Urban sprawl poses substantial challenges to sustainable urban development, particularly within the context of rapid urbanization as observed in China. Leveraging China’s “Urban Development Boundaries Pilot Projects” from 2003 to 2020 as a quasi-natural experiment, this study employs a difference-in-difference approach to investigate the causal impact of urban growth boundary (UGB) policies on controlling urban sprawl. The findings indicate a restraining effect of UGB on urban sprawl. The urban sprawl index of pilot cities diminished by 0.0447 units relative to non-pilot cities, equating to an approximately 9.18% decline from the pre-policy mean of 0.4862. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the reduction effect of UGB is more pronounced in southern and eastern cities, as well as cities with a moderate level of market integration. This restraining impact amplifies as the administrative level of the city escalate. We find that the inhibitory effect exhibits a U-shaped trend as population density increases. This paper broadens the analytical lens on urban sprawl and furnishes both theoretical underpinning and empirical substantiation for the appraisal of UGB policy implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
