Abstract: International audience; Lead halide perovskites have some unique properties which are very promising for optoelectronic applications such as solar cells, LEDs and lasers. One important and expected application of perovskite halide semiconductors is solar cell operation including hot carriers. This advanced solar cell concept allows overcoming the Shockley–Queisser efficiency limit, thereby achieving energy conversion efficiency as high as 66% by extracting hot carriers. Understanding ultrafast photoexcited carrier dynamics and extraction in lead halide perovskites is crucial for these applications. Here, we clarify the hot carrier cooling and transfer dynamics in all-inorganic cesium lead iodide (CsPbI3) perovskite using transient absorption spectroscopy and Al2O3, poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) and TiO2 as selective contacts. We find that slow hot carrier cooling occurs on a timescale longer than 10 ps in the cases of CsPbI3/Al2O3 and CsPbI3/ TiO2, which is attributed to hot phonon bottleneck for the high photoexcited carrier density. An efficient ultrafast hole transfer from CsPbI3 to the P3HT hole extracting layer is observed. These results suggest that hot holes can be extracted by appropriate selective contacts before energy dissipation into the halide perovskite lattice and that CsPbI3 has a potential for hot carrier solar cell applications.

Abstract: International audience; Suguru is a paper and pencil puzzle invented by Naoki Inaba. The goal of the game is to fill a grid with numbers between 1 and 5 while respecting three simple constraints. We first prove the NP-completeness of Suguru puzzle. For this we design gadgets to encode the PLANAR-CIRCUIT-SAT in a Suguru grid. We then design a physical Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) protocol for Suguru. This ZKP protocol allows a prover to prove that he knows a solution of a Suguru grid to a verifier without leaking any information on the solution. To construct such a physical ZKP protocol, we only rely on a few physical cards and adapted encoding. For a Suguru grid with n cells, we only use 5n + 5 cards. Moreover, we prove the three classical security properties of a ZKP: completeness, extractability, and zero-knowledge.

Abstract: During the last years, several card-based Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) protocols for Nikoli’s puzzles have been designed. Although there are relatively simple card-based ZKP protocols for a number of puzzles, such as Sudoku and Kakuro, some puzzles face difficulties in designing simple protocols. For example, Slitherlink requires novel and elaborate techniques to construct a protocol. In this study, we focus on three Nikoli puzzles: Nurikabe, Hitori, and Heyawake. To date, no card-based ZKP protocol for these puzzles has been developed, partially because they have a relatively tricky rule that colored cells should form a connected area (namely a polyomino); this rule, sometimes referred to as “Bundan-kin” (in Japanese), complicates the puzzles, as well as facilitating difficulties in designing card-based ZKP protocols. We address this challenging task and propose a method for verifying the connectivity of hidden colored cells in a ZKP manner, such that we construct card-based ZKP protocols for the three puzzles.

Abstract: Turing’s reaction–diffusion theory of morphogenesis has been very successful for understanding macroscopic patterns within complex objects ranging from biological systems to sand dunes. However, Turing patterns on microscopic length scales are extremely rare. Here we show that a strained atomic bismuth monolayer assembled on the surface of NbSe2—and subject to interatomic interactions and kinetics—displays Turing patterns. Our reaction–diffusion model produces stripe patterns with a period of five atoms (approximately 2 nm) and domain walls with Y-shaped junctions that bear a striking resemblance to what has been experimentally observed. Our work establishes that Turing patterns can occur at the atomic scale in a hard condensed-matter setting. Macroscale patterns seen in biological systems such as animal coats or skin can be described by Turing’s reaction–diffusion theory. Now Turing patterns are shown to also exist in bismuth monolayers, an exemplary nanoscale atomic system.

Abstract: The most recent eruption of Mount Fuji (Japan), the VEI 5 Hoei plinian eruption (CE 1707) heavily impacted Lake Yamanaka, a shallow lake located at the foot of Mount Fuji. Here we discuss the influence of the Hoei eruption on the lacustrine sedimentation of Lake Yamanaka using high-resolution geophysical and geochemical measurements on gravity cores. Hoei scoria fallout had two major impacts on Lake Yamanaka: (i) reduction of the sedimentation rate (from similar to 0.16 to similar to 0.09 cm/year) and (ii) the increase of in situ lake productivity. Sedimentation rates after the eruption were relatively low due to the thick scoria layer, trapping underlying sediments in the catchment. The lacustrine system took more than similar to 170 years to begin to recover from the Hoei eruption: most recently sedimentation recovery has been accelerated by changes in land use. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, vegetated strips delimited cultivated parcels, trapping sediment and minimizing anthropogenic impacts on the sedimentation rate. Over the last decade, the decline of agriculture and the increase of other human activities has led to an increase in the sedimentation rate (similar to 1 cm/year). This study highlights the effect of the grainsize of the volcanic ejecta on the sedimentation rate following a volcanic eruption. Coarse-grained tephra are difficult to erode. Therefore, their erosion and remobilization is largely limited to intense typhoons when porous scoria deposits are saturated by heavy rains. Moreover, this study suggests that recent anthropogenic modifications of the catchment had a greater impact on the sedimentation rate than the Hoei eruption.

Abstract: International audience; The Oritatami model was introduced by Geary et al (2016) to study the computational potential of RNA cotranscriptional folding as first shown in wet-lab experiments by Geary et al (Science 2014). In Oritatami model, a molecule grows component by component (named beads) into the triangular grid and folds as it grows. More precisely, the δ last nascent beads are free to move and adopt the positions that maximizes the number of bonds with the current folded structure. Geary et al (2018) proved that the Oritatami model is capable of efficient Turing universal computation using a complicated construction that simulates Turing machines via tag systems. We propose here a simple Oritatami system which intrinsically simulates arbitrary 1D cellular automata. Being intrinsic, our simulation emulates the behavior of cellular automata in a readable way and in time linear in space and time of the simulated automaton. Oritatami model has proven to be a fruitful framework to study molecular reconfigurability. Our construction relies on the development of new mecanisms which are simple enough that we believe that some simplification of them may be implemented in the wet lab. An implementation of our construction can be downloaded for testing.

Abstract: Quantum gravity is the solution ascribed to rendering the geometric description of classical gravity, in any dimensions, completely consistent with principles of quantum theory. The serendipitous theoretical discovery that black holes are thermodynamical objects that must participate in the second law has led to these purely gravitational objects to be dubbed, `the hydrogen atom for quantum gravity', analogous to the atomic spectrum of hydrogen, effectively used by Neils Bohr and his contemporaries to successfully formulate quantum mechanics in the early 20th century. Here, we employ the temperature and entropy formulae describing Schwarzschild black holes to consider the emergence of Einstein Field Equations from a complex-Hermitian structure, [Ricci tensor $\pm \sqrt{-1}$ Yang-Mills field strength], where the gravitational degrees of freedom are the SU($N$) colors with $N \in \mathbb{Z} \geq 0$ and a condensate comprising color pairs, $k = N/2$, appropriately coupled to the Yang-Mills gauge field. The foundations of our approach reveal the complex-Hermitian structure is analogous to Cayley-Dickson algebras, which aids in formulating the appropriate action principle for our formalism. The SU($N$) gauge group is broken into an effective SU($4$) $\rightarrow$ SO($4$) $\leftrightarrow$ SO($1,3$) field theory on the tangent space with two terms: the Einstein-Hilbert action and a Gauss-Bonnet topological term. Moreover, since topologically classifying all $n = 4$ (dimensional) Riemannian manifolds is not a clear-cut endeavor, we only consider the Euclidean path integral as the sum over manifolds with distinct topologies, $h \in \mathbb{Z} \geq 0$ homeomorphic to connected sums of an arbitrary number of $n = 4$-spheres and $h$ number of $n = 4$-tori. Consequently, the partition function adopts a reminiscent form of the sum of the vacuum Feynman diagrams for a large $\mathcal{N} = \exp(\beta M/2)$ theory, provided $\mathcal{S} = \beta M/2 = \pi N$ is the Schwarzschild black hole entropy, $\beta = 8\pi GM$ is the inverse temperature, $G$ is gravitational constant, $M$ is the black hole mass and horizon area, $\mathcal{A} = 2G\beta M = 4\pi GN$ is pixelated in units of $4\pi G$. This leads us to conclude that the partition function for quantum gravity is equivalent to the vacuum Feynman diagrams of a yet unidentified large $\mathcal{N}$ theory in $n = 4$ dimensions. Our approach also sheds new light on the asymptotic behavior of dark matter-dominated galaxy rotation curves (the empirical baryonic Tully-Fisher relation) and emergent gravity in condensed matter systems with defects such as layered materials with cationic vacancies as topological defects.

Abstract: A magnetic field parallel to an electrical current does not produce a Lorentz force on the charge carriers. Therefore, orbital longitudinal magnetoresistance is unexpected. Here we report on the observation of a large and non saturating magnetoresistance in lightly doped SrTiO$_{3-x}$ independent of the relative orientation of current and magnetic field. We show that this quasi-isotropic magnetoresistance can be explained if the carrier mobility along all orientations smoothly decreases with magnetic field. This anomalous regime is restricted to low concentrations when the dipolar correlation length is longer than the distance between carriers. We identify cyclotron motion of electrons in a potential landscape tailored by polar domains as the cradle of quasi-isotropic orbital magnetoresistance. Abstract: International audience; Context. The spectral energy distribution (SED) in the millimetre to centimetre range is an extremely useful tool for characterising the dust in protostellar envelopes as well as free-free emission from the protostar and outflow. Actually, the evolutionary status of solar-type protostars is often based on their SED in the near-infrared to millimetre range. In addition, the presence or absence of free-free emission can be considered an indicator of the source evolutionary stage (Class 0/I versus Class II/III). While many studies have been carried out towards low- and high-mass protostars, little exists so far about solar-type protostars in high-mass star-forming regions, which are likely to be representatives of the conditions where the Solar System was born.Aims. In this work, we focus on the embedded solar-type protostars in the Orion Molecular Cloud (OMC) 2 and 3 filaments, which are bounded by nearby HII regions and which are, therefore, potentially affected by the high-UV illumination of the nearby OB stars. We use various dust parameters to understand whether the small-scale structure (≤1000 au) and the evolutionary status of these solar-type protostars are affected by the nearby HII regions, as is the case for the large-scale (≤104 au) gas chemical composition.Methods. We used the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA) in the 1.3 mm band (246.2 GHz) to image the continuum of 16 young (Class 0/I) OMC-2/3 solar-type protostars, with an angular resolution of 0.25″ (100 au). We completed our data with archival data from the ALMA and VLA VANDAM survey of Orion Protostars at 333 and 32.9 GHz, respectively, to construct the dust SED and extract the dust temperature, the dust emissivity spectral index, the envelope plus disk mass of the sources and to assess whether free-free emission is contaminating their dust SED in the centimetre range.Results. From the millimetre to centimetre range dust SED, we found low dust emissivity spectral indexes (β < 1) for the majority of our source sample and free-free emission towards only 5 of the 16 sample sources. We were also able to confirm or correct the evolutionary status of the source sample reported in the literature. Finally, we did not find any dependence of the source dust parameters on their location in the OMC-2/3 filament.Conclusions. Our results show that the small-scale dust properties of the embedded OMC-2/3 protostars are not affected by the high-UV illumination from the nearby HII regions and that the formation of protostars likely takes place simultaneously throughout the filament.

Abstract: We study the complexity of the problems of finding, given a graph $G$, a largest induced subgraph of $G$ with all degrees odd (called an odd subgraph), and the smallest number of odd subgraphs that partition $V(G)$. We call these parameters ${\sf mos}(G)$ and $\chi_{{\sf odd}}(G)$, respectively. We prove that deciding whether $\chi_{{\sf odd}}(G) \leq q$ is polynomial-time solvable if $q \leq 2$, and NP-complete otherwise. We provide algorithms in time $2^{O({\sf rw})} \cdot n^{O(1)}$ and $2^{O(q \cdot {\sf rw})} \cdot n^{O(1)}$ to compute ${\sf mos}(G)$ and to decide whether $\chi_{{\sf odd}}(G) \leq q$ on $n$-vertex graphs of rank-width at most ${\sf rw}$, respectively, and we prove that the dependency on rank-width is asymptotically optimal under the ETH. Abstract: International audience; Since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011, we have been working on how possibly IT could be used for disaster response and recovery in Japan. From this perspective, we implemented a system, Recovery Watcher, which was designed for sharing information on the recovery process with people inside as well as outside the disaster area. We also applied the system for barrier-free support in a university environment. This paper discusses the further possibilities to use the system for the first responders at disaster as well as inclusive support. We look into the original definition of situation awareness as well as trust issues. Finally, we present our plan to use the system in an island for elderly care as well as tourism in future.

Abstract: We consider a differentially rotating flow of an incompressible electrically conducting and viscous fluid subject to an external axial magnetic field and to an azimuthal magnetic field that is allowed to be generated by a combination of an axial electric current external to the fluid and electrical currents in the fluid itself. In this setting we derive an extended version of the celebrated Hain-Lüst differential equation for the radial Lagrangian displacement that incorporates the effects of the axial and azimuthal magnetic fields, differential rotation, viscosity, and electrical resistivity. We apply the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin method to the extended Hain-Lüst equation and derive a comprehensive dispersion relation for the local stability analysis of the flow to three-dimensional disturbances. We confirm that in the limit of low magnetic Prandtl numbers, in which the ratio of the viscosity to the magnetic diffusivity is vanishing, the rotating flows with radial distributions of the angular velocity beyond the Liu limit, become unstable subject to a wide variety of the azimuthal magnetic fields, and so is the Keplerian flow. In the analysis of the dispersion relation we find evidence of a new long-wavelength instability which is caught also by the numerical solution of the boundary value problem for a magnetized Taylor-Couette flow.

Abstract: International audience; Cadherins constitute a family of transmembrane proteins that mediate calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion. The extracellular domain of cadherins consists of extracellular cadherin (EC) domains, separated by calcium binding sites. The EC interacts with other cadherin molecules in cis and in trans to mechanically hold apposing cell surfaces together. CDH2 encodes N-cadherin, whose essential roles in neural development include neuronal migration and axon pathfinding. However, CDH2 has not yet been linked to a Mendelian neurodevelopmental disorder. Here, we report de novo heterozygous pathogenic variants (seven missense, two frameshift) in CDH2 in nine individuals with a syndromic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by global developmental delay and/or intellectual disability, variable axon pathfinding defects (corpus callosum agenesis or hypoplasia, mirror movements, Duane anomaly), and ocular, cardiac, and genital anomalies. All seven missense variants (c.1057G>A [p.Asp353Asn]; c.1789G>A [p.Asp597Asn]; c.1789G>T [p.Asp597Tyr]; c.1802A>C [p.Asn601Thr]; c.1839C>G [p.Cys613Trp]; c.1880A>G [p.Asp627Gly]; c.2027A>G [p.Tyr676Cys]) result in substitution of highly conserved residues, and six of seven cluster within EC domains 4 and 5. Four of the substitutions affect the calcium-binding site in the EC4-EC5 interdomain. We show that cells expressing these variants in the EC4-EC5 domains have a defect in cell-cell adhesion; this defect includes impaired binding in trans with N-cadherin-WT expressed on apposing cells. The two frameshift variants (c.2563_2564delCT [p.Leu855Valfs∗4]; c.2564_2567dupTGTT [p.Leu856Phefs∗5]) are predicted to lead to a truncated cytoplasmic domain. Our study demonstrates that de novo heterozygous variants in CDH2 impair the adhesive activity of N-cadherin, resulting in a multisystemic developmental disorder, that could be named ACOG syndrome (agenesis of corpus callosum, axon pathfinding, cardiac, ocular, and genital defects).

Abstract: We have observed the Class I protostellar source Elias 29 with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We have detected CS, SO, $^{34}$SO, SO$_2$, and SiO line emissions in a compact component concentrated near the protostar and a ridge component separated from the protostar by 4\arcsec\ ($\sim 500$ au). The former component is found to be abundant in SO and SO$_2$ but deficient in CS. The abundance ratio SO/CS is as high as $3^{+13}_{-2} \times 10^2$ at the protostar, which is even higher than that in the outflow-shocked region of L1157 B1. However, organic molecules (HCOOCH$_3$, CH$_3$OCH$_3$, CCH, and c-C$_3$H$_2$) are deficient in Elias 29. We attribute the deficiency in organic molecules and richness in SO and SO$_2$ to the evolved nature of the source or the relatively high dust temperature (\protect\raisebox{-0.7ex}{$\:\stackrel{\textstyle >}{\sim}\:$} 20 K) in the parent cloud of Elias 29. The SO and SO$_2$ emissions trace rotation around the protostar. Assuming a highly inclined configuration ($i \geq 65$\degr; 0\degr\ for a face-on configuration) and Keplerian motion for simplicity, the protostellar mass is estimated to be (0.8 -- 1.0) \Msun. The $^{34}$SO and SO$_2$ emissions are asymmetric in their spectra; the blue-shifted components are weaker than the red-shifted ones. Although this may be attributed to the asymmetric molecular distribution, other possibilities are also discussed.

Abstract: The papers in this special section examine the technology of wearable and hand-held haptic devices. These papers reflect several key directions in current research in this area. Researchers and engineers are devising new ways to better overcome the intrinsic limitations of these types of haptic interfaces, exploiting a renewed understanding of the perceptual basis of haptics and an improvement in the available design and manufacturing techniques. We expect knowledge in this area to continue to grow, thanks to the fertile interactions between activities in mechatronics, ergonomics, robotics, and haptics, as well as for the need for wearable and hand-held haptics driven by fast-growing applications such as gaming, rehabilitation, training, and medicine.

Abstract: In this paper we study the problem of finding a small safe set S in a graph G, i.e. a non-empty set of vertices such that no connected component of G[S] is adjacent to a larger component in $G - S$. We enhance our understanding of the problem from the viewpoint of parameterized complexity by showing that (1) the problem is W[2]-hard when parameterized by the pathwidth $\mathsf {pw}$ and cannot be solved in time $n^{o(\mathsf {pw})}$ unless the ETH is false, (2) it admits no polynomial kernel parameterized by the vertex cover number $\mathsf {vc}$ unless $\mathrm {PH} = \varSigma ^{\mathrm {p}}_{3}$, but (3) it is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) when parameterized by the neighborhood diversity $\mathsf {nd}$, and (4) it can be solved in time $n^{f(\mathsf {cw})}$ for some double exponential function f where $\mathsf {cw}$ is the clique-width. We also present (5) a faster FPT algorithm when parameterized by solution size.

Abstract: We introduce and study the computational power of Oritatami, a theoretical model that explores greedy molecular folding, whereby a molecular strand begins to fold before its production is complete. This model is inspired by our recent experimental work demonstrating the construction of shapes at the nanoscale from RNA, where strands of RNA fold into programmable shapes during their transcription from an engineered sequence of synthetic DNA. In the model of Oritatami, we explore the process of folding a single-strand bit by bit in such a way that the final fold emerges as a space-time diagram of computation. One major requirement in order to compute within this model is the ability to program a single sequence to fold into different shapes dependent on the state of the surrounding inputs. Another challenge is to embed all of the computing components within a contiguous strand, and in such a way that different fold patterns of the same strand perform different functions of computation. Here, we introduce general design techniques to solve these challenges in the Oritatami model. Our main result in this direction is the demonstration of a periodic Oritatami system that folds upon itself algorithmically into a prescribed set of shapes, depending on its current local environment, and whose final folding displays the sequence of binary integers from 0 to N = 2 k − 1 with a seed of size O ( k ) . We prove that designing Oritatami is NP-hard in the number of possible local environments for the folding. Nevertheless, we provide an efficient algorithm, linear in the length of the sequence, that solves the Oritatami design problem when the number of local environments is a small fixed constant. This shows that this problem is in fact fixed parameter tractable (FPT) and can thus be solved in practice efficiently. We hope that the numerous structural strategies employed in Oritatami enabling computation will inspire new architectures for computing in RNA that take advantage of the rapid kinetic-folding of RNA.

Abstract: Independent Set Reconfiguration is one of the most well-studied problems in the setting of combinatorial reconfiguration. It is known that the problem is PSPACE-complete even for graphs of bounded bandwidth. This fact rules out the tractability of parameterizations by most well-studied structural parameters as most of them generalize bandwidth. In this paper, we study the parameterization by modular-width, which is not comparable with bandwidth. We show that the problem parameterized by modular-width is fixed-parameter tractable under all previously studied rules TAR, TJ, and TS. Abstract: International audience; We study the oritatami model for molecular co-transcriptional folding. In oritatami systems, the transcript (the “molecule”) folds as it is synthesized (transcribed), according to a local energy optimisation process, which is similar to how actual biomolecules such as RNA fold into complex shapes and functions as they are transcribed. We prove that there is an oritatami system embedding universal computation in the folding process itself.Our result relies on the development of a generic toolbox, which is easily reusable for future work to design complex functions in oritatami systems. We develop “low-level” tools that allow to easily spread apart the encoding of different “functions” in the transcript, even if they are required to be applied at the same geometrical location in the folding. We build upon these low-level tools, a programming framework with increasing levels of abstraction, from encoding of instructions into the transcript to logical analysis. This framework is similar to the hardware-to- algorithm levels of abstractions in standard algorithm theory. These various levels of abstractions allow to separate the proof of correctness of the global behavior of our system, from the proof of correctness of its implementation. Thanks to this framework, we were able to computerise the proof of correctness of its implementation and produce certificates, in the form of a relatively small number of proof trees, compact and easily readable/checkable by human, while encapsulating huge case enumerations. We believe this particular type of certificates can be generalised to other discrete dynamical systems, where proofs involve large case enumerations as well.

Abstract: An oritatami system (OS) is a theoretical model of self-assembly via co-transcriptional folding. It consists of a growing chain of beads which can form bonds with each other as they are transcribed. During the transcription process, the $\delta$ most recently produced beads dynamically fold so as to maximize the number of bonds formed, self-assemblying into a shape incrementally. The parameter $\delta$ is called the delay and is related to the transcription rate in nature. This article initiates the study of shape self-assembly using oritatami. A shape is a connected set of points in the triangular lattice. We first show that oritatami systems differ fundamentally from tile-assembly systems by exhibiting a family of infinite shapes that can be tile-assembled but cannot be folded by any OS. As it is NP-hard in general to determine whether there is an OS that folds into (self-assembles) a given finite shape, we explore the folding of upscaled versions of finite shapes. We show that any shape can be folded from a constant size seed, at any scale n >= 3, by an OS with delay 1. We also show that any shape can be folded at the smaller scale 2 by an OS with unbounded delay. This leads us to investigate the influence of delay and to prove that, for all {\delta} > 2, there are shapes that can be folded (at scale 1) with delay {\delta} but not with delay {\delta}'

Abstract: DC electric field in the ionosphere above seismically active regions can be formed in a process of external current insertion into the atmosphere-ionosphere electric circuit. This current arises as a result of convective upward transport of charged aerosols and their gravitational sedimentation. Aerosols are injected into the atmosphere by soil gases intensified in the zones of active faults. In general case the horizontal distribution of injected aerosols in such zones is asymmetric. In this report we propose the method for computation of DC electric field generated in the ionosphere and the atmosphere by external electric current with arbitrary spatial distribution. Oblique magnetic field and the conjugate ionosphere effects are taken into consideration.

Abstract: Signals of two Japanese transmitters (22.2 kHz and 40 kHz) recorded on the ground VLF/LF station in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and on board the DEMETER French satellite have been analyzed during a seismic activity in Japan in May–June 2008. The period of analysis was from 18 April to 27 June. During this time two rather large earthquakes occurred in the north part of Honshu Island – 7 May (M=6.8) and 13 June (M=6.9). The ground and satellite data were processed by a method based on the difference between the real signal in nighttime and the model one. For ground observations a clear decrease in both signals has been found several days before the first earthquake. For the second earthquake anomalies were detected only in JJI signal. The epicenters of earthquakes were in reliable reception zone of 40 kHz signal on board the DEMETER. Signal enhancement above the seismic active region and significant signal intensity depletion in the magnetically conjugate area has been found for satellite observation before the first earthquake. Anomalies in satellite data coincide in time with those in the ground-based observation.

Abstract: International audience; Since the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995 as well as the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, we have been aware of the needs for information processing for disaster response and recovery in Japan. This area of research has been led by researchers in the United States of America and Europe in terms of information processing for emergency management to a great extent. While we have had many natural disasters in Japan, only a few of the researchers in information processing have been working on this issue. From this perspective, we try to use our IT knowledge to implement systems to be used in disaster response and recovery so that we could see what could be usable. Moreover, we explored the needs and seeds for disaster information processing in Iwate, Japan. We interviewed local government officials, doctors and university administrators and found the needs for situation awareness for rescue. In this paper, we introduce our work on recovery watcher, designed primarily for reporting how recovery goes from disaster area, and its use for situation awareness in emergency response. Moreover, we show that those systems are usable for a support of barrier-free as well in terms of information provision.

Abstract: In the animal kingdom, many mammals are using their tails to assure their stability while running, jumping, falling, etc. Researches have been performed in order to add tails on wheeled or legged robots in order to improve their stability. However, those tails are often far from the biological structure and resumed to a simple rigid tube with a mass on the extremity. On the other hand the biological tail is composed of many bones moving one on the other and actuated with an important number of muscles. Therefore replicating this structure would result in big and heavy systems using many actuators that would reduce the physical performances of the robot. In this paper, we developed a new bio-inspired cable-driven tail system capable of swinging a flexible tail from base to tip around the pitching axis using a single actuator. First we designed a new flexible tail mimicking the structure of the animal tail. Then we developed a new actuation system using the combination of cams and drive wheels to realize the actuation of 8 cables using a single actuator. Finally, we measured the efforts generated by the swinging motion of the tail and perform experiments to observe its effects on the jumping motion.

Abstract: International audience; Arsenic (As), a toxic element is a concern for the habitants in and around the coastal areas of West Bengal (India) where world's largest Sundarbans mangrove is situated. Little is known about the potential of these mangroves in storing As within their biomass and transporting to the Bay of Bengal. A comprehensive yearly data of above ground and below ground biomass (AGB, BGB), and exchange fluxes like litter fall, plant uptake, sedimentary diffusion/advection, and suspended particle deposition were used in a box model for constructing As budget for the Sundarbans mangroves. About 80% of total As was stored in AGB while As stock in sediment was several hundred times higher than in the AGB and BGB indicating poor bioaccumulation and sequestration capacity of the mangroves, which was further supported by higher As loss though litterfall (16.8 mu g As m(-2) month(-1)) compared to gain through plant uptake (0.05 mu g As m(-2) month(-)(1)). About 65% of the river-discharged As exported to the Bay of Bengal, the rest amounting to 67.2 x 10(3) kg yr(-1) remained in the mangrove estuaries. Although ecotoxicological indexes confirmed low As pollution impact in the Sundarbans, mass budget revealed net As addition in the estuarine ecosystem (67.2 Mg As yr(-1)), mainly derived from natural and anthropogenic sources such as, contamination via atmospheric dust deposition. Overall reservoir-based mass budget showed weak As sequestration capacity by these mangroves. The approach developed for As in this study could be applied to other major metals to estimate metal sequestration and conservation potential by the Sundarbans mangroves.

Abstract: Large unsaturated magnetoresistance has been recently reported in numerous semi-metals. Many of them have a topologically non-trivial band dispersion, such as Weyl nodes or lines. Here, we show that elemental antimony displays the largest high-field magnetoresistance among all known semi-metals. We present a detailed study of the angle-dependent magnetoresistance and use a semi-classical framework invoking an anisotropic mobility tensor to fit the data. A slight deviation from perfect compensation and a modest variation with magnetic field of the components of the mobility tensor are required to attain perfect fits at arbitrary strength and orientation of magnetic field in the entire temperature window of study. Our results demonstrate that large orbital magnetoresistance is an unavoidable consequence of low carrier concentration and the sub-quadratic magnetoresistance seen in many semi-metals can be attributed to field-dependent mobility, expected whenever the disorder length-scale exceeds the Fermi wavelength., Supplementary material on request

Abstract: In our previous papers we have shown that the fractal (monofractal) dimension (Do) showed a significant increase before the Guam earthquake occurred on 8 August, 1993. In order to have a further support to this precursory effect to the general rupture (earthquake) we have carried out the corresponding multifractal analysis (by means of detrended fluctuation analysis) for the same data to study the statistical self-similar properties in a wide range of scales. We have analyzed the ULF geomagnetic data (the most intense H component) observed at Guam observatory. As the result, we have found that we could observe significant changes in the multifractal parameters at Guam such that αmin showed a meaningful decrease about 25 days before the earthquake and correspondingly Δα increased because αmax exhibited no significant change at all. The most sensitive parameter seems to be non-uniformity factor Δ. Correspondingly, the generalized multifractal dimension Dq (q>1) showed a significant decrease (whereas Dq (qD0 (=Dq (q=0) (as already found in our previous papers) is reconfirmed to increase before the earthquake. These multifractal characteristics seem to be a further support that these changes are closely associated with the earthquake as a precursor to the Guam earthquake, providing us with appreciable information on the pre-rupture evolution of the earthquake.

Abstract: In Defective Coloring we are given a graph $G = (V, E)$ and two integers $\chi_d, \Delta^*$ and are asked if we can partition $V$ into $\chi_d$ color classes, so that each class induces a graph of maximum degree $\Delta^*$. We investigate the complexity of this generalization of Coloring with respect to several well-studied graph parameters, and show that the problem is W-hard parameterized by treewidth, pathwidth, tree-depth, or feedback vertex set, if $\chi_d = 2$. As expected, this hardness can be extended to larger values of $\chi_d$ for most of these parameters, with one surprising exception: we show that the problem is FPT parameterized by feedback vertex set for any $\chi_d \ge 2$, and hence 2-coloring is the only hard case for this parameter. In addition to the above, we give an ETH-based lower bound for treewidth and pathwidth, showing that no algorithm can solve the problem in $n^{o(pw)}$, essentially matching the complexity of an algorithm obtained with standard techniques. We complement these results by considering the problem's approximability and show that, with respect to $\Delta^*$, the problem admits an algorithm which for any $\epsilon > 0$ runs in time $(tw/\epsilon)^{O(tw)}$ and returns a solution with exactly the desired number of colors that approximates the optimal $\Delta^*$ within $(1 + \epsilon)$. We also give a $(tw)^{O(tw)}$ algorithm which achieves the desired $\Delta^*$ exactly while 2-approximating the minimum value of $\chi_d$. We show that this is close to optimal, by establishing that no FPT algorithm can (under standard assumptions) achieve a better than $3/2$-approximation to $\chi_d$, even when an extra constant additive error is also allowed., Comment: Accepted to STACS 2018

Abstract: Fixed-Flood-It and Free-Flood-It are combinatorial problems on graphs that generalize a very popular puzzle called Flood-It. Both problems consist of recoloring moves whose goal is to produce a monochromatic ("flooded") graph as quickly as possible. Their difference is that in Free-Flood-It the player has the additional freedom of choosing the vertex to play in each move. In this paper, we investigate how this freedom affects the complexity of the problem. It turns out that the freedom is bad in some sense. We show that some cases trivially solvable for Fixed-Flood-It become intractable for Free-Flood-It. We also show that some tractable cases for Fixed-Flood-It are still tractable for Free-Flood-It but need considerably more involved arguments. We finally present some combinatorial properties connecting or separating the two problems. In particular, we show that the length of an optimal solution for Fixed-Flood-It is always at most twice that of Free-Flood-It, and this is tight., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, FUN 2018

Abstract: Towards the pre-stellar core L1544, the methanol (CH$_3$OH) emission forms an asymmetric ring around the core centre, where CH$_3$OH is mostly in solid form, with a clear peak 4000~au to the north-east of the dust continuum peak. As part of the NOEMA Large Project SOLIS (Seeds of Life in Space), the CH$_3$OH peak has been spatially resolved to study its kinematics and physical structure and to investigate the cause behind the local enhancement. We find that methanol emission is distributed in a ridge parallel to the main axis of the dense core. The centroid velocity increases by about 0.2~km~s$^{-1}$ and the velocity dispersion increases from subsonic to transonic towards the central zone of the core, where the velocity field also shows complex structure. This could be indication of gentle accretion of material onto the core or interaction of two filaments, producing a slow shock. We measure the rotational temperature and show that methanol is in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) only close to the dust peak, where it is significantly depleted. The CH$_3$OH column density, $N_{tot}({\rm CH_3OH})$, profile has been derived with non-LTE radiative transfer modelling and compared with chemical models of a static core. The measured $N_{tot}({\rm CH_3OH})$ profile is consistent with model predictions, but the total column densities are one order of magnitude lower than those predicted by models, suggesting that the efficiency of reactive desorption or atomic hydrogen tunnelling adopted in the model may be overestimated; or that an evolutionary model is needed to better reproduce methanol abundance., 19 pages, 18 figures. Abstract: We introduce and study the computational power of Oritatami, a theoretical model to explore greedy molecular folding, by which the molecule begins to fold before waiting the end of its production. This model is inspired by our recent experimental work demonstrating the construction of shapes at the nanoscale by folding an RNA molecule during its transcription from an engineered sequence of synthetic DNA. While predicting the most likely conformation is known to be NP-complete in other models, Oritatami sequences fold optimally in linear time. Although our model uses only a small subset of the mechanisms known to be involved in molecular folding, we show that it is capable of efficient universal computation, implying that any extension of this model will have this property as well. We introduce general design techniques for programming these molecules. Our main result in this direction is an algorithm in time linear in the sequence length, that finds a rule for folding the sequence deterministically into a prescribed set of shapes depending of its environment. This shows the corresponding problem is fixed-parameter tractable although we proved it is NP-complete in the number of possible environments. This algorithm was used effectively to design several key steps of our constructions.

Abstract: International audience; The paper presents the results of a joint analysis of ground-based and satellite observations of very low-frequency and low-frequency (VLF/LF) signals during periods of strong seismic activity in the region of Kuril Islands and Japan in 2004–2010. Ground and satellite data was processed using a method based on the difference between the real signal in nighttime and that of a model. The results of the analysis show a good correlation between ground-based and satellite data for several cases of strong (M ⩾ 6.8) earthquakes.

Abstract: In the field of algorithmic self-assembly, a long-standing unproven conjecture has been that of the NP-hardness of binary pattern tile set synthesis (2-PATS). The $k$-PATS problem is that of designing a tile assembly system with the smallest number of tile types which will self-assemble an input pattern of $k$ colors. Of both theoretical and practical significance, $k$-PATS has been studied in a series of papers which have shown $k$-PATS to be NP-hard for $k = 60$, $k = 29$, and then $k = 11$. In this paper, we close the fundamental conjecture that 2-PATS is NP-hard, concluding this line of study. While most of our proof relies on standard mathematical proof techniques, one crucial lemma makes use of a computer-assisted proof, which is a relatively novel but increasingly utilized paradigm for deriving proofs for complex mathematical problems. This tool is especially powerful for attacking combinatorial problems, as exemplified by the proof of the four color theorem by Appel and Haken (simplified later by Robertson, Sanders, Seymour, and Thomas) or the recent important advance on the Erd\H{o}s discrepancy problem by Konev and Lisitsa using computer programs. We utilize a massively parallel algorithm and thus turn an otherwise intractable portion of our proof into a program which requires approximately a year of computation time, bringing the use of computer-assisted proofs to a new scale. We fully detail the algorithm employed by our code, and make the code freely available online.

Abstract: Part 2: Regular Papers; International audience; Asynchronous Boolean totalistic cellular automata have recently attracted attention as promising models for the implementation of reaction-diffusion systems. It is unknown, however, to what extent they are able to conduct computation. In this paper, we introduce the so-called non-camouflage property, which means that a cell’s update is insensitive to neighboring states that equal its own state. This property is stronger than the Boolean totalistic property, which signifies the existence of states in a cell’s neighborhood, but is not concerned with how many cells are in those states. We argue that the non-camouflage property is extremely useful for the implementation of reaction-diffusion systems, and we construct an asynchronous cellular automaton with this property that is Turing-complete. This indicates the feasibility of computation by reaction-diffusion systems.

Abstract: Complex organic molecules have been observed for decades in the interstellar medium. Some of them might be considered as small bricks of the macromolecules at the base of terrestrial life. It is hence particularly important to understand organic chemistry in Solar-like star forming regions. In this article, we present a new observational project: SOLIS (Seeds Of Life In Space). This is a Large Project at the IRAM-NOEMA interferometer, and its scope is to image the emission of several crucial organic molecules in a sample of Solar-like star forming regions in different evolutionary stage and environments. Here, we report the first SOLIS results, obtained from analysing the spectra of different regions of the Class 0 source NGC1333-IRAS4A, the protocluster OMC-2 FIR4, and the shock site L1157-B1. The different regions were identified based on the images of formamide (NH2CHO) and cyanodiacetylene (HC5N) lines. We discuss the observed large diversity in the molecular and organic content, both on large (3000-10000 au) and relatively small (300-1000 au) scales. Finally, we derive upper limits to the methoxy fractional abundance in the three observed regions of the same order of magnitude of that measured in few cold prestellar objects, namely ~10^-12-10^-11 with respect to H2 molecules., Comment: Accepted for publication on The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: The Fermi surface of elemental bismuth consists of three small rotationally equivalent electron pockets, offering a valley degree of freedom to charge carriers. A relatively small magnetic field can confine electrons to their lowest Landau level. This is the quantum limit attained in other dilute metals upon application of sufficiently strong magnetic field. Here, we report on the observation of another threshold magnetic field never encountered before in any other solid. Above this field, $B_{\rm{empty}}$, one or two valleys become totally empty. Drying up a Fermi sea by magnetic field in the Brillouin zone leads to a manyfold enhancement in electric conductance. We trace the origin of the large drop in magnetoresistance across $B_{\rm{empty}}$ to transfer of carriers between valleys with highly anisotropic mobilities. The non-interacting picture of electrons with field-dependent mobility explains most results. Abstract: International audience; The last eruption of Mt Fuji (Japan) occurred in A.D. 1707. The eruption lasted 16 days from 16 December 1707 to 1 January 1708 (Tsuya, 1955) and 1.8 km3 of volcanic materials were ejected in total (Miyaji et al., 2011). Lake Yamanaka, a very shallow lake (max. 14. 3 m depth) located at the foot of the east-north-eastern flank of Mt Fuji, was heavily impacted by the eruption. A thick scoria layer entirely covered the catchment of Lake Yamanaka. The thickness of the deposit varies from 5 to 37 cm around Lake Yamanaka and reaches up to 149 cm at the south-west extremity of the catchment (Miyaji et al., 2011). In order to study the influence of Hoei eruption on Lake Yamanaka, 5 gravity cores were taken during the 2014 QuakeRecNankai campaign. The Hoei scoria was present at the bottom of the one core and in the core catcher of the four other cores. High resolution magnetic susceptibility, XRD, XRF, LOI, C/N and 210Pb/137Cs analyses were performed on the gravity cores. The results shows three distinct periods of sedimentation: (1) From Hoei eruption to A.D. 1900; (2) From A.D. 1900 to A.D. 1990; (3) From A.D. 1990 to A.D. 2014. The first period is characterized by a very low sedimentation rate (~0.07 cm/yr). During this period, the sediments of the catchment were trapped below the thick Hoei scoria layer. However, peaks of terrigenous input are recorded. We link such detrical signals with violent typhoons that hit the Fuji Five Lakes region. The water from the heavy rains percolated through the porous thick scoria layer and saturated it. As a result, surface runoffs carried the sediments from the catchment into Lake Yamanaka. The second period (from A.D. 1900 to A.D. 1990) is defined by an increase of the sedimentation rate (~0.16 cm/yr). The development of soil and the agriculture (e.g. pastureland, rice field, mulberry plantations) reduced the impact of Hoei scoria. The terrigenous inputs are higher than previously but remained more or less constant during this period of time. As the thickness of the scoria layer is partially reduced or covered by new soil, rains triggered by smaller typhoons could drain the sediments from watershed and transport them into the lake. The most recent period representing the last 27 years is characterized by a very high sedimentation rate (~1.036 cm/yr). The transition between period 2 and period 3 corresponds to the development of mass tourism and the urbanization around Lake Yamanaka. It is marked by an increasing of atmospheric pollution (Pb, Zn). In the upper part of the cores, a peak of 137Cs is observed. Such peak is related to cesium fall-out after Fukushima incident in 2011. In addition to the fingerprint of human impact, the lake also record a terrigenous signal related to the 2007 Fitow typhoon which provoked damage in the area. This study highlights the influence of eruptions and typhoons on the sedimentation of Lake Yamanaka. In the present day, the sedimentation recovery after a major eruption is accelerated by human activity.

Abstract: The interstellar delivery of carbon atoms locked into molecules might be one of the key ingredients for the emergence of life. Cyanopolyynes are carbon chains delimited at their two extremities by an atom of hydrogen and a cyano group, meaning that they could be excellent reservoirs of carbon. The simplest member, HC3N, is ubiquitous in the galactic interstellar medium and found also in external galaxies. Thus, understanding the growth of cyanopolyynes in regions forming stars similar to our Sun, and what affects them, is particularly relevant. In the framework of the IRAM/NOEMA Large Program SOLIS (Seeds Of Life In Space), we have obtained a map of two cyanopolyynes, HC3N and HC5N, in the protocluster OMC-2 FIR4. Because our Sun is thought to be born in a rich cluster, OMC-2 FIR4 is one of the closest and best known representatives of the environment in which the Sun may have been born. We find a HC3N/HC5N abundance ratio across the source in the range 1..30, with the smallest values (≤10) in FIR5 and in the eastern region of FIR4. The ratios ≤10 can be reproduced by chemical models only if: (1) the cosmic-ray ionisation rate is ∼4× 10-14 s-1; (2) the gaseous elemental ratio C/O is close to unity; and (3) oxygen and carbon are largely depleted. The large is comparable to that measured in FIR4 by previous works and was interpreted as due to a flux of energetic (≥10 MeV) particles from embedded sources. We suggest that these sources could lie east of FIR4 and FIR5. A temperature gradient across FIR4, with T decreasing from east to west by about 10 K, could also explain the observed change in the HC3N/HC5N line ratio, without the need of a cosmic ray ionisation rate gradient. However, even in this case, a high constant cosmic-ray ionisation rate (of the order of 10s s-1) is necessary to reproduce the observations. © ESO 2017. Abstract: Part 5: Impression, Trust, and Risk Management; International audience; A method for de-anonymizing social network accounts is presented to clarify the privacy risks of such accounts as well as to deter their misuse such as by posting copyrighted, offensive, or bullying contents. In contrast to previous de-anonymization methods, which link accounts to other accounts, the presented method links accounts to resumes, which directly represent identities. The difficulty in using machine learning for de-anonymization, i.e. preparing positive examples of training data, is overcome by decomposing the learning problem into subproblems for which training data can be harvested from the Internet. Evaluation using 3 learning algorithms, 2 kinds of sentence features, 238 learned classifiers, 2 methods for fusing scores from the classifiers, and 30 volunteers’ accounts and resumes demonstrated that the proposed method is effective. Because the training data are harvested from the Internet, the more information that is available on the Internet, the greater the effectiveness of the presented method.

Abstract: A facile approach to individualize spherically aggregated pristine carbon nanohorns (pr-CNHs) was established. Specifically, we found that treatment of pr-CNHs with chlorosulfonic acid generates positively charged polarized species, which disintegrate toward individualized carbon nanohorns (in-CNHs). Interestingly, the isolated in-CNHs were revealed to be p-doped owing to the adsorption of chlorosulfonate units. The findings were confirmed by data derived from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging, Raman and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, and additionally supported by theoretical calculations and thermogravimetry.

Abstract: Radiation measurements are key information for risk communication in post-nuclear accident situations. Among the different social media platforms, Twitter offers automated accounts which have been used to share the readings, but often in an incomplete way from the perspective of data sharing and risk communication between citizen and radiation experts. In this paper, the authors investigate the requirements for radiation measurements, by analysing the perceived usefulness of several metadata items that may go along the measurement itself. They carried out a benchmark of existing usages, and conducted a survey with both experts and lay citizens. They thus produced a set of guidelines regarding the metadata that should be used. Furthermore, they created a prototype of a software tool to publish complete measurements and metadata containing suitable information for both experts and citizen based on the requirements.

Abstract: The VHF electromagnetic noise intensity data at several stations in the Tohoku area of Japan during the period of a rather large (with magnitude of 7.2) earthquake (Miyagi-ken oki earthquake) taken place on 16 August 2005, are analyzed by means of different fractal analysis methods, including (1) spectral slope estimation, (2) multi-fractal detrended fluctuation analysis and (3) multi-fractal wavelet transform modulus maxima method. It seems to the authors that there is no definite analysis method for the analysis of any seismogenic phenomenon, so that the only way we have to take, is to apply different methods to the same data for the detailed comparison of the results. This comparison enables us to deduce the properties commonly observed by the above methods. Because the most important feature common to these three methods, is that significant changes in fractal scaling characteristics are observed just during the earthquake (mainly before the earthquake) only at one station of Kunimi. Finally, we can come to the definite conclusion on the self-organization of VHF emissions only at one station in the present case.
