10. Validation of UV solar radiation data from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) with ground based measurements on the Mediterranean coast

[EN] The erythemal UV daily dose (EDD) and the local noon UV Index (UVI) obtained from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), on board NASA’s Aura satellite, have been validated for the period 2005-2013 using ground based measurements at 5 different sites in the Mediterranean coast: Murcia, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona and Rome (where only measurements of the local noon UVI were available). Ground based measurements were made using YES UVB-1 radiometers in Murcia, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona, and a Brewer MKIV 067 spectrophotometer in Rome. The results of the validation showed good agreement between the satellite instrument and the ground based measurements, although the OMI values overestimate the ground based measurements, being the difference between both types of measurements maximum during the spring and summer, and minimum during autumn and winter. The evolution of the EDD shows a clear seasonal behavior for all measuring sites for both, ground based and satellite data, with maximum values in summer (June and July) and minimum values in winter (December and January). A high percentage of cases (>80%) showed minimum differences (0-1 UVI units) between the UVI obtained by OMI and the UVI obtained by ground based instruments for all measuring sites. In every measuring site, high (6-7) or very high (8-10) UVI values are reached for a high percentage of the days of the analyzed period, but very few extreme (≥11) UVI values are reached. Las medidas con base en tierra fueron realizadas con radiómetros YES UVB-1 en Murcia, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca y Barcelona, y con un espectrofotómetro Brewer MKIV en Roma. La evolución de la EDD muestra un claro comportamiento estacional en todas las localidades, tanto para los datos de suelo como para los satelitales, con valores máximos en verano (junio y julio) y valores mínimos en invierno (diciembre y enero). Los resultados de la validación muestran una buena correlación entre los datos satelitales y las medidas con base en tierra, aunque las del OMI sobreestiman las de los instrumentos de suelo. Las diferencias entre ambos conjuntos de medidas es máxima para los meses de primavera y verano y mínima en los meses de otoño e invierno. Un elevado porcentaje de casos(>80%) presenta diferencias mínimas (0 ó 1 unidades) entre el UVI obtenido con el OMI y el obtenido con los instrumentos de suelo para todas las estaciones de medida. Abstract

The spectral values of the aerosol optical thickness [[Tau].sub.a[Lambda]] in the 400-670 nm band have been determined from 500 solar direct irradiance spectra at normal incidence registered at Valencia (Spain) in the period from July 1993 to March 1997. The [[Tau].sub.a[Lambda]] values obtained from experimental measurements have been compared with the boundary layer aerosol models implemented in the radiative transfer codes ZD-LOA and LOWTRAN 7. For the ZD-LOA code, the continental and maritime models have been considered and for the LOWTRAN 7 code the rural, maritime, urban and tropospheric models have been used. The obtained results show that the aerosol model that best represents the average turbidity of the boundary layer for the urban area of Valencia (Spain) is the continental model when the ZD-LOA code is used and the urban model when the LOWTRAN 7 code is used. Abstract

[EN] This paper presents an improved empirical model that predicts ultraviolet erythemal radiation (UVER) and considers all aspects of atmospheric conditions in Valencia, Spain. The analyzed model is a potential function whose dependent variable is UVER radiation and independent variables are the clearness index and slant ozone column. A potential regression function with all the information contributed a small coefficient of determination and one chose to use a regression potential-exponential mathematical form which improved the coefficient of similar determination. A study was carried out on the influence of season on the regression parameters. This was found to be considerable due to the clearness index. The convergence between the values calculated by the model and the experimental values was analyzed using the mean bias error (MBE) and mean absolute bias error (MABE) statistical parameters. The clearness index and ozone column intervals were analyzed and found to give an improved prediction of the UVER clearness index using regression analysis. Also, a sensitivity analysis was performed on the regression coefficients and parameters. It is important to study the effects of UVER radiation predicted by the model on human health or on agriculture crop growth and yield.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The daily values of UVB irradiation (290-315 nm), IUVB, and the broadband total irradiation (300-2800 nm), IT, measured on a horizontal plane have been correlated for the period 2000-2008 at 16 measurement sites in Spain. The results have been compared with the daily experimental values registered at the same sites during the period 2009-2011. The coefficients of determination R2 obtained by applying a linear regression are higher than 0.88 for all sites and increase to 0.94 when using a quadratic regression. When all data are considered together, the values of R2 are 0.91 and 0.97 for the linear and quadratic regressions, respectively. Three different clearness indices, which are dimensionless parameters, have been also used in order to reduce the uncertainties of the estimations and to reduce the local nature of the coefficients: (1) the UVB clearness index, kTUVB = IUVB/ I0UVB; (2) the modified UVB clearness index, k′TUVB and (3) the estimated UVB clearness index, k*TUVB. The results show a strong dependence on the solar zenith angle. The bi-dimensional regression of kTUVB as a function of the solar zenith angle and the clearness index, kT, substantially improves the correlation, with R2 values higher than 0.81 for all sites. Finally, a formula relating kTUVB and kT, valid for latitudes between 36°N and 44°N, has been obtained: kTUVB = 0.064 kT - 0.0011 θz - 1.24 E-05 ϕ + 7.6 E-05 λ + 0.063, where θz represents the solar zenith angle (in degrees), ϕ is the latitude (in degrees) of the site and λ is the distance to the sea (in km). We have compared the experimental values for the period 2009-2011 with those estimated using this expression. For this, the coefficient of determination (R2) is 0.87, with a MBD of -3.4%, a RMSE of 21% and a NRMSE of 8.7%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The capability to monitor and predict the physical characteristics of the atmosphere has been largely improved last decades. Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and precipitable water vapor amount (W) are crucial atmospheric parameters in the understanding of atmospheric dynamics, as well as for the atmospheric correction of optical remote sensing images to be employed for land and water management. The objective of this work has been to adopt a methodology for measuring the water vapor and aerosol optical thickness in the atmospheric column by means of a Fieldspec Pro FR spectroradiometer. These measurements will be later useful for improving accuracy and helping to interpret remote sensing data, not only in the SPARC 2004 field campaign but for other future field campaigns aimed at land management. The methodology is based on two well-known techniques of sun photometry: the inversion of sun direct irradiance for AOT and split window, for precipitable water vapor. The direct solar irradiance were acquired simultaneously to Cimel CE318 NE and Microtops II measurements, working collocated during the SPARC 2004 campaign held at Barrax (Spain) in 2004 July. The obtained measurements have been compared to simultaneous retrievals from these collocated sun photometers. The results so far obtained showed the feasibility of this instrument to be employed for columnar water vapor and aerosol optical thickness retrieval. For water vapor, the deviation were found to be well within the estimated Cimel and Microtops uncertainty, stated as 10%. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
