Search

Antiferromagnets exhibit rapid spin dynamics in a net zero magnetic background which enables novel spintronic applications and interrogation of many-body quantum phenomena. The layered antiferromagnet Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ hosts an exotic spin one-half Mott insulating state with an electronic gap arising from on-site Coulomb repulsion and strong spin-orbit coupling. This makes Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ an interesting candidate to interrogate dynamical attributes of the magnetic order using ultrafast laser pulses. We investigate the magnetization dynamics of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ following circularly-polarized photoexcitation with below-gap mid-infrared (mid-IR -- 9 $\mu m$) and above-gap near-infrared (near-IR -- 1.3 $\mu m$) pulses. In both cases, we observe excitation of a zone-center coherent magnon mode featuring a 0.5 THz oscillation in the pump-induced Kerr-rotation signal. However, only below-gap excitation exhibits a helicity dependent response and linear (quadratic) scaling of the coherent magnon amplitude with excitation fluence (electric field). Moreover, below-gap excitation has a magnon generation efficiency that is at least two orders of magnitude greater in comparison to above-gap excitation. Our analysis indicates that the helicity dependence and enhanced generation efficiency arises from a unique one-photon two-magnon coupling mechanism for magnon generation. Thus, preferential spin-photon coupling without photoexcitation of electrons permits extremely efficient magnon generation. Our results reveal new possibilities for ultrafast control of antiferromagnets.

Superconductivity usually emerges from a metallic normal state which follows the Fermi-liquid paradigm. If, in contrast, the normal state is a fractionalized non-Fermi liquid, then pairing may either eliminate fractionalization via a Higgs-type mechanism leading to a conventional superconducting state, or pairing can occur in the presence of fractionalization. Here we discuss a simple model for the latter case: Using a combination of perturbation theory and functional renormalization group, we show that the Kitaev--Kondo lattice model displays a fractionalized superconducting phase at weak Kondo coupling. This phase is characterized by Cooper pairing of conventional electronic quasiparticles, coexisting with a spin-liquid background and topological order. Depending on the sign of the Kitaev coupling, we find the pairing to be either of chiral $d$-wave or $p$-wave type for extended doping regions around the van-Hove filling. Algebraic spin liquids are quantum disordered phases of insulating magnets which exhibit fractionalized gapless excitations and power-law correlations. Quantum spin liquids in this category include the experimentally established 1D Luttinger liquid, as well as the U(1) Dirac spin liquid (DSL) which has been a focus of recent candidate materials searches. Most notably, several exchange-frustrated Heisenberg materials on the triangular lattice have shown evidence of the U(1) DSL. In this work, we measure the algebraic correlations of spin-singlet excitations in the $J_1$-$J_2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice, prompting a detailed investigation of this model's stability under spin-phonon coupling using variational Monte Carlo. As seen before in 1D spin chains, we observe a low-temperature transition from a U(1) DSL to valence bond order and predict the parameter regime where the model realizes a stable DSL ground state. To achieve this, we employ a series of finite-size scaling Ans\"atze inspired by the low-energy DSL's conformal description in terms of quantum electrodynamics, and show that emergent monopole operators drive the instability. We compare the physics of this transition to the 1D Luttinger liquid throughout our analysis. We derive the regime of stability against spin-Peierls ordering and argue that the DSL ground state might still be achievable in candidate materials, despite its tendency to valence bond solid ordering.

We report an estimation of the injected mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at energies higher than 10 EeV. The composition is inferred from an energy-dependent sky distribution of UHECR events observed by the Telescope Array surface detector by comparing it to the Large Scale Structure of the local Universe. In the case of negligible extra-galactic magnetic fields the results are consistent with a relatively heavy injected composition at E ~ 10 EeV that becomes lighter up to E ~ 100 EeV, while the composition at E > 100 EeV is very heavy. The latter is true even in the presence of highest experimentally allowed extra-galactic magnetic fields, while the composition at lower energies can be light if a strong EGMF is present. We use a new method to estimate the injected mass composition of ultrahigh cosmic rays (UHECRs) at energies higher than 10 EeV. The method is based on comparison of the energy-dependent distribution of cosmic ray arrival directions as measured by the Telescope Array experiment (TA) with that calculated in a given putative model of UHECR under the assumption that sources trace the large-scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. As we report in the companion letter, the TA data show large deflections with respect to the LSS which can be explained, assuming small extra-galactic magnetic fields (EGMF), by an intermediate composition changing to a heavy one (iron) in the highest energy bin. Here we show that these results are robust to uncertainties in UHECR injection spectra, the energy scale of the experiment and galactic magnetic fields (GMF). The assumption of weak EGMF, however, strongly affects this interpretation at all but the highest energies E > 100 EeV, where the remarkable isotropy of the data implies a heavy injected composition even in the case of strong EGMF. This result also holds if UHECR sources are as rare as $2 \times 10^{-5}$ Mpc$^{-3}$, that is the conservative lower limit for the source number density., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in PRD

Deconfined quantum critical points (DQCPs) are putative phase transitions beyond the Landau paradigm with emergent fractionalized degrees of freedom. The original example of a DQCP is the spin-1/2 quantum antiferromagnet on the square lattice which features a second order transition between valence bond solid (VBS) and N\'eel order. The VBS order breaks a lattice symmetry, and the corresponding VBS order parameter may couple to lattice distortion modes (phonons) at appropriate momenta. We investigate a field-theoretic description of the DQCP in the presence of such a spin-lattice coupling. We show that treating phonons as classical lattice distortions leads to a relevant monopole-phonon interaction inducing an instability towards a distorted lattice by an analogous mechanism to the spin-Peierls instability in one dimension. Consequently, there is a breakdown of the DQCP which generally becomes a strong first-order transition. Taking into account the full quantum nature of the phonons, we argue that the continuous DQCP persists above a critical phonon frequency. We report on an observation of the difference between northern and southern skies of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray energy spectrum with a significance of ${\sim}8\sigma$. We use measurements from the two largest experiments$\unicode{x2014}$the Telescope Array observing the northern hemisphere and the Pierre Auger Observatory viewing the southern hemisphere. Since the comparison of two measurements from different observatories introduces the issue of possible systematic differences between detectors and analyses, we validate the methodology of the comparison by examining the region of the sky where the apertures of the two observatories overlap. Although the spectra differ in this region, we find that there is only a $1.8\sigma$ difference between the spectrum measurements when anisotropic regions are removed and a fiducial cut in the aperture is applied., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The control of antiferromagnets with ultrashort optical pulses has emerged as a prominent field of research. Tailored laser excitation can launch coherent spin waves at terahertz frequencies, yet a comprehensive description of their generation mechanisms is still lacking despite extensive efforts. Using terahertz emission spectroscopy, we investigate the generation of a coherent magnon mode in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS$_3$ under a range of photoexcitation conditions. By tuning the pump photon energy from transparency to resonant with a $d$-$d$ transition, we reveal a striking change in the coherent magnon's dependence on the pump polarization, indicating two distinct excitation mechanisms. Our findings provide a strategy for the manipulation of magnetic modes via photoexcitation around sub-gap electronic states., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

The interplay of topological electronic band structures and strong interparticle interactions provides a promising path towards the constructive design of robust, long-range entangled many-body systems. As a prototype for such systems, we here study an exactly integrable, local model for a fractionalized topological insulator. Using a controlled perturbation theory about this limit, we demonstrate the existence of topological bands of zeros in the exact fermionic Green's function and show that {in this model} they do affect the topological invariant of the system, but not the quantized transport response. Close to (but prior to) the Higgs transition signaling the breakdown of fractionalization, the topological bands of zeros acquire a finite ``lifetime''. We also discuss the appearance of edge states and edge zeros at real space domain walls separating different phases of the system. This model provides a fertile ground for controlled studies of the phenomenology of Green's function zeros and the underlying exactly solvable lattice gauge theory illustrates the synergetic cross-pollination between solid-state theory, high-energy physics and quantum information science., Comment: 5 papges, 9 pages supplement, 5 figures

We investigate the phase diagram of a bilayer Kitaev honeycomb model with Ising interlayer interactions, deriving effective models via perturbation theory and performing Majorana mean-field theory calculations. We show that a diverse array of magnetic and topological phase transitions occur, depending on the direction of the interlayer Ising interaction and the relative sign of Kitaev interactions. When two layers have the same sign of the Kitaev interaction, a first-order transition from a Kitaev spin liquid to a magnetically ordered state takes place. The magnetic order points along the Ising axis and it is (anti)ferromagnetic for (anti)ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions. However, when two layers have opposite sign of the Kitaev interaction, we observe a notable weakening of magnetic ordering tendencies and the Kitaev spin liquid survives up to a remarkably larger interlayer exchange. Our mean-field analysis suggests the emergence of an intermediate gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid state, which eventually becomes unstable upon vison condensation. The confined phase is described by a highly frustrated $120^\circ$ compass model. We furthermore use perturbation theory to study the model with the Ising axis pointing along $\hat{z}$-axis or lying in the $xy$-plane. In both cases, our analysis reveals the formation of 1D Ising chains, which remain decoupled in perturbation theory, resulting in a subextensive ground-state degeneracy. In this work, we study a slave-rotor mean-field theory of an extended Hubbard model, applicable to transition metal dichalcogenide moir\'e systems, that captures both the formation of Wigner crystals as well as exotic spin states on top of these charge backgrounds. Phase diagrams are mapped out for different choices of long-range Coulomb repulsion strength, reproducing several experimentally found Wigner crystal states. Assuming unbroken time reversal symmetry, we find several spin liquid states as well as dimer states at fractional fillings. While spin dimer states are always found to have the lowest mean field energy, several spin liquid states are energetically competitive and may be stabilized by including gauge fluctuations or further interaction terms. We study the effect of electric stress, gas pressure and gas type on the hysteresis in the transfer characteristics of monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) field effect transistors. The presence of defects and point vacancies in the MoS2 crystal structure facilitates the adsorption of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen or methane, which strongly affect the transistor electrical characteristics. Although the gas adsorption does not modify the conduction type, we demonstrate a correlation between hysteresis width and adsorption energy onto the MoS2 surface. We show that hysteresis is controllable by pressure and/or gas type. Hysteresis features two well-separated current levels, especially when gases are stably adsorbed on the channel, which can be exploited in memory devices., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Moir\'e heterostructures of transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit Mott-insulating behaviour both at half-filling as well as at fractional fillings, where electronic degrees of freedom form self-organized Wigner crystal states. An open question concerns magnetic states obtained by lifting the pseudospin-1/2 degeneracy of these states at lowest temperatures. While at half-filling virtual hopping is expected to induce (weak) antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, these are strongly suppressed when considering $\textit{dilute}$ filling fractions. We argue that instead a small concentration of doped electrons leads to the formation of spin-polarons, inducing ferromagnetic order at experimentally relevant temperatures. After over 60 years, the powerful engines that accelerate ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) to the formidable energies at which we observe them from Earth remain mysterious. Assuming standard physics, we expect UHECR sources to lie within the local Universe (up to a few hundred~Mpc). The distribution of matter in the local Universe is anisotropic, and we expect this anisotropy to be imprinted on the distribution of UHECR arrival directions. Even though intervening intergalactic and Galactic magnetic fields deflect charged UHECRs and can distort these anisotropies, some amount of information on the distribution of the sources is preserved. In this proceedings contribution, we present the results of the joint Pierre Auger Observatory and Telescope Array searches for (a) the largest-scale anisotropies (the harmonic dipole and quadrupole) and (b) correlations with a sample of nearby starburst galaxies and the 2MRS catalogue tracing stellar mass within~250~Mpc. This analysis updates our previous results with the most recent available data, notably with the addition of 3~years of new Telescope Array data. The main finding is a correlation between the arrival directions of $12.1\%_{-3.1\%}^{+4.5\%}$~of UHECRs detected with $E \geq 38$~EeV by~Auger or with~$E \gtrsim 49$~EeV by~TA and the positions of nearby starburst galaxies on a ${15.1\text{deg}}_{-3.0\text{deg}}^{+4.6\text{deg}}$~angular scale, with a $4.7\sigma$~post-trial significance, up from $4.2\sigma$ obtained in our previous study., Comment: proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR2022), 3-7 October 2022, L'Aquila, Italy

In this paper, we present the first high-speed video observation of a cloud-to-ground lightning flash and its associated downward-directed Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flash (TGF). The optical emission of the event was observed by a high-speed video camera running at 40,000 frames per second in conjunction with the Telescope Array Surface Detector, Lightning Mapping Array, interferometer, electric-field fast antenna, and the National Lightning Detection Network. The cloud-to-ground flash associated with the observed TGF was formed by a fast downward leader followed by a very intense return stroke peak current of -154 kA. The TGF occurred while the downward leader was below cloud base, and even when it was halfway in its propagation to ground. The suite of gamma-ray and lightning instruments, timing resolution, and source proximity offer us detailed information and therefore a unique look at the TGF phenomena.

When two layers of two-dimensional materials are assembled with a relative twist, moir\'e patterns arise, inducing a tremendous wealth of exotic phenomena. In this work, we consider twisting two triangular lattices hosting Dirac quantum spin liquids. A single decoupled layer is described by compact quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions (QED$_3$) with an emergent $\mathrm{U}(1)$ gauge field, which is assumed to flow to a strongly interacting fixed point in the IR with conformal symmetry. We use recent results for the quantum numbers of monopole operators, which tunnel $2 \pi$ fluxes of the compact gauge field. It is found that, in the bilayer system, interlayer monopole tunneling is a symmetry-allowed relevant perturbation which induces an (ordering) instability. We show using perturbation theory that upon twisting the two layers the system remains unstable under the interlayer interaction, but any finite twist angle softens this instability compared to the untwisted case. To analyse the resulting phase induced by the (twisted) interlayer tunneling, we use "conformal mean field theory", which reduces the interacting bilayer system to two copies of QED$_3$ coupled to background fields which are to be determined self-consistently. In the weak-coupling regime, where the interlayer coupling is weak compared to the energy scale set by the moir\'e lattice constant, we solve the self-consistency equations perturbatively. In the limit of strongly coupled layers, a local scaling approximation is used, and we find that the magnetically ordered state exhibits a lattice of magnetic vortices, with the lattice constant tunable through the twisting angle., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures; v2 (added new Section IV on conformal perturbation theory, and several additional remarks)

The $S=1$ bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg exchange model on the triangular lattice with a single-ion anisotropy has previously been shown to host a number of exotic magnetic and nematic orders [Moreno-Cardoner $\textit{et al.}$, Phys. Rev. B $\textbf{90}$, 144409 (2014)], including an extensive region of "supersolid" order. In this work, we amend the model by an XXZ anisotropy in the exchange interactions. Tuning to the limit of an exactly solvable $S=1$ generalized Ising-/Blume-Capel-type model provides a controlled limit to access phases at finite transverse exchange. Notably, we find an additional macroscopically degenerate region in the phase diagram and study its fate under perturbation theory. We further map out phase diagrams as a function of the XXZ anisotropy parameter, ratio of bilinear and biquadratic interactions and single-ion anisotropy, and compute corrections to the total ordered moment in various phases using systematically constructed linear flavor-wave theory. We also present linear flavor-wave spectra of various states, finding that the lowest-energy band in three-sublattice generalized (i.e. with $S^z=\pm1,0$) Ising/Blume-Capel states, stabilized by strong exchange anisotropies, is remarkably flat, opening up the way to flat-band engineering of magnetic excitation via stabilizing non-trivial Ising-ordered ground states., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

For several decades, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) has been an unsolved question of high-energy astrophysics. One approach for solving this puzzle is to correlate UHECRs with high-energy neutrinos, since neutrinos are a direct probe of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays and are not deflected by magnetic fields. In this paper, we present three different approaches for correlating the arrival directions of neutrinos with the arrival directions of UHECRs. The neutrino data is provided by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and ANTARES, while the UHECR data with energies above $\sim$50 EeV is provided by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. All experiments provide increased statistics and improved reconstructions with respect to our previous results reported in 2015. The first analysis uses a high-statistics neutrino sample optimized for point-source searches to search for excesses of neutrinos clustering in the vicinity of UHECR directions. The second analysis searches for an excess of UHECRs in the direction of the highest-energy neutrinos. The third analysis searches for an excess of pairs of UHECRs and highest-energy neutrinos on different angular scales. None of the analyses has found a significant excess, and previously reported over-fluctuations are reduced in significance. We present the first observation by the Telescope Array Surface Detector (TASD) of the effect of thunderstorms on the development of cosmic ray single count rate intensity over a 700 km$^{2}$ area. Observations of variations in the secondary low-energy cosmic ray counting rate, using the TASD, allow us to study the electric field inside thunderstorms, on a large scale, as it progresses on top of the 700 km$^{2}$ detector, without dealing with the limitation of narrow exposure in time and space using balloons and aircraft detectors. In this work, variations in the cosmic ray intensity (single count rate) using the TASD, were studied and found to be on average at the $\sim(0.5-1)\%$ and up to 2\% level. These observations were found to be both in excess and in deficit. They were also found to be correlated with lightning in addition to thunderstorms. These variations lasted for tens of minutes; their footprint on the ground ranged from 6 to 24 km in diameter and moved in the same direction as the thunderstorm. With the use of simple electric field models inside the cloud and between cloud to ground, the observed variations in the cosmic ray single count rate were recreated using CORSIKA simulations. Depending on the electric field model used and the direction of the electric field in that model, the electric field magnitude that reproduces the observed low-energy cosmic ray single count rate variations was found to be approximately between 0.2-0.4 GV. This in turn allows us to get a reasonable insight on the electric field and its effect on cosmic ray air showers inside thunderstorms.

The exploration of the universe has recently entered a new era thanks to the multi-messenger paradigm, characterized by a continuous increase in the quantity and quality of experimental data that is obtained by the detection of the various cosmic messengers (photons, neutrinos, cosmic rays and gravitational waves) from numerous origins. They give us information about their sources in the universe and the properties of the intergalactic medium. Moreover, multi-messenger astronomy opens up the possibility to search for phenomenological signatures of quantum gravity. On the one hand, the most energetic events allow us to test our physical theories at energy regimes which are not directly accessible in accelerators; on the other hand, tiny effects in the propagation of very high energy particles could be amplified by cosmological distances. After decades of merely theoretical investigations, the possibility of obtaining phenomenological indications of Planck-scale effects is a revolutionary step in the quest for a quantum theory of gravity, but it requires cooperation between different communities of physicists (both theoretical and experimental). This review is aimed at promoting this cooperation by giving a state-of-the art account of the interdisciplinary expertise that is needed in the effective search of quantum gravity footprints in the production, propagation and detection of cosmic messengers., Comment: This review was written by participants of the COST Action CA18108. Optical pump-probe experiments carried out in the time domain reveal both the intrinsic low energy dynamics and its connections to higher energy excitations in correlated electron systems. In this work, we propose two microscopic mechanisms for the optical generation of coherent magnetic modes in van der Waals magnets, and derive the corresponding effective light-spin interactions: either through pumping atomic orbital excitations resonantly or via a light-induced Floquet spin Hamiltonian, the ground state of the system is driven out of equilibrium. The subsequent long-time relaxational dynamics can then be probed using, e.g. the magneto-optical Kerr effect or transient grating spectroscopy. As an example, we apply our framework to NiPS$_3$, which is magnetically ordered in the bulk, and is conjectured to realize the XY model in the monolayer limit. Our theory makes explicit how the material's low-energy response depends sensitively on the microscopic details of the light-spin coupling as well as pump fluence, frequency and polarization. For the case of bulk NiPS$_3$, we find quantitative agreement with recent experiments by Afanasiev et al. [Science Advances 7, abf3096 (2021)]. We further propose pump-probe experiments for monolayer NiPS$_3$ and detail how anomalous relaxational behaviour may reveal excitations of a (proximate) BKT phase in a proposed effective XY model., Comment: 15+6 pages, 5 figures; v2 (added Fig. 1, clarifying comments in Sec. We study the zero-temperature phase diagrams of Majorana-Hubbard models with SO($N$) symmetry on two-dimensional honeycomb and $\pi$-flux square lattices, using mean-field and renormalization group approaches. The models can be understood as real counterparts of the SU($N$) Hubbard-Heisenberg models, and may be realized in Abrikosov vortex phases of topological superconductors, or in fractionalized phases of strongly-frustrated spin-orbital magnets. In the weakly-interacting limit, the models feature stable and fully symmetric Majorana semimetal phases. Increasing the interaction strength beyond a finite threshold for large $N$, we find a direct transition towards dimerized phases, which can be understood as staggered valence bond solid orders, in which part of the lattice symmetry is spontaneously broken and the Majorana fermions acquire a mass gap. For small to intermediate $N$, on the other hand, phases with spontaneously broken SO($N$) symmetry, which can be understood as generalized N\'eel antiferromagnets, may be stabilized. These antiferromagnetic phases feature fully gapped fermion spectra for even $N$, but gapless Majorana modes for odd $N$. While the transitions between Majorana semimetal and dimerized phases are strongly first order, the transitions between Majorana semimetal and antiferromagnetic phases are continuous for small $N \leq 3$ and weakly first order for intermediate $N \geq 4$. The weakly-first-order nature of the latter transitions arises from fixed-point annihilation in the corresponding effective field theory, which contains a real symmetric tensorial order parameter coupled to the gapless Majorana degrees of freedom, realizing interesting examples of fluctuation-induced first-order transitions., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

The Telescope Array Collaboration has observed an excess of events with $E \ge 10^{19.4} ~{\rm eV}$ in the data which is centered at (RA, dec) = ($19^\circ$, $35^\circ$). This is near the center of the Perseus-Pisces supercluster (PPSC). The PPSC is about $70 ~{\rm Mpc}$ distant and is the closest supercluster in the Northern Hemisphere (other than the Virgo supercluster of which we are a part). A Li-Ma oversampling analysis with $20^\circ$-radius circles indicates an excess in the arrival direction of events with a local significance of about 4 standard deviations. The probability of having such excess close to the PPSC by chance is estimated to be 3.5 standard deviations. This result indicates that a cosmic ray source likely exists in that supercluster., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Astroparticle physics is undergoing a profound transformation, due to a series of extraordinary new results, such as the discovery of high-energy cosmic neutrinos with IceCube, the direct detection of gravitational waves with LIGO and Virgo, and many others. This white paper is the result of a collaborative effort that involved hundreds of theoretical astroparticle physicists and cosmologists, under the coordination of the European Consortium for Astroparticle Theory (EuCAPT). Telescope Array (TA) is the largest ultrahigh energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) observatory in the Northern Hemisphere. It explores the origin of UHECRs by measuring their energy spectrum, arrival-direction distribution, and mass composition using a surface detector (SD) array covering approximately 700 km$^2$ and fluorescence detector (FD) stations. TA has found evidence for a cluster of cosmic rays with energies greater than 57 EeV. In order to confirm this evidence with more data, it is necessary to increase the data collection rate.We have begun building an expansion of TA that we call TAx4. In this paper, we explain the motivation, design, technical features, and expected performance of the TAx4 SD. Spin-orbital liquids are quantum disordered states in systems with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom. We study exactly solvable spin-orbital models in two dimensions with selected Heisenberg-, Kitaev-, and $\Gamma$-type interactions, as well as external magnetic fields. These models realize a variety of spin-orbital-liquid phases featuring dispersing Majorana fermions with Fermi surfaces, nodal Dirac or quadratic band touching points, or full gaps. In particular, we show that Zeeman magnetic fields can stabilize nontrivial flux patterns and induce metamagnetic transitions between states with different topological character. Solvable nearest-neighbor biquadratic spin-orbital perturbations can be tuned to stabilize zero-energy flat bands. We discuss in detail the examples of $\mathrm{SO}(2)$- and $\mathrm{SO}(3)$-symmetric spin-orbital models on the square and honeycomb lattices, and use group-theoretical arguments to generalize to $\mathrm{SO}(\nu)$-symmetric models with arbitrary integer $\nu > 1$. These results extend the list of exactly solvable models with spin-orbital-liquid ground states and highlight the intriguing general features of such exotic phases. In this paper we report the first close, high-resolution observations of downward-directed terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) detected by the large-area Telescope Array cosmic ray observatory, obtained in conjunction with broadband VHF interferometer and fast electric field change measurements of the parent discharge. The results show that the TGFs occur during strong initial breakdown pulses (IBPs) in the first few milliseconds of negative cloud-to-ground and low-altitude intracloud flashes, and that the IBPs are produced by a newly-identified streamer-based discharge process called fast negative breakdown. The observations indicate the relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREAs) responsible for producing the TGFs are initiated by embedded spark-like transient conducting events (TCEs) within the fast streamer system, and potentially also by individual fast streamers themselves. The TCEs are inferred to be the cause of impulsive sub-pulses that are characteristic features of classic IBP sferics. Additional development of the avalanches would be facilitated by the enhanced electric field ahead of the advancing front of the fast negative breakdown. In addition to showing the nature of IBPs and their enigmatic sub-pulses, the observations also provide a possible explanation for the unsolved question of how the streamer to leader transition occurs during the initial negative breakdown, namely as a result of strong currents flowing in the final stage of successive IBPs, extending backward through both the IBP itself and the negative streamer breakdown preceding the IBP., Comment: Typo fixed and reference added. We study transitions between topological phases featuring emergent fractionalized excitations in two-dimensional models for Mott insulators with spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The models realize fermionic quantum critical points in fractionalized Gross-Neveu$^\ast$ universality classes in (2+1) dimensions. They are characterized by the same set of critical exponents as their ordinary Gross-Neveu counterparts, but feature a different energy spectrum, reflecting the nontrivial topology of the adjacent phases. We exemplify this in a square-lattice model, for which an exact mapping to a $t$-$V$ model of spinless fermions allows us to make use of large-scale numerical results, as well as in a honeycomb-lattice model, for which we employ $\epsilon$-expansion and large-$N$ methods to estimate the critical behavior. Motivated by the detection of a significant dipole structure in the arrival directions of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays above 8 EeV reported by the Pierre Auger Observatory (Auger), we search for a large-scale anisotropy using data collected with the surface detector array of the Telescope Array Experiment (TA). With 11 years of TA data, a dipole structure in a projection of the right ascension is fitted with an amplitude of 3.3+- 1.9% and a phase of 131 +- 33 degrees. The corresponding 99% confidence-level upper limit on the amplitude is 7.3%. We fabricate monolayer MoS2 field effect transistors and study their electric characteristics from 10^-6 Torr to atmospheric air pressure. We show that the threshold voltage of the transistor increases with the growing pressure. Hence, we propose the device as an air pressure sensor, showing that it is particularly suitable as a low power consumption vacuum gauge. Ultra high energy cosmic rays provide the highest known energy source in the universe to measure proton cross sections. Though conditions for collecting such data are less controlled than an accelerator environment, current generation cosmic ray observatories have large enough exposures to collect significant statistics for a reliable measurement for energies above what can be attained in the lab. Cosmic ray measurements of cross section use atmospheric calorimetry to measure depth of air shower maximum ($X_{\mathrm{max}}$), which is related to the primary particle's energy and mass. The tail of the $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ distribution is assumed to be dominated by showers generated by protons, allowing measurement of the inelastic proton-air cross section. In this work the proton-air inelastic cross section measurement, $\sigma^{\mathrm{inel}}_{\mathrm{p-air}}$, using data observed by Telescope Array's Black Rock Mesa and Long Ridge fluorescence detectors and surface detector array in hybrid mode is presented. $\sigma^{\mathrm{inel}}_{\mathrm{p-air}}$ is observed to be $520.1 \pm 35.8$[Stat.] $^{+25.0}_{-40}$[Sys.]~mb at $\sqrt{s} = 73$ TeV. The total proton-proton cross section is subsequently inferred from Glauber formalism and is found to be $\sigma^{\mathrm{tot}}_{\mathrm{pp}} = 139.4 ^{+23.4}_{-21.3}$ [Stat.]$ ^{+15.0}_{-24.0}$[Sys.]~mb.

In two dimensions, the topological order described by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory coupled to free or weakly interacting fermions with a nonzero spectral Chern number $\nu$ is classified by $\nu \; \mathrm{mod}\; 16$ as predicted by Kitaev [Ann. Phys. 321, 2 (2006)]. Here we provide a systematic and complete construction of microscopic models realizing this so-called sixteenfold way of anyon theories. These models are defined by $\Gamma$ matrices satisfying the Clifford algebra, enjoy a global $\mathrm{SO}(\nu)$ symmetry, and live on either square or honeycomb lattices depending on the parity of $\nu$. We show that all these models are exactly solvable by using a Majorana representation and characterize the topological order by calculating the topological spin of an anyonic quasiparticle and the ground-state degeneracy. Evidence for a large-scale supergalactic cosmic ray multiplet (arrival directions correlated with energy) structure is reported for ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) energies above 10$^{19}$ eV using seven years of data from the Telescope Array (TA) surface detector and updated to 10 years. Previous energy-position correlation studies have made assumptions regarding magnetic field shapes and strength, and UHECR composition. Here the assumption tested is that, since the supergalactic plane is a fit to the average matter density of the local Large Scale Structure (LSS), UHECR sources and intervening extragalactic magnetic fields are correlated with this plane. This supergalactic deflection hypothesis is tested by the entire field-of-view (FOV) behavior of the strength of intermediate-scale energy-angle correlations. These multiplets are measured in spherical cap section bins (wedges) of the FOV to account for coherent and random magnetic fields. The structure found is consistent with supergalactic deflection, the previously published energy spectrum anisotropy results of TA (the hotspot and coldspot), and toy-model simulations of a supergalactic magnetic sheet. The seven year data post-trial significance of this supergalactic structure of multiplets appearing by chance, on an isotropic sky, is found by Monte Carlo simulation to be 4.2$\sigma$. The ten years of data post-trial significance is 4.1$\sigma$. Furthermore, the starburst galaxy M82 is shown to be a possible source of the TA Hotspot, and an estimate of the supergalactic magnetic field using UHECR measurements is presented.

This work deals with the electron beam irradiation of the Schottky metal contacts in monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) field-effect transistors (FETs). We show that the exposure of the Ti/Au source/drain leads to an electron beam improves the transistor conductance. We simulate the path of the electrons in the device and show that most of the beam energy is absorbed in the metal contacts. Hence, we propose that the transistor current enhancement is due to thermally induced interfacial reactions that lower the contact Schottky barriers. We also show that the electron beam conditioning of contacts is permanent, while the irradiation of the channel can produce transient effects.

Palladium diselenide (PdSe2) is a recently isolated layered material that has attracted a lot of interest for the pentagonal structure, the air stability and the electrical properties largely tunable by the number of layers. In this work, PdSe2 is used in the form of multilayer as the channel of back-gate field-effect transistors, which are studied under repeated electron irradiations. Source-drain Pd leads enable contacts with resistance below 350 kOhm um. The transistors exhibit a prevailing n-type conduction in high vacuum, which reversibly turns into ambipolar electric transport at atmospheric pressure. Irradiation by 10 keV electrons suppresses the channel conductance and promptly transforms the device from n-type to p-type. An electron fluence as low as 160 e-/nm2 dramatically change the transistor behavior demonstrating a high sensitivity of PdSe2 to electron irradiation. The sensitivity is lost after few exposures, that is a saturation condition is reached for fluence higher than 4000 e-/nm2. The damage induced by high electron fluence is irreversible as the device persist in the radiation-modified state for several hours, if kept in vacuum and at room temperature. With the support of numerical simulation, we explain such a behavior by electron-induced Se atom vacancy formation and charge trapping in slow trap states at the Si/SiO_2 interface., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

We study the electrical transport in back-gate field-effect transistors with ultrathin palladium diselenide (PdSe2) channel. The devices are normally-on and exhibit dominant n-type conduction at low pressure. The electron conduction, combined with the sharp edge and the workfunction decreasing with the number of layers, opens the way to applications of PdSe2 nanosheets in vacuum electronics. In this work, we demonstrate field emission from few-layer PdSe2 nanosheets with current up to the uA and turn-on field below 100 V/um, thus extending the plethora of applications of this recently isolated pentagonal layered material., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We present an upper limit on the flux of ultra-high-energy down-going neutrinos for $E > 10^{18}\ \mbox{eV}$ derived with the nine years of data collected by the Telescope Array surface detector (05-11-2008 -- 05-10-2017). We study the interaction of a (classical) light field with the magnetic degrees of freedom in the two-dimensional antiferromagnet Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. The reduced space group symmetry of the crystal allows for several channels for spin-operator bilinears to couple to the electric field. Integrating out high-energy degrees of freedom in a Keldysh framework, we derive induced effective fields which enter the equations of motion of the low-energy mode of in-plane rotations which couple to the out-of-plane magnetization. Considering a pump-probe protocol, these induced fields excite magnetization oscillations which can subsequently probed, e.g. using Kerr rotation. We discuss how the induced fields depend on polarization and frequency of the driving light, and our study applies to both resonant and non-resonant regimes. Crucially, the induced fields depend on the two-magnon density of states, thus allowing for further insight into properties of the magnetic excitation spectrum. Furthermore, these effects rely upon (weak) magnon-interactions, and so are beyond a "Floquet magnon" description., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. The surface detector (SD) of the Telescope Array (TA) experiment allows one to indirectly detect photons with energies of order $10^{18}$ eV and higher and to separate photons from the cosmic-ray background. In this paper we present the results of a blind search for point sources of ultra-high energy (UHE) photons in the Northern sky using the TA SD data. The photon-induced extensive air showers (EAS) are separated from the hadron-induced EAS background by means of a multivariate classifier based upon 16 parameters that characterize the air shower events. No significant evidence for the photon point sources is found. The upper limits are set on the flux of photons from each particular direction in the sky within the TA field of view, according to the experiment's angular resolution for photons. Average 95% C.L. upper limits for the point-source flux of photons with energies greater than $10^{18}$, $10^{18.5}$, $10^{19}$, $10^{19.5}$ and $10^{20}$ eV are $0.094$, $0.029$, $0.010$, $0.0073$ and $0.0058$ km$^{-2}$yr$^{-1}$ respectively. For the energies higher than $10^{18.5}$ eV, the photon point-source limits are set for the first time. Recent numerical results [Gonzalez $\textit{et al.}$, Phys. Rev. Lett. $\textbf{122}$, 017201 (2019); Shimada $\textit{et al.}$, J. Phys. Conf. Ser. $\textbf{969}$, 012126 (2018)] point to the existence of a partial-disorder ground state for a spin-1/2 antiferromagnet on the stuffed honeycomb lattice, with 2/3 of the local moments ordering in an antiferromagnetic N\'eel pattern, while the remaining 1/3 of the sites display short-range correlations only, akin to a quantum spin liquid. We derive an effective model for this disordered subsystem, by integrating out fluctuations of the ordered local moments, which yield couplings in a formal $1/S$ expansion, with $S$ being the spin amplitude. The result is an effective triangular-lattice XXZ model, with planar ferromagnetic order for large $S$ and a stripe-ordered Ising ground state for small $S$, the latter being the result of frustrated Ising interactions. Within the semiclassical analysis, the transition point between the two orders is located at $S_c=0.646$, being very close to the relevant case $S=1/2$. Near $S=S_c$ quantum fluctuations tend to destabilize magnetic order. We present the results of the search for ultra-high-energy photons with nine years of data from the Telescope Array surface detector. A multivariate classifier is built upon 16 reconstructed parameters of the extensive air shower. These parameters are related to the curvature and the width of the shower front, the steepness of the lateral distribution function, and the timing parameters of the waveforms sensitive to the shower muon content. A total number of two photon candidates found in the search is fully compatible with the expected background. The $95\%\,$CL limits on the diffuse flux of the photons with energies greater than $10^{18.0}$, $10^{18.5}$, $10^{19.0}$, $10^{19.5}$ and $10^{20.0}$ eV are set at the level of $0.067$, $0.012$, $0.0036$, $0.0013$, $0.0013~\mbox{km}^{-2}\mbox{yr}^{-1}\mbox{sr}^{-1}$ correspondingly., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

The Pierre Auger Collaboration (Auger) recently reported a correlation between the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energies above 39 EeV and the flux pattern of 23 nearby starburst galaxies (SBGs). In this Letter, we tested the same hypothesis using cosmic rays detected by the Telescope Array experiment (TA) in the 9-year period from May 2008 to May 2017. Unlike the Auger analysis, we did not optimize the parameter values but kept them fixed to the best-fit values found by Auger, namely 9.7% for the anisotropic fraction of cosmic rays assumed to originate from the SBGs in the list and 12.9{\deg} for the angular scale of the correlations. The energy threshold we adopted is 43 EeV, corresponding to 39 EeV in Auger when taking into account the energy-scale difference between two experiments. We find that the TA data is compatible with isotropy to within 1.1{\sigma} and with the Auger result to within 1.4{\sigma}, meaning that it is not capable to discriminate between these two hypotheses., Comment: More accurate title, fixed an inconsistency in the declination range used, with a few figures slightly changing as a result, other minor revisions
