Abstract

We explore the consequences of limiting executive pay on voluntary executive turnover by exploiting a Chinese government policy restricting executive pay at a subset of firms. Affected firms experience an increase in voluntary executive turnover, with executives increasingly moving to firms not bound by the pay policy. Executives that leave are of higher quality as suggested by their stronger stock and accounting performance in the year prior to the turnover. Affected firms suffer firm value losses, especially when talented executives leave. Our findings demonstrate the importance of compensation contracts in retaining executives and suggest a need for regulatory caution, since mandated constraints aimed at trying to "fix" executive pay can hurt firm value and ultimately, hurt shareholders. Historically, U.S. underserved college students have lower college retention and completion rates. One explanation is a perceived gap between the student experience and college settings. Two main approaches used to address that gap are: colleges created programs to help students adapt to settings, and colleges have made changes in their settings to better serve and support the students. In both cases, colleges served as the agencies defining, designing, and guiding the change. While both approaches contribute to improved completion, a third approach may add another solution, student-initiated retention programming (SIRP). SIRPs are student organized, operated, and sustained efforts to persistence to graduation. Through a SIRP, underserved students can use cultural experiences to frame and deliver retention efforts. Drawing on a case study of Tigers First, a University of Memphis SIRP, this article will identify and describe the conditions and processes leading to the creation of a productive underserved student SIRP. At the University of Memphis, a team of librarians and library staff formed the Research Guides Redesign Team (RGRT) to redesign, organize, and evaluate the University Libraries' (UL) research guides. The purpose of the project was to ensure that the new design of the research guides homepage was intuitive to use. While it is impossible to ensure absolute usability for every user, this usability study attempts to eradicate the most common interface issues in community experiences at the University of Memphis. The RGRT conducted usability testing to evaluate the effectiveness of the new standardized format, grouped headings, and the appearance of the interface. The RGRT worked within the limitations of Springshare's software to create the design and then chose five users to complete various task scenarios. Upon analysis of the users' ability to complete the tasks, the RGRT discovered that overall, the design was effective, but they did make a few minor changes. Playing unfamiliar music at parties may help people be more sociable, according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Memphis and Indiana University. The study involved 31 participants listening to an audiobook while background music played. The participants were able to focus better on the audiobook when the background music was unfamiliar to them.
