Background: Clinical practice guidelines for the prevention of catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) recommend urinary catheter securement in critical patients although there is scant research on its effectiveness., Aim: To analyse whether securement of an indwelling urinary catheter (IUC) reduces the risk of CAUTI and meatal pressure injury among intensive care unit (ICU) patients and assess medical adhesive-related skin injury (MARSI) associated with the securement device., Study Design: Open randomized controlled trial involving patients admitted to two ICUs in Spain. In the intervention group (n = 169 patients), the IUC was secured to the thigh using an in-house device piloted as part of this trial. Controls (n = 181) received standard care, including non-securement of the IUC. Barrier film spray was applied to the securement site with the aim of preventing MARSI. The definitions of the main outcomes were: CAUTI was diagnosed according to the criteria of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, meatal pressure injury was categorized into four grades and MARSI was classified as either erythema or skin tears. Bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression were performed. Log-rank and Cox regressions were used to compare risk over time to CAUTI and meatal pressure injury in the two groups., Results: Data from 350 patients were analysed, 169 (48.29%) from IG and 181 (51.71%) from CG. In the multiple logistic regression analysis, IUC securement was an independent protective factor against both CAUTI (RR = 0.2, 95% CI [0.05, 0.67]) and meatal pressure injury (RR = 0.31, 95% CI [0.15, 0.58]). The incidence of MARSI was 7.1%., Conclusion: Effective IUC securement significantly reduces the risk of CAUTI and meatal pressure injury among ICU patients. The in-house device piloted in the present trial is simple for nurses to use, and the incidence of MARSI was low. Purpose: It has been proposed that reusable catheters are more cost effective and environmentally sustainable than single-use catheters intended for intermittent catheterization (IC). However, the aspect of individuals' well-being and preference for catheter type is not considered. In this study, we investigated the impact on individuals' health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) when testing a reusable catheter., Materials and Methods: The study was an open-labeled, single-arm, multicenter investigation with a treatment period of 28 days. Forty subjects using single-use hydrophilic catheters were accustomed to a reusable catheter for managing IC. HR-QoL was evaluated by the Intermittent-Self Catheterization Questionnaire (ISC-Q). Additionally, satisfaction was evaluated by the Intermittent Catheterization Satisfaction Questionnaire (InCaSa-Q). The difference in total score was analyzed using a mixed linear model. Furthermore, preference for IC (single-use vs. reusable) was assessed and microbial evaluation of the catheters was performed., Results: The total ISC-Q score measuring HR-QoL decreased significantly by 28% (p < 0.001). Two of the four subdomains (ease-of-use and discreetness) also decreased significantly (p < 0.001). The total InCaSa-score and all four subdomains evaluating satisfaction decreased significantly (p < 0.005). The primary study results were supported by the fact that 90.9% of subjects preferred to use a single-use catheter for IC. Furthermore, 50% of reusable catheters were contaminated with bacteria., Conclusion: Switching from single-use to reusable IC resulted in a significant decrease in HR-QoL and satisfaction. Moreover, the vast majority preferred the single-use catheter due to handling and convenience. Objective: To measure the force necessary to win the resistance during insertion of ureteral access sheaths (UAS) in an experimental homemade model and to compare the peak force of insertion (PFOI) of different commercially available UASs., Methods: Three investigators (2 novice and 1 expert) inserted the UASs into 2 different adapters with diameters of 10 Fr and 8 Fr. The force of insertion was continuously measured with a digital force gauge connected to the UAS during each insertion. Four different brands of UAS with different diameters, totally 11 different UASs were used for the experiment. The PFOI of each UAS was compared among each other and adapter diameters., Results: The mean PFOI in adapters 1 and 2 were 1.85 N and 5.32 N, respectively. All of the mean PFOIs were significantly lower in adapter 1 compared to adapter 2, regardless of the novice vs expert surgeons and the UASs. (P <.001) In adapter 1, the mean PFOI was lowest with the UAS-1 and highest with the UAS-8. In adapter 2, the mean PFOI was lowest with the UAS-3 and highest with the UAS-9. For adapters 1 and 2, no statistical difference was found when comparing an expert and the 2 novice surgeons., Conclusion: The PFOI during UAS placement is not solely correlated with UAS thickness and adapter diameters. Other factors such as hydrophilic coating, UAS flexibility, inner dilator properties, UAS smoothness, and the actual measured external diameter of UASs should be taken into consideration. Background: Clean intermittent self-catheterisation (CISC) with conventional eyelet catheters (CECs) is associated with urine flow-stops, which require the catheter to be repositioned so flow can resume. Flow-stops often occur because bladder mucosa is sucked into the eyelets., Aims: This investigation aimed to compare the bladder-emptying performance of the micro-hole zone catheter (MHZC) with the CEC., Methods: This was a multi-centre, randomised, open-label, controlled cross-over study with 82 women comparing the MHZC to the CEC. The endpoints relating to bladder-emptying performance included the residual volume at first flow-stop, the number of flow-stops and the proportion of successful treatment responses. The women's perception of the catheters was assessed as well as device discomfort., Findings: Catheterisations with MHZC significantly reduced the risk of flow-stops, with relative risk results showing a 2.74 times lower risk of flow-stops with a health professional-led catheterisation and a 2.52 times lower risk during self-catheterisation. There was no statistical difference in residual urine volume at first flow-stop between the two catheters. Catheterisations with the MHZC were significantly more likely to achieve zero flow-stops and a residual urine volume of <10 ml at first flow-stop. The women had a significantly more positive perception of the MHZC than the CEC in areas including handling, confidence, sensation and satisfaction., Conclusion: The MHZC enabled effective bladder emptying without catheters needing to be repositioned, supporting the women by simplifying the procedure and making them feel confident that their bladders were empty.

Transurethral catheterisation of male rats is technically difficult owing to anatomical peculiarities. In the male rat, the urethral striated sphincter consists of two lateral fascicles separated by an anterior and a posterior strip of connective tissue, which impedes the smooth insertion of a urinary catheter. For rat studies requiring continuous collection of urine, bladder irrigation, or measurement of bladder pressure, investigators either have to exclude the male population (be limited to the female population) or perform percutaneous (suprapubic) bladder puncture in male rats, which is more traumatic and invasive than transurethral catheterisation. This paper describes a novel, atraumatic method of transurethral catheterisation in the male rat, with the aid of a microscope and microsurgical instruments. Six Wistar rats were used for this experiment, all of which were catheterised successfully, with no evidence of bladder or urethral injury. The study shows that male rats can be safely catheterised via the urethra with the aid of a microscope and microsurgical instruments for both visual and tactile feedback. This is a relatively straightforward technique to learn and can allow for inclusion of male rats in future studies requiring urinary analysis or bladder irrigation, without the need for traumatic percutaneous (suprapubic) bladder puncture., Competing Interests: Competing interests The authors declare no competing or financial interests., (© 2024. A 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding developed complications from a general anesthesia resulting in sling support and recurrent urinary catheterization. The horse subsequently presented signs of dysuria and pollakiuria, was diagnosed with sabulous cystitis, and developed a urethral stricture from the repeated catheterizations, which was confirmed on urethroscopy. Clinical signs persisted despite conservative management with topical corticosteroids and urethral bougienage with balloon dilators. An image-guided approach was used to treat the stricture with a custom-made polydioxanone stent placed in the urethra after which the horse was able to void normally and fully empty his bladder. Repeat urethroscopy and ultrasonography 6 months after the procedure showed the stent to have completely reabsorbed with urethra remaining patent. Nineten months after the procedure, the owner reports the horse remaining at his intended level of athletic performance with no dysuria., (© 2024 The Author(s). Introduction: Prolonged indwelling catheter use is a known risk factor for catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTIs). We sought to reduce catheter use by creating and implementing a trial of void (TOV) algorithm to standardize indwelling Foley catheter removal in surgical patients., Methods: We partnered with the Departments of General Surgery and Nursing to develop an evidence-based TOV algorithm for a step-down unit at a large urban teaching hospital. Our cohort included patients treated with intra-abdominal, thoracic, vascular, urologic, and gynecologic surgeries. The primary outcome was mean cumulative indwelling urethral catheter patient-days. For example, if 2 patients had catheters for 3 and 7 days, respectively, then cumulative catheter days would be 10. We analyzed changes in catheter use 90 days before and after algorithm implementation., Results: The mean number of hospitalized patient-days before and after algorithm introduction did not differ (32.2 vs 32.0, P = .60). After implementation, mean cumulative catheter patient-days decreased (14.8 vs 9.9, P < .01), as did mean daily number of patients with catheters on the unit (3.7 vs 3.1, P = .02). There was 1 CAUTI before and after algorithm implementation, the latter deemed associated with algorithm nonadherence. Catheter use in a surgical floor control group where the algorithm was not implemented did not differ for any outcome over the same time period ( P > .05)., Conclusions: A multidisciplinary approach to standardize catheter care with a TOV algorithm is feasible and effective in reducing catheter use. Further research is needed to determine its impact on CAUTI rate.

Purpose: About 50% of individuals with long-term indwelling catheters are affected by catheter encrustations and bladder stone formation. Therefore, prophylaxis of catheter encrustations is important. Currently, however, neither an established prophylaxis nor a standardized in-vitro model to test different measures exist. We have therefore developed and qualitatively evaluated an in-vitro model of catheter encrustation., Methods: Size 14 French suprapubic catheters were incubated under sterile conditions at 37 degrees Celsius in five different media: (1) sterile artificial urine (n = 16), (2) artificial urine with E. coli (n = 8), (3) with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n = 8), (4) with Proteus mirabilis (n = 8), and (5) with a mix of these three strains (n = 8). Catheter balloons were inflated either a glycerine or a bactericidal solution. After 6 weeks, the catheters were removed from the solution, dried, and weighed, and a photometric determination of the retrieved encrustations was performed., Results: Most frequently and pronounced encrustations were detected in the Pseudomonas group. The median weight of these encrustations (50% struvite and brushite) was 84.4 mg (47.7 mg / 127.3 mg). Even on catheters stored in sterile urine, encrustations (69.2% struvite) were found. Bacterial growth was not affected by the medium used for catheter blockage., Conclusion: Although in-vitro models appear to be limited because they lack "the human factor", they are valuable for systematically assessing physico-chemical factors affecting encrustations. Aims: Intermittent catheters (ICs) are commonly used in bladder management, but catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) remain challenging. Insertion tips may reduce the risk of CAUTIs by minimizing bacterial transfer along the urinary tract. However, there are few laboratory tests to evaluate such technologies. We describe the use of an adapted in vitro urethra agar model to assess bacterial displacement by ICs., Methods and Results: Simulated urethra agar channels (UACs) were prepared with catheter-specific sized channels in selective media specific to the challenge organisms. UACs were inoculated with Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis before insertion of ICs, and enumeration of UAC sections was performed following insertion. Four ICs were evaluated: Cure Catheter® Closed System (CCS), VaPro Plus Pocket™, Bard® Touchless® Plus, and SpeediCath® Flex Set. CCS demonstrated significantly reduced bacterial displacement along the UACs compared to the other ICs and was also the only IC with undetectable levels of bacteria toward the end of the UAC (representing the proximal urethra)., Conclusion: The bacterial displacement test demonstrated significant differences in bacterial transfer between the test ICs with insertion tips, which may reflect their different designs. Objective: To assess the feasibility, safety, and predictive factors for the success of holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) with catheter removal and hospital discharge on the same day of the procedure., Methods: This prospective study included 34 patients who underwent HoLEP using a 60-W holmium laser device and the Wolf Piranha morcellation system. Surgeries began at 10:30 am and the patients were expected to be discharged by 5 pm on the same day. The patients underwent a voiding trial to remove the urinary catheter before hospital discharge. Functional outcomes were assessed 90 days after the procedure., Results: Mean (range) age, prostate-specific antigen value, and prostate weight were as follows: 63.4 (50-80) years, 4.81 (0.19-14) ng/mL, and 89.3 (33-258) g, respectively. The mean (range) enucleation and morcellation times were 56.2 (29-91) minutes and 14.67 (3-45) minutes, respectively. Thirty-one patients (91.1%) were discharged on the same day of the procedure after urinary catheter removal., Conclusion: The performance of HoLEP is safe on an outpatient basis. Objective: Assess the outcome of induction of labour (IOL) with a Foley catheter in pregnancies at 41 weeks in midwifery-led care setting compared to consultant-led care setting., Design: Mixed-methods cohort study at a midwifery - hospital partnership in Amsterdam, the Netherlands., Setting and Participants: Prospectively, women undergoing IOL in midwifery-led care were recruited at a secondary hospital. This group was compared to a retrospective cohort, in which IOL was exclusively performed under consultant-led care., Measurements and Findings: We compared 320 women whose induction started in midwifery-led care to a historical cohort of 320 women induced for the same reason under consultant-led care. Both groups exhibited similar rates of spontaneous vaginal births (64.2 %vs62.5 %). Caesarean section and assisted vaginal birth rates did not significantly differ. Maternal adverse outcomes were comparable, while neonatal adverse outcomes were significantly higher in the midwifery-led care group (8.1 %vs3.8 %; OR 2.27, 95 % CI 1.12-4.58). The use of pain relief was significantly lower in midwife-led care (65.3 %vs75.3 %; OR 0.62, 95 % CI 0.44-0.87). 20.6 % of births occurred in midwife-led care., Key Conclusions and Implications for Practice: In this single-centre study, spontaneous vaginal birth rates following IOL with a Foley catheter were similar between midwife- and consultant-led care. However, the midwife-led group showed a higher risk of adverse neonatal outcomes, mainly early onset neonatal sepsis, with a minority eventually delivering under midwife-led care. Intermittent catheterization (IC) utilizing conventional eyelets catheters (CECs) for bladder drainage has long been the standard of care. However, when the tissue of the lower urinary tract comes in close proximity to the eyelets, mucosal suction often occurs, resulting in microtrauma. This study investigates the impact of replacing conventional eyelets with a drainage zone featuring multiple micro-holes, distributing pressure over a larger area. Lower pressures limit the suction of surrounding tissue into these micro-holes, significantly reducing tissue microtrauma. Using an ex vivo model replicating the intra-abdominal pressure conditions of the bladder, the intra-catheter pressure was measured during drainage. When mucosal suction occurred, intra-catheter images were recorded. Subsequently affected tissue samples were investigated histologically. The negative pressure peaks caused by mucosal suction were found to be very high for the CECs, leading to exfoliation of the bladder urothelium and breakage of the urothelial barrier. However, a micro-hole zone catheter (MHZC) with a multi-eyelet drainage zone showed significantly lower pressure peaks, with over 4 times lower peak intensity, thus inducing far less extensive microtraumas. Limiting or even eliminating mucosal suction and resulting tissue microtrauma may contribute to safer catheterizations in vivo and increased patient comfort and compliance., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

The Foley catheter is one of the most commonly used devices in modern surgical practice. Developed for draining the urinary bladder, this humble catheter has been employed for many other purposes ranging from urine output monitoring to complex urological investigations. Over time, it has evolved into being applied in more complex and innovative ways in various other specialties apart from urology. In this review article, we describe some of the common and novel uses of this deceptively simple device, and discuss the scope of its application in modern medicine.

Aims: Skin breakdown is common in the intensive care unit (ICU). This pilot evaluation aimed to determine whether a nurse-constructed urinary catheter securement device using a silicone adhesive could reduce the complications of blistering and other skin breakdowns in a high-risk ICU population with Foley catheters., Design: A prospective, non-randomised performance improvement study using a convenience sample was carried out., Subjects and Setting: The study sample consisted of 29 patients with urethral Foley catheters and any degree of thigh oedema in a surgical ICU at an academic quarternary medical center., Methods: Patients were fitted with a standard acrylic-adhesive catheter securement device on one thigh and a nurse-constructed device on the contralateral thigh. At the beginning of each 12-hour shift, the nurse moved the Foley catheter from one securement device to the other; the nurse recorded the assessment findings at the end of the shift., Results: The average age of the 29 patients was 61±16 (range 20-87) years. Visible skin compromise occurred in 21% of the time with the standard acrylic securement device; an equal percentage of men and women developed skin breakdown. Oedema status was a significant factor related to skin breakdown. There was no visible damage to the skin associated with the nurse-constructed silicone-adhesive device., Conclusions: A silicone adhesive urinary catheter securement device causes less skin damage than one with acrylic adhesive. One-step application, pain-free and atraumatic removal, and reliable securement are essential considerations in product development.

In this study, we conducted a numerical analysis on catheter sizes using computational fluid dynamics to assess urinary flow rates during intermittent catheterization (IC). The results revealed that the fluid (urine) movement within a catheter is driven by intravesical pressure, with friction against the catheter walls being the main hindrance to fluid movement. Higher-viscosity fluids experienced increased friction with increasing intravesical pressure, resulting in reduced fluid velocity, whereas lower-viscosity fluids experienced reduced friction under similar pressure, leading to increased fluid velocity. Regarding urine characteristics, the results indicated that bacteriuria, with lower viscosity, exhibited higher flow rates, whereas glucosuria exhibited the lowest flow rates. Additionally, velocity gradients decreased with increasing catheter diameters, reducing friction and enhancing fluid speed, while the friction increased with decreasing diameters, reducing fluid velocity. These findings confirm that flow rates increased with larger catheter sizes. Furthermore, in terms of specific gravity, the results showed that a 12Fr catheter did not meet the ISO-suggested average flow rate (50 cc/min). The significance of this study lies in its application of fluid dynamics to nursing, examining urinary flow characteristics in catheterization. This narrative review explores the use of external urinary catheters. These devices are available in various types and materials for male and female patients. The indications for the use of external urinary catheters include managing incontinence linked to overactive bladder and neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction. Contraindications to the use of external urinary catheters include urinary obstruction. Proper skin care and proactive infection control measures are necessary to prevent complications. The collection of a urine specimen for culture requires a standardized technique to prevent contamination. Background: Previous studies had found that the mechanical methods were as effective as pharmacological methods in achieving vaginal delivery. However, whether balloon catheter induction is suitable for women with severe cervical immaturity and whether it will increase the related risks still need to be further explored., Research Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Foley catheter balloon for labor induction at term in primiparas with different cervical scores., Methods: A total of 688 primiparas who received cervical ripening with a Foley catheter balloon were recruited in this study. They were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 (Bishop score ≤ 3) and Group 2 (3 < Bishop score < 7). Detailed medical data before and after using of balloon were faithfully recorded., Results: The cervical Bishop scores of the two groups after catheter placement were all significantly higher than those before (Group 1: 5.49 ± 1.31 VS 2.83 ± 0.39, P<0.05; Group 2: 6.09 ± 1.00 VS 4.45 ± 0.59, P<0.05). The success rate of labor induction in group 2 was higher than that in group 1 (P<0.05). The incidence of intrauterine infection in Group 1 was higher than that in Group 2 (18.3% VS 11.3%, P<0.05)., Conclusion: The success rates of induction of labor by Foley catheter balloon were different in primiparas with different cervical conditions, the failure rate of induction of labor and the incidence of intrauterine infection were higher in primiparas with severe cervical immaturity., (© 2024. Clean intermittent self-catheterisation is a common procedure undertaken by people with bladder dysfunction. However, it is not without its complications, the main one being urinary tract infection. The most common causes of urinary tract infections are poor hygiene, technique and adherence, excessive post-void residual urine and bladder trauma. A catheter with new Micro-hole Zone Technology has been developed, which can potentially improve bladder emptying and minimise these complications. A case study is used to illustrate its effects in practice.

Urinary leakage is prevalent in men. To contain and manage this leakage, men are often advised about urinary devices. However, sometimes this advice does not include penile sheaths. Penile sheaths are a good way of managing urinary leakage if an individual is suitable for sheaths. This article will explore this suitability, advantages to using a sheath, reasons why sheaths may not be suitable, and will discuss optimum fitting to ensure the sheath is a secure drainage device.

Objective: To compare Foley catheter insertion by digital blind method to its placement with a sterile speculum in women with unripe cervix for induction of labor., Methods: A systematic search was conducted in Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) from inception to July 2023. Included studies compared digital to speculum placement of the Foley catheter for labor induction. Data from the included studies were extracted and pooled using RevMan software for meta-analysis. The primary outcome was pain score during the procedure measured by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes included Foley catheter insertion duration, cesarean delivery rate, induction to delivery interval, Bishop score, need for other cervical ripening methods, maternal satisfaction, and maternal fever., Results: Four RCTs involving a total of 600 patients met the inclusion criteria. Pain during the procedure and Foley catheter insertion duration were significantly reduced in the digital insertion group compared to the speculum-guided group (p < 0.05). The Bishop score showed a significant improvement in the digital Foley catheter placement group. However, there were no statistically significant differences in the cesarean delivery rate or the requirement for additional cervical ripening methods between the two groups. Maternal satisfaction with the delivery process was significantly improved in the digital insertion group (p < 0.001). Induction to delivery interval and maternal fever were comparable between both groups., Conclusions: Digital placement of Foley catheter can be considered as an alternative to the sterile speculum method for pre-induction cervical ripening. Objectives: To investigate factors associated with symptomatic urinary tract infection (sUTI) in persons with chronic spinal cord lesion (SCL) who were using single-use catheters for intermittent self-catheterization (ISC)., Methods: Among respondents to an internet survey on the burden of illness on persons with SCL who were considered to be able to perform ISC, 111 persons using single-use catheters were included to examine factors associated with self-reported sUTI by univariate as well as multivariable analysis., Results: The incidence of sUTI was significantly higher in males than in females (56.9% vs. 31.6%, p = .011), persons with stocks of antibiotics than those without it (82.9% vs. 28.6%, p < .011), and persons with more frequent bleeding during catheterization than those with less frequent bleeding (100% vs. 46.5%, p = .036). The incidence did not significantly differ between respective groups when various variables were evaluated by other characteristics of the participants, adherence to ISC procedures, and complications. Background: Foley catheter insertion is frequently used for cervical ripening during the induction of labor. However, the insertion failure, safety, maternal side effects, complications, and satisfaction of digital compared with speculum-guided Foley catheter placement have not been evaluated in a large trial involving primigravida., Objective: The study aimed to compare the insertion failure rate of digital and speculum-based transcervical Foley catheter placement in primigravida. The co-primary outcome was insertion-associated pain. The secondary outcomes were the time required for successful insertion, maternal satisfaction, and maternal complications within 24 hours of Foley insertion., Study Design: This randomized, open-label, parallel-arm, noninferiority clinical trial was performed in a large tertiary care university hospital. Primigravida aged >18 years with term gestation (≥37 weeks) were included in this study. Additional inclusion criteria for enrollment in this study were singleton pregnancy with a cephalic presentation, intact membrane, a Bishop score of ≤5, and reassuring preinduction fetal heart rate tracing. All women planned for cervical ripening were assessed for eligibility and were randomized into digital or speculum arms. Foley catheter insertion was performed in a supine lithotomy position. Vaginal and cervical cleaning were performed before insertion. A 22-French Foley balloon catheter was guided digitally or via speculum to position the bulb at the level of the internal os using water-soluble lubricant. Insertion-associated pain was measured using a visual numeric rating scale, and maternal satisfaction was assessed using a set of questions., Results: Four hundred and sixty-nine pregnant women were assessed for eligibility, and 446 patients were enrolled and randomized. The median age of the parturients was 24 (19-40) and 24 (18-38) years, respectively. The body mass index, gestational age at randomization, the incidence of postdated pregnancy, and prerandomization Bishop scores were comparable. Insertion failure was observed in 24 (10.8%) and 17 (7.6%) women in digital and speculum arms, respectively (relative risk=1.41 [95% confidence interval, 0.78-2.55]; P=.25). Requirements of >1 attempt (5.4% vs 3.6%) followed by the change in hands (3.6% vs 2.7%) were the most common reasons for insertion failure. The median (interquartile range) visual numeric rating scale was comparable (6 [2-9] vs 5 [2-10]; P=.15). The time taken for successful insertion was similar (58 [12-241] vs 54 [10-281]; P=.30). 9.4% and 10.8% of women required additional methods of cervical ripening. More women in the speculum group (41.7% vs 33.2%; P=.06) felt a medium level of discomfort than the digital group., Conclusion: Insertion failure and insertion-related pain in the digital approach were comparable to the speculum-guided approach for transcervical Foley catheter insertion in primigravida for cervical ripening. Polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) can be described as the main coating. After heating and curing, it is able to build a strong adhesion to the latex catheter for creating a durable and effective hydrophilic coating. In this study, we aim to explore the advantages and disadvantages of the new super lubricath latex catheter PVP coating compared with the common latex catheter. 148 patients who participated in the study were completely randomly divided into two groups, the observation group and the control group. When the urinary catheter was incubated, indwelling in subjects' body, and removed from the subjects, the researchers accordingly recorded the subjects' comfort feedback, device safety evaluation and the patient's vital signs, relevant blood and urine examination index, electrocardiogram (ECG) changes and recorded various adverse events. PVP super lubricath coating latex catheter offered better comfort, less damage to the urethra, and no significant disadvantage in safety compared to regular latex catheters, improving quality of care and patient satisfaction compared to regular latex urinary catheters.

Background: Approximately 15% of patients with colorectal cancer present with locally advanced tumors (T4 stage). Laparoscopic surgery for stage T4 disease has not yet been established. The near-infrared ray catheter fluorescent ureteral catheter (NIRFUC) is a new device that uses near-infrared fluorescence resin. We examined the utility of fluorescence ureteral navigation (FUN) with the NIRFUC during laparoscopic surgery for stage T4 colorectal cancer., Materials and Methods: Patients with stage T4 colorectal cancer (n = 143, from January 2017 to March 2021) were divided into a T4FUN + group, in which the NIRFUC was used (n = 21), and a T4FUN- group, in which the NIRFUC was not used (n = 122). Short-term outcomes were compared between the groups. Next, the laparoscopic surgery rate and incidence of ureteral injury from January 2017 to March 2021 were compared between the T4FUN- group and the non-stage T4FUN- group (n = 434, from January 2017 to March 2021), in which fluorescence ureter navigation was not used., Results: Rectal cancer, stage T4b disease, and invasion into the urinary tract were observed more often in the T4FUN + group than in the T4FUN- group. In the comparisons of the T4FUN + versus T4FUN- groups, the operative time was 398 (161-1090) vs. 256 (93-839) minutes, the blood loss was 10 (1-710) vs. 25 (0-1360) ml, and the ratio of laparoscopic surgery to open surgery was 21:0 vs. 79:43. Postoperative complications (Clavien-Dindo grade ≥ III) were present in 2 (10%; 0 ureteral injury) patients in the T4FUN + group and 13 (11%; 2 ureteral injury) patients in the T4FUN- group. In the T4FUN + group, the operative time was longer (p < 0.0001), but the laparoscopic ratio was higher (p = 0.0002), and the blood loss volume and incidence of ureteral injury tended to be lower. In the comparisons of the T4FUN- versus non-stage T4FUN- groups, the ratio of laparoscopic surgery to open surgery was 79:43 vs. 384:50, the incidence of open conversion was 8 (6.6%) vs. 15 (3.5%), and the incidence of ureteral injury was 2 (1.6%) vs. 0 (0%). In the T4FUN- group, the open surgery rate (<0.0001), open conversion rate (p = 0.0205) and incidence of ureteral injury (p = 0.0478) were high, with a significant difference observed between the groups., Conclusion: Patients with stage T4 disease have an increased risk of ureteral injury and are more likely to be converted to open surgery. FUN can help to safely increase the laparoscopic surgery rate while safely visualizing the ureter. Purpose: Microscopic hematuria is one of the most common office consults for urologists. While revised guidelines have risk-stratified patients to reduce unnecessary screening, they do not provide guidance concerning specimen quality. We sought to define "properly collected" specimens using catheterized urine samples as a reference to improve the utility of hematuria screening in women., Materials and Methods: We prospectively acquired same-visit voided and catheterized urine samples from 46 women referred for microscopic hematuria from September 2016 to March 2020. Characteristics of pre-referral urinalysis were compared to the matched specimens. True microscopic hematuria was defined as ≥3 red blood cells per high power field on catheterization., Results: Catheterized urinalyses had significantly fewer red blood and squamous epithelial cells in comparison to both referral urinalyses (p=0.006, p=0.001, respectively) and same-day void urinalyses (p=0.02, p=0.04, respectively). As no catheterized sample had >2 squamous epithelial cells, we applied this squamous epithelial cell threshold to referral urinalyses for analysis. Addition of this criterion for "properly collected specimen" increased the positive predictive value of referral urinalyses from 46.1% to 68.8% for true microscopic hematuria. Fewer than 2 squamous epithelial cells with elevated RBC was a significant predictor for true microscopic hematuria (p=0.003)., Conclusions: Voided specimens in the urology clinic had significantly lower red blood cells than referral samples, indicating improved collection technique may reduce false positive urinalyses. Matched collection suggested that repeat collection by catheterization in women who present with >2 squamous epithelial cells per high power field on referral urinalysis may prevent unnecessary future work-up.

Background: When antegrade ureteral intervention fails due to severe ureteral stricture or tortuosity, a longer sheath can be used to facilitate ureteral catheterization., Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the use of a long sheath in antegrade ureteral stent placement after failure of antegrade ureteral stent placement using a short sheath., Material and Methods: Among 1284 procedures in 934 patients who received ureteral stent placement, a long sheath was used after stricture negotiation failure using a short sheath in 57 (4.4%) procedures in 53 patients. The data of these 53 patients were retrospectively reviewed., Results: The most common reasons for long sheath use were failure of balloon catheter (59.6%) or guidewire (29.8%) advancement across the stricture. Technical success, successful stricture negotiation after using a long sheath, was achieved in 50/57 (87.7%) procedures. In two of seven failed procedures, an additional TIPS sheath was used and the technical success rate improved to 91.2% (52/57). The technical success rate was significantly higher in the patients who have failed balloon catheter advancement (97.1%, 33/34) than the patients who have failed guidewire advancement (64.7%, 11/17) (Fisher's exact test, P  = 0.004). Self-limiting hematoma occurred in one patient after use of the long sheath and was considered a minor complication., Conclusion: Ureteral catheterization using a long sheath is feasible and effective when antegrade ureteral intervention using a short sheath fails. When using a long sheath, the technical success rate was higher when advancing the balloon catheter over the guidewire than when advancing the guidewire through tight stricture.

Background: Guidelines for urinary catheterization in patients with hip fracture recommend limiting catheter use and using intermittent catheterization preferentially to avoid complications such as urinary tract infection (UTI) and postoperative urinary retention (POUR). We aimed to compare current practices to clinical guidelines, describe the incidence of POUR and UTI, and determine factors that increase the risk of these complications., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of patients with hip fracture who presented to a single large tertiary care centre in southeastern Ontario between November 2015 and October 2017. Data collected included comorbidities, catheter use and length of stay. We compared catheter use to guidelines, and investigated the incidence of and risk factors for POUR and UTI., Results: We reviewed the charts of 583 patients, of whom 450 (77.2%) were treated with a catheter, primarily indwelling (416 [92.4%]). Postoperative urinary retention developed in 98 patients (16.8%); however, it did not affect length of stay ( p = 0.2). Patients with indwelling catheters for more than 24 hours after surgery had a higher incidence of POUR than those who had their catheter removed before 24 hours (65/330 [19.7%] v. 10/98 [10.2%]) (odds ratio [OR] 2.2, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06-4.38). A UTI developed postoperatively in 62 patients (10.6%). Catheter use was associated with a 6.6-fold increased risk of UTI (OR 6.6, 95% CI 2.03-21.4). Patients with indwelling catheters did not have a significantly higher incidence of UTI than those with intermittent catheterization (57/416 [13.7%] v. 2/34 [5.9%]) ( p = 0.2). Patients who developed a UTI had significantly longer catheter use than patients who did not ( p < 0.002)., Conclusion: Indwelling catheters were used frequently, which suggests low compliance with clinical guidelines. Longer duration of catheter use led to higher rates of UTI and POUR. Purpose: Prophylactic antibiotics are routinely given at the time of catheter removal post-radical prostatectomy (RP). The low rate of infectious complications entails that large sample sizes are required for randomized controlled trials, a challenge given the cost of standard randomized controlled trials. We evaluated infectious complications associated with 1 vs 3 days of prophylactic antibiotics at the time of catheter removal post-RP using a novel, clinically integrated trial with randomization at the surgeon level., Materials and Methods: Surgeons were cluster randomized for periods of 3 months to prescribe 1-day vs 3-day regimen of prophylactic antibiotics at the time of catheter removal. The primary end point was an infectious complication as routinely captured by nursing phone call within 10 days of catheter removal and defined as positive urine cultures (≥10 5 CFU) and at least 1 of the following symptoms: fever (>38°C), urgency, frequency, dysuria or suprapubic tenderness., Results: A total of 824 patients were consented and underwent RP with, respectively, 389 and 435 allocated to 1-day and 3-day antibiotics, predominantly ciprofloxacin. Accrual was achieved within 3 years: 95% vs 88% of patients received the allocated 3-day vs 1-day antibiotic regimen. There were 0 urinary tract infections (0%) in the 1-day regimen and 3 urinary tract infections (0.7%) in the 3-day regimen, meeting our prespecified criterion for declaring the 1-day regimen to be noninferior., Conclusions: A clinically integrated trial using cluster randomization accrued rapidly with no important logistical problems and negligible burden on surgeons. If surgeons choose to prescribe empiric prophylactic antibiotics after catheter removal following RP, then the duration should not exceed 1 day.

Background: Urinary catheterisation is a common procedure, with approximately 15% to 25% of all people admitted to hospital receiving short-term (14 days or less) indwelling urethral catheterisation at some point during their care. However, the use of urinary catheters is associated with an increased risk of developing urinary tract infection. Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is one of the most common hospital-acquired infections. It is estimated that around 20% of hospital-acquired bacteraemias arise from the urinary tract and are associated with mortality of around 10%. This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in 2005 and last published in 2007., Objectives: To assess the effects of strategies for removing short-term (14 days or less) indwelling catheters in adults., Search Methods: We searched the Cochrane Incontinence Specialised Register, which contains trials identified from CENTRAL, MEDLINE, MEDLINE In-Process, MEDLINE Epub Ahead of Print, CINAHL, ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO ICTRP, and handsearching of journals and conference proceedings (searched 17 March 2020), and reference lists of relevant articles., Selection Criteria: We included all randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-RCTs that evaluated the effectiveness of practices undertaken for the removal of short-term indwelling urethral catheters in adults for any reason in any setting., Data Collection and Analysis: Two review authors performed abstract and full-text screening of all relevant articles. At least two review authors independently performed risk of bias assessment, data abstraction and GRADE assessment., Main Results: We included 99 trials involving 12,241 participants. We judged the majority of trials to be at low or unclear risk of selection and detection bias, with a high risk of performance bias. We also deemed most trials to be at low risk of attrition and reporting bias. None of the trials reported on quality of life. The majority of participants across the trials had undergone some form of surgical procedure. Thirteen trials involving 1506 participants compared the removal of short-term indwelling urethral catheters at one time of day (early morning removal group between 6 am to 7 am) versus another (late night removal group between 10 pm to midnight). Catheter removal late at night may slightly reduce the risk of requiring recatheterisation compared with early morning (RR 0.71, 95% CI 0.53 to 0.96; 10 RCTs, 1920 participants; low-certainty evidence). We are uncertain if there is any difference between early morning and late night removal in the risk of developing symptomatic CAUTI (RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.61 to 1.63; 1 RCT, 41 participants; very low-certainty evidence). We are uncertain whether the time of day makes a difference to the risk of dysuria (RR 2.20; 95% CI 0.70 to 6.86; 1 RCT, 170 participants; low-certainty evidence). Sixty-eight trials involving 9247 participants compared shorter versus longer durations of catheterisation. Shorter durations may increase the risk of requiring recatheterisation compared with longer durations (RR 1.81, 95% CI 1.35 to 2.41; 44 trials, 5870 participants; low-certainty evidence), but probably reduce the risk of symptomatic CAUTI (RR 0.52, 95% CI 0.45 to 0.61; 41 RCTs, 5759 participants; moderate-certainty evidence) and may reduce the risk of dysuria (RR 0.42, 95% CI 0.20 to 0.88; 7 RCTs; 1398 participants; low-certainty evidence). Seven trials involving 714 participants compared policies of clamping catheters versus free drainage. There may be little to no difference between clamping and free drainage in terms of the risk of requiring recatheterisation (RR 0.82, 95% CI 0.55 to 1.21; 5 RCTs; 569 participants; low-certainty evidence). We are uncertain if there is any difference in the risk of symptomatic CAUTI (RR 0.99, 95% CI 0.60 to 1.63; 2 RCTs, 267 participants; very low-certainty evidence) or dysuria (RR 0.84, 95% CI 0.46 to 1.54; 1 trial, 79 participants; very low-certainty evidence). Three trials involving 402 participants compared the use of prophylactic alpha blockers versus no intervention or placebo. We are uncertain if prophylactic alpha blockers before catheter removal has any effect on the risk of requiring recatheterisation (RR 1.18, 95% CI 0.58 to 2.42; 2 RCTs, 184 participants; very low-certainty evidence) or risk of symptomatic CAUTI (RR 0.20, 95% CI 0.01 to 4.06; 1 trial, 94 participants; very low-certainty evidence). None of the included trials investigating prophylactic alpha blockers reported the number of participants with dysuria., Authors' Conclusions: There is some evidence to suggest the removal of indwelling urethral catheters late at night rather than early in the morning may reduce the number of people who require recatheterisation. It appears that catheter removal after shorter compared to longer durations probably reduces the risk of symptomatic CAUTI and may reduce the risk of dysuria. However, it may lead to more people requiring recatheterisation. The other evidence relating to the risk of symptomatic CAUTI and dysuria is too uncertain to allow us to draw any conclusions. Due to the low certainty of the majority of the evidence presented here, the results of further research are likely to change our findings and to have a further impact on clinical practice. This systematic review has highlighted the need for a standardised set of core outcomes, which should be measured and reported by all future trials comparing strategies for the removal of short-term urinary catheters. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are among the leading nosocomial infections in the world and have led to the extensive study of various strategies to prevent infection. However, despite an abundance of anti-infection materials having been studied over the last forty-five years, only a few types have come into clinical use, providing an insignificant reduction in CAUTIs. In recent decades, marine resources have emerged as an unexplored area of opportunity offering huge potential in discovering novel bioactive materials to combat human diseases. Some of these materials, such as antimicrobial compounds and biosurfactants synthesized by marine microorganisms, exhibit potent antimicrobial, antiadhesive and antibiofilm activity against a broad spectrum of uropathogens (including multidrug-resistant pathogens) that could be potentially used in urinary catheters to eradicate CAUTIs. This paper summarizes information on the most relevant materials that have been obtained from marine-derived microorganisms over the last decade and discusses their potential as new agents against CAUTIs, providing a prospective proposal for researchers.

Background: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to assess whether a urinary catheter is necessary for all patients in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA)., Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). All RCTs were compared with receive either an indwelling urinary catheter or no urinary catheter in TKA. Primary outcomes were urinary retention and urinary tract infection. Secondary outcomes were the length of stay, duration of the surgery, and the first urination time., Results: A total of 6 RCTs involving 1334 patients were included in the meta-analysis. No significant difference between the 2 groups was found in urinary retention (P = .52), length of stay (P = .38), duration of the surgery (P = .55). However, patients with an indwelling catheter were associated with a higher risk of urinary tract infections and longer time for the first urination than patients without indwelling catheters (P = .009 and P = .004)., Conclusion: The available evidence indicates that patients without using the indwelling catheters could reduce urinary tract infections and the time for the first urination, without increase in the incidence of urinary retention in primary TKA., Level of Evidence: Level I, therapeutic study., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflicts of interest to disclose., (Copyright © 2021 the Author(s). Foley urinary catheters were coated by chlorhexidine-loaded micelles and chlorhexidine-loaded nanospheres. In our prior study, the nanocoating of Foley urinary catheter was investigated for chlorhexidine-release study, degradation, antibacterial evaluation, and cytotoxicity assessment. These studies presented the 1 month antibacterial property of nanocoating deposited via the layers of micelles and nanospheres. In this study, we evaluated the biocompatibility of these catheters, including hemocompatibility, skin irritation, skin sensitization, and stability during the age of coated urinary catheter. Results demonstrated that coated urinary catheters presented slight hemolysis, whereas skin irritation on rabbit and skin sensitization on Dunkin Hartley guinea pig showed no signs of dermal toxicity, which indicated that inflammation, redness, and swelling did not occur. Moreover, the stability of coated urinary catheters during storage indicated no change in chlorhexidine peaks by high performance liquid chromatography. This paper sets out the rationale and design for a more physiologically representative bladder/urethral model than the current rigid funnel industry standard. We suggest this flexible model can better serve as a basis for evaluating new catheters. We investigated the parameters and the validation tests required to construct and test with more flexible materials. The protocol includes static and impact force tests, while measuring internal retention balloon pressure. We have designed a flexible elastomer bladder floor and urethral model and tested it with a Foley balloon catheter. The tests showed that the model could hold the catheter with static loads up to 0.7 kg, but that the catheter was pulled out by impact forces from dropped weights. The Foley catheter design and its associated standards make no provision to mitigate urethral injury in the surprisingly common event of removal with a filled balloon. Our design is a more realistic model for testing retention and extraction characteristics of a urethral catheter. Validation tests have confirmed the feasibility of measuring urethral dilation and balloon pressure, both under traction and during progressive deflation. We suggest this model improves upon the current standard tests and will enable the design of safer catheters.

Background: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are among the most frequent healthcare-associated infections in the world. They are associated with increased mortality, prolonged hospital stay and increased healthcare costs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the noble metal alloy (NMA) coated BIP Foley Catheter in preventing the incidence of symptomatic CAUTI in a large cohort of patients in India., Methods: This multi-center, prospective study included 1000 adult patients admitted to six hospitals across India for urology, surgery and ICU requiring urethral catheterization and admission for ≥ 48 h. Patients were allocated to the NMA-coated BIP Foley Catheter group or a non-coated control catheter group, with a randomization ratio of 3:1. CAUTI surveillance was conducted at study entry, upon catheter removal, and 2 days after catheter removal. For statistical analysis, categorical data (e.g. gender) were compared using the chi-square or Fischer test, and numerical data were compared using the two-sample t-test. Associations were evaluated using logistic regression., Results and Conclusions: The incidence of symptomatic CAUTI was reduced by 69% in the BIP Foley Catheter group compared to the control group (6.5 vs 20.8 CAUTI/1000 catheter days), with an incidence rate ratio of 0.31 (95% confidence interval: 0.21-0.46; p < 0.001). A reduction in the cumulative CAUTI incidence was evident in the BIP Foley Catheter group within 3 days after catheterization; this reduction was maintained up to ~ 30 days, and the largest reductions were seen between 3 and 11 days. There were no serious adverse events related to either catheter, and the percentage of patients with ≥ 1 adverse event was significantly lower in the NMA-coated BIP Foley Catheter group than in the control group (21.6% vs. 48.4%; p = 0.001). In conclusion, the NMA-coated BIP Foley Catheter was effective in reducing CAUTI and was well tolerated, with a lower incidence of adverse events compared to the uncoated catheter. The effect of preoperative Double-J (DJ) ureteral stenting before flexible ureterorenoscopy (FURS) in the treatment for urinary stones was evaluated. We retrospectively enrolled 306 consecutive patients who underwent FURS from Jan. 2014 to Dec. 2017. All the patients were classified into two groups according to whether they had DJ ureteral stenting before FURS. Baseline characteristics (age, sex, stone location, stone size, surgical success rate, operation time, stone-free rate of the first day after surgery, stone-free rate of the first month after surgery, total complication rate) were compared using Chi-square test for categorical variables and Kruskal-Wallis test for continuous variables. In total, 306 patients were included in this study. The group of DJ stenting before FURS included 203 (66.3%) patients, and non-DJ stenting before FURS was observed in 103 (33.7%) patients. The group of DJ stenting before FURS was significantly associated with a shorter operation time (53.8 vs. 59.3 min, P<0.001), a higher stone-free rate of the first day after surgery (69.0% vs. 51.5%, P=0.003). However, statistical significant differences were not found in the age, sex, stone location, stone size, surgical success rate, stone-free rate of the first month after surgery (89.2% vs. 81.6%, P=0.065) and total complication rate (5.4% vs. 9.7%, P=0.161) between the two groups. Preoperative DJ ureteral stenting before FURS could reduce the operation time and increase stone-free rate of the first day after surgery. However, it might not benefit the stone-free rate of the first month after surgery and reduce the complication rate. Preoperative DJ stenting should be not routinely performed.

Catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD) associated with intraoperative urinary catheterization is a distressing symptom during recovery from anesthesia. Anticholinergics have been used to manage CRBD. Chlorpheniramine maleate (CPM) is a first-generation antihistamine, which also has anticholinergic effects. This study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of CPM in preventing CRBD. Seventy-six adults (19-65 years old) with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I, II, or III of either sex, undergoing elective ureteroscopic stone removal under general anesthesia were randomized into one of two groups (each n = 38). Group C (control) received a placebo, and group CPM received 8 mg of intravenous CPM before the induction of anesthesia. CRBD was assessed upon arrival in the post-anesthetic care unit at 0, 1, 2, and 6 h. The severity of CRBD was graded as none, mild, moderate, and severe. Tramadol was administered when the severity of CRBD was more than moderate. The incidence rate and overall severity of CRBD did not differ between the groups at any of the time points ( р > 0.05). The incidence of moderate CRBD was higher in group C than in group CPM only at 0 h (26.3% vs. 5.3%, р = 0.025). However, fewer patients in the CPM group required rescue tramadol to relieve CRBD after surgery (31.6% vs. 60.5%, р = 0.011). Purpose: Our primary objective was to determine the incidence of extravasation on imaging at the time of catheter removal after ventral onlay buccal mucosal graft urethroplasty., Materials and Methods: This is a single center retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent ventral onlay buccal mucosal graft bulbar urethroplasty from 2007 to 2017. Patients with imaging at the time of catheter removal were included. Urethroplasty success was defined as the ability to pass a 17Fr cystoscope at the time of followup cystoscopy., Results: A total of 229 patients met the inclusion criteria, including 110 with a ventral onlay buccal mucosal graft and 119 with an augmented anastomotic urethroplasty with a mean stricture length of 4.4 cm. Imaging consisted of a voiding cystourethrogram in 210 and retrograde urethrogram in 19 patients at a median of 21.7 days after surgery. The incidence of extravasation was 3.1% (7/229). Of patients who had a documented followup cystoscopy (60%, 137/229), those with extravasation on imaging had a worse urethroplasty success rate (60%, 3/5) compared to those who did not (94%, 117/130) (p=0.047). On multivariate analysis those who had 5 or more endoscopic interventions were 9.6 times more likely to demonstrate extravasation (OR 9.6, p=0.0080)., Conclusions: The incidence of radiological extravasation after ventral onlay using a single buccal mucosal graft, with or without augmented anastomotic urethroplasty, is 3.1%. Given this low rate it is reasonable to omit routine imaging at the time of Foley removal in this population. It appears that extravasation may be associated with a worse cystoscopic patency rate but does not lead to more complications.

Objective: The objective of this study was to identify differences in voiding trial success rates between delayed (postoperative day 1) and day of surgery catheter removal ("fast track") among women undergoing benign gynecologic surgery. Rates of urinary tract infection, patient satisfaction, and lower urinary tract symptoms were compared between catheter management schemes., Methods: Women undergoing benign gynecologic surgery were randomized to either "conventional" delayed urinary catheter care removal on postoperative day 1 or day of surgery catheter removal (fast track) 4 hours after surgery. Subjects were asked to complete a brief survey recording bladder function before and during their hospitalization and satisfaction with their catheter management. Subjects were contacted by phone 2 to 3 weeks after the index surgery to survey their bladder function including symptoms (eg, dysuria) or treatment indicative of a bladder infection., Results: The median dwell time for Foley catheters in the "fast-track" group was 8.15 hours (SD = 375 minutes), whereas the median dwell time in the conventional group was 20.6 hours (SD = 265 minutes), which was significantly different (P < 0.001). Overall, 153 (93%) patients passed their voiding trial with significantly more patients passing their voiding trial in the conventional management group (P = 0.01). There was no difference in the Urogenital Distress Inventory scores at 2 weeks between catheter management cohorts (P = 0.81)., Conclusions: Foley dwell time is significantly reduced in the fast-track cohort. Voiding trial failure is higher with same-day catheter removal but that rate of failure rate is low.
