It is an emerging public health issue with limited improvement in management services. Mohs surgery, a renowned surgical procedure in the treatment of skin cancer, involves exact tumor excision along with horizontal frozen tissue examination. It is known to minimize the defect size and improve patient outcomes. Therefore, Mohs surgery is highly effective for almost all nonmelanoma skin cancers. Despite its proven potential, the implementation of Mohs surgery in Africa faces various limitations. This commentary seeks to provide insights into the current threats and opportunities surrounding the execution of Mohs surgery in African healthcare systems. The role of governments, healthcare professionals, and international organizations is also highlighted in this paper., Methods: A literature search was conducted by retrieving articles from PubMed and Google Scholar. Previous articles that discuss skin cancer, Mohs surgery, and cancer in Africa were analysed to understand the implementation aspects of Mohs surgery in Africa., Results: The implementation of Mohs surgery in Africa is very limited due to challenges such as inadequately trained healthcare professionals, costs associated with the surgery, and cultural beliefs and misconceptions. Nevertheless, telemedicine has been used in surgical consultations regarding the postoperative management of patients who undergo Mohs surgery., Conclusion: Despite advances in medicine, African dermatological health care remains underdeveloped. Introduction: Sleep disorders represent common complaints in different medical illnesses. They encompass a risk for diverse inflammatory, metabolic, and cardiovascular diseases. Sleep disorders include disorders of hypersomnolence, insomnia, parasomnias, sleep-related movement disorders, circadian rhythm sleep-wake-disorders, and sleep-related breathing disorders, each one of which was associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk in a different mechanism. In this review, the authors address the most recent research on the correlation between sleep and CVD., Methods: The literature on sleep disorders and their potential links to various cardiovascular diseases was reviewed in narrative form. For the published papers up to June 2023, the authors searched the databases of PubMed and Google Scholar. Pancreatic cancer is notorious for its persistently poor prognosis and health outcomes, so some of the questions that may be begged are "Why is it mostly diagnosed at end stage?", "What could we possibly do with the advancing technology in today's world to detect early pancreatic cancer and intervene?", and "Are there any implementation of the existing novel imaging technologies?". Well, to start with, this is in part because the majority of patients presented would already have reached a locally advanced or metastatic stage at the time of diagnosis due to its highly aggressive characteristics and lack of symptoms. Due to this striking disparity in survival, advancements in early detection and intervention are likely to significantly increase patients' survival. Presently, screening is frequently used in high-risk individuals in order to obtain an early pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Having a thorough understanding of the pathogenesis and risk factors of pancreatic cancer may enable us to identify individuals at high risk, diagnose the disease early, and begin treatment promptly. In this review, the authors outline the clinical hurdles to early pancreatic cancer detection, describe high-risk populations, and discuss current screening initiatives for high-risk individuals. Background TikTok is among the most popular social media sites, and its utilization for health information is growing each day. The present study assesses the popularity and quality of the top 100 most-liked videos on TikTok tagged with "#ichthyosis." This study aims to do so by assessing contributions from physician, and nonphysician sources (such as from patients) to guide healthcare professionals interested in leveraging this platform for public health.  Methodology A cross-sectional analysis of the top 100 most-liked videos tagged with "#ichythosis" on TikTok as of January 3, 2024, was conducted. The parameters assessed for this study include observable characteristics, content type, and whether the creator was a physician or nonphysician. The quality of the content was measured using the DISCERN scale.  Results Based on these results, 14 of the top 100 videos were posted by physicians with 1,912,975 as the mean number of views. There were 86 videos posted by nonphysician creators averaging 2,675,341 views. Videos posted by nonphysician creators had a higher average number of views, number of likes, and number of comments but less average saves. Videos made by physicians and educational content had the highest average DISCERN scores, whereas nonphysician, awareness, and personal experience content had the lowest average DISCERN scores.  Conclusions Physicians are deemed trustworthy, reliable sources of healthcare-related information on TikTok. Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has recently emerged as a novel and intriguing therapeutic strategy., Aim: This review paper aims to explore and elucidate the multifaceted role of gut microbiota in cardiovascular health. It will also address the prevailing challenges and limitations in gut microbiota studies, emphasizing the importance of future research in overcoming these obstacles to expand our understanding of the gut-heart axis., Materials and Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using various databases including ClinicalTrials, Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, and Ovid Resources. Hydrocephalus occurs when the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulates in the cerebral ventricles. This is due to either obstruction in the CSF flow, decreasing its absorption by the arachnoid villus to the Dural venous sinuses, or increasing production of the CSF. The most disproportionately and severely affected by the disease consequences are African children. This is because of the high incidence of postinfectious hydrocephalus and spinal dysraphism compared with other world children. The health care system in Africa has access to 488 neurosurgeons which represents less than 1% of the global neurosurgeons, thus pediatric hydrocephalus is considered an emerging public health problem in Africa because of the difficulty of the patient's access to proper care. Numerous studies conducted in Africa have revealed a significant imbalance in the distribution of neurosurgical resources across the continent. Specifically, South Africa and North Africa collectively account for 86% of the total practicing neurosurgeons, indicating a pronounced concentration of these specialized medical professionals in these regions. Epilepsy is the most widespread neurological disorder in Africa, affecting an estimated 25 million people. The disorder is characterized by recurrent seizures, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including past trauma, central nervous system infections, and genetic disorders. The major contributor to posttraumatic hydrocephalus (PTH) is traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), especially in individuals with occupations set in industrial settings. A variety of criteria have been employed for the diagnosis of PTH, including the combination of neurological symptoms like nerve deficits and headache, as well as an initial improvement followed by a worsened relapse of altered consciousness and neurological deterioration, which is detected by computed tomography-brain imaging that reveals gradual ventriculomegaly., Aim: In this article, we discuss and summarize briefly the current understandings and advancements in the management of PTH., Methods: The available literature for this review was searched on various bibliographic databases using an individually verified, prespecified approach. The level of evidence of the included studies was considered as per the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine recommendations., Results: The commonly practiced current treatment modality involves shunting CSF but is often associated with complications and recurrence. The lack of a definitive management strategy for PTH warrants the utilization of novel and innovative modalities such as stem cell transplantations and antioxidative stress therapies., Conclusion: One of the worst complications of a TBI is PTH, which has a high morbidity and mortality rate. Even though there hasn't been a successful method in stopping PTH from happening, hemorrhage-derived blood, and its metabolic by-products, like iron, hemoglobin, free radicals, thrombin, and red blood cells, may be potential targets for PTH hindrance and management. Meningitis, an inflammatory disease affecting the meningeal layers of the brain and the spinal cord, poses a significant public health concern globally. Most meningitis cases are caused by viral infections, bacterial infections being the second most common cause, while fungal or parasitic infections are deemed rare. Despite the decrease in bacterial meningitis because of vaccination and treatment, a recent meningitis outbreak in the United States and Mexico highlighted ongoing challenges. The current meningitis outbreak is caused by a pathogenic fungus and is associated with surgical procedures performed under spinal anaesthesia as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the 11 May of 2023. Around 20 cases with clinical suspicion of meningitis, including two fatalities, have been attributed to this rampant outbreak. Timely diagnosis, utilising diagnostic modalities such as lumbar puncture and pathogen detection methods, is crucial for appropriate management. Iatrogenic meningitis must be avoided by enhancing surveillance, infection control procedures, and adherence to aseptic practices. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that can present with motor and extra-motor manifestations. Its global prevalence is 4.42 per 1 000 000, and it has a high mortality rate. In sub-Saharan Africa alone, 15 per 100 000 develop ALS mainly between their 40s and 60s and only one-fourth of them have access to treatment. ALS was found to be not only affected by genetic variation but also by the patient's mood and lifestyle. In Africa, males and younger people tend to be affected with ALS and rarely present with bulbar onset. ALS diagnosis is very challenging due to the lack of ALS-specific biomarkers and the sharing of some clinical features with other syndromes. ALS treatment is mainly riluzole and supportive treatment via nasogastric tube and ventilatory support. The access to treatment in Africa is very limited, thus a very bad prognosis with a median survival time of 14 months post-diagnosis. Powassan virus (POWV) is a tick-borne Flavivirus primarily transmitted through ticks in North America which is a significant public health threat in the northeastern United States. POWV infection spans from Ontario to the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Midwest regions in the USA. Climate change, ecological factors, and human-related changes, including shifts in migration and agriculture, contribute to the dissemination of POWV. Symptoms include sore throat, fatigue, headache, and severe neuroinvasive conditions. Specialized attention is required for diagnosing and managing. MRI scans detect central nervous system abnormalities, while neuromonitoring identifies metabolic distress. Severe cases may necessitate ICU hospitalisation with continuous monitoring. Prevention measures, such as awareness, controlling mammals, and protecting pets, reduce POWV infection risk. The recent outbreak of POWV in Maine, USA, highlights the importance of worldwide collaboration for prevention. Introduction: SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, has brought a conglomerate of novel chronic disabling conditions described as 'Long COVID/Post-COVID-19 Syndrome'. Recent evidence suggests that the multifaceted nature of this syndrome results in both pulmonary and extrapulmonary sequelae,chronic dyspnoea, persistent fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction being the most common, debilitating symptoms. Several mechanisms engender or exacerbate cognitive impairment, including central nervous system and extra-central nervous system causes, although the exact mechanism remains unclear. Both hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients may suffer varying degrees of cognitive impairment, ranging from fatigue and brain fog to prolonged deficits in memory and attention, detrimental to the quality-of-life years post-recovery. The aim of this review is to understand the underlying mechanisms, associations, and attempts for prevention with early intervention of long-term cognitive impairment post-COVID-19., Methodology: A systematic search was conducted through multiple databases such as Medline, National Library of Medicine, Ovid, Scopus database to retrieve all the articles on the long-term sequalae of cognitive dysfunction after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The inclusion criteria included all articles pertinent to this specific topic and exclusion criteria subtracted studies pertaining to other aetiologies of cognitive dysfunction. This search was carefully screened for duplicates and the relevant information was extracted and analysed., Results/discussion: To date, the exact pathogenesis, and underlying mechanisms behind cognitive dysfunction in COVID-19, remain unclear, hindering the development of adequate management strategies. However, the proposed mechanisms suggested by various studies include direct damage to the blood-brain barrier, systemic inflammation, prolonged hypoxia, and extended intensive care admissions. However, no clear-cut guidelines for management are apparent., Conclusion: This review of the COVID-19 pandemic has elucidated a new global challenge which is affecting individuals' quality of life by inducing long-term impaired cognitive function. Background: Cancer is a significant threat to public health and a leading cause of morbidity across the globe. Of all cancers, brain cancer can be particularly catastrophic as treatment often fails to achieve the desired degree of effectiveness and diagnosis remains associated with a high mortality rate. Africa, as a continent with resource-limited countries, needs to allocate the necessary proper healthcare infrastructure to significantly reduce cancer rates and improve patient survival. In addition, the relative paucity of data within this field in Africa makes effective management a challenge., Objective: This review is aimed at elucidating the currently available evidence base with regard to the epidemiology and etiology of brain cancer within resource-limited African countries. This review hopes to bring to the attention of the wider clinical community the growing burden of brain cancer within Africa and to encourage future research into this field of research., Methods: The available literature for this Systematic Review was searched on two bibliographic databases, PubMed and Scopus, using an individually verified, prespecified approach. In addition, the Global Cancer Observatory and Global Burden of Disease databases were also utilized. Studies reporting on the epidemiology, etiology, and impact of brain cancer in Africa were suitable for inclusion. The level of evidence of the included studies was considered as per the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine recommendations., Results: Out of the four databases searched, 3848 articles were initially screened rigorously, filtered into 54 articles, and finally assessed qualitatively and quantitatively. We have demonstrated a poor survival rate and lack of proper funds/resources necessary to report, identify, and treat cases, as well as the dearth of comprehensive research on the subject of brain cancer that has become a challenging healthcare concern in many African developing nations. Also, because of the gradual improvement in healthcare facilities and the increasing population within many countries in Africa, the number of patients with central nervous system and intracranial tumors is rising specifically in the elder population. In addition, the population in West Africa is at a higher risk of HIV-related malignancies due to the high prevalence of HIV in West Africa. The burden of brain cancer in Africa is increasing in comparison with the developed parts of the world in which it is decreasing. Moreover, the mismanagement of cancers in Africa leads to higher morbidity and mortality and decreased quality of life., Conclusion: This study addresses the burden of brain cancer as a major public health crisis in Africa. Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) has been alerted to a concerning upsurge of severe myocarditis, an inflammatory heart condition, in neonates within Wales and South West England. The myocarditis cases are being intricately associated with enterovirus infection, belonging to the Picornaviridae family. The concerned pathogen poses a significant global disease burden, with an estimated 10 to 15 million symptomatic cases occurring annually in the United States alone. Neonates are particularly vulnerable with children under the age of one accounting for approximately 40% of enterovirus infections., Material and Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using various databases including ClinicalTrials, Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, and Ovid Resources. The search strategy included utilizing keywords such as "myocarditis," "Randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Only articles written in English were considered, and selection criteria included relevance to the research objectives, reasonable sample sizes, and robust methodology. In addition to the identified articles, meta-analyses, animal models and studies, and references from the selected articles were also examined to ensure a comprehensive review of the literature., Results: Ten hospitalized neonates, reported in the United Kingdom (UK), with positive PCR tests were reported to have myocarditis, predominantly caused by coxsackieviruses. Background/introduction: On the 13th of December 2022, a 5-year-old girl from Karnataka, India, tested positive for Zika virus. The first Zika virus was isolated from the serum of a rhesus monkey in the Zika Forest of Uganda in 1947. Zika virus was largely dormant for about 70 years before suddenly resurfacing across all of America, from Brazil to the Pacific Islands and is connected to a grouping of microcephaly phenotypes based on a complete virus genome analysis. All of the aforementioned research provides an overview of the migration of this virus from the Americas to continental Africa via mosquitoes. The current study, therefore, aims to evaluate the virologic characteristics, prophylaxis, transmitting mechanisms, diagnosis, clinical manifestations, and treatment of ZIKV infection in light of the virus's widespread dissemination and deadly nature., Aim: The investigation's findings aim to demonstrate that in order to prevent further outbreaks, there is a national requirement for active epidemiological and entomological observation of Zika., Materials and Methods: Data were extracted from academic journals of medicine published in MEDLINE, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Ovid, and Embase inventory databases with a predetermined search strategy. On 21 March 2023 the Tanzania's Ministry of Health reported the first Marburg virus disease (MVD) outbreak in Bukoba District reporting a total of eight cases and five fatalities including one health care worker with a case fatality ratio of 62.5%. MVD is a filoviral infection with an estimated incubation of 3-21 days and causes severe hemorrhagic fever in humans. Fruit bats are significant reservoir host leading to animal-to-human transmission and human-to-human transmission by direct contact of body fluids from an infected person. Symptoms and signs include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, body malaise, massive hemorrhage, and multiorgan failure. Currently, no definitive treatment or licensed vaccines are available to date but only supportive care. This outbreak is an alarming concern to the neighboring countries to contain the outbreak. Within 3 years from 2020 to 2023 Tanzania has already recorded one pandemic, which is the novel coronavirus disease 2019 and two epidemics, which are Cholera, Dengue, and now MVD. Tanzanian's Ministry of Health is drawing lessons from the previous health emergencies to contain this particular epidemic. The Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), transmitted via mosquitoes, exhibits clinical manifestations ranging from headaches, myalgia and arthralgia to debilitating systemic malfunctions. Endemic to Africa, CHIKV has seen an increase in cases since it was first recorded in 1950. There has recently been an outbreak in numerous African nations. The authors aim to review the history and epidemiology of CHIKV in Africa, current outbreaks, strategies adopted by governments and/or international organisations to mitigate such an outbreak, and future recommendations that can be employed., Methodology: Data were collected from medical journals published on Pubmed and Google Scholar, and from the official World Health Organisation, African and United States of America's Centres for Disease Control and Prevention websites. All articles considering CHIKV in Africa, including epidemiology, aetiology, prevention and management, were sought after., Results: Since 2015, the number of Chikungunya cases in Africa has increased, reaching the highest values ever recorded, especially in 2018 and 2019. Even though numerous vaccination and therapeutic intervention trials are still ongoing, no advancement has been made so far, including drug approval. Current management is supportive, with preventative measures, such as insecticides, repellents, mosquito nets and habitat avoidance, paramount to halting disease spread., Conclusion: In light of the recent CHIKV outbreak in Africa, local and global attempts are re-emerging to mitigate the eruption of the case of the lack of vaccines and antivirals, controlling the virus may be an arduous feat. Cholera outbreaks cause significant disease burden, especially in developing countries. While the disease is largely eliminated in developed countries, it still remains a huge burden to Sub-Saharan Africa. Lack of access to clean water, hygiene and sanitation facilities remains a huge risk factor for disease transmission and persistence. These outbreaks in Africa are usually associated with high case fatality rates. While many risk factors exist for the spread of the disease, climate change poses a huge challenge to the fight and spread of the disease. Most countries in southern Africa including Malawi and Mozambique have been experiencing the direct and indirect impact of climate change. Climate change can affect the epidemiological dynamics of multiple infectious agents, including vector-borne, water-borne, and food-borne pathogens. The aftermaths effects of flooding and droughts can largely be felt in seasonality changes in the spread of Cholera. In the wake of the unprecedented health crisis triggered by the global COVID-19 pandemic, countries are still grappling with the pandemic's immediate health and socioeconomic consequences. This paper presents an extended SEIRD model with vaccination to study the evolution of COVID-19 in South Africa and Tunisia since the commencement of the vaccination campaign in each country, respectively. Epidemiologists often quantify a risk reduction following the implementation of non-pharmaceutical containment measures and vaccines when attempting to stem the spread of pandemics. However, an important question they often ask is the effectiveness of the non-pharmaceutical containment measures (social distancing and lockdowns) and the efficacy of such measures, including vaccines. Africa's COVID-19 vaccine roll-out stands at 16% as of April 2022; however, the continent lags behind many developing countries even though it harbours about 16% of the world population. While proliferating literature quantifies the efficacy and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, very little has been done using the SEIRDV model in African countries. This study compares the model-predicted results with the available data to estimate the dynamics of the infected population, using data from 20-03-2021 to 30-12-2021. A simulation of the SEIRDV model is performed and fitted to the data. Simulating the model involves solving a system of Ordinary Differential Equations numerically by taking the initial values for the key model parameters as inputs. After simulating the SEIRDV model, the model parameters are compared with real-world COVID-19 and vaccination data in order to estimate the values of the different parameters that best fit the observed data. The results of the study showed an inverted U-shaped trend for the infection rate after vaccination, indicating that increasing the vaccination rates reduces the transmission rates. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited haematological disorders, which affects the shape of the oxygen-carrying haemoglobin component of erythrocytes, giving it an abnormal sickle-shaped appearance. This disease is one of the most common haematological disorders in Nigeria and is generally characterized by anaemia, painful crises, and multi-organ dysfunction. Recurrent episodes of painful crises account for most of the morbidities and mortalities observed in SCD, particularly sickle cell anaemia. This has been a critical concern in the field of haematology and molecular genetics as several therapeutic solutions have been explored over the past few years to treat symptoms of this disease and alleviate painful crises. However, most of these treatment options are not readily available and affordable to affected patients in lower socioeconomic settings in Nigeria, causing a wider range of complications and end-stage organ failure. Universal health coverage (UHC) is aimed at ensuring that individuals and communities have affordable access to essential health care services without facing financial hardship. Achieving UHC and the third sustainable development goal of the United Nations requires that health systems transition from a vertical, top-down, curative approach toward one that puts people at the core of health care services, such as community-centered health interventions. Nigeria operates a decentralized health care system with the least focus on primary health care, making access to quality, and affordable health care for several citizens a challenge as the major percentage of the Nigerian population relies on primary health care services. The limited number of health care workers, the poor economic state, the inadequate health financing structures and high illiteracy rates have led to challenges such as low health service availability, hesitancy to utilize health interventions, high out-of-pocket expenditure rates, and health misinformation. These can be effectively tackled at the community level by revamping primary health care services, adequate and sustainable health financing, establishing Ward Development Committees, and the involvement of community stakeholders in health policy implementation. Cholera is a highly contagious illness that can cause severe, acute, watery diarrhea. The WHO and the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced on the 10 October 2022 the re-emergence of Cholera in Lebanon. Data was collected from the Ministry of Public Health in Lebanon, the WHO, news announcements, as well as from online databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, news, conferences, and press releases on the current cholera outbreak. More than 669 confirmed cholera cases and 23 deaths have been reported in Lebanon up until 29 December 2022. The Ministry of Public Health is providing cooperation and support in containing the disease and covering the hospital and treatment expenses for cholera patients. The recently detected virus in eastern China in 2018 led to some health concerns, especially with the global trend of spreading viruses. As a new RNA-detected genus of the henipavirus family was found in Eastern China, the number of patients affected has reached 35 through zoonotic spread, with symptoms ranging from simple fever to fatal affection of vital organs such as the brain, liver, and kidneys. Researchers have found that shrew animals might be a potential reservoir for the Langya virus; however, data is still limited regarding human-to-human transmission. Current efforts by the Chinese Health Ministry and the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to deduct the spread of the virus and track its origin by trying to sequence the disease genome are evident. With all this in mind, the recommendation to face this new novel virus revolves around protecting the most vulnerable population at risk of being infected, such as farmers, and preventing the spread of the virus. Typhoid fever, a classical disease of enteric origin caused by Salmonella species of bacteria, is among the most important diseases threatening public health in Africa. The African continent is a marker for both low resources within the healthcare system and poor disease control policy formulations in managing endemic infectious diseases. Since the colonial era, the Widal serological test has been used to confirm typhoid fever in Africa, however recent studies recommend blood culture, and when blood culture cannot be obtained, clinical findings, laboratory Widal test confirmation, and ruling out other febrile illnesses as confirmatory pathway to diagnose typhoid fever in Africa. Managing typhoid fever relies on antimicrobials. In 1980s chloramphenicol was the medication of choice. Years later, amoxicillin and co-trimoxazole were adopted. However, the instantaneous rise of resistant strains of Salmonella enterica confers an important challenge to treat the burdensome enteric fever. The current treatment algorithm of typhoid fever in Africa relies significantly on the use of fluoroquinolones, macrolides, and cephalosporins. Developed nations have successfully addressed and controlled typhoid fever via improvement in accessing safe water and food, better sanitary and hygienic behaviours, and vaccines development. Nevertheless, there is significant evidence to infer improvement in the diagnosis management of typhoid fever over the last few decades, and efforts are underway to control the disease spread in Africa.
