13. Hardware-in-the-loop tecniques for complex systems analysis: Bibliometric analysis of available literature

Abstract

Simulating complex systems in real time presents both significant advantages and challenges. Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation has emerged as an interesting technique for addressing these challenges. While HIL has gained attention in the scientific literature, its application in energy studies and power systems remains scattered and challenging to locate. This paper aims to provide an assessment of the penetration of the HIL technique in energy studies and power systems. The analysis of the literature reveals that HIL is predominantly employed in evaluating electrical systems (smart grids, microgrids, wind systems), with limited application in thermal energy systems (energy storage). Notably, the combination of electrical hardware-in-the-loop (EHIL) and thermal hardware-in-the-loop (THIL) techniques has found application in the assessment of vehicle thermal management systems and smart cities and, recently, has also been adopted in building systems. The findings highlight the potential for further exploration and expansion of the HIL technique in diverse energy domains, emphasizing the need for addressing challenges such as hardware-software compatibility, real-time data acquisition, and system complexity. Abstract

Thermal energy storage (TES) allows the existing mismatch between supply and demand in energy systems to be overcome. Considering temperatures above 150 °C, there are major potential benefits for applications, such as process heat and electricity production, where TES coupled with concentrating solar power (CSP) plants can increase the penetration of renewable energies. To this end, this paper performs a critical analysis of the literature on the current and most promising concrete energy storage technologies, identifying five challenges that must be overcome for the successful exploitation of this technology. With these five challenges in mind, this paper proposes an approach that uses a new modular design of concrete-based TES. A preliminary study of the feasibility of the proposed system was performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques, showing promising results.

Abstract

The use of concrete is showing great potential as thermal energy storage material for concentrating solar power plants (CSP) due to its versatility, relatively low cost, and the possibility to reach a high operating temperature, above 500ºC thus increasing the plant efficiency. However, actual configurations based on concrete show different drawbacks including difficulties during the manufacturing on-site, different thermal expansion coefficients between concrete and pipes, and poor thermal conductivity of concrete. In order to address those challenges, this study proposes a new TES concrete tank concept based on three main pillars: modularity, improved concrete formulation, and direct contact concept. A preliminary assessment of the thermal performances of the new concept was analyzed through simulations showing the temperature distribution of the modules.

Abstract

Mitigation option are not yet being implemented at the scale required to limit global warming to well below 2°C. Various factors have been identified that inhibit the implementation of specific mitigation options. Yet, an integrated assessment of key barriers and enablers is lacking. Here we present a comprehensive framework to assess which factors inhibit and enable the implementation of mitigation options. The framework comprises six dimensions, each encompassing different criteria: geophysical, environmental-ecological, technological, economic, sociocultural, and institutional feasibility. We demonstrate the approach by assessing to what extent each criterion and dimension affects the feasibility of six mitigation options. The assessment reveals that institutional factors inhibit the implementation of many options that need to be addressed to increase their feasibility. Of all the options assessed, many factors enable the implementation of solar energy, while only a few barriers would need to be addressed to implement solar energy at scale.

Abstract

El almacenamiento de energía térmica (TES) es esencial para mejorar la penetración de las energías renovables. Entre todas las tecnologías de almacenamiento, el almacenamiento de energía térmica por calor latente (LTES) con el uso de materiales de cambio de fase ha ganado atención debido a su alta densidad energética. La macro-encapsulación es la técnica más común para incluir PCM en un depósito de almacenamiento. Sin embargo, el diseño del almacenamiento y la distribución del PCM macro-encapsulado tienen un gran impacto sobre la transferencia de calor y la capacidad de almacenamiento de energía. En este estudio se probó experimentalmente un depósito de PCM a escala piloto con una capacidad de almacenamiento de 13 kWh utilizando PCM macro-encapsulado con dos factores de empaquetamiento diferentes. Thermal energy storage (TES) is essential to improve the penetration of renewable energies. Among all storage technologies, latent heat thermal energy storage (LTES) using phase change materials has gained attention due to its high energy density. Macro-encapsulation is the most common technique to include PCM in a storage tank. However, the design of the storage and the distribution of the macro-encapsulated PCM have a great impact on heat transfer and energy storage capacity. In this study, a pilot-scale PCM tank with a storage capacity of 13 kWh was experimentally tested using macro-encapsulated PCM with two different packaging factors.
