Particle dark matter could belong to a multiplet that includes an electrically charged state. WIMP dark matter (χ0) accompanied by a negatively charged excited state (χ−) with a small mass difference (e.g. < 20 MeV) can form a bound-state with a nucleus such as xenon. This bound-state formation is rare and the released energy is O(1−10) MeV depending on the nucleus, making large liquid scintillator detectors suitable for detection. We searched for bound-state formation events with xenon in two experimental phases of the KamLAND-Zen experiment, a xenon-doped liquid scintillator detector. No statistically significant events were observed. For a benchmark parameter set of WIMP mass mχ0=1 TeV and mass difference Δm=17 MeV, we set the most stringent upper limits on the recombination cross section times velocity 〈σv〉 and the decay-width of χ− to 9.2×10−30 cm3/s and 8.7×10−14 GeV, respectively at 90% confidence level.

We make aesthetic judgments on a daily basis. While we think of these judgments as highly personal, they are often shaped by social context. This poses a computational problem: how do we combine social information and our individual judgments to produce a single evaluation? In this study, we examine social influence on aesthetic evaluations in online transmission chain experiments. We test not only the effect of social information, but also variation in effect depending on how information is presented--echoing the variety of interfaces we encounter in naturalistic cases. We find that social information significantly affects ratings across interfaces.Moreover, people tend to rely more heavily on their own judgment than on social information, compared to an ideally noise-reducing model for combining multiple signals. These results offer detailed insight into the formation of aesthetic judgment and suggest the need for extended investigation into social influence on subjective judgments more broadly.

A 75-year-old male, weighing 71 kg, was admitted to our institution with anemia related to a subcapsular hematoma after accidental extraction of a nephrostomy catheter. While the patient exhibited the progression of chronic kidney disease, he was not yet on dialysis. His serum creatinine level increased to 6.8 mg/dL, with an estimated glomerular filtration rate of 7.4 mL/min/1.73 m2. Radiologists planned contrast-enhanced photon-counting detector CT (PCD-CT) with an ultra-low-dose contrast media to mitigate the impact on renal function. The contrast media dosage was set at 7.4 gI, which was 82.6% lower that used in the standard protocol for a male weighing 71 kg. Non-contrast-enhanced PCD-CT identified a low-density nodular area within the renal subcapsular hematoma. Contrast-enhanced PCD-CT revealed contrast enhancement in both the early and late phases corresponding to the nodular area. On virtual monoenergetic images, the renal pseudoaneurysm was most clearly delineated at 40 keV. Following the diagnosis of a pseudoaneurysm, transcatheter arterial coil embolization was performed. No subsequent progression of anemia or the deterioration of renal function was observed, showcasing the potential of ultra-low-dose contrast-enhanced PCD-CT for the detection of small vascular abnormalities while minimizing adverse effects on renal function.

Isolated cortical vein thrombosis (ICVT) is a rarer subtype of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) that involves only the cortical veins without any thrombosis in the major cerebral veins or sinuses. Among the known causes of CVST are factors, such as being a young female or the use of hormonal preparations. This study presents a case of a 35-year-old female who underwent endometrial polyp removal 5 days before symptom onset and started using a transdermal estradiol patch. After 4 days of using the transdermal estradiol patch, the patient developed recurrent seizures and sustained sensory aphasia. The head computed tomography revealed hemorrhagic infarction. Given her young age and the use of hormonal therapy, CVST was suspected. However, the initial diagnosis with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was inconclusive, and no venous sinus thrombosis could be identified on additional cerebral angiography. Instead, stasis of venous flow in the temporal vein was noted. It was difficult to determine whether these findings were due to hemorrhage or ICVT. Upon re-evaluation with MRI, signal changes suggestive of thrombosis in a cortical vein in the parietal region, which is different from the stasis observed in cerebral angiography, led to the diagnosis of ICVT. This is the first study to link the use of transdermal estradiol patches to ICVT. In cases where ICVT leads to cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral angiography may not be useful. Instead, a comprehensive diagnosis should be made based on imaging findings from various MRI sequences and the patient's medical history.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a major malignant salivary gland tumor that usually forms a solid tumor. Non-necrotic macrocystic SDCs have rarely been reported among salivary gland tumors. A 78-year-old Japanese man with a submandibular gland tumor was evaluated radiologically, pathologically, and immunohistochemically. A multilocular lesion with a maximum size of 6 cm was radiologically observed in the left submandibular region. It had been noticed 20 years earlier. Malignant cytological result was obtained, and surgical resection was performed. Pathological examination revealed a non-necrotic, macrocystic submandibular gland tumor lined with glandular, cribriform, or papillary forms of atypical cuboidal cells. Frankly invasive components were observed in intercystic areas. Intraductal, mucoepidermoid, and secretory carcinomas were identified as pathological differential diagnoses because of their macrocystic morphology. We diagnosed SDC because there was no intraductal growth based on the lack of myoepithelial markers, diffuse immunoreactivity to gross cystic disease fluid protein15, androgen receptor, and mammaglobin and immunonegativity to S100 and p63. Postoperative positron emission tomography revealed the absence of lymph node and distant metastases. The patient was disease-free 9 months after surgery. Salivary duct carcinoma can be included in the differential diagnoses of cystic salivary gland tumors.

Abstract Diabetes involves the death or dysfunction of pancreatic β-cells. Analysis of bulk sequencing from human samples and studies using in vitro and in vivo models suggest that endoplasmic reticulum and inflammatory signaling play an important role in diabetes progression. To better characterize cell type-specific stress response, we perform multiplexed single-cell RNA sequencing to define the transcriptional signature of primary human islet cells exposed to endoplasmic reticulum and inflammatory stress. Through comprehensive pair-wise analysis of stress responses across pancreatic endocrine and exocrine cell types, we define changes in gene expression for each cell type under different diabetes-associated stressors. We find that β-, α-, and ductal cells have the greatest transcriptional response. We utilize stem cell-derived islets to study islet health through the candidate gene CIB1, which was upregulated under stress in primary human islets. Our findings provide insights into cell type-specific responses to diabetes-associated stress and establish a resource to identify targets for diabetes therapeutics.

A 77-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a 2-week history of fever, headache, and induration along the bilateral superficial temporal arteries (STAs). The color Doppler ultrasonography of the STA showed a hypoechoic mural thickening surrounding a residual color flow. A contrast-enhanced photon-counting detector (PCD) CT demonstrated mural thickening and stenosis of the bilateral STAs. The patient underwent a biopsy of the right STA. Histopathological findings were consistent with giant cell arteritis (GCA). The patient's symptoms were temporarily relieved after initiation of steroid treatment, but jaw claudication occurred 2 months later. Contrast-enhanced CT showed improved vascular abnormalities of the STAs but new mural thickening and stenosis of the bilateral maxillary artery. Due to its higher resolution, image contrast, and lower noise, PCD-CT may have great potential in detecting, diagnosing, and monitoring GCA.

Background: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an alphavirus (genus Alphavirus, family Togaviridae) that is primarily transmitted to humans by Aedes mosquitoes, and can be transmitted from mother to child. Little is known about CHIKV transmission in Vietnam, where dengue is endemic and Aedes mosquitoes are abundant. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of vertical CHIKV infection in a birth cohort, and seroprevalence of anti-CHIKV antibodies with or without confirmation by neutralization tests among women bearing children in Vietnam. Methods: We collected umbilical cord blood plasma samples from each newly delivered baby in Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, between July 2017 and September 2018. Samples were subjected to molecular assay (quantitative real-time RT-PCR) and serological tests (anti-CHIKV IgM capture and IgG indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and neutralization tests). Results: Of the 2012 tested cord blood samples from newly delivered babies, the CHIKV viral genome was detected in 6 (0.3%) samples by RT-PCR, whereas, 15 samples (0.7%) were anti-CHIKV-IgM positive. Overall, 18 (0.9%, 95% CI: 0.6–1.5) samples, including three positives for both CHIKV IgM and viral genome on RT-PCR, were regarded as vertical transmission of CHIKV infection. Of the 2012 cord blood samples, 10 (0.5%, 95% CI: 0.2–0.9) were positive for both anti-CHIKV IgM and IgG. Twenty-nine (1.4%, 95% CI: 1.0–2.1) were seropositive for anti-CHIKV IgG while 26 (1.3%, 95% CI: 0.8–1.9) of them were also positive for neutralizing antibodies, and regarded as seropositive with neutralization against CHIKV infection. Conclusion: This is the first report of a possible CHIKV maternal-neonatal infection in a birth cohort in Vietnam. The findings indicate that follow-up and a differential diagnosis of CHIKV infection in pregnant women are needed to clarify the potential for CHIKV vertical transmission and its impact in the newborn.

In the lives of those who are the target of community health nursing, it is important to collaborate with individuals and communities to improve their quality of life. Herein, we aimed to determine the association between Internet use among older individuals and locomotive syndrome (LS), frailty, and sarcopenia. In this cross-sectional study conducted between July 2022 and March 2023, we recruited 105 community-dwelling older Japanese adults who participated in a care prevention project called “Kayoi-no-ba”. All participants were divided into Internet and non-Internet user groups according to the classification of a previous study. We assessed LS (standing test, two-step test, and five-question Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale), frailty (through the Questionnaire for Medical Checkup of Old-Old), and sarcopenia (grip strength, normal walking speed, and skeletal muscle mass index) and made group comparisons between Internet users and non-users. Binomial logistic regression analyses were performed with Internet use as the independent variable and sarcopenia or LS as the dependent variables. The Internet and non-Internet user groups had 69 and 36 participants, respectively. The Internet user group comprised 65.7% of all participants, which was similar to that reported in a previous study of the same age group. Between-group comparisons showed significant differences in sarcopenia and LS items, whereas adjusted binomial logistic analysis showed a significant association between sarcopenia and Internet use. In summary, among LS, frailty, and sarcopenia, sarcopenia showed the highest association with Internet use. Older adults without sarcopenia having good physical functions, such as grip strength, walking speed, and skeletal muscle index, more likely used the Internet; while older adults with sarcopenia were less likely to use the Internet. This implied that Internet use may be associated with physical function.

Abstract Background The onset of locomotive syndrome (LS) precedes that of frailty. Therefore, the first step in extending healthy life expectancy is to implement measures against LS in young adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of LS and its associated factors in young adults for early detection and prevention of LS. Methods The participants of this study comprised 413 university students specializing in health sciences (192 males and 221 females) with an average age of 19.1 ± 1.2 years. All participants voluntarily participated in the study and reported no serious health problems. The presence or absence of LS was evaluated using the stand-up test, two-step test, and the 25-question Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale. Additionally, musculoskeletal assessment (one-leg standing, squatting, shoulder elevation, and standing forward bend), body composition analysis (weight, body mass index, body fat mass, body fat percentage, skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), and phase angle), handgrip strength test, physical activity assessment, and nutritional assessment were conducted. Sex-stratified analyses were performed, comparing groups with and without LS. Factors associated with LS were explored using binomial logistic regression. Results Of the 413 young adults studied, 86 individuals (20.8%) were found to have LS. When stratified by sex, LS was observed to have a considerably higher prevalence in females (55, 24.9%) than in males (31, 16.1%). In males, the notable differences between the groups with and without LS were observed in one-leg standing and phase angle, whereas in females, differences were identified in body fat mass, body fat percentage, SMI, musculoskeletal pain, and handgrip strength. Two types of binomial logistic regression analysis revealed that the inability to perform one-leg standing was associated with LS in males, while the presence of musculoskeletal pain and a high body fat percentage were identified as factors associated with LS in females. Conclusions One in five young adults were found to have LS in this study, underscoring the necessity for early intervention and LS health education. Furthermore, effective management of musculoskeletal pain is also crucial.

Cosmic-ray muons produce various radioisotopes when passing through material. These spallation products can be backgrounds for rare event searches such as in solar neutrino, double-β decay, and dark matter search experiments. The KamLAND-Zen experiment searches for neutrinoless double-β decay in 745 kg of xenon dissolved in liquid scintillator. The experiment includes dead-time-free electronics with a high efficiency for detecting muon-induced neutrons. The production yields of different radioisotopes are measured with a combination of delayed coincidence techniques, newly developed muon reconstruction, and xenon spallation identification methods. The observed xenon spallation products are consistent with results from the fluka and geant4 simulation codes.

We report a measurement of the strange axial coupling constant gAs using atmospheric neutrino data at KamLAND. This constant is a component of the axial form factor of the neutral-current quasielastic (NCQE) interaction. The value of gAs significantly changes the ratio of proton and neutron NCQE cross sections. KamLAND is suitable for measuring NCQE interactions as it can detect nucleon recoils with low-energy thresholds and measure neutron multiplicity with high efficiency. KamLAND data, including the information on neutron multiplicity associated with the NCQE interactions, makes it possible to measure gAs with a suppressed dependence on the axial mass MA, which has not yet been determined. For a comprehensive prediction of the neutron emission associated with neutrino interactions, we establish a simulation of particle emission via nuclear deexcitation of C12, a process not considered in existing neutrino Monte Carlo event generators. Energy spectrum fitting for each neutron multiplicity gives gAs=-0.14-0.26+0.25, which is the most stringent limit obtained using NCQE interactions without MA constraints. The two-body current contribution considered in this analysis relies on a theoretically effective model and electron scattering experiments and requires future verification by direct measurements and future model improvement.

Introduction To date, there is limited evidence on the effects of bronchodilators on respiratory dynamics in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Dynamic chest radiography (DCR) is a novel radiographic modality that provides real-time, objective and quantifiable kinetic data, including changes in the lung area (Rs), tracheal diameter, diaphragmatic kinetics and pulmonary ventilation during respiration, at a lower radiation dose than that used by fluoroscopic or CT imaging. However, the therapeutic effect of dual bronchodilators on respiratory kinetics, such as chest wall dynamics and respiratory muscle function, has not yet been prospectively evaluated using DCR.Aim This study aims to evaluate the effects of bronchodilator therapy on respiratory kinetics in patients with COPD using DCR.Methods and analysis This is an open-label, prospective, single-centre, non-controlled, comparative study. A total of 35 patients with COPD, aged 40–85 years, with a forced expiratory volume in the first second of 30–80%, will be enrolled. After a 2–4 weeks washout period, patients will receive tiotropium/olodaterol therapy for 6 weeks. Treatment effects will be evaluated based on DCR findings, pulmonary function test results and patient-related outcomes obtained before and after treatment. The primary endpoint is the change in Rs after therapy. The secondary endpoints include differences in other DCR parameters (diaphragmatic kinetics, tracheal diameter change and maximum pixel value change rate), pulmonary function test results and patient-related outcomes between pre-therapy and post-therapy values. All adverse events will be reported.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval for this study was obtained from the Ethics Committee of Chiba University Hospital. The results of this trial will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.Trial registration number jRCTs032210543.

Summary: Foliar pigmentation patterns vary among plant species and growth conditions. In this study, we utilize hyperspectral imaging to assess foliar pigmentation in the bryophyte Marchantia polymorpha under nutrient stress and identify associated genetic factors. Using singular value decomposition (SVD) for feature selection, we quantitate color variations induced by deficiencies in phosphate, nitrate, magnesium, calcium, and iron. Pseudo-colored thallus images show that disrupting MpWRKY10 causes irregular pigmentation with auronidin accumulation. Transcriptomic profiling shows that MpWRKY10 regulates phenylpropanoid pathway enzymes and R2R3-MYB transcription factors during phosphate deficiency, with MpMYB14 upregulation preceding pigment accumulation. MpWRKY10 is downregulated in older, pigmented thalli under phosphate deficiency but maintained in young thalli, where it suppresses pigmentation genes. This downregulation is absent in pigmented thalli due to aging. Comparative transcriptome analysis suggests similar WRKY and MYB roles in nutrient response and pigmentation in red-leaf lettuce, alluding to conserved genetic factors controlling foliar pigmentation patterns under nutrient deficiency.

The KamLAND-Zen experiment has provided stringent constraints on the neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay half-life in ^{136}Xe using a xenon-loaded liquid scintillator. We report an improved search using an upgraded detector with almost double the amount of xenon and an ultralow radioactivity container, corresponding to an exposure of 970 kg yr of ^{136}Xe. These new data provide valuable insight into backgrounds, especially from cosmic muon spallation of xenon, and have required the use of novel background rejection techniques. We obtain a lower limit for the 0νββ decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}>2.3×10^{26}  yr at 90% C.L., corresponding to upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of 36-156 meV using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations.

Abstract Recent studies have revealed that despite high bone mineral density (BMD), osteoarthritis (OA) is a risk factor for osteoporotic fractures. However, the relationship between spinal OA and vertebral fractures has not yet been fully investigated. This longitudinal analysis used a subset of ongoing cohort study consist with Japanese postmenopausal women. The prevalence of spinal OA was determined using Kellgren–Lawrence grading method. The incidence of vertebral fractures were determined by semiquantitative analysis of spinal X-ray films. The relationship between the presence of spinal OA and incidence of vertebral fractures was evaluated using the Cox regression analysis. In total, 1480 women were followed up for 8.1 ± 6.4 years. Among them, 923 were diagnosed with spinal OA, and incident vertebral fractures were observed in 473 participants. After adjusting for confounding variables, the spinal OA (≥ grade 2) was a significant predictor of incident vertebral fractures (hazard ratio, 1.52; 95% confidence interval: 1.19–1.93, p = 0.001). Using ROC analysis, the thresholds of lumbar BMD for incident vertebral fractures were 0.952 g/cm2 for patients with spinal OA and 0.753 g/cm2 for patients without spinal OA. The presence of spinal OA is a risk factor for incident vertebral fractures despite high lumbar BMD.

Multinucleation occurs in various types of advanced cancers and contributes to their malignant characteristics, including anticancer drug resistance. Therefore, inhibiting multinucleation can improve cancer prognosis; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying multinucleation remain elusive. Here, we introduced a genetic mutation in cervical cancer cells to induce cell fusion-mediated multinucleation. The olfactory receptor OR1N2 was heterozygously mutated in these fused cells; the same OR1N2 mutation was detected in multinucleated cells from clinical cervical cancer specimens. The mutation-induced structural change in the OR1N2 protein activated protein kinase A (PKA), which, in turn, mediated the non-canonical olfactory pathway. PKA phosphorylated and activated furin protease, resulting in the cleavage of the fusogenic protein syncytin-1. Because this cleaved form of syncytin-1, processed by furin, participates in cell fusion, furin inhibitors could suppress multinucleation and reduce surviving cell numbers after anticancer drug treatment. The improved anticancer drug efficacy indicates a promising therapeutic approach for advanced cervical cancers.

We report the results of a search for MeV-scale astrophysical neutrinos in KamLAND presented as an excess in the number of coincident neutrino interactions associated with the publicly available high-energy neutrino datasets from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. We find no statistically significant excess in the number of observed low-energy electron antineutrinos in KamLAND, given a coincidence time window of ±500 s, ±1,000 s, ±3,600 s, and ±10,000 s around each of the IceCube neutrinos. We use this observation to present limits from 1.8 MeV to 100 MeV on the electron antineutrino fluence, assuming a mono-energetic flux. We then compare the results to several astrophysical measurements performed by IceCube and place a limit at the 90% confidence level on the electron antineutrino isotropic thermal luminosity from the TXS 0506+056 blazar.
