Abstract

Understanding customer behavior in retail stores plays a crucial role in improving customer satisfaction by adding personalized value to services. Behavior analysis reveals both general and detailed patterns in the interaction of customers with a store items and other people, providing store managers with insight into customer preferences. Several solutions aim to utilize this data by recognizing specific behaviors through statistical visualization. However, current approaches are limited to the analysis of small customer behavior sets, utilizing conventional methods to detect behaviors. They do not use deep learning techniques such as deep neural networks, which are powerful methods in the field of computer vision. Furthermore, these methods provide limited figures when visualizing the behavioral data acquired by the system. In this study, we propose a framework that includes three primary parts: mathematical modeling of customer behaviors, behavior analysis using an efficient deep learning based system, and individual and group behavior visualization. Each module and the entire system were validated using data from actual situations in a retail store.

Abstract

The lack of large-scale datasets has been impeding the advance of deep learning approaches to the problem of F-formation detection. Moreover, most research works on this problem rely on input sensor signals of object location and orientation rather than image signals. To address this, we develop a new, large-scale dataset of simulated images for F-formation detection, called F-formation Simulation Dataset (F2SD). F2SD contains nearly 60,000 images simulated from GTA-5, with bounding boxes and orientation information on images, making it useful for a wide variety of modelling approaches. It is also closer to practical scenarios, where three-dimensional location and orientation information are costly to record. It is challenging to construct such a large-scale simulated dataset while keeping it realistic. Furthermore, the available research utilizes conventional methods to detect groups. They do not detect groups directly from the image. 10. A New Class of Alumina-Forming Superalloy for 3D Printing

Abstract

A new class of crack-resistant nickel-based superalloy containing high $\gamma^\prime$ fraction is studied for the laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) process. The effects of the (Nb+Ta)/Al ratio is emphasised, a strategy that is shown to confer excellent low-temperature strength whilst maintaining oxidation resistance at high temperatures via stable alumina scale formation. The processability of the new alloys is characterised with respect to defect assessment by micro-focus x-ray computed tomography; use is made of a prototype turbine blade geometry and the heritage alloy CM247LC as a benchmark. In all cases, some processing-related porosity is present in thin wall sections such as the trailing edge, but this can be avoided by judicious processing. The cracking seen in CM247LC -- in solid-state, liquation and solidification forms -- is avoided. A novel sub-solvus heat treatment strategy is proposed which takes advantage of AM not requiring solutioning; super-solvus heat treatment is inappropriate since it embrittles the material by deterioration of the texture and coarsening of grain boundary carbides. The tensile strength of the new superalloy is greatest when the Nb+Ta content is highest and exceeds that of CM247LC up to $\sim$900$\,$$^\circ$C. The oxidation resistance is best when Al content is highest, and oxidation-assisted cracking resistance maximized when the (Nb+Ta)/Al ratio is balanced. In all cases these are equivalent or superior to that of CM247LC. Nevertheless, the creep resistance of the new alloys is somewhat inferior to that of CM247LC for which the $\gamma^\prime$, C, and B contents are higher; this implies a processing/property trade-off which requires further clarification.

Abstract

Abstract Aim To evaluate whether establishing an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) specialist team, termed the Yokohama Advanced Cardiopulmonary Help Team (YACHT), affected the outcomes and centralization of patients requiring ECMO in Yokohama‐Yokosuka regions. Methods This retrospective observational study included patients aged ≥18 years and treated with venovenous‐ECMO for severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) from 2014 to 2023. The primary outcome was intensive care unit (ICU) mortality. The secondary outcomes included ICU‐, mechanical ventilator‐, and ECMO‐free days and complications during the first 28 days. Results This study included 46 (12 without‐ and 34 with‐YACHT) patients. Among with‐YACHT patients, 24 were transferred to our hospital from other hospitals, 14 were assessed by dispatched ECMO physicians, and 9 were transferred after ECMO introduction. Abstract

Abstract The oldest oceanic basin (160–180 Ma) in the western Pacific is the birthplace of the Pacific Plate and is thus essential for understanding the formation and evolution of the oceanic plate. However, the upper mantle structure beneath the region has not been thoroughly investigated because of the remoteness and difficulties of long‐term in situ seismic measurements at the ocean bottom. From 2018 to 2019, the Oldest‐1 experiment on the oldest seafloor was conducted as part of the international Pacific Array initiative. We present the first three‐dimensional P‐wave velocity structure down to a depth of 350 km based on the relative travel time residuals of teleseismic earthquakes recorded by 11 broadband ocean‐bottom seismometers operated during the Oldest‐1 experiment. Our result shows a fast P‐wave velocity anomaly (VP perturbation of 2%–4% faster than average) at a depth of 95–185 km beneath the northeast of the study area. This structure is interpreted as evidence of dry, viscous, and rigid materials at depths below the lithosphere. Two slow anomalies (VP perturbation of 2%–4% slower than average) are seen beneath the southwestern and eastern (the oldest seafloor >170 Ma) parts of the array site. The low‐velocity zones are found at depths of 95–305 km. The observed velocity structures can be indicative of plume activities that affected the upper mantle as the Pacific Plate migrated over hotspots from the southeast. Alternatively, the observed velocity features may provide seismic evidence for small‐scale sublithospheric convection.

Abstract

This study presents the velocity structures of the seafloor sediment across the Pacific using teleseismic body waves recorded by arrays of ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs). We apply the method inverting the multicomponent stacked autocorrelation functions and radial-component waveform of teleseismic body waves. We analyze OBSs distributed across the Pacific Ocean, through a wide range of water depths and equipped with various sensor types. The inverted models agreeing with measurements of seafloor drilling samples demonstrate the broad applicability of employing the inversion method to resolve sediment thicknesses ranging from <100 m to a few kilometers. In addition to various broad-band OBSs, we confirm our method works also for short-period sensors, since our retrieved the model using data from a short-period sensor in Northeast Japan agrees with active-source seismic survey analyses. The constrained models show various numbers of intrasediment discontinuities across different locations. Furthermore, the newly characterized sediment models have higher values of P -wave to S -wave velocity ratio (⁠|${{V}_P}$| / |${{V}_S}$|⁠) than the previously known scaling relationships, which suggests a larger effect of sediment-layer reverberation on the body-wave analysis than we have anticipated. The sediment velocity models obtained in this study produce Rayleigh-wave admittances that are consistent with those in previous studies but with much finer structural details within the sediment layer. The reverberation waveform inversion method will enable improved predictions of the impact of the water and sediment layers in body-wave records from existing and future OBS observations. Abstract

Abstract Magnetotelluric (MT) data are often distorted by near-surface small-scale lateral heterogeneities. Inverting distorted MT data may produce artifacts or false anomalies, leading to unreliable interpretation. This problem can be avoided by inverting the phase tensor (PT), which is known to be free of galvanic distortion. However, PT inversion is known to strongly depend on the initial or prior model, because the PT itself does not contain absolute resistivity information. To obtain a reliable inversion result from a set of PT data, a proper initial or prior model is crucial. In this study, a one-dimensional mean resistivity profile estimated from the average sum-of-squared-elements impedance was chosen as an initial model, because it was proven to be less sensitive to galvanic distortion. Examples with synthetic data showed that PT inversion using such an initial and prior model is a viable approach for inverting galvanically distorted MT data. In addition, the present paper considers a situation, where the distortion is not purely galvanic. A simple synthetic study indicated that the PT is affected by inductive distortion, and thus, such inversion results should be interpreted with caution. Graphic Abstract

Abstract

Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is a promising method for producing titanium components from powder but a limitation is that high sintering temperatures (>900 °C) are normally required to eliminate porosity. Herein, the SPS of commercially pure titanium powder is reported using both cyclic and constant uniaxial pressure and compare densification, microstructure, and mechanical behavior. The following parameters are varied: sintering temperature, TS, 400 to 900 °C; cyclic and constant pressures, 100 to 500 MPa; with and without an isothermal dwell of 60 min at TS. The mechanical behavior is determined by bend and tensile testing. It is demonstrated that the application of cyclic pressure (cyclic‐SPS) gives superior densification over the range of parameters investigated compared with a constant pressure. Bend testing reveals improved ductility after cyclic‐SPS compared with a constant pressure. The dwell at TS further improves mechanical properties, giving excellent tensile ductility and strength. Consequently, at the ultralow temperature of 500 °C, nearly fully dense, ductile, titanium is achieved. It is shown that cyclic pressure enhances the degree of powder compaction at room temperature, and mechanisms are proposed to rationalize the effect of cyclic‐SPS on enhancing the rates of densification and sintering as the temperature increases during processing. Abstract

This is a first report on profilometry‐based indentation plastometry (PIP) at high temperature (HT), covering both thermal characterization and issues for obtaining stress–strain curves. The heating system has a relatively low thermal inertia, reaching 800 °C within about 10 min, while both indentation (≈20 s) and cooling (≈20 min) are also quick. This capability is useful in terms of limiting exposure of the sample to prolonged periods at HT, and hence avoiding the formation of thick oxide layers (which can affect indent profiles and hence inferred stress–strain curves). There is good general consistency between stress–strain curves obtained via HT‐PIP and those from tensile testing. However, the possibility of creep (time‐dependent deformation) affecting the outcomes (of both types of test), particularly at higher temperatures, should be borne in mind. Creep has a characteristic effect on tensile curves, which can often be confirmed and investigated by changing the imposed strain rate. It can also be revealed by carrying out the HT‐PIP testing with different penetration velocities or by monitoring the shape of the load–displacement plot. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We introduce a label-free method to rapidly phenotype and classify cells purely based on physical properties. We extract 15 biophysical parameters from cells as they deform in a microfluidic stretching flow field via high-speed microscopy and apply machine-learning approaches to discriminate different cell types and states. When employing the full 15 dimensional dataset, the technique robustly classifies individual cells based on their pluripotency, with accuracy above 95%. Rheological and morphological properties of cells while deforming were critical for this classification. We also show the application of this method in accurate classifying cells based on their viability, drug screening and detecting populations of malignant cells in mixed samples. We show that some of the extracted parameters are not linearly independent, and in fact we reach maximum classification accuracy by using only a subset of parameters. However, the informative subsets could vary depending on cell types in the sample. This work shows the utility of an assay purely based on intrinsic biophysical properties of cells to identify changes in cell state. In addition to a label-free alternative to flow cytometry in certain applications, this work, also can provide novel intracellular metrics that would not be feasible with labeled approaches (i.e. flow cytometry).

Abstract

Abstract Prior studies reported the association of reproductive factors with breast cancer (BC), but the evidence is inconsistent. We conducted a pooled analysis of nine cohort studies in Japan to evaluate the impact of six reproductive factors (age at menarche/age at first birth/number of births/age at menopause/use of female hormones/breastfeeding) on BC incidence. We conducted analyses according to menopausal status at the baseline or at the diagnosis. Hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated by applying Cox proportional‐hazards model in each study. These hazard ratios were integrated using a random‐effects model. Among 187,999 women (premenopausal: 61,113, postmenopausal: 126,886), we observed 873 premenopausal and 1,456 postmenopausal cases. Among premenopausal women, use of female hormones significantly increased BC incidence (HR: 1.53 [1.04–2.25]). Although P value for trend was not significant for age at first birth and number of births (P for trend: 0.15 and 0.30, respectively), women giving first birth at ages ≥36 experienced significantly higher BC incidence than at ages 21–25 years, and women who had ≥2 births experienced significantly lower BC incidence than nulliparous women. Among postmenopausal women, more births significantly decreased BC incidence (P for trend: 0.03). Although P value for trend was not significant for age at first birth and age at menopause (P for trend: 0.30 and 0.37, respectively), women giving first birth at ages 26–35 years experienced significantly higher BC incidence than at ages 21–25 years, and women with age at menopause: ≥50 years experienced significantly higher BC incidence than age at menopause: ≤44 years. BC incidence was similar according to age at menarche or breastfeeding history among both premenopausal and postmenopausal women. In conclusion, among Japanese women, use of female hormones increased BC incidence in premenopausal women, and more births decreased BC incidence in postmenopausal women.

Abstract

The article "Comments on 'Enormously large tippers observed in southwest China: can realistic 3-D EM modeling reproduce them?' by S. Xu et al. (2023)" critiques the existence of "enormously large" tippers in southwest China. The authors analyzed geomagnetic field data from 54 stations in China and found discrepancies in the interpretation of the data presented by Xu et al. They suggest that the reported anomalies can be attributed to a misinterpretation of the data, specifically related to the vertical component of the geomagnetic field.
