The underground layers of cities are constantly concreted with urban transformation projects. The studies on built environment mainly focus on the morphological changes, related dispossessions and observable aspects of urban landscape. However, the environmental costs of transformations are not limited to the impacts of above-ground interventions. In Istanbul, the major impact of subterranean interventions is the destruction of water and soil ecosystems as well as its multi-layered heritage as the large-scale urban transformation decisions are primarily applied to historic neighbourhoods where the existing building stock was appropriated by the urban precariat. The urban transformation projects in historic neighbourhoods of Istanbul come into question with socio-economic dispossessions rather than environmental justice. In this manuscript, the main aim is to address the socio-ecological impacts of planning and architectural design decisions disregarding subterranean construction density, through the case of Tarlabaşı in Istanbul. Tarlabaşı represents one of the most emblematic case in Istanbul’s urban resistance history and evokes eco-dystopias, which may be attributed to the decisions that justify stigmatisation. With the context, conceptual frame and scope set by these problem definitions, while considering urban inequality a pre-condition of environmental justice, this manuscript examines the correlation between environmental policies, social stigmatisation and flexed environmental values in planning and architecture culture via local political ecology. The methodology employed in the study is based on qualitative analysis of the stages and legal decisions involved. Urban environmental acupuncture (UEA) is a novel approach designed to engage with a variety of stakeholders to successfully implement nature-based solutions in dense urban areas. The Interreg Central Europe project SALUTE4CE piloted this concept through small-scale, low-budget interventions in four cities: Chorzow (Poland), Erfurt (Germany), Alessandria (Italy), and Liptovski Mikulas (Slovakia). The pilot projects were designed to be quickly implementable, utilizing abandoned or undesirable sites, with the potential to catalyze both physical and social transformation. Interviews with local actors in these cities after project implementation provided valuable feedback, which was used to develop principles of urban environmental acupuncture. While the limited number of interviews means these findings offer only initial insights, they are largely supported by existing research. Nevertheless, this perspective provides important lessons that can inform future transformation projects and help evaluate the success of the UEA approach. The key contributions of this work are the introduction of urban environmental acupuncture concept, deriving principles of UEA based on feedback from local stakeholders and offering insights in future design and evaluation of similar nature-based solution initiatives in dense urban environments. This perspective helps to establish the potential of UEA as a tool for engaging diverse stakeholders and catalyzing sustainable urban transformation (specifically expansion of nature-based solutions) through low-cost interventions. Policy and practice recommendations: •To maintain low project costs, strategic decision-making is needed regarding the types of nature-based, the condition of the sites before construction, the infrastructure to be placed on the site as well as activation of volunteers in project activities. •Within the Central European cities examined, small, underutilized, and abandoned spaces are abundant and offer a way forward in implementing nature-based solutions. •To improve rapid implementation of nature-based solution implementation, processes within cities should be streamlined (e.g. bundling projects, easing planning requirements for micro projects). •To further promote implementation beyond initial nature-based solution projects, catalyze broader transformations (e.g. include the public in planning and implementation processes, identify sites for future UEA implementation, integrate UEA in planning documents, obtain letters of commitment from politicians). Housing cooperatives and social movements have become significant actors in the housing delivery in Harare, Zimbabwe. This paper examines how these social movements contribute to the transformation of urban territories. We argue that through strategies, such as collective defiance and demonstration of alternative; housing cooperatives and social movements have challenged urban authorities to concede to new forms of urban development. These urban collectives have created 'new infrastructure geographies. At the same time, planning institutions respond by reforming policies to embrace grassroots housing initiatives. Purpose: This article explores the impacts of the changing land-use on urban heat island (UHI) in an urban transformation zone in Ankara (Türkiye). Identifying a characteristic rural landscape until the 1950s, the study area experienced a drastic land-use change by razing the fertile landscape of the city and replacing it with a sealed surface. Development of the squatter houses after the 1960s and, subsequently, the implementation of a new housing morphology have introduced new sceneries, scales and surface conditions that make the study area a noteworthy case to analyze. Design/methodology/approach: Regarding the drastic spatio-temporal change of the study area, this research assesses the impacts of the changing land-use on UHI based on three periods. Using 1957, 1991 and 2021 aerial imaginaries and maps, it analyzes the temperature alteration caused by the changing land-use. To do so, different surface types, green patterns and built-up areas have been modeled using Ankara climatic data and transferred to ENVI-Met to calculate the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) values. Findings: The calculation has been developed over a transect covering an area of 40 m × 170 m, which includes diversity in terms of architecture, landscape and open space elements. To encourage future design strategies, the research findings deliberate into three extents that discuss the lacking climate knowledge in the ongoing urban transformation projects: impervious surface ratio and regional albedo variation, changing aspect ratio and temperature variation at the pedestrian level. Originality/value: Urban transformation projects, being countrywide operations in Türkiye, need to cover climate-informed design strategies. Herein, the article underlines the critical position of design decisions in forming a climate-informed urban environment. Street experiments have become a popular tool in urban and mobility planning and are increasingly studied in academia. Yet, systematic analysis is limited. This paper presents an assessment framework to collect information on street experiment goals, characteristics, impacts, and learnings in a systematic way. The framework is less focused, but more comprehensive than other approaches. From a scientific point of view, the systematic data collection serves as a basis to apply theoretical or analytical frameworks. Urban densification continues unabated, even as the possible consequences for users’ eye-level experiences remain unknown. This study addresses these consequences. In a laboratory setting, images of the NDSM wharf were shown to university students primed for one of three user groups: residents, visitors and passers-by. Their visual experiences were recorded using eye-tracking and analyzed in combination with surveys on self-reported appreciation and restorativeness. On-site surveys were also administered among real users. The results reveal distinct eye-movement patterns that point to the influence of environmental roles and tasks and how architectural qualities steer people’s visual experience, valence and restoration. This study examines the transformation of the urban fabric by analyzing changes in both structural and numerical parameters of spatial organization, with a particular emphasis on the hierarchical relationships between streets, blocks, and buildings. The research utilizes Bursa, the former Ottoman capital in Turkey, as a case study to explore these dynamics. The elements of streets, blocks, and buildings are posited as fundamental components in conceptualizing cities as layered palimpsests, where successive historical layers coexist within the urban fabric. The research establishes a conceptual parallel between the methodologies and analytical tools of urban morphology, particularly through the shared notion of the palimpsest. In the case of Bursa, the architectural remains and urban form of the Early, Classical, and Late Ottoman periods and of the Republican period are superimposed. In particular, the late Ottoman reform era, the Tanzimat period of the 19th century, brought great change. Historical maps from this era serve as primary sources for comprehending the evolving character and spatial configuration of the city. This research presents a novel methodological contribution by extending the analytical framework of urban morphology to integrate both qualitative and quantitative data. It employs Geographic Information Systems (GISs) and statistical methods to quantify changes in the urban fabric, assessing both pre-modernization and post-modernization phases. Historical maps from the 19th century are utilized as primary sources to trace and compare transformations within the urban fabric, with clustering techniques further aiding this analysis. The findings provide a deeper understanding of the dynamic processes that shape the historic structure of cities, offering a dual approach to urban transformation that harmonizes historical continuity with modern development. The article analyzes the recent relocation of the city center to another semi-central area, formerly a historical suburb of Šnipiškės in Vilnius, Lithuania, which took place in the context of post-Soviet transformations. This article is a continuation of the authors' work in researching the Šnipiškės territory, where the authors emphasize that an ambitious political decision, poorly supported by data and based on a questionable vision, was not successful. This study employs a concept-driven, qualitative approach to analyze the urban transformation of the territory. Grounded in architectural theories, the research examines how relocating the city center to this historic suburb has impacted its character. This paper presents the results of theoretical and applied research that employs methodological experimentation in a project for the protection and integrated transformation of the downtown area of the city of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. The particular nature of this case relates to two factors: (a) strategies and policies to protect and enhance the cultural heritage as a driver for tourism and the cultural development of the entire Emirate, from archaeological goods to the urban fabrics in historical centres (Sharjah and Korfakkhan), in contrast to the surrounding Emirates; and (b) the client's request to define guidelines to manage the urban cultural heritage during a time of transition while awaiting the results of UNESCO candidacy. This unique fact denotes a sensitivity and long-term policies regarding the cultural heritage which views the recovery of the urban historical heritage, assuming the cultural component as the fourth dimension of sustainability. The methodological approach, the results of the research, and design are organized on the dual urban and building scale to understand the structure and elements of the historical centre. The actions and interventions are differentiated with respect to urban fabric, building, archaeological good, and landscape, and translate the strategies of the guidelines into short-/mid-/long-term design actions. Urban transformation and sustainability research are current issues in the construction industry. This study aims to comprehend the past and current trends in the relationship between urban transformation and sustainability through a literature review and bibliometric analysis, focusing on the themes that these studies concentrate on and determining the main subjects addressed within these themes. The study examined research articles that mention the concepts of “urban transformation” and “sustainability” in their title, abstract and keywords, published between 2002–2022 in the Scopus database. A total of 86 articles were analyzed in detail. The findings have clearly indicated 3 main issues of paramount importance: (1) Developing countries must prioritize sustainability in urban planning to align with global trends. (2) Collaborative initiatives involving diverse stakeholders are not just beneficial but essential for advancing sustainable urban development. (3) Integrating environmental, climate, and energy aspects into the framework of urban transformation and sustainability is not merely advantageous but crucial. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on urban transformation by providing a general framework and a systematized understanding of the issues related to urban transformation and sustainability. Furthermore, it is expected to raise awareness among implementers and policymakers regarding sustainable urban transformation issues that have emerged in recent years.

In our cities, which are constantly changing and developing, sustainable development models should be implemented in order to combat urban challenges such as rapid urbanization, migration, disasters, epidemics etc. Urban transformation applications, which came to the agenda with the Law No. 6306, are among the methods of struggling with difficulties. In order to construct and discuss the relationship between urban transformation application areas and smart city strategies, Esenler District, which came to the fore with its unplanned construction and property problems, was chosen as the study area. Analytical hierarchy process was used to measure the smartness potential of Esenler District, one of the largest districts in the Istanbul metropolitan area. In the workshops and interviews held within the scope of the study, the problem areas and important concepts related to smart cities determined by the experts have made a great contribution to the measurement of the smartness potential of Esenler District. The current situation of Esenler District, which has taken the first and major step towards reaching smart cities in Turkey, has been revealed and it has been evaluated whether the district has sufficient infrastructure for smart transformation. When the radar chart created as a result of the study is examined, it is seen that the smart governance component received the highest score with 2.72 points. The smart life component is 2.40, the smart environment component is 2.24, the smart economy component is 2.04, the smart people component is 1.90 and the smart mobility component is 1.88 points outs of 5.00 points. In this study, the reproduction of the areas, with smart solutions in Esenler, is discussed and the positive and negative aspects of the project planned to be implemented are revealed. Facing the challenges of motorised traffic, many cities around the globe started implementing measures to transform their urban transport systems. One of the major challenges for the success of adequate policies is not only their effectiveness but also whether they are accepted by city residents. With a quantitative case study in four neighbourhoods in Frankfurt am Main (N = 821), this article investigates the acceptability of three measures: (i) parking management, (ii) the conversion of car lanes into cycle lanes and (iii) the closure of an inner city arterial road to car traffic. The results show a surprisingly high acceptability for all measures if the benefits for local residents are tangible. Thus, successful policy packages may combine push measures with either pull measures, as suggested frequently in the literature, or with improvements for other land uses (e.g. re-using former car-parking spaces for non-transport purposes, such as greenery or seating areas). Furthermore, the perceived effectiveness, daily travel practices and intentions to reduce car use, the built environment and, to a lesser degree, socio-demographics explain differences in acceptability by population group. Over the past two decades, global cities have been addressing climate challenges by transforming their gray infrastructural spaces through climate-adaptive and nature-based regeneration processes. These efforts also aim to tackle local ecological, social, and economic disparities. Despite the prevailing focus on technical and performance-based approaches, research on climate-adaptive, nature-based regeneration of streetscapes remains limited and has yet to significantly influence design-driven approaches to urban regeneration. This paper seeks to address these gaps by emphasizing the importance of spatial dimensions in overcoming current theoretical and operational limitations. It introduces a research experience that aims to leverage the potential of design to promote climate-adaptive, nature-based green regeneration of streetscapes and to integrate this approach into mainstream practices through a "research-by-design" methodology. To achieve this, an operational framework has been developed and is presented here, offering both conceptual and practical insights for creating climate-adaptive, nature-based streetscapes. Following the proposed methodology, two pilot design cases are introduced and discussed, both located in the Italian city of Matera: Piccianello and La Martella. This anthropological study focuses on spatially ordered dimensions of sociocultural life in Kontula, a suburban housing estate located at the urban margins of Helsinki, Finland. With a notorious reputation since its construction in the 1960s, it has come to represent the numerous ills of contemporary urbanity, from poverty and substance abuse to failed immigration policies. Its urban transformation is explored as the entanglement of imagination and materiality, a make-believe space that privileges neither the social constructionist nor the purely materialist perspective. I study the everyday life of its inhabitants as recurring and routinized episodes, occasionally interrupted by events that disturb its embodied flow and force inhabitants to reflect upon their spatially situated practices. I argue that the everyday encounters in rapidly transforming Kontula are simultaneously experienced as absurd and ordinary, and constitute the ordering principles of its affective geography. Cities serve as both political and economic hubs. Sustainable development has long been acknowledged as crucial to the well-being of the environment, people, and society. In order to improve the current state of spatial affairs and attain long-term resilience, humanity is looking for reliable and sustainable urban planning approaches. Urban agriculture has received a lot of attention in recent years as an enduring and pervasive kind of landscape. Although the contribution of urban agriculture has been well documented in many studies on economic, social and ecological aspects, there has been little discussion of its practical value as a tool for spatial development. Additionally, the potential of urban agriculture as a landscape approach remains underdeveloped. In summary, current research and practice lacks a scientific framework for considering urban agriculture as a landscape approach to intervene in urban spaces. To this end, this paper explores the potential of urban agriculture as a landscape approach in sustainable urban planning and design through qualitative case study. Taking Songzhuang in Beijing as an example, we discuss and summarise the operational value and potential of urban agriculture from a design perspective. The findings suggest that landscape-based urbanism that includes urban agriculture can harmonise social, economic, environmental and ecological elements. Finally, in order to provide a generalised approach, this paper proposes a scientific framework for articulating a landscape approach to urban agriculture to guide future research and practice. The link between cultural heritage, touristification, and urban development has been extensively researched in larger cities with a strong appeal to international tourists. However, there is limited information on the relationship between these factors in smaller cultural heritage towns that rely only on regional or national tourism. This is also the case for small and medium-sized colonial towns in the Brazilian interior, which are the focus of this paper. We introduce the concept of “culture-touristification” as a form of touristification that is co-constituted by several interacting, culture-led sub-processes, such as patrimonialization, culturalization, festivalization, adventuring of landscapes, telenovelaization, and counter-culturalization. Based on this concept, we argue that culture-touristification drives the touristic transformation of small and medium-sized colonial towns in the interior of Brazil. However, the effects and the interplay of these sub-processes are different in these towns. Some of them may be more pronounced than others, and some may only be partially articulated, depending, for example, on their societal significance, the strategic orientation of responsible stakeholders, the resistance of local populations, or the geographical location of the towns. To illustrate this argument, we draw on case studies conducted in Cidade de Goiás and Pirenópolis, two small colonial towns in the state of Goiás, Brazil. Methods include in-depth and semi-structured interviews with residents and critical actors, mappings of building use in the town centers, participant observation, analysis of telenovelas and Instagram hashtags representing these cities, and document and data research. The region between the Middle Ebro and the Pyrenees stands out for its notable urban density in the Roman era, undergoing significant transformations from the 3rd century AD onwards. This study focuses on the Late Antiquity period, examining the evolution of 16 Roman cities archaeologically identified in the region. The research aims to amalgamate and compare data on morphological changes, alterations in perimeters, abandonment of spaces, and the construction of fortifications, offering a comprehensive and compelling perspective on urban dynamics during the transition from the Roman Empire to the Early Middle Ages in this geographical area. The identities of cities are strongly tied to their histories. For cities with deep-rooted pasts, historical heritage elements are crucial due to their functions in establishing a connection between the city’s past, present, and future. Historical environments that emerge from the historical and cultural identity of cities are known as areas with the character of open-air museums. The Historic Bazaar and Inn District, located in the historical core of the city of Bursa, constitute the research area of this study. Bursa has faced intensive migration since the 1960s, parallel to industrialization. In this context, the region became surrounded by multi-story apartment blocks in the 1980s. Currently, urban transformation practices are being implemented in the region to highlight and preserve this historical fabric. This study aims to address the spatial changes resulting from urban transformation practices in the research area. In the research field, starting from the year 2020, approximately 40 structures were demolished with the intention of highlighting the historical environment, leading to various consequences. Cities were at the center of the COVID-19 pandemic due to the concentration of affected populations and economic activities that needed to be revived to support global recovery. While cities offer strong economic and social benefits due to density, proximity, and global connectivity, the pandemic had a tremendous impact on their vital functions. It resulted in lost lives and livelihoods and deepened economic and social divides. Furthermore, the pandemic exacerbated many existing environmental challenges in cities. This presented an opportunity to tackle these interlinked challenges in an integrated manner. Evidence suggests that many city leaders integrated environmental sustainability as an important element to complement their emergency responses. Drawing from experiences in cities around the world, particularly those participating in the Sustainable Cities Program supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), this paper describes how integrated solutions were applied to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. Consistent with a Healthy Planet Healthy People concept, a framework is proposed for sustainable urban transformation and to build cities that are resilient to shocks and stresses. With global environmental benefits at the core, the framework highlights the importance of integration, inclusion, and innovation as key approaches in steering the future green growth and prosperity of cities. Neoliberal policies, including ones relating to health, education, and urban transformation, impact various aspects of daily life in Turkey. Gentrification is a prominent topic in discussions and research which considers the question of how urban transformation practices in the context of gentrification affect economic and social life. The neighbourhood of Mehmet Akif Ersoy, an area of urban transformation in the Yenimahalle district of Ankara, was examined to investigate this question. The first phase of this renovation project was completed in 2011 through the collaboration of Yenimahalle Municipality and the private sector, specifically the YDA construction company. This study uses semi-structured interviews with 47 participants to analyse the perspectives and experiences of the local residents and individuals who use the social facilities on a daily basis. The first interlocutors of urban transformation, former slum owners, believe that the purpose of transformation is economic profit. This group consider the new environment being offered to them as being little more than a modern slum. According to the participants who relocated to the region after the urban transformation, while the project was successful due to the location of the region, they felt that the transformation should have been carried out in a more equitable manner. Additionally, those who use the social living space built in accordance with the region's dynamics after the urban transformation, report an increase in the mobility of the region and that they feel safe while using the facilities. It was therefore seen that the individuals who utilise communal spaces believe that urban regeneration is highly advantageous for the area. Based on the findings of the research, it was established that economic considerations are prioritised in the implementation of urban regeneration projects, which result in the creation of new areas of dilapidation. As urban regeneration initiatives, in addition to physical revitalisation, may lead to consequences such as increased profit and gentrification, finding common points of agreement for the demands and expectations of all stakeholders and users can increase the success of urban transformation initiatives. This study aims to examine the impact of the Rumeli Railway, built by the Ottoman Empire in the second half of the 19th century, on the transformation of the urban space in the Sirkeci District by evaluating the cooperation and conflicts between the state, foreign investors, and local actors and the political, social, and urban spatial effects of the construction process. The Industrial Revolution began a process of major changes and reforms across the world. These changes led to radical reform worldwide while closing and opening an era in economic, social, and technological terms. The revolution first started in the UK and then spread to Northern Europe and North America. Steam-powered machines and vehicles are among the reasons for the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The discovery of steam-powered trains made the construction of railways essential. The Ottoman Empire also made use of this innovation and built the Rumeli Railway in the second half of the 19th century. As the majority of the railways were built by the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, the Rumeli Railway was funded by foreign investors; many written sources describing the processes of obtaining their privileges, plan projects describing the construction processes, and many official correspondences describing the events during the construction process are available in the Turkish Republic Presidency State Ottoman Archives (OA). This study examines the expropriation processes carried out in the historical peninsula in the Sirkeci District during the construction of the Rumeli Railway in the light of archival documents. The editorial introduces the articles in this thematic issue, which provides a multifaceted analyses on how residents of vulnerable neighbourhoods cope with stressful circumstances and various crises. The aim is to understand daily survival at the neighbourhood level amid rapidly changing conditions. The articles present both quantitative and qualitative analyses that make detailed observations of agency, resilience, and community in diverse sociocultural contexts.

As the tier of government closest to people, local government plays a key role in answering local needs and aspirations. However, local governments are often under-resourced, leaving them inadequately responsive to many of these critical local demands. Moreover, accountability to their citizens, which is the core of a well-functioning local democracy, is often lacking because the necessary formal laws and informal norms do not enable citizens to influence the decision-making process in a collaborative, creative, and evidence-based process that promotes collective learning. Through innovative case study analyses from around the world, the 12 contributions in this thematic issue delve into the multifaceted ways in which local governments can bridge the gap between people and politics, offering innovative perspectives on participatory governance, co-creation, and collaborative decision-making for inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities. The cases showcase innovations and challenges in the urban environment, capturing different ways to bring people and politics together in an attempt to co-create solutions for a sustainable and resilient urban future. The insights provided by this plethora of cases provides lessons that can help revolutionise international, national, and local urban policy to empower local authorities and their local communities to address the increasingly urgent challenges faced by municipalities around the world, ensuring an inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable future for the generations to come.

Afet riski gibi pek çok nedenle üretilen kentsel dönüşüm projeleri kentsel mekânın şekillenmesinde önemli rol oynamaktadır. Ayrıca toplum üzerinde çok boyutlu etkileri olan kentsel dönüşüm projeleri, bireylerin yaşam kalitelerini ve yapılı çevreye ilişkin memnuniyetlerini doğrudan etkilemektedir. Bu bağlamda çalışma, kentsel dönüşüm projelerinin konut sakinlerinin günlük yaşamları ve yaşam kaliteleri üzerindeki etkisini tespit etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma için örneklem olarak seçilen kentsel dönüşüm projesi, Ankara Sincan ilçesinde müstakil ruhsatsız yapılardan oluşan bir mahalle olan Saraycık Mahallesi'nde Toplu Konut İdaresi tarafından üretilmiştir. Çalışma, fiziksel dönüşümün, dönüşüm öncesi bölgede yaşayan insanların günlük yaşamlarını ve yaşam kalitelerini nasıl etkilediğini incelemektedir. Dönüşüm projesi öncesi bölgede yaşayan insanların yeni yaşam ortamı ve yaşamlarındaki değişim hakkındaki görüşleri hakkında veri toplamak için yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme tekniği kullanılmıştır. Görüşme sonuçları, dönüşümden önce bölgede yaşayan insanların, kentsel dönüşüm projesinin yarattığı yeni yaşam ortamına uyum sağlamakta zorlandıklarını göstermektedir. Bu nedenle kentsel dönüşüm projeleri üretilirken, projenin sakinler üzerindeki muhtemel sosyal etkilerinin göz önünde bulundurulması ve kentsel dönüşüm projesinden etkilenen sakinlerin de sürece dahil edilmesi büyük önem taşımaktadır.

Current spatial changes involving broad urban landscapes affect people's perceptions of their surroundings, sense of place, and attachment to a place, constituting a disruption to these. As a result, on a social scale, they translate into people's well-being. The following study of the impact of large-scale architectural and urban developments on the place of residence is based on the assumption that physical space determines the quality of life in the living place and the changes in the process condition residents to adapt to their new surroundings—based on the three pillars of place, people, and process (3Ps). The article consists of two parts. The first is theoretical, which conceptualises spatial change based on the theory of human dependence on place. The second part–an empirical study—discusses the transformation of the post-industrial area of Bicocca (Milan), which, 40 years after the intervention, has led to conclusions and recommendations for urban planning. The results demonstrate the different sensitivities of the urban areas to the process of functional–spatial change, the essence of the accessibility of public space, public facilities, and transport infrastructure. The planning process can positively influence social adaptation to spatial change mitigation. Residential areas may be subject to additional protection procedures. The study is relevant to a sustainable planning process in the inevitable transformation of urban areas. This article is a response to Leitner and Sheppard's recent publications on Jakarta. I argue that Jakarta's kampungs and the eviction of their communities is a topic that needs to be situated in the realm of social reproduction. The multidimensional problems in kampungs fall within capitalism's wider 'crisis of care'. From this methodological position, we can access the political domain of the kampung, from which a new political agency emerges as collective bodies beyond merely the sum of individual survival tactics. The spatial arrangement of the popular '15-minute city' struggles for definitional clarity, threatening effective application of the theory in practice. We conduct a comparative study of Shanghai, Melbourne, and Portland – pioneering cities in planning 15/20-minute neighbourhoods, by reviewing related planning documents and mapping the morphologies of walkable urban areas in these cities. Our findings highlight the capacity of planners to be constructive theorists of 15-minute cities. We suggest that the term "X-minute city" is more appropriate as an overall label, and that the crucial role of main streets in fostering walkability and urbanity could distinguish the X-minute city from similar theories. This article explores the concept of the Anthropocene through the case of Baiyin, a significant mining city in the western Chinese province of Gansu. Baiyin's history, from its industrial birth in the 1950s to its current environmental remediation and economic diversification efforts, highlights how urban communities built around industrial resource extraction have blurred both physically and conceptually the dichotomy between urban and hinterland. Baiyin's role in the larger, global dissolution of the urban/hinterland divide draws attention, moreover, to the nonlinearity and complexity of Anthropocene processes at the level of the city. The article contributes to our understanding of the multifaceted nature and local manifestations of the Anthropocene and offers a case study through which to view the planetary integration of urban and hinterland environments. The original Cerdà plan (Pla Cerdà) of 1855 for the extension of Barcelona is famous for its grid array of large blocks and wide streets to promote circulation. Each block was originally intended to have an area of open space in the center to provide for the needs of residents. Already by the 1920s, however, the center of the blocks had been filled with buildings. Barcelona currently suffers from a chronic lack of open space, excess noise, and air pollution that exceeds European Union law. This article aims to trace the agency of play as a dynamic process in urban planning to provide new sources of open space through Superblocks (aka Superillas and Supermanzanas). We begin with a brief history of their implementation in the city of Barcelona and the evolution of their justification from the 1990s onward. We then explain the capacity for urban transformation that Superblocks have and how they can modify the urban mobility model and the public space model. We then analyze the role of different forms of play that are used in the area of Poblenou to suggest how play can be used to increase the legitimacy of public participation. Finally, we observe the contingent role of play within urban socialization and in motivating and shaping the urban planning processes of implementing Superblocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
