Abstract

Current language models require a lot of training data to obtain high performance. For Relation Classification (RC), many datasets are domain-specific, so combining datasets to obtain better performance is non-trivial. We explore a multi-domain training setup for RC, and attempt to improve performance by encoding domain information. Our proposed models improve > 2 Macro-F1 against the baseline setup, and our analysis reveals that not all the labels benefit the same: The classes which occupy a similar space across domains (i.e., their interpretation is close across them, for example "physical") benefit the least, while domain-dependent relations (e.g., "part-of'') improve the most when encoding domain information., Comment: Accepted at LREC-COLING 2024 more...

19. Environmental selection, rather than neutral processes, best explain regional patterns of diversity in a tropical rainforest fish

Abstract

To conserve the high functional and genetic variation in hotspots such as tropical rainforests, it is essential to understand the forces driving and maintaining biodiversity. We asked to what extent environmental gradients and terrain structure affect morphological and genomic variation across the wet tropical distribution of an Australian rainbowfish, Melanotaenia splendida splendida. We used an integrative riverscape genomics and morphometrics framework to assess the influence of these factors on both putative adaptive and non-adaptive spatial divergence. We found that neutral genetic population structure was largely explainable by restricted gene flow among drainages. However, environmental associations revealed that ecological variables had a similar power to explain overall genetic variation, and greater power to explain body shape variation, than the included neutral covariables. Hydrological and thermal variables were the strongest environmental predictors and were correlated with traits previously linked to heritable habitat-associated dimorphism in rainbowfishes. In addition, climate-associated genetic variation was significantly associated with morphology, supporting heritability of shape variation. These results support the inference of evolved functional differences among localities, and the importance of hydroclimate in early stages of diversification. 29. Potential Impacts of PIT Tagging on a Critically Endangered Small‐Bodied Fish: A Trial on the Surrogate Mountain Galaxias.

Abstract

Recent advances in PIT technology have led to smaller tags, meaning that this technology can be used to mark and monitor smaller‐bodied species, many of which are threatened. We examined the effects of 9‐mm PIT tags on the survival and growth of the Mountain Galaxias Galaxias olidus, using this fish as a surrogate for several threatened, small‐bodied galaxiids. We measured survival, growth, and tag retention in 34 tagged and 34 untagged fish held in aquaria for 90 d posttagging. Fish were randomly assigned to a treatment (tagged or untagged) and were weighed just prior to tagging and then at 7, 14, 21, 28, 42, and 90 d after tagging, with observations made 5–7 times per week to check for survival and tag loss. Survival did not differ significantly between tagged and untagged groups (79% and 88%, respectively), and there was no difference in weight gain or loss between the two groups over time. Tag retention rate was high (96%), with only one tag expelled by the smallest tagged fish (73 mm length to caudal fork). Our findings show that Mountain Galaxias are capable of successfully retaining 9‐mm PIT tags in aquarium conditions, suggesting that this technology is suitable for the monitoring of similar small‐bodied fish in the wild. 30. Cognitive Screening Tests in Huntington Gene Mutation Carriers: Examining the Validity of the Mini-Mental State Examination and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment

Abstract

Background: Due to high prevalence of cognitive impairment in Huntington’s disease (HD) gene mutation carriers, even before onset of motor symptoms, cognitive screening is important for the optimal management of patients. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) are widely used, but the validity for HD has only been evaluated in few studies with important limitations.Objective: To evaluate the discriminative validity of the MMSE and the MoCA for the assessment of cognitive dysfunction in HD gene mutation carriers, independently of motor manifestation and furthermore, to report estimated probabilities for cognitive impairment with different score ranges on the MMSE and the MoCA.Methods: 106 pre-motor-manifest and motor-manifest HD gene mutation carriers and 40 non-HD gene mutation carriers were administered the MMSE, the MoCA, and an extensive neuropsychological battery with operationalized criteria for cognitive impairment. The same physician and the same neuropsychologist performed all examinations; blinded to one another.Results: The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was 0.70 for the MMSE and 0.82 for the MoCA. The latter correctly diagnosed 82% of the cognitively impaired and not-impaired HD gene mutation carriers and non-HD gene mutation carriers, whereas the MMSE only diagnosed 73% correctly.Conclusions: The MMSE and the MoCA can both be used as cognitive screening tests in HD gene mutation carriers, but both have important limitations. Our results indicate that the MoCA is a better cognitive screening test for HD than the MMSE. In addition, our study provides estimated probabilities for cognitive impairment with different score ranges, which may be used as clinical guidelines in the interpretation of results from the two tests. more...

31. Big trouble for little fish: identifying Australian freshwater fishes in imminent risk of extinction

Abstract

Globally, freshwater fishes are declining at an alarming rate. Despite much evidence of catastrophic declines, few Australian species are listed as threatened under national legislation. We aim to help redress this by identifying the Australian freshwater fishes that are in the most immediate risk of extinction. For 22 freshwater fishes (identified as highly threatened by experts), we used structured expert elicitation to estimate the probability of extinction in the next ~20 years, and to identify key threats and priority management needs. All but one of the 22 species are small (<150mm total length), 12 have been formally described only in the last decade, with seven awaiting description. Over 90% of these species were assessed to have a >50% probability of extinction in the next ~20 years. Collectively, the biggest factor contributing to the likelihood of extinction of the freshwater fishes considered is that they occur in small (distributions ≤44km2), geographically isolated populations, and are threatened by a mix of processes (particularly alien fishes and climate change). Nineteen of these species are unlisted on national legislation, so legislative drivers for recovery actions are largely absent. Research has provided strong direction on how to manage ~35% of known threats to the species considered, and, of these, ~36% of threats have some management underway (although virtually none are at the stage where intervention is no longer required). Abstract

Background: People with Huntington’s disease (HD) have been observed to have lower rates of cancers.Objective: To investigate the relationship between age of onset of HD, CAG repeat length, and cancer diagnosis.Methods: Data were obtained from the European Huntington’s disease network REGISTRY study for 6540 subjects. Population cancer incidence was ascertained from the GLOBOCAN database to obtain standardised incidence ratios of cancers in the REGISTRY subjects.Results: 173/6528 HD REGISTRY subjects had had a cancer diagnosis. The age-standardised incidence rate of all cancers in the REGISTRY HD population was 0.26 (CI 0.22–0.30). Individual cancers showed a lower age-standardised incidence rate compared with the control population with prostate and colorectal cancers showing the lowest rates. There was no effect of CAG length on the likelihood of cancer, but a cancer diagnosis within the last year was associated with a greatly increased rate of HD onset (Hazard Ratio 18.94, p< 0.001).Conclusions: Cancer is less common than expected in the HD population, confirming previous reports. However, this does not appear to be related to CAG length in HTT. A recent diagnosis of cancer increases the risk of HD onset at any age, likely due to increased investigation following a cancer diagnosis. more...

35. Recovery of the red-finned blue-eye: An endangered fish from springs of the Great Artesian Basin

Abstract

The red-finned blue-eye (Scaturiginichthys vermeilipinnis) is endemic to a single complex of springs emanating from the Great Artesian Basin, Australia. The species has been recorded as naturally occurring in eight separate very shallow (generally <20 mm) springs, with a combined wetland area of ~0.3 ha. Since its discovery in 1990, five red-finned blue-eye (RFBE) populations have been lost and subsequent colonisation has occurred in two spring wetlands. Current population size is estimated at <3000 individuals. Artesian bores have reduced aquifer pressure, standing water levels and spring-flows in the district. There is evidence of spatial separation within the spring pools where RFBE and the introduced fish gambusia (Gambusia holbrooki) co-occur, although both species are forced together when seasonal extremes affect spring size and water temperature. Gambusia was present in four of the five springs where RFBE populations have been lost. Four out of the five remaining subpopulations of RFBE are Gambusia free. Circumstantial evidence suggests that gambusia is a major threat to red-finned blue-eyes. The impact of Gambusia is probably exacerbated by domestic stock (cattle and sheep), feral goats and pigs that utilise the springs and can negatively affect water quality and flow patterns. Three attempts to translocate RFBE to apparently suitable springs elsewhere within the complex have failed. Opportunities to mitigate threats are discussed, along with directions for future research to improve management of this extremely threatened fish and habitat. more...

36. Landscape genetics informs mesohabitat preference and conservation priorities for a surrogate indicator species in a highly fragmented river system

Abstract

Poor dispersal species represent conservative benchmarks for biodiversity management because they provide insights into ecological processes influenced by habitat fragmentation that are less evident in more dispersive organisms. Here we used the poorly dispersive and threatened river blackfish (Gadopsis marmoratus) as a surrogate indicator system for assessing the effects of fragmentation in highly modified river basins and for prioritizing basin-wide management strategies. We combined individual, population and landscape-based approaches to analyze genetic variation in samples spanning the distribution of the species in Australia’s Murray–Darling Basin, one of the world’s most degraded freshwater systems. Our results indicate that G. marmoratus displays the hallmark of severe habitat fragmentation with notably scattered, small and demographically isolated populations with very low genetic diversity—a pattern found not only between regions and catchments but also between streams within catchments. By using hierarchically nested population sampling and assessing relationships between genetic uniqueness and genetic diversity across populations, we developed a spatial management framework that includes the selection of populations in need of genetic rescue. Landscape genetics provided an environmental criterion to identify associations between landscape features and ecological processes. Our results further our understanding of the impact that habitat quality and quantity has on habitat specialists with similarly low dispersal. 38. Personality traits in Huntington's disease: An exploratory study of gene expansion carriers and non‐carriers

Abstract

Huntington's disease (HD) is associated with risk for developing psychiatric symptoms. Vulnerability or resilience to psychiatric symptoms may be associated with personality traits. This exploratory study, aimed to investigate personality traits in a large cohort of HD carriers and at risk gene‐expansion negative individuals (HD non‐carriers), exploring whether carrying the HD gene or growing up in an HD family influences personality traits. Forty‐seven HD carriers, Thirty‐nine HD non‐carriers, and 121 healthy controls answered the Danish version of the revised NEO personality inventory. Comparisons between HD carriers and HD non‐carriers were mostly non‐significant but the combined group of HD carriers and non‐carriers showed significantly higher scores on the facets: “hostility,” “assertiveness,” and “activity” and on the trait “Conscientiousness” relative to controls, “Conscientiousness” have been associated with resilience to psychiatric symptoms. Twelve HD carriers and non‐carriers were classified as depressed and showed significantly lower scores on “Extraversion” and “Conscientiousness” and significantly higher scores on “Neuroticism,” which are associated with vulnerability to psychiatric symptoms. Our findings suggest that, there is no direct effect of the HD gene on personality traits, but that personality assessment may be relevant to use when identifying individuals from HD families who are vulnerable to develop psychiatric symptoms. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. more...

Abstract

The spotted galaxias (or trout minnow), Galaxias truttaceus, is a species that is restricted to south-western and south-eastern Australia, but there has long been conjecture as to whether the geographically and Critically Endangered Western Australian populations represent a subspecies (Galaxias truttaceus hesperius). We provide evidence that Western Australian populations, on the basis of a combination of genetic, geographic and ecological criteria, should be considered an evolutionary significant unit, which merits management as a high conservation priority. Substructure at nuclear and matrilineal genetic markers is not suggestive of species-level divergence, but rather of discrete western and eastern Australian subpopulations with limited contemporary gene flow. In contrast to many eastern populations that are diadromous, all western populations are potamodromous. Adults live and spawn in riverine habitats and larvae drift downstream to coastal lakes, where they spend several months, before undertaking a distinct upstream recruitment migration as juveniles to colonise riverine habitats. Instream barriers that disconnect riverine and lentic habitats restrict distributional range and presumably affect reproductive success of Western Australian populations. Conserving the remaining populations in Western Australia will require ongoing efforts to reduce the impact of emerging threats, particularly those related to instream barriers, introduced species and reductions in water quantity and quality. more...

The purposes of this paper are to document the composition and distribution of fishes in the Alice Springs region of Australia, and discuss constraints on fish persistence in this arid region. Nine native and six exotic species were recorded; most exotics no longer exist. Except in Finke River, only one or no native species were found. Fish survival in the area is ameliorated by the exceptionally broad environmental tolerances and migratory abilities of many species, but ultimately depends upon the effects of geology, geomorphology, and the vagaries in pattern of sediment transport on water persistence. more...

The isoprostanes are prostaglandin (PG)-like compounds formed in vivo by free-radical-catalyzed peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids and are synthesized independent of cyclooxygenase. It has been debated whether the biological effects of the isoprostanes are exerted on prostanoid receptors [thromboxane A2(TP) receptors and prostanoid E (EP) receptors] or on a “unique” isoprostane receptor. We sought to define the receptors involved in the actions of isoprostanes on the porcine small intestine. Stripped intestinal sheets were mounted in Ussing chambers, and bioelectrical parameters were recorded. Serosal application of 8-iso-PGE2(pEC50= 5.71), PGE2(pEC50= 6.45 and pEC50= 5.04), and PGF2α(pEC50= 5.07) elicited concentration-dependent increases in the short-circuit current (ISC). No responses were seen with 8-iso-PGF2α. The TP receptor agonist U46619 induced transient increase in ISC, and the tissue responded to a further challenge to PGE2. Pretreatment withU46619 did not alter responses to a subsequent addition of either PGE2or 8-iso-PGE2. The TP receptor antagonist SQ29,548 significantly reduced responses to the TP agonist, U46619, but did not antagonize responses to 8-iso-PGE2. Homologous and heterologous desensitization between 8-iso-PGE2, PGE2, and PGF2αsuggested the involvement of prostanoid EP and prostanoid F (FP) receptors in the response elicited to 8-iso-PGE2. The effects of 8-iso-PGE2were not inhibited by tetrodotoxin. Pretreatment of the tissues with bumetanide significantly reduced the increase in ISC. 45. Clinical Markers of 6 Pre-dominant Coping Behaviors in Living With Parkinson Disease: A Convergent Mixed Methods Study

Abstract

People with Parkinson’s disease (PwP) experience a variety of symptoms and fluctuations in these, which they have to cope with every day. In tailoring a person-centered treatment to PwP there is a lack of knowledge about the association between pre-dominant coping behaviors and clinical markers among PwP. To describe and compare specific clinical markers between 6 suggested coping behaviors. Thirty-four PwP, who previously had been classified into 6 different pre-dominant coping behaviors, were included in this mixed methods study. Six primary variables were included in the descriptive analysis; motor function (UPDRS-III), non-motor symptoms score (NMS-Quest), change in bradykinesia score, apathy score (LARS), personality traits (NEO-FFI), and cognitive status (evaluated by a neuropsychologist). The merged results of this mixed methods study indicate that clinical markers as apathy, burden of non-motor symptoms, cognitive impairments and personality traits, have the potential to impact the coping behavior in PwP. In a clinical setting the markers; NMS-burden, degree of apathy, cognition, and personality traits may indicate specific coping behavior. Three of the six suggested typologies of coping behaviors differed from the other groups when comparing descriptive data. In order to improve patient care and guide the development of person-centered therapies, each PwP should be approached based on those typologies. more...
