Search

As evidenced by recent survey results, majority of asteroids are slow rotators (P>12 h), but lack spin and shape models due to selection bias. This bias is skewing our overall understanding of the spins, shapes, and sizes of asteroids, as well as of their other properties. Also, diameter determinations for large (>60km) and medium-sized asteroids (between 30 and 60 km) often vary by over 30% for multiple reasons. Our long-term project is focused on a few tens of slow rotators with periods of up to 60 hours. We aim to obtain their full light curves and reconstruct their spins and shapes. We also precisely scale the models, typically with an accuracy of a few percent. We used wide sets of dense light curves for spin and shape reconstructions via light-curve inversion. Precisely scaling them with thermal data was not possible here because of poor infrared data: large bodies are too bright for WISE mission. Therefore, we recently launched a campaign among stellar occultation observers, to scale these models and to verify the shape solutions, often allowing us to break the mirror pole ambiguity. The presented scheme resulted in shape models for 16 slow rotators, most of them for the first time. Fitting them to stellar occultations resolved previous inconsistencies in size determinations. For around half of the targets, this fitting also allowed us to identify a clearly preferred pole solution, thus removing the ambiguity inherent to light-curve inversion. We also address the influence of the uncertainty of the shape models on the derived diameters. Overall, our project has already provided reliable models for around 50 slow rotators. Such well-determined and scaled asteroid shapes will, e.g. constitute a solid basis for density determinations when coupled with mass information. This work aims at constraining the size, shape, and geometric albedo of the dwarf planet candidate 2002 MS4 through the analysis of nine stellar occultation events. Using multichord detection, we also studied the object's topography by analyzing the obtained limb and the residuals between observed chords and the best-fitted ellipse. We predicted and organized the observational campaigns of nine stellar occultations by 2002 MS4 between 2019 and 2022, resulting in two single-chord events, four double-chord detections, and three events with three to up to sixty-one positive chords. Using 13 selected chords from the 8 August 2020 event, we determined the global elliptical limb of 2002 MS4. The best-fitted ellipse, combined with the object's rotational information from the literature, constrains the object's size, shape, and albedo. Additionally, we developed a new method to characterize topography features on the object's limb. The global limb has a semi-major axis of 412 $\pm$ 10 km, a semi-minor axis of 385 $\pm$ 17 km, and the position angle of the minor axis is 121 $^\circ$ $\pm$ 16$^\circ$. From this instantaneous limb, we obtained 2002 MS4's geometric albedo and the projected area-equivalent diameter. Significant deviations from the fitted ellipse in the northernmost limb are detected from multiple sites highlighting three distinct topographic features: one 11 km depth depression followed by a 25$^{+4}_{-5}$ km height elevation next to a crater-like depression with an extension of 322 $\pm$ 39 km and 45.1 $\pm$ 1.5 km deep. Our results present an object that is $\approx$138 km smaller in diameter than derived from thermal data, possibly indicating the presence of a so-far unknown satellite. However, within the error bars, the geometric albedo in the V-band agrees with the results published in the literature, even with the radiometric-derived albedo.

In several spiral galaxies that are observed face-on, large-scale ordered magnetic fields (the so-called magnetic arms) were found. One of the explanations was the action of the magnetic reconnection, which leads to a higher ordering of the magnetic fields. Because it simultaneously converts the energy of the magnetic fields into thermal energy of the surroundings, magnetic reconnection has been considered as a heating mechanism of the interstellar medium for many years. Until recently, no clear observational evidence for this phenomenon was found. We search for possible signatures of gas heating by magnetic reconnection effects in the radio and X-ray data for the face-on spiral galaxy NGC628 (M74), which presents pronounced magnetic arms and evidence for vertical magnetic fields. The strengths and energy densities of the magnetic field in the spiral and magnetic arms were derived, as were the temperatures and thermal energy densities of the hot gas, for the disk and halo emission. In the regions of magnetic arms, higher order and lower energy density of the magnetic field is found than in the stellar spiral arms. The global temperature of the hot gas is roughly constant throughout the disk. The comparison of the findings with those obtained for the starburst galaxy M83 suggests that magnetic reconnection heating may be present in the halo of NGC628. The joint analysis of the properties of the magnetic fields and the hot gas in NGC628 also provided clues for possible tidal interaction with the companion galaxy., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 9 tables. Studies of nearby spiral galaxies in radio and X-ray wavelengths reveal the structure and energy balance of the magnetic fields and the hot interstellar medium (ISM). In some spiral galaxies, large-scale ordered magnetic fields have been found between the spiral stellar arms (the so-called magnetic arms). One of the considered explanations of their origin is magnetic reconnection, which according to theoretical studies can efficiently heat the low-density ISM. We present, for the first time, high-resolution C-band (5GHz) radio maps of the nearby face-on spiral galaxy M101 to study the magnetic fields and verify the existence of the magnetic arms. The analysis of the archival XMM-Newton X-ray data is performed to search for signatures of gas heating by magnetic reconnection effects in the disk and the halo of this galaxy. We combine the Very Large Array (VLA) and Effelsberg radio maps of M101 to restore the large-scale emission lost in the interferometric observations. From the obtained maps, we derive magnetic field strengths and energy densities, and compare them with the properties of the hot gas found with the spectral analysis of the X-ray data. Most of the X-ray emission likely comes from the hot gas in the halo of M101. Its temperature is highest above the massive stellar arm and an inter-arm region with enhanced polarised radio emission, as well as in the inter-arm area where neither Halpha nor HI emission is visible. In regions outside of the spiral arms lower strengths, energy densities and higher orders of the magnetic fields were observed. Although M101 does not possess well-defined magnetic arms, a rudimentary magnetic arm was identified in one of the inter-arm regions. We found weak signatures of additional heating of the ISM there, as well as in the galactic halo, which could be explained by the action of magnetic reconnection., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 11 tables. Reconnection heating has been considered as a potential source of the heating of the interstellar medium. In some galaxies, significant polarised radio emission has been found between the spiral arms. This emission has a form of `magnetic arms' that resembles the spiral structure of the galaxy. Reconnection effects could convert some of the energy of the turbulent magnetic field into the thermal energy of the surrounding medium, leaving more ordered magnetic fields, as is observed in the magnetic arms. Sensitive radio and X-ray data for the grand-design spiral galaxy M 83 are used for a detailed analysis of the possible interactions of magnetic fields with hot gas, including a search for signatures of gas heating by magnetic reconnection effects. Magnetic field strengths and energies derived from the radio emission are compared with the parameters of the hot gas calculated from the model fits to sensitive X-ray spectra of the hot gas emission. The available X-ray data allowed us to distinguish two thermal components in the halo of M 83. We found slightly higher average temperatures of the hot gas in the interarm regions, which results in higher energies per particle and is accompanied by a decrease in the energy density of the magnetic fields. The observed differences in the energy budget between the spiral arms and the interarm regions suggest that, similar to the case of another spiral galaxy NGC 6946, we may be observing hints for gas heating by magnetic reconnection effects in the interarm regions. These effects, which act more efficiently on the turbulent component of the magnetic field, are expected to be stronger in the spiral arms. Context. Studies on compact galaxy groups have led to the conclusion that a plenitude of phenomena take place in between galaxies that form them. However, radio data on these objects are extremely scarce and not much is known concerning the existence and role of the magnetic field in intergalactic space. Aims. We aim to study a small sample of galaxy groups that look promising as possible sources of intergalactic magnetic fields; for example data from radio surveys suggest that most of the radio emission is due to extended, diffuse structures in and out of the galaxies. Methods. We used the Effelsberg 100 m radio telescope at 4.85 GHz and NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) data at 1.40 GHz. After subtraction of compact sources we analysed the maps searching for diffuse, intergalactic radio emission. Spectral index and magnetic field properties were derived. Results. Intergalactic magnetic fields exist in groups HCG 15 and HCG 60, whereas there are no signs of them in HCG 68. There are also hints of an intergalactic bridge in HCG 44 at 4.85 GHz. Conclusions. Intergalactic magnetic fields exist in galaxy groups and their energy density may be comparable to the thermal (X-ray) density, suggesting an important role of the magnetic field in the intra-group medium, wherever it is detected., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a multiwavelength radio study of the nearby galaxy pair Arp 269 (NGC 4490/85). High sensitivity to extended structures gained by using the merged interferometric and single- dish maps allowed us to reveal a previously undiscovered extension of the radio continuum emission. Its direction is significantly different from that of the neutral gas tail, suggesting that different physical processes might be involved in their creation. The population of radio- emitting electrons is generally young, signifying an ongoing, vigorous star formation -- this claim is supported by strong magnetic fields (over 20 {\mu}G), similar to the ones found in much larger spiral galaxies. From the study of the spectral energy distribution, we conclude that the electron population in the intergalactic bridge between member galaxies originates from the disc areas, and therefore its age (approximately 3.7--16.9 Myr, depending on the model used) reflects the time-scale of the interaction. We have also discovered an angularly near compact steep source -- which is a member of a different galaxy pair -- at a redshift of approximately 0.125., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables

We observed total and polarized radio continuum emission from the spiral galaxy M 101 at 6.2 cm and 11.1 cm wavelengths with the Effelsberg telescope. We use these data to study various emission components in M 101 and properties of the magnetic field. Separation of thermal and non-thermal emission shows that the thermal emission is closely correlated with the spiral arms, while the non-thermal emission is more smoothly distributed indicating diffusion of cosmic ray electrons away from their places of origin. The radial distribution of both emissions has a break near R=16 kpc, where it steepens to an exponential scale length of about 5 kpc, which is about 2.5 times smaller than at R<16 kpc. The distribution of the polarized emission has a broad maximum near R=12 kpc and beyond R=16 kpc also decreases with about 5 kpc scalelength. It seems that near R=16 kpc a major change in the structure of M 101 takes place, which also affects the distributions of the strength of the random and ordered magnetic field. Beyond R=16 kpc the radial scale length of both fields is about 20 kpc, which implies that they decrease to about 0.3 \mu G at R=70 kpc, which is the largest optical extent. The equipartition strength of the total field ranges from nearly 10 \mu G at R<2 kpc to 4 \mu G at R=22-24 kpc. As the random field dominates in M 101, wavelength-independent polarization is the main polarization mechanism. We show that energetic events causing HI shells of mean diameter <625 pc could partly be responsible for this. At radii <24 kpc, the random magnetic field depends on the star formation rate per area with a power-law exponent of 0.28+-0.02. The ordered magnetic field is generally aligned with the spiral arms with pitch angles that are about 8{\deg} larger than those of HI filaments., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present results of the recent low-frequency radio observations of a tight galaxy pair Arp 143 at 234 and 612 MHz. These data are analysed together with the archive data at 1490, 4860, 8440, and 14940 MHz. From the analysis of the radio emission we derive constraints on the age of the radio emitting structures as well as on the properties of their magnetic field. We show that the collisional ring of NGC 2445 hosts strong magnetic fields (reaching 12 $\mu$G in its northwestern part) manifesting as a steep--spectrum, nonthermal radiation at radio frequencies. The spectral age of this structure is higher than estimates derived for the star-forming regions from the H$\alpha$ distribution, suggesting that the radio emission might have a different origin. The galactic core is of a very young spectral age, suggesting an ongoing starburst activity. We report discovery of a dwarf galaxy in the Leo Triplet. Analysis of the neutral hydrogen distribution shows that it rotates independently of the tidal tail of NGC 3628, with a radial velocity gradient of 35-40 km s$^{-1}$ over approximately 13 kpc. The galaxy has a very high neutral gas content, explaining large part of its total dynamic mass - suggesting small dark matter content. As it is located at the tip of the gaseous tail, this strongly suggests its tidal origin. Should it be the case, it would be one of the most confident and closest (to the Milky Way) detections of a tidal dwarf galaxy and, at the same time, a most detached from its parent galaxy ($\approx$140 kpc) object of this type., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; The Astrophysical Journal, in press

We present results of the VLA radio continuum total power and polarised intensity observations of Stephan's Quintet at 1.43 and 4.86 GHz along with complementary 4.85 and 8.35 GHz Effelsberg observations. Our study shows a large envelope of radio emission encompassing all the member galaxies and hence a large volume of intergalac- tic matter. Infall of the galaxy NGC 7318B produces a ridge of intergalactic, polarised emission, for which the magnetic field strength was estimated as 11.0 \pm 2.2 {\mu}G, with an ordered component of 2.6 \pm 0.8 {\mu}G. The energy density of the field within the ridge area is of the same order as estimates of the thermal component, implying a significant role of the magnetic field in the dynamics of the intergalactic matter. We also report that the tidal dwarf galaxy candidate SQ-B possesses a strong and highly anisotropic magnetic field with the total strength being equal to 6.5 \pm 1.9 {\mu}G and an ordered component reaching 3.5 \pm 1.2 {\mu}G, which is comparable to that found in normal-sized galaxies., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Deep scaled array VLA 20 and 6cm observations including polarization of 19 Virgo spirals are presented. This sample contains 6 galaxies with a global minimum of 20cm polarized emission at the receding side of the galactic disk and quadrupolar type large-scale magnetic fields. In the new sample no additional case of a ram-pressure stripped spiral galaxy with an asymmetric ridge of polarized radio continuum emission was found. In the absence of a close companion, a truncated HI disk, together with a ridge of polarized radio continuum emission at the outer edge of the HI disk, is a signpost of ram pressure stripping. 6 out of the 19 observed galaxies display asymmetric 6cm polarized emission distributions. Three galaxies belong to tidally interacting pairs, two galaxies host huge accreting HI envelopes, and one galaxy had a recent minor merger. Tidal interactions and accreting gas envelopes can lead to compression and shear motions which enhance the polarized radio continuum emission. In addition, galaxies with low average star formation rate per unit area have a low average degree of polarization. Shear or compression motions can enhance the degree of polarization. The average degree of polarization of tidally interacting galaxies is generally lower than expected for a given rotation velocity and star formation activity. This low average degree of polarization is at least partly due to the absence of polarized emission from the thin disk. Ram pressure stripping can decrease whereas tidal interactions most frequently decreases the average degree of polarization of Virgo spiral galaxies. We found that moderate active ram pressure stripping has no influence on the spectral index, but enhances the global radio continuum emission with respect to the FIR emission, while an accreting gas envelope can but not necessarily enhances the radio continuum emission with respect to the FIR emission., Comment: 37 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Aims. The magnetic fields of the member galaxies NGC 3628 and NGC 3627 show morphological peculiarities, suggesting that interactions within the group may be caused by stripping of the magnetic field. This process could supply the intergalactic space with magnetised material, a scenario considered as a possible source of intergalactic magnetic fields (as seen eg. in the Taffy pairs of galaxies). Additionally, the plumes are likely to be the tidal dwarf galaxy candidates. Methods. We performed radio continuum mapping observations at 2.64 GHz using the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope. We obtained total power and polarised intensity maps of the Triplet. These maps were analysed together with the archive data, and the magnetic field strength (as well as the magnetic energy density) was estimated. Results. Extended emission was not detected either in the total power or the polarised intensity maps. We obtained upper limits of the magnetic field strength and the energy density of the magnetic field in the Triplet. We detected emission from the easternmost clump and determined the strength of its magnetic field. In addition, we measured integrated fluxes of the member galaxies at 2.64 GHz and estimated their total magnetic field strengths. Conclusions. We found that the tidal tail hosts a tidal dwarf galaxy candidate that possesses a detectable magnetic field with a non-zero ordered component. Extended radio continuum emission, if present, is weaker than the reached confusion limit. The Virgo cluster of galaxies provides excellent conditions for studying interactions of galaxies with the cluster environment. Both the high-velocity tidal interactions and effects of ram pressure stripping by the intracluster gas can be investigated in detail. We extend our systematic search for possible anomalies in the magnetic field structures of Virgo cluster spirals in order to characterize a variety of effects and attribute them to different disturbing agents. Six angularly large Virgo cluster spiral galaxies (NGC4192, NGC4302, NGC4303, NGC4321, NGC4388, and NGC4535) were targets of a sensitive total power and polarization study using the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg at 4.85GHz and 8.35GHz (except for NGC4388 observed only at 4.85GHz, and NGC4535 observed only at 8.35GHz). Magnetic field structures distorted to various extent are found in all galaxies. Three galaxies (NGC4302, NGC4303, and NGC4321) show some signs of possible tidal interactions, while NGC4388 and NGC4535 have very likely experienced strong ram-pressure and shearing effects, respectively, visible as distortions and asymmetries of polarized intensity distributions. As in our previous study, even strongly perturbed galaxies closely follow the radio-far-infrared correlation. In NGC4303 and NGC4321, we observe symmetric spiral patterns of the magnetic field and in NGC4535 an asymmetric pattern. Magnetic fields allow us to trace even weak interactions that are difficult to detect with other observations. Our results show that the degree of distortions of a galaxy is not a simple function of the distance to the cluster center but reflects also the history of its interactions. The angle between the velocity vector and the rotation vector of a galaxy may be a general parameter that describes the level of distortions of galactic magnetic fields., Comment: 12 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables. The hot intracluster/intragroup medium (ICM/IGM) and a high galaxy density can lead to perturbations of the galactic interstellar medium (ISM) due to ram pressure and/or tidal interaction effects. In radio polarimetry observations, both phenomena may manifest similar features. X-ray data can help to determine the real origin of the perturbation. We analyse the distribution and physical properties of the hot gas in the Virgo cluster spiral galaxies NGC 4254 and NGC 4569, which indicate that the cluster environment has had a significant influence on their properties. By performing both spatial and spectral analyses of X-ray data, we try to distinguish between two major phenomena: tidal and ram pressure interactions. We compare our findings with the case of NGC 2276, in which a shock was reported, by analysing XMM-Newton X-ray data for this galaxy. We use archival XMM-Newton observations of NGC 4254, NGC 4569, and NGC 2276. Maps of the soft diffuse emission in the energy band 0.2 - 1 keV are obtained. For the three galaxies, especially at the position of magnetic field enhancements we perform a spectral analysis to derive gas temperatures and thus to look for shock signatures. A shock is a signature of ram pressure resulting from supersonic velocities; weak tidal interactions are not expected to influence the temperature of the ionized gas. In NGC 4254, we do not observe any temperature increase. This suggests tidal interactions rather than ram pressure stripping. In NGC 4569 the radio polarized ridge shows a higher temperature, which may indicate ram-pressure effects. For NGC 2276, we do not find clear indications of a shock. The main driver of the observed distortions is most likely tidal interaction. We present sub-mm continuum and heterodyne data of the interacting galaxy NGC 3627, obtained with the HHT and APEX. We find significant changes in the molecular line ratios over small scales in the southeastern part of this galaxy. The kinematics of the CO(2-1) line, as well as the morphology in the 870um continuum emission, suggest a continuation of the western spiral arm on the east side of the galaxy's central area. This continued spiral arm crosses the normal eastern spiral arm in an area which shows an unusual magnetic field configuration. This spiral arm crossing, independently of if it's physical or just projected, may help in the understanding of the observed magnetic field configuration., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, in conf. proc. The detailed comparison between observations and simulations of ram pressure stripped spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster has led to a three dimensional view of the galaxy orbits within the hot intracluster medium. The 3D velocities and Mach numbers derived from simulations can be used to derive simple Mach cone geometries for Virgo spiral galaxies. We search for indications of hot gas within Mach cones in X-ray observations of selected Virgo Cluster spiral galaxies (NGC 4569, NGC 4388, and NGC 4501). We find extraplanar diffuse X-ray emission in all galaxies. Based on the 3D velocity vectors from dynamical modelling a simple Mach cone is fitted to the triangular shape of NGC 4569's diffuse X-ray emission. Assuming that all extraplanar diffuse X-ray emission has to be located inside the Mach cone, we also fit Mach cones to NGC 4388's and NGC 4501's extraplanar X-ray emission. For NGC 4569 it is hard to reconcile the derived Mach cone opening angle with a Mach number based on the sound speed alone. Instead, a Mach number involving the Alfv\'enic speed seems to be more appropriate, yielding a magnetic field strength of $\sim 3$-6 $\mu$G for a intracluster medium density of $n \sim 10^{-4}$ cm$^{-3}$. Whereas the temperature of the hot component of NGC 4569's X-ray halo (0.5 keV) is at the high end but typical for a galactic outflow, the temperature of the hot gas tails of NGC 4388 and NGC 4501 are significantly hotter (0.7-0.9 keV). In NGC 4569 we find direct evidence for a Mach cone which is filled with hot gas from a galactic superwind. We suggest that the high gas temperatures in the X-ray tails of NGC 4388 and NGC 4501 are due to the mixing of the stripped ISM into the hot intracluster medium of the Virgo cluster., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables. The influence of the environment on the polarized and total power radio continuum emission of cluster spiral galaxies is investigated. We present deep scaled array VLA 20 and 6 cm observations including polarization of 8 Virgo spiral galaxies. These data are combined with existing optical, HI, and Halpha data. Ram pressure compression leads to sharp edges of the total power distribution at one side of the galactic disk. These edges coincide with HI edges. In edge-on galaxies the extraplanar radio emission can extend further than the HI emission. In the same galaxies asymmetric gradients in the degree of polarization give additional information on the ram pressure wind direction. The local total power emission is not sensitive to the effects of ram pressure. The radio continuum spectrum might flatten in the compressed region only for very strong ram pressure. This implies that neither the local star formation rate nor the turbulent small-scale magnetic field are significantly affected by ram pressure. Ram pressure compression occurs mainly on large scales (>=1 kpc) and is primarily detectable in polarized radio continuum emission., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

VIVA HI observations of the Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4501 are presented. The HI disk is sharply truncated to the southwest, well within the stellar disk. A region of low surface-density gas, which is more extended than the main HI disk, is discovered northeast of the galaxy center. These data are compared to existing 6cm polarized radio continuum emission, Halpha, and optical broad band images. We observe a coincidence between the western HI and polarized emission edges, on the one hand, and a faint Halpha emission ridge, on the other. The polarized emission maxima are located within the gaps between the spiral arms and the faint Halpha ridge. Based on the comparison of these observations with a sample of dynamical simulations with different values for maximum ram pressure and different inclination angles between the disk and the orbital plane,we conclude that ram pressure stripping can account for the main observed characteristics. NGC 4501 is stripped nearly edge-on, is heading southwest, and is ~200-300 Myr before peak ram pressure, i.e. its closest approach to M87. The southwestern ridge of enhanced gas surface density and enhanced polarized radio-continuum emission is due to ram pressure compression. It is argued that the faint western Halpha emission ridge is induced by nearly edge-on ram pressure stripping. Because of its proximity the Virgo Cluster is an excellent target for studying interactions of galaxies with the cluster environment. Both the high-velocity tidal interactions and effects of ram pressure stripping by the intracluster gas can be investigated. Optical and/or \ion{H}{i} observations do not always show effects of weak interactions between galaxies and their encounters with the cluster medium. For this reason we searched for possible anomalies in the magnetic field structure in Virgo Cluster spirals which could be attributed to perturbations in their gas distribution and kinematics. Five angularly large Virgo Cluster spiral galaxies (NGC 4501, NGC 4438, NGC 4535, NGC 4548 and NGC 4654) were the targets for a sensitive total power and polarization study using the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg at 4.85 GHz. For two objects polarization data at higher frequencies have been obtained allowing Faraday rotation analysis. Distorted magnetic field structures were identified in all galaxies. Interaction-induced magnetized outflows were found in NGC 4438 (due to nuclear activity) and NGC 4654 (a combination of tidal tails and ram pressure effects). Almost all objects (except the anaemic NGC 4548) exhibit distortions in polarized radio continuum attributable to influence of the ambient gas. For some galaxies they agree with observations of other species, but sometimes (NGC 4535) the magnetic field is the only tracer of the interaction with the cluster environment. The cluster environment clearly affects the evolution of the galaxies due to ram pressure and tidal effects. Magnetic fields provide a very long-lasting memory of past interactions. Therefore, they are a good tracer of weak interactions which are difficult to detect by other observations., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

Deep observations of 6cm polarized radio continuum emission of 8 Virgo spiral galaxies are presented. All galaxies show strongly asymmetric distributions of polarized intensity with elongated ridges located in the outer galactic disk. Such features are not found in existing observations of polarized radio continuum emission of field spiral galaxies, where the distribution of 6cm polarized intensity is generally relatively symmetric and strongest in the interarm regions. We therefore conclude that most Virgo spiral galaxies and most probably the majority of cluster spiral galaxies show asymmetric distributions of polarized radio continuum emission due to their interaction with the cluster environment. The polarized continuum emission is sensitive to compression and shear motions in the plane of the sky and thus contains important information about velocity distortions caused by these interactions., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, A&A accepted as a letter

In order to analyze the importance of the star formation rate in generating and amplifying magnetic fields in the interstellar medium we obtained deep total power and polarization maps at 4.85 GHz of three late type spiral galaxies NGC4236, NGC4656 and IC2574 using the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope. This was accompanied by imaging in the Halpha line. We also observed these objects at 1.4 GHz to obtain their integrated fluxes at this frequency and to determine their radio spectra. All galaxies were found to possess weak but detectable total power emission at 4.85 GHz, coincident with regions of recent star formation as traced by bright Halpha regions. The surface brightness of the radio-strongest object of our sample (NGC4656) is comparable to the radio-weakest objects in a sample of more than 50 normally star-forming spiral galaxies for which measurements at 4.8 GHz with the Effelsberg radio telescope are available. The fractional polarization of the 2 galaxies of our sample is less than 2%, significantly lower than for spiral galaxies of intermediate types, suggesting that the magnetic fields are not only weaker, but also less ordered than in spiral galaxies. The radio spectra of galaxies in our small sample are indicative of a substantial fraction of thermal emission, with a higher thermal fraction than in spirals with high star formation rates (SFR), while the nonthermal emission in our sample is relatively weak compared to spiral galaxies. We propose an equipartition model where the nonthermal emission increases ~SFR^(~1.4) and the ratio of nonthermal to thermal emission increases ~SFR^(~0.4). Using the Effelsberg radio telescope at 4.85GHz and 8.35 GHz we discovered large symmetric lobes of polarized radio emission around the strongly HI deficient Virgo cluster spiral galaxy NGC4569. These lobes extend up to 24 kpc from the galactic disk. Our observations were complemented by 1.4 GHz continuum emission from existing HI observations. This is the first time that such huge radio continuum lobes are observed in a cluster spiral galaxy. The eastern lobe seems detached and has a flat spectrum typical for in-situ cosmic ray electron acceleration. The western lobe is diffuse and possesses vertical magnetic fields over its whole volume. The lobes are not powered by an AGN, but probably by a nuclear starburst producing >10^5 supernovae which occurred ~30 Myr ago. We performed a high-sensitivity search for galaxy-scale magnetic fields by radio polarimetry at 10.45GHz and 4.85GHz with the Effelsberg 100m radio telescope, accompanied by Halpha imaging, for the two Local Group irregular galaxies IC10 and NGC6822. Their star-forming bodies are small and rotate slowly. IC10 is known to have a very high star-forming activity, resembling blue compact dwarfs, while NGC6822 has a low overall star-formation level. Despite very different current star formation rates, our Halpha imaging revealed a large web of diffuse Halpha filaments and shells in both IC10 and NGC6822. Some of them extend far away from the galaxy's main body. The total power emission of both objects shows bright peaks either at the positions of optically strong star-forming clumps (IC10) or individual HII regions or supernova remnants (NGC6822). However, in both cases we detect a smoothly distributed, extended component. In IC10 we found clear evidence for the presence of a diffuse, mostly random magnetic field of ~14muG strength, probably generated by a fluctuation dynamo. One of the Halpha-emitting filaments appears to be associated with enhanced magnetic fields. We also rediscuss the reddening of IC10 and its implications for its distance. In the case of NGC6822 we found only very weak evidence for nonthermal emission, except perhaps for some regions associated with local gas compression. We present three-frequency VLA observations of the flocculent spiral galaxy NGC 4414 made in order to study the magnetic field structure in absence of strong density wave flows. NGC 4414 shows a regular spiral pattern of observed polarization B-vectors with a radial component comparable in strength to the azimuthal one. The average pitch angle of the magnetic field is about 20$\degr$, similar to galaxies with a well-defined spiral pattern. This provides support for field generation by a turbulent dynamo without significant ``contamination'' from streaming motions in spiral arms. While the stellar light is very axisymmetric, the magnetic field structure shows a clear asymmetry with a stronger regular field and a smaller magnetic pitch angle in the northern disk. Extremely strong Faraday rotation is measured in the southern part of the disk, becoming Faraday thick at 6cm. The distribution of Faraday rotation suggests a mixture of axisymmetric and higher-mode magnetic fields. The strong Faraday effects in the southern region suggest a much thicker magnetoionic disk and a higher content of diffuse ionized gas than in the northern disk portion. An elongation of the 20cm total power emission is also seen towards the South. Although NGC 4414 is currently an isolated spiral, the asymmetries in the polarized radio emission may be sensitive tracers of previous encounters, including weak interactions which would chiefly affect the diffuse gas component without generating obvious long-term perturbations in the optical structure., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, A&A accepted

A three-dimensional (3D) MHD model is applied to simulate the evolution of a large-scale magnetic field in a barred galaxy possessing a gaseous halo extending to about 2.8 kpc above the galactic plane. As the model input we use a time-dependent velocity field of molecular gas resulting from self-consistent 3D N-body simulations of a galactic disk. We assume that the gaseous halo rotates differentially co-rotating with the disk or decreasing its velocity in the Z direction. The dynamo process included in the model yields the amplification of the magnetic field as well as the formation of field structures high above the galactic disk. The simulated magnetic fields are used to construct the models of a high-frequency (Faraday rotation-free) polarized radio emission that accounts for effects of projection and limited resolution, and is thus suitable for direct comparison with observations. We found that the resultant magnetic field correctly reproduces the observed structures of polarization B-vectors, forming coherent patterns well aligned with spiral arms and with the bar. The process initializing a wave-like behavior of the magnetic field, which efficiently forms magnetic maxima between the spiral arms, is demonstrated. The inclusion of the galactic halo constitutes a step towards a realistic model of galactic magnetic fields that includes as many dynamical components as needed for a realistic description., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, A&A in print

By observing the interacting galaxy NGC 3627 in radio polarization we try to answer the question to which degree the magnetic field follows the galactic gas flows. We obtained total power and polarized intensity maps at 8.46 GHz and 4.85 GHz using the VLA in its compact D-configuration. In order to overcome the zero-spacing problems, the interferometric data were combined with single-dish measurements obtained with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope. The observed magnetic field structure in NGC 3627 suggests that two field components are superposed. One component smoothly fills the interarm space and shows up also in the outermost disk regions, the other component follows a symmetric S-shaped structure. In the western disk the latter component is well aligned with an optical dust lane, following a bend which is possibly caused by external interactions. However, in the SE disk the magnetic field crosses a heavy dust lane segment, apparently being insensitive to strong density-wave effects. We suggest that the magnetic field is decoupled from the gas by high turbulent diffusion, in agreement with the large \ion{H}{i} line width in this region. We discuss in detail the possible influence of compression effects and non-axisymmetric gas flows on the general magnetic field asymmetries in NGC 3627. On the basis of the Faraday rotation distribution we also suggest the existence of a large ionized halo around this galaxy., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

In this letter we present first results from spectroscopic observations of Diffuse Ionized Gas (DIG) in the halo of NGC5775 obtained with FORS1 attached to UT1/Antu of the Very Large Telescope (VLT). At our slit position perpendicular to the disk (41" SE of the nucleus) the emission of [NII]6583, [OIII]5007, and [OII]3727 is detected out to 9 kpc into the halo, allowing possible ionization mechanisms of the DIG to be examined. Photoionization models which assume a dilute radiation field are able to fit the data for the disk, but they cannot account for the line ratios measured in the halo (e.g., [OI]/Halpha or [OII]/Halpha). In particular they fail to predict the observed increase of [OIII]5007/Halpha with increasing z. The most striking result concerns the kinematics of the halo gas. Velocities at high galactic latitudes drop from the midplane value to reach the systemic velocity at z ~ 9 kpc. An analysis of VLA archive data of the polarized radio-continuum emission at 4.86 GHz and 1.49 GHz reveals that magnetic fields in the halo have a strong component perpendicular to the disk and are aligned with the Halpha and radio-continuum spurs in the halo. This can result either from a strong wind action or, more likely, from the generation of dipolar magnetic fields. We briefly discuss the interrelation of the magnetic field structure and gas dynamics, in particular the role of magnetic fields in gas outflows, as well as the possible heating of DIG by magnetic reconnection., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Two flocculent galaxies NGC 3521 and NGC 5055 has been observed at 10.55GHz with the Effelsberg 100m telescope. In both cases polarized emission reveals substantial radial component of regular magnetic field - similar to that in grand-designed spirals. Comparison with H_alpha distribution obtained at Lowell Observatory is presented. We present a high-resolution VLA study of the total power and polarized radio continuum emission at 8.46 and 4.86 GHz of the irregular galaxy NGC 4449, known for its weak rotation and non-systematic gas motions. We found strong galaxy-scale regular magnetic fields, which is surprising because of a lack of ordered rotation required for the dynamo action. The strength of the regular field reaches 8 $\mu$G and that of the total field 14 $\mu$G, comparable to that of the total magnetic field strength in radio-bright spirals. The magnetic vectors in NGC 4449 form radial ``fans'' in the central region and fragments of a spiral pattern in the galaxy's outskirts. These structures are associated with large regions of systematic Faraday rotation, implying genuine galaxy-scale magnetic fields rather than random ones compressed and stretched by gas flows. The observed pattern of polarization B-vectors is similar to dynamo-type fields in normal spirals. Nonstandard, fast dynamo concepts are required to explain the observed field strengths, though it is unknown what kind of magnetic field geometry can be produced in slowly and chaotically rotating objects. We present 10.55 GHz observations of strong density-wave spiral NGC 3627. Total power and polarization maps with a resolution of 1.13', sensitive to a weak extended emmision were obtained. In the analysiz we used also available data in the CO ans H_alpha lines.
