Abstract

Trichobezoar is a mass found trapped in the gastrointestinal system formed from the ingestion of hair. They are mostly localized inside the stomach, and they can occasionally extend from the pylorus into the duodenum and small intestines. At the same time, they are almost always associated with trichotillomania, trichophagia, and other psychiatric diseases. Trichobezoar can be easily confused with other diseases characterized by abdominal pain and vomiting. Removal of the mass with laparotomic, laparoscopic, and endoscopic interventions is an available treatment approach. Among them, the laparotomic approach is the most effective treatment modality. Herein, we present a case and reviewed the literature from a general outlook in order to emphasize current, updated approaches to the pediatric cases with trichobezoar.

18. Response to inoculation and sowing date of soybean under Bafra Plain conditions in the northern region of Turkey

Abstract

The Bafra Plain (latitude 410 35' N; longitude 350 56' E) which located surrounding of Kizil Irmak delta in the northern Turkey, has a short plant growing season for spring sowings. However, the soils of the region (about 80 000 ha) may have an important soybean [Glycin max (L.) Merr.] production potential with using the earliest or mid-earliest cultivars. Field experiments were conducted to determine the optimum sowing date of soybean, and effects of inoculation and sowing date on the yield and yield components. P-9292 soybean cultivar was evaluated either inoculated with Rhizobium japonicum or not inoculated at 3 sowing dates for 1991 and 1992 and 4 sowing dates for 1993 at Bafra, Samsun. The experimental design was a randomized block in a split plot with four replications. Both seed inoculation and early sowing increased seed yields for each year. With earliest sowings in 1991, 1992 and 1993 seed yields were obtained as 2728, 2786 and 2779 kg ha-1, respectively which were 969, 614 and 887 kg ha-1 more than the latest sowings. Duration of periods between VE-R1, R1-R3 and VE-R8 were found more closely related with high yields than nodule number, plant height and 100-seed weight. Early-May to mid-May was the optimum sowing period of soybean for Bafra Plain.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effects of inoculation, planting dates and imbibition duration on the seed yield and agronomic traits of soybean (cv. P-9292) under Bafra (Samsun) climatical condition. Four planting dates (6, 17, 27 May and 6 June) were assessed in 1993. For imbibition, the seeds were soaked in wet towels for 0, 3, 6, 12, 24 or 48 hours. Then, either inoculated (with R. japonicum) or non inoculated seeds were planted. A split-split randomized block design with three replicates was used. Emergence, flowering, pod filling and the maturity prolonged when the seeds were early planted. But at the last two planting'dates (27 May and 6 June), when the seeds were soaked for 24 and 48 hours, the emergences hastened for 2 to 3 days. The growing period of plants ranged from 124 to 113 days depending on the planting dates. The plant height, number of pod/plant, number of seed/plant, number of nodule/plant, nodule dry weight/plant and 1000 seeds weight were increased with the inoculation. However, in the last planting date, all the values for the same characters were decreased. The oil content of seed was decreased, but the protein content was increased by inoculation. The oil and protein contents of seed were 23.04 and 36.96 %, respectively, when the seeds were not inoculated. Similarly, 22.86 and 38.33 % values for oil and protein contents, respectively, were obtained when the seeds were inoculated. Abstract

The objective of the present work was to investigate the influence of locations on bioactive propertiest, phenolic compounds and mineral contents of bee pollens. The oil content of pollen grains changed between 3.50% (Alanya) and 6.85% (Russia-Perm Region). The highest total phenolic content (720 mg/100g) and antioxidant activity values (81.4%) were observed in pollens obtained from the Russia-Perm Region and Alanya districts, respectively. Additionally, the highest carotenoid was found in a pollen sample collected from Karaman (Sarıveliler) (98.6 mg/g). The major phenolic compounds were (+)-catechin (66.75-337.39 mg/100g) and quercetin (61.2-1221.7 mg/100g) in all pollen samples. The pollen samples were observed to be a significant source of potassium (3846-6287 mg/kg), phosphorus (2947-5010 mg/kg), calcium (1022-2424 mg/kg) and sulfur (1744-2397 mg/kg). All of the analysis results were significantly affected by supplying locations. The antioxidant activity values of pollens were found partly similar and varied depending on locations. The content of saturated fatty acid (palmitic) was high (20-30%) in the tested pollen samples but did not exceed the content of linoleic acid.

41. Heart rate variability in patients with systemic sarcoidosis.

Abstract

Purpose: The identification of subjects with systemic sarcoidosis at higher risk for sudden death is an unresolved issue. An influence of the autonomic activity on the genesis of ventricular arrhythmias was postulated. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis provides a useful method to measure autonomic activity, and is a predictor of increased risk of death in various conditions. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate HRV in patients with systemic sarcoidosis.Methods: The study included 35 patients with biopsy proven systemic sarcoidosis who were not taking antiarrhythmic medications. Thallium scintigraphy was performed to all patients with systemic sarcoidosis. The cardiac sarcoidosis was accepted in 16 patients as abnormal thallium scintigraphy and normal coronary arteriography. The time-domain analysis of HRV was expressed as the standard deviation of all normal to normal NN intervals (SDNN) detected during 24-hour Holter monitoring. Twenty-four healthy subjects represented a control group for HRV analysis.Results: There were no differences in age (44 +/- 13 years for cardiac sarcoidosis, 42 +/- 15 years for noncardiac sarcoidosis, and 40 +/- 10 years for control group; P = NS), sex (the ratio of female; 63%, 68%, and 55%, respectively; P = NS), and echocardiographic ejection fraction (63 +/- 10%, 67 +/- 8%, and 69 +/- 6%, respectively; P = NS) among study groups. The mean SDNN value of the group with cardiac sarcoidosis was significantly lower than both the group with noncardiac sarcoidosis and the control group (72 +/- 32 ms vs 110 +/- 46 ms and 152 +/- 36 ms; P < 0.05, respectively).Conclusion: HRV is decreased in patients with systemic sarcoidosis compared to the control group. 44. Erectile Dysfunction As a Generalized Vascular Dysfunction

Abstract

Objective: We hypothesize that generalized vascular dysfunction may be the underlying cause in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) without atherosclerosis and its major risk factors. Methods: In all, 30 outpatients with ED and 25 healthy volunteers as a control group were enrolled for this study. Aortic stiffness was calculated from data obtained by echocardiographic examination, which was performed using commercially available equipment with a 2.5- to 3.5-MHz transducer. Endothelium-dependent flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery was assessed using a high-resolution ultrasound system with a 10-MHz linear-array vascular transducer. Shear stress and nitroglycerin was used as a stimulus for assessing endothelium-dependent FMD and nonendothelium-dependent dilation of the brachial artery. Results: FMD was significantly decreased in the ED group compared with control group (4.1 +/- 3.1% vs 9.7 +/- 3.5%, P < .001). Nonendothelium-dependent dilation was statistically insignificant in patients with ED compared with control subjects (13 +/- 3.9% vs 15.4 +/- 3.8%, P = .55). The relationship between ED and FMD was significant (r = -0.66, P < .001), whereas no relationship was found between ED and nonendothelium-dependent dilation (r = -0.23, P> .05). Aortic strain (3.7 +/- 2.7% vs 9.5 +/- 3.2%, P < .001) and distensibility (1.5 +/- 1.0 vs 4.7 +/- 2.9 cm^2.dyne^-^1.10^-^3, P < .001) were found significantly lower in the ED group than in the control group. The relationship between ED and aortic stiffness was also significant (for aortic strain; r = -0.62, P < .001 and for aortic distensibility; r = -0.60, P < .001). Conclusion: Aortic and brachial artery functions are impaired in men with ED without cardiovascular disease or its major risk factors, indicating a more generalized vascular disease.
