- Abstract
In the paper, two questions are raised: concerning the scope of immunity of the estates of the Bishopric of Meissen in eastern Upper Lusatia (so-called Zagozd), and how and when the former estates of the bishopric were absorbed by the judicial district (weichbild) of the town of Görlitz. The status of the bishopric's estates has been reconstructed as immune from the jurisdiction of worldly powers, also in the field of high (criminal) justice, from at least the mid- or late twelfth century. This status was probably kept by those estates also when they were transferred to the hands of the knights after the decomposition of the domain of the bishopric. The end of the immunity of the former episcopal estates was brought about only by the active enforcement of their own jurisdiction by the townsmen of Görlitz in the 1370s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The issue of the ecclesiastical history of the secondary lands of the Bohemian Crown continues to offer a number of topics for possible research. One of them is the relationship of King John of Luxembourg to the ecclesiastical institutions in Upper Lusatia, which he gradually brought into his immediate possession. He was thus able to fully develop his donating activities there. The aim of this paper is, based on sources of a diplomatic nature, to analyse and interpret the monarch’s policy towards the various ecclesiastical institutions in the region.

Upper Lusatia, a region consisting of the Bautzen and Görlitz districts, was for many years part of the power structure of the Bohemian rulers. From the end of the 11th century until the year 1253 it was ruled by the Premyslides, and in the 14th century the Luxembourgs incorporated Upper Lusatia into the Lands of the Bohemian Crown and it remained their part until 1635. The main forms of presentation of the king’s power in the Crown Lands in the Middle Ages and early modern era were oath-taking journeys, which involved an oath of allegiance sworn by a country to a ruler and his ceremonial arrival and reception in a selected town. The form of this ceremony known as adventus regis evidently became fixed in Upper Lusatia in the reign of the Luxembourgs though we find scant mentions of them in contemporary sources. The study endeavours to re-enact the royal arrivals and presents an overview of the journeys of Bohemian kings to Upper Lusatia in the 14th and 15th century.

The author focuses on the creation of the monarchical administration in Upper Lusatia as one of the Lands of the Bohemian Crown, after the mid-16th century, when significant changes in this area were made. The supreme powers were essentially divided between two officials who were also the sovereign’s representatives in the land: the traditional reeve and the newly established governor.

This paper, based on an analysis of a wide spectrum of extant sources, analyses the preparations for and the course of the Upper Lusatian stage of the oath-taking journey of Matthias of Austria in 1611. It follows the preparations on the part of the monarch’s court and analyses information about the steps taken before the ruler’s arrival by the Upper Lusatian Estates. It follows closely the stages of the welcoming ceremony and describes the course of the oaths sworn to the Czech king.

In the context of the Lands of the Bohemian Crown it was only in Upper Lusatia, and specifically in Bautzen, that medieval figural portraits of medieval and early Modern Age rulers survived, namely Matthias Corvinus and Rudolf II. Likewise, in different towns of the Lusatian League Bohemian kings’ coats of arms also survived to this day in diverse forms. The rulers left their marks on sacral architecture, too, which we can document with busts in Saint Nicolas Church in the Lower Lusatian town of Luckau or with keystones of Görlitz churches, as well as the overall building conception and the individual architectural details of the buildings (portals, vaults, cantilevers, ornamental decorations). The visual heritage of the Bohemian ruling power is in both Lusatias, and more particularly in Upper Lusatia, often surprisingly rich.

EMIGRATION & immigration ,SOCIAL mobility ,COUNTRY life ,BORDER security - Abstract
Contemporary Saxon immigration statistics noted a vast "floating population" in the multilocal and transregional border society of Upper Lusatia but did not consider them immigrants. Indeed, agricultural and factory workers - the majority of them women - showed a high level of mobility, some of them even on a daily basis. On the one hand, national authorities on both sides of the border struggled to categorize and control these short-distance and temporary, but widespread mobilities. Customs checks, on the other hand, gave rise to a personalised border control. These checks not only targeted the small-scale mobility that was highly common in the border region, but also promoted the establishment of sedentariness and border regulations as the normal scenario in local society. But it was not until the late 19th century that there was migration control with cultural and racist undertones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ACCOUNT books ,PAYMENT systems ,PURCHASING power ,HARD currencies ,MONETARY systems ,MEDALS - Abstract
The article deals with the issue of a real circulating coins and accounting units used at the beginning of the 1540s in the Upper Lusatia. As a main source served the account books of the Vienna Court Chamber from 1543-1544. They preserve both the conversion of the purchasing power of the coins used by the Upper Lusatian estates and towns to pay the tax obligation for the military campaign against the Turks, as well as the conversion of the monetary units used in the payment system of Upper Lusatia at that time. This documentation shows that the Upper Lusatian Mark, which was divided into 48 small groats, was the equivalent to 56 kreuzers in the Austrian currency. The second main unit of currency was the Upper Lusatian Gulden, which was converted into the main Austrian unit of currency, the "Rhenish guldens", at the rate of 14 Rhenish guldens = 15 Upper Lusatian Guldens. At Upper Lusatia of that time, the silver thaler was worth 63 Upper Lusatian small groats (70 kreuzers) and the Hungarian gold ducat valued 93 Upper Lusatian small groats (105 kreuzers). The gradual unification of monetary units in all the Lands of the Bohemian Crown and in the Habsburg Hereditary Lands cannot be traced earlier than after 1547. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
V nich se dochoval jednak přepočet platební síly konkrétních mincí, kterými hornolužičtí stavové a města uhradili daňovou povinnost, jednak přepočet peněžních početních jednotek, užívaných tehdy v platebním, systému Horní Lužice. Stříbrný tolar tehdy platil v Horní Lužici 63 hornolužických malých grošů (70 krejcarů) a zlatý uherský dukát byl přijímán v hodnotě 93 hornolužických malých grošů (105 krejcarů)., The article deals with the issue of a real circulating coins and monetary measurement units used at the beginning of the 1640s in the Upper Lusatia. As a main source served the account books of the Vienna Court Chamber from 1543–1544. The aim of the study is to examine a series of coats of arms of the Hungarian and Bohemian Lands on the late Gothic Royal Oratory of Saint Vitus Cathedral in Prague in the Central European context. An analysis of coats of arms from the Lands of the Hungarian Crown has resulted in three new findings. On the one hand, contrary to previous concepts, the creation of the coats of arms did not took place in the first half of the 1490s, but probably in the 1510s–1520s, perhaps resulting from the Bohemian coronation of Mary of Hungary on 6 June 1522. On the other hand, the coat of arms of Upper Lusatia, placed on the balustrade, could have replaced the similar coat of arms of the Kingdom of Croatia only during an erroneous restoration attempt at the end of the 19th century. Finally, the coats of arms of the Lands of the Hungarian Crown on the Royal Oratory were taken over from the heraldic representation of Emperor Maximilian I in Innsbruck instead of those of the Jagiellonian dynasty in Prague or Buda.

The article deals with the dynastic policies of Charles IV. and his ideas about the arrangement of government in the Crown of Bohemia. It refers to so-called emperor’s testaments where the emperor describes in detail the succesion of the male members of the Luxembourg line and denotes their rank in rule. The pillar of the whole structure was the King of Bohemia, the absolute sovereign over all of the lands of the Crown of Bohemia. The remaining Luxembourgs were to hold their lands as a royal tenure. In this spirit, Charles IV. created a whole new duchy of Görlitz for his son John.

The management of natural resources has to follow the principles of sustainable development. Therefore, before starting new mining activities, it should be checked, whether existing deposits have been completely exploited. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) cross-border geologic model was created to generalize the existing data of the Neogene Berzdorf-Radomierzyce basin, located in Upper Lusatia on the Polish-German border south of the city of Görlitz-Zgorzelec. The model based on boreholes and cross sections of abandoned and planned lignite fields was extended to the Bernstadt and Neisse-Ręczyn Graben, an important tectonic structure at the southern rim of the basin. The partly detailed stratigraphy of Neogene sequences was combined to five stratigraphic units, considering the lithological variations and the main tectonic structures. The model was used to check the ability of a further utilization of the Bernstadt and Neisse-Ręczyn Graben, containing lignite deposits. Moreover, it will serve as a basis for the construction of a 3D cross-border groundwater model, to investigate the groundwater flow and transport in the Miocene and Quaternary aquifer systems. The large amount of data and compatibility with other software favored the application of the 3D geo-modeling software Paradigm GOCAD. The results demonstrate a very good fit between model and real geological boundaries. This is particularly evident by matching the modeled surfaces to the implemented geological cross sections. The created model can be used for planning of full-scale mining operations in the eastern part of the basin (Radomierzyce). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper deals with historical migration and integration processes on the basis of small-scale immigration into Saxon Upper Lusatia from 1815 to 1871. The focus of the analysis is on the permanent settlement of foreigners in Upper Lusatia and their acquisition of citizenship in the Kingdom of Saxony. This includes the development of immigration and citizenship policy in Saxony, with particular attention on the immigration practice of the responsible authorities. Also addressed are conflicts resulting from immigration which at the governmental level meant the rejection of poverty migrants, while at the level of the receiving communities the prevention of potential commercial competitors was paramount.

- Abstract
The aim of the study is to examine a series of coats of arms of the Hungarian and Bohemian Lands on the late Gothic Royal Oratory of Saint Vitus Cathedral in Prague in the Central European context. An analysis of coats of arms from the Lands of the Hungarian Crown has resulted in three new findings. On the one hand, contrary to previous concepts, the creation of the coats of arms did not took place in the first half of the 1490s, but probably in the 1510s-1520s, perhaps resulting from the Bohemian coronation of Mary of Hungary on 6 June 1522. - Abstract
The article deals with the dynastic policies of Charles IV. and his ideas about the arrangement of government in the Crown of Bohemia. It refers to so-called emperor's testaments where the emperor describes in detail the succesion of the male members of the Luxembourg line and denotes their rank in rule. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The text presents the contribution of several Kraków-based scholars – mainly Krystyna Pieradzka, Stanisław Nowogrodzki, and Józef Widajewicz – into the research of the medieval history of Upper Lusatia. Their works on Upper Lusatian issues, written and published in the 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s, are briefly commented and the contexts thereof are also presented. The author argues that the analyzed works must be seen not only – or even not primarily – as scholarly contributions, but also as a way in which the historians fulfilled their civic and professional duties by adopting and commenting the results of German research and presenting it to the Polish audience. It was especially important after 1945, when part of Upper Lusatia was incorporated into Poland and the new Polish inhabitants were to be taught the history of this region.

The book brings new results which are valuable as such and as analogies in the not much popular field of studying how the local government functioned away from rulers and bishops in the Middle Ages. Governance of outlying provinces of the early and high medieval polities was never a favorite topic for either medieval chronicles or modern medievalists. The book “Governance of a Distant Province in the Middle Ages: Case Study on Upper Lusatia” by Krzysztof Fokt aims at exploring this problem in a form of an “extreme case study”. The region chosen for closer analysis is Upper Lusatia, which in the tenth through twelfth century was the furthest pertinence of German kings in the Slavic world and for some time also a distant province of other polities: Poland and Bohemia. The study has been based upon both written and material (archeological and numismatic) evidence, and tries to write some passages of the history of the chosen region anew, without applying the stereotypes present in the three national historiographies engaged (the German, the Czech and the Polish). The main objectives of the book are to identify and comment on the means that were used to effectively govern a distant province and to recognize the factors which influenced the strategies applied by particular monarchs and territorial rulers. Substantial part of the work is also a detailed analysis of the infrastructure of governance, based upon written and material evidence from the eastern part Upper Lusatia (at present divided between Poland and Germany).

Upper Lusatian villici: stewards, town iudices or territorial advocati? The text deals with the problem of the proper interpretation of the institution of villicus, mentioned in Upper Lusatia in the 1st half of the 13th century. The article discusses all the hitherto attempts to identify the actual nature of the Upper Lusatian villici and proposes some new interpretations. The close relations of those villici with chartered towns (namely: Zgorzelec/Görlitz and Ostritz) and the virtual lack of royal estates around them makes it possible to state that they were not, as most scholars have claimed, royal stewards taking care of estates administered directly by the Bohemian kings (in Upper Lusatia such goods probably barely existed at all). Therefore, the most probable interpretation of the villici seems to be the one presented in 1923 by J. Bauermann, who identifi ed them with the sculteti hereditarii of particular towns.

Drawing from examples in Silesia and Upper Lusatia, this paper examines what a process of reform implied in the relationship of the Friars Minor, just as much as in that of the urban governments, with the space of the city: an often saturated space, in the times where the conception of their role and the consciousness of the priorities, in the minds of the city town councillors, were not any more completely those of the 12th and 13th centuries. Having underlined the clear reluctance which the Observance seems to have shown towards the term conventus for the benefit of the locus, we try to define how the franciscan reforming projects were able to fit into cities in which the ideological project of elites was increasingly based on the notion of Common Good (Bonum commune / Gemeinwohl). In a sociocultural approach of the space, we focus on some of the « anchor points » of the reform, participating in the stowage process of convents to the urban project: the question of the defense of the city, a function of assistance or, more doubtless, problems entering the field of the social (role of the communities of the Third Order) or that of the sacralization of the space. This last aspect, embodied by architectures of devotion and by the creation of the first Calvaries (Kalvarienberge) – often connected to the action of the franciscan Order –, allows to sketch a reflection on the transformations in the conception of the space and its layout at the dawn of early modern times: then the construction of a social space took shape, which was also a normalized public place, with its strengths of constraints and authority.

Study of natural factors that influenced abandonment of mediaeval rural settlements of eastern Upper Lusatia reflects three processes. The first one, most clearly visible through historical and archaeological evidence, is the adjustment of settlement to new models of rural economy prevailing in the 12th–14th centuries. In that case, natural factors used to constitute a framework for villages being grounded or rearranged either on the same or on new places in the time of the great colonization. The same applies to the second process, discernible already in the 15th cent.: abandonement of places especially disadventageous for agriculture. In that case, natural factors constituted limits of economic effectiveness of agricultural production in particular settlement locations. In one case, the influence of natural factors on abandonement of a village was direct, namely in the case of the site Jędrzychowice 9–10, which was covered with alluvial sediments of Nysa river. Detailed study upon the topic of natural factors shaping the form of rural settlement in eastern Upper Lusatia ought to be carried forward in a multi-disciplinary manner.
