While much of work on homicide-suicide (HS) arises out of the USA and the UK, there is a paucity of research on HS outside of the Anglo-American sphere. This paper investigates HS in Hong Kong (HK), comparing the subtypes of filicide-suicide (FS) and mariticide/uxoricide-suicide (MUS) in that context as a means of testing the generalizability of past studies. Data from the HK Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government and the HK Police Force reports retrieved 156 cases from 2000 to 2019. In that timeframe, HS resulted in 261 deaths, with MUS being the most prevalent type of HS. Male offenders and female victims are more commonly seen. Offenders are generally older than their victims, and over half of offenders are married. FS and MUS display distinct characteristics in terms of offender and victim demographics, relationship dynamics, motives, and mode of killing. Depressed mothers tend to victimize their sons in FS as a means of saving their sons from a perceived miserable future, whereas male offenders aggress upon their female partners in MUS to alleviate their own frustrations, subsequently dying by suicide out of sorrow or a fear of consequence. MUS offenders are more hostile towards their victims and tend to kill with aggressive means, whereas FS offenders are more likely to kill with altruistic motives and with minimal force. These results match patterns of MUS and FS in the Anglo-American sphere, but with some important differences in terms of the use of guns and the presence of altruistic killing. Drawing on articles published in the Corriere della Sera, Il Popolo d'Italia and La Stampa, this study examines a case of uxoricide that occurred in 1923, focusing on the way in which the murderer and his lawyers were able to convince both the general public and the jury that the murderer's jealous nature was a mental illness, leading to him avoiding a prison sentence. The victim, the murderer's wife, was depicted as a physically attractive woman of dubious sexual reputation. Such characteristics were deemed to have triggered her husband's jealousy, thus rendering her culpable, the agent of her own homicide. In place of a picture of uxoricide in revenge for tarnished honour, the murderer portrayed himself as the powerless victim of love and jealousy. Through a close analysis of the strategy adopted by the defendant's lawyers, this article shows how centuries-old gendered stereotypes and ideas of respectability affected the law in action and permeated early twentieth-century Italian society. Analyser les enjeux cliniques et inconscients de l'uxoricide et proposer des pistes de réflexion pour les prises en charges thérapeutiques de ces patients, et pour le suivi des auteurs de violences conjugales, ce qui pourrait peut-être réduire le risque d'uxoricide. Revue de la littérature dans une perspective intégrative, s'appuyant sur des cadres de référence renvoyant respectivement à la psychiatrie, à la psychanalyse et aux théories de l'attachement et analyse de cas cliniques à partir d'entretiens cliniques avec des auteurs d'uxoricide. Les auteurs d'uxoricide (passage à l'acte survenant en dehors d'un contexte de décompensation psychotique, paranoïaque, ou toute autre décompensation rendant l'auteur irresponsable de ses actes) présentent une structure de personnalité limite, cherchant, après leur passage à l'acte, à se défendre d'une menace d'effondrement narcissique où leur amnésie ne vise qu'à les maintenir dans une sorte de déni protecteur, évitant de reconnaître à quel point leur partenaire est venue à leur insu, leur permettre de déployer toute leur dépendance dans un type de relation essentiellement anaclitique. L'uxoricide peut également être lié à une quête absolue de l'objet venant combler tout manque. L'ensemble des données recueillies suggère l'intérêt de prendre en considération les dimensions intrapsychiques dynamiques lors de la prise en charge et envisager, dans le cadre d'une recherche clinique plus quantitative, la comparaison d'un groupe d'auteurs d'uxoricide et d'un groupe de sujets auteurs de violences sans uxoricide. Les auteurs d'uxoricide ont pour caractéristiques communes, une angoisse de perte d'objet, un style d'attachement insécure, une fragilité des assises narcissiques et une objectivation de la partenaire. To analyze the clinical and unconscious stakes of uxoricide and to suggest reflections for the therapy of these patients, and for the therapy of perpetrators of domestic violence, which could perhaps reduce the risk of uxoricide. A literature review from an integrative perspective, based on frames of reference referring respectively to psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and attachment theory; an analysis of case studies, based on clinical interviews with uxoricide perpetrators. The perpetrators of uxoricide (an acting out occurring outside of a context of psychotic, paranoid decompensation, or any other decompensation making the author irresponsible for his acts) present a borderline personality structure, seeking, after their action, to defend themselves against the threat of narcissistic collapse, while their amnesia only aims to maintain them in a kind of protective denial, preventing them from recognizing how much their partner has, unwittingly, allowed them to express their tendency to dependence in an essentially anaclitic type of relationship. The uxoricide can also be linked to an absolute quest for the object that could compensate for any lack. All the data collected suggest the value of taking into account the dynamic intrapsychic dimensions during treatment and, in the context of more quantitative clinical research, the comparison of a group of perpetrators of uxoricide and a group of subjects who perpetrate violence without uxoricide. The common characteristics of the perpetrators of uxoricide are a separation anxiety disorder, an insecure attachment style, a fragile narcissistic foundation, and an objectification of the partner. In a therapeutic context, understanding more of these pathological narcissistic states seems important to our efforts to help these patients avoid repeat offending or suicide. In Ghana, wife sexual refusal is a key factor in uxoricides or husband-to-wife murders. Despite this, there is a dearth of systematic research that examines sexual strife as a precipitant of domestic violence and spousal murder. The present article addresses the current lack of research by systematically examining 25 cases of homicides and attempted homicides where wives were lethally and nonlethally assaulted by their husbands following the former's refusal to engage in husband-initiated sexual intercourse. A content analysis was conducted of all print and electronic media news items where a wife's refusal of sexual intercourse with a husband triggered lethal or aggravated violence. The results showed that the victims were aged 23 to 55 years old and were generally of low socioeconomic status. The assailants were aged 28 to 60 years old. Assailants used machetes, knives, and personal weapons to perpetrate the crimes, and extreme violence was a frequent feature of both lethal and nonlethal acts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

L'enfant traumatisé par un meurtre au sein du couple parental est exposé à une multitude de complications post-traumatiques spécifiques à la nature du traumatisme (PTSD, processus de deuil pathologique, troubles de l'attachement), et aspécifiques (troubles anxieux, troubles de l'humeur, troubles du sommeil, troubles du comportement, troubles psychosomatiques) ainsi qu'à des altérations du développement et des processus de structuration de la personnalité. Le traumatisme a par ailleurs un retentissement sur son état de santé physique et sur son niveau de fonctionnement global, scolaire et social. L'enfant témoin de féminicide dans un contexte de violences conjugales est à haut risque de complications post-traumatiques, si l'on fait l'hypothèse qu'il s'agit du traumatisme le plus grave qui soit pour un enfant. Ce traumatisme, par exposition à de la violence extrême, est sévère par son caractère interpersonnel et intentionnel, mais aussi et surtout, parce que non seulement la responsabilité émane d'un être humain contre un semblable, mais elle émane d'un parent contre l'autre parent. L'enfant va perdre brutalement ses deux figures d'attachement, sans « externalisation » possible de la responsabilité, et il ne pourra chercher de soutien auprès d'aucun de ses deux parents. Nous présentons dans l'article une grille d'évaluation de la situation clinique qui nous semble utile pour aider les professionnels qui seraient confrontés à cette rencontre particulière et rare avec ces enfants. Nous montrons également que l'évaluation de l'accompagnement professionnel (socio-éducatif, judiciaire et thérapeutique) fait partie intégrante de cette évaluation des facteurs de risque et des facteurs de protection (de résilience) pour l'évolution et le devenir à long terme de ces enfants. Children traumatized by a murder within the parental couple may develop a multitude of post-traumatic complications both specific to the nature of the traumatism (PTSD, pathological mourning process, attachment disorders) and nonspecific (anxiety disorders, disorders mood, sleep disorders, behavioral disorders, psychosomatic disorders) as well as alterations in the development and processes of personality structuring. The trauma also has an impact on physical health and on overall level of functioning, school and social. Children witnessing feminicide in a context of domestic violence are at high risk of post-traumatic complications, assuming that this is the most serious trauma for the child. This trauma, by exposure to extreme violence, is severe by its interpersonal and intentional character but also, and above all, because not only does responsibility come from one human being against another but it comes from one parent against the other parent. The child will suddenly lose his two attachments, without the possible "outsourcing" of responsibility and will be unable to seek support from either of the parents. We present a grid of evaluations of the clinical situation which we deem helpful for professionals who may be confronted with this particular and rare encounter with these children. We also show that evaluation of professional support (socioeducational, legal and therapeutic) is an integral part of this assessment of risk factors and protective factors (resilience) for evolution and long-term future of these children. Initié par l'Observatoire des violences envers les femmes de Seine-Saint-Denis et le parquet du tribunal de Bobigny, le protocole, dans sa partie thérapeutique, est le résultat d'une réflexion menée conjointement par le service de pédiatrie, de pédopsychiatrie et des urgences pédiatriques du centre hospitalier intercommunal Robert-Ballanger d'Aulnay-sous-Bois. S'appuyant sur une collaboration entre services de pédiatrie et de pédopsychiatrie et une unité de prise en charge du psycho-traumatisme de l'enfant au sein de la consultation de pédopsychiatrie, le centre hospitalier Robert-Ballanger a élaboré un protocole de prise en charge thérapeutique spécifique pour les enfants témoins de féminicide. Cet article présente l'organisation et les partenariats nécessaires entre les institutions concernées par l'accompagnement des enfants confrontés à une telle situation. Le parquet du tribunal de Bobigny et la police, le conseil departemental de Seine-Saint-Denis via l'Observatoire des violences faites aux femmes et l'aide sociale à l'enfance, le centre departemental de l'enfance et de la famille via le service d'intervention spécialisée, et le centre hospitalier Robert-Ballanger ont élaboré un protocole spécifique afin d'offrir les soins initiaux et les suivis thérapeutiques au long cours indispensables dans ces situations de psycho-traumatismes extrêmes. Initiated by the Seine-Saint-Denis Observatory of Violence against Women and the Prosecutor's Office of the Tribunal de Bobigny, the protocol in its therapeutic part, is the result of a joint study by the Departments of Pediatrics, of Child Psychiatry and of Pediatric Emergencies of the Robert-Ballanger Hospital Center. Based on a pre-existing collaboration between pediatric and child psychiatric services and the prior existence of a unit for the care of children witnessing domestic violence in the child psychiatry consultation, the Robert-Ballanger Hospital Center has developed a protocol of specific therapeutic management for children witnessing feminicide. This article presents the structure of the organization and the necessary partnerships between all the institutions involved in accompanying children exposed to such a situation. The Office of the Court of Bobigny and the Police, the Departmental Council of Seine-Saint-Denis via the Observatory of Violence against Women and the Child Welfare, the Departmental Center for Childhood and Family, and the Robert-Ballanger Hospital Center have developed a specific protocol in order to offer the initial care and long-term therapeutic follow-up necessary in these situations of extreme psycho-trauma. Despite abounding evidence for the harmful effects of synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroids, they are commonly misused for competitive and body-image reasons. Steroids are often used in the context of poly-drug misuse, which may mask their specific effects on behaviour, such as increasing aggression. We present our case report as a concrete example of current steroid-related substance-misuse trends. A 25-year old Finnish male with various psychiatric and drug-related symptomology, but almost no previous history of aggressive behaviour, battered his wife to death and mutilated her body after a five-week steroid regimen.

Background: While there is no doubt that parental intimate partner homicide is associated with strong grief and post-traumatic stress reactions among the children who have been bereaved, there is little in-depth insight into how children and young people see and describe their circumstances and needs. Objective: Our aim was to shed light on children’s and young people’s perspectives on their life after parental intimate partner homicide. In particular, we were interested in how they experienced their living arrangements, social environment, and general well-being. Method: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 23 children and young people (8–24 years old; 15 females and eight males) who had been younger than 18 years when one of their parents killed the other (21 children lost their mother, two children lost their father). We used thematic analysis to synthesize the findings. Results: While most participants were fairly content with themselves and their living arrangements, they also expressed substantial and persistent difficulties, including distress, conflicts between family members, and feelings of unsafety. Most importantly, children’s self-image, their perspectives on their biological parents, and their views on their broader (family) environment varied considerably from participant to participant, and also between siblings. Conclusions: It is unlikely that straightforward guidelines can be given with regard to where the children should live after parental homicide, or whether they should be in contact with the perpetrating parent. Rather, this study’s findings underline the need to explore children’s individual viewpoints carefully during decision-making processes.

Nous proposons, à travers cette communication, un panorama, certes non exhaustif mais significatif, d’une variante assez répandue du meurtre de l’épouse dans la littérature et le cinéma : la mort par noyade. Nous étudierons quelques cas exemplaires que nous ne tirons pas, bien évidemment, de la vie réelle mais d’un répertoire de textes et d’images (les films), pour en dégager des constantes, en plongeant (c’est le cas de le dire) dans le roman et dans les traditions cinématographiques italienne, française et anglo-saxonne. Depuis la première et incontournable jeune femme morte dans l’eau (Ophélie, même s’il s’agissait en l’occurrence d’une sorte de suicide inconscient dicté par la folie) jusqu’aux typologies les plus récentes, nous proposons un travelling – qui ne doit rien au hasard – sur d’authentiques “cas” littéraires et cinématographiques, au sens d’“affaires” policières. Et nous tenterons de répondre à une question : pourquoi, parmi tant de modus operandi possibles (bien que tout à fait déconseillés, est-il besoin de le préciser ?), choisit-on de tuer sa femme “par voie d’eau” ? Et peut-on vivre heureux ensuite ?

In the early middle ages the customary practice of killing wifes who did not conformed to the accepted norms (by breaking sexual code, plotting against her husband, practicing witchcraft), or were only suspected of doing it, was generally considered legal and tolerable, as testified the legal sources from different parts of Europe. During the 8th and 9th centuries growing influence of the Church on the matrimonial matters and the consolidation of the doctrine about spiritual nature of christian marriage and marital relations inclined the ecclesiastical authorities to make efforts to eradicate this sinful practice from social life. The different texts of this period cast light on the tension between traditional morality based on the „economy of honour” and christian teaching. This tension disturbed the stability of value systems of early medieval society. Writings of Hincmar of Reims dealing with the theory of christian marriage and the limits of husband’s authority over his wife (De coercendo ed exstirpando raptu viduarum, puellarum ac sanctimonialium; De divortio Lotharii regis et Theutbergae reginae) are here analysed in order to reveal that canonists and moralists of this period were aware of these conflicts, and tried to harmonize the contradictory norms. Such practices as mediation between the spouses, public penance and monastic exclusion of the adulterous wife can be considered as a model of the strategies proposed by ecclesiastical authorities to protect the woman’s life and at the same time to preserve honour of her husband. However, in spite of the Church condemnation of uxoricide and dissemination of the Christian concept of the marriage, the several cases from the narrative and diplomatic records from the 9th century clearly demonstrate that killing the wife in the name of family’s honour was not only the accepted tradition, but it was also considered as the moral obligation of the husband or his male relatives. The refusal to fulfill such obligation, even in the name of Christian principles, could be dangerous not only for the social position of the husband but also for his male identity.Nell’alto medioevo la pratica di uccidere la moglie che non rispettava le norme accettate (infrangendo il codice sessuale, complottando contro il marito, praticando la stregoneria) o che era semplicemente sospettata di farlo era in linea di massima considerato un atto lecito e tollerabile, come testimoniano le fonti giuridiche di molte regioni europee. Gli scritti di Incmaro di Reims che affrontano la teoria del matrimonio cristiano e i limiti dell’autorità del marito sulla moglie (De coercendo ed exstirpando raptu viduarum, puellarum ac sanctimonialium; De divortio Lotharii regis et Theutbergae reginae) sono qui analizzati per mostrare come i canonisti e i moralisti di questo periodo erano consapevoli di simili conflitti e cercavano di armonizzare le norme contrastanti. Pratiche come la mediazione tra i coniugi, le penitenze pubbliche e l’esclusione monastica della moglie adultera possono essere considerate come un modello delle strategie proposte dalle autorità ecclesiastiche per protegger la vita della donna e allo stesso tempo per salvare l’onore del marito. Tuttavia, nonostante la condanna dell’uxoricidio da parte della Chiesa e il diffondersi della nozione cristina di matrimonio, i numerosi casi che emergono dalle fonti narrative e diplomatiche del secolo IX dimostrano chiaramente che l’uccisione della moglie in nome dell’onore della famiglia non solo costituiva la tradizione accettata, ma era anche considerata come un obbligo morale del marito o dei suoi parenti maschi. Il rifiuto di adempiere a tale obbligo, anche in nome dei principi cristiani, poteva essere pericoloso non solo per la posizione sociale del marito ma anche della sua identità maschile.

When one parent kills the other, children are confronted with multiple losses, involving their attachment figures and their direct living environment. In these complex situations, potentially drastic decisions are made, for example, regarding new living arrangements and contact with the perpetrating parent. We aimed to synthesize the empirical literature on children's mental health and well-being after parental intimate partner homicide. A systematic search identified 17 relevant peer-reviewed articles (13 independent samples). We recorded the theoretical background, methodology, and sample characteristics of the studies, and extracted all child outcomes as well as potential risk and protective factors. Children's outcomes varied widely and included psychological, social, physical, and academic consequences (e.g., post-traumatic stress, attachment difficulties, weight and appetite changes, and drops in school grades). Potential risk and protective factors for children's outcomes included 10 categories of pre-, peri-, and post-homicide characteristics such as cultural background of the family, whether the child witnessed the homicide, and the level of conflict between the families of the victim and the perpetrator. Background: The loss of a parent due to intimate partner homicide has a major impact on children. Professionals involved have to make far-reaching decisions regarding placement, guardianship, mental health care and contact with the perpetrating parent, without an evidence base to guide these decisions. We introduce a study protocol to a) systematically describe the demographics, circumstances, mental health and wellbeing of children bereaved by intimate partner homicide and b) build a predictive model of factors associated with children's mental health and wellbeing after intimate partner homicide. Methods/Design: This study focuses on children bereaved by parental intimate partner homicide in the Netherlands over a period of 20 years (1993 - 2012). It involves an incidence study to identify all Dutch intimate partner homicide cases between 1993 and 2012 by which children have been bereaved; systematic case reviews to describe the demographics, circumstances and care trajectories of these children; and a mixed-methods study to assess mental health, wellbeing, and experiences regarding decisions made and care provided. Discussion: Clinical experience and initial research suggest that the children involved often need long-term intensive mental health and case management. The costs of these services are extensive and the stakes are high. This study lays the foundation for an international dataset and evidence-informed decision making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on a systematic review of empirical studies published between 2000 and 2011, it is identified homicide risk factors against women in the context of couple relationships, from 17 researches in USA, Australia, Spain, the UK and Netherlands. In particular, it is analyzes and discusses findings regarding to the risk factors from the focus of the perpetrator, the victim, the couple relationship and its context. Finally, it is concludes the need to identify and determinate specific risk factors for the Latin American context, discussing about the impact of public policies on violence against women and its influence on the level of life risk they experience. A common form of violence against women is sexual coercion on the part of their husbands/partners, the uncontrollable effects of which can lead to extreme consequences, as in the case of uxoricide examined in this report. It involved a 59-year-old female alcoholic, under observation on the part of social services as the possible victim of abuse by her husband, an amputee with a transtibial prosthesis. The woman had never admitted to her social workers that her husband was abusing her. One night, she was admitted to hospital in a state of hemorrhagic shock due to massive vaginal bleeding, but despite treatment, she died 20 min after arrival. The anatomical-pathological examination conducted by the hospital revealed serious genital lesions which warranted reporting the case to the Judicial Authorities, who arranged for a forensic autopsy. The cause of death was identified as acute meta-hemorrhagic anemia in a cirrhotic woman, secondary to a large, irregular vaginal lesion involving both the vaginal wall and the soft perivaginal tissues as well as the medium and small urogenital vascular branches. To identify the foreign body used to inflict this injury, a scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS) were used. This revealed tiny splinters of wood in the vaginal tissues examined. In addition to the genetic-forensic techniques used, this finding allowed the investigators to identify the husband's prosthetic limb as the instrument of sexual coercion. The report describes a particular case of marital rape that resulted in uxoricide, in which the overall concordance of the investigations carried out played a fundamental role in identifying the offending body and, consequently, the murderer. Previous studies of ancient Greek examples of uxoricide in pregnancy have concluded that the theme is used to suggest tyrannical abuse of power and that the violence is a product of the patriarchal nature of ancient society. This article uses evolutionary analyses of violence during pregnancy to argue that the themes of sexual jealousy and uncertainty over paternity are as crucial as the theme of power to an understanding of these examples and that the examples can be seen as typical instances of spousal abuse as it occurs in all types of society. Searching for "greener pastures," through education and skills learning, as well as escaping an increasingly failing Nigerian state, many Nigerian youth have moved to and acquired residency in Europe and especially United States and Canada. Approach: Whereas some, especially Nigerian males who arrived in the 1970s and 1980s and onwards married and settled down with spouses they met in their host countries, others were not so successful in their marriages or cohabitation with the locals, mostly White and African American women, as these marriages quickly broke down owing to cultural and values incompatibilities. With time rapidly passing and loneliness enveloping them, some have traveled to Nigeria, returning with the so-called "Fedexed" wives, several years, even decades younger. Again several of these often arranged marriages fail for several reasons, including patriarchy, conjugal conflicts and violence resulting in the men murdering their wives, some in gruesome and macabre ways. Results: This study applied the Intersectionality theory, predicated on patriarchy, culture, gender and power to evaluate some of the reasons for the marital tragedies, including the brutal murders of Nigerian women by their spouses in Nigerian families living in Europe, Canada and especially the United States. Conclusion: The study offered strategies for managing Nigerian and other Diasporic marriages, relationships and the attendant conflicts in such ways that Nigerians other ethnics who arrive in Europe and the Americas do not become statistics for such infamy as uxoricide (femicide) that ultimately draws long prison tenure or the lethal injection, while destroying their families forever. The male and female identities of the late colonial neo-hispanic period were juridically defined. This opposition involved men's superiority and women's subordination in an asymetric relationship inside a patriarcal order. The murder of a woman by her own husband – uxoricide - reveals a conflict of that doesn't put into question women's subordination but expresses each one's conception about his own rights and obligations as well as his partner's ones. The confrontation between men and women was negociated on both the fields of expression and action. This particular quarrel ended with the murder of the wife.

Abstract: Homicide is an extreme outcome of violence which is infrequent in older adults, with a prevalence ranging from 1% to 4%. In those cases, homicide is usually followed by suicide. Homicide appears in different psychopathology contexts: Mood disorder, alcohol disorder and psychosis disorder. An association of mild to moderate dementia with homicide has been reported. The risk factors of homicide in demented patients remain unknown. Dysexecutive syndrome could be a cause of homicide in demented patients. The reported case highlights this issue and shows that neuropsychiatric evaluation of older murderers could be useful in understanding the murder. Clinical and criminological characteristics of elderly murderers with a dementia will also be discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
