The advancement of nuclear energy technology necessitates the development of novel materials and synthesis methods to produce materials which enable new fuel cycles. Alongside the maturation of R&D scale technologies to produce these materials, there is an ongoing effort to develop in situ monitoring capabilities to reduce the time to the discovery and development of these fuels. Monitoring data can be leveraged in artificial intelligence platforms to detect phenomena which lead to varied macro- and microstructural features which impact the application and performance of samples synthesized. The present study presents early-stage findings of the implementation of high-temperature, high-frame-rate infrared thermal imaging to monitor the arc-melt synthesis of novel fuels and compounds relevant to advanced nuclear reactors. The study illustrates both the challenges and opportunities of this methodology, highlighting the importance of internal standards while determining emissivity and transmission values as well as visualizing volatilization during melt synthesis. Using a database on external exposures to environmental sources provided by the International Commission on Radiological Protection, monoenergetic and nuclide-specific dose-rate coefficients have been evaluated for volumetric sources with a uniform distribution to an effectively infinite depth in soil. Organ equivalent and effective dose rates for the public (newborns; 1-, 5-, 10-, and 15-year-old children; and adults), ambient dose equivalent rates, and air kerma free-in-air rates at 1 m above the ground were computed. This was performed using the weighted-integral method for monoenergetic photon and electron sources in an energy region of 10-2 to 8 MeV with 25 energy points to obtain the respective monoenergetic dose-rate coefficients. Then, based on these data, the dose-rate coefficients for 1252 radionuclides of 97 elements were evaluated. In those computations, the dose contribution from bremsstrahlung generated by electrons in the soil was also considered. In addition, dose-rate coefficients for the primordial radioactive decay chains of the thorium, uranium, and actinium series, as well as the decay of 137Cs with 137mBa in secular radioactive equilibrium, were obtained using the Bateman equation. For verification, the results of the effective dose rates for the 40K, 50V, thorium, and uranium series, as well as 137Cs/137mBa, were compared with those of previous studies and agreed within 10% for most cases. The combined chemotoxicity and radiotoxicity associated with uranium, utilized in nuclear industry and military applications, poses significant threats to human health. Among uranium pollutants, uranyl is particularly concerning due to its high absorptivity and potent nephrotoxicity in its + 6 valence state. Here, we have serendipitously found Na 2 SeO 3 facilitates the conversion of U(VI) to U(IV) precipitates. A novel approach involving nano-chitosan loaded internally with melatonin and externally modified with selenite (NPs Cs-Se/MEL) was introduced. This modification not only enhances the conversion of U(VI) to U(IV) but also preserves the spherical nanostructure and specific surface area, leading to increased adsorption of U(VI) compared to unmodified samples. Selenite modification improves lysosomal delivery in HEK-293 T cells and kidney distribution of the nanoparticles. Furthermore, NPs Cs-Se/MEL demonstrated a heightened uranium concentration in urine and exhibited remarkable efficiency in uranium removal, resulting in a reduction of uranium deposition in serum, kidneys, and femurs by up to 52.02 %, 46.79 %, and 71.04 %, respectively. Importantly, NPs Cs-Se/MEL can be excreted directly from the kidneys into urine when carrying uranium. Uranium (U) is a chemical and radioactive toxic contaminant affecting many groundwater systems. The focus of this study was to evaluate the suitability of forward osmosis (FO) for uranium rejection from contaminated groundwater under field-relevant conditions. Laboratory experiments with aqueous solution containing uranium were performed with FO membrane to understand the uranium rejection mechanism under varied pH, draw solution concentration, and presence of co-ions. Further, experiments were performed with U-contaminated field groundwater. Results of the hydrogeochemcial modelling using PHREEQC indicated that the rejection mechanism of uranium was highly dependent on aqueous speciation. Uranium rejection was maximum at alkaline pH with ca. 99% rejection due to charge-based interactions between membrane and dominant uranyl complexes. The results of the co-ion study indicated that nitrate and phosphate ions decrease uranium rejection. Whereas, bicarbonates, calcium, and magnesium ions concentrated uranium in feed solution. Further, the uranium adsorption onto the membrane surface primarily depended on pH of the aqueous solution with maximum adsorption at pH 5.5. In this paper, we report hydroxyapatite derived from egg-shell biowaste embedded on diglycolamic acid functionalized graphitic carbon nitride nanocomposite (abbreviated as HAp@D-gCN). The compositional and morphological characteristics of HAp@D-gCN were evaluated using scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, BET, FTIR techniques and surface charge using zeta potential measurement. The sorption of U(VI) species on HAp@D-gCN was investigated through batch studies as a function of pH, contact time, initial U(VI) concentration, adsorbent dosage and ionic strength. The adsorption of U(VI) onto HAp@D-gCN was confirmed by FTIR, XRD and EDS elemental mapping. Adsorption kinetics follow pseudo second order model and it attains equilibrium within 20 min. Adsorption isotherm data correlates well with Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum sorption capacity of 993.6 mg of U(VI) per gram of HAp@D-gCN at 298K. U(VI) can be leached from the loaded adsorbent using 0.01 M Na 2 CO 3 as desorbing agent and its sorption capacity remains unaffected even after 4 adsorption-desorption cycles. Based on the goal of "carbon neutralization and carbon peaking", it is still challenging to develop a high adsorption performance and environmentally friendly material for uranium extraction. We proposed a new idea of "Three-Dimensional Environmental-Friendly". A series of amino acid bis-substituted chitosan aerogels (C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4 and C-5) were prepared by ice template method and selective substitution reaction in water environment. Among them, C-3 adsorbent has the antibacterial properties of gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria and marine bacteria, which is more suitable for uranium adsorption in complex environments. Also, C-3 adsorbent solves the shortcomings of poor adsorption property and easy to cause secondary pollution during modification of traditional chitosan materials. The selectivity and adsorption capacity of uranium are further improved by the unique functional groups of serine residues. At pH = 7, the maximum adsorption capacity reaches 606.32 mg/g. In addition, C-3 adsorbent have excellent selectivity and stability. The synergistic effect of coordination, electrostatic interaction and intraparticle diffusion between C-3 adsorbent and uranium may be the key to its high adsorption performance. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics find widespread use in various aspects of our daily lives but often end up in the environment as (micro)plastic waste. In this study, the adsorption efficiency of PET microplastics for U-232 has been investigated prior and after surface alteration (e.g. oxidation (PET-ox), MnO 2 -coating (PET/MnO 2 ) and biofilm-formation (PET/Biofilm)) in the laboratory (at pH 4, 7 and 9) and seawater samples under ambient conditions and as a function of temperature. The results revealed a significant increase in the adsorption efficiency upon surface alteration, particularly after biofilm development on the MP's surface. Specifically, the K d values evaluated for the adsorption of U-232 by PET, PET-ox, PET/MnO 2 and PET/Biofilm are 12, 27, 73 and 363, respectively, at pH 7 and under ambient conditions. The significantly higher adsorption efficiency of the altered and particularly biofilm-coated PET, emphasizes the significance of surface alteration, which may occur under environmental conditions. In addition, according to the thermodynamic investigations the adsorption of U-232 by PET-MPs (both non-treated and modified), the adsorption is an endothermic and entropy-driven reaction. The presence of carbonates or humic substances (HS) will significantly affect the species and chemical behavior of U(VI) in solution, but lacking systematic exploration of the coupling effect of carbonates and HS under near real environmental conditions at present. Herein, the sorption behavior of U(VI) on illite was systematically studied in the co-existence of carbonates and HS including both humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) by batch technique. The distribution coefficients (K d ) increased as function of time and temperature but decreased with increasing concentrations of initial U(VI), Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ , as well as ion strength. At pH 2.0-10.5, the K d values first increased rapidly and then decreased visibly, with its maximum value appearing at pH 5.0, owning to the changes in the interaction between illite and the dominant species of U(VI) from electrostatic attraction to electrostatic repulsion. The sorption was a heterogeneous, spontaneous, and endothermic chemical process, which could be well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic and Flory-Huggins isotherm models. When carbonates and HA/FA coexisted, the K d values always increased first and then decreased as a function of pH, with the only difference for HA and FA being the key pH (pH key ) at which the promoting and inhibiting effects on the sorption of U(VI) onto illite undergo a transition. The carbonates and HS have a synergistic inhibitory effect on the U(VI) sorption onto illite at pH 7.8. FTIR and XPS spectra demonstrated that the hydroxyl groups on the illite surface and in the HS were involved in U(VI) sorption on illite in the presence of carbonates. The sandstone uranium deposits in the Kelulun Depression are the first commercially viable uranium deposits discovered in the Hailar Basin and the ore-bearing strata corresponding to the Lower Cretaceous Yimin Formation. However, the source of sedimentary matter, uranium source conditions, and uranium mineralization processes in the region have not been characterized. Accordingly, we analyzed the lithology, whole-rock geochemistry, zircon U-Pb ages, and trace elements of the Yimin Formation sandstones. The Yimin Formation sandstones were primarily composed of detrital grains with low compositional maturity. A geochemical analysis indicated that the parent rocks are felsic igneous rocks formed at an active continental margin with a moderately high degree of weathering. The detrital zircon U-Pb ages of the Yimin Formation 215-287 Ma with a peak at 230-260 Ma. Based on chronological, geochemical, and lithological data, we conclude that the Yimin Formation matter is derived from the Adunchulu Uplift on the western side of the Kelulun Depression and its parent rocks are Triassic granites. The Adunchulu uplift since the late Early Cretaceous and weathering and denudation of its uranium-rich granites provided ample matter and uranium. Marine biofouling directly affects the performance and efficiency of uranium (U(VI)) extraction from seawater. Compared to traditional chemical methods, natural plant extracts are generally biodegradable and nontoxic, making them an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic chemicals in solving the marine biofouling problem. The effectiveness of natural antibacterial plants (i.e., pine needle, peppermint, Acorus gramineus Soland, Cacumen platycladi, and wormwood) in solving the marine biofouling problem was evaluated in this work. Experimental results showed that natural antibacterial plants could kill Vibrio alginolyticus in solution and effectively solve the marine biofouling problem of U(VI) extraction. To improve the adsorption capacity of natural plants for U(VI) in seawater, poly(vinylphosphonic acid) (PVPA) was modified on natural antibacterial plant surfaces by irradiation grafting technology. PVPA and natural antibacterial plants work as active sites and base materials for the U(VI) extraction material, respectively. The recovery performance of PVPA/pine needle for U(VI) was preliminarily studied. Results show that the adsorption of U(VI) on PVPA/pine needle follows pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, and the maximum adsorption capacity is 111 mg/g at 298 K and pH 8.2.

Numerous investigations have illuminated the profound impact of phosphate on the adsorption of uranium, however, the effect of phosphate-mediated surface modification on the reactivity of zero-valent iron (ZVI) remained enigmatic. In this study, a phosphate-modified ZVI (P-ZVI bm ) was prepared with a facile ball milling strategy, and compared with ZVI bm , the U(VI) removal amount (435.2 mg/g) and efficiency (3.52×10 -3 g·mg -1 ·min -1 ) of P-ZVI bm were disclosed nearly 2.0 and 54 times larger than those of ZVI bm respectively. The identification of products revealed that the adsorption mechanism dominated the removal process for ZVI bm , while the reactive modified layer strengthened both the adsorption pattern and reduction performance on P-ZVI bm . DFT calculation result demonstrated that the binding configuration shifted from bidentate binuclear to multidentate configuration, further shortening the Fe-U atomic distance. More importantly, the electron transferred is more accessible through the surface phosphate layer, and selectively donated to U(VI), accounting for the elevated reduction performance of P-ZVI bm . Nuclear energy is playing an increasingly important role on the earth, but the nuclear plants leaves a legacy of radioactive waste pollution, especially uranium-containing pollution. Straw biochar with wide sources, large output, low cost, and easy availability, has emerged as a promising material for uranium extraction from radioactive wastewater, but the natural biomass with suboptimal structure and low content of functional groups limits the efficiency. In this work, microbial etch was first came up to regulate the biochar's structure and function. The surface of the biochar becomes rougher and more microporous, and the mineral contents (Ca, P) indirectly increased by microbial etch. The biochar was modified by calcium phosphate and exhibited a remarkable uranium extraction capacity of 590.8 mg g - 1 (fitted value). This study presents the successful synthesis of Magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxide composite phosphate-modified hydrothermal biochar for efficient removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. A novel synthesis approach involving phosphate thermal polymerization-hydrothermal method was employed, deviating from conventional pyrolysis methods, to produce hydrothermal biochar. The combination of solvent thermal polymerization technique with hydrothermal process facilitated efficient loading of layered double hydroxide (LDH) components onto the biochar surface, ensuring simplicity, low energy consumption and enhanced modifiability. Bamboo waste was utilized as the precursor for biochar, highlighting its superior green and sustainable characteristics. Additionally, this study elucidated the interactions between phosphate-modified hydrothermal biochar and LDH components with U(VI). Physicochemical analysis demonstrated that the composite biochar possessed a high surface area and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. XPS and FTIR analyses confirmed the efficient adsorption of U(VI), attributed to chelation interactions between phosphate groups, magnesium hydroxyl groups, hydroxyl groups and U(VI), as well as the co-precipitation of U(VI) with multi-hydroxyl aluminum cations captured by LDH. The composite biochar reached adsorption equilibrium with U(VI) within 80 min and exhibited excellent fitting to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. Under conditions of pH = 4 and 298 K, it displayed significantly high maximum adsorption capacity of approximately 388.81 mg g⁻ 1 , surpassing untreated biochar by 17-fold. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic and spontaneous and even after five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the removal efficiency of U(VI) remained stable at 75.46%. Uranium recovery from wastewater or seawater is important for both pollution control and uranium supply. Due to the complexity of the water body, it requires that the adsorbent should not only be highly efficient for selective adsorption but also have good antimicrobial properties. In this study, an antimicrobial thermosensitive hydrogel (UITAC) for uranium adsorption was prepared by one-step ion-imprinted polymerization using chitosan as a substrate and allyl trimethylammonium chloride as the antimicrobial modifier. UITAC showed excellent antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, being 98.8 % and 89.1 %, respectively. Endothermic and exothermic peaks respectively showed up at 36.3-38.5 °C and 30.5-34.1 °C in the DSC curves. UITAC quickly achieved its adsorption equilibrium in 30.0 min at 50 °C, pH 5.0 in the 0.8 mg/mL UO 2 2+ solution, with an adsorption capacity of 81.2 mg/g. The adsorption capacity could remain at 80 % after 5 cycles of repeated use. UITAC showed better adsorption selectivity to UO 2 2+ than vanadium and other metal ions, with selectivity coefficients α(UO 2 2+ /M n+ ) being 1.4-10.3. The pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir adsorption model had a better fit for UO 2 2+ adsorption by UITAC. The adsorption was a spontaneous process. The Gibbs Free Energy change, enthalpy change, and entropy change at 323.2 K were - 16.0 kJ/mol, 64.3 kJ/mol, and 248.4 J/mol·K, respectively. The development and exploration of uranium decorporation agents with straightforward synthesis, high removal ability, and low toxicity are crucial guarantees for the safety of workers in the nuclear industry and the public. Herein, we report the use of traditional Chinese medicine licorice for uranium decorporation. Licorice has good adsorption performance and excellent selectivity for uranium in the simulated human environment. Glycyrrhizic acid (GL) has a high affinity for uranium (p(UO 2 ) = 13.67) and will complex with uranium at the carbonyl site. Both licorice and GL exhibit lower cytotoxicity compared to the commercial clinical decorporation agent diethylenetriamine pentaacetate sodium salts (CaNa 3 -DTPA). Notably, at the cellular level, the uranium removal efficiency of GL is eight times higher than that of CaNa 3 -DTPA. Administration of GL by prophylactic intraperitoneal injection demonstrates that its uranium removal efficiency from kidneys and bones is 55.2 and 23.9%, while CaNa 3 -DTPA shows an insignificant effect. The density functional theory calculation of the bonding energy between GL and uranium demonstrates that GL exhibits a higher binding affinity (-2.01 vs -1.15 eV) to uranium compared to DTPA. These findings support the potential of licorice and its active ingredient, GL, as promising candidates for uranium decorporation agents.

The reaction between the lixiviant and the minerals in the aquifer of In-situ uranium leaching (ISL) will result mineral dissolution and precipitation. ISL will cause changes in the chemical composition of groundwater and the porosity and permeability of aquifer, as well as groundwater pollution. Previous studies lack three-dimension numerical simulation that includes a variety of minerals and considers changes in porosity and permeability properties simultaneously. To solve these problems, a three-dimensional reactive transport model (RTM) which considered minerals, main water components and changes in porosity and permeability properties in Bayanwula mine has been established. The results revealed that: (1) Uranium elements were mainly distributed inside the mining area and had a weak trend of migration to the outside. The strong acidity liquid is mainly in the mining area, and the acidity liquid dissolved the minerals during migrating to the outside of the mining area. The concentration front of major metal cations such as K+, Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ is about 150m away from the boundary. (2) The main dissolved minerals include feldspar, pyrite, calcite, sodium montmorillonite and calcium montmorillonite. Calcite is the most soluble mineral and one of the sources of gypsum precipitation. Other minerals will dissolve significantly after calcite is dissolved. (3) ISL will cause changes in porosity and permeability of the mining area. Mineral dissolution raises porosity and permeability near the injection well. Electrochemical uranium extraction (EUE) from seawater is a very promising strategy, but its practical application is hindered by the high potential for electrochemical system, as well as the low selectivity, efficiency, and poor stability of electrode. Herein, we developed creatively a low potential strategy for persistent uranium recovery by electrochemistry-assisted in-situ regeneration of oxygen vacancies and Ti(III) active sites coupled with indirect reduction of uranium, finally achieving high selectivity, efficient and persistent uranium recovery. As-designed titanium dioxide rich in oxygen vacancies (TiO 2 -V O ) electrode displayed an EUE efficiency of ∼99.9 % within 180 min at a low potential of 0.09 V in simulated seawater with uranium of 5∼20 ppm. Moreover, the TiO 2 -V O electrode also showed high selectivity (89.9 %) to uranium, long-term cycling stability and antifouling activity in natural seawater. Uranium mainly comes from ISL of sandstone-type uranium deposits in China. The change of porosity and permeability caused by blockage of ore-bearing strata is one of the most serious problems in acid ISL of uranium. In this paper, the groundwater tracer test was carried out before and 1 year after ISL to explore the pore and permeability evolution characteristics of the ore-bearing layer during ISL. The test results showed that the leaching solution migrated along two seepage channels and the water-bearing medium was isotropic. After 1 year of ISL, the flow rate of the leaching solution decreased obviously. However, the flow rate of the leaching solution in slower channel decreased more than that in the faster channel in all directions, which was caused by the more adequate chemical reactions between the leaching solution and the minerals of the ore-bearing layer and the more corresponding precipitation in the slower channel. In addition, the flow rate along the direction of groundwater flow decreased less than that in the direction of vertical groundwater flow. This was closely related to the transformation of aquifer medium by hydrodynamic field. Manufacturing a highly effective sorbent for removing UO 2 2+ ions from aqueous effluents is vital for safeguarding the environment and recovering valuable resources. This research presents an innovative strategy employing adsorbents derived from pullulan, specifically tailored with furfuryl-amidoxime (FAO), to improve their affinity for UO 2 2+ ions. The formation of a UO 2 2+ ion-imprinted sorbent (U-II-P) was achieved by crosslinking the UO 2 2+ /FAO-modified pullulan (FAO-P) complex with bis(maleimido)ethane (BME) via click Diels-Alder (DA) cyclization, enhancing its attraction and specificity for UO 2 2+ ions. Detailed characterization of the synthesis was performed using NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, and the sorbent's external textures were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The U-II-P sorbent showcased outstanding preference for UO 2 2+ over other metallic ions, with the most efficient adsorption occurring at pH 5. It exhibited a significant adsorption capacity of 262 mg/g, closely aligning with the predictions of the Langmuir adsorption model and obeying pseudo-second-order kinetic behavior. The leaching process of uranium tailings is a typical water-rock interaction. The release of 226 Ra from uranium tailings depends on the nuclides outside the intrinsic properties of uranium tailings on the one hand, and is influenced by the water medium on the other. In this paper, a uranium tailings repository in southern China was used as a research object, and uranium tailings at different depths were collected by drilling samples and mixed to analyze the 226 Ra occurrence states. Static dissolution leaching experiments of 226 Ra under different pH conditions, solid-liquid ratio conditions, and ionic strength conditions were carried out, and the adsorption and desorption behaviours of 226 Ra in five representative stratigraphic media were investigated. The results show that 226 Ra has a strong adsorption capacity in representative strata, with adsorption distribution coefficient K d values ranging from 1.07E+02 to 1.29E+03 (mL/g) and desorption distribution coefficients ranging from 4.97E+02 to 2.71E+03 (mL/g), but the adsorption is reversible. The 226 Ra in uranium tailings exists mainly in the residual and water-soluble states, and the release of 226 Ra from uranium tailings under different conditions is mainly from the water-soluble and exchangeable state fractions. Low pH conditions, low solid-liquid ratio conditions and high ionic strength conditions are favourable to the release of 226 Ra from uranium tailings, so the release of 226 Ra from uranium tailings can be reduced by means of adjusting the pH in the tailings and setting up a water barrier. Depleted uranium (DU) from corroded armor penetrators can migrate through the soil vadose zone and cause environmental problems, yet studies on such migration at former theatres of war are scarce. Here, we investigated vertical DU migration in a soil profile due to a penetrator (3-8 cm beneath the soil surface) corroded over 7 years in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The highest concentration of DU was ∼45,300 mg/kg at 6-10 cm, with the concentration decreasing markedly with increasing depth. The majority of the DU accumulated within the top 20 cm and the DU front reached ∼42 cm beneath the penetrator. In addition, particles with varying U concentrations (3-65 wt%) were observed at 0-15 cm, with U primarily co-located with O, Si, Al, maghemite, and hematite. Particularly, metaschoepite was identified at 6-10 cm. Finally, X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis found U was hexavalent in the soil profile. These findings suggest that the downward migration of DU was likely present as a soluble form adsorbed on clay minerals and Fe oxides. Overall, we show that the rate of DU migration within the vadose zone is comparatively slow, although if the penetrator is left in the soil for decades, it could pose a serious long-term risk. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS: Over 90 % of the depleted uranium (DU) penetrators fired in previous conflicts missed their armored targets and were left in the soil to corrode. The efficient capture of uranium from wastewater is crucial for environmental remediation and the sustainable development of nuclear energy, yet it poses considerable challenges. In this study, amphiphilic ionic covalent organic framework intercalated into graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets functionalized with polyethyleneimine (PEI) were used to construct hybrid membranes with ultrafast uranium adsorption. These hybrid membranes achieved equilibrium in just 10 min and the adsorption capacity was as high as 358.8 mg g -1 at pH = 6. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) analyses revealed that the strong interaction between sulfonic acid groups and uranyl ions was the primary reason for the high adsorption capacity and selectivity. The extended transition state and natural orbitals for chemical valence (ETS-NOCV) analysis revealed that the interaction between the 7 s and 5f orbitals of uranyl and the 2p orbitals of S and O in the sulfonate was the primary reason for the strong interaction between the sulfonate and the uranyl ion. In this work, chemical modification of the chitosan with ethyl acetoacetate was performed through a base-catalyzed reaction in which epichlorohydrin facilitated the insertion as well as nucleophilic substitution reaction to graft the 1,3-dioxo moiety across the linear chains of the base biopolymer to establish specificity and selectivity for U(VI) removal. The modified chitosan (EAA-CS) was intercalated into phosphate rich alginate matrix (PASA). Later on, the WO 3 -doped composites with different WO 3 to PASA mass ratio were prepared and characterized using FTIR, XPS, SEM-EDS, XRD, and elemental mapping analysis. WO 3 significantly contributed to chemically stable inorganic-organic composites with improved porous texture. Among the prepared composites, MCPS-3 microspherical beads, having mass ratio of 30.0 % w/w, exhibited excellent sorption capacity for U(VI) at an optimal pH 4.5. The successful U(VI) sorption was validated by the existence of two U4f peaks at 392.25 and 381.36 eV due to U4f 5/2 and U4f 7/2 sub-peaks with an intensity ratio of 3:4, respectively. Batch mode sorption kinetics followed pseudo-second-order rate equation (R 2  ≈ 0.99, q e,th  ≈ 116.88 mg/g, k 2  = 0.86 × 10 -4  g/mg.min -1 ) and equilibrium sorption data aligns with Langmuir (R 2  = 0.99, q m  = 343.85 mg/g at 310 K and pH = 4.5, K L  = 2.00 × 10 -2  L/mg) and Temkin models (R 2  ≈ 0.99). Thermodynamic parameters ΔH o (30.51 kJ/mol), ΔS o (0.19 kJ/mol.K) and ΔG o (-25.64, -26.89, and - 27.91 kJ/mol) at 298, 305, and 310 K, respectively, suggested that the uptake process is feasible, endothermic and spontaneous. Efficient uranium capture from wastewater holds great importance for the environmental remediation and sustainable development of nuclear energy, but it is a tremendous challenge. Herein, a facile and scalable approach is reported to fabricate functionalized hierarchical porous polymers (PPN-3) decorated with high density of phosphate groups for uranium adsorption. The as-constructed hierarchical porous structure could allow rapid diffusion of uranyl ions, while abundant phosphate groups that serve as adsorption sites could provide the high affinity for uranyl. Consequently, PPN-3 shows a high uranium adsorption uptake of 923.06 mg g -1 and reaches adsorption equilibrium within simply 10 min in uranium-spiked aqueous solution. Moreover, PPN-3 affords selective adsorption of uranyl over multiple metal ions and possesses a rapid and high removal rate of U(VI) in real water systems. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) has been used to cure rare earth slags (RES) containing radionuclides (e.g. Th and U) and heavy metals with favorable results. However, the role of microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in MICP curing RES remains unclear. In this study, the EPS of Lysinibacillus sphaericus K-1 was extracted for the experiments of adsorption, inducing calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) precipitation and curing of RES. The role of EPS in in MICP curing RES and stabilizing radionuclides and heavy metals was analyzed by evaluating the concentration and morphological distribution of radionuclides and heavy metals, and the compressive strength of the cured body. The results indicate that the adsorption efficiencies of EPS for Th (IV), U (VI), Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Cd 2+ were 44.83%, 45.83%, 53.7%, 61.3%, 42.1%, and 77.85%, respectively. The addition of EPS solution resulted in the formation of nanoscale spherical particles on the microorganism surface, which could act as an accumulating skeleton to facilitate the formation of CaCO 3 . After adding 20 mL of EPS solution during the curing process (Treat group), the maximum unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the cured body reached 1.922 MPa, which was 12.13% higher than the CK group. The contents of exchangeable Th (IV) and U (VI) in the cured bodies of the Treat group decreased by 3.35% and 4.93%, respectively, compared with the CK group. Uranium as a nuclear fuel, its source and aftertreatment has been a hot topic of debate for developers. In this paper, amidoxime and guanidino-modified cotton fibers (DC-AO-PHMG) were synthesized by the two-step functionalization approach, which exhibited remarkable antimicrobial and high uranium recovery property. Adsorption tests revealed that DC-AO-PHMG had excellent selectivity and anti-interference properties, the maximum adsorption capacity of 609.75 mg/g. More than 85 % adsorption capacity could still be kept after 10 adsorption-desorption cycles, and it conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model as a spontaneous heat-absorbing chemical monolayer process. FT-IR, EDS and XPS analyses speculated that the amidoxime and amino synergistically increased the uranium uptake. The inhibitory activities of DC-AO-PHMG against three aquatic bacteria, BEY, BEL (from Yellow River water and lake bottom silt, respectively) and B. subtilis were significantly stronger, and the uranium adsorption was not impacted by the high bacteria content. Capacitive deionization (CDI) technology holds great potential for rapid and efficient uranyl ion removal from wastewater. However, the related electrode materials still have much room for research. Herein, chitosan/phytic acid complexes were anchored on polypyrrole nanotubes (CS/PA-PPy) to fabricate the electrode for the electrosorption of uranyl ions (UO 2 2+ ). In this system, polypyrrole nanotubes provided specific channels for ion and electron diffusion, and chitosan/phytic acid complexes offered selective sites for UO 2 2+ binding. The results demonstrated that CS/PA-PPy via electrosorption showed faster kinetics and higher uranium uptake than those via physicochemical adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity toward UO 2 2+ via electrosorption (1.2 V) could reach 799.3 mg g -1 , which was higher than most of the reported CDI electrodes. Electrochemical measurements and experimental characterizations showed that the electrosorption of UO 2 2+ by CS/PA-PPy was a synergistic effect of capacitive process and physicochemical adsorption, in which the capacitive mechanism involved the formation of an electric double layer from hollow polypyrrole nanotubes, whereas the coordination of phosphate, amino and hydroxyl groups with UO 2 2+ was attributed to physicochemical adsorption. Residues generated from the uranium purification process, characterized by a high uranium content, pose a significant challenge for recovery through leaching and present a considerable environmental threat. After using XRD and SEM-mapping characterization analysis combined with the BCR continuous graded extraction test to analyze the content of different states of uranium, it was found that the main reason why the uranium in the residue was difficult to leach because it was encapsulated by SiO 2 crystals. Using NH 4 HF 2 as a leaching agent, a leaching study of uranium in the residue was carried out, and the results showed that the H + and F - produced by NH 4 HF 2 could react with SiO 2 , destroying the crystal lattice of SiO 2 and causing the encapsulated uranium to come into contact with the leaching agent, facilitating the leaching of uranium in the residue. The optimum conditions for uranium leaching were 10% mass fraction of NH 4 HF 2 , a liquid-solid ratio of 30:1, a reaction temperature of 30 °C and a reaction time of 120 min, and the leaching efficiency of uranium from the residue was as high as 98.95%. The leaching kinetics of uranium by NH 4 HF 2 were consistent with the mixed controlled model in the shrinking core models, indicating that the surface chemical reaction and mass diffusion dominated both uranium leaching processes. The elimination of uranium from radioactive wastewater is crucial for the safe management and operation of environmental remediation. Here, we present a layered vanadate with high acid/base stability, [Me 2 NH 2 ]V 3 O 7 , as an excellent ion exchanger capturing uranyl from highly complex aqueous solutions. The material possesses an indirect band gap, ferromagnetic characteristic and a flower-like morphology comprising parallel nanosheets. The layered structure of [Me 2 NH 2 ]V 3 O 7 is predominantly upheld by the H-bond interaction between anionic framework [V 3 O 7 ] n n - and intercalated [Me 2 NH 2 ] + . The [Me 2 NH 2 ] + within [Me 2 NH 2 ]V 3 O 7 can be readily exchanged with UO 2 2+ . [Me 2 NH 2 ]V 3 O 7 exhibits high exchange capacity ( q m = 176.19 mg/g), fast kinetics (within 15 min), high removal efficiencies (>99%), and good selectivity against an excess of interfering ions. It also displays activity for UO 2 2+ ion exchange over a wide pH range (2.00-7.12). More importantly, [Me 2 NH 2 ]V 3 O 7 has the capability to effectively remove low-concentration uranium, yielding a residual U concentration of 13 ppb, which falls below the EPA-defined acceptable limit of 30 ppb in typical drinking water. [Me 2 NH 2 ]V 3 O 7 can also efficiently separate UO 2 2+ from Cs + or Sr 2+ achieving the highest separation factors (SF U/Cs of 589 and SF U/Sr of 227) to date. The BOMD and DFT calculations reveal that the driving force of ion exchange is dominated by the interaction between UO 2 2+ and [V 3 O 7 ] n n - , whereas the ion exchange rate is influenced by the mobility of UO 2 2+ and [Me 2 NH 2 ] + . Our experimental findings indicate that [Me 2 NH 2 ]V 3 O 7 can be considered as a promising uranium scavenger for environmental remediation. Additionally, the simulation results provide valuable mechanistic interpretations for ion exchange and serve as a reference for designing novel ion exchangers.

A sensitive and biocompatible N-rich probe for rapid visual uranium detection was constructed by grafting two trianiline groups to 2,6-bis(aminomethyl)pyridine. Possessing excellent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property and the advantages to form multidentate chelate with U selectively, the probe has been applied successfully to visualize uranium in complex environmental water samples and living cells, demonstrating outstanding anti-interference ability against large equivalent of different ions over a wide effective pH range. A large linear range (1.0 × 10 -7 -9.0 × 10 -7  mol/L) and low detection limit (72.6 nmol/L, 17.28 ppb) were achieved for the visual determination of uranium. In order to prevent uranium pollution and recovery uranium resources, it was necessary to find a highly efficient adsorbent for radioactive wastewater treatment. Herein, U(VI) imprinted polyethyleneimine (PEI) incorporated chitosan/layered hydrotalcite composite foam (IPCL) was synthesized by combining ion-imprinting and freeze-drying techniques. IPCL has a high amino/imino content and an ultralight macroporous structure, making it capable of efficiently adsorbing U(VI) and easy to separate; Especially after ion-imprinting, vacancies matching the size of uranyl ions were formed, significantly improving U(VI) selectivity. The adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics were in accordance with the Freundlich model and PSO model respectively, indicating that heterogeneous adsorption of U(VI) by the adsorbents. The adsorption capacity of IPCL-2 for U(VI) reached 278.8. mg/g (under the conditions of optimal pH 5.0, temperature of 298 K, contact time of 2 h, and adsorbent dosage of 0.2 g/L), which is almost double of that for the non-imprinted foam (PCL-2, 138.2 mg/g), indicating that IPCL-2 can intelligently recognize U(VI). The heterogeneous adsorption mechanism of U(VI) by IPCL-2 involves complexation, ion-exchange and isomorphic substitution. The adsorption of U(VI) by IPCL-2 is spontaneous and endothermic. The effects of Fe(II) and humic acid on U(VI) immobilization onto oxidized carbon nanofibers (Ox-CNFs, pyrolysis of bacterial cellulose) were investigated by batch, spectroscopic and modeling techniques, with results suggesting that, Ox-CNFs exhibited fast adsorption rate (adsorption equilibrium within 3 h), high adsorption performance (maximum adsorption capacity of 208.4 mg/g), good recyclability (no notable change after five regenerations) in the presence of Fe(II) towards U(VI) from aqueous solutions (e.g., 40 % reduction and 10 % adsorption at pH 8.0), which was attributed to the various oxygen-containing functional groups, excellent chemical stability, large specific surface area and high redox effect. U(VI) adsorption increased with increasing pH from 2.0 to 5.0, then high-level plateau and remarkable decrease were observed at 5.0-6.0 and at pH > 6.0, respectively. According to FT-IR and XPS analysis, a negative correlation between U(VI) reduction and organic in the presence of Fe(II) implied that U(VI) reduction was driven by Fe(II) while inhibited by humic acid. The interaction mechanism of U(VI) on Ox-CNFs was demonstrated to be adsorption and ion exchange at low pH and reduction at high pH according to XPS and surface complexation modeling. These findings filled the knowledge gaps pertaining to the effect of Fe(II) on the transformation and fate of U(VI) in the actual environment. Amidoxime-based fiber adsorbents hold significant promise for uranium extraction. However, a notable issue is that these adsorbents primarily originate from synthetic polymer materials, which, aside from providing good mechanical support, have no other functions. In recent study, we shifted our focus to silk fiber (SF), a natural protein fiber known for its unique core-shell structure and rich amino acids. The shell layer, due to its abundant functional groups, makes it easily modifiable, while the core layer provides excellent mechanical strength. Leveraging these inherent properties, an amidoxime-based fiber adsorbent was developed. This adsorbent utilizes amino and carboxyl groups for enhanced performance synergistically. This method involves establishing uranium affinity sites on the outer sericin layer of SF via chemical initiation of graft polymerization (CIGP) and amidoximation (SF-g-PAO). The water absorption ratio of SF-g-PAO is as high as 601.16 % (DG = 97.17 %). Besides, SF-g-PAO demonstrates an exceptional adsorption capacity of 15.69 mg/g in simulated seawater, achieving a remarkable removal rate of uranyl ions at 95.06 %. It can withstand a minimum of five adsorption-elution cycles. Over a 4-week period in natural seawater, SF-g-PAO displayed an adsorption capacity of 4.95 mg/g. Furthermore, SF-g-PAO also exhibits impressive uranium removal efficiency in real nuclear wastewater, with a removal rate of 63 % in just 15 min and a final removal rate of 90 %. In this work, the modified‑sodium alginate gel beads were prepared by sol-gel method. Due to the presence of water channels in the sodium alginate gel bead, amidoxime groups and PO 4 3- were exposed to the surface of the adsorbent to the maximum extent, resulting in the excellent adsorption capacity of modified‑sodium alginate gel beads. The introduction of amidoxime-modified hydroxyapatite significantly improved the adsorption capacity and the adsorption rate of the gel beads. The adsorption capacity increased from 308.7 to 466.0 mg/g and the adsorption equilibrium time was shortened from 300 min to 120 min. The modified‑sodium alginate gel bead possessed the advantages of short adsorption time, high adsorption efficiency and large adsorption capacity, which could be regarded as a potential adsorbent for uranium. Moreover, the uranium removal ability on the modified gel beads was mainly attributed to the Coulomb force between PO 4 3- and uranium and the complexation between uranium and amidoxime groups. The aim of the present research is to fabricate a biosorbent using agricultural waste for removal of uranium from contaminated water i.e. "waste to wealth" approach. Cellulose extracted from wheat straw was mercerized and a novel semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) was fabricated through graft copolymerization of polyvinyl alcohol onto hybrid mercerized cellulose + collagen backbone. Response surface methodology was used for optimization of different reaction parameters as a function of % grafting (195.1 %) was carried out. Semi-IPN was found to possess higher thermal stability. Adsorption results revealed that the optimum parameters for the elimination of uranium using semi-IPN were: adsorbent dose = 0.15 g, pH = 6.0, contact time = 120 min and initial U (VI) concentration = 100 μg/L. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model gave the best description of the adsorption equilibrium data as the calculated q e value is nearest to the experimental q e for the different initial U(VI) concentrations. Adsorption experiments followed Langmuir isotherm with R 2  = 0.999. Furthermore, recyclability and reusability studies showed that the adsorption efficiency of semi-IPN was 82 % after 5 cycles indicating the superior recycling execution of fabricated biosorbent. Metal-organic frameworks (MOF)-polymer hybrid hydrogel solves the processable forming of MOF powder and energy consumption of uranium extraction. However, the hybrid hydrogel by conventional synthesis methods inevitably lead to MOF agglomeration, poor filler-polymer interfacial compatibility and slowly adsorption. Herein, we designed that ZIF-67 was implanted into the carboxymethyl cellulose/polyacrylamide (CMC/PAM) by network-repairing strategy. The carboxyl and amino groups on the surface of CMC/PAM drive the uniform growth of ZIF-67 inside the CMC/PAM, which form an array of oriented and penetrating microchannels through coordination bonds. Our strategy eliminate the ZIF-67 agglomeration, increase the interfacial compatibility between MOF and polymer. The method also improve the free and fast diffusion of uranium in CMC/PAM/ZIF-67 hydrogel. According to the experimental, these enhancements synergistically enabled the CMC/PAM/ZIF-67 have a maximum adsorption capacity of 952 mg g -1 . The adsorption process of CMC/PAM/ZIF-67 fits well with pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm. Meanwhile, the CMC/PAM/ZIF-67 maintain a high removal rate (87.3 %) and chemical stability even during ten adsorption-desorption cycles. Uranium accumulation in the kidneys and bones following internal contamination results in severe damage, emphasizing the pressing need for the discovery of actinide decorporation agents with efficient removal of uranium and low toxicity. In this work, cinnamic acid (3-phenyl-2-propenoic acid, CD), a natural aromatic carboxylic acid, is investigated as a potential uranium decorporation ligand. CD demonstrates markedly lower cytotoxicity than that of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), an actinide decorporation agent approved by the FDA, and effectively removes approximately 44.5% of uranyl from NRK-52E cells. More importantly, the results of the prompt administration of the CD solution remove 48.2 and 27.3% of uranyl from the kidneys and femurs of mice, respectively. Assessments of serum renal function reveal the potential of CD to ameliorate uranyl-induced renal injury. Furthermore, the single crystal of CD and uranyl compound (C 9 H 7 O 2 ) 2 ·UO 2 (denoted as UO 2 -CD) reveals the formation of uranyl dimers as secondary building units. Thermodynamic analysis of the solution shows that CD coordinates with uranyl to form a 2:1 molar ratio complex at a physiological pH of 7.4. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further show that CD exhibits a significant 7-fold heightened affinity for uranyl binding in comparison to DTPA.

To mitigate the risk of radioactive isotope dissemination, the development of preventative and curative measures is of particular interest. For mass treatment, the developed solution must be easily administered, preferably orally, with effective, nontoxic decorporating properties against a wide range of radioactive isotopes. Currently, most orally administered chelation therapy products are quickly absorbed into the blood circulation, where chelation of the radioactive isotope is a race against time due to the short circulation half-life of the therapeutic. This report presents an alternative therapeutic approach by using a functionalized chitosan (chitosan@DOTAGA) with chelating properties that remains within the gastrointestinal tract and is eliminated in feces, that can protect against ingested radioactive isotopes. The polymer shows important in vitro chelation properties towards different metallic cations of importance, including (Cs(I), Ir(III), Th(IV), Tl(I), Sr(II), U(VI) and Co(II)), at different pH (from 1 to 7) representing the different environments in the gastrointestinal tract. An in vivo proof of concept is presented on a rodent model of uranium contamination following an oral administration of Chitosan@DOTAGA. The long-term management of tailings from former uranium (U) mines requires an in-depth understanding of the hydrogeological processes and water flow paths. In France, most of the legacy U mines are located in fractured crystalline (plutonic) rocks, where the intrinsic subsurface heterogeneity adds to the uncertainties about the former extraction and milling activities and the state of the mine when production was ceased. U ores were mainly processed by sulfuric acid leaching, leading to high-sulfate-content mill tailings now contained in several tailing storage facilities (TSFs). The La Ribière site, located in western central France, is a former open-pit and underground U mine, closed in 1992 and used to store mill tailings. This site is being used as a test case to establish a workflow in order to explain and predict water flow and subsurface contaminant transport. A conceptual model of water flow and sulfate transport, at the scale of the La Ribière watershed, is first developed based on available information and hydrogeochemical monitoring. Recent geophysical investigations allows refining this model. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) proves to be efficient at localizing the extent of the highly conductive sulfate plume inherited from the U-mill tailings, but also at imaging the weathering profile. Magnetic Resonance Sounding (MRS), despite the limited signal intensity due to the low porosity in crystalline rocks, gives some insight into the porosity values, the depth of the fractured layer and the location of the low-porosity ore-processing muds. Based on this conceptual model, a 3D flow and non-reactive transport model with the METIS code is developed and calibrated. In this work, novel monoclinic tungsten oxide (WO 3 )-encapsulated phosphate-rich porous sodium alginate (PASA) microspherical hydrogel beads were prepared for efficient U(VI) capture. These macroporous and hollow beads were systematically characterized through XRD, FTIR, EDX-mapping, and SEM-EDS techniques. The O and P atoms in the PO and monoclinic WO 3 offered inner-spherical complexation with U(VI). The in situ growth of WO 3 played a significant role inside the phosphate-rich biopolymeric network to improve its chemical stability, specific surface area, adsorption capacity, and sorption rate. The phytic acid (PA) served for heteroatom doping and crosslinking. The encapsulated WO 3 mass ratio was optimized in different composites, and WO 3 /PASA 3 (the microspherical beads with a mass ratio of 30.0 % w/w) exhibited remarkable maximum sorption capacity q m (336.42 mg/g) computed through the best-fit Langmuir model (R 2  ≈ 0.99) and rapid sorption equilibrium, t eq (150 min). The isothermal sorption studies were conducted at different temperatures (298, 303, and 308 K) and thermodynamic parameters concluded that the process of U(VI) sorption using WO 3 /PASA 3 is endothermic and feasible having ΔH o (8.19 kJ/mol), ΔG o (-20.75, -21.38, and - 21.86 kJ/mol) and proceeds with a minute increase in randomness ΔS o (0.09 kJ/mol.K). The reduction of soluble U(VI) to insoluble and less toxic U(IV) by photocatalysis is an effective method to control uranium contamination. The graphitic carbon nitride nanosheet (CNN)/UiO-66 composites (CNNU) were prepared by thermal polymerization and solvothermal methods for the removal of U(VI). The morphology, crystal structure and optical properties of composites were analyzed by SEM, XRD, BET, UV-DRS, PL and EIS. The results showed the introduction of UiO-66 increased the specific surface of CNN from 9.07 m 2 /g to 46.24 m 2 /g, and effectively suppressed the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes and improved the photocatalytic activity. The U(VI) removal capacity by adsorption and photocatalysis of CNNU was reached 779.47 mg/g, which significantly higher than that of adsorption (478.38 mg/g). The adsorption process was found to conform to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isothermal model. Meanwhile, U(VI) adsorbed on the CNNU was reduced to U(IV) via e - and ·O 2 - generated in the photocatalytic process. Seawater reserves about 4.5 billion tons of uranium, if properly extracted, could be a sustainable green energy resource for hundreds of years, alternating its limited terrestrial ore and reducing the CO 2 emitted from fossil fuels. The current seawater uranium adsorbents suffer neither economically viable nor adsorption efficiency, requiring more development to harvest satisfactorily uranium from seawater. Amidoxime-based fibrous adsorbents are the most promising adsorbents of seawater uranium due to abundant chelating sites. However, they suffer from severe shrinkage and stiffness once they dry, losing porous architecture and mechanical properties. Herein, an economical and scalable two-nozzle electrospinning technology was applied to produce poly amidoxime nanofibers (PAO NFs) supported by Poly acrylonitrile nanofibers (PAN NFs) as composite PAO/PAN nanofibrous mats with high structure stability. These PAO/PAN mats, with rapid wettability and excellent mechanical strength, show promising uranium adsorption capacities of 369.8 mg/g at seawater pH level, much higher than PAO and PAN NFs. The uranium adsorption capacity of the PAO/PAN mat reached 5.16 mg/g after 7 days of circulating (10 ppm uranium) spiked natural seawater. Importantly, the composite mat maintained its fibrous structure after five adsorption-desorption cycles with more than 80 % of its adsorption capacity, confirming its recyclability and stability. Uranium is one of the sensitive radionuclides in the wastewater of nuclear powers. Due to the fact that nuclear powers are mainly located in coastal areas, the elimination of uranium (U(VI)) pollution from coastal nuclear power is ultimately rely on marine microorganisms. The fixing of U(VI) on V. alginolyticus surface or converting it into sediments is an effective elimination strategy for U(VI) pollution. In this work, typical marine microorganism V. alginolyticus was used to evaluate the elimination of U(VI) pollution by marine microorganisms. Effects of solution conditions (such as pH, temperature, and bacterium concentrations) on the physicochemical properties and elimination capabilities of V. alginolyticus were studied in detail. FT-IR, XPS and XRD results reveal that COOH, NH 2 , OH and PO 4 on V. alginolyticus were main functional groups for U(VI) elimination and formed (UO 2 ) 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·H 2 O. The elimination of U(VI) by V. alginolyticus includes two stages of adsorption and biomineralization. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity (C s,max ) of V. alginolyticus for U(VI) can reach up to 133 mg/g at pH 5 and 298 K, and the process reached equilibrium in 3 h. In contaminated water and soil, little is known about the role and mechanism of the biometabolic molecule siderophore desferrioxamine-B (DFO) in the biogeochemical cycle of uranium due to complicated coordination and reaction networks. Here, a joint experimental and quantum chemical investigation is carried out to probe the biomineralization of uranyl (UO 2 2+ , referred to as U(VI) hereafter) induced by Shewanella putrefaciens (abbreviated as S. putrefaciens ) in the presence of DFO and Fe 3+ ion. The results show that the production of mineralized solids {hydrogen-uranium mica [H 2 (UO 2 ) 2 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O]} via S. putrefaciens binding with UO 2 2+ is inhibited by DFO, which can both chelate preferentially UO 2 2+ to form a U(VI)-DFO complex in solution and seize it from U(VI)-biominerals upon solvation. However, with Fe 3+ ion introduced, the strong specificity of DFO binding with Fe 3+ causes re-emergence of biomineralization of UO 2 2+ {bassetite [Fe(UO 2 ) 2 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8(H 2 O)]} by S. putrefaciens , owing to competitive complexation between Fe 3+ and UO 2 2+ for DFO. As DFO possesses three hydroxamic functional groups, it forms hexadentate coordination with Fe 3+ and UO 2 2+ ions via these functional groups. The stability of the Fe 3+ -DFO complex is much higher than that of U(VI)-DFO, resulting in some DFO-released UO 2 2+ to be remobilized by S. putrefaciens . Our finding not only adds to the understanding of the fate of toxic U(VI)-containing substances in the environment and biogeochemical cycles in the future but also suggests the promising potential of utilizing functionalized DFO ligands for uranium processing.

Shewanella putrefaciens (S. putrefaciens) is one of the main microorganisms in soil bioreactors, which mainly immobilizes uranium through reduction and mineralization processes. However, the effects of elements such as phosphorus and ZVI, which may be present in the actual environment, on the mineralization and reduction processes are still not clearly understood and the environment is mostly in the absence of oxygen. In this study, we ensure that all experiments are performed in an anaerobic glove box, and we elucidate through a combination of macroscopic experimental findings and microscopic characterization that the presence of inorganic phosphates enhances the mineralization of uranyl ions on the surface of S. putrefaciens, while zero-valent iron (ZVI) facilitates the immobilization of uranium by promoting the reduction of uranium by S. putrefaciens. Interestingly, when inorganic phosphates and ZVI co-exist, both the mineralization and reduction of uranium on the bacterial surface are simultaneously enhanced. However, these two substances exhibit a certain degree of antagonism in terms of uranium immobilization by S. putrefaciens. Furthermore, it is found that the influence of pH on the mineralization and reduction of uranyl ions is far more significant than that of inorganic phosphates and ZVI. In this study, an amorphous silica reinforced, phosphoric-crosslinked chitosan foam (P-CTS@Si x O y ) was prepared. The introduction of amorphous silica not only increased the affinity of the adsorbent for uranium, but also improved the stability of the material. The number of active sites of P-CTS@Si x O y was increased by the introduction of phosphate groups. The material exhibited excellent uranium adsorption performance with the removal capacity and efficiency of 850.5 mg g -1 and 98.1 %, respectively. After regenerations, the morphology of P-CTS@Si x O y still maintained, and the uranium adsorption efficiency remained above 90 %, manifesting the excellent cycle performance of P-CTS@Si x O y . In the dynamic adsorption experiment, P-CTS@Si x O y successfully concentrated the volume of uranium-containing solution, and exhibited excellent uranium adsorption performance. The analysis of kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics manifested that the uranium adsorption behavior of P-CTS@Si x O y was a spontaneous, endothermic, monolayer chemical adsorption process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer were used to characterized the P-CTS@Si x O y before and after adsorption, which demonstrated that the main interaction mechanism between uranium and P-CTS@Si x O y was the complexation. A novel polyvinyl alcohol-carbon nanotube containing an imidazolyl ionic liquid/chitosan composite hydrogel (termed CBCS) was prepared for highly selective uranium adsorption from seawater. The results show that CBCS has good adsorption properties for uranium within the pH range of 5.0-8.0. Kinetics and thermodynamics experiments show that the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of CBCS to U(VI) is 496.049 mg/g (288 K, pH = 6.0), indicating a spontaneous exothermic reaction. Mechanism analysis shows that the hydroxyl group, amino group, and CN bond on the surface of CBCS directly participate in uranium adsorption and that the dense pores on the surface of CBCS play an important role in uranium adsorption. The competitive adsorption experiment shows that CBCS has excellent uranium adsorption selectivity. In addition, CBCS exhibits good reusability. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, the uranium adsorption rate of CBCS can still reach >98 %. The complexation of uranyl hydroxides with orthosilicic acid was investigated by experimental and theoretical methods. Spectroluminescence titration was performed in a glovebox under argon atmosphere at pH 9.2, 10.5 and 11.5, with [U(VI)] = 10 -6 and 5 × 10 -6  mol kg w -1 . The polymerization effects of silicic acid were minimized by ruling out samples with less than 90 % monomeric silicic acid present, identified via UV-Vis spectrometry using the molybdate blue method. Linear regression analysis based on time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) results yielded the conditional stepwise formation constants of U(VI)-OH-Si(OH) 4 complexes at 0.05 mol kg w -1 NaNO 3 . The main spectroscopic features - characteristic peak positions and decay-time - are reported for the first time for the UO 2 (OH) 2 SiO(OH) 3 - species observed at pH 9.2 and 10.5 and UO 2 (OH) 2 SiO 2 (OH) 2 2- predominant at pH 11.5. Quantum chemical calculations successfully computed the theoretical luminescence spectrum of the complex UO 2 (OH) 2 SiO(OH) 3 - species, thus underpinning the proposed chemical model for weakly alkaline systems. The conditional stability constants were extrapolated to infinite dilution using the Davies equation, resulting in log 10 β°(UO 2 (OH) 2 SiO(OH) 3 - ) and log 10 β°(UO 2 (OH) 2 SiO 2 (OH) 2 2- ).
