Aim: This study aimed to investigate the possible reciprocal relationship between idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2023 to February 2024. Patients with IIH and age and gender-matched controls without IIH were included. Information on age, gender, comorbidities, smoking, and alcohol consumption was recorded. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated, and a BMI ≥30 was considered obese. Berlin questionnaire and STOP-BANG questionnaire were administered to all participants. High risk for OSA was determined if participants responded affirmatively to at least three out of the eight questions on the STOP-BANG questionnaire, or if two out of the three categories showed positive results on the Berlin questionnaire. Results: Sixty patients with IIH and 120 controls participated. There were no significant differences between groups regarding age (p=0.437) and gender distribution (p=0.716). The percentage of obese subjects was significantly higher in the IIH group (p<0.001). The Berlin and STOP-BANG results showed that the IIH group had higher risks for OSA than the control group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed obesity as the only factor independently associated with high-risk classification with the Berlin questionnaire. In the STOP-BANG survey, higher age, male gender, obesity, and hyperlipidemia were independently related to high-risk classification. Conclusion: Obesity is a common risk factor for both OSA and IIH. This article evaluates the factors contributing to the onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the ¿stanbul Kartal Region. The study collected data from 566 T2DM patients and found that female gender and family history decreased the age of onset, while the total number of pregnancies increased the age at diagnosis. The study suggests that T2DM screening should be performed earlier in women and/or those with a family history. The study also found a weak correlation between the age of onset and the number of pregnancies, but no correlation with BMI. The study concludes that female gender and maternal family history are important factors in lowering the age of T2DM onset. [Extracted from the article]

Objective: Renal transplantation is a challenging process for the recipients. One of the important problems in this process is unwanted weight gain. This study aimed to determine the change in body mass index (BMI) and to evaluate the effect of recipient characteristics on BMI during one-year period after renal transplantation. Methods: The article was conducted in a retrospective design. In the study, files of 170 patients who underwent renal transplantation between 2015 and 2016 were reviewed retrospectively. T-test, ANOVA, and correlation analysis were used in the analysis of data. Results: It was determined that the patients had a tendency to have increased BMI after transplantation, with a higher rate in the first three months. The increase in BMI was higher in singles than in married participants (p=0.01 and p<0.05), and in men than in women (p=0.01 and p<0.05). It was determined that there was no significant relationship between BMI values and glomerular filtration rate, and creatinine levels of adult renal transplant recipients (p>0.05). Conclusion: In the study, it was determined that the increase in BMI was higher especially in the first three months after renal transplantation. For this reason, it is an important requirement to address the counseling and support to patients and their relatives regarding weight management in the early period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, obez hastalarda retinal mikrovasküler yapısında meydana gelen değişiklikleri değerlendirmeyi ve bu değişikliklerin klinik özelliklerle ilişkisini belirlemeyi amaçladık. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Tüm katılımcılarda kolesterol, açlık kan şekeri, açlık insülini,CRP ve HbA1C düzeylerini içeren biyokimyasal incelemeler yapıldı. Plazma aterojenik indeksi(AI) plazma trigliserid (TG) düzeyinin yüksek yoğunluklu lipoprotein (HDL) düzeyine oranının logaritması [log (TG/HDL-K)] olarak hesaplandı. Vücut Kitle İndeksi (VKİ) ≤25 kg/m2 olan hastalar kontrol grubuna dahil edildi. Obez hastalar VKİ'lerine göre üç gruba ayrıldı: grup 1 (VKİ: 30-34,99 kg/m2), grup 2 (VKİ: 35-39.99 kg/m2) ve grup 3 (VKİ ≥ 40 kg/m2) . Optik koherens tomografi anjiografi (OKT-A) ile foveal avasküler zon (FAZ), makulada yüzeyel ve derin kapiller pleksusun damar dansitesi (VD) ile radial peripapiller kapiller pleksus VD ölçüldü. Bulgular: Çalışmaya 27 kontrol ve 83 obez hasta olmak üzere toplam 110 hasta dahil edildi. Kontrol vakalarına kıyasla obez hastalarda HbA1C, açlık insülini, HOMA-IR, C-reaktif protein ve AI seviyeleri anlamlı derecede yüksekti. Obez hastalarda retinanın yüzeyel (p=0,003) ve derin (p=0,001)VD'leri anlamlı olarak azaldı ve FAZ anlamlı olarak arttı (p=0,032). Klinik özellikler ile OKT-A bulguları arasında yapılan korelasyon analizinde yüzeyel ve derin VD'ler yaş, VKİ, HbA1C ve AI ile ters orantılıydı. Sonuç: Obez hastalarda retina yüzeyel ve derin VD'leri azalmıştı ve retinal VD'ler ile yaş, VKI, HbA1C ve AI arasında ters bir ilişki vardı.

ÖZET Amaç: Birçok nedene bağlı olarak preoperatif dönemde hastaların %60-80’inin anksiyeteye sahip oldukları bildirilmiştir. Biz bu çalışmayla vücut kitle indeksi(VKİ) ile preoperatifanksiyete düzeyi arasındaki ilişkiyi amaçladık. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışmamız, XXX Hastanesi’ nde 1 Nisan-31 Temmuz 2014 tarihleri arasında, anesteziyoloji ve reanimasyon polikliniğine preoperatif değerlendirme için başvuran, elektif cerrahi planlanan, cerrahi grade sınıflaması grade 2 ve grade 3 olan, 18 ile 65 yaş arasındaki ASA I-III risk indeksindeki 248 hasta üzerinde gerçekleştirilen prospektif bir çalışmadır. Aydınlatılmış onam formunu imzaladıktan sonra hastalardan iki bölümden oluşan anket formlarının doldurulması istenilmiştir. Birinci bölümde demografik bilgilere, ikinci bölümde ise durumsal ve sürekli anksiyeteyi ölçen STAI-I ve STAI-II testlerine yanıt verilmesi istenilmiştir. Hastaların demografik özelliklerine göre gruplandırılıp anksiyete düzeyleri karşılaştırılmıştır. Bulgular: Hastaların %52,8 i kadın, % 47,2’ si erkekti. Hastaların VKİ ortalaması 26,79±6,15 olup STAI-I ortalama değerleri 44,37±8,91, aynı dönemdeki STAI-II ortalama değeri ise 47,88±6,43 bulunmuştur. Preoperatif ortalama STAI-I ve VKI değerleri 35 yaş üstü olanlar, evli olanlar ve okur-yazar olmayan veya ilköğretim mezunu olanlarda istatiksel olarak anlamlı yüksek bulundu. Hastaların VKİ’ ye göre zayıf, normal, fazla kilolu ve obez olarak sınıflandırılıp STAI-I ve STAI-II düzeylerinin değerlendirmesinde gruplar arasında anlamlı fark bulunamadı. Sonuç: Çalışmamızın sonucunda hastaların preoperatifanksiyete düzeyleri ile VKİ değerleri arasında anlamlı bir ilişki olmadığı görüldü. Objective: The pandemic lockdown has affected the whole world regarding health, social, and economic aspects. This study aimed to detect the pandemic's effect on children's height and weight. Methods: The study was a retrospective cohort study. The data were collected from patients aged 48 to 144 months who were followed up for three years between 2020 and 2022 in the pediatric outpatient clinic. Height and weight percentiles, and body mass index values of the patients were recorded. Results: Eighty children were included in the study. It was determined that the children's annual body weight percentile values increased statistically significantly between 2020-2022. It was determined that there was a significant increase in the weight percentile values of children aged 48-59 months in all three years (p values were 0.00, 0.00, and 0.00, respectively). While there was no change in the height percentile value between 2020-21, an increase was observed in other years (2021 vs. 2022 and 2020 vs. 2022). While there was no increase in body weight percentile values between 2020-2021 in children aged 60-95 months, it was observed to increase in the following two years (p values were 0.00, and 0.00 respectively). In children aged 96-144 months, there was no statistically significant increase in weight and height percentile values over the years. Conclusion: The pandemic caused weight gain and increased the prevalence of obesity in children. While this increase was more pronounced in children aged 48-59 months, no weight gain was observed in children aged 96-144. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: To compare the lipid profile of preeclamptic pregnant women with the lipid profile of normal pregnant women. Materials and Methods: This study consisted of 40 severe preeclamptic, 40 mild preeclamptic, and 40 healthy pregnant patients who were prospectively admitted to the hospital in Harran University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology between June 2021 and June 2022. Age, pregnancy and delivery numbers, blood pressure and pulse values, Body Mass Index (BMI), blood total cholesterol, LDL, HDL triglyceride (TG) levels and hemogram parameters (Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, WBC, Platelet count and MPV) of all patients were evaluated.he study was planned as descriptive cross-sectional. The attitudes of the students studying at the Faculty of medicine towards scientific research were questioned. In the study, the "Attitude Scale Towards Scientific Research" was used. Results: A statistically significant difference was found between systolic - diastolic blood pressures and heart rate values according to the groups (p<0.001 for all groups). It was found that the BMI of the pregnant women in the preeclampsia (PE) groups was higher than the control group and there was a significant difference between the BMIs according to the groups (p<0.001). It was determined that total cholesterol, TG and LDL values of pregnant women with preeclampsia were higher than healthy pregnant women, and HDL values were lower than healthy pregnant women (p<0.001). Conclusions: In this study, it was observed that the lipid profile in PE patients was higher than the lipid profile in normal pregnant women, and preeclamptic pregnant women were more obese. Amaç: Bu çalışmada idyopatik karpal tünel sendromu (KTS) tanısı almış hastalarda klinik, fiziksel, elektrofizyolojik, fonksiyonel bulgular ve vücut kitle indeksi (VKİ) arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmak amaçlanmıştır. Method: Çalışmaya toplam 105 (48 bilateral, 9 unilateral) idiopatik KTS’li el katıldı. Hastaların demografik ve klinik bulguları ve tinel, phalen, ters phalen, karpal kompresyon bulguları değerlendirilerek kaydedildi. VKİ ≥ 30 olan hastalar obez olarak değerlendirildi. Hastaların fonksiyonlarını değerlendirmek amacıyla Boston Semptom Şiddet ve fonksiyonel kapasite skalası uygulandı. Hastalar klinik ve elektrofiyolojik incelemelerine göre evrelendirildiler. Bulgular: Hastaların yaş ortalaması 44.09 ± 10.97 idi. Elektofizyolojik evreleme ile yaş, cinsiyet, fonksiyonel kapasite ve semptom şiddet derecesi arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlılık saptanmazken, provakatif testlerden tinel testi pozitifliği ile ağır KTS arasında ve klinik evreleri ile KTS derecesi arasında anlamlı bir ilişki saptandı. Semptom şiddeti ve fonksiyonel kapasitesi, obez hasta grubunda, obez olmayan gruba göre anlamlı olarak daha yüksek bulundu. Obez ve obez olmayan grubun elektrofizyolojik özellikleri karşılaştırıldığında obez grubun median sinir duysal amplitüd değeri anlamlı olarak obez olmayan gruba göre düşük saptandı Sonuç: Obez KTS’li hastaların fonksiyon kaybı ve şiddet semptomlarının, obez olmayanlara göre daha fazla olması, bu hastalarının tedavisinde kilo kontrolünün önemini göstermektedir. Klinik bulgu ile elektrofizyolojik bulguların birbirini desteklemediği durumlarda, dikkatli bir muayene ile hastalık şiddeti hakkında bilgi edinilebileceği, ayrıca tedavinin etkinliğinin değerlendirilmesi ve hastaların takibinde yararlı olacağını düşünüyoruz. Yine hastalık takibinde özellikle fonksiyon kaybının ve şiddet semptomların değerlendirilmesinde uyarıcı testlerinin önemli olduğunu ve muayenemizde rutin olarak yer alması gerektiğini düşünmekteyiz.

Aim: The study aimed to find out whether there is a relationship between the mononeuropathies of the median, ulnar, radial, peroneal, and sciatic nerves and body mass index (BMI). Material and Methods: Patients whose clinical and electrodiagnostic findings were compatible with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE), radial neuropathy at the spiral groove (RNS), peroneal neuropathy at the fibular head (PNFH), and sciatic injury due to intramuscular injection (SNIII) were included in this retrospective cohort study. In addition, controls whose clinical and electrodiagnostic features were not compatible with mononeuropathy were included in the study. The BMI values of all participants were analyzed. Introduction: Hypertension is a global public health problem that is the leading cause of preventable death in the world and a disease which can cause many morbidities and mortality if not controlled or treated effectively. In many studies, it has been determined that anxiety and body mass index(BMI) are among the factors affecting hypertension. However, different results have been obtained in many studies in terms of the relationship between anxiety and hypertension. This study was carried out with the aim to evaluate the effect of body mass index and anxiety on blood pressure and the factors affecting blood pressure in patients who applied to outpatient clinic of family medicine at Dicle University Faculty of Medicine.Methods: 403 patients aged between 18- 65 years, who applied to outpatient clinic of family medicine at Dicle University Faculty of Medicine between 01.04.2018 and 01.07.2018, were included in this cross-sectional study. The population of the study was the province where the study was carried out, and the sample size was calculated with a power of 80%. The patients' body mass index and anxiety scores from Beck anxiety scale were calculated and measurements of arterial blood pressure were performed. The relationship between BMI, Beck anxiety scores and blood pressure of patients were investigated.Results: Of the participants, 50.1% were male, 49.9% were female and the average age was 34.11 in years. Of the patients, the mean BMI as 25.52 kg/m², the mean anxiety score as 7.40 and the arterial blood pressures as 117.80/75.54 mmHg were measured. It was found that arterial blood pressure raised significantly as the BMI group increased. While the relationship between the severity of anxiety and systolic blood pressure was significant, its relationship with diastolic blood pressure was not significant. There was a positive correlation between BMI, anxiety score and systolic and diastolic blood pressure.Conclusions: According to the results of this study, it was found that the increase in BMI and Beck anxiety scores may be related with increase in arterial blood pressure. This result showed that common health problems in primary care such as anxiety, obesity and hypertension may be associated with each other, and it can be effectively fought against hypertension and its complications with the perspective of family medicine and biopsychosocial approach.Keywords: Anxiety, Hypertension, Blood Pressure, Obesity, Body Mass Index

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the vitamin D levels, body mass index (BMI), physical activity levels and life-style factors in postmenopausal women and investigate the correlation between vitamin D levels, BMI and physical activity. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 postmenopausal women were included in this cross-sectional study. Sociodemographic features, lifestyle factors such as calcium and vitamin D supplementation and sun exposure, and BMI, and 25 hydroxyvitamin vitamin D [25(OH)D3] levels of the participants were recorded. The [International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) Short Form (SF)] was applied to all participants. The correlation between 25(OH)D3, BMI, and IPAQ scores has been investigated. Forty postmenopausal healthy individuals were included in the study for the comparison of physical activity level with the patient group. Results: The mean 25(OH)D3 level of the postmenopausal participants was 18.97±10.0 ng/mL, the mean BMI was 27.93±5.19, and the IPAQ score was 316.15±370.42. Compared with the IPAQ-SF score of the control group, the activity level of the postmenopausal patients was lower (p<0.001). A negative significant correlation between 25(OH)D3 levels and BMI (p<0.001) and a positive significant correlation was observed between 25(OH)D3 levels and IPAQ-SF scores in postmenopausal women (p<0.001). Conclusion: BMI and physical activity levels seem to be associated with vitamin D levels in the postmenopausal period. The importance of vitamin D deficiency, weight control, life-style factors, and physical activity in the postmenopausal period should be emphasized in patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bu çalışmanın amacı, üniversite öğrencilerinin beslenme ve fiziksel aktivite ile ilgili alışkanlıklarını belirlemek ve bu alışkanlıkların vücut kitle indeksi (VKİ) ve akademik başarı arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektir. Tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel tipteki bu araştırma, bir üniversitede 127 ikinci sınıf öğrencisi ile yürütüldü. Bu çalışmada çoktan seçmeli sorulardan oluşan bir anket kullanıldı. Veriler SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows 23.0 programı kullanılarak analiz edildi. Katılımcıların %81.9'u kadın olup, yaş ortalamaları 20.07±1.4 yıldır. Öğrencilerin genel ağırlıklı not ortalaması 2.93±0.47'dir. Öğrencilerin ortalama VKİ'si 21.5±2 idi. Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin günlük öğün sayıları, meyve, kuruyemiş-bakliyat, et, işlenmiş gıda tüketimleri ile genel ağırlıklı not ortalamaları (GANO) arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark bulundu (p=.003, p=. 001, p=.000, p=.032, p=.036, sırasıyla). Ayrıca fiziksel aktivite yapma ile VKİ arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark vardı (p=.008). Sonuçlar, üniversite öğrencilerinin günlük öğün sayısı, meyve, et, bakliyat, kuruyemiş ve işlenmiş gıda tüketim davranışlarının GANO’yu etkileyebileceği, fiziksel aktivite yapmanın ise VKİ puanlarını olumlu yönde iyileştirebileceğini göstermektedir. Objective: Households were visited, accompanied by a nutrition map created from foods expected to cause obesity and prepared by us based on market shelves. It was aimed to examine the relationship between the amount of food in the household, the sociodemographic characteristics of the household, eating attitudes and physical activity levels, and obesity. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in the spring term of 2019-2021 by personally reaching the households who agreed to participate in the study. Quota sampling method, one of the nonprobabilistic sampling methods, was used as the sampling method. Obesity status assessments were made with nutritional maps obtained by grouping the participants according to their socio-demographic data (Personal Information Form), eating attitudes (Eating Attitudes Test), physical activity variables (International Physical Activity Assessment Questionnaire Short Form) and the amount of nutrients in households. Results: Participants' mean height was 170.8±8.4, average weight was 76.0±14.2, mean body mass index (BMI) was 26.0±4.2, and mean age was 41.6±11.9 (min-max= 23-81). According to the research, 1 out of 10 people has 2.5 liters or more of carbonated drink in their house, and 1 out of 2 people has ready-made fruit juice in their house. When sugary food groups are examined, jam is the most common sugary food in households with 94% and white sugar 90%. The effects of chocolate, jam, sweetener, confectionery, white sugar, artificial chocolate, food syrups, ice cream and dried fruit levels on BMI were not determined. With 91.3%, white flour is the most common food in households from the food group with high carbohydrate content. Conclusion: When obesity status was evaluated with nutritional map, it was found that women are more prone to obesity than men, the risk of obesity decreases with increasing income level, the risk of obesity increases with age, and smokers have a lower body mass index than non-smokers. Background: Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogues have been widely used in the treatment of patients with central precocious puberty (CPP) for many years. In previous studies regarding the effects of GnRH analogues therapy on body mass index (BMI), conflicting results have been obtained. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effects of GnRH analogues therapy on BMI in girls diagnosed with CPP. Materials and Methods: In the study, a total of 145 female patients, who were treated and followed up due to CPP between September 2016 and June 2021, were included. In the retrospective review of medical records of the patients, age at admission, height, weight, BMI and standard deviation scores (SDS), bone age, Tanner stage, serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels, luteinizing hormone (LH) levels, estradiol (E2) levels and the peak LH level in the GnRH stimulation test in the beginning and after the first year of treatment were evaluated. Results: The mean age of 145 patients with central precocious puberty in the beginning of treatment was 7.27±0.97 years, and the mean bone age was 9.12±1.10 years. At the beginning of treatment, 118 (81.38%) of the patients were at a normal weight or underweight, and 27 (18.62%) patients were overweight or obese. In terms of stages of puberty, 109 (75.17%) of the patients were Tanner stage 2, 30 (20.69%) patients were Tanner stage 3, and 6 (4.14%) patients were Tanner stage 4. While the mean BMI-SDS of all patients was 0.11±0.99 before the treatment, it increased significantly (p<0.001) by the end of the first year of treatment and was found as 0.35 ± 0.95. While the mean BMI-SDS of patients who were at a normal weight or underweight was -0.21± 0.78 before the treatment, it was found as 0.09±0.84 after the treatment (p < 0.001). The initial BMI-SDS of overweight or obese patients was 1.53±0.40, and it was found as 1.48±0.49 after the treatment (p=0.412). Conclusions: cious puberty increased the BMI-SDS in patients who were at a normal weight or underweight, but it did not cause any change in patients who were overweight or obese. Purpose: This study aims to research the relationship between clinical, physical, electrophysiological, functional findings and body mass index (BMI) in patients with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Method: This study comprised 105 (48 bilateral, 9 unilateral) idiopathic CTS patients. Demographic and clinical findings and tinel, phalen, reverse phalen and carpal compression findings were evaluated and recorded. Patients with a BMI = 30 were evaluated as obese. Boston Symptom Severity and Functional Capacity Scale was applied to evaluate the patients' functions. The patients were staged according to clinical and electrophysiological examinations. Results: The mean age of the patients was 44.09 ± 10.97 years. While there was no statistically significant difference between electrophysiological staging and age, gender, functional capacity and symptom severity, there was a significant correlation between tinel test positivity and severe CTS and between the clinical stage and CTS. The symptom severity and functional capacity were significantly higher in the obese patient group than in the non-obese group. When the electro physiological characteristics of the obese and non-obese group were compared, the median nerve sensory amplitude of the obese group was significantly lower than the non-obese group. Conclusion: Patients with obese CTS have a higher rate of loss of function and symptoms of severity than non-obese patients and this shows the importance of weight control in the treatment of these patients. In cases where the severity of the clinically obtained severity and the electrophysiological severity are not proportional, we believe that a careful examination will provide information about the severity of the disease and also the effectiveness of the treatment and the follow-up of the patients. Again, we think that stimulant tests are important in the evaluation of the disease especially in the loss of function and severity symptoms and should be routinely included in our examination. Objective: To investigate the effects of body mass index (BMI), quadriceps angle (Q0) and pes planus on walking age in children with Down syndrome (DS) and typically developing peers. Methods: Bodyweight, height and Q0 were measured and footprints were obtained in 50 children with DS and 50 typically developing children (control), ages between 2-6 years. BMI and Staheli index (SI) were calculated. Results: The mean walking age was 26±8 months in the DS group and 12±2 months in the control group (p<0.0001). While BMI was 85 percent in all age groups in girls in the DS group, it increased with age in boys this group. SI was 1.17±0.28 in the DS group and 0.93±0.04 in the control group (p<0.001). Although there was no significant relationship between walking age and BMI, Q0, pes planus, the difference in walking age between the two groups decreased statistically as Q0 increased (p<0.001). Conclusion: In the DS group, regular monitoring of BMI, keeping it within healthy limits, and adding exercises related to Q0 and pes planus to physical therapy programs will reduce the delay in walking age. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the demographic characteristics of platelet apheresis donors during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, to examine the association of platelet counts with blood groups and body mass index (BMI), and to characterize the effects of BMI on platelet apheresis donation. Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, the demographic characteristics of platelet apheresis donors admitted to our center between January 2020 and January 2021 were examined, and hemogram parameters, previous platelet donation frequencies, and blood groups information were recorded. The relationship between donors' platelet counts, blood groups, and BMI were analyzed. Results: There was no statistically significant relationship between the platelet counts and blood groups. Although platelet counts were higher in Rh positive donors, no statistically significant relationship was found between platelet counts and the Rh group (p=0.675). Even though the platelet counts were lower in low-weight donors, there was no statistically significant relationship between platelet count and BMI groups (p=0.134). The lower collected platelet counts of the normal group, compared to the obese group, was found to be statistically significant (p=0.001). The number of donations for the overweight group being higher than the normal and obese groups was found to be statistically significant (p=0.002). Conclusion: Even though the platelet count increases with obesity, it does not have any statistical significance in healthy platelet donors. In conclusion, obesity does not have an inverse relationship with platelet apheresis donation and high BMI should not be considered as a prognostic factor for donation.

Amaç: Polikistik over sendromu (PKOS) üreme çağındaki kadınlarda en sık rastlanan endokrinolojik bozukluktur. Metabolik ve kardiyovasküler ek hastalıklara zemin oluşturması yanı sıra kemik metabolizmasını da etkilemektedir. Çalışmamızda PKOS olgularının kemik mineral yoğunluğunu değerlendirmek ve bunu etkileyen faktörleri belirlemeyi amaçladık. Gereç ve yöntem: Araştırmaya Ocak 2019 ve Ocak 2021 tarihleri arasında poliklinik başvurusu olan 17-44 yaş arası 109 PKOS tanısı alan kadın dahil edilmiştir. PKOS tanısı Rotterdam kriterleri baz alınarak konulmuştur. Olguların kemik mineral yoğunluğu (KMY) dual enerji X ray absorbsiyometri (DEXA) ile ölçüldü. Ayrıca katılımcıların biyokimyasal ve hormonal değerlendirmeleri de yapılarak sol femur boynu ve lumbal 2,3 ve 4. vertebra bölgelerinden alınan DEXA ölçümlerinin Z ve T skorları, katılımcılar vücut kitle indeksine (VKİ) göre gruplandırılarak karşılaştırıldı. Bulgular: Fazla kilolu olan olguların insülin (p=0,006), homeaostatic model assessment –insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (p=0,006) ve kortizol (p=0,009) ölçüm ortalamaları normal kilolu olgulara göre istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı olarak daha yüksek iken, tiroid stimülan hormon (TSH) ölçüm ortalamaları normal kilolu olgulara göre anlamlı olarak daha düşüktü (p=0,030). Fazla kilolu olan olguların femur boynu T skoru (FBTS) (p=0.038) ve femur boynu Z skoru (p=0.022) ölçüm ortalamaları normal kilolu olgulara göre daha yüksek olarak saptandı. Olgulara ait VKİ ölçümleri ile FBTS ölçümleri arasında pozitif bir (r=0.238) korelasyon saptanmıştır (p=0.013) ve bel çevresi/boy oranı ölçümleri ile FBZS ölçümleri arasında anlamlı, düşük düzeyde (r=0.198) ilişki saptanmıştır (p=0.039). Olguların FBZS (r=-0.212, p=0.028), lumbal 2-4 vertebra T skoru (L2L4TS)(r=-0.217, p=0.024) ve lumbal 2-4 vertebra Z skoru (L2L4ZS) (r=-0.277, p=0.004) ile dehidroepiandrosteron sülfat (DHEAS) arasında anlamlı negatif bir korelasyon saptanmıştır. Sonuç: Sonuç olarak VKİ ve bel çevresi/boy oranı PKOS olgularında KMY’i olumlu yönde etkilerken, DHEAS’nin olumsuz yönde etkilediği kanaatine vardık. Ancak mekanizmayı ortaya koymak için prospektif ve moleküler çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.

Aim: The study aimed to find out whether there is a relationship between the mononeuropathies of the median, ulnar, radial, peroneal, and sciatic nerves and body mass index (BMI). Material and Methods: Patients whose clinical and electrodiagnostic findings were compatible with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE), radial neuropathy at the spiral groove (RNS), peroneal neuropathy at the fibular head (PNFH), and sciatic injury due to intramuscular injection (SNIII) were included in this retrospective cohort study. In addition, controls whose clinical and electrodiagnostic features were not compatible with mononeuropathy were included in the study. The BMI values of all participants were analyzed. Results: One hundred thirty-one CTS patients, 53 UNE patients, 6 RNS patients, 25 PNFH patients, 72 SNIII patients, and 53 controls were included in the study. The BMI of CTS patients was higher than the BMI of controls (p<0.001), PNFH patients (p<0.001), and SNIII patients (p<0.001). The BMI of SNIII patients was lower than the BMI of controls (p<0.001), CTS patients (p<0.001), and UNE patients (p<0.001). The BMI of PNFH patients was lower than that of CTS patients (p<0.001) and UNE patients (p=0.004). No significant correlation was found between BMI values and electrodiagnostic classification of mononeuropathies in the groups. Conclusion: This study showed that high BMI is a risk factor for CTS and low BMI is a risk factor for SNIII. Purpose: Obesity is one of the increasingly negative factors affecting oral and dental health directly or indirectly in many developed and developing countries. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between obesity and dental problems in adults and to investigate the effect of obesity on oral and dental health. Materials and Methods: 200 patients over the age of 18 who applied with various dental complaints were examined clinically and radiologically. They were classified as 50 healthy females, 50 healthy males, 50 obese females, and 50 obese males according to the body mass index determined by the World Health Organization (healthy individual < 30.0 kg / m2 and 30.0 kg / m2 ≤ obesity individual). Sociodemographic characteristics, dental health status, and data of all patients were examined. Results: A statistically significant relationship was found between obesity and the number of tooth loss, the number of dental caries, educational status, and the frequency of applying to the dentist. Periodontitis was detected at a higher rate in the obesity group (58 %) compared to the control group, but the relationship between obesity and periodontal status was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Dental problems such as tooth loss, the number of dental caries, and periodontitis were higher in the obesity group, and this result showed that obesity threatens oral and dental health. To prevent these problems, there is a need for preventive strategies and increasing awareness of oral and dental health in obese patients.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of body mass index (BMI)c on the prognosis of lipophilic drug intoxication in patients who are admitted to the emergency units. Materials and Methods: The files of the patients who presented to the emergency department with lipophilic drug poisoning between January 2014 and August 2016 were reviewed. Demographic characteristics, medications taken, complaints at the time of admission, and physical examination findings were recorded. BMI of the patients were calculated. The group was created according to their BMI. These groups were compared. Results: 202 patients were included in the study. Among the participants, 75 (37,1%) were in the 18-24,9 BMI interval, and 127 (62,9%) were ≥25. Introduction:: Anemia is one of the important public health problems plaguing the world today. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) constitutes the majority of this anemia population. This study aims to explore the relationship of IDA and socio-demographic, lifestyle, dietary, physical activity, and different body size phenotypes in the adult Turkish populationMethods: The case-control study was carried out between August and October 2019 at the internal medicine outpatient clinic of the tertiary hospital. A total of 101 anemic and 111 age and gender matched non-anemic healthy controls were included. Iron-deficiency anemia was defined as the presence of both anemia and inflammation-adjusted ferritin concentration less than 15 ng/ml. Sociodemographic, lifestyle and nutritional characteristics of the participants were questioned with a questionnaire form. The physical activity level of the participants was evaluated with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ).Results: Non-anemic 111 (90 female, 21 male) and anemic 101 (90 female, 11 male) participants were included in the study. Unemployment (p=0.02), tea consumption (p=0.001), chronic disease (p=0.036), physical activity (p lt;0.001) and dietary diversity (p lt;0.001) were significantly associated with anaemia. Body mass index of anemic participants were higher than non-anemic (p=0.025). Employment (OR: 2.81, 95% CI: 1.024–7.721, p=0.045), physical activity (minimum) (OR: 0.14, 95% CI: 0.053–0.364, p lt; 0.001), physical activity (active) (OR: 0.30, 95% CI: 0.097–0.926, p= 0.036), tea consumption time (OR: 4.42, 95% CI: 1.767–11.059, p= 0.001), vegetables portion (OR: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.433–0.869, p= 0.006), dairy products portion (OR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.334–0.886, p= 0.015) were independently associated with IDA.Conclusions: Diet diversity, BMI, chronic disease, unemployment, physical activity, and tea consumption have been found to be factors associated with anemia. Objective: We aimed to determine the effects of preoperative evaluation, demographic data including the presence of chronic diseases, surgery indication, obesity frequency, and laboratory data on survival, admission to intensive care unit (ICU), and mortality rate of patients requiring internal examination scheduled for elective, noncardiac surgery. Methods: A total of 1230 patients, for whom an elective, noncardiac surgery was planned between June 1, 2020, and October 1, 2020, in our hospital, were prospectively evaluated and their follow-up assessment was conducted at 6 months. Preoperative American Society of Anesthesiologists scores, demographic information, indication for surgery and surgical method, chronic diseases, height, weight, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), requirement for postoperative intensive care, and laboratory results were recorded. Results: A total of 1230 patients were included in this study. The mean age was 60.2±12.7 years, and 51.0% (n=624) of the patients were men. Preoperative ASA scores were 16.3% (n=200), 49% (n=603), 32.9% (n=405), and 1.8% (n=22) for ASA-1, ASA-2, ASA-3, and ASA-4, respectively. Patients who would be operated on for malignancy constituted 22.4% (n=276). Ophthalmic surgeries were the most evaluated patient group (n=438) and hypertension (HT), diabetes mellitus (DM), and coronary artery disease (CAD) are the most common diseases. The hospitalization rate in the ICU was 5.7% (n=70) and the mortality rate was 1.5% (n=18). The highest rate of mortality among this group was seen in patients with malignancy diagnosis (18.5%), admission to ICU (10.9%), and BMI value <18.5 kg/m2 and ≥40 kg/m2. Conclusion: The three most common diseases during internal medicine preoperative evaluation were HT, DM, and CAD. Patients with malignancy and very high or very low BMI were found to be significantly related to more requirements for ICU and mortality in the postoperative period. Purpose: Digit ratio (2D:4D) is a sexually dimorphic trait, that may be a sign for prenatal testosterone level, which is significantly associated with handgrip strength (HGS) and sex-related body fat distribution. The aim of this study was to explore the association between the 2D:4D, HGS, and body fat distribution parameters in medical students. Materials and Methods: A total of 253 participants (112 males, 141 females) were involved in this cross-sectional study. Anthropometric parameters, including height and body weight, circumferences of arm, neck, waist, hip, HGS, the length of the second and fourth finger were measured. According to 2D:4D, the volunteers were divided into three groups (>1, =1, 1 was associated with lower HGS, while larger arm, neck, and waist circumferences were associated with higher HGS. Pearson correlation analysis showed that 2D:4D of both hands had a strong negative correlation with height, circumferences of arm and neck, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and HGS, whereas it was only positively correlated with body mass index. Right and left HGS were positively correlated with WHR, height, weight, circumferences of arm, neck, and waist. Conclusion: 2D/4D makes a substantial contribution to our prediction of body fat distribution in terms of the relationship of 2D:4D

Objective The prevalence of obesity is an increasing health problem throughout the world. Obesity is also one of the major causes of dyslipidemia. There have been many studies comparing thyroid hormone levels and body mass indexes (BMI) in recent years. There are also studies available in thyroid hormone tests and studies examining lipid profile. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of normal, low or high Thyroid Stimulated Hormone (TSH) levels on High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) levels according to body mass index in adult individuals. Material and Methods The study was retrospectively designed with data analysis method. The study was applied in the private university hospital Checkup clinic between December 2016 and September 2020; TSH, VKİ, HDL values were studied, and data of individuals over 18 years of age were collected (n=1621). As sociodemographic data, age and gender data were also recorded for each patient. Data was analyzed via SPSS 25.0 package program. Continuous variables are expressed as mean ± standard deviation and median (min, max), and categorical variables are expressed as numbers and percentages. Kolmogorov Smirnov Smirnov test and histograms was used to examine compliance of data to normal distribution. In independent group reviews Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis Variance Analysis (post hoc: Mann Whitney U test with Bonferroni correction) were used. In the examination of the differences between categorical variables, the Ki square test was used. All analysis P<0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Results HDL values differed statistically significantly in people who were normal weight compared to TSH classes. HDL values of people with TSH values between 0.5 and 4 mlU/mL were found to be significantly lower than those with a TSH value of 4 mlU/mL or higher (p=0.005). In obese people, it was observed that there was no statistically significant difference considering their HDL status according to TSH status (p>0.05). Conclusion In our study, HDL values of normal people with normal TSH value were found to be significantly lower than those with high TSH values among people who were normal weight. Although there are some studies in both adults and children, it is still open to research. Aim: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is worldwide and mainly affects the elderly. It is often impossible to define COPD with specific lines, and it has no complete cure procedure, mostly established by guidelines. The GOLD guideline uses a sectional COPD evaluation approach to group patients by symptoms and former history of exacerbations. The concurrent detection of various biomarkers reflecting different pathobiological pathways might help recognize patients with an increased risk of death. Studies showed that obesity is related to decreased lung function in the general population due to respiratory mechanics, muscular discomfort, and breath control.Material and Method: Ninety patients with COPD, whose mean age was 62, and 74% were male, were divided into four groups as A, B, C, and D according to the GOLD classification, were included in our study. Analyses were conducted to investigate the association between biochemical parameters, BMI, age, gender, and disease severity, according to GOLD subgroups.Results: It has been demonstrated that COPD patients are generally over the age of 40 and age correlates with the severity of the disease consistent with previous studies. Our study has shown that COPD usually occurs over the age of 40, and there is a relationship between advanced age and the severity of COPD.Conclusion: Our results are consistent with previous studies where COPD patients are usually over 40 years old, and age is linked to disease severity. While the BMI values of the patients in group B were higher than those of group A, it was compatible with studies showing the relationship between obesity and severity of COPD; being higher than C and D groups was consistent with the studies revealing the obesity paradox. Crp, Procalcitonin, Sedimentation, Calcium, Magnesium levels, and other complete blood count values showed no significant difference between GOLD groups.

Purpose: The aim of this stuıdy was to determine the relation between inflammation markers, anthropometric measurements, and blood lipid values. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted with 274 adult healthy subjects in 2019. The relationship between anthropometric measurements and blood lipid values of individuals, full blood count inflammation markers, neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and lymphocyte monocyte ratio (LMR) were examined.. Results: The average age of the 274 subjects, who participated in the study, was 34 years. No significant differences were detected between the NLR, PLR and LMR ratios according to the BMI scores. A very weak and negative correlation was detected between PLR and skeletal muscle, basal metabolic rate, body fluid amount and lean mass; and a weak and negative correlation was detected between HDL and BMI, body fat amount, and internal fat amount. A weak and positive correlation was detected between NLR and LDL. Conclusion: There was a very weak correlation between anthropometric values and inflammation markers, a weak-moderate correlation between blood lipid levels, and a weak correlation between inflammation markers and cholesterol levels.

Background: The studies reported an association between body mass index (BMI) and diastolic function in metabolically healthy individuals. The relationship between the BMI and diastolic dysfunction (DD) of metabolically healthy who recovered from COVID-19 without hospitalization and who have effort dyspnea has not been adequately studied yet. This study aimed to characterize the association between BMI and diastolic function in an uncomplicated group with preserved ejection fraction. Materials and Methods: The study included 50 (17 males and 33 females) patients and 50 (20 males and 30 females) healthy control subjects. A transthoracic echocardiogram was performed in all patients. Results: There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of age (p=0.101), gender (p=0.534), and BMI (p=0.070). C-reactive protein (CRP) (p=0.005) and D-dimer (p=0.009) were significantly higher in the patient group. DD was significantly higher in the patient group (p<0.001). When controlling for the effect of age in the patient group, a significant negative correlation was found between BMI and E/e' ratio (r=0.428; p=0.001), while this significance was not detected in the control group (r=0.118; p=0.414). According to the linear regression analysis, BMI had a significant and positive predictive effect on the E/e' ratio (p=0.004). According to the logistic regression analysis, BMI was found to have a predictive effect on the diagnosis of DD (p=0.007). Conclusions: Obesity has been associated with severe COVID-19 infection through impaired ventilation. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the demographic characteristics of platelet apheresis donors during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, to examine the association of platelet counts with blood groups and body mass index (BMI), and to characterize the effects of BMI on platelet apheresis donation. Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, the demographic characteristics of platelet apheresis donors admitted to our center between January 2020 and January 2021 were examined, and hemogram parameters, previous platelet donation frequencies, and blood groups information were recorded. The relationship between donors' platelet counts, blood groups, and BMI were analyzed. Results: There was no statistically significant relationship between the platelet counts and blood groups. Although platelet counts were higher in Rh positive donors, no statistically significant relationship was found between platelet counts and the Rh group (p=0.675). Even though the platelet counts were lower in low-weight donors, there was no statistically significant relationship between platelet count and BMI groups (p=0.134). The lower collected platelet counts of the normal group, compared to the obese group, was found to be statistically significant (p=0.001). The number of donations for the overweight group being higher than the normal and obese groups was found to be statistically significant (p=0.002). Conclusion: Even though the platelet count increases with obesity, it does not have any statistical significance in healthy platelet donors. In conclusion, obesity does not have an inverse relationship with platelet apheresis donation and high BMI should not be considered as a prognostic factor for donation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: In pregnancy, the most common metabolic disorder is Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is glucose intolerance that first appears during pregnancy or is diagnosed. Especially in late pregnancy, the fetüs, rapidly growing glucose metabolism, directs glucose and amino acids to the fetus. The mother's energy needs are arranged in the provision (free fatty acids, ketones, and glycerol) from alternative sources. It is the irisin the main function is turning from white adipose tissue to brown adipose tissue, uncover energy as heat and induced by exercises, such as weight loss, reduction in insulin resistance, associated with obesity, glucose regulation and effects on lipid metabolism are known to have many physiological properties. This study, it is aimed to investigate the level of irisin, which is GDM involved in energy metabolism, a new hormone. Material and Method: In Firat University Faculty of Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, the 40 pregnant women diagnosed with GDM (Group 1) and 40 healthy pregnant women without any problems in pregnancy (Group 2) so that the total 80 patients were included in this study. These groups were divided into four subgroups, GDM in the second trimester, 20 patients (Group 1A), GDM in the third trimester, 20 patients (Group 1B), In the second trimester, 20 healthy patients (Group 2A), In the third trimester, 20 healthy patients (Group 2B). Results: In this study compared with control groups, serum irisin levels were increased significantly, including the 2. trimester higher (263.70±127.69 ng/ml) in the GDM group. There was no correlation between serum irisin level and BMI. Conclusion: In future studies, the necessity of questioned physical activity and exercise, the need for more extensive experimental and clinical studies, and if the pathophysiological mechanisms between the iris and GDM are illuminated, the clinical conclusion was reached irisin related options can be treated. Amaç: Bu çalışmada meme küçültme amelyiatı sonrası, hasta demografik özellikleri, ameliyat teknikleri ve ameliyat sonrası bakımın hasta memnuniyetine etkisi değerlendirilmiştir.Gereç ve Yöntem: Meme küçültme ameliyatı geçiren hastalar arasından, ameliyat öncesi ve ameliyat sonrası altıncı aylık dönemde Breast-Q meme redüksiyonu modülü anketi doldurmayı kabul eden hastalar çalışmaya dahil edildi. Hastaların evlilik durumları, çocuk sahibi olup olmadıkları, sigara kullanımı, boy ve kiloları, yaşları ameliyat öncesinde sorularak kaydedildi. Ameliyat sonrası dren kullanılıp kullanılmadığı, cilt dikişleri olup olmadığı, herhangi bir komplikasyon gelişip gelişmediği, postoperatif yatış gün sayısı, hastanede kaldığı odada başka hasta bulunup bulunmadığı sorgulanarak kayıt altına alındı. Bulgular: Çalışmaya 76 hasta dahil edildi. Ortalama yaş 45.8 ve ortalama vücut kitle indeksi (VKİ) 29.2 idi. Ameliyat sonrası memelerden tatmin, psikososyal, cinsel ve fiziksel iyilik hali puanları ameliyat öncesi puanlardan anlamlı derecede yüksekti. Yaşlı kadınlarda memelerden memnuniyet ve psikososyal iyilik hali ameliyat öncesi puanlarda daha yüksekti. Genç hastalar ve normal kilolu hastalar ameliyat sonrası fiziksel iyilikten daha yüksek puan aldı. Ameliyat sonrası komplikasyonu olan hastalarda memelerden memnuniyet, cinsel ve fiziksel iyilik hali, bilgi memnuniyeti, cerrah ve tıbbi malzeme puanları anlamlı olarak düşüktü.Sonuç: Komplikasyon olmayan cerrahinin, hasta memnuniyetini artıran en güçlü faktör olduğu görüldü. Yaş ve VKİ gibi hasta demografisi bilgileri, hasta memnuniyetini arttırmak için hasta seçiminde kullanılabilecek kriterlerdir.

Objective: Children with thalassemia major (TM) are prone to growth failure and micronutrient deficiency. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate nutritional status, anthropometrics, and bone mineralization defects in patients with regular blood transfusion. Methods: Data obtained were analyzed by evaluating laboratory tests, anthropometric measures, and bone mineral density. Results: This study included 29 patients (62% male and 38% female) with a mean age of 12.26±4.74 years, mean pre-transfusion hemoglobin of 8.64±1.01 g/dL, and mean serum ferritin of 1158.6±556.8 ng/mL. Vitamin D (72.4%), selenium (72.4%), and folate (37.9%) deficiencies were most frequent. Hypocalcemia was observed in 17.2%, hypomagnesemia in 3.5%, and decreased ceruloplasmin in 10.3% of patients. Folate was higher between 2 and 6 years old (p=0.028). Ceruloplasmin was higher between 6 and 10 years old (p=0.018). Selenium was significantly higher in patients with a ferritin of =1,500 (p=0.008). No significant ferritin-related differences were found in other micronutrients (p>0.05). Body mass index (BMI) were <5 percentile (p) in 31% of patient, whereas none was >95 p. Height in 24.5% and weight in 20.7% of patients were <3 p, whereas none with >97 p. BMI of patients aged 10-18 years was significantly higher (p=0.001). Anthropometric percentiles did not significantly differ in the mean serum ferritin and micronutrient levels. Hypoparathyroidism was observed in 13.8% and hypothyroidism in 3.5% of patients. Low bone density was detected in 14.8% (2 osteopenic and 2 osteoporotic) of patients. Bone mineral density did not significantly differ in the ferritin and micronutrient levels. Conclusions: Nutritional support and deficiency prevention are important to minimize the burden of complications and increase the life expectancy and quality in patients with TM.
