Abstract

Introduction: During COVID-19 pandemic, the massive use of Personal Protective Equipment could provoke severe adverse reactions in latex allergy patients and could negatively affect their quality of life. Methods: Trough a survey the study aimed: (a) to evaluate the incidence of allergic reactions in patients with latex allergy during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic; (b) to evaluate the protective role of continuous latex sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) during this period; and (c) to evaluate quality of life of natural rubber latex allergy (NRLA) patients during the pandemic. Results: 67 patients (9 males and 58 females, mean age of 45.9 +/- 11.4 years) suffering from latex allergy were included in the present study. We recorded among our patients 13 cases (34.2%) of urticarial/angioedema (U/A), 9 cases (23.6%) of respiratory symptoms (dyspnoea, shortness of breath and wheezing) and 7 cases (18.4%) of anaphylaxis. In patients who underwent continuous SLIT, we observed less cases of U/A (p < 0.001), respiratory symptoms (p < 0.001), anaphylaxis (p = 0.003), hospitalizations (p = 0.014) and a lower therapy administration. We compared the results of SF-36 questionnaire in patients who underwent continuous and not-continuous SLIT with a significance differences score between these two groups. Conclusions: Our study is the first that investigated the clinical and quality of life effects of COVID-19 pandemic in NRLA patients.

Abstract

Scaled analogue models explored the role of different boundary conditions in intra‐caldera resurgence processes. Models investigated the role of magma intrusion depth (Series 1), asymmetric and symmetric caldera collapse (Series 2), as well as the presence of existing discontinuities in the pre‐volcanic substratum (Series 3) on the style of caldera resurgence. Experimental results indicate that different intrusion depths resulted in different resurgence styles and structural patterns, which evolved from piston‐like resurgence, for deeper intrusions, to intra‐caldera resurgent domes for shallower intrusions. Asymmetric collapse was typically accompanied by a tilted roof block above the emptied analogue magma reservoir, while inherited faults influenced significantly the deformation pattern of piston‐like resurgence. Experiments simulate many of the principal characteristics of calderas. We compare our modelling results primarily to the Los Potreros caldera nested within the Los Humeros Volcanic Complex, where the largest Mexico’s Quaternary eruption occurred and which hosts an important geothermal field (eastern Trans‐Mexican Volcanic Belt). A structural field survey was conducted to identify the kinematics of faults within the caldera and outside the volcanic edifice. The Los Potreros caldera shows a sub‐orthogonal fault pattern strikingly similar to that of models deformed with shallow intrusion depth. We interpret this correlation as an evidence of similarity in dynamic processes, whereby modelling results would indicate a scaled intrusion depth of approximately 4.5 km. The Acoculco caldera complex, in Mexico, shows a fault pattern similar to the Los Potreros caldera, and geological information corroborates the attribution of renewed magmatic pressure to similar intrusion depths.

17. Adverse reaction to Ficus Carica: reported case of a possible cross-reactivity with Der p1

Abstract

Background: Ficus carica is an edible fruit, belonging to the Moraceae family, rarely described as cause of food allergy. We describe the first case of fig allergy that occurred as a cross-reactivity between fig and Derp 1. Case presentation: We present a case of a 10-years-old-girl, with a history of no-seasonal mild intermittent rhinitis, who experienced an immediate reaction after ingestion of a fresh fig. Skin prick tests (SPT) with commercial extracts of food, airborne allergens, latex and panallergens (profilin, PR-10 and lipid transfer protein) were performed. SPT revealed a sensitization only for dermatophagoides farina and dermatophagoides pteronyssinus which was then confirmed with by specific IgE assay (UniCAP, Phadia, Uppsala, Sweden). We also carried out a positive SPT with a commercial fig allergen (Lofarma, Milan, Italy) and prick-by-prick (PBP) both with skin and pulp of green raw and cooked fig. Fig specific serum IgE levels were 1.08 U/ml and specific IgE for rDer p1 was 16.20 U/ml (total serum IgE = 377 U/ ml). In contrast specific IgE levels for latex, LTP, profilin, PR-10 and pollen allergens were negative. Conclusion: The ficin, the major fig allergen, belongs to cysteine protease family like Der p 1. The symptoms presented by our patient could be related to a cross reactivity between these two proteins which present a structural homology.

Abstract

Latex allergy is a relevant clinical problem observed especially among health-care workers, spina bifida patients and individuals who had multiple surgical procedures. Type I hypersensitivity latex reactions are more frequent than type IV (latex allergic contact dermatitis) and consist of skin involvement (urticaria and/or angioedema), respiratory symptoms (asthma/rhinitis) to systemic anaphylaxis. Thoseare elicited by direct contact with natural rubber latex items (i.e. medical devices) or by inhalation of latex airborne proteins. After diagnosis, prevention is the standard and best measure, but the strict avoidance is often impossible. Therefore in selected cases, the sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) may be a therapeutic approach able to influence the long-term natural history of latex allergy [1]. During SLIT, immediate adverse reactions have often been reported [2], but long-term complication are less described. Abstract

Atherosclerosis is a complex chronic inflammatory and metabolic disease that involves the collaboration of several cellular components of the immune system and results in thickening of the arterial wall. Atherosclerosis is also the primary cause of coronary artery and cerebrovascular diseases. A multitude of immune cell subsets, soluble molecules such as chemokines and cytokines, and circulating lipids play pivotal roles in atherosclerosis development. In this review, we highlight the role of the immune system in the course of atherosclerotic disease development and discuss the mechanisms involved.

Abstract

Junctional adhesion molecules (JAMs) are a family of adhesion molecules localized at the tight junction of polarized cells and on the cell surface of leukocytes. The last 20years of research in this field has shown that several members of the family play an important role in the regulation of cell polarity, endothelium permeability and leukocytes migration. They mediate these pleiotropic functions through a multitude of homophilic and heterophilic interactions with intrafamily and extrafamily partners. In this article, we review the current status of the JAM family and highlight their functional role in tight junction dynamics and leukocyte transmigration.

39. Supplementary Material for Analogue Experiments on Lateral versus Vertical Dike Propagation

Abstract

The dataset includes movies of 29 analogue experiments performed to investigate the effects on dike propagation by the following imposed parameters: density ratio between host-rock and magma analogues, rigidity layering and density layering of the host medium, flow rate and topography. The purpose of the experiments is to define a hierarchy of all the parameters considered, by varying systematically each of them, comparing semi-quantitatively the variations on dike geometry and velocity. Experimental setup The experimental set-up consists of a 33 × 58 × 38.5 cm3 Plexiglas box and a peristaltic pump that injects water (magma analogue) into pig-skin gelatin (crustal analogue) alternatively from the bottom (Set 1) and the side of the box (Set 2). The gelatin rheological properties are varied by mixing different concentrations of gelatin powder and NaCl. We refer to “rigidity layering” when the rigidity ratio (i.e. Young’s Modulus) between the upper and lower layer (Eu/El) is < or > 1, and to “density layering” when Eu/El ~ 1, but the two layers show different densities (i.e. the ratio between the density of the upper and lower layer, ρU/ρL). The experiments with topography are prepared by imposing a mold with gently inward dipping flanks (2.4° and 3.7°) on the opposite sides of the box separated by a 8 cm wide horizontal plain on the gelatin surface. This configuration simulates the 2-D along-strike topography of the 2014 Bardarbunga intrusion (Iceland) and allows investigating the role of two opposite slopes on dike propagation. The topography profile dips parallel to the long side of the Plexiglas box (x axis in Figure 1 of Urbani et al. 2018). The flow rate has been changed between 0.079 and 0.435 ml/s. For the details about the model set-up, experimental results and interpretation refer to Urbani et al. (2018). The time-lapse movies show the time evolution of the dike shape, in side and map view, of 29 out of 33 models presented in Urbani et al. (2018). It is recommended to open the films with the VLC media player. The time-lapse of each experiment is indicated in the bottom left corner. A full list of files is given in “Experiments_Summary_2018-012.pdf” in which Set 1 (bottom injection) and Set 2 (lateral injection) experiments are indicated in red and blue color respectively. The same file also provides a summary of the boundary conditions imposed in each experiment. Tu and Tl indicate the thickness of the upper and lower layer respectively.

Abstract

Rheumatological systemic autoimmune diseases, such as connective tissue diseases, rheumatoid arthritis or spondyloarthritis, are characterized by the presence of joint involvement associated with extra-articular manifestations. Among them, cutaneous diseases are often the most relevant and representative clinical manifestation, as in psoriatic arthritis, scleroderma or systemic lupus erythematosus. In this context, it is useful for rheumatologists to understand better skin diseases and their histopathological features. Evaluation of skin biopsy specimens can be helpful not only to confirm the diagnosis in both classic and clinically atypical variants, but also to improve further our knowledge of the pathogenetic mechanisms and the close link between skin and articular diseases. In this review, we discuss the clinical features, diagnostic evaluation and the histopathological features of skin manifestation of the most relevant rheumatological autoimmune diseases.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present a project in order to verify -without the need of knowing the distance CERN-Gran Sasso- the discovery made by the OPERA Collaboration concerning the speed of the CERN neutrinos. The project consists of two parts. A simple one and a less simple one. Both have the great advantage of being totally independent of the knowledge of the distance, ≃ 732 km, between the two Labs, CERN and LNGS, where the neutrinos are produced and detected, respectively. The "simple" version of this project is based on the high-energy horizontal cosmic muons, which traverse LVD and OPERA detectors, thus allowing to cross-calibrate the timing systems of both experiments in a way which is totally independent of the TOF measurements of CNGS. This component of the project is being studied in collaboration with the OPERA group, as the time stabilities of both experiments are needed. In fact it is since a long time that the two groups are engaged with this problem. In this paper we will present and discuss the "less simple" part which allows to establish, at the highest possible level of accuracy, if (v > c) effects really exist.
