The low-lying dipole strength in the 90,94Zr nuclei was investigated via (p,p′γ) at 80 MeV and (α,α′γ) at 130 MeV. The experiments, made at RCNP, used the magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden for the scattered particles and the array CAGRA with HPGe detectors for the γ-decay. For 94Zr these are the first data for both reactions and for 90Zr these are the first data with (p,p′γ) and the first ones at high resolution for (α,α′γ). The comparison of the present results for the two nuclei with existing (γ,γ′) data shows that both nuclear probes produce an excitation pattern different than that of the electromagnetic probes. DWBA calculations were made using form factors deduced from transition densities, based on RPA calculations, characterized by a strong neutron component at the nuclear surface. A combined analysis of the two reactions was performed for the first time to investigate the isoscalar character of the 1− states in 90,94Zr. The (p,p′γ) cross section was calculated using values for the isoscalar electric dipole energy-weighted sum rule (E1 ISEWSR) obtained from the (α,α′γ) data. The isoscalar strength for 90Zr was found to exhaust 20 ± 2.5% of the EWSR in the energy range up to 12 MeV. In case of 94Zr, a strength of 9 ± 1.1% of the EWSR was found in the range up to 8.5 MeV. Although an overall general description was obtained in the studied energy intervals, not all proton cross sections were well reproduced using the isoscalar strength from (α,α′γ). This might suggest mixing of isoscalar and isovector components and that this mixing and the degree of collectivity are not the same for all the 1− states below the particle binding energy.

Spectroscopic factors of neutron-hole and proton-hole states in 131Sn and 131In, respectively, were measured using one-nucleon removal reactions from doubly magic 132Sn at relativistic energies. For 131In, a 2910(50)-keV γ ray was observed for the first time and tentatively assigned to a decay from a 5=2− state at 3275(50) keV to the known 1=2− level at 365 keV. The spectroscopic factors determined for this new excited state and three other single-hole states provide first evidence for a strong fragmentation of singlehole strength in 131Sn and 131In. The isospin characters of low-energy dipole excitations in neutron-rich unstable nucleus 20O were investigated, for the first time in unstable nuclei. Two spectra obtained from a dominant isovector probe (View the MathML sourceO20+Au) and a dominant isoscalar probe (View the MathML sourceO20+α) were compared and analyzed by the distorted-wave Born approximation to extract independently the isovector and isoscalar dipole strengths. Two known 1−1− states with large isovector dipole strengths at energies of 5.36(5) MeV (View the MathML source11−) and 6.84(7) MeV (View the MathML source12−) were also excited by the isoscalar probe. These two states were found to have different isoscalar dipole strengths, 2.70(32)% (View the MathML source11−) and 0.67(12)% (View the MathML source12−), respectively, in exhaustion of the isoscalar dipole-energy-weighted sum rule. Background: The low-lying electric dipole strength provides insights into the parameters of the nuclear equation of state via its connection with the pygmy dipole resonance and nuclear neutron skin thickness.Purpose: The aim was to complement the systematic of the pygmy dipole resonance and first study its behavior across the $N=28$ neutron shell closure.Methods: Photon-scattering cross sections of states of $^{50,54}\mathrm{Cr}$ were measured up to an excitation energy of 9.7 MeV via the nuclear resonance fluorescence method using $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray beams from bremsstrahlung and Compton backscattering.Results: Transitions strengths, spin and parity quantum number, and average branching ratios for 55 excited states, 44 of which were observed for the first time, were determined. The comparison between the total observed strengths of the isotopes $^{50,52,54}\mathrm{Cr}$ shows a significant increase above the shell closure.Conclusions: The evolution of the pygmy dipole resonance is heavily influenced by the shell structure.

We present an extensive experimental study of the recently predicted pygmy quadrupole resonance (PQR) in Sn isotopes, where complementary probes were used. In this study, (alpha,alpha 'gamma) and (gamma,gamma ') experiments were performed on Sn-124. In both reactions, J(pi)=2(+) states below an excitation energy of 5 MeV were populated. The E2 strength integrated over the full transition densities could be extracted from the (gamma,gamma ') experiment, while the (alpha, alpha 'gamma) experiment at the chosen kinematics strongly favors the excitation of surface modes because of the strong alpha-particle absorption in the nuclear interior. The excitation of such modes is in accordance with the quadrupole-type oscillation of the neutron skin predicted by a microscopic approach based on self-consistent density functional theory and the quasiparticle-phonon model (QPM). The newly determined gamma-decay branching ratios hint at a non-statistical character of the E2 strength, as it has also been recently pointed out for the case of the pygmy dipole resonance (PDR). This allows us to distinguish between PQR-type and multiphonon excitations and, consequently, supports the recent first experimental indications of a PQR in Sn-124. (C) 2015 The Authors. We report on the first (p,p′γ) experiments at Ep=80 MeV to investigate the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) in the semi-magic nucleus 140Ce. This experiment is the latest in a series of experiments to investigate the PDR with different complementary probes to provide a multi-messenger data set on the properties of the PDR in 140Ce. In addition, calculations within the Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) have been performed. Cross sections have been calculated for proton- as well as α-scattering reactions based on the transition densities obtained from the QPM, not only at the RPA level, but including the full model space of up to 3p–3h configurations. This allows for the first time to compare the calculations to the experimental results on an absolute scale for single excitations. Agreement between QPM and experiment is observed, which proves the high accuracy of the calculated transition densities for individual PDR states. In this paper a method for lifetime measurements in the sub-picosecond regime via the Doppler-shift attenuation method (DSAM) following the inelastic proton scattering reaction is presented. In a pioneering experiment we extracted the lifetimes of 30 excited low-spin states of 96 Ru, taking advantage of the coincident detection of scattered protons and de-exciting γ-rays as well as the large number of particle and γ-ray detectors provided by the SONIC@HORUS setup at the University of Cologne. The large amount of new experimental data shows that this technique is suited for the measurement of lifetimes of excited low-spin states, especially for isotopes with a low isotopic abundance, where ( n , n ′ γ ) or – in case of investigating dipole excitations – ( γ , γ ′ ) experiments are not feasible due to the lack of sufficient isotopically enriched target material.

The $E2/M1$ multipole mixing ratio ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2}$ of the ${1}_{\mathrm{sc}}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}_{1}^{+}$ $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray decay in $^{156}\mathrm{Gd}$ and hence the isovector $E2$ transition rate of the scissors mode of a well-deformed rotational nucleus has been measured for the first time. It has been obtained from the angular distribution of an artificial quasimonochromatic linearly polarized $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray beam of energy 3.07(6) MeV scattered inelastically off an isotopically highly enriched $^{156}\mathrm{Gd}$ target. The data yield first direct support for the deformation dependence of effective proton and neutron quadrupole boson charges in the framework of algebraic nuclear models. First evidence for a low-lying ${J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={2}^{+}$ member of the rotational band of states on top of the ${1}^{+}$ band head is obtained, too, indicating a significant signature splitting in the $K=1$ scissors mode rotational band.

The ( α , α ′ γ ) reaction at E α = 136 MeV was used to study the electric dipole response in the open-shell vibrational nucleus 94Mo below the neutron-separation threshold. The coincidence experiment has been performed at the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut in Groningen, The Netherlands, exploiting the Big-Bite Spectrometer and an array of large volume High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors. Due to the excellent energy resolution and high selectivity to transitions stemming from the pygmy dipole resonance, singles α-scattering cross sections could be determined for individual electric dipole excitations between 4 and 8 MeV. For three of the excited low-lying J π = 1 − states in 94Mo a γ-decay branch into the J π = 2 1 + state could be observed. The experiment extends the systematic studies of the pygmy dipole resonance by real-photon scattering ( γ , γ ′ ) experiments and ( α , α ′ γ ) experiments. Recently, a ( γ , γ ′ ) experiment on 94Mo was performed at the Darmstadt High-Intensity Photon Setup at the S-DALINAC in Darmstadt, Germany, permitting the comparison of B ( E 1 ) ↑ strength distribution and α-scattering cross sections.

Background: Two-phonon excitations originating from the coupling of two collective one-phonon states are of great interest in nuclear structure physics. One possibility to generate low-lying $E1$ excitations is the coupling of quadrupole and octupole phonons.Purpose: In this work, the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-decay behavior of candidates for the ${({2}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{3}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}})}_{{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}}$ state in the doubly magic nucleus $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ and in the heavier and semimagic nucleus $^{140}\mathrm{Ce}$ is investigated.Methods: $(\stackrel{P\vec}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ experiments have been carried out at the High Intensity $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray Source $(\mathrm{HI}\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{S})$ facility in combination with the high-efficiency $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy setup ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{3}$ consisting of HPGe and ${\mathrm{LaBr}}_{3}$ detectors. The setup enables the acquisition of $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence data and, hence, the detection of direct decay paths.Results: In addition to the known ground-state decays, for $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ the decay into the ${3}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state was observed, while for $^{140}\mathrm{Ce}$ the direct decays into the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ and the ${0}_{2}^{+}$ state were detected. The experimentally deduced transition strengths and excitation energies are compared to theoretical calculations in the framework of EDF theory plus QPM approach and systematically analyzed for $N=82$ isotones. In addition, negative parities for two $J=1$ states in $^{44}\mathrm{Ca}$ were deduced simultaneously.Conclusions: The experimental findings together with the theoretical calculations support the two-phonon character of the ${1}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ excitation in the light-to-medium-mass nucleus $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ as well as in the stable even-even $N=82$ nuclei.

The low-lying $M1$-strength of the open-shell nucleus $^{50}$Cr has been studied with the method of nuclear resonance fluorescence up to 9.7 MeV, using bremsstrahlung at the superconducting Darmstadt linear electron accelerator S-DALINAC and Compton backscattered photons at the High Intensity $\gamma$-ray Source (HI$\gamma$S) facility between 6 and 9.7 MeV of the initial photon energy. Fifteen $1^{+}$ states have been observed between 3.6 and 9.7 MeV. Following our analysis, the lowest $1^{+}$ state at 3.6 MeV can be considered as an isovector orbital mode with some spin admixture. The obtained results generally match the estimations and trends typical for the scissors-like mode. Detailed calculations within the Skyrme Quasiparticle Random-Phase-Approximation method and the Large-Scale Shell Model justify our conclusions. The calculated distributions of the orbital current for the lowest $1^{+}$-state suggest the schematic view of Lipparini and Stringari (isovector rotation-like oscillations inside the rigid surface) rather than the scissors-like picture of Lo Iudice and Palumbo. The spin M1 resonance is shown to be mainly generated by spin-flip transitions between the orbitals of the $fp$-shell.

However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process ow and r-process -decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will oer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., This project was supported by the HGF Young Investigators Project VH-NG-327, EMMI, H4F, HGS-HIRe, JINA, NAVI, DFG and ATHENA.

Background: One-phonon mixed-symmetry quadrupole excitations are a well-known feature of near-spherical, vibrational nuclei. Their interpretation as a fundamental building block of vibrational structures is supported by the identification of multiphonon states resulting from a coupling of fully-symmetric and mixed-symmetric quadrupole phonons. In addition, the observation of strong M1 transitions between low-lying 3(-) and 4(+) states has been interpreted as an evidence for one-phonon mixed-symmetry excitations of octupole and hexadecapole character. Purpose: The aim of the present study is to identify collective one-and two-phonon excitations in the heaviest stable N = 52 isotone Ru-96 based on a measurement of absolute M1, E1, and E2 transition strengths. Methods: Inelastic proton-scattering experiments have been performed at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory (WNSL), Yale University, and the Institute for Nuclear Physics (IKP), University of Cologne. From the acquired proton-gamma and gamma gamma coincidence data we deduced spins of excited states, gamma-decay branching ratios, and multipole mixing ratios, as well as lifetimes of excited states via the Doppler-shift attenuation method (DSAM). Results: Based on the new experimental data on absolute transition strengths, we identified the 2(+) and 3(+) members of the two-phonon mixed-symmetry quintuplet (2(1,ms)(+) circle times 2(1,s)(+)). Furthermore, we observed strong M1 transitions between low-lying 3(-) and 4(+) states suggesting one-phonon symmetric andmixed-symmetric octupole and hexadecapole components in their wave functions, respectively. The experimental results are compared to sdg-IBM-2 and shell-model calculations. Conclusions: Both the sdg-IBM-2 and the shell-model calculations are able to describe key features of mixed-symmetry excitations of Ru-96. Moreover, they support the one-phonon mixed-symmetry hexadecapole assignment of the experimental 4(2)(+) state.

The perspectives for photonuclear experiments at the new Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) facility are discussed in view of the need to accumulate novel and more precise nuclear data. The parameters of the ELI-NP gamma beam system are presented. The emerging experimental program, which will be realized at ELI-NP, is presented. Examples of day-one experiments with the nuclear resonance fluorescence technique, photonuclear reaction measurements, photofission experiments and studies of nuclear collective excitation modes and competition between various decay channels are discussed. The advantages which ELI-NP provides for all these experiments compared to the existing facilities are discussed.

In contrast to heavier nuclei, a state-to-state change in isospin character was revealed in 48Ca and a dominant isoscalar excitation was found which is interpreted as an isoscalar oscillation. Recently, protons at 80 MeV were used as an additional hadronic probe in a p-γ coincidence experiment on 140Ce for the first time. Results of the experiments on 48Ca and first results of the 140Ce will be presented in this contribution.

The low-lying positive- and negative-parity states in $^{168}\mathrm{Yb}$ have been investigated by means of the $(\ensuremath{\alpha},2\mathrm{n}\ensuremath{\gamma})$ fusion evaporation reaction. Using the coincidence method, the level scheme was corrected and extended up to 3 MeV, for both the positive- and negative-parity states. Using the new branching ratios determined in the present experiment, the $K$ quantum number was proposed for two negative-parity bands by direct comparison with the Alaga rule. Like in some other nuclei, one negative-parity band was established, decaying predominantly to the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-vibrational band. In a second experiment, the lifetimes of the low-lying excited states up to ${J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={6}^{+}$ in the ground-state band were measured by using the in-beam fast-timing method with the Bucharest mixed high-purity germanium (HPGe) and ${\mathrm{LaBr}}_{3}$:Ce detector array using the triple-$\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence method. Reduced $E2$ transition probabilities were extracted from the measured lifetimes and compared with the corresponding observables in neighboring isotopes, showing a smooth behavior with increasing mass. The positive- and negative-parity states as well as $E1$ and $E2$ transition probability ratios revealed by these experiments are compared with the interacting boson model in the $sd$ and $spdf$ boson space, and with the confined beta-soft rotor model, and are found to be in good agreement.

Background: Excitations with mixed proton-neutron symmetry have been previously observed in the $N=52$ isotones. Besides the well established quadrupole mixed-symmetry states (MSS), octupole and hexadecapole MSS have been recently proposed for the nuclei $^{92}$Zr and $^{94}$Mo. Purpose: The heaviest stable $N=52$ isotone $^{96}$Ru was investigated to study the evolution of octupole and hexadecapole MSS with increasing proton number. Methods: Two inelastic proton-scattering experiments on $^{96}$Ru were performed to extract branching ratios, multipole mixing ratios, and level lifetimes. From the combined data, absolute transition strengths were calculated. Results: Strong $M1$ transitions between the lowest-lying $3^-$ and $4^+$ states were observed, providing evidence for a one-phonon mixed-symmetry character of the $3^{(-)}_2$ and $4^+_2$ states. Conclusions: $sdg$-IBM-2 calculations were performed for $^{96}$Ru. The results are in excellent agreement with the experimental data, pointing out a one-phonon hexadecapole mixed-symmetry character of the $4^+_2$ state. The $\big< 3^-_1||M1||3^{(-)}_2\big>$ matrix element is found to scale with the $$ matrix element.

The E2/M1 multipole mixing ratio δ1→2 of the 1sc+→21+ transition of Gd was determined using results from high-statistics photon scattering. This provides a possibility for a new approach on the search of Jsc+ members of the rotational band built on the scissors mode. By application of Alaga’s rule, which is justifiable as 156Gd is a well-deformed rotor with good K quantum number, a transition strength of B(E2;2sc+→01+)=0.034(13) W.u. is estimated.

In addition to the well-established quadrupole mixed-symmetry states, octupole and hexadecapole excitations with mixed-symmetry character have been recently proposed for the N = 52 isotones 92Zr and 94Mo. We performed two inelastic proton-scattering experiments to study this kind of excitations in the heaviest stable N = 52 isotone 96Ru. From the combined experimental data of both experiments absolute transition strengths were extracted.

Two different experimental approaches were combined to study the electric dipole strength in the doubly-magic nucleus 48Ca below the neutron threshold. Real-photon scattering experiments using bremsstrahlung up to 9.9 MeV and nearly mono-energetic linearly polarized photons with energies between 6.6 and 9.51 MeV provided strength distribution and parities, and an (\alpha,\alpha'\gamma) experiment at E_{\alpha}=136 MeV gave cross sections for an isoscalar probe. The unexpected difference observed in the dipole response is compared to calculations using the first-order random-phase approximation and points to an energy-dependent isospin character. A strong isoscalar state at 7.6 MeV was identified for the first time supporting a recent theoretical prediction., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, as accepted in Phys. Lett. B

A dedicated setup for the in-beam measurement of absolute cross sections of astrophysically relevant charged-particle induced reactions is presented. These, usually very low, cross sections at energies of astrophysical interest are important to improve the modeling of the nucleosynthesis processes of heavy nuclei. Particular emphasis is put on the production of the $p$ nuclei during the astrophysical $\gamma$ process. The recently developed setup utilizes the high-efficiency $\gamma$-ray spectrometer HORUS, which is located at the 10 MV FN tandem ion accelerator of the Institute for Nuclear Physics in Cologne. The design of this setup will be presented and results of the recently measured $^{89}$Y(p,$\gamma$)$^{90}$Zr reaction will be discussed. The excellent agreement with existing data shows, that the HORUS spectrometer is a powerful tool to determine total and partial cross sections using the in-beam method with high-purity germanium detectors.

Excitation energy information from particle detectors can significantly improve the analysis process of γ-ray spectra and result in more detailed nuclear structure information. Therefore, a new setup at the HORUS γ-ray spectrometer at the University of Cologne has been installed, housing silicon particle detectors at up to eight positions.

At energies well below the isovector electric Giant Dipole Resonance, a concentration of electric dipole strength is observed in many stable and radioactive nuclei. This low-lying excitation mode is usually denoted as Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR). Different theoretical approaches can reproduce the gross features, like the energetic position and partly the excitation strength of the PDR, but they differ considerably in its underlying structural description. More sophisticated experiments looking for the isospin character, the detailed decay pattern, and the single-particle structure of the low-lying E1 excitations are therefore mandatory to gain a deeper understanding. This manuscript will give an overview about the most recent experimental results and present new experimental tools for the future.

Mixed-symmetry states of octupole (L = 3) and hexadecapole (L = 4) character have been recently proposed in the N = 52 isotones Zr-92 and Mo-94, based on strong M1 transitions to the lowest-lying 3(-) and 4(+) states, respectively. In order to investigate similar excitations in the heaviest stable N = 52 isotone Ru-96, two inelastic proton-scattering experiments have been performed at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory (WNSL), Yale University, USA and the Institute for Nuclear Physics, University of Cologne, Germany. From the combined data of both experiments, absolute E-1, M-1, and E2 transition strengths were extracted, allowing for the identification of candidates for MS octupole and hexadecapole states. The structure of the low-lying 4(+) states is investigated by means of sdg-IBM-2 calculations.

Last year, the new silicon-detector array SONIC with up to 8 silicon-detector positions was in- stalled inside the existing γ-ray spectrometer HORUS consisting of 14 HPGe detectors. The combined setup SONIC@HORUS allows for a coincident detection of γ-rays and light charged particles in the exit channel of inelastic scattering and transfer reactions. As a first physics case, the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) in 92 Mo has been investigated in a (p,p'γ) experiment at E p = 10.5 MeV. Since a specific excitation energy can be chosen offline in the coincidence data, the sensitivity to weak decay branchings of PDR states is increased. Additionally, a second reaction mechanism for the excitation of PDR states has been tested with the new setup. In a 119 Sn(d,pγ) transfer reaction at Ed = 8.5 MeV, PDR states in 120 Sn could be excited. Since this one-neutron transfer reaction is sensitive to the neutron single-particle structure, it could reveal new information on the microscopic structure of the PDR.

We report on our recent nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments on l52,l54,l56Gd. Decay branches of the scissors mode to intrinsic excitations are observed. They are interpreted as a new signature for a spherical-to-deformed nuclear shape phase transition.

In recent years, a systematic comparative study of the pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) using the (γ,γ') and the (α,α'γ) reactions on the nuclei 140Ce, 138Ba, 124Sn, 94Mo, and 48Ca was performed. The aim of this systematic study is to explore the structure of the PDR by the usage of two complementary probes and several different nuclei. The real-photon scattering experiments were performed at the S-DALINAC in Darmstadt, Germany, while the (α, α'γ) coincidence experiments were performed at the Big-Bite Spectrometer (BBS) at KVI in Groningen, The Netherlands. The comparison of the results from both kinds of experiments showed an energetic splitting of the PDR into two parts that might be due to the different isospin character of these states. First experimental results of the (α, α'γ) experiments on the nuclei 94Mo and 48Ca will be presented.
