In many clinical conditions, such as head trauma, stroke, and low cardiac output states, the brain is at risk for hypoxic-ischemic injury. The metabolic rate and oxygen consumption of the brain are reflected in internal jugular venous oxygen saturation (sijvO2). The current gold standard for monitoring brain oxygenation is invasive; it requires jugular vein catheterization under fluoroscopic guidance and therefore is rarely used. Photoacoustic (PA) measurement, on the other hand, can estimate the oxygen consumption of the brain non-invasively in real time. Such a convenient method can potentially aid earlier detection and prevention of impending hypoxic brain injury. A dual-wavelength photoacoustic tomography (PAT) and ultrasound imaging (US) system was used to image the internal jugular vein (IJV) and estimate the sijvO2 in seven healthy volunteers. The system captured simultaneous co-registered PAT and US images at a rate of five frames per second. For each volunteer, the internal jugular vein was identified under ultrasound guidance, then, additional PA images from two optical wavelengths were collected and used to estimate the oxygen saturation of the internal jugular vein. For each volunteer, the oxygen saturation was calculated from transverse and longitudinal views of the internal jugular vein. The average sijvO2 was 72 +/- 7 %. The preliminary results are encouraging and agree with those reported in the literature. Photoacoustic images were successfully used to calculate the blood hemoglobin oxygen saturation in the internal jugular vein. These results raise confidence that this emerging technology can be used clinically for accurate, noninvasive estimation of sijvO2. In addition, the fast co-registration with US images makes the technique suitable for studying the temporal variations of oxygen saturation in response to physiologic challenges in clinical settings.

In \cite{GUW} we introduced a class of "semi-classical functions of isotropic type", starting with a model case and applying Fourier integral operators associated with canonical transformations. These functions are a substantial generalization of the "oscillatory functions of Lagrangian type" that have played major role in semi-classical and micro-local analysis. In this paper we exhibit more clearly the nature of these isotropic functions by obtaining oscillatory integral expressions for them. Then we use these to prove that the classes of isotropic functions are equivariant with respect to the action of general FIOs (under the usual clean-intersection hypothesis). The simplest examples of isotropic states are the "coherent states", a class of oscillatory functions that has played a pivotal role in mathematics and theoretical physics beginning with their introduction by of Schr\"odinger in the 1920's. We prove that every oscillatory function of isotropic type can be expressed as a superposition of coherent states, and examine some implications of that fact. We also show that certain functions of elliptic operators have isotropic functions for Schwartz kernels. This lead us to a result on an eigenvalue counting function that appears to be new (Corollary \ref{cor:altWeyl}).

We apply a quantum version of dimensional reduction to Gaussian coherent states in Bargmann space to obtain squeezed states on complex projective spaces. This leads to a definition of a family of squeezed spin states with excellent semi-classical properties, governed by a symbol calculus. We consider non-self-adjoint Schr\"odinger operators $\Delta+V$ where $\Delta$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a Zoll manifold $X$ and $V\in C^\infty(X,\mathbb C)$. We obtain asymptotic results on the pseudo-spectrum and numerical range of such operators., Comment: 14 pages

We consider Berezin-Toeplitz operators whose multipliers are compactly supported densities carried by a submanifold of ${\mathbb C}^N$ . We compute asymptotically the moments of their spectral measures, and we prove Szeg\"o limit theorems in cases when the submanifold is isotropic or co-isotropic, from which Weyl estimates follow. We also obtain asymptotics of the Schatten norms of such operators. Rescaled versions of these operators can be thought of as quantum mechanical mixed states, and our results give the semi-classical limit of their entropy., Comment: 33 pages, 2 figures

Photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) is an emerging imaging modality that exploits optical contrast and ultrasonic detection principles to form images of the photoacoustically induced initial pressure distribution within tissue. The PACT reconstruction problem corresponds to an inverse source problem in which the initial pressure distribution is recovered from measurements of the radiated wavefield. A major challenge in transcranial PACT brain imaging is compensation for aberrations in the measured data due to the presence of the skull. Ultrasonic waves undergo absorption, scattering and longitudinal-to-shear wave mode conversion as they propagate through the skull. To properly account for these effects, a wave-equation-based inversion method should be employed that can model the heterogeneous elastic properties of the skull. In this work, a forward model based on a finite-difference time-domain discretization of the three-dimensional elastic wave equation is established and a procedure for computing the corresponding adjoint of the forward operator is presented. Massively parallel implementations of these operators employing multiple graphics processing units (GPUs) are also developed. The developed numerical framework is validated and investigated in computer-simulation and experimental phantom studies whose designs are motivated by transcranial PACT applications.

The main results of this paper are an asymptotic expansion in powers of $\hbar$ for the spectral measure $\mu_\hbar$ of a semi-classical Toeplitz operator, $Q_\hbar$, and an equivariant version of this result when $Q_\hbar$ admits an $n$-torus as a symmetry group. In addition we discuss some inverse spectral consequences of these results.

We define classes of quantum states associated to isotropic submanifolds of cotangent bundles. The classes are stable under the action of semiclassical pseudo-differential operators and covariant under the action of semiclassical Fourier integral operators. We consider a class of perturbations of the 2D harmonic oscillator, and of some other dynamical systems, which we show are isomorphic to a function of a toric system (a Birkhoff canonical form). We show that for such systems there exists a quantum normal form as well, which is determined by spectral data.

Let $(M, \omega, J)$ be a K\"ahler manifold and K its group of hamiltonian symplectomorphisms. The complexification of K introduced by Donadson is not a group, only a "formal Lie group". However it still makes sense to talk about the exponential map in the complexification. In this note we show how to construct geometrically the exponential map (for small time), in case the initial data are real-analytic. We study the direct and inverse spectral problems for semiclassical operators of the form $S = S_0 +\h^2V$, where $S_0 = \frac 12 \Bigl(-\h^2\Delta_{\bbR^n} + |x|^2\Bigr)$ is the harmonic oscillator and $V:\bbR^n\to\bbR$ is a tempered smooth function. We show that the spectrum of $S$ forms eigenvalue clusters as $\h$ tends to zero, and compute the first two associated "band invariants". We derive several inverse spectral results for $V$, under various assumptions. In particular we prove that, in two dimensions, generic analytic potentials that are even with respect to each variable are spectrally determined (up to a rotation).

In this paper we study a semiclassical heat trace expansion for perturbations of the harmonic oscillator, by adapting to the semiclassical setting techniques developed by Hitrik and Polterovich in [HP]. We are consider domains in cotangent bundles with the property that the null foliation of their boundary is fibrating and the leaves satisfy a Bohr-Sommerfeld condition (for example, the unit disk bundle of a Zoll metric). Given such a domain, we construct an algebra of associated semiclassical pseudodifferential operators with singular symbols. The Schwartz kernels of the operators have frequency set contained in the union of the diagonal and the flow-out of the null foliation of the boundary of the domain. We develop a symbolic calculus, prove the existence of projectors (under a mild additional assumption) whose range can be thought of as quantizing the domain, give a symbolic proof of a Szeg\"o limit theorem, and study associated propagators.

This paper outlines an approach to the non-abelian theta functions of the $SU(2)$-Chern-Simons theory with the methods used by A. Weil for studying classical theta functions. First we translate in knot theoretic language classical theta functions, the action of the finite Heisenberg group, and the discrete Fourier transform. Then we explain how the non-abelian counterparts of these arise in the framework of the quantum group quantization of the moduli space of flat $SU(2)$-connections on a surface, in the guise of the non-abelian theta functions, the action of a skein algebra, and the Reshetikhin-Turaev representation of the mapping class group. We prove a Stone-von Neumann theorem on the moduli space of flat $SU(2)$-connections on the torus, and using it we deduce the existence and the formula for the Reshetikhin-Turaev representation on the torus from quantum mechanical considerations. We show how one can derive in a quantum mechanical setting the skein that allows handle slides, which is the main ingredient in the construction of quantum $3$-manifold invariants.

Abelian Chern-Simons theory relates classical theta functions to the topological quantum field theory of the linking number of knots. In this paper we explain how to derive the constructs of abelian Chern-Simons theory directly from the theory of classical theta functions. It turns out that the theory of classical theta functions, from the representation theoretic point of view of A. Weil, is just an instance of Chern-Simons theory. The group algebra of the finite Heisenberg group is described as an algebra of curves on a surface, and its Schrodinger representation is obtained as an action on curves in a handlebody. A careful analysis of the discrete Fourier transform yields the Reshetikhin-Turaev formula for invariants of 3-dimensional manifolds. In this context, we give an explanation of why the composition of discrete Fourier transforms and the non-additivity of the signature of 4-dimensional manifolds under gluings obey the same formula., Comment: L.
