1. A Report on a Survey of Teacher Education Graduates: Class of 1970.

Abstract

This report surveyed all the teacher education majors who graduated from East Carolina University in the Class of 1970, two years after graduation. The questionnaire requested information on educational background, the relevance of the college experience to actual teaching experience, and self-ratings on their traits and abilities as professional teachers. This report was an attempt to evaluate teachers who had completed the teacher education program, as well as gain valuable "feedback" in order to possibly improve the educational curricula for future teachers. 2. A Study of Nursing Curriculum Factors and Achievement on the North Carolina State Board Test Pool Nursing Examination. Summary Report.

Abstract

A study was undertaken of the relationship between performance of the North Carolina State Board Test Pool Nursing Examination and grades in university courses of study of 441 nursing students (1974-78). Data were collected for each of the Ss and factor analysis was used to determine independent variable groupings. For each independent variable and its respective dependent variable grouping a step-wise multiple regression procedure was performed. Tables are used to compare the findings with 1964-68 nursing graduates, which show, among other things, that average scores in each area have declined but class means have increased for a high proportion of the undergraduate course grades measured. Overall the average course grades received by the 1974-78 graduates were higher, indicating possible grade escalation. However, the eight specific course grade measures (selected by factor analysis) used in various combinations as predictor variables for estimates of Board Examination scores did not show the general tendency (two increased, two decreased, four did not change significantly). Abstract

Abstract

Results of a follow-up study of school of education graduates are presented. The first of a four-part questionnaire requested personal background information. The second part inquired about competencies gained through education that could be applied to work and to living. The third part requested information concerning the relevance of the college experience to actual teaching experiences. Contained in the fourth part was a self-rating sheet for respondents to assess their respective abilities as professional teachers. Three open-ended questions were included about the university itself, its teacher education program, and the adequacy of the questionnaire. (Author/JD)

5. NCAIR: Its Story. A History of the North Carolina Association for Institutional Research.

Abstract

The development and operations of the North Carolina Association for Institutional Research (NCAIR) are traced, with attention to specific meetings and activities. Events that led to the establishment of NCAIR are noted, including the work of the 1972-1973 planning committee. The association's mission is identified as: promoting professional development; providing for the dissemination of information and ideas; helping to advance postsecondary education; and fostering a cooperative spirit among institutional researchers. High points of each annual meeting during 1973-1978 are identified, including descriptive information about speeches and papers, along with title and author identification. Also covered are: the tenth and eleventh annual meetings, conferences (drive-ins) that are held between annual meetings, cooperation with other groups, special interest group series, the number of sessions since 1973, the locations of meetings, the number of visits to campuses, and NCAIR's leaders. Appendices include: excerpts from "Planning in North Carolina Higher Education and Its Impact on the Role of Institutional Research" (Allan J. Barwick); the NCAIR constitution and bylaws, information on drive-ins, 1976-1984; and an index. (SW)
