned sex/gender and age disaparities, in order to prevent the most frequent diseases and to establish specific biomarker cut-off values for each sex/gender and age group.

Insulin resistance has many deleterious effects on the central nervous system, including the initiation and potentiation of neurodegeneration. While the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease has been extensively researched with many insights into the effects of amyloids and neurofibrillary tangles, the connection between the two pathogenic entities has not yet been fully elucidated. Gangliosides are commonly found in neuronal membranes and myelin, specifically in lipid rafts that have been linked to pathological amyloidogenesis. In this study, 64 Sprague Dawley rats with equal sex distribution were separated into four sex-specific groups, as follows: control group on standard diet; group on high-fat, high-sugar diet (HFHSD); group on HFHSD treated with metformin; and group on HFHSD treated with liraglutide. Free-floating immunohistochemistry of the rat hippocampi was performed to analyze group-specific and sex-specific changes in the composition of the four most common gangliosides found in neuronal membranes and myelin sheaths, GM1, GD1a, GD1b and GT1b. The groups on HFHSD showed glucose tolerance impairment and body weight increase at the end of the experiment, whereas the groups treated with pharmacotherapeutics had better insulin sensitivity and decreases in body weight by the end of the experiment. Most changes were observed for GM1 and GD1b. Positive immunoreactivity for GM1 was observed in the male group treated with liraglutide in regions where it is not physiologically found. The changes observed following HFHSD and liraglutide treatment were suggestive of ganglioside restructuring that might have implications on pathological amyloidogenesis. Metformin treatment did not significantly alter the hippocampal ganglioside composition in either sex.

Many published reports have documented an increased prevalence of chronic medical conditions among veterans, but there were only a few studies that compared these increases with the general population. The aim of this study was to determine differences in chronic medical conditions between Croatian war veterans and the general population. This study included two groups of subjects, i.e. 1453 participants who are Croatian war veterans and 1429 participants from the general population. Medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests and specific diagnostic procedures were taken during systematic physical examination in both groups. The prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary heart disease, malignancy, psychiatric diseases, cholelithiasis, nephrolithiasis, smoking and alcohol consumption was analyzed. Croatian war veterans were found to be more likely to develop hypertension than individuals in the general population (29.5% vs. 24.3%), as well as diabetes (7.3% vs. 3.8%), hyperlipidemia (56.4% vs. 27.3%), hyperthyroidism (3.1% vs. 0.8%), coronary heart disease (4.3% vs. 1 %), malignancy (4.1% vs. 2.2%), psychiatric diseases (15.4% vs. 1.1%), and alcohol consumption (53% vs. 29%). Significant difference was found in favor of the general population for hypothyroidism (14.3% vs. 8%). There were no differences in the prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cholelithiasis, nephrolithiasis, and smoking. Our findings confirmed the hypothesis of a higher prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, malignancy and psychiatric diseases among Croatian war veterans and emphasized the need of better control of their medical conditions.

In the years after the Second World War, Osijek and Slavonia experienced a significant lack of trained medical personnel, especially dental personnel. A large number of such personnel were of Jewish origin and perished in the persecutions during the war, also a large number of people that were of German origin moved away from Slavonia. In addition to that, a considerable number of trained dental and medical personnel retired after the war, so the situation was very difficult. To improve the state of dental protection of the population, in 1961, the College of Dentistry was established in Osijek. The education lasted two years and was organized into six trimesters, after which the participants obtained the title of the senior dentist. During the ten years of activity at the College of Dentistry in Osijek, there were several hundred students who studied from all parts of the country at the time, but mostly they were from Slavonia. In this way, this educational institution fulfilled its goal. The shortage of trained dental personnel has been reduced and Osijek and Slavonia are catching up with the rest of Croatia in the number of medical personnel. In 1971, the College of Dentistry ceases to operate, transforming into the Polyclinic for the protection of teeth and mouth in Osijek, which continues the tradition of dental protection of the population and training of dental staff.

Vitamins play a vital role in human health, particularly in the development and maintenance of oral health in children. These nutrients are broadly categorized into fat-soluble and water-soluble types, crucial for children’s well-being. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of vitamin deficiencies on the oral health of children, focusing on how these deficiencies contribute to various oral health issues and determining the relationship between specific vitamin shortages and oral diseases. Findings indicate that shortages in vitamins A and D lead to enamel issues and a higher susceptibility to dental diseases, vitamin E assists in treating oral mucositis, and vitamin K is essential for blood clotting in dental surgeries. Deficits in B-complex and vitamin C result in enamel hypomineralization and soft tissue ailments, including aphthous stomatitis and gingival petechiae. Additionally, a lack of vitamin B7 compromises the immune response, increasing oral candidiasis risk. Therefore, vitamin deficiencies markedly affect children’s oral health, highlighting the need for joint efforts between dental professionals and caregivers for effective pediatric care. Addressing vitamin deficiencies through supplementation and tailored dental care emphasizes the significance of nutritional health in children’s overall and dental well-being, advocating for a collaborative approach to achieve optimal health outcomes.

Background: Recently published research demonstrated direct renoprotective effects of the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist GLP 1 RA, but the relevant molecular mechanisms are still not clear. The aim of this research was to assess the effects of Liraglutide in a cell culture model of diabetic nephropathy on cell viability, antioxidant (GSH) and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF- β1) levels and extracellular matrix (ECM) expression. The metabolic activity in hyperglycemic conditions and the effect of Liraglutide treatment were assessed by measuring Akt, pAkt, GSK3β, pGSK3β, pSTAT3, SOCS3, iNOS and NOX4 protein expression with Western blot. F actin distribution was used to assess the structural changes of the cells upon treatment. Materials and methods: The cells were exposed to high glucose (HG30 mM) followed by 0.5 mM H2O2 and a combination of glucose and H2O2 during 24 h. Subsequently, the cells were treated with different combinations of HG30, H2O2 and Liraglutide. Cell viability was determined by an MTT colorimetric test, and the GSH, TGF-β1 concentration and ECM expression were measured using a spectrophotometric/microplate reader assay and an ELISA kit, respectively. Western blotting was used to detect the protein level of Akt, pAkt, GSK3β, pGSK3β, pSTAT3, SOCS3, iNOS and NOX4. The F-actin cytoskeleton was visualized with Phalloidin stain and subsequently quantified. Results: Cell viability was decreased as well as GSH levels in cells treated with a combination of HG30/H2O2, and HG30 alone (p < 0.001). The addition of Liraglutide improved the viability in cells treated with HG30, but it did not affect the cell viability in the cell treated with the addition of H2O2. GSH increased with the addition of Liraglutide in HG30/H2O2 (p < 0.001) treated cells, with no effect in cells treated only with HG30. TGF-β1 levels (p < 0.001) were significantly increased in HG30 and HG30/H2O2. The addition of Liraglutide significantly decreased the TGF-β1 levels (p < 0.01; p < 0.05) in all treated cells. The synthesis of collagen was significantly increased in HG30/H2O2 (p < 0.001), while the addition of Liraglutide in HG30/H2O2 significantly decreased collagen (p < 0.001). Akt signaling was not significantly affected by treatment. The GSK3b and NOX4 levels were significantly reduced (p < 0.01) after the peroxide and glucose treatment, with the observable restoration upon the addition of Liraglutide suggesting an important role of Liraglutide in oxidative status regulation and mitochondrial activity. The treatment with Liraglutide significantly upregulated STAT3 (p < 0.01) activity, with no change in SOCS3 indicating a selective regulation of the STAT 3 signaling pathway in glucose and the oxidative overloaded environment. A significant reduction in the distribution of F-actin was observed in cells treated with HG30/H2O2 (p < 0.01). The addition of Liraglutide to HG30-treated cells led to a significant decrease of distribution of F-actin (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The protective effect of Liraglutide is mediated through the inhibition of TGF beta, but this effect is dependent on the extent of cellular damage and the type of toxic environment. Based on the WB analysis we have revealed the signaling pathways involved in cytoprotective and cytotoxic effects of the drug itself, and further molecular studies in vitro and vivo are required to elucidate the complexity of the pathophysiological mechanisms of Liraglutide under conditions of hyperglycemia and oxidative stress.

Epidural analgesia is one of the most common methods of relieving labor pain. The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of epidural analgesia, maternal satisfaction and relationship between the effectiveness of epidural analgesia and various factors. Data were analyzed retrospectively and collected during 2022. A total of 60 parturients participated in the study. Data were collected through a questionnaire before the parturient was discharged from the hospital. The mean assessment of pain on a 1–10 numeric rating scale before epidural analgesia was 7.7 and 3.4 after administration of epidural analgesia. The median assessment of pain before epidural analgesia was 8 (7¬¬–8), and the median assessment of pain after epidural analgesia was 3 (2–5). The average satisfaction with epidural analgesia on a 1–10 scale was 8.11, and the median satisfaction was 10 (7–10). Total of 35 (58.3%) parturients rated satisfaction with 10. Statistically significant association between the effectiveness of epidural analgesia and parity, dilution of administered levobupivacaine, fentanyl administration, and level of education was not found. Childbirth pain is significantly alleviated by the application of epidural analgesia and the satisfaction of parturients is very high.

Throughout history, Osijek and Slavonia were parts of numerous empires and states. In this paper, the authors depict dental health care of the inhabitants of Osijek and Slavonia throughout their history, since the ancient prehistoric times when dental medicine and medicine in general were ‘in the hands’ of gods and medicine men, throughout the period of the Roman Empire and Middle Ages, as well as the Turkish sovereignty, all the way to the modern era when Osijek and Slavonia became part of the Austrian Empire and many novelties were introduced in the society, among other things, and for those times, modern procedures of medicine and dental protection. Those were the true beginnings of medicine and dental protection. The authors illustrate the work of various ‘dentists’ who worked in Osijek, from military and town surgeons, barbers, and especially the work of doctors that needed to have formal school and specialist education after the reforms implemented in the 19th century. Thanks to the reforms of the Austrian, and later the Austrian-Hungarian authorities, the practice and work of people who were allowed to perform dental procedures started being regulated, prices were established, and punishments introduced for those who performed dental procedures without having the proper qualifications.

Bone healing after tooth extraction may be affected by defects of the alveolus buccal wall, such as fenestrations and dehiscences. Therefore, to minimize dimensional changes it is advisable to perform alveolar ridge preservation after tooth extractions. Different biomaterials are used for this purpose. The aim of this study was to investigate the qualitative and quantitative histological changes in human biopsies taken after 6 months of healing of extraction sockets with buccal wall defects. For this purpose, the defects of 36 patients (18 per group) were treated with injectable biphasic calcium phosphate (I-BCP) or bovine xenograft (BX) after extraction. After six months of healing, biopsies were taken and proceeded to the histology laboratory. No evidence of an inflammatory response of the tissue was observed in the biopsies of either group, and the newly formed bone (NB) was in close contact with the remaining biomaterial (BM). The histomorphometric results showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the groups in the mean percentage of NB (p = 0.854), BM (p = 0.129), and soft tissue (p = 0.094). To conclude, both biomaterials exhibited osteoconductivity and biocompatibility and achieved satisfactory bone regeneration of buccal wall defects after tooth extraction.

Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease characterized by the excessive accumulation of fat in adipose tissue driven by hypertrophy and hyperplasia of adipocytes through adipogenesis. Adipogenesis plays a key role in the development of obesity and related metabolic disorders, which makes it potential target for the therapeutic approach to obesity. An increasing number of studies confirm the pleiotropic action of the combined treatment with metformin and statins, suggesting their anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, and anti-adipogenic effect. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of different doses of metformin (MET) and simvastatin (SIM) on the expression of key transcription factors of adipogenesis. Mouse 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were induced to differentiation in adipogenic medium with sustained MET and SIM treatment to assess the effect on adipogenesis. Nine days after initiating adipogenesis, the cells were prepared for further experiments, including Oil Red O staining, RT-PCR, Western blotting, and immunocytochemistry. Treating the cells with the combination of MET and SIM slightly reduced the intensity of Oil Red O staining compared with the control group, and down-regulated mRNA and protein expression of PPARγ, C/EBPα, and SREBP-1C. In conclusion, the inhibitory effect of MET and SIM on adipocyte differentiation, as indicated by decreased lipid accumulation, appears to be mediated through the down-regulation of adipogenic transcription factors, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), CCAAT/enhancer binding pro-tein α (C/EBPα), and sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP-1C).

Fly bioash (FBA) as a by-product of biomass-fuelled facilities exhibits alkaline properties and is enriched with phytonutrients, thereby offering the potential to effectively ameliorate acidic and nutrient-deficient soils. However, concerns about health risks due to a potential FBA radioactive contamination are still not well studied, notably under field conditions. This study examined pH changes and concentrations of natural (238U, 232Th, 226Ra, 40K) and anthropogenic (137Cs) radionuclides after application of very alkaline (pH > 12) FBA in: (i) highly acid (pHKCl = 4.1) Luvisol and (ii) sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seeds, grown in organic farming and rain-fed conditions. FBA (originated from a modern cogeneration, fuelled on certified deciduous forest wood chips) was applied at increasing doses; 0, 4.5, 8.6, 13, and 17.2 t/ha. After 54 months of application, FBA significantly increased soil pHKCl by up to 1.8 unit and the seed yield by 15%, compared with no amended Control, without compromising soil electrical conductivity (salinity). The activity concentrations (Ac) of all observed radionuclides, measured using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry, were not altered under FBA application, neither in the surface (0–30 cm) Luvisol horizon nor in the sunflower seed. Moreover, the Ac of 238U, 232Th, and 137Cs in the seed were below detection limit, whereas the Ac of 40K and 226Ra were lower by up to 2.6 and 61 times, respectively, than their corresponding Ac in the soil treatments. The radiological footprint of FBA exhibited lower Ac for most of the observed radionuclides compared with both (i) Croatian non-arable topsoils (with reductions of 238U 3.6 times, 232Th 1.8 times, 226Ra 1.7 times, and 137Cs 1.5 times) and (ii) widely used mineral N/P/K fertilisers in conventional agroecosystems (with reductions of 238U 12.5 times; 226Ra 1.3 times, and 40K 2.4 times). Our findings provide evidence that the application of FBA as a soil conditioner does not pose radiological health or environmental risks, contributing to more sustainable agri-food production and circular bioeconomy. However, it is essential to conduct further studies to comprehensively investigate the effects of FBA application on soil and crop quality across diverse environmental conditions and extended spatiotemporal scales.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is one of the most severe complications of the COVID-19 disease. The role of IL-33 and calpain 1 was previously described in lung infections and lung tissue damage. Our study examined the association between serum calpain 1 activity and IL-33 concentration in patients with COVID-19 ARDS. In the research, we included 80 subjects who had COVID-19 pneumonia and divided them into 2 groups: 40 subjects with ARDS and 40 subjects without ARDS. The basis of the research was the collection of subjects’ data and the sampling of peripheral venous blood. The concentration of IL-33 was determined by the ELISA method and the activity of calpain 1 by the fluorometry method. Our research showed elevated calpain 1 activity and IL-33 concentration in the serum of COVID-19 patients who developed ARDS compared to those who did not develop ARDS and a positive correlation between them was established. Further, a positive correlation was established between the examined parameters and the severity of the disease, proinflammatory markers, and the use of mechanical ventilation. These results indicate a possible association and role of calpain 1 and IL-33 with the development of ARDS in COVID-19 patients.

Abnormal expansion of white adipose tissue involves increasing the existing adipocytes’ cell size or increasing the number through the differentiation of new adipocytes. Adipogenesis is a process of proliferation and differentiation of adipocyte precursor cells in mature adipocytes. As a key process in determining the number of adipocytes, it is a possible therapeutic approach for obesity. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the molecular mechanisms involved in adipogenesis that could serve as suitable therapeutic targets. Reducing bodyweight is regarded as a major health benefit. Limited efficacy and possible side effects and drug interactions of available anti-obesity treatment highlight a constant need for finding novel efficient and safe anti-obesity ingredients. Numerous studies have recently investigated the inhibitory effects of natural products on adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation. Possible anti-obesity effects of natural products include the induction of apoptosis, cell-cycle arrest or delayed progression, and interference with transcription factor cascade or intracellular signaling pathways during the early phase of adipogenesis.Keywords: adipogenesis, transcriptional cascades, signaling pathways, anti-obesity treatment, bioactive molecules

The gut microbiota, which represent a community of different microorganisms in the human intestinal tract, are crucial to preserving human health by participating in various physiological functions and acting as a metabolic organ. In physiological conditions, microbiota–host partnership exerts homeostatic stability; however, changes in intestinal microbiota composition (dysbiosis) are an important factor in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease and its two main disease entities: ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. The incidence and prevalence of these inflammatory conditions have increased rapidly in the last decade, becoming a significant problem for the healthcare system and a true challenge in finding novel therapeutic solutions. The issue is that, despite numerous studies, the etiopathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease is not completely clear. Based on current knowledge, chronic intestinal inflammation occurs due to altered intestinal microbiota and environmental factors, as well as a complex interplay between the genetic predisposition of the host and an inappropriate innate and acquired immune response. It is important to note that the development of biological and immunomodulatory therapy has led to significant progress in treating inflammatory bowel disease. Certain lifestyle changes and novel approaches—including fecal microbiota transplantation and nutritional supplementation with probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics—have offered solutions for dysbiosis management and paved the way towards restoring a healthy microbiome, with only minimal long-term unfavorable effects.

The prevalence and importance of male infertility make it a serious worldwide medical and social problem. The aim of this study was to determine if there were any significant differences in zinc concentrations in seminal fluid in men diagnosed with infertility compared to control group, and if there were, to determine how it affected the number and percentage of sperm cells with normal motility and morphology. A case-control study was conducted in the Osijek-Baranja County from January 2014 to June of 2015. The study included 276 subjects referred to biochemistry laboratory of the Osijek University Hospital Centre, 100 (36.2%) of them with low sperm count confirmed by spermiogram after 3 months. Semen samples were processed according to the World Health Organization criteria, and zinc concentrations were determined using spectrophotometry and direct colorimetry without deproteinization on a chemistry analyzer (Olympus AU 680, Beckman Coulter, Tokyo, Japan). Common warts (verrucae vulgares) are the most common complaint in routine dermatological practice. Warts can be painful on pressure and are often an aesthetic problem, but they are not a major threat to the person’s general health. Treatment options are symptomatic and do not eradicate the causative agent. Dermatological surgery procedures such as cryotherapy, electrocauterization and excochleation can be painful, with common recurrences. These are the most important reasons for revival of the treatment procedures and remedies based on traditional medicine. Traditional medicine is still commonly practiced as a form of self-healing. This paper presents the most commonly used wart remedies of plant, animal and mineral origin, along with various magic practices. We emphasize that this paper is written from the viewpoint of physicians, practitioners of dermatology, not as a study in the history or culture. The main objective of the study was to explore various substances and methods people use as home remedies for warts. We performed a case study survey among the general population by interviewing 147 adult participants using a simple preliminary questionnaire inquiring about preferred treatment and knowledge about common warts.

Aims: Chronic diabetes complications, including diabetic nephropathy (DN), frequently result in end-stage renal failure. This study investigated empagliflozin (SGLT2i) effects on collagen synthesis, oxidative stress, cell survival, and protein expression in an LLC-PK1 model of DN. Methods: Combinations of high glucose (HG) and increasing empagliflozin concentrations (100 nM and 500 nM), as well as combinations of HG, H2O2, and empagliflozin, were used for cell culture treatment. The cell viability, glutathione (tGSH), ECM expression, and TGF-β1 concentration were measured. In addition, the protein expression of Akt, pAkt, GSK3, pGSK3, pSTAT3, and SMAD7 was determined. Results: The addition of both concentrations of empagliflozin to cells previously exposed to glucose and oxidative stress generally improved cell viability and increased GSH levels (p < 0.001, p < 0.05). In HG30/H2O2/Empa500-treated cells, significant increase in pSTAT3, pGSK3β, GSK3β, SMAD7, and pAKT levels (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.05) was observed except for AKT. Lower drug concentrations did not affect the protein expression levels. Furthermore, empagliflozin treatment (100 nM and 500 nM) of HG30/H2O2-injured cells led to a decrease in TGF-β1 levels (p < 0.001). In cells exposed to oxidative stress and hyperglycemia, collagen production remained unchanged. Conclusion: Renoprotective effects of empagliflozin, in this LLC-PK1 cell model of DN, are mediated via activation of the Akt/GSK-3 signalling pathway, thus reducing oxidative stress-induced damage, as well as enhanced SMAD7 expression leading to downregulation of TGF-β1, one of the key mediators of inflammation and fibrosis.

Abstract Background There is potential for medical research on the basis of routine data used from general practice electronic health records (GP eHRs), even in areas where there is no common GP research platform. We present a case study on menopausal women with hypertension and metabolic syndrome (MS). The aims were to explore the appropriateness of the standard definition of MS to apply to this specific, narrowly defined population group and to improve recognition of women at high CV risk. Methods We investigated the possible uses offered by available data from GP eHRs, completed with patients interview, in goal of the study, using a combination of methods. For the sample of 202 hypertensive women, 47–59 years old, a data set was performed, consisted of a total number of 62 parameters, 50 parameters used from GP eHRs. It was analysed by using a mixture of methods: analysis of differences, cutoff values, graphical presentations, logistic regression and decision trees. Results The age range found to best match the emergency of MS was 51–55 years. Deviations from the definition of MS were identified: a larger cut-off value of the waist circumference measure (89 vs 80 cm) and parameters BMI and total serum cholesterol perform better as components of MS than the standard parameters waist circumference and HDL-cholesterol. The threshold value of BMI at which it is expected that most of hypertensive menopausal women have MS, was found to be 25.5. The other best means for recognision of women with MS include triglycerides above the threshold of 1.7 mmol/L and information on statins use. Prevention of CVD should focus on women with a new onset diabetes and comorbidities of a long-term hypertension with anxiety/depression. Conclusions The added value of this study goes beyond the current paradigm on MS. Results indicate characteristics of MS in a narrowly defined, specific population group. A comprehensive view has been enabled by using heterogenoeus data and a smart combination of various methods for data analysis. The paper shows the feasibility of this research approach in routine practice, to make use of data which would otherwise not be used for research.

The aim of this clinical study was to compare low-level laser therapy (LLLT) switched on and switched off in the treatment of burning mouth syndrome (BMS). BMS is a debilitating condition for patients and highly demanding for physicians, characterized by burning symptoms in the oral cavity. Despite extensive research, so far only cognitive behavioral therapy and clonazepam have been proven successful for its treatment in randomized controlled trials. Forty-four patients with BMS were randomly assigned to the study laser group (LLLT) or the sham laser group. LLLT was performed with the GaAlAs laser (830 nm) used in non-contact mode on the site in the mouth where burning symptoms were present; study patients received 10 sessions (10 days). Each participant fi lled out the visual analog scale (VAS) and oral health impact on the quality of life scale (OHIP-CRO 14) before and after either therapy protocol. Hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) infects approximately 185 million individuals worldwide. It is a leading cause of chronic liver disease and the primary reason for liver transplantation. The main aim of antiviral treatment is to achieve a sustained virologic response, which means eradication of the virus. The combination of pegylated-interferon and ribavirin was the standard of care for over a decade, despite the long treatment duration and severe adverse effects. The introduction of direct-acting antivirals with pan-genomic properties and excellent tolerance increased rates of SVR and shortened the duration of the therapy. Furthermore, it allowed clinicians to customise HCV therapy according to important clinical parameters such as HCV- genotype and liver fibrosis stage.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the latest pandemic with a high rate of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Crises like these can harm the academic functioning and psychophysical health of nursing students. With this qualitative study, we aim to explore how students perceive the COVID-19 crisis and what their personal experiences were while studying during the global pandemic. In the study, data saturation was achieved after analyzing the reports of 33 undergraduate nursing students, using the inductive thematic saturation method. Data were collected using an online form, which students filled out, describing their perceptions and experiences. Qualitative inductive content analysis of students’ reports resulted in 29 codes, indicating different student perceptions of the efficiency of state institutions in crises. All students described the spread of misinformation on social networks and the risky behavior of the population. Most are afraid of infection and worried about the well-being of their family, so they constantly apply protective measures. Students recognize their responsibility to the community and the importance and risks of the nursing profession. They also describe negative experiences with public transportation and residence in the student dorm. The fear of possible infection in the classroom is not significant, however, students are afraid of the clinical settings. Thirteen students reported difficulty in concentrating and learning, while all students praised teacher support and faculty work in this crisis.
