For music to arouse the emotions, observes the sixteenth-century Venetian music theorist Gioseffo Zarlino, four ingredients are required: harmony, rhythm, text, and 'a well-disposed subject [sqggetto ben disposto] fit to receive some emotion [passione].' The last point--that listeners must be properly 'disposed' toward an emotion before they can be moved--features in contemporaneous writings as diverse as Torquato Tasso's epic Gerusalemme liberata (1581) and Bartolomeo Cavalcanti's manual on oratory La retorica (1558). The present article unveils this neglected aspect of Cinquecento theories of music and emotion and explores its relevance to the Italian madrigal. Specifically, I propose the importance to sixteenth-century conversations about music and the affetti of what I call the two-stage model of emotional arousal, a paradigm according to which the onset of emotion in any listener takes place in two phases: first, a subtle inclination toward a given emotion; and second, the true 'movement' of the soul that constitutes the emotion itself. Hitherto unidentified in both musicology and the humanities in general, this model stems, I show, from the ancient rhetorical tradition, with Aristotle's Rhetoric its probable fans et origo. After tracing the model's influence across a corpus of literary and theoretical texts, I study its implications for musical analysis in a madrigal cycle by Giaches de Wert on stanzas by Tasso: 'Vezzosi augelli,' 'Qual musico gentil,' and 'Forsennata gridava,' all from the composer's Ottavo libro de madrtgiali (1586). This case study invites reconsideration of staple text-setting devices of the genre, including declamatory homophony and the madrigalism. This paper examines a twofold tension in Gerhard Schurz's (2019 (See CR12)) recent proposal to solve Hume's problem of induction. Schurz concedes to the skeptic that there is no non-circular epistemic justification of the reliability of induction, but then argues for the optimality of meta-induction so that if any prediction method is reliable, then meta-induction is. There is a tension in this proposal between meta-induction and our inductive practice: Are we supposed to abandon our inductive practice in favor of meta-induction? Schurz claims that given the actual way the world has been, the meta-inductive method supports the standard inductive method. There then arises a second tension: The challenges Schurz cites against the reliability of induction-such as the anti-inductive hypothesis and the state-uniform probability distribution-cast doubt on Schurz's claim that meta-induction supports induction. Between the 1830s and the 1880s, leading female singers such as Henriette Rossi Sontag, Laure Cinti-Damoreau, Adelina Patti, and Pauline Viardot participated in a widespread custom of inscribing original vocal cadenzas in autograph albums (also known as friendship albums, keepsake albums, alba amicorum, or Stammbucher). The appeal of album cadenzas, along with other compact inscriptions, reflects a wider Romantic fascination with remembering through small keepsakes such as miniature almanacs and annual compilations of poetry, prose, or music. Whether improvised in the presence of collectors or offered as souvenirs of earlier performances, cadenzas functioned as mementos of musical and social encounters while visually representing singers' musical personae through performative gestures. These florid pieces also allowed female singers to exercise agency as both creative artists and curators of their public images, much like the (mostly male) composers whose musical signatures fill surrounding album leaves. As performance-practical sources, vocal cadenzas preserve rare and revealing traces of singers' artistry; many, in fact, can be linked to specific concerts or performances of operas by Bellini, Donizetti, Meyerbeer, Rossini, Verdi, and others. In the case of Cinti-Damoreau, such music illuminates the connection between improvisation, performance, and pedagogy. The gradual disappearance of album cadenzas during the last quarter of the nineteenth century is attributable not only to a waning interest in musical improvisation generally, but also to a shift in creative authority away from singers and toward composers, particularly in the operatic realm.
