Abstract Background Chickpea is prone to many abiotic stresses such as heat, drought, salinity, etc. which cause severe loss in yield. Tolerance towards these stresses is quantitative in nature and many studies have been done to map the loci influencing these traits in different populations using different markers. This study is an attempt to meta-analyse those reported loci projected over a high-density consensus map to provide a more accurate information on the regions influencing heat, drought, cold and salinity tolerance in chickpea. Results A meta-analysis of QTL reported to be responsible for tolerance to drought, heat, cold and salinity stress tolerance in chickpeas was done. A total of 1512 QTL responsible for the concerned abiotic stress tolerance were collected from literature, of which 1189 were projected on a chickpea consensus genetic map. The QTL meta-analysis predicted 59 MQTL spread over all 8 chromosomes, responsible for these 4 kinds of abiotic stress tolerance in chickpea. The physical locations of 23 MQTL were validated by various marker-trait associations and genome-wide association studies. Out of these reported MQTL, CaMQAST1.1, CaMQAST4.1, CaMQAST4.4, CaMQAST7.8, and CaMQAST8.2 were suggested to be useful for different breeding approaches as they were responsible for high per cent variance explained (PVE), had small intervals and encompassed a large number of originally reported QTL. Many putative candidate genes that might be responsible for directly or indirectly conferring abiotic stress tolerance were identified in the region covered by 4 major MQTL- CaMQAST1.1, CaMQAST4.4, CaMQAST7.7, and CaMQAST6.4, such as heat shock proteins, auxin and gibberellin response factors, etc. Conclusion The results of this study should be useful for the breeders and researchers to develop new chickpea varieties which are tolerant to drought, heat, cold, and salinity stresses.

Abstract Dynamic interactions within the tumor micro-environment drive patient response to immune checkpoint inhibitors. Existing preclinical models lack true representation of this complexity. Using a Head and Neck cancer patient derived TruTumor histoculture platform, the response spectrum of 70 patients to anti-PD1 treatment is investigated in this study. With a subset of 55 patient samples, multiple assays to characterize T-cell reinvigoration and tumor cytotoxicity are performed. Based on levels of these two response parameters, patients are stratified into five sub-cohorts, with the best responder and non-responder sub-cohorts falling at extreme ends of the spectrum. The responder sub-cohort exhibits high T-cell reinvigoration, high tumor cytotoxicity with T-cells homing into the tumor upon treatment whereas immune suppression and tumor progression pathways are pre-dominant in the non-responders. Some moderate responders benefit from combination of anti-CTLA4 with anti-PD1, which is evident from better cytotoxic T-cell: T-regulatory cell ratio and enhancement of tumor cytotoxicity. Baseline and on-treatment gene expression signatures from this study stratify responders and non-responders in unrelated clinical datasets.

Wastewater containing a mixture of heavy metals, a byproduct of chemical, petrochemical, and refinery activities driven by urbanization and industrial expansion, poses significant environmental threats. Analyzing such wastewater through adsorbate-adsorbent experiments yields extensive datasets. However, traditional methodologies like the Box–Behnken design (BBD) within the response surface methodology (RSM) struggle with managing large datasets and capturing the complex, nonlinear relationships inherent in such experimental data. To address these challenges, ML techniques have emerged as promising tools for accurately predicting the removal percentage of heavy metals from wastewater. In this study, we utilized tree-based regression models—specifically decision tree regression (DTR), random forest regression (RFR), and extra tree regression (ETR)—to forecast the efficiency of gooseberry seed powder in removing chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Additionally, we employed an ML-based Nelder–Mead optimization approach to identify the optimal values for key features (initial Cr(VI) concentration, pH, and Indian gooseberry powder dosage) which maximized the Cr(VI) removal percentage. Our experimental results reveal that the ETR model achieved an impressive R2 score of 0.99, demonstrating a low error rate in predicting the Cr(VI) removal percentage. Furthermore, we used DTR-Nelder–Mead, RFR-Nelder–Mead, and ETR-Nelder–Mead optimization approaches on a synthesized dataset of 2000 instances while varying the initial Cr(VI) concentration, pH, and Indian gooseberry powder dosage. The analysis determined that the DTR-Nelder–Mead and RFR-Nelder–Mead approaches yielded the highest Cr(VI) removal percentages of 78.21% and 78.107% at an initial concentration of 95.55 mg/L, respectively, a pH level of four, and an adsorbent dosage of 8 g/L of gooseberry seed powder. Furthermore, the ETR-Nelder–Mead approach obtained the maximum Cr(VI) removal percentage of 85.11% at an initial concentration of 99.25 mg/L, a pH level of 4.97, and an adsorbent dosage of 9.62 g/L of gooseberry seed powder. These results reported an increase in the Cr(VI) removal percentage ranging from 4.66% to 11.56% more than the Cr(VI) removal percentage obtained by experimentation. These findings underscore the efficacy of tree-based regression models and ML-based Nelder–Mead optimization in elucidating chromium removal processes from wastewater, offering valuable insights into effective treatment strategies.

Abstract Temperatures below or above optimal growth conditions are among the major stressors affecting productivity, end‐use quality, and distribution of key staple crops including rice (Oryza sativa), wheat (Triticum aestivum), and maize (Zea mays L.). Among temperature stresses, cold stress induces cellular changes that cause oxidative stress and slowdown metabolism, limit growth, and ultimately reduce crop productivity. Perception of cold stress by plant cells leads to the activation of cold‐responsive transcription factors and downstream genes, which ultimately impart cold tolerance. The response triggered in crops to cold stress includes gene expression/suppression, the accumulation of sugars upon chilling, and signaling molecules, among others. Much of the information on the effects of cold stress on perception, signal transduction, gene expression, and plant metabolism are available in the model plant Arabidopsis but somewhat lacking in major crops. Hence, a complete understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which staple crops respond to cold stress remain largely unknown. Here, we make an effort to elaborate on the molecular mechanisms employed in response to low‐temperature stress. We summarize the effects of cold stress on the growth and development of these crops, the mechanism of cold perception, and the role of various sensors and transducers in cold signaling. We discuss the progress in cold tolerance research at the genome, transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome levels and highlight how these findings provide opportunities for designing cold‐tolerant crops for the future.

Abstract The grain‐filling stage in Triticum aestivum (wheat) is highly vulnerable to increasing temperature as terminal heat stress diminishes grain quality and yield. To examine the mechanism of terminal heat tolerance, we performed the biochemical and gene expression analyses using two heat‐tolerant (WH730 and WH1218) and two heat‐sensitive (WH711 and WH157) wheat genotypes. We observed a significant increase in total soluble sugar (25%–47%), proline (7%–15%), and glycine betaine (GB) (22%–34%) contents in flag leaf, whereas a decrease in grain‐filling duration, 1000‐kernel weight (8%–25%), and grain yield per plant (11%–23%) was observed under the late‐sown compared to the timely sown. The maximum content of osmolytes, including total soluble sugar, proline, and GB, was observed in heat‐tolerant genotypes compared to heat‐sensitive genotypes. The expression of 10 heat‐responsive genes associated with heat shock proteins (sHsp‐1, Hsp17, and HsfA4), flavonoid biosynthesis (F3′‐1 and PAL), β‐glucan synthesis (CslF6 and CslH), and xyloglucan metabolism (XTH1, XTH2, and XTH5) was studied in flag leaf exposed to different heat treatments (34, 36, 38, and 40°C) at 15 days after anthesis by quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction. A significant increase in the relative fold expression of these genes with increasing temperature indicated their involvement in providing heat‐stress tolerance. The high differential expression of most of the genes in heat‐tolerant genotype “WH730” followed by “WH1218” indicates the high adaptability of these genotypes to heat stress compared to heat‐sensitive wheat genotypes. Based on the previous results, “WH730” performed better in terms of maximum osmolyte accumulation, grain yield, and gene expression under heat stress.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have garnered significant attention in the scientific community for more than two decades due to their cost-effectiveness, convenient manufacturability, little toxicity, and straightforward preparation methodology. In this study, we present a cost-effective alternative to the platinum electrode for DSSCs, which serves as the counter electrode. The utilization of vanadium oxide nanoparticles as counter electrodes (CEs) in DSSCs has been the subject of research due to its enhanced stability, cost-effectiveness, and favorable photovoltaic characteristics. The device has been fabricated in configuration of fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)||TiO2||ruthenium (II) dye (N719)||iodide—triiodide electrolyte||VO2 (counter electrode)||FTO and investigate their photovoltaic performance. The utilization of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis has provided insights into the crystalline properties of VO2, indicating that it exists in a crystalline phase with a crystalline size measuring 43.19 nm and a lattice strain of 1.68 × 10−3. The utilization of a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) that is equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrum reveals a dense microstructure characterized by a uniform distribution of vanadium (V) and oxygen (O) across the whole surface. The Raman spectroscopic examination of VO2 reveals the existence of many Raman bands, thereby confirming the presence of the monoclinic phase. Cyclic voltammetry measurements were employed to investigate the catalytic activity of the CE toward the electrolyte. The photovoltaic performance of the manufactured device was examined by I–V measurement, revealing a notable open circuit voltage (Voc) and efficient power conversion efficiency when compared to the other materials that were evaluated.

Background: Fracture of distal radius may be stable that is extra-articular, non-comminuted without distal radio ulnar joint disruption or unstable that is intra-articular, comminuted displaced with distal radio ulnar joint disruption. Complications of unstable fractures are shortening due to bone loss or due to resorption of the cancellous bone from metaphysis, resistant deformity, residual pain, late collapse, radio carpal arthritis and gross functional impairment. Aims and Objective: The purpose of this study to compare the relative efficacy of external fixation versus plating with regard to functional and radiological outcome. Materials and Methods: Total of 60 patients having intraarticular distal end radius fracture were included in this study and was equally divided into two groups, one group treated by external fixator other group with volar locking compression plate with or without augmentation by k-wire. Follow-up was done after 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks and 3 ,6 and 12 months. The radiological evaluation was performed with Sarmiento’s Modification of Lindstrom’s Criteria. With the Modified Mayo Wrist Score, the patient’s functional outcomes were assessed and both groups were compared. Results: In this study we found that volar plate group had good to excellent outcome in 73% cases and 07% with fair outcome however with external fixator group found good to excellent in 50% cases and poor in 17% cases. Conclusion: In our study, we showed that the use of an external fixator and a volar locking plate for the treatment of intraarticular distal radial fractures were reliable. The relative simplicity of use, low surgical exposure, and decreased surgical trauma are benefits of external fixation. Despite these volar locking plates augmented with or without k wire had a good to excellent results in terms of early rehabilitation and less complications related to wrist joint. External fixator with ligamentotaxis provide significant good results in communited intraarticular distal end radius fracture.

Introduction: In morphologically normal-appearing inner ears, measurements of the distance between the round window and carotid canal (RCD), the maximum diameter of the basal turn of the cochlea next to the round window (BD), and the thickness of the promontory (PT) just lateral to the basal turn may be used as guide for safe cochleostomy and implant placement.Materials and Methods:From January to March 2022, a cross-sectional observational study was carried out in a tertiary care hospital. The round window to carotid canal distance (RCD), the largest diameter of the cochlea's basal turn next to the round window (BD), and the thickness of the promontory immediately lateral to the basal turn (PT) were measured using CT temporal bone images of 150 persons without cochlear abnormalities. The values obtained were compared using Paired T-test for significance of difference between both genders and sides.Results:A total of 150 participants—75 men and 75 women—with a mean age of 37.5 years were enrolled in the study. With a range of 7.18 mm to 10.52 mm, the mean RCD was 8.84 mm (SD 0.8 mm). The mean BD was 2.27 mm (SD 0.4 mm), while the mean PT was 1.15 mm (SD 0. mm). The values obtained did not differ significantly in both the genders and the right and left sides (p = 0.37 and 0.24, respectively).Conclusion: The present study has defined and calculated pertinent measures at cochleostomy site that will aid safe electrode insertion and prevent misplacement.

Abstract Background Yellow or stripe rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) is an important disease of wheat that threatens wheat production. Since developing resistant cultivars offers a viable solution for disease management, it is essential to understand the genetic basis of stripe rust resistance. In recent years, meta-QTL analysis of identified QTLs has gained popularity as a way to dissect the genetic architecture underpinning quantitative traits, including disease resistance. Results Systematic meta-QTL analysis involving 505 QTLs from 101 linkage-based interval mapping studies was conducted for stripe rust resistance in wheat. For this purpose, publicly available high-quality genetic maps were used to create a consensus linkage map involving 138,574 markers. This map was used to project the QTLs and conduct meta-QTL analysis. A total of 67 important meta-QTLs (MQTLs) were identified which were refined to 29 high-confidence MQTLs. The confidence interval (CI) of MQTLs ranged from 0 to 11.68 cM with a mean of 1.97 cM. The mean physical CI of MQTLs was 24.01 Mb, ranging from 0.0749 to 216.23 Mb per MQTL. As many as 44 MQTLs colocalized with marker–trait associations or SNP peaks associated with stripe rust resistance in wheat. Some MQTLs also included the following major genes- Yr5, Yr7, Yr16, Yr26, Yr30, Yr43, Yr44, Yr64, YrCH52, and YrH52. Candidate gene mining in high-confidence MQTLs identified 1,562 gene models. Examining these gene models for differential expressions yielded 123 differentially expressed genes, including the 59 most promising CGs. We also studied how these genes were expressed in wheat tissues at different phases of development. Conclusion The most promising MQTLs identified in this study may facilitate marker-assisted breeding for stripe rust resistance in wheat. Information on markers flanking the MQTLs can be utilized in genomic selection models to increase the prediction accuracy for stripe rust resistance. The candidate genes identified can also be utilized for enhancing the wheat resistance against stripe rust after in vivo confirmation/validation using one or more of the following methods: gene cloning, reverse genetic methods, and omics approaches.

The capacity of Bambusa Tulda (BT) with chemical improvements to remove Malachite Green (MG) from water bodies is the main topic of this research. These improvements were achieved by employing an idealised Taguchi L16 orthogonal array design. The pH, starting dye concentration, bioadsorbent dose, and contact duration were all elements considered during the treatment process. Each one was found to have an impact. According to the findings, pH, preliminary dye concentration, contact duration, and bio-adsorbent dose in that order were the major elements in the elimination of MG dye. The optimal specific nitrification rate (SNR) conditions were determined to be pH-3, an initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L, a bio-adsorbent dose of 0.20 g/100 mL, and a contact time of 90 minutes. Contact time and bio-adsorbent dose were shown to have an effect on the results, while pH was the most relevant factor overall. This was confirmed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Adsorption occurred in a monolayer in the Langmuir isotherm model. The chemical may include hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, according to the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) data. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the exterior morphology of the Bambusa Tulda. Malachite Green dye may be removed from wastewater using a bio-adsorbent made from chemically enhanced Bambusa Tulda.

Abstract Background The genome of the largest known animal virus, the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) responsible for huge economic losses and loss of employment in aquaculture, suffers from inconsistent annotation nomenclature. Novel genome sequence, circular genome and variable genome length led to nomenclature inconsistencies. Since vast knowledge has already accumulated in the past two decades with inconsistent nomenclature, the insights gained on a genome could not be easily extendable to other genomes. Therefore, the present study aims to perform comparative genomics studies in WSSV on uniform nomenclature. Methods We have combined the standard mummer tool with custom scripts to develop missing regions finder (MRF) that documents the missing genome regions and coding sequences in virus genomes in comparison to a reference genome and in its annotation nomenclature. The procedure was implemented as web tool and in command-line interface. Using MRF, we have documented the missing coding sequences in WSSV and explored their role in virulence through application of phylogenomics, machine learning models and homologous genes. Results We have tabulated and depicted the missing genome regions, missing coding sequences and deletion hotspots in WSSV on a common annotation nomenclature and attempted to link them to virus virulence. It was observed that the ubiquitination, transcription regulation and nucleotide metabolism might be essentially required for WSSV pathogenesis; and the structural proteins, VP19, VP26 and VP28 are essential for virus assembly. Few minor structural proteins in WSSV would act as envelope glycoproteins. We have also demonstrated the advantage of MRF in providing detailed graphic/tabular output in less time and also in handling of low-complexity, repeat-rich and highly similar regions of the genomes using other virus cases. Conclusions Pathogenic virus research benefits from tools that could directly indicate the missing genomic regions and coding sequences between isolates/strains. In virus research, the analyses performed in this study provides an advancement to find the differences between genomes and to quickly identify the important coding sequences/genomes that require early attention from researchers. To conclude, the approach implemented in MRF complements similarity-based tools in comparative genomics involving large, highly-similar, length-varying and/or inconsistently annotated viral genomes.

The 26S proteasome is a molecular machine that catalyzes and degrades protein intracellularly with the help of its core complex called 20S proteasome. The 20S proteasomes degrade and cleave denatured, cytotoxic, damaged, and unwanted proteins via proteolysis and impart biotic and abiotic stress tolerance in model plants. This study identified 20 genes, namely, 10 SbPA and 10 SbPB that encode for α- and β-subunits of the 20S proteasome in Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench (2n= 20). These genes have been found distributed on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 10th chromosomes. These sorghum genes were orthologous to corresponding rice. Phylogenetic analysis clustered these genes into seven clades, each with one of the seven α-subunits (1 to 7) and one of the seven β-subunits (1 to 7). In silico gene expression analysis suggested that nine genes were involved in abiotic stress response (cold, drought, and abscisic acid hormone). The expression of these proteasomal genes was studied in shoots and roots exposed to different abiotic stresses (cold, drought, and abscisic acid) by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. A significant increase in the relative fold expression of SbPBA1, SbPAA1, SbPBG1, SbPBE1, and SbPAG1 genes under ABA and drought stress provides an insight into its involvement in abiotic stress. No expression was observed for cold stress of these genes indicating their non-involvement. It is believed that additional investigation into the SbPA/SbPB genes would aid in the creation of S. bicolor cultivars that are resistant to climate change.

In manufacturing industry, finding optimal design parameters for targeted properties has traditionally been guided by trial and error. However, limited data availability to few hundreds sets of experimental data in typical materials processes, the machine-learning capabilities and other data-driven modeling (DDM) techniques are too far from it to be practical. In this study, we show how a versatile design strategy, tightly coupled with physics-based modeling (PBM) data, can be applied to small set of experimental data to improve the optimization of process parameters. Our strategy uses PBM to achieve augmented data that includes essential physics: in other words, the PBM data allows the inverse design model to ‘learn’ physics, indirectly. We demonstrated the accuracy of both forward-prediction and inverse-optimization have been dramatically improved with the help of PBM data, which are relatively cheap and abundant. Furthermore, we found that the inverse model with augmented data can accurately optimize process parameters, even for ones those were not considered in the simulation. Such versatile strategy can be helpful for processes/experiments for the cases where the number of collectable data is limited, which is most of the case in industries.

Abstract Unsymmetrically disubstituted antiaromatic indenofluorene (IF), in comparison to aromatic pentacene counterpart with unsymmetrical disubstitution, was rare in the literature until our recent report on indeno[1,2-b]fluorene and indeno[2,1-a]fluorene. Described herein is a straightforward access to unsymmetrically disubstituted indeno[2,1-c]fluorenes bearing mesityl at one apical carbon and C6F5, 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3, and CCSii-Pr3 at the other apical carbon, including 4-methoxyphenyl/3,5-(CF3)2C6H3 push/pull substitution at the apical carbons with appreciable orbital density, and a previously unknown symmetrically C6F5-disubstituted [2,1-c]IF. The electronic properties of the unsymmetrical derivatives lie halfway in between the two symmetrical counterparts, while the 4-methoxyphenyl derivative showed the smallest HOMO–LUMO energy gap and near-infrared absorption with intramolecular charge transfer character. Single-crystal analyses showed 1D-columnar stacks for the unsymmetrical motif with the C6F5 units co-facially π-stacked with the IF core, whereas symmetrically C6F5-disubstituted [2,1-c]IF, with a low-lying LUMO, showed intermolecular π–π stacks between the IFs that resulted in good electron mobility (µ e = 8.66 × 10−3 cm2 · V−1 · s−1) under space charge limited current measurements. Importantly, balanced ambipolar charge-transport behaviour could be extracted for an IF series with symmetrical/unsymmetrical substitutions, in comparison to its π-contracted pentalene congener.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has reached a staggering number of almost 280 million cases worldwide, with over 5.4 million deaths as of 29 December 2021. A further understanding of the factors related to the household spread of the infection might help to bring about specific protocols to curb such transmission. Objective: This study aims to find the secondary attack rate (SAR) and factors affecting SAR among the households of mild COVID-19 cases. Methods: An observational study was designed where data of patients admitted at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi due to mild COVID-19 were collected, and outcome was noted after the discharge of the patient. Index cases who were the first in the household to have a positive infection only were included. Based on these data, the overall household SAR, factors related to the index case and contacts that affected transmissibility were noted. Results: A total of 60 index cases having contacts with 184 household members were included in the present study. The household SAR was measured to be 41.85%. At least one positive case was present in 51.67% households. Children below 18 years old had lower odds of getting a secondary infection compared to adults and elderly [odds ratio (OR) = 0.46, 95%CI = 0.22–0.94, p = 0.0383). An exposure period of more than a week was significantly associated with a higher risk of infection (p = 0.029). The rate of transmissibility drastically declined with effective quarantine measures adopted by the index case (OR = 0.13, 95%CI = 0.06–0.26, p < 0.00001). Symptomatic index cases contributed more to the SAR than asymptomatic primaries (OR = 4.74, 95%CI = 1.03–21.82, P = 0.045). Healthcare worker index cases had lower rates of spread (OR = 0.29, 95%CI = 0.15–0.58, P = 0.0003). Conclusion: The high SAR shows the household is a potential high-risk unit for transmissibility of COVID-19. Proper quarantine measures of all those exposed to the index case can mitigate such spread and lead to reduction of risk of COVID-19 within a household.

This article explores the charge compensation method by synthesising Sr _2 SnO _4 , Sr _2 Sn _0.99 Nb _0.01 O _4 , and Sr _1.995 Sn _0.99 Nb _0.01 O _4 . The synthesis of a monophasic, tetragonal sample was achieved using a typical ceramic approach and high-temperature heat treatment. The XRD followed by Rietveld refinement, confirmed the crystallization of material under the space group I4/mmm. The crystallite sizes for all samples determined to be less than 50 nm, while the micro-strain falls within the range of (1.78–2.93) × 10 ^–3 . The microstructure exhibits a cuboidal shape for all samples, and the grain size is observed to decrease with the addition of Nb. The dielectric characteristics of the samples indicate the existence of Maxwell-Wagner and Orientational polarization in the sample. The sample Sr _2 Sn _0.99 Nb _0.01 O _4 demonstrates a greater conductivity value compared to Sr _1.995 Sn _0.99 Nb _0.01 O _4 . This is attributed to the presence of excess electrons that compensate for the overall charge, as opposed to Sr _1.995 Sn _0.99 Nb _0.01 O _4 where the extra charge is compensated by a cationic vacancy ${V}_{{Sr}}^{{\prime\prime} }.$ The time-temperature-superposition principle (TTSP) is applicable to all compositions and indicates that similar sources are responsible for both conduction and relaxation processes. The dielectric permittivity and dissipation factor are found to be in the range of 150 to 175 and 0.2 to 0.5, respectively. This suggests that they have potential for future use in millimeter-wave communication with dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs). Due to the presence of oxygen ions and the ability to conduct both ions and electrons, at temperatures above 400 °C, it is a suitable choice for electrode materials in the application of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFCs). Exploring the manipulation of defects using electrical and ionic charge compensation methods shows potential for enhancing materials in semiconductor technology.

The role of biochar in improving the soil properties of problem soils is well known, but its long term impact on lowland rice soil is not well recognized. The soil quality indicators of biochar applied lowland rice soil are not widely reported. We developed soil quality index (SQI) of a biochar applied lowland rice soil based on 17 soil properties (indicators). Field experimentation consisted of six treatments such as 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 10 t ha−1 of rice husk derived biochar (RHB) along with control. An overall SQI was calculated encompassing the indicators using multivariate statistics (principal component analysis) and non-linear scoring functions after generation of minimum data set (MDS). Sequential application of RHB improved the SQI by 4.85% and 16.02% with application of 0.5 t ha−1 and 10 t ha−1 RHB, respectively, over the recommended dose of fertilizer (control). PCA-screening revealed that total organic carbon (Ctot), zinc (Zn), pH and bulk density (BD) were the main soil quality indicators for MDS with 27.79%, 26.61%, 23.67% and 14.47% contributions, respectively. Apart from Ctot, Zn is one of the major contributors to SQI and RHB application can potentially be an effective agronomic practice to improve Zn status in lowland rice soil. The overall SQI was significantly influenced by RHB application even at 0.5 t ha−1. The present study highlights that application of RHB improves the soil quality even in fertile, well managed, lowland rice soil.

This paper investigated the structural, optical, electronic and thermal characteristics of SrSnO3 perovskites that were calculated using the density functional theory. Software called WEIN2K is used to perform the calculation. According to our calculations, the band gap energy of the SrSnO3 is roughly 4.00 eV and it adopts a distorted cubic shape in the space group Pm3-m. The band structure and partial density of state reflects the major contribution of O 2p in the valence band while 5s orbital from Sn in the conduction band. The electron density plot significantly shows the contribution different clusters SrO12 and SnO6 that plays crucial role in electronic and optical properties. The creation of covalent bonds between the atoms of Sn and O as well as the ionic interaction between the atoms of Sr and O are both demonstrated by the electron density graphs and SCF calculation. The refractive index and extinction coefficient directly correlated with the real and imaginary part of complex dielectric function. Real part of dielectric function shows higher values at two major point of energy 3.54 eV and 9.78 eV associated with the absorption and optical activity of SrSnO3. Negative part of imaginary dielectric function part suggests metallic behavior also supported by -grep lapw method. Thermoelectric and thermal conductivity properties suggest the power factor need to be improved for the device application.

Abstract Chickpea is the most important nutrient-rich grain legume crop in the world. A diverse core set of 147 chickpea genotypes was genotyped with a Axiom(®)50K CicerSNP array and trait phenotyped in two different environments for four seed micronutrients (Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn). The trait data and high-throughput 50K SNP genotypic data were used for the genome-wide association study (GWAS). The study led to the discovery of genes/QTLs for seed Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn, concentrations in chickpea. The analysis of seed micronutrient data revealed significant differences for all four micronutrient concentrations (P ≤ 0.05). The mean concentrations of seed Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn pooled over the 2 years were 45.9 ppm, 63.8 ppm 146.1 ppm, and 27.0 ppm, respectively. The analysis of results led to the identification of 35 SNPs significantly associated with seed Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn concentrations. Among these 35 marker-trait associations (MTAs), 5 were stable (consistently identified in different environments), 6 were major (explaining more than 15% of the phenotypic variation for an individual trait) and 3 were both major and stable MTAs. A set of 6 MTAs, MTAs (3 for Mn, 2 for Fe, and 1 for Cu) reported by us during the present study have been also reported in the same/almost same genomic regions in earlier studies and therefore declared as validated MTAs. The stable, major and validated MTAs identified during the present study will prove useful in future chickpea molecular breeding programs aimed at enhancing the seed nutrient density of chickpea.

Soil microbial communities are important drivers of biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, organic matter decomposition, soil organic carbon, and Greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs: CO2, N2O, and CH4) and are influenced by crop and soil management practices. The knowledge on the impact of conservation agriculture (CA) on soil bacterial diversity, nutrient availability, and GHG emissions in semi-arid regions under rainfed conditions is vital to develop sustainable agricultural practices, but such information has not been systemically documented. Hence, studies were conducted for 10 years in rainfed pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.)—castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) cropping system under semi-arid conditions to assess the effects of tillage and crop residue levels on the soil bacterial diversity, enzyme activity (Dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase), GHG emissions, and soil available nutrients (Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium). Sequencing of soil DNA through Illumina HiSeq-based 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing technology has revealed that bacterial community responded to both tillage and residue levels. The relative abundance of Actinobacteria in terms of Operational Taxonomic Unit (OTUs) at phyla, class as well as genera level was higher in CA (NTR1: No Tillage + 10 cm anchored residue and NTR2 NT + 30 cm anchored residue) over CT (conventional tillage without crop residues). CA resulted in higher enzyme activities (dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase) and reduction in GHG emissions over CT. CA recorded 34% higher and 3% lower OC, as compared to CT, and CTR1, respectively. CA recorded 10, 34, and 26% higher available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium over CT and CTR1, respectively. NTR1 recorded 25 and 38% lower N2O emissions as compared to CTR1 and CTR2, respectively. Whereas only NT recorded 12% higher N2O emissions as compared to CT. Overall, the results of the study indicate that CA improves the relative abundance of soil bacterial communities, nutrient availability, and enzyme activities, and may help to contribute to the mitigation of climate change, and sustainability in rainfed areas.

Inappropriate statistical designs may misinterpret results of animal feed experiments. Thus complete statistical designs can make animal feed research more appropriate and cost effective. Usually factorial row-column designs are used when the heterogeneity in the experimental material is in two directions and the experimenter is interested in studying the effect of two or more factors simultaneously. Attempts have been to develop the method of construction of balanced nested row column design under factorial setup. Factorial experiments are used in designs when two or more factors have same levels or different levels. The designs that are balanced symmetric factorials nested in blocks are called block designs with nested row-column balanced symmetric factorial experiments. These designs were constructed by using confounding through equation methods.Construction of confounded asymmetrical factorial experiments in row-column settings and efficiency factor of confounded effects was worked out. The design can be used in animal feed experiment with fewer resources by not compromising the test accuracy.

Diabetic striatopathy is a rare clinico-radiological phenomenon characterized by hemichorea/hemiballismus, hyperglycemia, hyperosmolarity in the absence of ketoacidosis. It is due to lesion in contralateral basal ganglia which is evident as T1 hyperintensity in MRI brain study. Here we are reporting a case of hemichorea /hemiballismus which was associated with hyperglycemia. Our patient improved significantly once blood glucose was controlled adequately. As it carries good prognosis, we are reporting this rare case to illustrate the importance of recognition of this rare syndrome.

A field study was conducted from 2021 to 2023 in a rice–wheat cropping system in the Terai agro-ecological zone of West Bengal, India, using different management practices, i.e., tillage (conventional tillage, CT, and zero tillage, ZT), crop residue (R), and plant growth-promoting bacteria (B). This study was a part of long-term research on resource conservation technology (conservation agriculture, CA), undertaken on a research farm in Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Pundibari (Cooch Behar), West Bengal. The project was established in 2006 in acidic alluvial soil. The aim of this study was to evaluate rice–wheat productivity, nutrient uptake, soil quality, and profitability after the 16th and 17th crop cycles under the above-mentioned management practices. The results revealed that the pooled yield of rice grain and straw was significantly higher under the CT + R + B treatment than under the other treatments (ZT, ZT + B, ZT + R, ZT + R + B, CT, CT + B, and CT + R). However, the wheat grain and straw yields were significantly greater under the ZT + R + B treatment than under other treatments. The system’s grain yield and straw yield were significantly higher under the CT + R + B treatment, on par with ZT + R + B, compared to the other treatments. Nutrient uptake (nitrogen, N; phosphorus, P; and potassium, K) was increased by retaining R and inoculating B compared to the sample without R and without B. Soil properties, including organic carbon, available N, available P, and available K, were improved in all the treatments compared to the initial values, but the impact was greater in the treatments with R and B than in those without R and without B. In the 5–10-cm soil layer, the above-mentioned soil properties were also improved over the initial (2006) values by 37, 126, 65 and 60%, respectively, by applying the best treatment (ZT + R + B). In economic terms, the benefit–cost ratio was significantly higher under the CT + R + B treatment for rice crops (2.99) and ZT + R + B for wheat crops (3.37). Therefore, we can conclude that, after 17 years of cultivation, for rice, CT performs better than ZT; meanwhile, for wheat cultivation, ZT produces greater yields than CT in the Terai agro-ecological zone of West Bengal, India.

In wheat, lodging is affected by anatomical and chemical characteristics of the stem cell wall. Plant characteristics determining the stem strength were measured in lodging tolerant mutant (PMW-2016-1) developed through mutation breeding utilizing hexaploid wheat cultivar, DPW-621-50. Various anatomical features, chemical composition, and mechanical strength of the culms of newly developed lodging-tolerant mutant (PMW-2016-1) and parent (DPW-621-50), were examined by light microscopy, the Klason method, prostate tester coupled with a Universal Tensile Machine, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Significant changes in the anatomical features, including the outer radius of the stem, stem wall thickness, and the proportions of various tissues, and vascular bundles were noticed. Chemical analysis revealed that the lignin level in the PMW-2016-1 mutant was higher and exhibited superiority in stem strength compared to the DPW-621-50 parent line. The force (N) required to break the internodes of mutant PMW-2016-1 was higher than that of DPW-621-50. The results suggested that the outer stem radius, stem wall thickness, the proportion of sclerenchyma tissues, the number of large vascular bundles, and lignin content are important factors that affect the mechanical strength of wheat stems, which can be the key parameters for the selection of varieties having higher lodging tolerance. Preliminary studies on the newly identified mutant PMW-2016-1 suggested that this mutant may possess higher lodging tolerance because it has a higher stem strength than DPW-621-50 and can be used as a donor parent for the development of lodging-tolerant wheat varieties.

Introduction: There is brainstem atrophy with normal ageing. It is pertinent to determine, if this atrophy with ageing, is associated with significant alteration in the midbrain to pons ratio. Aim: To determine size and ratio of midbrain and pons area among adults and elderly. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional, analytical study was done in a tertiary care hospital, S Nijalingappa Medical College, Bagalkot, Karnataka, India from January 2022 to March 2022, including 200 apparently healthy adult and elderly participants. They were divided into two groups, 100 men (M1 ≤50 years and M2 >50 years) and 100 women (F1 ≤50 years and F2 >50 years). Each underwent multiplanar T1 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the brain. An experienced Radiologist identified midsagittal image, and measured midbrain and pons areas on that image. Mean and standard deviations of midbrain and pons area and midbrain to pons area ratio was estimated for each of the groups. Independent Sample t-test was used to determine significance of differences between groups. Results: A total of 200 participants were included in the study with mean age of 51 years and 3 months. The midbrain to pons area ratio among M2 and F2 groups ranged from 0.20 to 0.39, and in M1 and F1 groups it ranged from 0.23 to 0.47. Midbrain areas and midbrain to pons area ratio were significantly more among participants aged ≤50 years among both males (p-value=0.014 and 0.024) and females (p-value=0.011 and 0.032) in comparison with participants aged more than 50 years. Conclusion: Midbrain to pons area ratio decreases significantly in older age, and hence, age needs to be accounted for, while interpreting the ratio.

The core particle represents the catalytic portions of the 26S proteasomal complex. The genes encoding α- and β-subunits play a crucial role in protecting plants against various environmental stresses by controlling the quality of newly produced proteins. The 20S proteasome gene family has already been reported in model plants such as Arabidopsis and rice; however, they have not been studied in oilseed crops such as rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). In the present study, we identified 20S proteasome genes for α- (PA) and β-subunits (PB) in B. napus through systematically performed gene structure analysis, chromosomal location, conserved motif, phylogenetic relationship, and expression patterns. A total of 82 genes, comprising 35 BnPA and 47 BnPB of the 20S proteasome, were revealed in the B. napus genome. These genes were distributed on all 20 chromosomes of B. napus and most of these genes were duplicated on homoeologous chromosomes. The BnPA (α1-7) and BnPB (β1-7) genes were phylogenetically placed into seven clades. The pattern of expression of all the BnPA and BnPB genes was also studied using RNA-seq datasets under biotic and abiotic stress conditions. Out of 82 BnPA/PB genes, three exhibited high expression under abiotic stresses, whereas two genes were overexpressed in response to biotic stresses at both the seedling and flowering stages. Moreover, an additional eighteen genes were expressed under normal conditions. Overall, the current findings developed our understanding of the organization of the 20S proteasome genes in B. napus, and provided specific BnPA/PB genes for further functional research in response to abiotic and biotic stresses.

Grain yield is one of the most important aims for combating the needs of the growing world population. The role of development and nutrient transfer in flag leaf for higher yields at the grain level is well known. It is a great challenge to properly exploit this knowledge because all the processes, starting from the emergence of the flag leaf to the grain filling stages of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), are very complex biochemical and physiological processes to address. This study was conducted with the primary goal of functionally and structurally annotating the candidate genes associated with different developmental stages of flag leaf in a comprehensive manner using a plethora of in silico tools. Flag leaf-associated genes were analyzed for their structural and functional impacts using a set of bioinformatics tools and algorithms. The results revealed the association of 17 candidate genes with different stages of flag leaf development in wheat crop. Of these 17 candidate genes, the expression analysis results revealed the upregulation of genes such as TaSRT1-5D, TaPNH1-7B, and TaNfl1-2B and the downregulation of genes such as TaNAP1-7B, TaNOL-4D, and TaOsl2-2B can be utilized for the generation of high-yielding wheat varieties. Through MD simulation and other in silico analyses, all these proteins were found to be stable. Based on the outcome of bioinformatics and molecular analysis, the identified candidate genes were found to play principal roles in the flag leaf development process and can be utilized for higher-yield wheat production.

Due to the introduction of zero-till wheat in the Indo-Gangetic plains (IGP) in India, irrigation and fertilizer nitrogen (N) management needs to be modified from that followed under conventionally tilled fields. A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of irrigation and N levels on yield and N uptake by zero-till wheat, fertilizer N-use efficiency, and distribution of nitrate-N (NO3-N) in a soil profile under zero-till conditions in an acidic alluvial soil of the eastern IGP. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with four levels of irrigation as main plots (I0-no irrigation, rain-fed, I1-122 mm in one irrigation at 21 days after sowing (DAS), I2-263 mm in two irrigations at 21 and 42 DAS, and I3-386 mm in three irrigations at 21, 42, and 84 DAS) and 4 N levels [0 (N0), 60 (N1), 120 (N2), and 150 (N3) kg N ha−1] as subplots. Grain and straw yields were significantly higher at the irrigation level-I2 and 120 kg N ha−1-N2 over the control (I0 and N0) and were at par with the highest applied levels of irrigation and N (I3 and N3). The nitrogen uptake by wheat followed a trend similar to yield for irrigation levels; however, it increased significantly up to 150 kg N ha−1. After the harvest of wheat crop, more NO3-N was observed in the 60–90 cm subsurface soil layer than in the surface 0–15 cm and/or 15–30 cm and 30–60 cm subsurface soil layers. The highest NO3-N concentration was recorded in the treatment I2N2. Accumulation of NO3-N in the soil increased up to irrigation levels I2 and with increasing doses of fertilizer N application. Combined applications of irrigation and N had a positive and significant influence on agronomic efficiency (AE) and apparent N recovery (ANR) but had no significant effect on physiological efficiency (PE). This study suggests that an appropriate combination of irrigation and N levels in zero-till wheat can lead to not only high-yield levels and N-use efficiency but also adequately control NO3-N leaching under acidic alluvial soils in the eastern IGP.

Summary: Background: South Asia contributes more than a third of all global stillbirths, yet the causes remain largely unstudied in this region. New investigations, including novel assessments of placental and fetal tissues, facilitate more precise determination of the underlying causes of stillbirth. We sought to assess underlying and contributing causes of stillbirth from settings in India and Pakistan. Methods: In this prospective cohort study (PURPOSe), we report the cause of death in stillbirths in hospitals in central India and south Pakistan (Davangere, India [three public and private hospitals] and Karachi, Pakistan [one public maternity and one children's hospital]). Women aged 15 years or older and with a known stillbirth (defined as a pregnancy at 20 or more weeks of gestation with the in-utero death of a fetus) weighing 1000 g or more were included in the study. Maternal clinical factors, placental evaluation, fetal tissue evaluation (from minimally invasive tissue sampling), and PCR for microbial pathogens were used to identify the causes of death. An expert panel reviewed available data for all stillbirths to identify the primary and contributing maternal, placental, and fetal causes of stillbirth. Findings: Between Sept 1, 2018, and Feb 12, 2020, 981 stillborns were included and, of those, 611 were reviewed by the expert panel. The primary maternal causes of stillbirth were hypertensive disease in 221 (36%) of 611 stillbirths, followed by severe anaemia in 66 (11%) stillbirths. The primary placental causes were maternal and fetal vascular malperfusion, in 289 (47%) stillbirths. The primary fetal cause of stillbirth was intrauterine hypoxia, in 437 (72%) stillbirths. We assessed the overlap of main causes and 116 (19%) stillbirths had intrauterine hypoxia, placental malperfusion, and eclampsia or pre-eclampsia indicated as primary causes of death. Infection (including of the placenta, its membranes, and in the fetus) and congenital anomalies also were causative of stillbirth. Interpretation: In south Asia, fetal asphyxia is the major cause of stillbirth. Several placental lesions, especially those associated with maternal and fetal vascular malperfusion and placental abruption, have an important role in asphyxia and fetal death. Maternal hypertension, and especially pre-eclampsia, is often the primary maternal condition associated with this pathway. Funding: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Conversion of mangrove vegetation into rice cultivation is considerably enhanced nowadays which adversely affects ecological sustainability. Soil microbial community is one of the key indicators to monitor soil health in mangroves. Studies on the variations in the microbial community within mangroves are plenty, whereas reports in mangrove-converted paddy soils are scarce. Therefore, Biolog® eco-plate-based technique was used in this study to assess soil microbial community in the Bhitarkanika (MB) and Sundarban (MS) sub-humid tropical mangroves-converted paddy soil. The results showed that significantly lower soil microbial biomass carbon and enzyme activities were recorded in MB and MS compared to the NRRI (National Rice Research Institute) paddy soil where continuous rice cultivation is being practiced conventionally since 1946 under the sub-humid tropical region. Biolog®-based average well color development (AWCD) was found significantly lower in MS and MB compared to NRRI. Shannon–Weaver and McIntosh indices followed the similar trends of AWCD. A biplot analysis indicated the positive correlation of pH, available phosphorus, actinomycetes population, and phenolic compound utilization under MS, whereas EC and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria were positively correlated under MB. Compared to MS and MB, NRRI paddy soil harbored more carbohydrate-utilizing microbes and showed a positive correlation with fluorescin-diacetate, dehydrogenase, and acid phosphatase. Overall, the present study suggested that the conversion of the Sundarban and Bhitarkanika mangroves into rice cultivation adversely affected the microbial diversity, thereby altering natural sustainability.

Agroforestry systems (AFSs) have potential to combat climate change and to ensure food security. AFSs can sequester carbon and amend the organic matter, thereby enhancing the crop productivity. Carbon sequestration depends on the type of AFSs, climate, cropping pattern, and management practices. The aim of this study was to evaluate different AFSs for their potential to sequester carbon and impact on soil organic matter (SOM) in the eastern sub-Himalayas, India. Hedge-, alder-, and guava-based AFSs were established along with control (without any tree), and the maize–mustard–potato cropping pattern was followed in each AFS. Soil samples were collected after the fifth crop cycle and further analyzed. The results showed that crop productivity was significantly higher in all the AFSs than control. On average, soil organic carbon (SOC) was found to be significantly higher by 62 and 64% in hedge-based AFSs as compared to guava-based AFSs and control, respectively, and at par with alder-based AFSs. Particulate organic carbon (POC) was higher in all the three AFSs than in the control. For microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) contents, the trend of AFSs was expressed as alder-based AFS > hedge-based AFS > guava-based AFS > control. Hedge- and alder-based AFSs had higher SOC stocks than guava-based AFSs and control. Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2 eq.) emissions were greater in control than hedge-based AFSs (35.2 Mg ha−1), followed by alder-based AFSs (28.6 Mg ha−1), and the lowest was observed in guava-based AFSs. On an average, hedge species accumulated more nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), which were 60, 12, and 28 kg ha−1 yr−1, respectively. This conclusively proved that AFSs were significantly affecting SOM pools and crop productivity and had a significant role in carbon retention in the soil. Overall, hedge- and alder-based AFSs retained higher soil carbon, and hence, hedge- and alder-based AFSs may be promoted to achieve climate-smart agriculture practices in the acid soils of the Indian sub-Himalayan region.

Areca nut husk, an inexpensive, easily available agricultural by-product modified with sodium hydroxide has been applied to remove Brilliant green (BG) dye from aqueous solution. Surface characteristics and the elemental composition of areca nut husks were examined using Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The chemical treatment changes the surface morphology of the areca nut husk. The alkali treatment removes natural wax, resins and lignin from husks and thus it added extra active surface area and pores for better adsorption. The Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that the presence of functional groups (-OH), (-C=O), (-C=C), (-COOH). Experiments were performed in batch adsorption procedure. The optimum removal of 97% BG dye was obtained at pH 7.0, adsorbent dosage 10 g/L, initial concentration 100 mg/L, agitation speed 200 rpm and temperature 298 K. Adsorption data fit better to Langmuir model in comparison with Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of 18.21 mg/g was obtained. Kinetic date followed pseudo-second-order rate kinetic better than pseudo-first-order model. The thermodynamic parameters ΔH0 = 12.522 kJ/mol and ΔS0 = 0.044 J/mol indicate endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process. Taking considerations of all experimental results and model analysis, it is concluded that sodium hydroxide treated areca nut husk is a good, low cost and effective biosorbent for the removal of BG dye from aqueous solution.

Background: Resuscitation in trauma and nontrauma patients (RTNTP) is essential for prompt recognition, timely prevention, and effective management of life-threatening emergencies (LTEs). Optimal knowledge and skills of health-care providers (HCPs) are most important. Structured resuscitation training programs are lacking in peripheral districts and medical colleges to the best of our knowledge. Materials and Methods: A 3-day short training program on RTNTP was conducted in the month of February 2020 at the Bihar Orthopedic Association Conference, in which trainees from the peripheral medical colleges of the districts and practitioners participated. A preformed study questionnaire consisting of 20 questions on general awareness, knowledge, and skills was used for pre- and posttest training assessment in RTNTP among 37 participants. Results: The knowledge of resuscitation among participants improved from a score of 10.8–89.1% (range: 78.3, median: 51.3 with an interquartile range [IQR] of [16.2–68.8] 52.6) to 94.5%–100%. The same for general awareness and skill improved from scores of 5.4–91.8% (range: 86.4, median: 37.8 with an IQR of [27–72.9] 45.9) to 91.8%–100% and for skills 18.9%–67.5% (range: 48.6, median: 27 with an IQR of [67.5–18.9] 48.6) to 94.5%–100%, respectively. The availability and accessibility of RTNTP trainings are critically limited in India. Conclusion: By introducing short-term training courses regularly in the academics (wherever lacking, more so in peripheries) to HCPs, their skills for effectively managing the LTEs can be enhanced and stable changes can be made for quality care in LTEs.

Effects of LUC on soil physicochemical properties and changes in soil quality and land use management strategies that can effectively restore soil carbon and microbial biomass levels have been reported from all over the world, but the impact analysis of such practices in the Indian context is limited. In this study, over 1,786 paired datasets (for meta-analysis) on land uses (LUs) were collected from Indian literature (1990–2019) to determine the magnitude of the influence of LUC on soil carbon, microbial biomass, and other physical and chemical properties at three soil depths. Meta-analysis results showed that grasslands (36.1%) lost the most soil organic carbon (SOC) compared to native forest lands, followed by plantation lands (35.5%), cultivated lands (31.1%), barren lands (27.3%), and horticulture lands (11.5%). Our findings also revealed that, when compared to forest land, the microbial quotient was lower in other LUs. Due to the depletion of SOC stock, carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2 eq) emissions were significantly higher in all LUs than in forest land. Results also showed that due to the conversion of forest land to cultivated land, total carbon, labile carbon, non-labile carbon, microbial biomass carbon, and SOC stocks were lost by 21%, 25%, 32%, 26%, and 41.2%, respectively. Changes in soil carbon pools and properties were more pronounced in surface (0–15 cm) soils than in subsurface soils (15–30 cm and 30–45 cm). Restoration of the SOC stocks from different LUs ranged from a minimum of 2% (grasslands) to a maximum of 48% (plantation lands). Overall, this study showed that soil carbon pools decreased as LUC transitioned from native forestland to other LUs, and it is suggested that adopting crop-production systems that can reduce CO2 emissions from the intensive LUs such as the ones evaluated here could contribute to improvements in soil quality and mitigation of climate change impacts, particularly under Indian agro-climatic conditions.

Summary: Here, we present a robust protocol for the facile and rapid synthesis of functionalized secondary amines in continuous flow. More specifically, we describe a detailed guide to perform a photocatalyzed Petasis reaction within 50 min using alkyl boronic acid as radical precursor and a Vapourtec E-series as key equipment. The desired functionalized amine has been synthesized in mmol scale and with a productivity rate of 0.2 mmol/h. A type-II (with broken bandgap) W-shaped nano-heterostructure having layers combination of AlSb, InAs and GaAsSb compound semiconductors has been proposed which can be utilized as high intensity lasing source in MIR (mid infrared region). For this heterostructure, a multiband band k.p Hamiltonian has been simplified to compute the required carrier’s wavefunctions, their subband structures and matrix dipole elements accountable for the probabilistic transitions which results into the high optical gain. For 2-D charge carrier density of 1.5 × 1012 cm−2, the computed results confirm that only the light hole (LH) subbands take part in optical transition in order to produce the high optical gain of the order of ~8850 /cm which corresponds to ~5.2 µm. Keeping in view its high optical gain at ~5.2 µm, the proposed type-II AlSb/InAs/GaAsSb heterostructure can be useful in the environmental monitoring, particularly important for sensing the CO2, CO and NO toxic gases available in the polluted environment. Moreover, this type-II heterostructure can also play an important role in traditional applications such as industrial, medical, MIR spectroscopy, and telecommunications applications which require ~5200 nm wavelength.

Summary: Identifying the factors determining the RBP-RNA interactions remains a big challenge. It involves sparse binding motifs and a suitable sequence context for binding. The present work describes an approach to detect RBP binding sites in RNAs using an ultra-fast inexact k-mers search for statistically significant seeds. The seeds work as an anchor to evaluate the context and binding potential using flanking region information while leveraging from Deep Feed-forward Neural Network. The developed models also received support from MD-simulation studies. The implemented software, RBPSpot, scored consistently high for all the performance metrics including average accuracy of ∼90% across a large number of validated datasets. It outperformed the compared tools, including some with much complex deep-learning models, during a comprehensive benchmarking process. RBPSpot can identify RBP binding sites in the human system and can also be used to develop new models, making it a valuable resource in the area of regulatory system studies.

This study addresses the plant beneficial enterobacteria present in rice rhizosphere and their efficiency for enhancing nitrogen uptake in rice plant. Using culturable approaches, the population of total diazotrophs present in rhizosphere samples collected from different organic rice fields of Sikkim were studied and recorded in the range between 4.62 to 4.97 log10 CFU/g soil. All the isolated commonly occurred diazotrophic bacterial isolates were screened based on their ability to fix nitrogen in milligram per gram of sugar consumed under in-vitro condition with the reference check. In addition to nitrogen fixation, plant growth promoting traits such as production of indole-3-acetic acid and gibberellic acid were estimated using spectrophotometric approaches and compared against Bacillus subtilis as reference multi-potent plant growth promoting strain. In-vivo evaluation of these diazotrophic species in rice found improvement in both above and below ground responses in rice plant evaluated by estimating changes in chlorophyll concentration, plant biomass, root architecture, nitrogen uptake, microbial biomass and associated biochemical activity of soil. Cereal crop production gains under conventional agricultural systems in India have been declining in recent years because of inadequate management practices, creating a considerable concern. These activities were shown to deplete soil organic matter stocks, resulting in a decrease in microbial activity and soil organic carbon (SOC) content. Moreover, even with minimal use of organic sources in cultivated land, soil carbon status deteriorated, particularly in subtropical climates. Integrated nutrient management (INM), a modified farming method, has the potential to effectively utilize organic and inorganic resources, to improve the quality of soils and crops, and making farming more economically viable and sustainable. The aim of this study was to use meta-analysis to quantify the effects of INM on crop production, soil carbon, and microbial activity in Indian soils. During the years 1989–2018, data from various research studies in India, mainly on nutrient management in rice and wheat crops, were collected. Meta-Win 2.1 software was used to analyze the results, and significance was determined at p < 0.05. The results showed that the yield of rice and wheat was 1.4 and 4.9% more in INM than that in 100% NPK (N: nitrogen, P: phosphorous, and K: potassium), and that respective yields were comparatively higher in loamy soils (2.8%) and clayey soils (1.0%). The INM treatment increased SOC and microbial biomass carbon (MBC), resulting in improved overall soil quality. The SOC stock was increased by 23.8% in rice, 15.1% in wheat, 25.3% in loamy soils, and 14.4% in clayey soils in INM over 100% NPK. Microbial quotient (MQ) data showed significant trends between different management systems in both soil types, for example, INM > 100% NPK > No NPK. Due to more soil cracking and reduced aggregate stability in the rice field (greater short-term soil structural changes), the SOC stock loss in rice was higher than that in wheat. The CO2 equivalent emissions were 7.9 Mg ha−1 higher in no NPK (control) than in 100% NPK, and 16.4 Mg ha−1 higher in control than in INM. In other words, INM increased soil carbon sequestration by 2.3 Mg ha−1 as compared to using 100% NPK. Overall, the findings of this study show that INM could be a viable farming system mode in India for improving crop production, increasing soil carbon sequestration, and improving microbial activity while remaining economically and environmentally sustainable.

Summary: Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) are ideal platforms for the generation of a wide variety of organic scaffolds in a convergent and atom-economical manner. Many strategies for the generation of highly substituted and diverse structures have been developed and among these, the Petasis reaction represents a viable reaction manifold for the synthesis of substituted amines via coupling of an amine, an aldehyde and a boronic acid (BA). Despite its synthetic utility, the inherent drawbacks associated with the traditional two-electron Petasis reaction have stimulated continuous research towards more facile and tolerant methodologies. In this regard, we present the use of free alkyl BAs as effective radical precursors in this MCR through a single-electron transfer mechanism under mild reaction conditions. We have further demonstrated its applicability to photo-flow reactors, facilitating the reaction scale-up for the rapid assembly of complex molecular structures.

A large proportion of the Asian population fulfills their energy requirements from wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Wheat quality and yield are critically affected by the terminal heat stress across the globe. It affects approximately 40% of the wheat-cultivating regions of the world. Therefore, there is a critical need to develop improved terminal heat-tolerant wheat varieties. Marker-assisted breeding with genic simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers have been used for developing terminal heat-tolerant wheat varieties; however, only few studies involved the use of microRNA (miRNA)-based SSR markers (miRNA-SSRs) in wheat, which were found as key players in various abiotic stresses. In the present study, we identified 104 heat-stress-responsive miRNAs reported in various crops. Out of these, 70 miRNA-SSR markers have been validated on a set of 20 terminal heat-tolerant and heat-susceptible wheat genotypes. Among these, only 19 miRNA-SSR markers were found to be polymorphic, which were further used to study the genetic diversity and population structure. The polymorphic miRNA-SSRs amplified 61 SSR loci with an average of 2.9 alleles per locus. The polymorphic information content (PIC) value of polymorphic miRNA-SSRs ranged from 0.10 to 0.87 with a mean value of 0.48. The dendrogram constructed using unweighted neighbor-joining method and population structure analysis clustered these 20 wheat genotypes into 3 clusters. The target genes of these miRNAs are involved either directly or indirectly in providing tolerance to heat stress. Furthermore, two polymorphic markers miR159c and miR165b were declared as very promising diagnostic markers, since these markers showed specific alleles and discriminated terminal heat-tolerant genotypes from the susceptible genotypes. Thus, these identified miRNA-SSR markers will prove useful in the characterization of wheat germplasm through the study of genetic diversity and population structural analysis and in wheat molecular breeding programs aimed at terminal heat tolerance of wheat varieties.

There is a long history of coastal erosion caused by frequent storm surges in the coastal regions of Australia, which imposes great threats to communities and infrastructures alongside the beach. Old Bar Beach, New South Wales, Australia, is one such hotspot famous for its extreme coastal erosion. To apply remedial measures such as beach nourishment effectively and economically, estimating/reconstructing the subsurface hydrogeology over the coastal areas is essential. A geophysical tool such as a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) which works on the principle of reflecting electromagnetic (EM) waves, can be conveniently deployed to delineate the soil and rock profiling, water-table depth, bedrock depth, and the subsurface structural features. Here, DeepLabv3+ architecture based newly developed deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) were used to establish an inherent non-linear relationship between the GPR data and the EM wave velocity. The presented DCNNs have a lesser number of layers, a lesser number of trainable (learnable) parameters, a high convergence rate and, at the same time, achieve prediction accuracy comparable to that of well-established DeepLabv3+ networks, having high trainable parameters and a relatively low convergence rate. Here, firstly the DCNNs were trained and validated on small 1D datasets. Each dataset contains a 1D GPR trace and a corresponding EM velocity model. The DCNNs turned out to be quite promising in the 1D case, with training, validation, and testing accuracy of approximately 95%, 94%, and 95%, respectively. Secondly, 1D trained weights were applied to 2D synthetic GPR data for EM velocity prediction, and the accuracy of prediction achieved was approximately 95%. Seeing the excellent performance of the DCNNs in the 2D prediction case using 1D trained weights, a large amount of 1D synthetic datasets (approximately 1.2 million) were generated and gaussian noise was added to it to replicate the real field scenario. Thirdly, topographically corrected GPR data acquired over the Old Bar Beach were inverted using the DCNNs trained on 1.2 million 1D synthetic datasets to obtain the subsurface high-resolution, high-precision EM velocity, and εr distribution information to understand the hydrogeology over the beach. The findings presented in this paper agree well with the previous hydrogeological studies carried out using GPR. Our findings show that DCNNs, along with GPR, can be successfully used in coastal environments for the quick and accurate hydrogeological investigation required for the implementation of coastal erosion mitigation methods such as beach nourishment.

Introduction: Clinicians in the present scenario are always exposed to constant and sustained levels of physical and mental stress. As they form the backbone of healthcare setup, the health of clinicians themselves is a very significant factor towards providing good health to all. Aim: To determine the effect of Body Mass Index (BMI) on Work Related Musculoskeletal Discomfort (WMSD) and Occupational Stress (OS) in clinicians. Materials and Methods: The descriptive study with inferential design was conducted on 200 clinicians working in Out-Patient Department (OPD) clinics of various departments of our Medical College, various private hospitals and clinics of Jalandhar with approximate duration of study being one year. BMI was calculated as ratio of Weight (kg) to the square of height (m). WMSD and OS were determined through reliable and valid questionnaires and their values were associated with demographic variables via statistical tests of Chi-square, ANOVA and Student t-test to infer their inter-relational significance. Results: High BMI was reported more in above 40-year-old clinicians with higher incidence in surgical doctors than medical doctors. Majority (n=115) 57.5% of the clinicians were found to have mild musculoskeletal discomfort followed by no discomfort (23%) while 19.5% of them exhibited moderate to severe discomfort. Female clinicians showed more level of discomfort than male clinicians. BMI has high significance in relation to the questionnaire score. Clinicians with BMI >25 also showed high percentage (57.1%) of moderate and severe levels of OS. Conclusion: BMI is positively related to physical as well as mental well-being of clinicians, especially in the middle age group. This information serves as an awareness and warning signal for the clinicians to safeguard their own health.

Abstract Phase pure powders of SrCeO3 and Sr2CeO4 have been synthesized by calcination at 1000 °C for 14 h via solid state ceramic route. Ceramics/pellets of these samples have been obtained by sintering at 1200 ℃ for 12 h. The Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of sintered powders confirmed orthorhombic structure of both the samples with space group Pnma and Pbam for SrCeO3 and Sr2CeO4, respectively. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies indicated that both the compounds have dense microstructure, but morphology and size of the grains are different. The impedance spectroscopy technique has been employed to study the relaxation phenomenon. DC conductivity of the samples has been measured in the temperature range of 200–600 ℃ to understand the conduction mechanism. The activation energy for relaxation (E relax) and DC conduction (E cond) are found to be the same for both the compounds. Based on the numerical value of activation energies, relaxation and conduction mechanism in both the samples are attributed to migration of doubly ionized oxygen vacancies (Vo ••). Photoluminescence technique has been employed to confirm the existence of oxygen vacancies. These studies have indicated that migration of oxygen vacancies in Sr2CeO4 is occurring mainly along a and c direction, i.e., via perovskite cells. Further, the present work has clearly indicated that besides optical properties, electrical properties of Sr2CeO4 are also interesting and can be utilized for various applications such as oxide ion conduction electrolyte in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs).
