1. The role of PET in a clinically silent and ultrasound negative synovitis in the course of rheumatoid arthritis - a case report

Abstract

We present a case report of a rheumatoid arthritis patient, who underwent a PET scan, which revealed inflammation of multiple joints, which was missed by both physical and ultrasound examinations. A 55-year old woman with a long-term rheumatoid arthritis, who had undergone arthroplasty of the left knee in the past, consulted with the rheumatologist for pain in the left knee. The physical examination revealed signs of inflammation in the left knee and right elbow. The inflammatory parameters were high. Ultrasound showed intraarticular effusion without signs of active synovitis in the left knee. The ultrasound assessment of the other joints (hands, wrists and feet) was also negative for active synovitis, while positron-emission tomography (PET) revealed increased glucose metabolism at the level of the medial side of the left knee, left radio-ulno-carpal joint, I-II-III metacarpo-phalangeal joints bilaterally, right II metatarso-phalangeal joint, and left II-III metatarso-phalangeal joints. This case report demonstrates that PET might be more sensitive than ultrasound in detecting subclinical joint inflammation.

2. Nanocomposite hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel for the treatment of esophageal fistulas

Abstract

Fistulas are abnormal connections between two body parts that can impair the quality of life. The use of biological glues represents the least invasive procedure to fill the fistula; however, it is limited by the need of multiple injections, the persistence of infection and the failure in the treatment of high-output fistulas. We describe herein the use of an injectable nanocomposite hydrogel that is able to form in situ a tissue-mimicking matrix as an innovative material for the treatment of esophageal fistulas. Injectable hydrogels that have the dual advantage of being implantable with a minimally invasive approach and of adapting their shape to the target cavity, while the introduction of mesoporous silica nanoparticles opens the possibility of drug/biomolecules delivery.The hydrogel is based on hyaluronic acid (HA), the crosslinking process occurs at physiological conditions leading to a hydrogel made of >96% by water and with a large-pore micro-architecture. The kinetic profile of the hydrogel formation is studied as a function of HA molecular weight and concentration with the aim of designing a material that is easily injectable with an endoscopic needle, is formed in a time compatible with the surgical procedure and has final mechanical properties suitable for cell proliferation. The in vivo experiments (porcine model) on esophageal-cutaneous fistulas, showed improved healing in the animals treated with the hydrogel compared with the control group.

Abstract

The use of nanostructured materials is increasingly widespread thanks to their particular properties that can improve the performance of devices in various scientific applications. One of them is in the architecture of perovskite solar cells characterized by high photoconversion efficiency values that make them able to compete with silicon solar cells. In this framework, we deposited TiO[Formula: see text] sponges by reactive sputtering based on a grazing-incidence geometry combined with the local oxidation of species. The deposited material gains 50% porosity in volume through depths of hundreds of nanometers and consists of a forest of uniform rods separated by mesopores (pipelines) arising from the grazing geometry. Many previous studies showed how TiO[Formula: see text] can improve the efficiency of perovskite solar cells. In this article, we investigated the change of the wettability values of the TiO[Formula: see text] samples before and after a postdeposition thermal annealing treatment. For comparison, the influence of the annealing on the wettability of the glass substrate is also reported.

Abstract

A 68-year-old man with a history of hypertension presented with recurrent subarachnoid bleeding. Brain MRI showed superficial siderosis, and diagnostic cerebral angiograms did not show any intracranial vascular malformation or arterial aneurism. Post mortem neuropathological examination of the brain was consistent with a diagnosis of cerebral amyloid angiopathy. Clinicians should be aware that cerebral amyloid angiopathy should be considered in patients with unexplained recurrent subarachnoid bleeding, even in cases without familial clustering or transthyretin variant.

Abstract

To investigate the possible role of melatonin on human luteal cell function. Corpora lutea were obtained from normally menstruating women (25–38 years old) in the midluteal phase (days 5–6 from ovulation) at the time of surgery for non-endocrine gynecologic diseases. The protocol was approved by the institutional review board of Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome and all patients provided written informed consent. The corpora lutea were dated on the basis of the presumptive day of ovulation (day 0) , determined by urinary luteinizing hormone (LH) peak, ultrasound detection of corpus luteum or disappearance of the dominant follicle, and a rise in the plasma P concentration. ELISA or EIA kit and immunohistochemistry were performed. Melatonin was able to increase progesterone release and to influence the balance between luteotrophic and luteolityc factors. In addition, melatonin expression and MT2 receptor were detected, confirming the direct action of this indoleamine on CL. Melatonin may play an intriguing role in direct regulation of CL function and in establishing and maintaining of initial pregnancy. In conclusion, melatonin could become a relevant medication for improving ovarian and luteal function and in the early stages of pregnancy, opening new opportunities for the management of several ovarian-luteal and pregnancy diseases.

Abstract

We report a case of unusual and unexplained cardiac death in an 18-years old female patient with congenital neurosensorial deafness. The fatal event was characterized by an initial syncopal episode, associated with a wide QRS tachycardia (around 110 bpm) but stable hemodynamic conditions. The patient, however, subsequently developed severe hypotension and progressive bradyarrhythmias until asystole and lack of cardiac response to resuscitation maneuvers and ventricular pacing.

Abstract

Background&Aims: GPR120 (encoded by FFAR4 gene) is a receptor for long chain fatty acids, activated by ω-3 PUFAs, and expressed in many cell types. Its role in the context of colorectal cancer (CRC) is still puzzling with many controversial evidences. Here, we explored the involvement of epithelial GPR120 in the CRC development. Methods: Both in vitro and in vivo experiments were conducted to mimic the conditional deletion of the receptor from gut epithelium. Intestinal permeability and integrity of mucus layer were assessed by using Evans blue dye and immunofluorescence for MUC-2 protein, respectively. Microbiota composition, presence of lipid mediators and short chain fatty acids were analyzed in the stools of conditional GPR120 and wild type (WT) mice. Incidence and grade of tumors were evaluated in all groups of mice before and after colitis-associated cancer. Finally, GPR120 expression was analyzed in 9 human normal tissues, 9 adenomas, and 17 primary adenocarcinomas. Results: Our work for the first time highlight the role of the receptor in the progression of colorectal cancer. We observed that the loss of epithelial GPR120 in the gut results into increased intestinal permeability, microbiota translocation and dysbiosis, which turns into hyperproliferation of epithelial cells, likely through the activation of β -catenin signaling. Therefore, the loss of GPR120 represents an early event of CRC, but avoid its progression as invasive cancer. Conclusion: these results demonstrate that the epithelial GPR120 receptor is essential to maintain the mucosal barrier integrity and to prevent CRC developing. Therefore, our data pave the way to GPR120 as an useful marker for the phenotypic characterization of CRC lesions and as new potential target for CRC prevention.

This outcome has occurred in large part because DoD decision-makers have demanded more complex, better maintained systems over time. Defense inflation is likely to abate when resourcing levels no longer accommodate these demands. Defense inflation should be viewed partially as a symptom, not just as a cause, of increased defense spending.

Abstract

The crystal structure of L. salivarius transketolase has been determined to high resolution in the presence and absence of thiamine pyrophosphate. The structures are presented with a brief comparison with other known transketolase structures., Probiotic bacterial strains have been shown to enhance the health of the host through a range of mechanisms including colonization, resistance against pathogens, secretion of antimicrobial compounds and modulation of the activity of the innate immune system. Lactobacillus salivarius UCC118 is a well characterized probiotic strain which survives intestinal transit and has many desirable host-interaction properties. Probiotic bacteria display a wide range of catabolic activities, which determine their competitiveness in vivo. Some lactobacilli are heterofermentative and can metabolize pentoses, using a pathway in which transketolase and transaldolase are key enzymes. L. salivarius UCC118 is capable of pentose utilization because it encodes the key enzymes on a megaplasmid. The crystal structures of the megaplasmid-encoded transketolase with and without the enzyme cofactor thiamine pyrophosphate have been determined. Comparisons with other known transketolase structures reveal a high degree of structural conservation in both the catalytic site and the overall conformation. This work extends structural knowledge of the transketolases to the industrially and commercially important Lactobacillus genus.

Abstract

Background Bone marrow stem cells (BMSC) can participate to liver regeneration. However, conflicting results have been reported on this topic in patients undergoing liver resection. Aims To assess the impact of liver resection extent and presence of underlying liver disease in modulating BMSC mobilization. Methods We enrolled 29 patients undergoing liver resection of different extents, 5 surgical controls and 10 blood donors. Circulating CD133+ BMSC were measured by flow cytometry at different time-points after surgery. The hepatic commitment of mobilized BMSC was investigated by polymerase chain reaction. Liver specimens were collected during surgery for histopathological analysis. Hepatocyte growth factor and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor serum levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results BMSC mobilization was found in patients undergoing major liver resection, especially in the presence of underlying disease. Ductular reactions were noted in patients with chronic hepatopathy and the hepatic progenitor-like cells expressed CD133, NCAM, cytokeratin-19, and alpha-fetoprotein. Hepatocyte growth factor and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor levels increased following liver resection and the contemporaneous presence of liver disease was associated with their highest raise. Conclusions Liver repair is mainly an endogenous process. BMSC become important in case of extensive resection, especially in the presence of underlying hepatopathy and hepatic progenitor-like cells activation. Hepatocyte growth factor and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor seem to be involved in the dynamics underlying hepatic regeneration and BMSC recruitment.

Abstract

Background Adipose tissue-derived stromal cells (ATSCs) hold great promises in regenerative medicine. In the last decade, several studies have reported the plasticity of ATSCs toward a hepatocyte-like phenotype. Nonetheless, the molecular mechanisms underlying the conversion from a mesenchymal to an epithelial phenotype remain poorly understood. Aim In this study, we compared the full genome expression profiles of ATSCs cultured for 4 weeks under pro-hepatogenic conditions to undifferentiated ATSCs, in order to depict the molecular events involved in ATSC hepatic transdifferentiation. Methods Analysis was performed using the Affymetrix human focus arrays. Sets of differentially expressed genes were functionally categorized in order to understand which pathways drive the hepatic conversion and interesting targets were validated by Q-PCR. Results ATSC-derived hepatocyte-like cells activate several genes associated with specific liver functions, including protein metabolism, innate immune response regulation, and biodegradation of toxic compounds. Furthermore, microarray analysis highlighted downregulation of transcripts associated with the mesenchymal lineage, while epithelial-related genes were overexpressed. Conclusion Our data suggest that the in vitro system used in this study drove ATSCs toward a hepatic conversion through a subtle regulation of molecular pathways controlling lineage commitment that promote mesenchymal-epithelial transition.

Abstract

Using data from FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, we present a model independent partial-wave analysis of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} S-wave amplitude from the decay D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}. The S-wave is a generic complex function to be determined directly from the data fit. The P- and D-waves are parameterized by a sum of Breit-Wigner amplitudes. The measurement of the S-wave amplitude covers the whole elastic range of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} system.

Abstract

We present a search for a pentaquark decaying strongly to $\Xi^-\pi^-$ in $\gamma N$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy up to 25 GeV/c^2. Finding no evidence for such a state in the mass range of 1480 MeV/c^2 to 2400 MeV/c^2, we set limits on the yield and on the cross section times branching ratio relative to $\Xi^*(1530)^0$.

Abstract

We study the decay of D s + mesons into final states involving a K S 0 and report the discovery of Cabibbo suppressed decay modes D s + → K S 0 π − π + π + ( 179 ± 36 events) and D s + → K S 0 π + ( 113 ± 26 events). The branching fraction ratios for the new modes are Γ ( D s + → K S 0 π − π + π + ) Γ ( D s + → K S 0 K − π + π + ) = 0.18 ± 0.04 ± 0.05 and Γ ( D s + → K S 0 π + ) Γ ( D s + → K S 0 K + ) = 0.104 ± 0.024 ± 0.014 .

Abstract

Aim The pathogenesis of cryptoglandular anal fistula (AF) is still debated. Tissue inflammation could play a primary role. The pathological process of epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) might be involved but has never been investigated. Method In a prospective pilot study, twelve patients with an anal fistula had a fistulectomy. The excised track was divided into proximal (intrasphincteric) and distal (extrasphincteric) parts which were subjected to standard histopathological examination. The cytokines IL-8 and IL-1beta were analyzed as markers of inflammation, while EMT was evaluated by expression of TGF-beta, Vimentin, Zeb-1, Snail and E-Cadherin. Both mRNA and proteins expressions of these molecules were investigated by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry and were compared with the normal adjacent tissue. Results Chronic inflammation and granulation tissue and a stratified epithelium were evident on standard histopathological examination. The cytokine IL-8 was more expressed in the proximal than the distal part of the track (4.34 vs. 3.60), while the reverse was found for IL-1beta (1.33 vs 2.01); both were more intensely expressed compared with the normal anal mucosa. EMT was demonstrated, in both proximal and distal parts of the track, with an increase of TGF-beta, Vimentin, Zeb-1 and Snail and a mean decrease of E-Cadherin. Western-blot analysis and immunohistochemistry confirmed the protein expression. Conclusion The study suggests that chronic inflammation is present in cryptoglandular fistula. The inflammatory pattern might be different in the proximal than in the distal part of the fistula track. The cytokines IL-1beta and IL-8 could play a possible role in fistula formation. Abstract

Using data collected by the high energy photoproduction experiment FOCUS at Fermilab we performed a Dalitz plot analysis of the Cabibbo favored decay D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}. This study uses 53653 Dalitz-plot events with a signal fraction of {approx} 97%, and represents the highest statistics, most complete Dalitz plot analysis for this channel. Results are presented and discussed using two different formalisms. The first is a simple sum of Breit-Wigner functions with freely fitted masses and widths. It is the model traditionally adopted and serves as comparison with the already published analyses. The second uses a K-matrix approach for the dominant S-wave, in which the parameters are fixed by first fitting K{pi} scattering data and continued to threshold by Chiral Perturbation Theory. We show that the Dalitz plot distribution for this decay is consistent with the assumption of two body dominance of the final state interactions and the description of these interactions is in agreement with other data on the K{pi} final state.

Abstract

Using a large sample of D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}K{sup +}{pi}{sup +} decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present the first non-parametric analysis of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} amplitudes in D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}K{sup +}{pi}{sup +} decay. The technique is similar to the technique used for our non-parametric measurements of the D{sup +} {yields} {bar K}*{sup 0} e{sup +}{nu} form factors. Although these results are in rough agreement with those of E687, we observe a wider S-wave contribution for the {bar K}*{sub 0}{sup 0}(1430) contribution than the standard, PDG [1] Breit-Wigner parameterization. We have some weaker evidence for the existence of a new, D-wave component at low values of the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} mass.

Abstract

ContextThe role of 18F-labeled 2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) in the post-operative monitoring of patients with adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is still unclear.ObjectiveTo assess the accuracy of FDG PET/CT to diagnose ACC recurrence in a real world setting.Design and methodsRetrospective evaluation of data of 57 patients with presumed ACC recurrence at CT scan who underwent FDG PET/CT within a median time of 20 days. We compared the results of either FDG PET/CT or CT with a gold standard confirmation of recurrence (positive histopathology report of removed/biopsied lesions or radiological progression of target lesions at follow-up) to assess their diagnostic performance at different body sites to correctly categorize target lesions. We also assessed whether FDG PET/CT findings may be useful to inform the management strategy.ResultsIn 48 patients with confirmed ACC recurrence, we found that FDG PET/CT had lower sensitivity than CT in diagnosing liver and lung recurrences of ACC. FDG PET/CT had higher specificity than CT in categorizing liver lesions. FDG PET/CT had a greater positive likelihood ratio than CT to identify liver and abdominal ACC recurrences. The management strategy was changed based on FDG PET/CT findings in 12 patients (21.1%).ConclusionsThe greater sensitivity of CT may be partly expected due the specific inclusion criteria of the study; however, the greater specificity of FDG PET/CT was particularly useful in ruling out suspected ACC recurrences found by CT. Thus, use of FDG PET/CT as a second-line test in the post-operative surveillance of ACC patients following CT finding of a potential recurrence may have a significant impact on patient management.

Abstract

Using data collected by the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab, we present a new measurement of the charm semileptonic branching ratio BR ( D + → ρ 0 μ + ν ) BR ( D + → K ¯ ∗ 0 μ + ν ) . From a sample of 320 ± 44 and 11372 ± 161 D + → ρ 0 μ + ν and D + → K − π + μ + ν events respectively, we find BR ( D + → ρ 0 μ + ν ) BR ( D + → K ¯ ∗ 0 μ + ν ) = 0.041 ± 0.006 ( stat ) ± 0.004 ( syst ) .

Abstract

Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, we present a new measurement of the weak decay-asymmetry parameter α Λ c in Λ c + → Λ π + decay. Comparing particle with antiparticle decays, we obtain the first measurement of the CP violation parameter A ≡ α Λ c + α Λ ¯ c α Λ c − α Λ ¯ c . We obtain α Λ c = − 0.78 ± 0.16 ± 0.19 and A = − 0.07 ± 0.19 ± 0.24 where errors are statistical and systematic.

Abstract

Using a large sample of D + → K − π + μ + ν decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present the first measurements of the helicity basis form factors free from the assumption of spectroscopic pole dominance. We also present the first information on the form factor that controls the s -wave interference discussed in a previous paper by the FOCUS Collaboration. We find reasonable agreement with the usual assumption of spectroscopic pole dominance and measured form factor ratios.

Abstract

We review genetic programming principles, their application to FOCUS data samples, and use the method to study the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay D+ -> K+ pi+ pi- relative to its Cabibbo favored counterpart, D+ -> K- pi+ pi+. We find that this technique is able to improve upon more traditional analysis methods. To our knowledge, this is the first application of the genetic programming technique to High Energy Physics data., 39 pages

Abstract

We apply a genetic programming technique to search for the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decays Λ c + → p K + π − and D s + → K + K + π − . We normalize these decays to their Cabibbo favored partners and find BR ( Λ c + → p K + π − ) / BR ( Λ c + → p K − π + ) = ( 0.05 ± 0.26 ± 0.02 ) % and BR ( D s + → K + K + π − ) / BR ( D s + → K − K + π + ) = ( 0.52 ± 0.17 ± 0.11 ) % where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. Abstract

Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment, we have searched for T violation in charm meson decays using the four-body decay channels $D^0 \to K^-K^+\pi^-\pi^+$, $D^+ \to K^0_SK^+\pi^-\pi^+$, and $D^+_s \to K^0_SK^+\pi^-\pi^+$. The T violation asymmetry is obtained using triple-product correlations and assuming the validity of the CPT theorem. We find the asymmetry values to be $A_Tviol (D^0) = 0.010 \pm 0.057(stat.) \pm 0.037(syst.)$, $A_Tviol (D^+) = 0.023 \pm 0.062(stat.) \pm 0.022(syst.)$, and $A_Tviol (D^+_s) = -0.036 \pm 0.067(stat.) \pm 0.023(syst.)$. Each measurement is consistent with no T violation. New measurements of the CP asymmetries for some of these decay modes are also presented., Comment: 17 pages,6 figures,submitted to Phys.Lett.B

Abstract

Using data from the FOCUS experiment (FNAL–E831), we study the decay of Λ c + baryons into final states containing a Λ hyperon. The branching fractions of Λ c + into Λ π + , Λ π + π + π − and Λ K ¯ 0 K + relative to that into p K − π + are measured to be 0.217 ± 0.013 ± 0.020 , 0.508 ± 0.024 ± 0.024 and 0.142 ± 0.018 ± 0.022 , respectively. We also report new measurements of Γ ( Λ c + → Σ 0 π + ) Γ ( Λ c + → Λ π + ) = 1.09 ± 0.11 ± 0.19 , Γ ( Λ c + → Σ 0 π + π + π − ) Γ ( Λ c + → Λ π + π + π − ) = 0.26 ± 0.06 ± 0.09 and Γ ( Λ c + → Ξ ( 1690 ) 0 ( Λ K ¯ 0 ) K + ) Γ ( Λ c + → Λ K ¯ 0 K + ) = 0.32 ± 0.10 ± 0.04 . Further, an analysis of the subresonant structure for the Λ c + → Λ π + π + π − decay mode is presented.

Abstract

Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, the authors present a new measurement for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}. They measure: {Lambda}(D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -})/{Lambda}(D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}) = 0.0295 {+-} 0.0011 {+-} 0.0008. An amplitude analysis has been performed in order to determine the resonant substructure of this decay mode. The dominant components are the decays D{sup 0} {yields} K{sub 1}(1270){sup +} K{sup -}, D{sup 0} {yields} K{sub 1}(1400){sup +}K{sup -} and D{sup 0} {yields} {rho}(770){sup 0}{phi}(1020).

Abstract

Using data collected by the fixed target Fermilab experiment FOCUS, we present several first measurements for the semileptonic decay D0→K¯0π−μ+ν. Using a model that includes a K¯0π− s-wave component, we measure the form factor ratios to be rv=1.71±0.68±0.34 and r2=0.91±0.37±0.10 and the s-wave amplitude to be A=0.35±0.22±0.05GeV−1. Finally, we measure the vector semileptonic branching ratio Γ(D0→K*(892)−μ+ν)Γ(D0→K¯0π−π+)=0.337±0.034±0.013.

Abstract

Using data from the FOCUS experiment (FNAL-E831), we report on the decay of D 0 mesons into final states containing more than one K S 0 . We present evidence for two Cabibbo favored decay modes, D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K − π + and D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K + π − , and measure their combined branching fraction relative to D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − to be Γ ( D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K ± π ∓ ) Γ ( D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − ) = 0.0106 ± 0.0019 ± 0.0010 . Further, we report new measurements of Γ ( D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 ) Γ ( D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − ) = 0.0179 ± 0.0027 ± 0.0026 , Γ ( D 0 → K 0 K ¯ 0 ) Γ ( D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − ) = 0.0144 ± 0.0032 ± 0.0016 , and Γ ( D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 π + π − ) Γ ( D 0 → K ¯ 0 π + π − ) = 0.0208 ± 0.0035 ± 0.0021 where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract

We present a new measurement of the branching ratio of the Cabibbo suppressed decay D 0 → π − μ + ν relative to the Cabibbo favored decay D 0 → K − μ + ν and an improved measurement of the ratio | f + π ( 0 ) / f + K ( 0 ) | . Our results are 0.074 ± 0.008 ± 0.007 for the branching ratio and 0.85 ± 0.04 ± 0.04 ± 0.01 for the form factor ratio, respectively.

Abstract

Using a large sample of D 0 → K − μ + ν and D 0 → π − μ + ν decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements of the q 2 dependence for the f + ( q 2 ) form factor. These measured f + ( q 2 ) form factors are fit to common parameterizations such as the pole dominance form and compared to recent unquenched Lattice QCD calculations. We find m pole = 1.93 ± 0.05 ± 0.03 GeV / c 2 for D 0 → K − μ + ν and m pole = 1.91 −0.15 +0.30 ± 0.07 GeV / c 2 for D 0 → π − μ + ν and f − ( K ) ( 0 ) / f + ( K ) ( 0 ) = − 1.7 −1.4 +1.5 ± 0.3 .

Abstract

The ratio of cumulant to factorial moments of experimental multiplicity distributions has been calculated for $e^{+}e^{-}$ and $hh$ interactions in a wide range of energies. As a function of the rank it exhibits an initial steep decrease and a series of oscillations around zero. Those features cannot be reproduced by the Negative Binomial Distribution. A comparable behaviour is instead predicted in high-energy perturbative QCD. Abstract

Using a high statistics sample of photo-produced charm particles from the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab, we report on the measurement of the ratio of semileptonic rates Γ ( D + → K π μ + ν μ ) / Γ ( D + → K ¯ 0 μ + ν μ ) = 0.625 ± 0.045 ± 0.034 . Allowing for the Kπ S-wave interference measured in [J.M. Link, et al., FOCUS Collaboration, Phys. Lett. B 544 (2002) 89], we extract the vector to pseudoscalar ratio Γ ( D + → K ¯ * 0 μ + ν μ ) / Γ ( D + → K ¯ 0 μ + ν μ ) = 0.594 ± 0.043 ± 0.033 and the ratio Γ ( D + → K ¯ 0 μ + ν μ ) / Γ ( D + → K − π + π + ) = 1.019 ± 0.076 ± 0.065 . Our results show a lower ratio for Γ ( D → K * l ν ) / Γ ( D → K l ν ) than has been reported recently and indicate the current world average branching fractions for the decays D + → K ¯ 0 ( μ + , e + ) ν μ , e are low. Using the world average B ( D + → K − π + π + ) [K. Hagiwara, et al., Particle Data Group Collaboration, Phys. Rev. D 66 (2002) 010001, and 2003 partial update for edition 2004 ( http://pdg.lbl.gov )] we extract B ( D + → K ¯ 0 μ + ν ) = ( 9.27 ± 0.69 ± 0.59 ± 0.61 ) % .

Abstract

Using data from the FOCUS experiment we analyze the D+π− and D0π+ invariant mass distributions. We measure the D 2 ∗0 mass M D 2 ∗0 =(2464.5±1.1±1.9) MeV /c 2 and width Γ D 2 ∗0 =(38.7±5.3±2.9) MeV /c 2 , and the D 2 ∗+ mass M D 2 ∗+ =(2467.6±1.5±0.76) MeV /c 2 and width Γ D 2 ∗+ =(34.1±6.5±4.2) MeV /c 2 . We find evidence for broad structures over background in both the neutral and charged final state. If each is interpreted as evidence for a single L=1, jq=1/2 excited charm meson resonance, the masses and widths are M 1/2 0 =(2407±21±35) MeV /c 2 , Γ 1/2 0 =(240±55±59) MeV /c 2 , and M 1/2 + =(2403±14±35) MeV /c 2 , Γ 1/2 + =(283±24±34) MeV /c 2 , respectively.

Abstract

Using a large sample of D s + → φμ + ν decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements of two semileptonic form factor ratios: r v and r 2 . We find r v =1.549±0.250±0.148 and r 2 =0.713±0.202±0.284. These values are consistent with r v and r 2 form factors measured for the process D + → K ∗0 l + ν l .

Abstract

We report measurements of the charm-anticharm production asymmetries for $\Lambda_c^+$, $\Sigma_c^{++}$, $\Sigma_c^0$, $\Sigma_c^{++*}$, $\Sigma_c^{0*}$, and $\Lambda_c^+(2625)$ baryons from the Fermilab photoproduction experiment FOCUS (E831). These asymmetries are integrated over the region where the spectrometer has good acceptance. In addition, we have obtained results for the photoproduction asymmetries of the $\Lambda_c$ baryons as functions of $p_L$, $p_T^2$, and $x_F$. The integrated asymmetry for $\Lambda_c^+$ production, $(\sigma_{\Lambda_c^+} - \sigma_{\Lambda_c^-}) / (\sigma_{\Lambda_c^+} + \sigma_{\Lambda_c^-})$, is $0.111 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.012$, significantly different from zero. The asymmetries of the excited states are consistent with the $\Lambda_c$ asymmetry., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Studies of $D{\bar D}$ correlations for a large sample of events containing fully and partially reconstructed pairs of charmed $D$ mesons recorded by the Fermilab photoproduction experiment FOCUS (FNAL-E831) are presented. Correlations between $D$ and ${\bar D}$ mesons are used to study heavy quark production dynamics. We present results for fully and partially reconstructed charm pairs and comparisons to a recent version of \textsc{Pythia} with default parameter settings. Abstract

The FOCUS experiment(FNAL-E831) has used two channels, $\Omega^- \pi^+$ and $\Xi^-K^- \pi^+ \pi^+$,to measure the lifetime of the $\Omega_c^0$ charmed baryon. From a sample of $64 \pm 14$ signal events at a mass of 2.698 GeV/$c^2$, we measure an $\Omega_c^0$ lifetime of $72 \pm 11$ (stat.) $\pm 11$ (sys.) fs, substantially improving upon the current world average.

Abstract

Charged-particle multiplicity distributions from hadron-hadron collisions at $$\sqrt s $$ =16.7 GeV are analyzed in rapidity, pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle intervals. The data—fully reconstructed events—were taken in the rapid-cycling Bubble Chamber of the International Hybrid Spectrometer Consortium exposed to a hadron beam (147 GeV/c momentum) of the Tevatron at Fermilab. The factorial moments of the multiplicity distributions increase with decreasing rapidity interval. The energy dependence of the slopes in h-h collisions is discussed. Suitable phase-space cuts show that most of the intermittency effect stems from low-transverse-momentum particles. In the two-dimensional analysis (rapidity azimuthal angle) we find a weak enhancement of the slope values, more in agreement with the observations by the NA22 experiment, rather than the observations in e+e− by the HRS collaboration.

Using a large sample of charm semileptonic decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements of two semileptonic branching ratios. We obtain values of Γ(D + → K ∗0 μ + ν) Γ(D + →K − π + π + ) =0.602±0.010( stat )±0.021( sys ) and Γ(D s + →φμ + ν) Γ(D s + →φπ + ) =0.54±0.033( stat )±0.048( sys ) . Our D + → K ∗0 μ + ν result includes the effects of the s-wave interference discussed in Phys. Lett. B 535 (2002) 43.
