2. Periosteal expansion osteogenesis using a tubular dynamic frame device: An experimental study in rats.

Abstract

Periosteal expansion osteogenesis (PEO) is a technique for augmenting bone by creating a gradual separation between the bone and periosteum. This study assessed PEO‐induced bone formation around the femurs of rats using a dynamic frame device (DFD), consisting of a shape memory membrane made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) formed into a tubular shape. The DFDs, consisting of a PET membrane coated with hydroxyapatite (HA)/gelatin on the bone‐contact surface, were inserted between the periosteum and bone of the femurs of rats. In the experimental group, DFDs were suture‐fixed to the femur with 4–0 Vicryl Rapid; in the control group, 4–0 silk thread was used for fixation. Five rats per group were euthanized at intervals of 3, 5, and 8 weeks postoperatively. Bone formation was evaluated via micro‐CT imaging, histomorphometry, and histological analysis. Morphological analysis revealed new bone between the femur and the periosteum, expanded by the DFD, in all groups. The mean values of new bone were 0.30 mm2 proximally, 0.18 mm2 centrally, and 0.82 mm2 distally in the control group, compared to 1.05 mm2 proximally, 0.27 mm2 centrally, and 0.84 mm2 distally in the experimental group. A significant difference in new bone was observed in the proximal region of the experimental group. Histological examination showed that a single layer of newly formed neoplastic bone was noted on the cortical bone surface across all sites. The proximal portion displayed a bone marrow cavity at the center, encircled by a thick bone cortex with a layered structure. New bone formation was notable between existing cortical bone and the periosteum, particularly at both ends of the DFD. The use of PET in PEO was a viable option for achieving ideal bone morphology. Abstract

The authors have investigated a new utilizationof rice-hull from a viewpoint of the recycling. The rice-hull carbon-material (RHS carbon) is manufactured by mixing the rice-hull particles with a phenol resin, pressure forming, drying, and then carbonizing in the temperature range from 1173K to 1773K. Since the most of the inorganic component is Siin the rice hull, the most of the produced inorganic component in the RHS carbon is SiO2, which is stable under wet or water-ret conditions. Therefore, the RHS carbon is expected to be a high water-resistant material. In this study, the authors measure the compressive strength of the RHS carbon after water immersing and hygroscopic expansion in a deionized water. The compressive strength did not decrease after the water immersing. Moreover, the hygroscopic expansion of the RHS carbon was considerably low. These results clearly showed the advantage of the RHS carbon, comparing to the similar porous carbon materials made from rice bran.

Abstract

Based on our previous finding that a chromatography with titanium beads selectively binds phosphoproteins, including caseins, phosvitin and dentin phosphoproteins, we investigated whether bone phosphoproteins also bind to titanium. Bovine bone matrix proteins were extracted with 2 M urea/PBS after demineralization. The 2 M urea extract was directly applied to the titanium chromatography column as reported. The chromatogram showed an initial large peak at breakthrough position (non-binding fraction) and a smaller second peak eluted later (titanium-binding fraction). Both peaks were analyzed by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Stains-all staining which preferentially identifies phospho-proteins revealed that the first peak contained no positively stained band, while the second peak showed 4 or 5 distinctive bands indicative of bone phosphoproteins. To investigate the biological functions of the titanium-binding bone proteins (TiBP), we implanted them into calvaria of rats, combined with titanium web (TW), a highly porous titanium scaffold of thin titanium-fibers. Bone TiBP induced significantly enhanced bone formation, and new bone appeared connected directly to titanium fibers, accompanied by active blood vessel formations. Control TW alone did not induce bone formation within the titanium framework. These results demonstrate that the bone titanium-binding proteins include phosphoproteins which enhance bone formation when implanted into bone with titanium.

Abstract

Electrochromic tungsten trioxide (WO3) thin films are attracting renewed attention as transmittance-controllable windows for use in automobile, aircraft, and building applications. In order to achieve high electrochromic performance, high cycle stability, and high reliability, the microstructure and compositional homogeneity of WO3 thin films have to be optimized. In this study, non-doped WO3 and TiO2-doped WO3 thin films were fabricated from water-soluble precursors of tungsten and titanium, and their electrochromic response was investigated. Amorphous WO3 and TiO2-doped WO3 thin films were fabricated by calcining the spin-coated films at 573 K. The use of a PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymer as a porogen facilitated the redox reactions occurring on the thin film/electrolyte interface. Although the effect of TiO2-doping on the cycle stability of WO3 thin films has not been fully elucidated, this study demonstrated that TiO2 doping up to 15 mol% effectively enhanced the cycle stability.
