Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we introduce a novel computer vision-based perception system, dedicated to the autonomous navigation of visually impaired people. A first feature concerns the real-time detection and recognition of obstacles and moving objects present in potentially cluttered urban scenes. To this purpose, a motion-based, real-time object detection and classification method is proposed. The method requires no a priori information about the obstacle type, size, position or location. In order to enhance the navigation/positioning capabilities offered by traditional GPS-based approaches, which are often unreliably in urban environments, a building/landmark recognition approach is also proposed. Finally, for the specific case of indoor applications, the system has the possibility to learn a set of user-defined objects of interest. Here, multi-object identification and tracking is applied in order to guide the user to localize such objects of interest. The feedback is presented to user by audio warnings/alerts/indications. Bone conduction headphones are employed in order to allow visually impaired to hear the systems warnings without obstructing the sounds from the environment. Abstract: International audience; In this paper we propose a novel method for automatic identification of semantically consistent story units from TV news programs. The method includes a temporal segmentation procedure of the video based on visual cues, as well as a graph-driven textual analysis technique of the subtitles documents. Abstract: International audience; In this paper we propose a novel method for TV news retrieval. A first stage concerns a temporal segmentation into stories units. Then, for each story the most relevant concepts are extracted based on a multimodal fusion between visual and textual information. By analyzing the video stream, we perform global frame representation, image retrieval and re-ranking, in order to determine, with high confidence, the segments boundaries. In addition, by using the video subtitle, we identify the most relevant concepts / topics addressed in each independent segment. The framework is evaluated using one week video archive of France Television and 20 journals from NBC and CNN TV stations. For the temporal video segmentation, our system returns high precision and recall scores, superior to 90%. Regarding the topic association technique, we obtain a mean average precision score superior to 0.5

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we propose a new method for automatic storyboard segmentation of TV news using image retrieval techniques and content manipulation. Our framework performs: shot boundary detection, global key-frame representation, image re-ranking based on neighborhood relations and temporal variance of image locations in order to construct a unimodal cluster for anchor person detection and differentiation. Finally, anchor shots are used to form video scenes. The entire technique is unsupervised being able to learn semantic models and extract natural patterns from the current video data. The experimental evaluation performed on a dataset of 50 videos, totalizing more than 30 hours, demonstrates the pertinence of the proposed method, with gains in terms of recall and precision rates with more than 5-7% when compared with state of the art techniques

Abstract: In the most recent report published by the World Health Organization concerning people with visual disabilities it is highlighted that by the year 2020, worldwide, the number of completely blind people will reach 75 million, while the number of visually impaired (VI) people will rise to 250 million. Within this context, the development of dedicated electronic travel aid (ETA) systems, able to increase the safe displacement of VI people in indoor/outdoor spaces, while providing additional cognition of the environment becomes of outmost importance. This paper introduces a novel wearable assistive device designed to facilitate the autonomous navigation of blind and VI people in highly dynamic urban scenes. The system exploits two independent sources of information: ultrasonic sensors and the video camera embedded in a regular smartphone. The underlying methodology exploits computer vision and machine learning techniques and makes it possible to identify accurately both static and highly dynamic objects existent in a scene, regardless on their location, size or shape. In addition, the proposed system is able to acquire information about the environment, semantically interpret it and alert users about possible dangerous situations through acoustic feedback. To determine the performance of the proposed methodology we have performed an extensive objective and subjective experimental evaluation with the help of 21 VI subjects from two blind associations. The users pointed out that our prototype is highly helpful in increasing the mobility, while being friendly and easy to learn.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we propose a navigation assistant for visually impaired people, which uses computer vision techniques and is integrated on a wearable device. The system makes it possible to detect and recognize, in real-time, both static and dynamic objects existent in outdoor urban scenes without any a priori knowledge about the obstruction type or location. The detection system is based on relevant interest point extraction and tracking, background/camera motion estimation and foreground object identification through motion vectors clustering. The classification method receives as input image patches extracted by the detection module, performs global image representation using binary VLAD and prediction based on SVM. The feedback of our system is transmitted to visually impaired users through bone-conduction headphones as a set of audio warning messages. The entire system is fully integrated on a regular smartphone. The experimental evaluation performed on a set of 20 videos acquired with the help of VI users, demonstrates the pertinence of the proposed methodology

Our re-ranking algorithm uses relational graphs and the top-& neighborhood candidates to adaptively modify images similarity scores. The method is effective and increases the accuracy, without relying on low-level information or features geometrical verification.

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a new framework for obstacle localization and classification. The proposed method is designed to improve cognition of visually impaired people (VI) facilitating the autonomous navigation in outdoor environments. In the context of computer vision applications, the following contributions are proposed and validated: (i) a new method of selecting a reduced and relevant set of interest points, (ii) a novel descriptor denoted Adaptive Histogram of Oriented Gradients (A-HOG) dedicated to arbitrary categories of objects, (iii) an image re-ranking method at Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptor (VLAD) / Bag of Visual Word (BoVW) descriptor level based on graph spanning structures and neighborhood relations. Finally, we demonstrate the performance of the proposed framework (in terms of classification accuracy and computational time) on a challenging video dataset captured with the help of real VI users. The entire framework is completely integrated on an Android smartphone device, while all methods were specifically designed and tuned under the constraint of achieving real-time processing capabilities.

Abstract: In this paper we propose a novel method to improve the performance of image retrieval at VLAD descriptor level. The system performs image re-ranking based on relational graphs and neighborhood relations of the top-k candidate results. The technique is able to treat differently various parts of the graph spanning structures by adaptively modifying the similarity score between images. Because most of the processing is performed offline, our algorithm does not influence the retrieval time. By dealing with uneven distribution of images in the dataset, the method is effective and increases the accuracy without relying on low-level information or on the geometrical verification of the considered features.

Abstract: In this paper we introduce an assistive device dedicated to visual impaired / blind people completely integrated on a regular smartphone. The framework is designed to detect and localize static and dynamic obstacle during user navigation. We start by selecting a reduced and relevant set of FAST interest points based on a regular grid and Harris-Laplacian operator. Then, we construct a global image representation using VLAD (Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptor) that is further whitened using PCA (Principal Component Analysis). At the end the image patch is fed to a SVM (Support Vector Machine) system that uses a statistical procedure to distinguish between different types of obstacles.

Abstract: International audience; This work focuses on the non-destructive evaluation of the bonding quality in different metal/adhesive/composite samples and on the detection of defects simulating a kissing bond, using Shear Horizontal (SH) guided waves. A predictive 2D numerical model, called interphases model and based on finite elements method describing the interface substrate/adhesive by a very thin layer, is developed. Various samples with different adhesion levels obtained by modifying the cohesive and adhesive aspects or including a defect representing a kissing bond are investigated. An experimental study is performed with non-contact ElectroMagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) in excitation and reception. As the wavenumber-frequency sensitive SH modes to the adhesion quality shown by the numerical predictions are not easy to generate experimentally, the analysis of the behaviour of the SH modes is based here on their amplitude. Results show that it is possible to differentiate between the adhesion levels due to different epoxy conversion, the presence or absence of an adhesion promoter or a pollution by a release agent, as well as the detection of the defect.

The system, called ALICE, offers information about the location and possible directions a visual impaired user must follow in order to reach the desired destinations. The navigation is completed with a novel computer vision method that is able to detect and classify, in real-time, both static and dynamic obstacles without any a priori information about the obstacle type, size, position or location. The GPS localization is enriched with a visual landmark recognition technique. Finally, through audio feedback a set of warnings is launched so that the user is alerted of potential hazards. For the feedback, audio bone conduction headphones are employed in order to allow the visually impaired to hear the systems warnings, but also other sounds from the environment. At the hardware level, the system is totally integrated on a smartphone which makes it easy to wear, non-invasive and low-cost.

Abstract: International audience; In these paper we introduce a novel computer vision assistant for autonomous navigation of partially sighted people. We begin by detecting any type of static and dynamic obstacle present in the scene. Then, we introduce an adapted version of HOG (Histogram of Oriented Gradients) descriptor incorporated into the BoVW (Bag of Visual Words) retrieval framework and demonstrate how this combination can be used for obstacle classification. The design is completed with an acoustic feedback that alert user of potential hazards. The audio bone conduction is employed to allow the visually impaired to hear other sounds from the environment. Abstract: International audience; In this paper we introduce a novel framework for 3D object metamorphosis, represented by closed triangular meshes. The systems returns a high quality transition sequence, smooth and gradual, that is visual pleasant and consistent to both source and target topologies. The method starts by parameterizing both the source and the target model to a common domain (the unit sphere). Then, the features selected from the two models are aligned by applying the CTPS C-2 a radial basis functions. We demonstrate how the selected approach can create valid warping by deforming the models embedded into the parametric domain. In the final stage, we propose and validate a novel algorithm to construct a pseudo-supermesh able to approximate both, the source and target 3D objects. By using the pseudo-supermesh we developed a morphing transition consistent with respect to both geometry and topology of the 3D models.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we introduce a real-time obstacle detection and classification system designed to assist visually impaired people to navigate safely, in indoor and outdoor environments, by handling a smartphone device. We start by selecting a set of interest points extracted from an image grid and tracked using the multiscale Lucas - Kanade algorithm. Then, we estimate the camera and background motion through a set of homographic transforms. Other types of movements are identified using an agglomerative clustering technique. Obstacles are marked as urgent or normal based on their distance to the subject and the associated motion vector orientation. Following, the detected obstacles are fed/sent to an object classifier. We incorporate HOG descriptor into the Bag of Visual Words (BoVW) retrieval framework and demonstrate how this combination may be used for obstacle classification in video streams. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach is effective in image sequences with significant camera motion and achieves high accuracy rates, while being computational efficient.

Static and dynamic objects are detected using interest points selected based on an image grid and tracked using the multiscale Lucas-Kanade algorithm. Next, we activated an object classification methodology. We incorporate HOG (Histogram of Oriented Gradients) descriptor into the BoVW (Bag of Visual Words) retrieval framework and demonstrate how this combination may be used for obstacle classification in video streams. The experimental results performed on various challenging scenes demonstrate that our approach is effective in image sequence with important camera movement, including noise and low resolution data and achieves high accuracy, while being computational efficient.

Abstract: Poster; International audience; Recent advances in guided-wave optics bring quantum key distribution (QKD) to a new level where less complex, yet more robust, schemes have been proposed. Through continuous research in this field, newer QKD systems achieve higher bit rate, distance, and reliability. Entanglement-based QKD receives enormous attention from the scientific community, in order to increase the communication distance and to go to device-independent systems. In this framework, photons are generally the preferred qubit carrier, taking advantage of low-loss fibre optical networks, and high-performance standard telecom components. Future QKD networks will demand sources exhibiting high brightness, reliability, and photons in the standard telecom ITU channels for compatibility and easy integration with current technology. One of the most exploited approaches towards genera- ting photonic entanglement is based on the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in non-linear crystals. Usually employed entanglement observables are energy-time and polarization. The latter one is, without doubt, the easiest to analyze thanks to interferometer-free setups. Polarization entanglement is conveniently generated via the so-called type-II SPDC interaction, possibly in a waveguide non-linear structure for increasing the efficiency. Nevertheless, with a type-II source, there are some precautions that must be taken for achieving high entanglement qualities. In particular, the generated paired photons need to be spectrally and temporally indistinguishable. Typically, this requires spectral filtering, and temporal walk-off compensation stages. So far, these issues have been addressed by using bulk optics arrangements. We demonstrate a fully fibred approach based on a type-II periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide (PPLN/W) generating paired photons at 1540 nm (telecom C-band wavelength). We highlight the use of a standard polarization maintaining fibre (PMF) as an essentially loss-free, guided-wave solution to the temporal walk-off problem. By using standard telecom DWDMs, we perform, at the same time, the tasks of spectral filtering and deterministic photon pair separation in two ITU channels. By the violation of the Bell's inequalities with more than 100 standard deviations, we demonstrate excellent entanglement qualities and high coincidence rates. Our fully fibred approach offers very low losses, high reliability, and would be ready for QKD field tests.

Abstract: We report a novel and simple approach for generating near-perfect quality polarization entanglement in a fully guided-wave fashion. Both deterministic pair separation into two adjacent telecommunication channels and the paired photons' temporal walk-off compensation are achieved using standard fiber components. Two-photon interference experiments are performed, both for quantitatively demonstrating the relevance of our approach, and for manipulating the produced state between bosonic and fermionic symmetries. The compactness, versatility, and reliability of this configuration makes it a potential candidate for quantum communication applications., 6 figures

Abstract: International audience; Developing electrolyzers operating under neutral or near-neutral conditions with catalysts based only on earth-abundant metals is highly desirable with a view to reduce the cost of hydrogen production from water splitting reaction and avoid the environmental issues related to corrosion usually encountered with alkaline electrolyzers. Herein, we report a highly active and stable anode material for oxygen evolving reaction (OER) in mild-pH conditions based on cobalt oxide-nanoparticles embedded into a poly(pyrrole-alkylammonium) matrix (denoted PPN+-CoOx). Examples of hybrid materials combining metal oxide nanoparticles as OER catalysts within a polymer film are still rare. However, they are very promising to control the formation and the size of metal particles in view to enhance the electrochemically active surface area and thus the electrocatalytic performances. Our strategy consists in electroprecipitating Co0 nanoparticles by reduction of an anionic cobalt oxalate complex into the cationic PPN+ film, the latter being previously deposited onto an electrode surface by electropolymerization. The Co0 nanoparticles within the composite are then partially in-situ oxidized under air exposure into CoO, and then finally fully oxidized into CoOx by successive scans between 0 and 1.2 V vs Ag/AgCl in a borate buffer at pH 9.2. This nanocomposite material is highly structured with around 30 nm-large CoOx nanoparticles well dispersed into the polypyrrole film conferring a high OER electrocatalytic activity at near neutral pH of 9.2 with exceptional values of mass activity and turnover frequency of 3.01 A mg-1 and 0.46 s-1 respectively, at an overpotential of 0.61 V and with a cobalt loading of 1.34 µg cm-2. These performances place the PPN+-CoOx electrode among the most active anodes described in the literature employing cobalt oxide under mild pH conditions. In addition, when the PPN+-CoOx material is electrodeposited on carbon paper with a higher roughness than a simple carbon electrode, the physisorption of the film on the electrode is considerably enhanced resulting in a stable catalytic current over more than 43 h. Post electrolysis characterizations by SEM and EDX confirm the integrity of the PPN+-CoOx material after long hours of electrocatalysis. This demonstrates the beneficial role of the polypyrrole matrix in the achievement of very stable and highly active anodes for water oxidation.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we introduce the DEEP-AD framework, a multimodal advertisement insertion system dedicated to online video platforms. The framework is designed from the viewer's perspective, in terms of commercial contextual relevance and degree of intrusiveness. The main contribution of the paper concerns a novel multimodal temporal video segmentation algorithm into scenes/stories, which makes it possible to determine automatically the temporal instants that are the most appropriate for inserting advertisement clips. The proposed algorithm exploits various deep convolutional neural networks, involved at several stages. The video stream is first divided into shots based on a graph partition method. The video shots are then clustered into scenes/story units with the help of an agglomerative clustering methodology taking as input visual, audio and semantic features. Furthermore, in order to facilitate the user's access to multimedia documents a novel thumbnail extraction method is proposed based on both semantic representativeness and visual quality information. Finally, the optimal advertisement insertion points are determined based on the ads temporal distribution, commercial diversity and degree of intrusiveness. The experimental results, carried out on a large dataset of more than 30 videos, taken from the French National Television and US TV series validate the proposed methodology with average accuracy and recognition rates superior to 88%. Moreover, when compared with other state of the art methods, the proposed temporal video segmentation yields gains of more than 6% in precision and recall rates.

Abstract: International audience; Mathematical modelling plays an important role in food engineering having various mathematical models tailored for different food topics. However, mathematical models are followed by limited information on their application in food companies. This paper aims to discuss the extent and the conditions surrounding the usage of mathematical models in the context of European food and drinks industry. It investigates the knowledge, nature and current use of modelling approaches in relation to the industry main characteristics. A total of 203 food companies from 12 European countries were included in this research.Results reveal that the country where the company operates, and size of the company, are more important predictors on the usage of mathematical models followed by the type of food sector. The more developed countries are positioned at the higher level of knowledge and use of available models. Similar pattern was observed at the micro level showing that small or medium sized companies exhibit lack of knowledge, resources and limiting usage of models.

Pour des raisons de coût, ce choix est rarement revisité après déploiement. Cette approche classique est limitée lorsque les protections matérielles viennent à casser, lorsque le matériel devient hétérogène, ou lorsque l'on cherche à spécialiser dynamiquement le système pour un cas d'usage précis. Nous présentons FlexOS, un système d'exploitation permettant de facilement spécialiser la stratégie d'isolation du noyau à la compilation et non à la conception. FlexOS est un LibOS modulable incluant des composants isolables à des granularités variables via de multiples mécanismes, d'un langage de description permettant à l'utilisateur de détailler les besoins en sécurité du système, et d'un framework d'exploration automatique des compromis de sécurité et performance offerts par FlexOS pour une application donnée. Abstract: International audience; The current coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) became a worldwide threat, infecting more than 42 million people since its outbreak in early 2020. Recent studies show that analyzing chest CT scans plays an essential role in assessing disease progression and facilitates early diagnosis. Automatic lesion segmentation constitutes a useful tool to complement more traditional healthcare system strategies to address the COVID-19 crisis. We introduce MASC-Net, a novel deep neural network that automatically detects COVID-19 related infected lung regions from chest CT scans. The proposed architecture consists of a multi-input encoder-decoder that aggregates high-level features extracted with variable-size receptive fields.

Abstract: WOS:000454112700025; International audience; This paper studies the application of distributed and centralized solutions for voltage control in low voltage (LV) grids with high photovoltaic (PV) penetration. In traditional LV grids, the coordination of distributed PV converters and a centralized device would require massive investments in new communication and control infrastructures. The alternative of exploiting distributed PV converters for voltage control is discussed, showing that it can help to stabilize the voltage in the grid connection points also without coordination between them and/or with a centralized unit. The goal of this paper is to investigate how the setup of the voltage controllers inside PV inverters affects the operation of these controllers taking into account the limits for reactive power injection. In addition, the interaction of distributed PV converters with centralized devices (static var compensators and on load tap changers) is analyzed to assess whether additional benefits may come in these cases.

Furthermore, calculation errors are introduced when analyzing only subsets of the dataset, i.e., wrong weighting are computed as weighting schemes use the number of documents for scoring keywords and documents. Therefore, in a Big Data context, it is crucial to lower the runtime of computing weighting schemes, without hindering the analysis process and the accuracy of the machine learning algorithms. To address this requirement for the task of computing top-k keywords and documents (which largely relies on weighting schemes), it is customary to design benchmarks that compare weighting schemes within various configurations of distributedframeworks and database management systems. Thus, we propose TextBenDS - a generic document-oriented benchmark for storing textual data and constructing weighting schemes. Our benchmark offers a generic data model designed with a multidimensional approach for storing text documents. We also propose using aggregation queries with various complexities and selectivities for constructing term weighting schemes, that are utilized in extracting top-k keywords and documents. We evaluate the computing performance of the queries on several distributed environments set within the Apache Hadoop ecosystem. Our experimental results provide interesting insights. As an example, MongoDB shows the best overall performance, while Spark’s execution time remains almost constant regardless of weighting schemes.

Abstract: The synthesis of a dyad involving a small arylamine-dicyanovinyl push-pull system as donor block and C60 fullerene as acceptor, connected by a flexible insulating linker formed by esterification of a β-hydroxymethylthiophene spacer is described. Unlike previously reported parent dyads with linkers connected at the 2-position of the thienyl spacer, this mode of connection allows the preservation of a free carbaldehyde group and thus the possibility to modulate the energy levels of the push-pull donor block. The electronic properties of the new dyad are analyzed by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and theoretical calculations. A preliminary evaluation of this compound as active material for single-material organic solar cells is reported and discussed with reference to the mode of linkage of donor and C60 blocks.

Abstract: In this study, the cerium-doped hydroxyapatite (Ca10−xCex(PO4)6(OH)2 with xCe = 0.1, 10Ce-HAp) coatings obtained by the spin coating method were presented for the first time. The stability of the 10Ce-HAp suspension particles used in the preparation of coatings was evaluated by ultrasonic studies, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface morphology of the 10Ce-HAp coating was studied by SEM and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. The obtained 10Ce-HAp coatings were uniform and without cracks or unevenness. Glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used for the investigation of fine chemical depth profiling. The antifungal properties of the HAp and 10Ce-HAp suspensions and coatings were assessed using Candida albicans ATCC 10231 (C. albicans) fungal strain. The quantitative antifungal assays demonstrated that both 10Ce-HAp suspensions and coatings exhibited strong antifungal properties and that they successfully inhibited the development and adherence of C. albicans fungal cells for all the tested time intervals. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) visualization of the C. albicans fungal cells adherence to the 10Ce-HAp surface also demonstrated their strong inhibitory effects. In addition, the qualitative assays also suggested that the 10Ce-HAp coatings successfully stopped the biofilm formation.

Abstract: International audience; In the context of global issues concerning pathogen contamination of surface and ground waters, this pioneering study describes the fabrication of screen-printed carbon electrodes modified with polymers molecularly imprinted with lipopolysaccharide in an attempt to detect endotoxins derived from specific Gram-negative bacteria. The biosensors detected lipopolysaccharides derived from Pseudomonas Aeruginosa with high specificity, relative to control sensors, while the response to the same endotoxin derived from Escherichia coli was quite different.

Abstract: International audience; Calculer la distribution des degrés de graphes aléatoires, exactement ou même par approximation, est une question de grande importance. Motivés par l'analyse des systèmes complexes, en particulier des réseaux sociaux, nous étudions cette question dans le cas des modèles d'attachement préférentiel. Plus précisément, nous montrons de nouvelles connexions entre le calcul asymptotique de la distribution des degrés dans ces modèles, et la distribution stationnaire de certains processus de Markov associés. En particulier, il nous permet d'analyser des modèles d'attachements préférentiels complexes, tels que ceux avec des distributions de degrés corrélés, et ceux avec suppressions d'arêtes. Nous appliquons notre approche à un nouveau modèle, créé afin de mieux prendre en compte certaines propriétés importantes du graphe de Twitter. Un autre résultat de l'application de notre méthode est la détermination de la distribution bivariée des degrés entrant et sortant pour le modèle proposé par Bollobas et al. Notre approche est générique, et simplifie et unifie les calculs. Nous nous attendons donc à d'autres applications dans le domaine des graphes aléatoires.

Abstract: The need for cooling is more and more important in current applications, as environmental constraints become more and more restrictive. Therefore, the optimization of reverse cycle machines is currently required. This optimization could be split in two parts, namely, (1) the design optimization, leading to an optimal dimensioning to fulfill the specific demand (static or nominal steady state optimization), and (2) the dynamic optimization, where the demand fluctuates, and the system must be continuously adapted. Thus, the variability of the system load (with or without storage) implies its careful control-command. The topic of this paper is concerned with part (1) and proposes a novel and more complete modeling of an irreversible Carnot refrigerator that involves the coupling between sink (source) and machine through a heat transfer constraint. Moreover, it induces the choice of a reference heat transfer entropy, which is the heat transfer entropy at the source of a Carnot irreversible refrigerator. The thermodynamic optimization of the refrigerator provides new results regarding the optimal allocation of heat transfer conductances and minimum energy consumption with associated coefficient of performance (COP) when various forms of entropy production owing to internal irreversibility are considered. The reported results and their consequences represent a new fundamental step forward regarding the performance upper bound of Carnot irreversible refrigerator.

Abstract: International audience; Recent statistics of the World Health Organization (WHO), published in October 2017, estimate that more than 253 million people worldwide suffer from visual impairment (VI) with 36 million of blinds and 217 million people with low vision. In the last decade, there was a tremendous amount of work in developing wearable assistive devices dedicated to the visually impaired people, aiming at increasing the user cognition when navigating in known/unknown, indoor/outdoor environments, and designed to improve the VI quality of life. This paper presents a survey of wearable/assistive devices and provides a critical presentation of each system, while emphasizing related strengths and limitations. The paper is designed to inform the research community and the VI people about the capabilities of existing systems, the progress in assistive technologies and provide a glimpse in the possible short/medium term axes of research that can improve existing devices. The survey is based on various features and performance parameters, established with the help of the blind community that allows systems classification using both qualitative and quantitative measu.res of evaluation. This makes it possible to rank the analyzed systems based on their potential impact on the VI people life

Abstract: According to harmonic analysis (Fourier analysis), any function f(x), periodic over the interval [−L, L], which satisfies the Dirichlet conditions, can be developed into an infinite sum (known in the literature as the trigonometric series, and for which, for reasons which will become evident in the course of this work, we will use the name of sinusoidal series), consisting of the weighted components of a complete biortogonal base, formed of the unitary function 1, of the fundamental harmonics sin(πx/L), even and cos(πx/L), odd (2L-periodic functions) and of the secondary harmonics sin(nπx/L) and cos(nπx/L) (periodic functions, with period 2L/n, where nZ + , positive integers). The coefficients of these expansions (Fourier coefficients) can be calculated using Euler formulas. We will generalize this statement and show that the function f(x) can also be developed into non-sinusoidal periodic series, formed from the sum of the weighted components of a complete, non-orthogonal base: the unit function 1, the fundamental quasi-harmonics g(x), even and h(x), odd (2L-periodic functions, with zero mean value over the definition interval) and the secondary quasi-harmonics gn(x) and hn(x) (2L/n-periodic functions), where nZ +. The fundamental quasi-harmonics g(x) and h(x) are any functions which admit expansions in sinusoidal series (satisfy Dirichlet conditions, or belong to L 2 space). The coefficients of these expansions are obtained with the help of certain algebraic relationships between the Fourier coefficients of the expansions of the functions f(x), g(x) and h(x). Abstract: According to harmonic analysis (Fourier analysis), any function f(x), periodic over the interval [−L, L], which satisfies the Dirichlet conditions, can be developed into an infinite sum (known in the literature as the trigonometric series, and for which, for reasons which will become evident in the course of this work, we will use the name of sinusoidal series), consisting of the weighted components of a complete biortogonal base, formed of the unitary function 1, of the fundamental harmonics sin(πx/L), even and cos(πx/L), odd (2L-periodic functions) and of the secondary harmonics sin(nπx/L) and cos(nπx/L) (periodic functions, with period 2L/n, where nZ + , positive integers). The coefficients of these expansions (Fourier coefficients) can be calculated using Euler formulas. We will generalize this statement and show that the function f(x) can also be developed into non-sinusoidal periodic series, formed from the sum of the weighted components of a complete, non-orthogonal base: the unit function 1, the fundamental quasi-harmonics g(x), even and h(x), odd (2L-periodic functions, with zero mean value over the definition interval) and the secondary quasi-harmonics gn(x) and hn(x) (2L/n-periodic functions), where nZ +. Abstract: MgB2 bulk superconductors are expected to be utilized as rare-earth-free and lightweight trapped field magnets. However, the flux jumps frequently happen during the magnetizing processes, and heavily degrade the field-trapping performances. We have investigated the effect of additives to the MgB2 bulk samples prepared by spark plasma sintering process, and observed various flux jumps during the pulsed field magnetizing processes, which were carried out at 14 K which was obtained by the 2-stage GM cryocooler. The authors classified the flux motions as three categories as “no flux flow”, “fast flux flow”, and “flux jump” regions, and investigated the conditions where the flux jumps happen. We observed some drastic flux jumps in the pristine and clarified the effect of graphene addition to the flux jumps. The experimental results showed us a possible expansion of no flux jump region, and suggested us the improvement of field trapping capability.

Abstract: International audience; Structural bonds, particularly the ones made of composite materials, have many advantages over other assembly methods. The progress in mastering these two complementary technologies (i.e. structural bonding and composite materials), has made it possible to consider their use in many industrial fields including aeronautics and automobile. Many references exist on bonding quality assessment, but none was addressing the identification of degraded adhesive interface. This work presents numerical and experimental results on the evaluation of the quality of bonding in a metal/adhesive/carbon-epoxy composite structure using Lamb guided waves. For two studied samples, only one of the two interfaces has its bonding quality degraded by inserting a release agent while keeping a good adhesion for the other interface (adhesive degradation). For one other sample, the cross-linking of the epoxy adhesive is partial (cohesive degradation). A numerical study, based on the semi-analytical finite element method (SAFE), is performed. The SAFE model uses extremely thin elastic layers, called interphases, between the adhesive and the plates, which enable an investigation of the bonding quality. Various samples with very different adhesion levels, indicated by a parameter related to the interphase, are investigated and a data base of dispersion curves is thus obtained. An experimental study, based on generation of waves by a piezocomposite transducer and reception by a laser vibrometer, is then performed to plot the experimental dispersion curves. On each experimental result, numerically computed Lamb dispersion curves are superimposed, and the most adequate value of the adhesion quality parameter for each interphase is determined. The different samples quality can be thus identified. Moreover, it is possible to identify on which interface (metal/adhesive or composite/adhesive interface) the quality of the adhesion is degraded.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this paper is to propose a simple and low-cost technique to measure the RCS of a complex target in the Fresnel region and in a multipath environment. The diffracted field by the target is calculated using a method based on equivalent currents. The reflected field is computed using the physical optics approach and the tangent plane approximation. The ratio between the analytical expression of the radar cross section in the far-field and Fresnel region results in a field-zone extrapolation factor for the diffracted field. The RCS resulting from the scattering parameters measured at Fresnel region distances is then corrected with that field-zone extrapolation factor. The method was validated by simulations and measurements on a rectangular, metallic target. © 2020 EurAAP.

Abstract: Waste heat recovery is an actual goal. The best way to valorize waste heat is to use it directly with the appropriate level of temperature. If the temperature level is insufficient, many reverse machine configurations are available in order to obtain the appropriate conditions (the most known are heat pumps and heat transformers). Finally, the remaining unused heat could be converted to any noble form of energy (mechanical, electrical essentially). We propose here to examine, with a new point of view, the thermomechanical conversion limit of waste heat. This limit corresponds to adiabatic conversion for an endo-reversible Carnot engine, with a perfect thermal contact at the atmospheric sink (supposed infinite). The Carnot–Chambadal model version is applied to latent and sensible heat recovery cases. The results associated with these two cases differ fundamentally. Comments are provided on the two studied cases, and new criteria to characterize the corresponding waste heat recovery are proposed.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we introduce a novel advertisement system, dedicated to multimedia documents broadcasted over the Internet. The proposed approach takes into account the consumer’s perspective and inserts contextual relevant ads at the level of the scenes boundaries, while reducing the degree of intrusiveness. From the methodological point of view, the major contribution of the paper concerns a temporal video segmentation method into scenes based on a multimodal (visual, audio and semantic) fusion of information. The experimental evaluation, carried out on a large dataset with more than 30 video documents validates the proposed methodology with average F1 scores superior to 85%.

Abstract: Monazite is one of the most valuable natural resources for rare earth oxides (REOs) used as dopants with high added value in ceramic materials for extreme environments applications. The complexity of the separation process in individual REOs, due to their similar electronic configuration and physical–chemical properties, is reflected in products with high price and high environmental footprint. During last years, there was an increasing interest for using different mixtures of REOs as dopants for high temperature ceramics, in particular for ZrO2-based thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) used in aeronautics and energy co-generation. The use of mixed REOs may increase the working temperature of the TBCs due to the formation of tetragonal and cubic solid solutions with higher melting temperatures, avoiding grain size coarsening due to interface segregation, enhancing its ionic conductivity and sinterability. The thermal stability of the coatings may be further improved by using rare earth zirconates with perovskite or pyrochlore structures having no phase transitions before melting. Within this research framework, firstly we present a review analysis about results reported in the literature so far about the use of ZrO2 ceramics doped with mixed REOs for high temperature applications. Then, preliminary results about TBCs fabricated by electron beam evaporation starting from mixed REOs simulating the real composition as occurring in monazite source minerals are reported. This novel recipe for ZrO2-based TBCs, if optimized, may lead to better materials with lower costs and lower environmental impact, as a result of the elimination of REOs extraction and separation in individual lanthanides. Preliminary results on the compositional, microstructure, morphological, and thermal properties of the tested materials are reported.

Abstract: The dextran-thyme magnesium-doped hydroxyapatite (10MgHAp-Dex-thyme) composite layers were prepared by a dip-coating procedure from stable suspensions and further analyzed for the first time. Different characterization techniques were employed to explore the physical-chemical features of the 10MgHAp-Dex-thyme suspensions and derived coatings. Information regarding the 10MgHAp-Dex-thyme suspensions was extracted on the basis of dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, and ultrasound measurements. The crystalline quality of the biocomposite powders&mdash, resulting after the centrifugation of suspensions&mdash, and the layers deposited on glass was assessed by X-ray diffraction in symmetric and grazing incidence geometries, respectively. The chemical structure and presence of functional groups were evaluated for both powder and coating by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance mode. The extent of the antimicrobial effect range of the biocomposite suspensions and coatings was tested against different Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and fungus (Candida albicans) strains with promising results.

Abstract: Part 2: Security Testing; International audience; During this new world pandemic, a lot of technical issues have come to life, forcing all industries to reinvent themselves and how the day to day operations are performed. Remote working has become not only a trend but a necessity. Starting from online lecturing to online meetings on a need to know basis, people are concerned about their privacy and security in the online environment. Thus, in this paper, we focus our attention to the concepts of trust and reputation models in Wireless Mobile Networks (WMN), Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) more accurately, for secure routing of large data packets with respect to Quality of Service (QoS). This paper analyses the current context in wireless mobile networks, more specifically in wireless sensor networks, and proposes a novel adaptive method to evaluate it by defining a Markov based trust function and a new model to manage it.

Abstract: A simple dip coating procedure was used to prepare the magnesium doped hydroxyapatite coatings. An adapted co-precipitation method was used in order to obtain a Ca25&minus, xMgx(PO4)6(OH)2, 25MgHAp (xMg = 0.25) suspension for preparing the coatings. The stabilities of 25MgHAp suspensions were evaluated using ultrasound measurements, zeta potential (ZP), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) information at nanometric resolution regarding the shape and distribution of the 25MgHAp particles in suspension was obtained. The surfaces of obtained layers were evaluated using SEM and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis. The antimicrobial evaluation of 25MgHAp suspensions and coatings on various bacterial strains and fungus were realized. The present study presents important results regarding the physico-chemical and antimicrobial studies of the magnesium doped hydroxyapatite suspensions, as well as the coatings. The studies have shown that magnesium doped hydroxyapatite suspensions prepared with xMg = 0.25 presented a good stability and relevant antimicrobial properties. The coatings made using 25MgHAp suspension were homogeneous and showed remarkable antimicrobial properties. Also, it was observed that the layer realized has antimicrobial properties very close to those of the suspension. Both samples of the 25MgHAp suspensions and coatings have very good biocompatible properties.

Abstract: International audience; There are numerous turbulence models that have been developed in the past years, many of them being used in predicting flows, turbulence, mass and/or heat transfer. The particular case of an impinging jet implies all of the above. The performance of eight highly used Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence models is examined in simulating a very sheared lobed impinging jet. The study is based on the investigation of an orthogonally lobed jet, impinging on a flat surface that flows out from a nozzle having a cruciform cross-section at a Reynolds number of 5620. Two experimental methods were implied for the comparison with numerical results. For the measurement of the wall shear rate an electrodiffusion method was employed. The velocity flow fields were measured using particle image velocimetry technique. The relative strengths and drawbacks of the SST k-ω, k-ω, TransSST, k-ϵ realisable, RNG k-ϵ, k-ϵ, k-kl-ω and RSM turbulence models are compared. Copyright © 2020 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Abstract: International audience; The states of a single dopant centre in zinc-blende GaN-based conical quantum dots with spherical cap are theoretically investigated by analytically solving the corresponding effective mass equation taking advantage of the localisation of the ionised impurity at the cone apex. Nonlinear optical response is analysed through the calculation of the coefficients of optical absorption, relative refractive index change, and second and third harmonic generation, for the chosen set of allowed electron-donor states. The behaviour of the calculated optical quantities under changes in the geometry of the system due to variations in apical width and quantum dot radius is analysed and discussed.
