Abstract: International audience; While the emergence of the Acheulean is well documented in East Africa at ~1.7 Ma, subsequent developments are less well understood and to some extent controversial. Here, we provide robust evidence regarding the time period between 1.6 Ma and 1.2 Ma, based on an interdisciplinary approach to the stratigraphic sequences exposed in the Gombore gully of Melka Kunture, in the upper Awash Valley of Ethiopia. Throughout the Pleistocene, the environment differed significantly from elsewhere in Africa because of the elevation at 2000 m asl, the cooler and rainy climate, the Afromontane vegetation, the development of endemic animal species, and the recurrent impact of volcanic activity. At Gombore IB, dated ~1.6 Ma, remains of Homo erectus/ergaster have been discovered, associated with a rich early Acheulean assemblage. The techno-typological analysis of the lithic record from Gombore Iγ (~1.4 Ma) and Gombore Iδ (~1.3 Ma), where substantial areas have been excavated, and the contrasting evidence from Gombore OAM Test Pit C (~1.2 Ma), suggest that the scarcity or lack of large flakes and large cutting tools at the two earlier sites is possibly not just the outcome of sampling bias, but rather of the adaptation of H. erectus/ergaster to the local resources, in a relatively isolated environment. The sites of Gombore gully provide new evidence on the complex pattern of human evolution and adaptation in East Africa during the Lower Pleistocene.

Abstract: International audience; Pleistocene archaeology records the changing behaviour and capacities of early hominins. These behavioural changes, for example, to stone tools, are commonly linked to environmental constraints. It has been argued that, in earlier times, multiple activities of everyday life were all uniformly conducted at the same spot. The separation of focused activities across different localities, which indicates a degree of planning, according to this mindset characterizes later hominins since only 500,000 years ago. Simbiro III level C, in the upper Awash valley of Ethiopia, allows us to test this assumption in its assemblage of stone tools made only with obsidian, dated to more than 1.2 million years (Myr) old. Here we first reconstruct the palaeoenvironment, showing that the landscape was seasonally flooded. Following the deposition of an accumulation of obsidian cobbles by a meandering river, hominins began to exploit these in new ways, producing large tools with sharp cutting edges. We show through statistical analysis that this was a focused activity, that very standardized handaxes were produced and that this was a stone-tool workshop. We argue that at Simbiro III, hominins were doing much more than simply reacting to environmental changes; they were taking advantage of new opportunities, and developing new techniques and new skills according to them.

Abstract: Upon infection, B lymphocytes develop clonal responses. In teleost fish, which lack lymph nodes, the kinetics and location of B cell responses remain poorly characterized. Fish pronephros is the site of B cell differentiation and the main niche for persistence of plasma cells. In this study, we undertook the analysis of the rainbow trout IgHμ repertoire in this critical tissue for humoral adaptive immunity after primary immunization and boost with a rhabdovirus, the viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV). We used a barcoded 5′ RACE-cDNA sequencing approach to characterize modifications of the IgHμ repertoire, including VH usage in expressed V(D)J rearrangements, clonal diversity, and clonotype sharing between individual fish and treatments. In the pronephros, our approach quantified the clonotype frequency across the whole IgH repertoire (i.e., with all VH), measuring the frequency of Ag-responding clonotypes. Viral infection led to extensive modifications of the pronephros B cell repertoire, implicating several VH subgroups after primary infection. In contrast, only modest changes in repertoire persisted 5 mo later, including VHSV-specific public expansions. The IgM public response implicating IgHV1-18 and JH5, previously described in spleen, was confirmed in pronephros in all infected fish, strongly correlated to the response. However, the distribution of top clonotypes showed that pronephros and spleen B cells constitute distinct compartments with different IgH repertoires. Unexpectedly, after boost, the frequency of anti-VHSV clonotypes decreased both in pronephros and spleen, raising questions about B cell circulation. A better monitoring of B cell response kinetics in lymphoid tissues will be an essential step to understand B memory and plasmocyte formation mechanisms in fish.

Abstract: International audience; Melka Kunture is a cluster of Pleistocene sites, extending over Σ100 km2 between 2000 and 2200 m asl, in the upper Awash Valley of Ethiopia. Starting around 2 million-years ago, the archaeological sequence includes sites with lithic productions of the Oldowan, Early Acheulean, middle Acheulean, final Acheulean, Early Middle Stone Age, Middle Stone Age and Late Stone Age. All over the Pleistocene, the climate was rainy and cooler than at the lower elevations of the Rift Valley, allowing the development of Afromontane vegetation. Hippopotamuses are ubiquitous and dominant in terms of biomass, but Alcelaphini are well represented, notably with genus Connochaetes and genus Damaliscus. Hominin fossils have been discovered in association with the Oldowan, the Early Acheulean, the middle Acheulean and the Early Middle Stone Age. Animal tracks and hominin footprints have also been documented, the latter ones in layers dated between 1.2 and 0.7 million-years.; Melka Kunture est un complexe de sites paléolithiques qui s’étend sur une centaine de km2 dans la vallée supérieure de l’Awash (Éthiopie), entre 2000 et 2200 m d’altitude. À partir d’il y a 2 millions d’années, il y a de nombreux sites avec productions lithiques de l’Oldowayen, de l’Acheuléen inférieur (Early Acheulean), de l’Acheuléen moyen et de l’Acheuléen final, et enfin du Middle Stone Age initial (Early Middle Stone Age) et du Middle Stone Age, suivis par le Late Stone Age. Le climat, frais et pluvieux a permis le développement d’une riche végétation de type afromontagnard. Les restes d’hippopotames sont omniprésents et dominent en termes de biomasse, mais les Alcelaphini sont bien représentés, notamment avec les genres Connochaetes et Damaliscus. Des restes fossiles d’homininés ont été découverts en association directe avec l’Oldowayen, l’Acheuléen inférieur, l’Acheuléen moyen et le Middle Stone Age initial. Des empreintes d’animaux et d’homininés ont également été trouvées, cesdernières dans des niveaux datés entre 1,2 et 0,7 millions d’années.

Abstract: The surface mixed layer (ML) in the Mediterranean Sea is a well stratified domain characterized by low macro-nutrient and low chlorophyll content, during almost 6 months of the year. Nutrient dynamics in the ML depend on allochthonous inputs, through atmospheric deposition and on biological recycling. Here we characterize the biogeochemical cycling of N in the ML by combining simultaneous in situ measurements of atmospheric deposition, nutrients, hydrological conditions, primary production, heterotrophic prokaryotic production, N2 fixation and leucine aminopeptidase activity. The measurements were conducted along a 4300 km transect across the central and western open Mediterranean Sea in spring 2017. Dry deposition was measured on a continuous basis while two wet deposition events were sampled, one in the Ionian Sea and one in the Algerian basin. Along the transect, N budgets were computed to compare sources and sinks of N in the mixed layer. On average, phytoplankton N demand was 2.9 fold higher (range 1.5–8.1) than heterotrophic prokaryotic N demand. In situ leucine aminopeptidase activity contributed from 14 to 66 % of heterotrophic prokaryotic N demand, and N2 fixation rate represented 1 to 4.5 % of the phytoplankton N demand. Dry atmospheric deposition of inorganic nitrogen, estimated from dry deposition of (nitrate + ammonium) in aerosols, was higher than N2 fixation rates in the ML (on average 4.8 fold). The dry atmospheric input of inorganic N represented a highly variable proportion of biological N demand in the ML, 10–82 % for heterotrophic prokaryotes and 1–30 % for phytoplankton. Stations visited for several days allowed following the evolution of biogeochemical properties in the ML and within the nutrient depleted layers. At the site in the Algerian Basin and on a basis of high frequency sampling of CTD casts before and after a wet dust deposition event, different scenarios were considered to explain a delayed appearance of peaks in dissolved inorganic phosphate in comparison to nitrate within the ML. After the rain, nitrate was higher in the ML than in the nutrient depleted layer below. Estimates of nutrient transfer from the ML to the nutrient depleted layer could explain 1/3 of the nitrate fate out of the ML. Luxury consumption of P by heterotrophic prokaryotes, further transferred in the microbial food web, and remineralized by grazers, is one explanation for the delayed phosphate peak of DIP. The second explanation is a transfer from ML to the nutrient depleted layer below through adsorption/desorption processes on particles. Phytoplankton did not benefit directly from atmospheric inputs in the ML, probably due to a high competition with heterotrophic prokaryotes, also limited by N and P availability at the time of this study. Primary producers, in competition for nutrients with heterotrophic prokaryotes, decreased their production after the rain, recovering their initial state of activity after 2 days lag in the vicinity of the deep chlorophyll maximum layer.

Abstract: International audience; Microwave hydrothermal processing was employed to obtain valuable gelling or bioactive fractions from U. pinnatifida, assessing the processing conditions following a biorefinery concept. It was identified a relevant impact on the antioxidant properties, sulfate, protein and oligosaccharides content, with the highest values above 200°C, although the maximum in fucose was obtained at 160°C. The lowest temperature involved the highest minerals and sulfate content of the solid phases. Rheology indicated that hydrothermal treatment at 160 °C is adequate to extract alginates with structural and viscoelastic properties similar to those commercially available. The incorporation of the hydrothermal residual solids in the proposed alginate matrices favored the development of systems with potential non-food applications applications. Selected extracts, after an intensification stage using ultrasound, featured interesting biological activities for two human cancer cell lines (A2780; HeLa 229) with percentage of cellular inhibition > 83 and 57%, without positive effects on A549 and HCT-116.

Abstract: Mastering the manipulation of chirality at the nanoscale has long been a priority for chemists, physicists and materials scientists, given its importance in the biochemical processes of the natural world and in the development of novel technologies. In this vein, the formation of novel metamaterials and sensing platforms resulting from the synergic combination of chirality and plasmonics has opened new avenues in nano-optics. Recently, the implementation of chiral plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis has been proposed theoretically as a means to drive polarization-dependent photochemistry. Nevertheless, the lack of synthetic procedures leading to the formation of robust plasmonic photocatalysts with chiroptical features has hindered the advancement of this field. In the present work, we demonstrate that the use of inorganic nanometric chiral templates for the controlled assembly of Au and TiO2 nanoparticles leads to the formation of plasmon-based photocatalysts with polarization-dependent reactivity. The formation of plasmonic assemblies with chiroptical activities induces the asymmetric formation of hot electrons and holes generated via electromagnetic excitation, opening the door to novel photocatalytic and optoelectronic features. More precisely, we demonstrate that the reaction yield can be improved when the helicity of the circularly polarized light used to activate the plasmonic component matches the handedness of the chiral substrate. Our approach may enable new applications in the fields of chirality and photocatalysis, particularly toward plasmon-induced chiral photochemistry.

Abstract: International audience; Organic clathrates, particularly those formed by hydroquinone (HQ) and gas mixtures, have been far less studied than other inclusion compounds, such as gas hydrates. In this study, experiments and molecular dynamics simulations were performed on mixed (CO2 + CH4)–HQ clathrates. Single crystals were synthesized using gas mixtures with different compositions, ranging from pure CO2 to pure CH4. The crystal structure, the guest occupancy in the clathrates, and the variation of the crystal lattice parameters according to clathrate composition were obtained by X-ray diffraction measurements. In addition, molecular dynamics simulations were performed on the same systems, with state-of-the-art molecular models and force fields. The experimental results obtained and the molecular dynamics simulation estimations were in good agreement. The clathration selectivity was also calculated on the basis of experimental results, and the composition of the solid phase was correlated with the composition of the gas phase at equilibrium. These new insights into these structures will be useful from both a fundamental and a practical point of view, particularly for further developing innovative gas separation techniques using HQ clathrates.

Abstract: Microplastics are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems, but little information is currently available on the dangers and risks to living organisms. In order to assess the ecotoxicity of environmental microplastics (MPs), samples were collected from the beaches of two islands in the Guadeloupe archipelago, Petit-Bourg (PB) located on the main island of Guadeloupe and Marie-Galante (MG) on the second island of the archipelago. These samples have a similar polymer composition with mainly polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). However, these two samples are very dissimilar with regard to their contamination profile and their toxicity. MPs from MG contain more lead, cadmium and organochlorine compounds while those from PB have higher levels of copper, zinc and hydrocarbons. The leachates of these two samples of MPs induced sublethal effects on the growth of sea urchins and on the pulsation frequency of jellyfish ephyrae but not on the development of zebrafish embryos. The toxic effects are much more marked for samples from the PB site than those from the MG site. This work demonstrates that MPs can contain high levels of potentially bioavailable toxic substances that may represent a significant ecotoxicological risk, particularly for the early life stages of aquatic animals. Abstract: We employ two approaches to tune the properties of concurrently inscribed volume polarization and surface relief gratings in nanocomposite thin films containing the azopolymer PAZO (poly[1-4-(3-carboxy-4-hydrophenylazo) benzensulfonamido]-1,2-ethanediyl, sodium salt]) and goethite (α-FeOOH) nanorods. The first one is applied on the stage of sample preparation by varying the concentration of the goethite nanorods from 0% to 15%. Then, different angles between the recording beams are set in the holographic scheme, which allow us to obtain gratings with spatial periods in the range from 0.86 to 2.51 µm. Surface relief modulation close to 300 nm is achieved as well as total diffraction efficiency in the ±1 diffracted orders of more than 50%. The influence of the incorporated goethite nanorods on the properties of both volume birefringence and the surface relief grating are discussed. Xunta de Galicia | Ref. Abstract: Fabry disease is a rare X-linked disorder affecting α-galactosidase A, a rate-limiting enzyme in lysosomal catabolism of glycosphingolipids. Current treatments present important limitations, such as low half-life and limited distribution, which gene therapy can overcome. The aim of this work was to test a novel adeno-associated viral vector, serotype 9 (AAV9), ubiquitously expressing human α-galactosidase A to treat Fabry disease (scAAV9-PGK-GLA). The vector was preliminary tested in newborns of a Fabry disease mouse model. 5 months after treatment, α-galactosidase A activity was detectable in the analyzed tissues, including the central nervous system. Moreover, we tested the vector in adult animals of both sexes at two doses and disease stages (presymptomatic and symptomatic) by single intravenous injection. We found that the exogenous α-galactosidase A was active in peripheral tissues as well as the central nervous system and prevented glycosphingolipid accumulation in treated animals up to 5 months following injection. Antibodies against α-galactosidase A were produced in 9 out of 32 treated animals, although enzyme activity in tissues was not significantly affected. These results demonstrate that scAAV9-PGK-GLA can drive widespread and sustained expression of α-galactosidase A, cross the blood brain barrier after systemic delivery, and reduce pathological signs of the Fabry disease mouse model., Graphical Abstract, This study focuses on the development of a novel gene therapy vector for Fabry disease (FD). The approach is based on the systemic delivery of an AAV9, which crosses the blood brain barrier and drives sustained expression of α-galactosidase A, reducing pathological signs in multiple organs of a FD mouse model, including the central nervous system.

Abstract: International audience; Octahedron-shaped cobalt oxide nanocrystals undergo a structural evolution once coated with thin shells of manganese or cobalt ferrite, by means of an asymmetric solid–solid diffusion occurring at the interface established between the oxides. The resultant mixed ferrites in the final nanostructures stem from the phase progression associated with a nonequilibrium kinetic product that evolves to reach the thermodynamic equilibrium. In this process, the initially strained crystalline lattice closer to the interface influences the progressive redistribution of Co2+ cations diffusing out of the initial cobalt oxide core, dictating the final magnetic properties. When starting with a nonstoichiometric manganese ferrite shell, the preferential occupation of tetrahedral sites by Mn2+ cations forces the Co2+ to occupy octahedral sites, offering a Mn- and Co-doped magnetite shell onto the CoO core. However, when starting with a cobalt ferrite shell, an extra doping of Co2+ cations in the strained layers close to the interface forces this ferrite to transition from the inverse to the normal spinel structure, leading to core–shell nanocrystals of CoO and Co-rich cobalt ferrite with an enhanced magnetic moment.

Abstract: Menstrual problems affect many young women worldwide, conditioning both their academic performance and quality of life. This study sought to analyse the prevalence of menstrual problems and their possible relationship with lifestyle among Spanish university women, as part of a research project (UniHcos Project) involving a cohort of 11 Spanish universities with 7208 university students. A descriptive analysis was performed using the bivariate chi-square test and the Student&rsquo, s t-test together with a binary logistic regression, in which the dependent variable was &lsquo, suffering from menstrual problems&rsquo, Menstrual problems were identified in 23.8% of the students, representing women who paid more visits to the doctor and to emergency rooms, and who consumed more painkillers and contraceptives. In relation to dietary preferences, menstrual problems were 1.39 (CI 95% 1.22&ndash, 1.61, p = 0.000) times more likely among women classified as high-risk alcohol users according to the AUDIT questionnaire, and 1.187 (CI 95% 1.029&ndash, 1.370, p = 0.019) times greater among those who consumed sweets daily, 1.592 (CI 95% 1.113&ndash, 2.276, p = 0.011) times more frequent among those who eat fish daily, and 1.199 (CI 95% 1.004&ndash, 1.432, p = 0.045) times greater among those who were dieting. Menstrual problems affect many college students and potentially modifiable lifestyle variables exist which may influence their prevalence. It would be interesting to develop programmes to promote women&rsquo, s health in the university context.

Abstract: The area comprising the Pyrenees, Northeast Spain, Southern France and Corsica-Sardinia supports a large part of the diversity of Lumbricidae earthworms, including most species of the endemic genera Prosellodrilus, Cataladrilus and Scherotheca. In this region, the probability of encountering new species for science is significant, especially in scarcely sampled localities. In this study, we describe two unidentified species recently collected in the Hyères Archipelago (France), which we assigned to the genera Cataladrilus and Scherotheca based on morphological characters and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Other species of Scherotheca from Montpellier (including the type species of the genus, Sc. gigas gigas) were included in the analysis to clarify their conflicting systematics. A reduced molecular marker set (COI, 16S, 28S and ND1) proved as successful as larger marker sets for identifying phylogenetic relationships within the Lumbricidae. Remarkable disjunctions between both Cataladrilus porquerollensis Marchán & Decäens sp. nov., Scherotheca portcrosana Marchán & Decäens sp. nov. and their most closely related relatives, suggesting a strong influence of paleogeographic events on the earthworm fauna of the area and a possible role of near-shore islands as refugia for relict taxa. Genetic distances and branch lengths supported the elevation of some subspecies of Scherotheca to specific status as well as the retention of other subspecies, highlighting the importance of testing for such delimitation with molecular methods.

Abstract: International audience; This study reports the synthesis and the characterization of ethylene glycol silver-based nanofluids produced from the polyol process. This synthesis process is based on the reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) with the presence of the aqueous emulsion of latex copolymer, used here for the first time along with ethylene glycol. The influence of latex copolymer content for a fixed amount of AgNO3 for the production of silver-based nanofluids is investigated. The efficiency of the synthesis process is demonstrated from UV-Vis spectrometry, TEM and EDS characterization of the nanofluids. In addition, the dynamic viscosity of both the base fluids and nanofluids is experimentally measured over a wide shear rate and temperature range. While the base fluids behave in a non-Newtonian manner due to the presence of copolymer nanoparticles, it appears that the nanofluids are simply Newtonian without any noticeable viscosity enhancement compared to pure ethylene glycol. The thermal conductivity of the produced ethylene glycol silver-based nanofluids shows an enhancement of about 3% for the higher initial contents in copolymer latex. Such a thermophysical profile of ethylene glycol silver-based nanofluids is promising for their potential applications as circulating heat transfer fluids.

Abstract: This paper presents the preparation and thermal/physical characterization of phase change materials (PCMs) based on poly(ethylene glycol) 400 g&middot, mol&minus, 1 and nano-enhanced by either carbon black (CB), a raw graphite/diamond nanomixture (G/D-r), a purified graphite/diamond nanomixture (G/D-p) or nano-Diamond nanopowders with purity grades of 87% or 97% (nD87 and nD97, respectively). Differential scanning calorimetry and oscillatory rheology experiments were used to provide an insight into the thermal and mechanical changes taking place during solid-liquid phase transitions of the carbon-based suspensions. PEG400-based samples loaded with 1.0 wt.% of raw graphite/diamond nanomixture (G/D-r) exhibited the lowest sub-cooling effect (with a reduction of ~2 K regarding neat PEG400). The influences that the type of carbon-based nanoadditive and nanoparticle loading (0.50 and 1.0 wt.%) have on dynamic viscosity, thermal conductivity, density and surface tension were also investigated in the temperature range from 288 to 318 K. Non-linear rheological experiments showed that all dispersions exhibited a non-Newtonian pseudo-plastic behavior, which was more noticeable in the case of carbon black nanofluids at low shear rates. The highest enhancements in thermal conductivity were observed for graphite/diamond nanomixtures (3.3&ndash, 3.6%), while nano-diamond suspensions showed the largest modifications in density (0.64&ndash, 0.66%). Reductions in surface tension were measured for the two nano-diamond nanopowders (nD87 and nD97), while slight increases (within experimental uncertainties) were observed for dispersions prepared using the other three carbon-based nanopowders. Finally, a good agreement was observed between the experimental surface tension measurements performed using a Du No&uuml, y ring tensiometer and a drop-shape analyzer.

Abstract: The Mediterranean Large Elasmobranchs Monitoring (MEDLEM) database contains more than 3,000 records (with more than 4,000 individuals) of large elasmobranch species from 21 different countries around the Mediterranean and Black seas, observed from 1666 to 2017. The principal species included in the archive are the devil ray (1,868 individuals), the basking shark (935 individuals), the blue shark (622 individuals), and the great white shark (342 individuals). In the last decades, other species such as the thresher shark (187 individuals), the shortfin mako (180 individuals), and the spiny butterfly ray (138) were reported with increasing frequency. This was possibly due to increased public awareness on the conservation status of sharks, and the consequent development of new monitoring programs. MEDLEM does not have homogeneous reporting coverage throughout the Mediterranean and Black seas and it should be considered as a database of observed species presence. Scientific monitoring efforts in the south-eastern Mediterranean and Black seas are generally lower than in the northern sectors and the absence of some species in our database does not imply their actual absence in these regions. However,the available data allowed us to analyse the frequency and spatial distribution of records, the size frequencies for a few selected species, the overall area coverage, and which species are involved as bycatch by different fishing gears., Sí

The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology created a task force to assess the state of the art and future potential of mHealth in allergology. The task force endorsed the "Be He@lthy, Be Mobile" WHO initiative and debated the quality, usability, efficiency, advantages, limitations, and risks of mobile solutions for allergic diseases. The results are summarized in this position paper, analyzing also the regulatory background with regard to the "General Data Protection Regulation" and Medical Directives of the European Community. The task force assessed the design, user engagement, content, potential of inducing behavioral change, credibility/accountability, and privacy policies of mHealth products. The perspectives of healthcare professionals and allergic patients are discussed, underlining the need of thorough investigation for an effective design of mHealth technologies as auxiliary tools to improve quality of care. Within the context of precision medicine, these could facilitate the change in perspective from clinician- to patient-centered care. The current and future potential of mHealth is then examined for specific areas of allergology, including allergic rhinitis, aerobiology, allergen immunotherapy, asthma, dermatological diseases, food allergies, anaphylaxis, insect venom, and drug allergy. The impact of mobile technologies and associated big data sets are outlined. Facts and recommendations for future mHealth initiatives within EAACI are listed.

20. The microwave assisted extraction sway on the features of antioxidant compounds and gelling biopolymers from Mastocarpus stellatus

Abstract: International audience; Microwave assisted water extraction of hybrid carrageenan and antioxidant compounds from Mastocarpus stellatus red alga was first proposed to recover biopolymers with specific rheological properties, saving time, avoiding chemicals and enhancing extraction yields when compared with conventional treatments. The hybrid carrageenans, precipitated from the liquid fractions recovered after microwave assisted water extraction were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflectance, high-performance size-exclusion chromatography and rheology. The corresponding soluble extracts were also characterized by total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, proteins, sulfate and carbohydrate content. The highest phenolic, antioxidant capacity and sulfate content were observed at 190 °C, without notable effect of heating time between 3 and 6 min. In contrast, a clear impact of both microwave heating temperature and time on the molecular weight distribution of hybrid carrageenans as well as on the viscoelastic behavior of formulated hydrogels was identified, being the strongest hydrogels achieved at 170 °C for 6 min. It should be highlighted that all proposed hydrogels exhibited stable mechanical properties in the absence of syneresis for a month of cold storage, except those made with biopolymers obtained with the mildest extraction conditions (3 min at 70 °C).

Abstract: International audience; There is a dearth of long, highly resolved records that document the evolution of the Indian Ocean sector of the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) over the last several glacial-interglacial cycles. Here we present new geochemical records (δ13C, δ18O, Mg/Ca) that were measured at multi-centennial resolution through the last half a million years in both surface and thermocline dwelling planktic foraminifera from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1443 (5°23.05’N, 90°21.67’E, 2,924 m water depth). The data document the hydrographic variability in the upper water column at a site that is located in the eastern Indian Ocean, within the core of the IPWP. We will discuss at the obliquity and precession bands the coherence and phase of the IODP Site U1443 time series relative to key climate variables, such as insolation, atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, ice volume, high latitude and global temperatures, and Asian Monsoon intensity. We will also evaluate the implications of our new results for our understanding of the orbital-scale variability of the IPWP.

Abstract: Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. However, high species dissimilarity across tropical locations may cause diversity across the entirety of the tropics to be higher than elsewhere. Climate variables were found to be more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat cover. Abstract: International audience; The Ephemare project was supported in the period 2015–2018 by JPI Oceans, as one of 4 sister projects in the joint action on ecological aspects of microplastics. Ephemare investigated several issues concerning the ecotoxicological effects of microplastics (MPs) in marine organisms. Ephemare included 16 European Institutions from 10 Countries and was organized into seven, highly complementary Work Packages (WPs) with the aim to elucidate adsorption and release of chemicals to/from MPs, coupled with MP ingestion rates, translocation in different tissues, trophic transfer and egestion, potential toxicological effects and mechanisms of action, as well as real distributions of MPs in marine organisms from several European areas.

Abstract: Long-term immunity is of great importance for protection against pathogens and has been extensively studied in mammals. Successive heterologous infections can affect the maintenance of immune memory, inducing attrition of T memory cells and diminishing B cell mediated protection. In fish, the basis of immune memory and the mechanisms of immunization to heterologous pathogens remain poorly understood. We sequentially immunized isogenic rainbow trout with two immunologically distinct viruses, VHSV and IPNV, either with one virus only or in combination, and analyzed the antibody responses and repertoires. Neutralizing antibodies and ELISPOT did not reveal an effect of heterologous immunization. Using a consensus read sequencing approach that incorporates unique barcodes to each cDNA molecule, we focused on the diversity expressed by selected responding VH/C combinations. We identified both public and private responses against VHSV and/or IPNV in all groups of fish. In fish immunized with two viruses, we registered no significant reduction in the persistence of the response toward the primary immunization. Similarly, the response to the second immunization was not affected by a prior vaccination to the other virus. Our data suggest that heterologous immunization does not enforce attrition of pre-existing antibody producing cells, which may impair the protection afforded by multiple successive vaccinations. These observations are potentially important to improve vaccination strategies practiced in aquaculture.

Abstract: Ulva lactuca is a green macro alga involved in devastating green tides observed worldwide. These green tides or blooms are a consequence of human activities. Ulva blooms occur mainly in shallow waters and the decomposition of this alga can produce dangerous vapors. Ulva lactuca is a species usually resembling lettuce, but genetic analyses demonstrated that other green algae with tubular phenotypes were U. lactuca clades although previously described as different species or even genera. The capacity for U. lactuca to adopt different phenotypes can be due to environment parameters, such as the degree of water salinity or symbiosis with bacteria. No efficient ways have been discovered to control these green tides, but the Mediterranean seas appear to be protected from blooms, which disappear rapidly in springtime. Ulva contains commercially valuable components, such as bioactive compounds, food or biofuel. The biomass due to this alga collected on beaches every year is beginning to be valorized to produce valuable compounds. This review describes different processes and strategies developed to extract these different valuable components.

Paris-Saclay, ABSTRACT: The encapsulation of glucocorticoids, such as dexamethasone, in nanoparticles (NPs) faces two main issues: a low drug loading and the destabilization of the nanoparticle suspension due to drug crystallization. Here, we successfully formulated a prodrug of dexamethasone, dexamethasone palmitate (DXP), into nanoparticles stabilized by the sole presence of distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[methoxy(poly(ethylene glycol))-2000] (DSPE-PEG 2000). Two formulation processes, nanoprecipitation and emulsion-evaporation, allowed the formation of stable nanoparticles. By adjusting the drug/lipid ratio and the DXP concentration, nanoparticles of DXP (DXP-NPs) with a size between 130 and 300 nm can be obtained. Owing to the presence of DSPE-PEG 2000 , a high drug entrapment efficiency of 98% w/w was reached for both processes, corresponding to a very high equivalent dexamethasone drug loading of around 50% w/w in the absence of crystallization upon storage at 4°C. The anti-inflammatory activity of DXP-NPs was preserved when incubated with macrophages activated with lipopolysaccharide. Pharmacokinetics parameters were evaluated after intravenous (IV) injection of DXP-NPs to healthy mice. The release of DXM from DXP-NPs in plasma was clearly controlled up to 18 h compared with the free drug, which was rapidly eliminated from plasma after administration. In conclusion, a novel type of nanoparticle combining the advantages of prodrugs and nanoparticles was designed, easy to produce with a high loading efficiency and leading to modified pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution after IV administration.

Abstract: International audience; The sum-over-states (SOS) method allows the computation of polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities additively from the contributions of different electronic excited states in a given molecule or cluster. Subsequent analysis of the main excited configurations contributing to the relevant excited states allows characterizing the orbitals involved in the linear and nonlinear optical response. Unfortunately, the chemically relevant information that can be obtained by SOS is hindered by a series of methodological and computational drawbacks. Among these drawbacks, we can highlight the high computational cost, problems arising from nonconvergent series and errors caused by the inaccurate description of excitation energies and/or higher excited state matrix elements. For this reason, coupled-perturbed schemes are currently widely used to determine the NLO potential of molecules and materials. However, such a choice limits the amount of intuitive chemical information that, on the other hand, can be retrieved by a successful SOS computation. In this work, we present and discuss a novel computational strategy that offers the means to extract the useful chemical insights from a coupled-perturbed calculation at almost negligible extra computational cost providing a transparent picture about orbital contributions to the properties of interest. The proposed method is based on the generation and further analysis of field-induced orbitals, FIOs, from the analytic or numerical derivatives of the dipole moment. Orbital symmetry rules are derived using group theory and the method is tested for a series of small and medium size systems.

Abstract: International audience; A plethora of bibliometric indicators is available nowadays to gauge research performance. The spectrum of bibliometric based measures is very broad, from purely size-dependent indicators (e.g. raw counts of scientific contributions and/or citations) up to size-independent measures (e.g. citations per paper, publications or citations per researcher), through a number of indicators that effectively combine quantitative and qualitative features (e.g. the h-index). In this paper we present a straightforward procedure to evaluate the scientific contribution of territories and institutions that combines size-dependent and scale-free measures. We have analysed in the paper the scientific production of 189 countries in the period 2006-2015. Our approach enables effective global and field-related comparative analyses of the scientific productions of countries and academic/research institutions. Furthermore, the procedure helps to identifying strengths and weaknesses of a given country or institution, by tracking variations of performance ratios across research fields. Moreover, by using a straightforward wealth-index, we show how research performance measures are highly associated with the wealth of countries and territories. Given the simplicity of the methods introduced in this paper and the fact that their results are easily understandable by non-specialists, we believe they could become a useful tool for the assessment of the research output of countries and institutions.

Abstract: International audience; Electrolytic dissolution of aluminide coatings on model (pure Ni, Ni20Cr) and René 125 Ni-based superalloy was conducted by alternated cathodic and anodic polarizations. The pure nickel aluminide dissolved homogeneously. In contrast, the inhomogeneity of dissolution increased with the incorporation of Cr in the coating. The coatings were however uniformly dissolved when the cathodic step was eliminated. XPS and TEM demonstrate that the occurrence of a passive layer containing Cr and Al oxy-hydroxides blocked dissolution.

Abstract: Bony fish represent the most basal vertebrate branch with a dedicated mucosal immune system, which comprises immunologically heterogeneous microenvironments armed with innate and adaptive components. In rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), a nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) was recently described as a diffuse network of myeloid and lymphoid cells located in the olfactory organ of fish. Several studies have demonstrated high levels of protection conferred by nasal vaccines against viral and bacterial pathogens; however, the mechanisms underlying the observed protection are not well understood. We applied 5′RACE and a deep sequencing–based approach to investigate the clonal structure of the systemic and mucosal rainbow trout B cell repertoire. The analysis of Ig repertoire in control trout suggests different structures of IgM and IgT spleen and NALT repertoires, with restricted repertoire diversity in NALT. Nasal and injection vaccination with a bacterial vaccine revealed unique dynamics of IgM and IgT repertoires at systemic and mucosal sites and the remarkable ability of nasal vaccines to induce spleen Ig responses. Our findings provide an important immunological basis for the effectiveness of nasal vaccination in fish and other vertebrate animals and will help the design of future nasal vaccination strategies.

Abstract: Chalcogenide semiconducting nanoparticles are promising building blocks for solution-processed fabrication of optoelectronic devices. In this work, we report a new large-scale colloidal synthesis of metastable CuInSe2 nanoparticles with hexagonal plate-like morphology. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis of the nanoparticles showed that the structure of the nanoparticles is not simple hexagonal wurtzite-type CuInSe2 (space group P63mc), indicating the formation of an ordered superstructure. Detailed insight into this structural aspect was explored by high-resolution electron microscopy, and the results evidence an unreported chemical ordering within the synthesized CuInSe2 nanoparticles. Specifically, while the Se sublattice is arranged in perfect wurtzite subcell, Cu and In are segregated over distinct framework positions, forming domains with lower symmetry. The arrangement of these domains within the hexagonal Se substructure proceeds through the formation of a number of planar defects, mainly twins and antiphase boundaries. As a semiconductor, the synthesized material exhibits a direct optical transition at 0.95 eV, which correlates well with its electronic structure assessed by density functional theory calculations. Abstract: International audience; Controlling the outer surface of nanometric metal–organic frameworks (nanoMOFs) and further understanding the in vivo effect of the coated material are crucial for the convenient biomedical applications of MOFs. However, in most studies, the surface modification protocol is often associated with significant toxicity and/or lack of selectivity. As an alternative, how the highly selective and general grafting GraftFast method leads, through a green and simple process, to the successful attachment of multifunctional biopolymers (polyethylene glycol (PEG) and hyaluronic acid) on the external surface of nanoMOFs is reported. In particular, effectively PEGylated iron trimesate MIL-100(Fe) nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit suitable grafting stability and superior chemical and colloidal stability in different biofluids, while conserving full porosity and allowing the adsorption of bioactive molecules (cosmetic and antitumor agents). Furthermore, the nature of the MOF–PEG interaction is deeply investigated using high-resolution soft X-ray spectroscopy. Finally, a cell penetration study using the radio-labeled antitumor agent gemcitabine monophosphate (3H-GMP)-loaded MIL-100(Fe)@PEG NPs shows reduced macrophage phagocytosis, confirming a significant in vitro PEG furtiveness.

Abstract: International audience; The North Atlantic Current (NAC) transports warm salty water to high northern latitudes, with important repercussions for ocean circulation and global climate. A southward displacement of the NAC and Subarctic Front, which separate subpolar and subtropical water masses, is widely suggested for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and may have acted as a positive feedback in glacial expansion at this time. However, the role of the NAC during the intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation (iNHG) at ~3.5 to 2.5 Ma is less clear. Here we present new records from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1313 (41°N) spanning ~2.8-2.4 Ma to trace the influence of Subarctic Front waters above this mid-latitude site. We reconstruct surface and permanent pycnocline temperatures and seawater δ 18 O using paired Mg/Ca-δ 18 O measurements on the planktic foraminifers Globigerinoides ruber and Globorotalia crassaformis and determine abundances of the subpolar foraminifer Neogloboquadrina atlantica. We find that the first significant glacial incursions of Subarctic Front surface waters above Site U1313 did not occur until ~2.6 Ma. At no time during our study interval was (sub)surface reorganization in the midlatitude North Atlantic analogous to the LGM. Our findings suggest that LGM-like processes sensu stricto cannot be invoked to explain interglacial-glacial cycle amplification during iNHG. They also imply that increased glacial productivity at Site U1313 during iNHG was not only driven by southward deflections of the Subarctic Front. We suggest that nutrient injection from cold-core eddies and enhanced glacial dust delivery may have played additional roles in increasing export productivity in the midlatitude North Atlantic from 2.7 Ma.

Abstract: This paper presents the first results of an ongoing provenance study of some objects aiming to determine which marbles were employed in an area as far apart from the Mediterranean Sea as Roman Gallaecia (in the NW of Spain) from an interdisciplinary perspective. These first results help us to understand the trade routes and other mechanisms of the economy and society that produced or enjoyed these objects. A multimethod analysis (POM, CL and IRMS for C-O isotopic determination) has been applied and compared to our reference collection including well-known Classical as well as most of the Iberian marbles. The results so far show a picture much more complex than anticipated, where the local marble from the area of O Incio (in the south of Lugo province) and other local varieties from the NW region were also exploited and used by the Romans.

Abstract: International audience; Speciation, the evolution of reproductive isolation among populations, is continuous, complex, and involves multiple, interacting barriers. Until it is complete, the effects of this process vary along the genome and can lead to a heterogeneous genomic landscape with peaks and troughs of differentiation and divergence. When gene flow occurs during speciation, barriers restricting gene flow locally in the genome lead to patterns of heterogeneity. However, genomic heterogeneity can also be produced or modified by variation in factors such as background selection and selective sweeps, recombination and mutation rate variation, and heterogeneous gene density. Extracting the effects of gene flow, divergent selection and reproductive isolation from such modifying factors presents a major challenge to speciation genomics. We argue one of the principal aims of the field is to identify the barrier loci involved in limiting gene flow. We first summarize the expected signatures of selection at barrier loci, at the genomic regions linked to them and across the entire genome. We then discuss the modifying factors that complicate the interpretation of the observed genomic landscape. Finally, we end with a road map for future speciation research: a proposal for how to account for these modifying factors and to progress towards understanding the nature of barrier loci. Despite the difficulties of interpreting empirical data, we argue that the availability of promising technical and analytical methods will shed further light on the important roles that gene flow and divergent selection have in shaping the genomic landscape of speciation.

Abstract: In this work, we present direct regression analysis for the transition probabilities in the possibly non-Markov progressive illness-death model. The method is based on binomial regression, where the response is the indicator of the occupancy for the given state along time. Randomly weighted score equations that are able to remove the bias due to censoring are introduced. By solving these equations, one can estimate the possibly time-varying regression coefficients, which have an immediate interpretation as covariate effects on the transition probabilities. The performance of the proposed estimator is investigated through simulations. We apply the method to data from the Registry of Systematic Lupus Erythematosus RELESSER, a multicenter registry created by the Spanish Society of Rheumatology. Abstract: International audience; Detailed analysis of tree canopy interaction with incident radiowaves has mainly been limited to remote sensing for the purpose of forest classification among many other applications. This represents a monostatic configuration, unlike the case of communication links, which are bistatic. In general, link analyses have been limited to the application of simple, empirical formulas based on the use of specific attenuation values in dB/m and the traversed vegetated mass as, e.g., the model in Recommendation ITU-R P.833-8 [1]. In remote sensing, two main techniques are used: Multiple Scattering Theory (MST) [2]-[5] and Radiative Transfer Theory (RT), [5] and [6]. We have paid attention in the past to MST [7]-[10]. It was shown that a full application of MST leads to very long computation times which are unacceptable in the case where we have to analyze a scenario with several trees. Extensive work using MST has been also presented by others in [11]-[16] showing the interest in this technique. We have proposed a simplified model for scattering from tree canopies based on a hybridization of MST and a modified physical optics (PO) approach [16]. We assume that propagation through a canopy is accounted for by using the complex valued propagation constant obtained by MST. Unlike the case when the full MST is applied, the proposed approach offers significant benefits including a direct software implementation and acceptable computation times even for high frequencies and electrically large canopies. The proposed model thus replaces the coherent component in MST, significant in the forward direction, but keeps the incoherent or diffuse scattering component present in all directions. The incoherent component can be calculated within reasonable times. Here, we present tests of the proposed model against MST using an artificial single-tree scenario at 2 GHz and 10 GHz.

Abstract: 7 páginas, 4 figuras.-- Proyecto Carbochange, Uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide in the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean declined rapidly between 1990 and 2006. This reduction in carbon dioxide uptake was related to warming at the sea surface, which—according to model simulations—coincided with a reduction in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. The extent to which the slowdown of this circulation system—which transports warm surface waters to the northern high latitudes, and cool deep waters south—contributed to the reduction in carbon uptake has remained uncertain. Here, we use data on the oceanic transport of volume, heat and carbon dioxide to track carbon dioxide uptake in the subtropical and subpolar regions of the North Atlantic Ocean over the past two decades. We separate anthropogenic carbon from natural carbon by assuming that the latter corresponds to a pre-industrial atmosphere, whereas the remaining is anthropogenic. We find that the uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide—released by human activities—occurred almost exclusively in the subtropical gyre. In contrast, natural carbon dioxide uptake—which results from natural Earth system processes—dominated in the subpolar gyre. We attribute the weakening of contemporary carbon dioxide uptake in the subpolar North Atlantic to a reduction in the natural component. Abstract: International audience; The increasing need for accuracy in GNSS positioning applications requires a thin knowledge of the impact of the urban propagation channel on the receiver’s tracking loops. Therefore, new receivers’ performance assessment requires the study of their behavior in a multipath environment. In that context, propagation channel synthesizers have to be able to provide multipath parameters that are representative of a real environment. Then, the receiver can be put to test by using these multipaths parameters to quantify its resulting positioning error. In order to simulate a realistic environment, the channel synthesizer usually generates a high number of multipaths. This characteristic can prevent an optimal receiver performance evaluation, especially when using a hardware channel emulator, whose multipath production capacity does not normally exceed 10 units per satellite (even if the total number of channels can reach 36 or 72 in the most powerful emulator). Therefore, this study aims at elaborating reduction methods of the channel impulse response and comparing their capacity to preserve the receiver’s positioning error induced by the multipath channel, in order to advocate the use of one of these methods to answer the multipath channel reduction problem.

First, multipath aggregation methods are compared to parametric methods through channel delay and Doppler characteristics preservation criteria. Then, the impact of these criteria on the GNSS receiver's positioning computation is quantified, in order to formalize the link between pseudo-range error preservation and impulse response preservation.

Abstract: International audience; In recent years, expanded porphyrins have emerged as a promising class of π-conjugated molecules that display unique electronic, optical and conformational properties. Several expanded porphyrins can switch between planar and twisted conformations, which have different photophysical properties. Such a change of topology involves a Hückel–Möbius aromaticity switch in a single molecule and it can be induced by solvent, pH and metallation. These features make expanded porphyrins suitable for the development of a novel type of molecular switches for molecular electronic devices. Octaphyrins consisting of eight pyrrole rings, exhibit twisted-Hückel, Möbius and Hückel π-conjugation topologies depending on the oxidation and protonation state, with distinct electronic structures and aromaticity. Our working hypothesis is that a significant change in the conductance of expanded porphyrins will be observed after the topology switching. Despite the potential of Hückel–Möbius systems as conductance switches, the relationship between the conductance and the molecular topology is not yet understood. We have explored the performance of local descriptors of conductivity in simple molecules, as well as the relationship with conductance. Since these indexes provide a qualitative measure of delocalization and conductance in the probe molecules, we have carried out a local analysis of electrical conductance changes as a function of the π-conjugation in two examples. In one of them, the locality of the electronic changes ensures the ability of these indexes to describe the conductance as local. Moreover, it enables to identify which conformational switch would be more efficient from an electronic device perspective. However, we also show that it is not always possible to reduce conductance changes to one bond, and in those molecules where a deep rearrangement occurs far from the structural perturbation, local measures show a limited efficiency. This is a first step for the description of the connection between the molecular structure and conductance in molecular switches.

Abstract: De grandes avancées ont été réalisées récemment concernant l’emploi des marbres et des autres roches ornementales dans l’Espagne romaine. Cependant, certains territoires de la péninsule Ibérique ne font l’objet que de rares études de provenance. Ceci était le cas du nord-ouest (actuelle Galice), où aucun travail n’avait été mené jusqu'à présent. Dans le cadre d'une étude interdisciplinaire, un nombre important d'objets ne correspondait pas aux principaux marbres classiques, mais semblaient avoir été mis en œuvre à partir d’un matériau local connu sous le nom de marbre d’O Incio qui n'avait jamais fait l'objet d’une caractérisation archéométrique. C'est ainsi que les carrières avoisinant le petit village d’O Incio ont été localisées et échantillonnées. Une approche multi-méthode combinant analyse pétrographique, cathodoluminescence, diffraction de rayons X, analyse des isotopes stables de C et O et spectrophotométrie a été menée afin de caractériser les différentes variétés de marbre. Cela constitue la première étape fondamentale pour les différencier d'autres marbres ibériques et étrangers macroscopiquement similaires. In spite of the great leap forward experienced in our understanding of the use of marble and other ornamental stones in Roman Spain, provenance studies are still quite uncommon in some territories of the Iberian Peninsula. This was the case of the northwesternmost part (modern Galicia), where no significant work had been done until now. Within the framework of an interdisciplinary study, a significant number of objects studied did not match with the main well-known Classical marbles but seemed to have been produced with a local stone known as O Incio marble, which had never been yet archaeometrically analysed. Therefore, the quarries near the small village of O Incio were located and sampled, and a multi-method approach combining polarized-light microscopy, cathodoluminescence, X-ray powder diffraction and stable C and O isotope analysis as well as spectrophotometry was applied to characterize the different outcropping marble varieties as the first and basic step to correctly differentiate them from other Iberian and foreign marbles with similar macroscopic features.
