In 1916, Aurora Teixeira de Castro, a Law student at the University of Coimbra, upon learning that she had failed an exam, questioned some members of the jury in aggressive language, being supported by two fellow students. As a result, a case was opened against the three students by the academic police, which gave rise to a movement of solidarity with them and of protest against the Faculty of Law. The analysis of the proceeding provides a study of gender relations in higher education and an opportunity to contextualize the political protests set in motion by the case. The rebellious behavior of a student who was part of the first generation of women to graduate in law in Portugal signals a break with the traditional female archetype associated with submission and shows how the First Republic was introducing changes in gender identities and in the contestation of symbols of power.

En el contexto del estudio de las finanzas de la Universidad, este artículo pretende comparar dos fuentes de distinta tipología, una de carácter cuantitativo y otra de carácter cualitativo. La primera corresponde a los libros de ingresos y gastos de la Universidad, un registro detallado de todos los flujos de caja de la institución. La segunda fuente corresponde a la Relação do Rector Francisco de Lemos, que proporciona un testimonio detallado sobre las finanzas de esta Universidad. La información contable se introdujo en una base de datos para categorizar los diferentes ingresos y gastos y calcular las sumas. La comparación entre estos dos tipos de fuentes buscará responder a nuestra pregunta central: ¿cuáles son las similitudes y diferencias entre las fuentes, en relación con la realidad financiera de la Universidad de Coimbra entre 1773 y 1777? Los libros de ingresos y gastos resultan ser mejores instrumentos para el análisis financiero. Las mayores diferencias entre las cuentas fueron la no inclusión de los créditos solicitados para la ejecución de obras por parte de la Universidad, así como la separación de las obras de los demás gastos, por parte de Don Francisco, con el fin de ocultar el endeudamiento real de la Universidad.

In this paper, each contribution uses an object biography – or object itinerary – methodology, tracking their chosen objects from conception and purchase, across time and space, to today. The function of each object could change significantly over time, and these stories serve to remind us of the range of projects and activities that observatories might support or host, including overseas astronomical expeditions, a local time service, mathematical calculations, measurement of photographic plates, magnetic, meteorological and seismological observation, the hosting and dining of visitors, and the display and promotion of the observatory’s status. In each case, the object’s movements and location within particular spaces point the reader to consider a wide range of people, whether located within the observatory, beyond its walls, or within international scientific networks. The objects considered here are a London-made marine chronometer purchased by the Palermo Observatory, which was not used for navigation but was nevertheless well travelled; a large wooden table placed in the Octagon Room of the Royal Observatory Greenwich; and a British seismograph set up in at the Meteorological and Magnetic Observatory of the University of Coimbra. These itineraries also show how the value attached to objects changes over time: they shift from functional tools to obsolescence, then regain significance as their histories have been recovered and re-examined. This paper forms part of the collection ‘Revealing observatory networks through object stories’ where object stories are presented in three themed papers (with further papers being ‘Instrumental networks’ and ‘Observatory audiences’). The genesis of the collection is described in the ‘Introduction’.
