Abstract

Solar irradiance is fundamental data crucial for analyses related to weather and climate. High-precision estimation models are necessary to create areal data for solar irradiance. In this study, we developed a novel estimation model by utilizing machine learning and multiband data from meteorological satellite observations. Particularly under clear-sky and thin clouds, satellite observations can be influenced by surface reflections, which may lead to overfitting to ground observations. To make the model applicable at any location, we constructed the model incorporating prior information such as radiative transfer models and clear-sky probability, based on physical and meteorological knowledge. Abstract

Photoneutron reactions on $^{208}$Pb in the Giant Dipole Resonance energy region have been investigated at the $\gamma$-ray beam line of the NewSUBARU facility in Japan. The measurements made use of quasi-monochromatic laser Compton backscattering $\gamma$-ray beams in a broad energy range, from the neutron threshold up to 38 MeV, and of a flat-efficiency moderated $^3$He neutron detection system along with associated neutron-multiplicity sorting methods. We report absolute cross sections and mean photoneutron energies for the $^{208}$Pb$(\gamma,\,inX)$ reactions with $i$~=~1 to 4. The fine structure present in the $^{208}$Pb$(\gamma,\,n)$ cross sections at incident energies lower than 13~MeV has been observed. The photoabsorption cross section has been obtained as the sum of the $(\gamma,\,inX)$ reaction cross sections. By reproducing the measured ring-ratio values at excitation energies below the two neutron separation energy, we were able to extract estimations on the $^{208}$Pb$(\gamma,\,n)$ photoneutron energy spectra and on the partial photoneutron cross sections for leaving the residual $^{207}$Pb in its ground and first two excited states. The present results are compared with data from the literature and statistical model calculations.

Abstract

New measurements of photofission and photoneutron reactions on $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th in the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) energy region have been performed at the laser Compton-scattering $\gamma$-ray source of the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility using a high-and-flat efficiency moderated $^3$He detection array. The neutron-multiplicity sorting of high-multiplicity fission neutron coincidence events has been performed using a dedicated energy dependent, multiple firing statistical treatment. The photoneutron $(\gamma,\,in)$ with $i$~=~1~--~3 and photofission $(\gamma,\,F)$ reactions have been discriminated by considering a Gaussian distribution of prompt-fission-neutron (PFN) multiplicities predicted by the theory of evaporation in sequential neutron emission from excited fission fragments. We report experimental $(\gamma,\,n)$, $(\gamma,\,2n)$, $(\gamma,\,3n)$ and $(\gamma,\,F)$ cross sections, average energies of PFNs and of $(\gamma,\,in)$ photoneutrons, as well as the mean number of PFNs per fission act and the width of the PFNs multiplicity distribution. Based on these primary experimental results and combined with reasonable assumptions, we extract also the first- and second-chance fission contributions. The new experimental results are compared with statistical-model calculations performed with the EMPIRE-3.2 Malta and TALYS-1.964 codes on the present data and with prompt fission emission calculations obtained with the Los Alamos model in the frame of the most probable fragmentation approach with and without sequential emission.

Abstract

The gramicidin-perforated patch-clamp technique is indispensable for recording neuronal activities without changing the intracellular Cl− concentration. Conventionally, gramicidin contained in the pipette fluid is delivered to the cell membrane by passive diffusion. Gramicidin deposited on the pipette orifice sometimes hampers giga-seal formation, and perforation progresses only slowly. These problems may be circumvented by delivering a high concentration of gramicidin from an intra-pipette capillary after a giga-seal is formed. We herein describe the detailed protocol of this improved method. This protocol would greatly facilitate the investigation of Cl− gradient-dependent neuronal activities.

Abstract

Abstract Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by impaired social communication and repetitive behaviors. In recent years, a pharmacological mouse model of ASD involving maternal administration of valproic acid (VPA) has become widely used. Newborn pups in this model show an abnormal balance between excitatory and inhibitory (E/I) signaling in neurons and exhibit ASD-like behavior. However, the molecular basis of this model and its implications for the pathogenesis of ASD in humans remain unknown. Using quantitative secretome analysis, we found that the level of leucine-rich repeat and immunoglobulin domain-containing protein 2 (Lingo2) was upregulated in the conditioned medium of VPA model neurons. This upregulation was associated with excitatory synaptic organizer activity. The secreted form of the extracellular domain of Lingo2 (sLingo2) is produced by the transmembrane metalloprotease ADAM10 through proteolytic processing. sLingo2 was found to induce the formation of excitatory synapses in both mouse and human neurons, and treatment with sLingo2 resulted in an increased frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents in human neurons. These findings suggest that sLingo2 is an excitatory synapse organizer involved in ASD, and further understanding of the mechanisms by which sLingo2 induces excitatory synaptogenesis is expected to advance our understanding of the pathogenesis of ASD.

Abstract

Background/Objectives: The usefulness of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) for low absorption in the parenchymal phase and contrast effects in the delayed phase for pancreatic cancer is not clear. Therefore, the diagnostic capability of low-KeV images obtained using DECT for pancreatic cancer in the pancreatic parenchymal and delayed phases was evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively. Methods: Twenty-five patients with pancreatic cancer who underwent contrast-enhanced DECT were included. A total of 50 and 70 KeV CT images, classified as low-keV and conventional CT-equivalent images, were produced, respectively. The tumor-to-pancreas contrast (Hounsfield units [HU]) in the pancreatic parenchymal and delayed phases was calculated by subtracting the CT value of the pancreatic tumor from that of normal parenchyma. Results: The median tumor-to-pancreas contrast on 50 KeV CT in the pancreatic parenchymal phase (133 HU) was higher than that on conventional CT (68 HU) (p < 0.001). The median tumor-to-pancreas contrast in the delayed phase was −28 HU for 50 KeV CT and −9 HU for conventional CT (p = 0.545). For tumors < 20 mm, the tumor-to-pancreas contrast of 50 KeV CT (−39 HU) had a significantly clearer contrast effect than that of conventional CT (−16.5 HU), even in the delayed phase (p = 0.034). Conclusions: These 50 KeV CT images may clarify the low-absorption areas of pancreatic cancer in the pancreatic parenchymal phase. A good contrast effect was observed in small pancreatic cancers on 50 KeV delayed-phase images, suggesting that DECT is useful for the visualization of early pancreatic cancer with a small tumor diameter.

Abstract

Japan Astrometry Satellite Mission for INfrared Exploration (JASMINE) is a planned M-class science space mission by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. JASMINE has two main science goals. One is the Galactic archaeology with Galactic Center Survey, which aims to reveal the Milky Way's central core structure and formation history from Gaia-level (~25 $\mu$as) astrometry in the Near-Infrared (NIR) Hw-band (1.0-1.6 $\mu$m). The other is the Exoplanet Survey, which aims to discover transiting Earth-like exoplanets in the habitable zone from NIR time-series photometry of M dwarfs when the Galactic center is not accessible. We introduce the mission, review many science objectives, and present the instrument concept. JASMINE will be the first dedicated NIR astrometry space mission and provide precise astrometric information of the stars in the Galactic center, taking advantage of the significantly lower extinction in the NIR. The precise astrometry is obtained by taking many short-exposure images. Hence, the JASMINE Galactic center survey data will be valuable for studies of exoplanet transits, asteroseismology, variable stars and microlensing studies, including discovery of (intermediate mass) black holes. Abstract

We simultaneously measured the $^4$He($\gamma, n$)$^3$He and $^4$He($\gamma, p$)$^3$H reactions in the energy range around the giant dipole resonance. A quasi-monoenergetic photon beam produced via the laser Compton scattering technique was irradiated on the active-target time-projection chamber filled with helium gas, and trajectories of charged decay particles emitted from $^4$He were measured. Our data suggest that the $^4$He($\gamma, n$)$^3$He and $^4$He($\gamma, p$)$^3$H cross sections peak around 26 MeV. This result contradicts the previous experimental data reported by Shima et al. but is consistent with other experimental results., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

BackgroundClinical trials enroll patients with active fibrotic nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [NAFLD] activity score ≥ 4) and significant fibrosis (F ≥ 2); however, screening failure rates are high following biopsy. We developed new scores to identify active fibrotic NASH using FibroScan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).MethodsWe undertook prospective primary (n = 176), retrospective validation (n = 169), and University of California San Diego (UCSD; n = 234) studies of liver biopsy-proven NAFLD. Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) using FibroScan or magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), or proton density fat fraction (PDFF), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were combined to develop a two-step strategy-FibroScan-based LSM followed by CAP with AST (F-CAST) and MRE-based LSM followed by PDFF with AST (M-PAST)-and compared with FibroScan-AST (FAST) and MRI-AST (MAST) for diagnosing active fibrotic NASH. Abstract

The intensity and energy spatial distributions of collimated laser Compton scattering (LCS) $\gamma$-ray beams and of the associated bremsstrahlung beams have been investigated as functions of the electron beam energy, electron beam phase space distribution, laser optics conditions and laser polarization. We show that the beam halo is affected to different extents by variations in the above listed parameters. In the present work, we have used laser Compton scattering simulations performed with the \texttt{eliLaBr} code (https://github.com/dan-mihai-filipescu/eliLaBr) and real LCS and bremsstrahlung $\gamma$-ray beams produced at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. A 500~$\mu$m MiniPIX X-ray camera was used as beamspot monitor in a wide $\gamma$-ray beam energy range between 1.73~MeV and 38.1~MeV.

Abstract

Photoneutron emission cross sections were measured for $^{13}$C below $2n$ threshold using quasi-monochromatic $\gamma$-ray beams produced in laser Compton-scattering at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. The data show fine structures in the low-energy tail of the giant-dipole resonance; the integrated strength of the fine structure below 18~MeV is intermediate among the past measurements with bremsstrahlung and the positron annihilation $\gamma$ rays. We compare the photoneutron emission data with the {\sf TALYS} statistical model calculation implemented with the simple modified Lorentzian model of $E1$ and $M1$ strengths. We also compare the total photoabsorption cross sections for $^{13}$C with the shell model and antisymmetrized molecular dynamics calculations as well as the statistical model calculation. We further investigate the consistency between the present photoneutron emission and the reverse $^{12}$C(n,$\gamma$) cross sections through their corresponding astrophysical rate.

Abstract

Background: The usefulness of monitoring treatment effect of tafamidis using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) extracellular volume fraction (ECV) has been reported. Objective: we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the usefulness of this method. Methods: Data from 246 ATTR-CMs from six studies were extracted and included in the analysis. An inverse variance meta-analysis using a random effects model was performed to evaluate the change in MRI-ECV before and after tafamidis treatment. The analysis was also performed by classifying the patients into ATTR-CM types (wild-type or hereditary). Results: ECV change before and after tafamidis treatment was 0.33% (95% CI: −1.83–2.49, I2 = 0%, p = 0.76 for heterogeneity) in the treatment group and 4.23% (95% CI: 0.44–8.02, I2 = 0%, p = 0.18 for heterogeneity) in the non-treatment group. The change in ECV before and after treatment was not significant in the treated group (p = 0.76), but there was a significant increase in the non-treated group (p = 0.03). There was no difference in the change in ECV between wild-type (95% CI: −2.65–3.40) and hereditary-type (95% CI: −9.28–4.28) (p = 0.45). Conclusions: The results of this meta-analysis suggest that MRI-ECV measurement is a useful imaging method for noninvasively evaluating the efficacy of tafamidis treatment for ATTR-CM.

Abstract

Introduction: Primary small bowel carcinoma in pregnant women is extremely rare. Small bowel cancer is difficult to diagnose because of its rarity, lack of specific clinical symptoms, and particular anatomical features. We experienced a case of primary small bowel adenocarcinoma with ovarian metastasis during pregnancy. This is the first reported case of a patient with small bowel adenocarcinoma whose pregnancy continued to term and ended in delivery. Case Presentation: A 32-year-old pregnant woman developed abdominal pain, and imaging examination revealed an ovarian tumor at 29 weeks of gestation. We performed laparotomy and resected the ovarian tumor, which was initially suspected to be primary ovarian cancer. The patient continued the pregnancy to term. A detailed examination of the abdominal cavity during cesarean delivery at 37 weeks revealed that the primary lesion was located in the small bowel. Conclusion: It is important to recognize that the small bowel may be the primary site of metastatic ovarian cancer. Detailed and careful examination is necessary to diagnose small bowel cancer during pregnancy.
