11. Defining Functional Illiteracy to Empower Inclusive Technology Design

Abstract

Limited literacy presents a significant challenge in HCI research, yet the field lacks consistent definitions and measurement criteria. Researchers often interchange terms such as 'functional illiterates,' 'low literates,' and 'semi-literates,' further complicating the field. This paper conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) of 33 HCI studies, revealing concerns about the absence of a definition in 41% of the studies and the lack of measurement technique in 74%. Based on the results from our SLR and relevant research beyond HCI, we propose the following work-in-progress definition. 'Functional illiterates are motivated adults with some familiarity with text but insufficient to fully comprehend meanings and low skills in the measured digital skill, with enough language proficiency in the study language if they are literate in their native language. This understanding, coupled with addressing the identified issues, will empower the HCI4D community to design more inclusive technology solutions for functionally illiterate users in developing countries.

12. Usability and User Experience of Mobile Applications:A Case of Functional Illiterates in Nigeria

Abstract

Despite the challenges faced by functional illiterates (FXI) when using smartphones, usability studies of mobile applications for FXI in Nigeria are still lacking in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research. To address this gap, we conducted a mixed (quantitative and qualitative) user study with FXI users to explore their experiences using current mobile applications for banking and shopping. Our study uses a digital skills framework (DLGF) with usability and user experience (UX) metrics to investigate user interaction, providing a novel approach to understanding users’ capabilities in HCI research. Triangulating interview data with both applications' user interface (UI) data, we found that FXI users encountered challenges in certain tasks but not all. Our findings revealed below-average UX ratings of the current mobile applications compared to established benchmarks. These findings contribute to an emerging discussion about designing more inclusive and accessible UIs. We propose that using the DLGF in usability studies can provide a more comprehensive view to all stakeholders in accessibility research.

Abstract

Social networking sites comprise an open world where anyone can share different types of information. During the Covid-19 pandemic, people's social isolation made social media particularly important, and it has emerged as an important platform for sharing health information. The credibility of the information, however, is questionable. Therefore, this study aims to understand attitudes towards using social media as an information source among social media users in Saudi Arabia. Specifically, it seeks to examine the propensity of individuals towards using health information from social media platforms and whether individuals demographic factors (such as gender) impact information adoption. Based on using an online questionnaire incorporating a novel vignette design to measure participants’ perceptions of information sources on social media platforms. The findings revealed that there is a high use of social media platforms among the Saudi population and that verified accounts on social media platforms, same gender and nationality positively affect the propensity towards adopting information.

Abstract

Feedback is a critical aspect of optimised learning design, but there are few, if any, feedback models that map different types of feedback and how they may assist students to increase performance and enhance their learning experience. This research paper outlines a feedback model as an extension of the four-dimensional framework which includes a consideration of the type, the content, the format, and the frequency of feedback, as well as the agent which delivers it. This model is based upon an understanding of learning in the context of designing learning experiences and utilises a game-based model of learning to understand the importance of motivation and autonomy in learners to enhance and accelerate learning. The framework is developed and reflected upon by analysing two cases: a medical triage case in which the timing and frequency of feedback proved critical, and a business simulation which illuminated the need for a range of types of feedback and to be aware of the possibility of different agents (instructor peer and game) that can deliver feedback. The extended model may help game and learning designers alike to discern different types of feedback, both in games and more generally, in more explicit and nuanced ways.

15. Technology readiness and the organizational journey towards AI adoption:An empirical study

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is viewed as having potential for significant economic and social impact. However, its history of boom and bust cycles can make potential adopters wary. A cross-sectional, qualitative study was carried out, with a purposive sample of AI experts from research, development and business functions, to gain a deeper understanding of the adoption process. Technology Readiness Levels were used as a benchmark against which the experts could align their experiences. A model of AI adoption is proposed which embeds an extended version of the People, Processes, Technology lens, incorporating Data. The model suggests that people, process and data readiness are required in addition to technology readiness to achieve long term operational success with AI. The findings further indicate that innovative organizations should build bridges between technical and business functions.

Abstract

Energy from Waste is being deployed in both developed and developing economies as a route to reduce dependency on fossil fuels whilst making positive use of resources which might otherwise be landfilled. Energy from Waste supply chains are complex, with a rich diversity of partners and stakeholders involved. For this purpose, the selection of appropriate criteria to guide supply chain design, and in particular the selection of suppliers, is critical for success. In this study, a three-stage process was conducted to identify, refine and validate an evidence-based model. The evidence based model proposed comprises seven categories of criteria used in the design of these supply chains, namely Economic, Environmental, Location, Operations management, which has a sub-category of Plant operation, Political/Legal and Social. The work reported here supports practitioners and researchers involved in supply chain partner selection to systematise their thinking in relation to the criteria that may impact their study or project.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being adopted in a wide range of operational settings, but many organizations are still at an early stage of adoption. This work concerns critical success factors of AI projects, and is based on interviews with professionals who have been involved in delivering them. Technology Readiness Levels were used as a surrogate for context. CSFs identified by the study include: address real, carefully scoped business problems, match the AI technology to the problem, build understanding of AI beyond the development team, invest to generate high quality data, develop data capabilities, and embed AI expertise in the organization.

Abstract

Digitalisation is a crucial enabler of servitisation, with digital capabilities allowing interaction, integration, and aligning of processes that create value for both manufacturers and customers. We report of a multi case study of digital capabilities in the UK truck manufacturing industry. The fundamental components of digital capabilities are identified as data capturing capability, connectivity capability and analytical capability.The role of digital capabilities as a resource is explored from the perspective of the Resource Based View (RBV). It was found that digital capabilities enable data-in-use and in combination facilitate value creation, offer strategic potential and sustainable competitive advantage in the collaborative service network, through visibility of operations, information exchange and effective management of field knowledge.
