Photoneutron reactions on $^{208}$Pb in the Giant Dipole Resonance energy region have been investigated at the $\gamma$-ray beam line of the NewSUBARU facility in Japan. The measurements made use of quasi-monochromatic laser Compton backscattering $\gamma$-ray beams in a broad energy range, from the neutron threshold up to 38 MeV, and of a flat-efficiency moderated $^3$He neutron detection system along with associated neutron-multiplicity sorting methods. We report absolute cross sections and mean photoneutron energies for the $^{208}$Pb$(\gamma,\,inX)$ reactions with $i$~=~1 to 4. The fine structure present in the $^{208}$Pb$(\gamma,\,n)$ cross sections at incident energies lower than 13~MeV has been observed. The photoabsorption cross section has been obtained as the sum of the $(\gamma,\,inX)$ reaction cross sections. By reproducing the measured ring-ratio values at excitation energies below the two neutron separation energy, we were able to extract estimations on the $^{208}$Pb$(\gamma,\,n)$ photoneutron energy spectra and on the partial photoneutron cross sections for leaving the residual $^{207}$Pb in its ground and first two excited states. The present results are compared with data from the literature and statistical model calculations.

New measurements of photofission and photoneutron reactions on $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th in the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) energy region have been performed at the laser Compton-scattering $\gamma$-ray source of the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility using a high-and-flat efficiency moderated $^3$He detection array. The neutron-multiplicity sorting of high-multiplicity fission neutron coincidence events has been performed using a dedicated energy dependent, multiple firing statistical treatment. The photoneutron $(\gamma,\,in)$ with $i$~=~1~--~3 and photofission $(\gamma,\,F)$ reactions have been discriminated by considering a Gaussian distribution of prompt-fission-neutron (PFN) multiplicities predicted by the theory of evaporation in sequential neutron emission from excited fission fragments. We report experimental $(\gamma,\,n)$, $(\gamma,\,2n)$, $(\gamma,\,3n)$ and $(\gamma,\,F)$ cross sections, average energies of PFNs and of $(\gamma,\,in)$ photoneutrons, as well as the mean number of PFNs per fission act and the width of the PFNs multiplicity distribution. Based on these primary experimental results and combined with reasonable assumptions, we extract also the first- and second-chance fission contributions. The new experimental results are compared with statistical-model calculations performed with the EMPIRE-3.2 Malta and TALYS-1.964 codes on the present data and with prompt fission emission calculations obtained with the Los Alamos model in the frame of the most probable fragmentation approach with and without sequential emission.

We simultaneously measured the $^4$He($\gamma, n$)$^3$He and $^4$He($\gamma, p$)$^3$H reactions in the energy range around the giant dipole resonance. A quasi-monoenergetic photon beam produced via the laser Compton scattering technique was irradiated on the active-target time-projection chamber filled with helium gas, and trajectories of charged decay particles emitted from $^4$He were measured. Our data suggest that the $^4$He($\gamma, n$)$^3$He and $^4$He($\gamma, p$)$^3$H cross sections peak around 26 MeV. This result contradicts the previous experimental data reported by Shima et al. but is consistent with other experimental results., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Photoneutron emission cross sections were measured for $^{13}$C below $2n$ threshold using quasi-monochromatic $\gamma$-ray beams produced in laser Compton-scattering at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. The data show fine structures in the low-energy tail of the giant-dipole resonance; the integrated strength of the fine structure below 18~MeV is intermediate among the past measurements with bremsstrahlung and the positron annihilation $\gamma$ rays. We compare the photoneutron emission data with the {\sf TALYS} statistical model calculation implemented with the simple modified Lorentzian model of $E1$ and $M1$ strengths. We also compare the total photoabsorption cross sections for $^{13}$C with the shell model and antisymmetrized molecular dynamics calculations as well as the statistical model calculation. We further investigate the consistency between the present photoneutron emission and the reverse $^{12}$C(n,$\gamma$) cross sections through their corresponding astrophysical rate.

In this work, we present new data on the $^{182,183,184}$W($\gamma,n$) cross sections, utilizing a quasi-monochromatic photon beam produced at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. Further, we have extracted the nuclear level density and $\gamma$-ray strength function of $^{186}$W from data on the $^{186}$W($\alpha,\alpha^\prime\gamma$)$^{186}$W reaction measured at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory. Combining previous measurements on the $^{186}$W($\gamma,n$) cross section with our new $^{182,183,184}$W($\gamma,n$) and ($\alpha,\alpha^\prime\gamma$)$^{186}$W data sets, we have deduced the $^{186}$W $\gamma$-ray strength function in the range of $1 < E_\gamma < 6$ MeV and $7 < E_\gamma < 14$ MeV. Our data are used to extract the level density and $\gamma$-ray strength functions needed as input to the nuclear-reaction code \textsf{TALYS}, providing an indirect, experimental constraint for the $^{185}$W($n,\gamma$)$^{186}$W cross section and reaction rate. Compared to the recommended Maxwellian-averaged cross section (MACS) in the KADoNiS-1.0 data base, our results are on average lower for the relevant energy range $k_B T \in [5,100]$ keV, and we provide a smaller uncertainty for the MACS. The theoretical values of Bao \textit{et al.} and the cross section experimentally constrained on photoneutron data of Sonnabend \textit{et al.} are significantly higher than our result. The lower value by Mohr \textit{et al.} is in very good agreement with our deduced MACS. Our new results could have implications for the $s$-process and in particular the predicted $s$-process production of $^{186,187}$Os nuclei., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures; to be submitted to Phys. Photo-nuclear reactions of light nuclei below a mass of $A=60$ are studied experimentally and theoretically by the PANDORA (Photo-Absorption of Nuclei and Decay Observation for Reactions in Astrophysics) project. Two experimental methods, virtual-photon excitation by proton scattering and real-photo absorption by a high-brilliance gamma-ray beam produced by laser Compton scattering, will be applied to measure the photo-absorption cross sections and the decay branching ratio of each decay channel as a function of the photon energy. Several nuclear models, e.g. anti-symmetrized molecular dynamics, mean-field type models, a large-scale shell model, and ab initio models, will be employed to predict the photo-nuclear reactions. The uncertainty in the model predictions will be evaluated from the discrepancies between the model predictions and the experimental data. The data and the predictions will be implemented in a general reaction calculation code TALYS . The results will be applied to the simulation of the photo-disintegration process of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in inter-galactic propagation.

We propose two types of neutron-$\gamma_1$-$\gamma_2$ triple coincidence detectors (not constructed) to chase gamma transitions to produce p-nuclei following the neutron emission in the $(\gamma, n)$ reaction. Neutrons are detected with 24 $^3$He counters embedded in a polyethylene moderator in Type I detector and with 6 liquid scintillation detectors in Type II detector, respectively. $\gamma$ rays are detected with two high-purity germanium detectors and four LaBr$_3$(Ce) detectors. The detector which is referred to as p-process chaser detector is used to search for mediating states in $^{180}$Ta through which the isomeric and ground states in $^{180}$Ta are thermalized in the p-process. A search is made for both resonant states and unresolved states in high nuclear-level-density domain.

Photon strength functions describing the average response of the nucleus to an electromagnetic probe are key input information in the theoretical modelling of nuclear reactions. Consequently they are important for a wide range of fields such as nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, medical isotope production, fission and fusion reactor technologies. They are also sources of information for widely used reaction libraries such as the IAEA Reference Input Parameter Library and evaluated data files such as EGAF. In the past two decades, the amount of reaction gamma-ray data measured to determine photon strength functions has grown rapidly. Different experimental techniques have led to discrepant results and users are faced with the dilemma which (if any) of the divergent data to adopt. We report on a coordinated effort to compile and assess the existing experimental data on photon strength functions from the giant dipole resonance region to energies below the neutron separation energy. The assessment of the discrepant data at energies around or below the neutron separation energy has been possible only in a few cases where adequate information on the model-dependent analysis and estimation of uncertainties was available. In the giant dipole resonance region, we adopt the recommendations of the new IAEA photonuclear data library. We also present global empirical and semi-microscopic models that describe the photon strength functions in the entire energy region and reproduce reasonably well most of the experimental data. Photo-induced reaction cross section data are of importance for a variety of current or emerging applications, such as radiation shielding design and radiation transport analyses, calculations of absorbed dose in the human body during radiotherapy, physics and technology of fission reactors (influence of photo-reactions on neutron balance) and fusion reactors (plasma diagnostics and shielding), activation analyses, safeguards and inspection technologies, nuclear waste transmutation, medical isotope production and astrophysical applications. Since the release of the IAEA Photonuclear Data Library in 1999 however, new experimental data as well as new methods to assess the reliability of experimental cross sections have become available. Theoretical models and input parameters used to evaluate photo-induced reactions have improved significantly over the years. In addition, new measurements of partial photoneutron cross sections using mono-energetic photon beams and advanced neutron detection systems have been performed allowing for the validation of the evaluations and assessments of the experimental data. Furthermore, technological advances have led to the construction of new and more powerful gamma-beam facilities, therefore new data needs are emerging. We report our coordinated efforts to address these data needs and present the results of the new evaluations of more than 200 nuclides included in the new updated IAEA Photonuclear Data Library, where the photon energy goes up to 200 MeV. We discuss the new assessment method and make recommendations to the user community in cases where the experimental data are discrepant and the assessments disagree. In addition, in the absence of experimental data, we present model predictions for photo-induced reaction cross section on nuclides of potential interest to medical radioisotope production.

Photoneutron cross sections were measured for $^{137}$Ba and $^{138}$Ba at energies below two-neutron threshold using quasi-monochromatic $\gamma$-ray beams produced in laser Compton-scattering at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. The photoneutron data are used to constrain the $\gamma$-ray strength function on the basis of the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov plus quasi-particle random phase approximation using the Gogny D1M interaction. Supplementing the experimentally constrained $\gamma$-ray strength function with the zero-limit E1 and M1 contributions which are unique to the deexcitation mode, we discuss radiative neutron capture cross sections relevant to the s-process nucleosynthesis of barium isotopes in the vicinity of the neutron magic number 82., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1811.00291, arXiv:1804.07654

Photoneutron cross sections were measured for $^{203}$Tl and $^{205}$Tl at energies between the one- and two-neutron thresholds using quasi-monochromatic $\gamma$-ray beams produced in laser Compton-scattering at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. Our new measurement results in cross sections significantly different from the previously reported bremsstrahlung experiment, leading to rather different GDR parameters, in particular to lower GDR peak energies and higher peak cross sections. The photoneutron data are used to constrain the $\gamma$-ray strength function on the basis of the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov plus quasi-particle random phase approximation using the Gogny D1M interaction. Supplementing the experimentally constrained $\gamma$-ray strength function with the zero-limit E1 and M1 contributions for the de-excitation mode, we estimate the Maxwellian-averaged cross section for the s-process branching-point nucleus $^{204}$Tl in the context of the $^{205}$Pb - $^{205}$Tl chronometry., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, to be submitted to PRC

Photoneutron cross sections were measured for $^{58}$Ni, $^{60}$Ni, $^{61}$Ni, and $^{64}$Ni at energies between the one-neutron and two-neutron thresholds using quasi-monochromatic $\gamma$-ray beams produced in laser Compton-scattering at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. The new photoneutron data are used to extract the $\gamma$-ray strength function above the neutron threshold complementing the information obtained by the Oslo method below the threshold. We discuss radiative neutron capture cross sections and the Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for Ni isotopes including $^{63}$Ni, a branching point nucleus along the weak s-process path. The cross sections are calculated with the experimentally constrained $\gamma$-ray strength functions from the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov plus quasi-particle-random phase approximation based on the Gogny D1M interaction for both $E1$ and $M1$ components and supplemented with the $M1$ upbend., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, re-submitted to PRC

In this work, we present new data on the $^{89}$Y($\gamma$,n) cross section studied with a quasi-monochromatic photon beam produced at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility in Japan contributing torwards resolving a long standing discrepancy between existing measurements of this cross section. Results for $\gamma$-ray strength function below threshold obtained by applying the Oslo method to $^{89}$Y($p,p'\gamma$)$^{89}$Y coincidences combined with the $^{89}$Y($\gamma$,n) data this providing experimental data for the $\gamma$-ray strength function of $^{89}$Y for $\gamma$ energies in the range of $\approx 1.6$ Mev to $\approx$ 20 MeV. A low-energy enhancement is seen for $\gamma$-rays below $\approx 2.5$ MeV. Shell-model calculations indicate that this feature is caused by strong, low-energy $M1$ transitions at high excitation energies. The nuclear level density and $\gamma$-ray strength function have been extracted from $^{89}$Y($d,p \gamma$)$^{90}$Y coincidences using the Oslo method. Using the ($\gamma,n$) and ($d,p\gamma$) data as experimental constraints, we have calculated the $^{89}$Y($n,\gamma$)$^{90}$Y cross section with the TALYS reaction code. Our results have been compared with directly measured (n,$\gamma$) cross sections and evaluations. The $N=50$ isotope $^{89}$Y is an important bottleneck in the s-process and the magnitude of the $^{89}$Y(n,$\gamma)$ cross section is key to understanding how s-process stars produce heavy isotopes., Comment: 18 pages (including references) and 16 figures, to be submitted to PRC

Nuclear level densities and $\gamma$-ray strength functions have been extracted for $^{59, 60}\rm{Ni}$, using the Oslo method on data sets from the $^{60}$Ni($^{3}$He,$^{3}$He$^{\prime}\gamma$)$^{60}$Ni and $^{60}$Ni($^{3}$He,$\alpha\gamma$)$^{59}$Ni reactions. Above the neutron separation energy, S$_n$, we have measured the $\gamma$-ray strength functions for $^{61}$Ni and $^{60}$Ni in photoneutron experiments. The low-energy part of the $^{59,60}$Ni $\gamma$-ray strength functions show an increase for decreasing $\gamma$ energies. The experimental $\gamma$-ray strength functions are compared with $M1$ $\gamma$-ray strength functions calculated within the shell model. The $E1$ $\gamma$-ray strength function of $^{60}$Ni has been calculated using the QTBA framework. The QTBA calculations describe the data above $E_{\gamma}\approx$ 7 MeV, while the shell-model calculations agree qualitatively with the low energy part of the $\gamma$-ray strength function. Hence, we give a plausible explanation of the observed shape of the $\gamma$-decay strength.

The photo-neutron cross sections of $^{162,163}\rm{Dy}$ have been measured for the first time in an energy region from the neutron threshold ($S_n$) up to $\approx$ $13$~MeV. The ($\gamma$,n) reaction was induced with quasi-monochromatic laser Compton-scattered $\gamma$ rays, produced at the NewSUBARU laboratory. The corresponding $\gamma$-ray strength functions ($\gamma$SF) have been calculated from the photo-neutron cross sections. The data are compared to reanalyzed $\gamma$SFs of $^{160-164}\rm{Dy}$, which are measured below $S_n$. The excellent agreement with the photo-neutron data at $S_n$ confirms the principle of detailed balance. Thus, a complete $\gamma$SF is established covering in total the energy region of 1 MeV $\leq$ E$_{\gamma}$ $\leq$ 13 MeV. These mid-shell well-deformed dysprosium isotopes all show scissors resonances with very similar structures. We find that our data predict the same integrated scissors strength as ($\gamma,\gamma^\prime$) data when integrated over the same energy range, which shows that the scissors mode very likely is consistent with the generalized Brink hypothesis. Finally, using the $\gamma$SFs as input in the reaction code TALYS, we have deduced radiative neutron-capture cross sections and compared them to direct measurements. We find a very good agreement within the uncertainties, which gives further support to the experimentally determined $\gamma$SFs.

Nuclear level densities (NLDs) and $\gamma$-ray strength functions ($\gamma$SFs) have been extracted from particle-$\gamma$ coincidences of the $^{92}$Zr($p,p' \gamma$)$^{92}$Zr and $^{92}$Zr($p,d \gamma$)$^{91}$Zr reactions using the Oslo method. The new $^{91,92}$Zr $\gamma$SF data, combined with photonuclear cross sections, cover the whole energy range from $E_{\gamma} \approx 1.5$~MeV up to the giant dipole resonance at $E_{\gamma} \approx 17$~MeV. The wide-range $\gamma$SF data display structures at $E_{\gamma} \approx 9.5$~MeV, compatible with a superposition of the spin-flip $M1$ resonance and a pygmy $E1$ resonance. Furthermore, the $\gamma$SF shows a minimum at $E_{\gamma} \approx 2-3$~MeV and an increase at lower $\gamma$-ray energies. The experimentally constrained NLDs and $\gamma$SFs are shown to reproduce known ($n, \gamma$) and Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for $^{91,92}$Zr using the {\sf TALYS} reaction code, thus serving as a benchmark for this indirect method of estimating ($n, \gamma$) cross sections for Zr isotopes., Comment: 10 pages and 9 figures

Photon-induced reactions play a key role in the nucleosynthesis of rare neutron-deficient p-nuclei. The paper focuses on (gamma,alpha), (gamma,p), and (gamma,n) reactions which define the corresponding p-process path. The relation between stellar reaction rates and laboratory cross sections is analyzed for photon-induced reactions and their inverse capture reactions to evaluate various experimental approaches. An improved version S_C(E) of the astrophysical S-factor is suggested which is based on the Coulomb wave functions. S_C(E) avoids the apparent energy dependence which is otherwise obtained for capture reactions on heavy nuclei. It is found that a special type of synchrotron radiation available at SPring-8 that mimics stellar blackbody radiation at billions of Kelvin is a promising tool for future experiments. By using the blackbody synchrotron radiation, sufficient event rates for (gamma,alpha) and (gamma,p) reactions in the p-process path can be expected. Cross sections of the $^{186}$W, $^{187}$Re, $^{188}$Os($\gamma,n$) reactions were measured using quasi-monochromatic photon beams from laser Compton scattering (LCS) with average energies from 7.3 to 10.9 MeV. The results are compared with the predictions of Hauser-Feshbach statistical calculations using four different sets of input parameters. In addition, the inverse neutron capture cross sections were evaluated by constraining the model parameters, especially the $E1$ strength function, on the basis of the experimental data. The present experiment helps to further constrain the correction factor $F_{\sigma}$ for the neutron capture on the 9.75 keV state in $^{187}$Os. Implications of $F_{\sigma}$ to the Re-Os cosmochronology are discussed with a focus on the uncertainty in the estimate of the age of the Galaxy., Comment: 11 pages

The astrophysical reaction rates of the 16O(a,g)20Ne capture reaction and its inverse 20Ne(g,a)16O photodisintegration reaction are given by the sum of several narrow resonances and a small direct capture contribution at low temperatures. Although the thermal population of low lying excited states in 16O and 20Ne is extremely small, the first excited state in 20Ne plays a non-negligible role for the photodisintegration rate. The neutron capture cross section of the unstable s-process branching nucleus 185W has been derived from experimental data of the inverse 186W(g,n)185W photodisintegration taken with monochromatic photon beams from laser Compton scattering. The result of sigma = 553 +- 60 mb at kT = 30 keV leads to a relatively high effective neutron density in the classical s-process of N_n = 4.7 \times 10^8 cm^-3. A realistic model for the s-process in thermally pulsing AGB stars overestimates the abundance of 186Os significantly because of the relatively small neutron capture cross section of 185W., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

We study the astrophysical reaction rate for the formation of $^{9}$Be through the three body reaction $\alpha(\alpha n,\gamma)$. This reaction is one of the key reactions which could bridge the mass gap at A = 8 nuclear systems to produce intermediate-to-heavy mass elements in alpha- and neutron-rich environments such as r-process nucleosynthesis in supernova explosions, s-process nucleosynthesis in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, and primordial nucleosynthesis in baryon inhomogeneous cosmological models. To calculate the thermonuclear reaction rate in a wide range of temperatures, we numerically integrate the thermal average of cross sections assuming a two-steps formation through a metastable $^{8}$Be. Off-resonant and on-resonant contributions from the ground state in $^{8}$Be are taken into account. As input cross section, we adopt the latest experimental data by photodisintegration of $^{9}$Be with laser-electron photon beams, which covers all relevant resonances in $^{9}$Be. We provide the reaction rate for $\alpha(\alpha n,\gamma)^{9}$Be in the temperature range from T$_{9}$=10$^{-3}$ to T$_{9}$=10$^{1}$ both in the tabular form and in the analytical form. The calculated reaction rate is compared with the reaction rates of the CF88 and the NACRE compilations. The CF88 rate is valid at $T_{9} > 0.028$ due to lack of the off-resonant contribution. The CF88 rate differs from the present rate by a factor of two in a temperature range $T_{9} \geq 0.1$. The NACRE rate, which adopted different sources of experimental information on resonance states in $^{9}$Be, is 4--12 times larger than the present rate at $T_{9} \leq 0.028$, but is consistent with the present rate to within $\pm 20 %$ at $T_{9} \geq 0.1$., Comment: 32 pages (incl 6 figures), Nucl.
