Es caracteritza florísticament, ecològicament i sintaxonòmicament les freixenedes al·luvials inundables del nord-est de Catalunya (comarques del Gironès, de la Selva, del Maresme i del Vallès Oriental). Són boscos dominats per Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa, tot i que en certs casos poden ser fisiognòmicament boscos mixtos de F. angustifolia i Quercus robur. Les espècies característiques són: Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa, F. angustifolia subsp. angustifolia, Quercus robur subsp. robur, Carex remota, Oenanthe pimpinelloides, Carex muricata subsp. divulsa, Ranunculus acris subsp. despectus i Rumex conglomeratus. Es tracta de comunitats forestals freatòfiles sovint deslligades dels cursos fluvials, que es desenvolupen damunt de materials al·luvials o palustres holocènics, profunds, orgànics i de textura fina, i que queden inundats des de la tardor fins a la primavera. Aquesta freixeneda s'ubica ecològicament entre el Lamio-Alnetum i el Carici- Quercetum canariensis, i correspon a una comunitat potencial permanent. Després de la comparació amb boscos afins de la mediterrània nord-occidental, sintaxonòmicament incloem les associacions descrites fins ara en dues aliances, Populion albae i Alnion incanae, en la darrera de les quals adscrivim el Carici-Fraxinetum oxycarpae, associació descrita a Itàlia (Pedrotti, 1970, 1992). A Catalunya en distingim tres subassociacions noves: caricetosum cuprinae, quercetosum pubescentis i quercetosum roboris. We typify in floristic, ecologic and syntaxonomic terms ash groves in the floodable alluvial plain of NE part of Iberian Peninsula (in the Gironès, Maresme, La Selva and Vallès Oriental districts of Catalonia). These are woods normally dominated by Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa, although in some cases they may be mixed woods of ash and Quercus robur. The characteristic species are: Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa, F. angustifolia subsp. angustifolia, Quercus robur subsp. robur, Carex remota, Oenanthe pimpinelloides, Carex muricata subsp. divulsa, Ranunculus acris subsp. despectus and Rumex conglomeratus. They are phreatophylous woodland communities which are often disconnected from the courses of rivers, and develop on top of alluvial or marshy sediment of a deep, organic, holocenic nature and fine texture that remain flooded from autumn to spring. This type of ash grove is situated ecologically between Lamio-Alnetum and Carici-Quercetum canariensis, and is a climax community. After de comparation with similar woods of the NE mediterranian we include in syntaxonomic terms the several associations described in two aliances, Populion albae and Alnion incanae. In the last one we assigned the Carici-Fraxinetum oxycarpae, association describe in Italy (Pedrotti, 1970, 1992). In Catalonia we can distinguish three new sub-associations: caricetosum cuprinae, quercetosum pubescentis and quercetosum roboris.

Confined coastal lagoons are shallow and dynamic water bodies that play an important ecological role. Considering the severe degradation they have been facing in the last years, understanding the functioning of these habitats for their proper management and conservation is essential. Nowadays, one of the most important descriptors of ecosystem functioning is the metabolism, the use of which has increased with the application of the free dissolved oxygen (DO) technique and the development of more affordable and reliable sensors. Quantifying metabolic rates as well as identifying the factors that contribute to their temporal and spatial variation are very important in assessing these ecosystems behaviour and their response to future changes. Thus, the aim of the thesis was to estimate the ecosystem metabolism of a set of Mediterranean confined coastal lagoons in La Pletera salt marsh identifying the main drivers of its variation and its application to study phytoplankton Les llacunes costaneres mediterrànies de tipus confinat són cossos d’aigua poc profunds i dinàmics, amb un paper ecològic molt important. Davant la regressió que han patit durant els darrers anys, entendre el funcionament d’aquests habitats per una correcta gestió i conservació esdevé fonamental. Avui dia, un dels descriptors més importants del funcionament ecosistèmic és el metabolisme, l’ús del qual s’ha incrementat amb l’aplicació de la tècnica de l’oxigen lliure i el desenvolupament de sensors cada cop més assequibles i fiables. La quantificació de les taxes metabòliques i la identificació dels factors que contribueixen a la seua variació temporal i espacial són molt importants per avaluar el comportament dels ecosistemes i la seua resposta a futurs canvis. This thesis aimed to assess the responses of stream biota to flow alterations, in terms of water velocity increments and reductions of discharge, and to metal pollution. The investigations performed encompassed (i) respirometry studies using swim-tunnel respirometers to evaluate swimming capabilities, as indicative of water velocity tolerance, and physiological responses (energetic costs of swimming) of several freshwater fishes, as well as the drivers (morphological features) of variation within and among species; and (ii) field observational and mesocosm studies were carried out to evaluate the role of the threatened fish B. meridionalis as modulator of the response of stream ecosystem structure and function to anthropogenic stressors, such as hydrologic alterations (e.g. resulting from the water diversion) and metal pollution Aquesta tesi tenia com a objectiu avaluar les respostes de la biota fluvial a les alteracions del flux, en termes d’increments de la velocitat de l’aigua i reduccions de cabal, i a la contaminació per metalls. We study the effect of organic farming practices on several taxa in olive groves and vineyards. Sessile organisms show a stronger response to treatment, their diversity being higher in organic vineyards. Vagile organism show a less intense response, with the most mobile taxa (birds) showing no farming treatment related differences. Organic olive groves are preferred over conventional groves by some endangered bat species (Rhinolophus spp.), thus stressing their importance for bat conservation. We analize the regulatory ecosystems services bats exert in rice paddies. Bats predate on both agricultural pests (moths and midges) and disease-bearing pests (mosquitoes). The intensity with which they track pests is linked to the cost-benefit trade-off, more evidently shifting their hunting grounds when bigger pests are available. Their economic impact has been assessed in terms of the avoided pesticide cost per hectare of rice crop and year at around 50€ Evaluem l’efecte del maneig ecològic de vinyes i oliverars sobre diversos grups taxonòmics. Humanity has always been closely linked to rivers, benefiting from their resources while producing impacts associated with their activity.Thus, river systems have been exposed to multiple stressors, which have affected the quality of water and their biological communities, such as those attached to substrata (biofilms) or those that are suspended in water (phytoplankton). On the other hand, biological communities also respond and contribute to the transformation and/or degradation of certain anthropogenic organic compounds, such as pharmaceuticals. This thesis investigates the chemical state of the river systems and their impacts on the biological communities, using different approaches and scales La humanitat ha estat sempre íntimament lligada als rius, beneficiant-se dels seus recursos però també produint impactes vinculats a la seva activitat. Macroalgal forests represent some of the most productive and biodiverse habitats on Earth. In the Mediterranean Sea, species of the genus Cystoseira sensu lato (including Cystoseira C. Agardh, Ericaria Stackhouse and Gongolaria Boehmer) dominate the wellpreserved subtidal rocky habitats where they form complex macroalgal communities. However, since the end of the twentieth century, they have suffered important and widespread regressions across the Mediterranean Sea, mainly due to habitat destruction, changes in water quality and overgrazing by sea urchins. As a result, they are often replaced by simpler and less productive communities dominated by opportunistic and stress-resistant taxa that prevent Cystoseira s.l. settlement. Thus, the return to predisturbed conditions does not necessarily imply the natural recovery of Cystoseira s.l. stands, being active restoration the only feasible alternative to assist the recovery of these populations. Nowadays, climate change, especially gradual warming and acute marine heatwaves (MHWs), represents a global threat for macroalgal forests. However, local and regional factors and processes can modify climatic gradients and ultimately define responses of seaweed populations to warming. In this context, while no studies have reported evidence of warming impacts for Cystoseira s.l. forests, taking into account that Cystoseira s.l. populations have been historically impacted and the expected climate change scenarios for the Mediterranean Sea, it is of paramount importance to know how climate change can affect these species. Within the framework of this thesis two well-differentiated main objectives have been addressed. First, we aim at understanding how climate change may affect Cystoseira s.l. populations. Secondly, we design and experimentally test two new non-invasive restoration techniques for Cystoseira s.l. populations. In order to address the first goal, a manipulative thermo-tolerance experiment has been performed under controlled conditions to study the direct effects of temperature on Ericaria crinita at the individual-level. Moreover, in-situ observational ecological and environmental data have been analysed in order to elucidate how local factors may modulate between-population responses to MHWs. Finally, by means of another manipulative experiment under controlled conditions, we have characterized the thermo-tolerance of eight populations of Ericaria crinita coming from different thermal regimes. This information has then been combined with modelling approaches to forecast species response under a future climate scenario. Our results show that warming may severely impair the survival of Ericaria crinita, especially at early-life stages. Moreover, they suggest that local-scale environmental heterogeneity mediate population responses to MHWs highlighting the potential for local scale climatic refugia. Finally, we find intraspecific variability in the thermo-tolerance responses of Ericaria crinita, with populations from coldest areas being less tolerant. Our predictions show that such variability shapes species response to warming, which highlights its importance when forecasting species vulnerability under future climate change scenarios. Regarding the second objective, we have designed two restoration techniques based on obtaining new recruits (directly in situ and growing them ex-situ in laboratory conditions) from fertile branches of donor populations. We have also applied the designed techniques and we have established a mid-term monitoring program to assess the restoration success. Both techniques have resulted to be cost-effective to recover Gongolaria barbata populations after 6 years and with only one restoration action. In summary, our results show the potential effects of warming on populations of shallow Cystoseira s.l. species, pointing out the relevance of local environmental factors and processes ultimately defining the response of these populations to global trends of climate change. Moreover, we also offer new and promising tools to locally restore these habitats. Community structure and ecosystem functions are determined by physical and chemical conditions, food resources and biotic interactions. Mediterranean-climate streams are intrinsically variable in streamflow, with marked flow reduction in summer and floods in autumn and spring according to regional precipitation patterns. Riverine species are adapted to cope with natural and predictable disturbances, and their responses are in a large part determined by their physiological and behavioral adaptations. As for fish, swimming performance can determine their ability to use habitats differing in water velocity, to obtain food and avoid predation, etc. Today, the intense use of water by human demands causes longer low-flow periods in streams, thereby producing a certain degree of water stress. In addition, nutrient enrichment and water pollution are also common anthropogenic stressors that threaten ecological integrity of freshwater ecosystems. Metal pollution is of particular concern due to its high potential toxicity, perdurability and bioaccumulation through the food chain. At the bottom of the food chain, periphyton communities serve as food and energy sources for many organisms (e.g. macroinvertebrate grazers), so any stressor affecting periphyton is likely to indirectly affect organisms of a higher trophic level (“bottom-up control”). On the contrary, periphytic algal biomass can be affected by shifts in grazing pressure, e.g. resulting from predator-induced changes in grazer density (“top-down control”). Periphyton communities are also involved in important ecosystem functions (e.g. nutrient cycling), and are important bio indicators for habitat degradation. Field mesocosm experiments, from which we can modify the density of certain consumers (e.g. fishes), have become an invaluable tool in ecotoxicology and ecology for increasing mechanistic understanding of stressor effects. Our results showed that there exist a high intra-and interspecific variation in absolute critical swimming speed and metabolic traits in fish. Generally, swimming performance and aerobic metabolism scaled positively with body size. The study that compared the invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) with the native Spanish toothcarp (Aphanius iberus) revealed that mosquitofish can swim faster (i.e. higher critical swimming speed) and more efficiently than Spanish toothcarp, as it showed lower cost of transport at a comparable workload. Both sexes of mosquitofish showed a better hydrodynamic body shape, i.e. streamlined body and thiner caudal peduncle, both of which were positively correlated with swimming performance. The second study revealed that, after accounting for body size effects, critical swimming speed was independently affected by total length or maximal metabolic rate within certain fish species. At the interspecific level, variation in critical swimming speed was partly explained by the variation in the interrelated traits of maximal metabolic rate, and fineness and muscle ratios, when accounting for up to eight freshwater fish species. Field observational and mesocosm studies showed that the top-down control by grazers was largely responsible for the variation in structural responses of periphyton, such as biomass and nutrient content, and in functional responses, such as nutrient uptake rates. Generally, when grazer densities were higher the periphyton biomass (ash-free dry mass or chlorophyll-a) was lower, whereas the nitrogen content of periphyton increased (i.e. lower C:N). The higher phosphate uptake capacity by periphyton was likely due to a more rejuvenated and active periphyton community. In addition, the variation in macroinvertebrate and fish densities were directly related to the impacts of natural (floods) and anthropogenic stressors. In metal-polluted reaches, we found that direct negative effects of metals on grazers led to indirect positive effects on periphyton biomass. Our studies also provided evidence about the important functional role of the Mediterranean barbel (Barbus meridionalis) in streams because shifts in their densities can lead to large ecosystem changes. The absence of this predatory fish triggered trophic-cascade responses on periphyton biomass in low impacted streams, and led to modify phosphate uptake rates by periphyton through biotic interactions. On the contrary, this benthic fish markedly reduced periphyton biomass via bioturbation impacts, and the greatest consumption effects on macroinvertebrates were found in larvae of Chironomidae. Finally, it was discussed (i) the importance of fish swimming capabilities, metabolism and morphological traits in influencing patterns of species distributions in Mediterranean streams with hydrologic alterations; and (ii) the context dependency of stream community responses to anthropogenic stressors. A number of management actions and future research prospects in relation to our findings were also raised throughout this thesis.

Various climatic models predict an increase in the ultraviolet (UV) radiation and a reduction in the precipitation levels reaching in the Mediterranean Basin. Exposure of plants to different levels of UV radiation and water availability could cause alterations on their physiology, development, reproduction and litter decomposition. Hence, the main objective of this thesis is to study the effects of UV (UV-A and UV-B) radiation and water availability on different Mediterranean species. The results of this thesis suggest that the reproduction of E. scoparia plants, as well as the decomposition of the leaf litter of A. unedo and P. angustifolia, can be affected by the increase in UV radiation and the reduction in rainfall. Specifically, UV-B radiation and drought could reduce flower size. In addition, the increase in UV-B radiation and drought could also reduce the decomposition rates of leaf litter, while the increase in UV-A radiation might stimulate litter photodegradation Varios modelos climáticos, predicen que, en la Cuenca del Mediterráneo, se producirá un incremento en la radiación UV y se reducirá la precipitación. This thesis develops a quantitative approach to understanding and predicting the spatiotemporal distribution of biodiversity, based on a stochastic version of the theory of island biogeography. Here, I present R package ‘island’, that estimates colonization and extinction rates in a variety of temporal samplings, estimates the influence of the environment on these processes, and simulates temporal dynamics of the associated models. ‘island’ has been applied specially to microbial communities, but applies to any ecological community. This stochastic model is valuable as an effective model that summarizes the effects of dispersal, selection, drift, making easy the study of complex temporal dynamics. This thesis also emphasizes the importance of long-term research for obtaining new insights into community ecology and improve our understanding of the spatiotemporal distribution of biodiversity Esta tesis desarrolla una aproximación cuantitativa para entender y predecir la distribución en el tiempo y el espacio de la biodiversidad, basándose en una versión estocástica de la teoría de biogeografía de islas. Así, presenta el paquete de R ’island’ que estima tasas de colonización y extinción en una variedad de muestreos temporales, estima la influencia del ambiente sobre estos procesos, y simula la dinámica de los modelos asociados. ‘island’ se ha aplicado especialmente en comunidades microbianas, pero es aplicable de forma general. Esta versión estocástica es valiosa como un modelo efectivo que promedia los efectos de dispersión, selección y deriva, lo que facilita el manejo de dinámicas temporales complejas. We sampled the macrofaunal metacommunities in four networks of Mediterranean temporary ponds covering a wide range of pond sizes and different spatial extents. 1) In the smallest pond network, pond size was not related to any of the environmental factors and neither to community structure but had an effect on community composition. The effect of a high connectivity could explain the absence of differences in community structure. 2) Environmental distance had larger effects than spatial distance in the decay of community similarities. In the smaller network, the biotic groups showed different distance-decay patterns. In the larger network all the groups fit in the species sorting archetype. 3) We observed that centrality metrics affect regional and local pond biodiversity. Biodiversity metrics were not explained by environmental characteristics or centrality metrics alone, but through a combination of them. Regional biodiversity metrics showed similar patterns in all the networks, whereas local ones showed greater network-dependent patterns Se muestrearon las comunidades de macrofauna en cuatro redes de lagunas temporales mediterráneas que presentan un rango amplio de tamaños de lagunas y distintas extensiones espaciales. 1) En la red de lagunas más pequeña, el tamaño de la laguna no estaba relacionado con ninguno de los factores ambientales ni con la estructura de la comunidad pero sí tuvo efecto en la composición de la comunidad. El efecto de una alta conectividad podría explicar la ausencia de diferencias en la estructura de la comunidad. 2) La distancia ambiental produjo mayores efectos que la distancia espacial en la pérdida de similitud de las comunidades. En la red más pequeña, los grupos bióticos mostraron diferentes patrones de pérdida de similitud con la distancia. En la red más grande todos los grupos parecen encajar en el arquetipo de ‘filtro de las especies’. 3) Observamos que las métricas de centralidad afectaban a la biodiversidad regional y local. Las métricas de biodiversidad no se explicaban solo por las características ambientales o las métricas de centralidad sino por una combinación de ambas. Las métricas de biodiversidad regional mostraron patrones similares en todas las redes mientras que las locales mostraron patrones dependientes de la red

Salt marshes are considered key ecosystems for climate regulation because they have a high carbon sequestration capacity. However, most studies of carbon sequestration capacity of these ecosystems have been performed in tidal salt marshes, mainly in North America, being studies from non-tidal salt marshes, such as those of the Mediterranean Basin, really scarce. In this thesis it has been analyzed the amount of carbon stored in vegetation and soil, the fluxes of carbon dioxide in vegetation and the fluxes of carbon dioxide and methane in soil, as well as the litter decomposition of the dominant plant species in a non-tidal Mediterranean salt marsh. Results from this thesis contribute to increase the knowledge on carbon dynamics and litter decomposition in Mediterranean Basin salt marshes. Las marismas halófilas se consideran ecosistemas clave en la regulación climatica ya que presentan una alta capacidad de secuestro de carbono. Sin embargo, la mayoría de estudios sobre la capacidad de secuestro de carbono de estos ecosistemas se han realizado en marismas halófilas mareales, principalmente de Norte América, siendo escasos los estudios realizados en marismas no marelaes, como las de la cuenca de Mediterráneo. En esta tesis se ha analizado la cantidad de carbono almacenado en vegetación y suelo, los flujos de dióxido de carbono en vegetación y de dióxido de carbono y metano en suelo, así como la descomposición de la hojarasca de las especies vegetales dominantes en una marisma Mediterránea no mareal. Los resultados de esta tesis contribuyen a incrementar el conocimiento sobre la dinámica del carbono y la descomposición de la hojarasca en las marismas halófilas de la cuenca del Mediterráneo.

Currently, global change is promoting the spatiotemporal occurrence of temporary streams, altering fluvial ecosystem function and structure, and the ecosystem services they provide. To effectively protect fluvial ecosystems, a detailed understanding of the effects of hydrological regime changes on their biodiversity and functioning is needed. Organisms inhabiting temporary streams are directly affected by their hydrological regime, including the stream biofilm. Biofilms are associations of microorganisms and they are of particular relevance in temporary streams because of their diversity, abundance, and key role in ecosystem processes. Therefore, understanding biofilm response to hydrological regime variability is key to understand the implications of increasing non-flow periods on fluvial ecosystems. The results of this thesis demonstrate the non-flow duration as a key influence on the structure and functioning of river biofilms, the importance of maintaining photoautotrophic stream biodiversity to preserve stream ecosystems functioning and the protective role of canopy cover to protect these communities El canvi global està promovent l’aparició de rius intermitents, alterant funcionament, estructura i serveis ecosistèmics dels sistemes fluvials. Per a protegir efectivament els ecosistemes fluvials, es necessita un coneixement detallat dels efectes del canvi de règim hidrològic sobre la seva biodiversitat i funcionament. Els organismes que habiten els rius temporals estan directament afectats pels canvis hidrològics, inclòs el biofilm. Els biofilms són associacions de microorganismes i particularment rellevants als rius temporals per la seva diversitat, abundància i paper en processos ecosistèmics. Així, entendre la resposta del biofilm a la variabilitat del règim hidrològic és clau per entendre les implicacions del increment del període sec als ecosistemes fluvials. Els resultats d'aquesta tesi demostren la duració del període sec com a vector d'estructura i funcionament del biofilm, la importància de mantenir la biodiversitat fotoautòtrofa per preservar el funcionament ecosistèmic i el paper protector de la coberta vegetal sobre aquestes comunitats

During the last years, there has been an increase in the number and intensity of disturbances, and their consequences related with global change, which have corroborated the already forecasted scenarios. One example are wildfires, which are expected to increase both in intensity and extension in the near future. However, although the extensive research carried out to understand wildfire impacts, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding its consequences on freshwater temporary ponds. These temporary habitats constitute small biodiversity reservoirs, holding singular and iconic fauna. Nowadays, these habitats are endangered mostly due to habitat loss. Consequently, to cope with the future climatic scenario, which predicts an increase in wildfire disturbances as well as greater habitat loss, it becomes mandatory to better comprehend and study wildfire impacts on these small biodiversity jewels.Throghout this thesis I study the Jonquera wildfire consequences on the Albera temporary ponds Durant els últims anys, l’increment de pertorbacions lligades al context de canvi global està corroborant cada dia els pronòstics més negatius. En aquesta mateixa línia, i en relació a les pertorbacions d’abast regional com els incendis, les prediccions no fan res més que pronosticar-ne un augment, tant en la intensitat com en l’extensió. Tanmateix, tot i la gran quantitat de recerca sobre els impactes dels incendis se sap poc en relació al seu impacte sobre els estanys temporanis d’aigua dolça. Aquests, constitueixen un reservori de biodiversitat únic i molt valuós en les regions com la Mediterrània i actualment es troben greument amenaçats a causa de la seva desaparició. En conseqüència, davant de les futures perspectives climàtiques d’increment dels incendis i d’una major pèrdua d’habitat, esdevé cabdal conèixer quins són els impactes dels incendis sobre els estanys temporanis mediterranis. I used the metacommunity framework to dissect the relative influences of dispersal (in ecological and evolutionary timeframes), selection (driven by abiotic factors) and ecological drift on the assembly process of freshwater benthic communities. The study was carried out at 26-32 different stream segments within an area of about 40,000km2, in the Colombian Orinoco. The area encompasses an elevation gradient from 3400 to 300m a.s.l. and includes a heterogeneous assembly of ecoregions and landscapes. By using a pattern-matching approach, I provide evidences supporting that dispersal, selection and drift are directly involved in the assembly of freshwater benthic communities. My findings indicate that one or more events of dispersal limitation (i.e. allopatric isolation) in an evolutionary timeframe shaped distinct pools of taxa in the Orinoco basin. The extent of these pools partially matches the distribution of the ecoregions, suggesting that those events molding the riverscapes and the vegetation structure similarly affect the diversity and distribution of benthic species. These findings have implications for both basic and applied research in the disciplines of metacommunity and freshwater ecology as well as of conservation and biogeography En esta tesis, utilizo el marco conceptual de las metacomunidades para caracterizar los posibles efectos que tienen los procesos de dispersión (en tiempos ecológicos y evolutivos), selección (impulsada por factores abióticos) y deriva ecológica en la diversidad y distribución de las comunidades bentónicas fluviales. La zona de estudio, de un área de aproximadamente 40,000 km2, abarcó entre 26 y 32 segmentos de ríos prístinos del Orinoco colombiano. Los puntos de muestreo abarcaron un gradiente de elevación de 300 a 3400 m.s.n.m. que incluyó un conjunto heterogéneo de ecorregiones y paisajes. Mediante una aproximación de ligar patrones y posibles mecanismos, esta tesis proporciona evidencias de que la dispersión, la selección y la deriva están directamente involucradas en el proceso de ensamblaje de las comunidades bentónicas fluviales. Mis hallazgos indican que uno o más eventos de limitación de la dispersión en un marco de tiempo evolutivo (eventos de aislamiento alopátrico) formaron diferentes pools de especies dentro de la cuenca del Orinoco. La extensión de estos pools coincide parcialmente con la distribución de las ecorregiones, lo que sugiere que los eventos que moldearon los paisajes fluviales y la estructura de la vegetación afectaron de manera similar la diversidad y distribución de las especies bentónicas en ecosistemas fluviales. According to the Habitats Directive (92/43/ECC) a habitat is defined as “the terrestrial or aquatic area, whether entirely natural or semi-natural, differentiated by its geographical, biotic and abiotic characteristics, in which the species live in any state of their life cycle”. Moreover, according to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC), each member state has to characterize the diversity of its natural marine spaces by means of the habitats cartography, represented by their biotic characteristics and using appropriate classifications systems. In Catalonia, to fulfill these needs, an exhaustive cartography of the littoral habitats was carried out, characterizing and identifying them according to Corine Biotopes, EUNIS (European Nature Information System) classification and LPRE (Lista Patrón de los Hábitats Españoles) whether they grow over rocks, sand, gravel, pebbles or mud. The littoral zone can be divided into three levels: supralittoral (rarely submerged and usually affected by splash), mediolittoral (emerged and usually swept by the waves) and infralittoral (usually submerged). Organisms are distributed vertically following the humidity gradient and generating a gradual and continuous succession of different communities/habitats from the supralittoral level to the upper infralittoral level. Data derived from the characterization, identification and accurate cartography of coastal marine habitats on rocky shores along the Catalan coast, has allowed the development of this Doctoral Thesis that is divided into three main chapters, two of which have already been published in Scientific Journals Segons la Directiva Hàbitats (92/43/ECC) un hàbitat es defineix com “una àrea aquàtica o terrestre, tant natural com seminatural, diferenciada per les seves característiques geogràfiques, biòtiques i abiòtiques, on les espècies hi viuen en qualsevol etapa del seu cicle de vida”. A Catalunya, per complir amb aquests requeriments, es va realitzar una cartografia exhaustiva dels hàbitats litorals, caracteritzant-los i identificant-los segons els sistemes de classificació CORINE Biotopes, EUNIS (European Nature Information System) i LPRE (Lista Patrón de los Hábitats Españoles), tant si es presentaven sobre roca, sorra, graves, còdols o fangs. La zona litoral pot ser dividida en tres estatges: supralitoral (rarament submergit i afectat regularment pels esquitxos), mediolitoral (emergit i constantment remullat per les onades), i infralitoral (habitualment submergit). Els organismes es distribueixen verticalment seguint el gradient d’humitat, tot generant una successió contínua de diferents comunitats/hàbitats des de l’estatge supralitoral fins a la part superior de l’estatge infralitoral. The hay meadows in the Mediterranean region of Catalonia. Geobotanical characterisation, agri-environmental assessment, and study of the phytosociological relationships between hay meadows in Western Europe We locate and describe geobotanically and agro-environmentally the hay meadows in the Mediterranean region of Catalonia and the surrounding Central European region, one of the traditional crops with the greatest cultural, agricultural and natural interest of Catalonia. The text is structured into 5 chapters. 1. Introduction: We clarify and define nomenclatural aspects of the term “prats de dall” (hay meadow) and we explain the historical evolution of the meadow area in the Catalan Mediterranean region, from its origins to the present. 2. Mapping: We delimit the study area and describe the geobotanical characteristics of each inventory meadow. 3. Flora: We present the floral catalogue of the hay meadows in the study area (809 taxa, 17 are new for the flora of Catalonia). 4. Vegetation: We study the syntaxa of the study area geobotanically and compare them with the rest of the meadows in Western Europe. We analyze 211 syntaxa and characterize 80 (30 new). 5. Meadow management: We indicate the main agricultural and livestock techniques for maintaining, improving and restoring the hay meadows in the study area. Localitzem i descrivim geobotànicament i agroambientalment els prats de dall de la terra baixa catalana i de la muntanya mitjana adjacent, un dels cultius tradicionals amb més interès cultural, agrícola i natural de Catalunya. El text s’estructura en 5 capítols. 1. Introducció: aclarim aspectes nomenclaturals sobre el terme “prat de dall” i expliquem l’evolució històrica de la superfície pradenca a la regió mediterrània catalana, des dels seus orígens fins a l’actualitat. 2. Cartografia: delimitem l’àrea d’estudi i descrivim les característiques geobotàniques de cada prat inventariat. 3. Flora: presentem el catàleg florístic dels prats de l’àrea d’estudi (809 tàxons, 17 nous per a la flora de Catalunya). 4. Vegetació: estudiem geobotànicament els sintàxons de l’àrea d’estudi i els comparem amb la resta de prats de dall de l’Europa occidental. Analitzem 211 sintàxons i en caracteritzem 80 (30 nous). 5. Gestió pradenca: indiquem les principals tècniques agropecuàries per al manteniment, la millora i la restauració dels prats de dall de l’àrea d’estudi.

Exploited marine fish species with an affinity for cold waters inhabiting close to the warmer edge of their distribution area are exposed to stress caused by fishing and climate change. Three case studies of “cold water species” were selected (Argentina sphyraena, Micromesistius poutassou and Merluccius merluccius) and, in each case, various biological traits – including the factors regulating early oogenesis, reproductive tactics, physical condition, parasitism and energy allocation trade-offs – were examined. Overall, the main findings support the idea that species-specific biological traits and plasticity influence population’s sensitivity and response to external stressors. Mediterranean rivers are characterized by high hydrological variability and heterogeneity of habitats, placing themselves amongst arid and temperate climates, and are associated with high biological diversity. On the other hand, its high dependence on precipitation favours water needs for anthropogenic use to exceed availability, creating a scarcity scenario that 2/1 causes an increase in human pressure such as dam construction and pollution. This thesis aims to identify the effects produced by the regulation of the flow and the contamination for urban wastewater in the communities of the Mediterranean rivers. First the thesis analyses the effects of hydrological stability produced by a dam on the food web structure. Secondly, describe the effects of wastewater pollution on macroinvertebrate community, trophic efficiency transfer and food web niche Els rius mediterranis es caracteritzen per una alta variabilitat hidrològica i heterogeneïtat d’hàbitats, trobant-se a cavall entre els climes àrids i temperats, i estan associats a una alta diversitat biològica. Per contra, la seva gran dependència de la precipitació, propicia que les necessitats d’aigua per a ús antròpic superin la disponibilitat, creant un escenari d’escassetat que provoca un augment de les pressions humanes tals com la construcció de preses i la contaminació. Aquesta tesi te com a objectiu identificar els efectes produïts per la regulació del cabal i la contaminació per aigües residuals urbanes en les comunitats dels rius mediterranis. Human exploitation of river ecosystems, together with the increasing pressure that represents climate change, is posing rivers worldwide at risk. In rivers, microorganisms are ecologically very important. Most of these microorganisms are in close contact with river substratum, where they form a 2/1 jelly layer known as biofilm. There is an urgent need to evaluate the effects of these so-called “stressors” (that is, toxic chemicals, water warming, desiccation...) on river biofilms. This thesis used artificial streams to evaluate the individual and combined effects of multiple stressors on river biofilms. The results indicate that desiccation is the main stressor, and that river biofilm components (bacteria, algae) can adapt to combined stress conditions only partially, showing altered ecological functions such as oxygen production, and degradation of organic matter L’explotació dels ecosistemes fluvials per part dels humans, així com la creixent amenaça que representa el canvi climàtic, posa els rius arreu del món en risc. Als rius, els microorganismes son ecològicament molt importants. Als rius, la majoria d’aquests microorganismes es troben situats en contacte directe amb el substrat, on formen una capa mucilaginosa coneguda com a biofilm. És urgent avaluar els efectes dels anomenats “estressors” (incloent- hi compostos químics, l’augment de temperatura de l’aigua, o la sequera...) en els biofilms de riu. En aquesta tesi s’han usat rius artificials per avaluar l’efecte individual i combinat d’estressors múltiples en biofilm de riu. Els resultats indiquen que la sequera és l’estressor més important, i que els diferents components del biofilm (bacteris, algues) poden adaptar-se a la presència combinada d’estressors només parcialment, ja que mostres alteracions en funcions ecològiques com la producció d’oxigen, i la degradació de matèria orgànica

The sessile oak Quercus petraea is widespread in Central Europe. The populations in the NE Iberian Peninsula are at the southernmost limit of the species range, in the most Mediterranean-type conditions and at the xeric limit. The results of study show that the community species composition has been altered since the second half of the 20th century, but in slightly different ways in each region. The sessile oak forest is recovering from the change in forest use, and the Montseny Massif is the best example of this dynamic. For some oak forests, however, such as those in the Montnegre natural park, climate change poses an uncertain future. For this reason, it is important to take advantage of natural refuges of these species as reservoirs and places where the habitat can be preserved El roure de fulla gran Quercus petraea és àmpliament present a centre Europa. Les poblacions del NE de la Península Ibèrica es trobarien al seu límit meridional de distribució i les de condicions més mediterrànies en el xeric limit per aquesta espècie. Els resultats de la tesi, mostren que la comunitat ha canviat la seva composició d’espècies des de la segona meitat del s. XX, però de forma sensiblement diferent segons cada regió. La dinàmica de les rouredes de roure de fulla gran és, doncs, la de recuperació del canvi dels usos del bosc, i el Montseny és bon exemple d’aquest procés; però, en canvi, per algunes rouredes com les del Montnegre, el canvi climàtic presenta un futur incert. Per aquest motiu és important aprofitar les localitats que es troben en refugis naturals com a reservoris i punts on poder conservar aquest hàbitat

Hydrological drought is a process of natural desiccation mainly due to large shortage of rainfall events. Reduced precipitations and prolonged droughts are spreading worldwide and threaten the integrity of aquatic ecosystems. Most Mediterranean streams have an intermittent flow which may become more variable and with larger duration of their no-flow periods under climate change. The enlargement of the dry period can importantly influence the ecosystem functioning, altering the microbiota inhabiting the streambed sediment as well as the processes they carry out (e.g. nutrients cycling). Consequently, hydrological alterations can reduce, limit or change microbial community functions, structure and composition, and therefore compromise the overall aquatic ecosystem functioning. The main objectives of this thesis are to study the responses of bacteria archaea and fungi inhabiting sediment to prolonged dry phase events and to wet episodes, spacing from punctual rains to rewetting events La sequía hidrológica es un proceso de desecación natural debido principalmente a la gran escasez de eventos de lluvia. Las precipitaciones reducidas y las sequías prolongadas se están extendiendo por todo el mundo y amenazan la integridad de los ecosistemas acuáticos. La mayoría de las corrientes mediterráneas tienen un flujo intermitente que puede volverse más variable y con una mayor duración de sus períodos sin flujo bajo el cambio climático. La ampliación del período seco puede influir de manera importante en el funcionamiento del ecosistema, alterando la microbiota que habita en el sedimento fluvial, así como los procesos que llevan a cabo (por ejemplo, el ciclo de nutrientes). En consecuencia, las alteraciones hidrológicas pueden reducir, limitar o cambiar las funciones, la estructura y la composición de la comunidad microbiana y, por lo tanto, comprometer el funcionamiento general del ecosistema acuático. Phenotypic plasticity is the adaptive response of a genotype to presenting different types of phenotypes in response to environmental changes. These adaptive responses can contribute to a particular species being able to occupy a particular habitat or habitats and thus expand its range. This thesis studies some aspects of the mechanisms of invasion, establishment and expansion of the invasive species Alburnus alburnus in different basins of the Iberian Peninsula and provide more information for a better understanding of its biology and mechanisms of invasion. On the other hand, it also aims to compare the morphology, metabolism and critical swimming speed of two fartet populations, one captive and one wild and to use this information to apply it to captive breeding programs and improve the management of reintroductions of captive-bred individuals into their natural habitat La plasticitat fenotípica és la resposta adaptativa d’un genotip a presentar diferents tipus de fenotips en resposta a canvis ambientals. The microbial metacommunity of the Pyrenees mountain range has never been studied at the regional level. In this PhD thesis, the main goal is to describe the taxonomic diversity and reveal the ecological processes (biotic and abiotic) behind the spatial distribution and heterogeneity of surface communities of alpine lakes. With a sampling of more than 300 lakes during summer of 2011 and high-througput sequencing of ribosomal markers (16S and 18S rRNA), we analized the microbial profiles of archaeal, bacterial and eukaryotic communities. We highlighted the discovery and description of novel and unknown lineages such as Pacearchaeota or Woesearchaeota (Archaea) or Chytridiomycota (Eukarya). We analyzed the role of environmental filtering and dispersal processes, as well as potential species interactions as drivers of local community assemblages La metacomunidad microbiana de Pirineos nunca ha sido estudiada a nivel de región completa. En esta tesis se busca describir la diversidad taxonómica y revelar los procesos ecológicos (bióticos y abióticos) que pueden estar tras la distribución espacial y la heterogeneidad de las comunidades superficiales de lagos alpinos. Mediante un muestreo de más de 300 lagos durante el verano de 2011 y técnicas de secuenciación masiva de genes ribosómicos (16S y 18S rRNA) se obtuvieron los perfiles microbianos de comunidades de arqueas, bacterias y eucariotas. Se puso énfasis en el descubrimiento y descripción de linajes nóveles y desconocidos como Pacearchaeota o Woesearchaeota (Archaea) o Chytridiomycota (Eukarya). Based on the current knowledge about biofilm ecotoxicology and arsenic biogeochemistry in freshwater ecosystems, this thesis studied, under realistic environmental concentrations, i) the role of benthic biofilms in the bioavailability and detoxification of arsenic, ii) the toxic effects of Arsenic on the structure and function of river benthic biofilms, paying special attention to the responses of diatoms, and iii) the interaction between these primary producers and higher organisms such as fish, exposed to arsenic. Arsenic inhibited algal growth, with diatoms being adapted by a significant reduction in cell biovolume (chapter 1). The biofilm aggravated the effects of arsenic on fish (chapter 2) but was also able to detoxify through methylation of inorganic arsenic species (chapter 3). The results of this thesis provide valuable information to understand the contribution of biofilms to biogeochemistry and arsenic toxicity in freshwater systems., Basándonos en los conocimientos actuales sobre la ecotoxicología del biofilm y la biogeoquímica del arsénico en ecosistemas dulceacuícolas, esta tesis estudió, bajo concentraciones ambientales realistas, i) el papel de los biofilms bentónicos en la biodisponibilidad y destoxificación del arsénico, ii) los efectos tóxicos del arsénico sobre la estructura y función de los biofilms bentónicos fluviales, prestando especial atención a las respuestas de las diatomeas, y iii) la interacción entre estos productores primarios y organismos superiores como los peces, expuestos a arsénico. El arsénico inhibió el crecimiento algal, pudiendo las diatomeas adaptarse mediante una significativa reducción de su biovolumen celular (capítulo 1). El biofilm agravó los efectos del arsénico en peces (capítulo 2) pero también fue capaz de destoxificar metilando especies inorgánicas de arsénico (capítulo 3). Taking into account the expected changes in solar UV levels, precipitation and fire regime in the Mediterranean basin, the main goal of this thesis was to evaluate the effects of UV radiation (UV-A and UV-B) and diminished water availability on the biochemical, morphological, physiological and growth 2/2 traits of common Mediterranean resprouter species (Arbutus unedo and Quercus suber), as well as on C and N pools of a Mediterranean shrubland, before and after a perturbation. As main results, responses of A. unedo plants to enhanced UV-B were mainly addressed to the reinforcement of the antioxidant machinery, while Q. suber augmented UV-screening capacity to face UV-B enhancement. At ecosystem level, UV-A and UV-B had opposite effects on soil processes related to C and N cycles, and these effects were often emphasized under reduced precipitation. In addition, the responses observed in plants and soil were different before and after the perturbation, Considerando los cambios esperados en los niveles de UV solar, precipitación y régimen de incendios en la región mediterránea, esta tesis evalúa los posibles efectos de la radiación UV (UV-A y UV-B) y la disminución de la disponibilidad hídrica sobre parámetros bioquímicos, morfológicos, fisiológicos y de crecimiento de especies rebrotadoras mediterráneas (Arbutus unedo y Quercus suber), así como sobre los niveles de C y N de un matorral mediterráneo, antes y después de una perturbación. Como resultados principales, A. unedo respondió al aumento en UV-B reforzando la maquinaria antioxidante, mientras que Q. suber aumentó su capacidad para bloquear esta radiación. In river networks, dissolved organic matter (DOM) constitutes the major pool of organic carbon, and plays a key role as energy source and modulator of toxic substances availability. In this thesis, Joan P. Casas-Ruiz and collaborators provide new insights into the controls on DOM processing, and into how in-stream reactions and changing DOM sources modulate DOM dynamics in river networks. To attain this, the quantity and composition of DOM were evaluated across a river network throughout a full hydrological year. The results compiled in this thesis pose water residence time as the main regulator of DOM processing, while DOM properties as well as nutrient availability determine the net balance of in-stream degradation and production of DOM. A network-scale analysis identifies a pattern of DOM concentration and chemical diversity with maxima in medium-sized rivers, and the same pattern emerges upon analysis of a global data set. On the basis of these results, this thesis proposes a conceptual framework to comprehend and predict the spatiotemporal dynamics of riverine DOM, La matèria orgànica dissolta (DOM) constitueix la major reserva de carboni orgànic en els sistemes fluvials, on també hi juga un paper clau com a font d'energia i modulador de la disponibilitat de substàncies tòxiques. Cases-Ruiz i col•laboradors pretenen identificar els controls de processament DOM, i entendre com la combinació de reaccions in situ i canvis en les fonts de DOM modulen les dinàmiques de la DOM fluvial. Per tal d'assolir-ho, es van evaluar la quantitat i composició de la DOM en una xarxa fluvial al llarg d'un any hidrològic complet. Els resultats recopilats en aquesta tesi assenyalen el temps de residència de l'aigua com el principal regulador de processament de la DOM, mentre que les propietats intrínsiques de la DOM, així com la disponibilitat de nutrients determinen el balanç net de degradació i producció de la DOM. Una anàlisi a escala de xarxa fluvial identifica un patró de concentració i diversitat química de la DOM amb màxims en els rius de mida mitjana. En base a aquests resultats, aquesta tesi proposa un marc conceptual per comprendre i predir les dinàmiques espacials i temporals de la DOM fluvial

Autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms are two essential functional units in the microbial food web of aquatic ecosystems. They play a key role in nutrient cycling and carbon flow and influence the structure, composition and dynamics of aquatic food webs. In shallow lakes, the hydrological pattern is one of the most important factors that determine the availability of nutrients and the functional composition of the microbial community, and therefore the dominant trophic strategy in the microbial food web. L'objectiu d'aquesta tesi és de'explorar alguns aspectes de l'impacte humà sobre les poblacions de peixos i altres components dels ecosistemes fluvials Mediterranis de Catalunya. Es va mostrar com els peixos del Riu Llobregat acumulen quantitats significatives de metalls pesants, amb concentracions en el múscul que varien al llarg del riu i segons l'espècie i la talla dels peixos. En el Riu Tordera, afectat per l'extracció d'aigua, el règim de temperatures es veu alterat en correspondència dels trams intermitents, en els quals la probabilitat de supervivència i l'abundancia dels peixos , i en menor mesura el creixement i la condició corpòria, també pateixen les conseqüencies de l'alteració hidrològica, The goal of this thesis is to explore some aspects of anthropogenic impact on the fish populations and other components of two Mediterranean stream ecosystems in Catalonia NE Spain). It was shown how Llobregat River's fish accumulate significant trace metal quantities, with muscle concentrations varying across sampling sites along the river, fish species and size. In the Tordera Stream, affected by water abstraction, the temperature regime was disrupted in correspondence of the intermittent reaches, where fish abundance and survival probability and, at a lower extent, growth and body condition, also suffered the consequences of hydrologic alteration

The main aims of this thesis are: i) to evaluate arsenic toxicity in two major, interacting components of the freshwater ecosystem, biofilm and fish, to provide information on environmentally realistic exposures and on biotic interactions, such as nutrient cycling that modulate toxicity; and ii) to rank predictors of toxicity to fish and quantify the differences in sensitivity among fish species. Our results highlight the interest and application of incorporating some of the complexity of natural systems in ecotoxicology and highlights that the current criterion continuous concentration for arsenic should be updated. We examined the factors that best predict toxicity in a set of widespread fishes using the random forest technique and assessed the importance of differential sensitivity among fish species using analyses of covariance. Our result indicates that caution should be exercised when extrapolating toxicological results since fish species differ in sensitivity and respond differently to different chemicals., Los principales objetivos de esta tesis doctoral son: i) evaluar la toxicidad del arsénico en dos elementos clave que interactúan en el ecosistema acuático, biofilm y peces, para proporcionar información sobre los efectos de niveles de contaminación realistas a nivel ambiental y sus interacciones con otros factores que modulan la toxicidad, tales como el reciclado de los nutrientes; y ii) clasificar predictores de toxicidad para los peces y cuantificar las diferencias de sensibilidad entre las especies. Nuestros resultados ponen de manifiesto el interés y la aplicación de la incorporación de algunas de las complejidades de los sistemas naturales en ecotoxicología y destaca que el criterio actual de concentración continua para el arsénico debe ser actualizada. Se examinaron los factores que mejor predicen la toxicidad en un conjunto amplio de peces utilizando la técnica denominada “Random Forests” y se evaluó la importancia de la sensibilidad diferencial entre las especies de peces utilizando el análisis de la covarianza. Nuestro resultado indica que se debe tener precaución al extrapolar los resultados toxicológicos ya que las especies de peces difieren en la sensibilidad y responden de manera diferente a diferentes productos químicos.

En aquesta tesi es van descriure els principals fons algals del detrític costaner de la plataforma continental de Mallorca i Menorca (illes Balears, Espanya), i es van proposar mètodes efectius per al seu mostreig tant a nivell de paisatge com de comunitat. Així, en primer lloc, es van identificar i caracteritzar sis paisatges algals principals a partir de les mostres recol·lectades mitjançant l’arrossegament de fons, que permet mostrejos en àrees extenses. Seguidament, es van descriure algunes de les comunitats presents en aquests paisatges (maërl de Spongites fruticulosus, bosc de Laminaria rodriguezii i llit de Peyssonnelia inamoena) a partir de mostres obtingudes amb la draga Box-Corer i el patí epibentònic, que permeten mostrejos en àrees més reduïdes que l’arrossegament de fons. Finalment, la comparació qualitativa de dades pròpies i d’altres publicades en la bibliografia va permetre avaluar la composició i la distribució de les comunitats dominades per macroalgues dels fons detrítics del Mediterrani i l’Atlàntic Nord-oriental., This thesis aims to describe the main algal-dominated coastal detritic bottoms of the continental shelf off Mallorca and Menorca (Balearic Islands, Spain), and provide effective methods for their sampling. Firstly, six main algal assemblages were identified and characterized thanks to the samples collected by means of bottom trawl, as it allows sampling in extensive areas. Moreover, the description of some communities that characterized some of the algal assemblages (maërl of Spongites fruticulosus, Laminaria rodriguezii forest and Peyssonnelia inamoena bed) were performed with samples obtained with the Box-Corer dredge and the beam trawl, which allowed sampling on smaller areas than bottom trawl. Finally, the qualitative comparison of our own data and data from published studies allowed to assess the composition and the distribution of the macroalgal-dominated communities of the coastal detritic bottoms from the Mediterranean and the Northeastern Atlantic.

This PhD thesis evaluates the links between parasitism, condition and reproduction of mature female individuals of three of the most captured fish species in the western Mediterranean Sea: European hake, Merluccius merluccius; red mullet, Mullus barbatus, and European anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus. Indicators of fish energy reserves (total lipid content in liver, muscle and gonads) and reproductive capacity (fecundity and egg quality) were evaluated, as were the prevalence and intensity of infection by metazoan parasites. By evaluating these relationships, this thesis also provides essential data on the health and reproduction of these three fish species, such as the spawning strategy., La present tesi doctoral avalua els vincles entre parasitisme, condició i reproducció en femelles adultes de tres de les espècies més capturades a la Mediterrània occidental: el lluç europeu, Merluccius merluccius; el roger de fang, Mullus barbatus, i el seitó, Engraulis encrasicolus. Amb aquesta finalitat, es varen avaluar els indicadors de les reserves energètiques (contingut total de lípids en el fetge, musculatura i gònades) i la capacitat reproductiva (fecunditat i qualitat de la posta), així com la prevalença i intensitat de la infestació per paràsits metazous.Paral·lelament a l’anàlisi d’aquestes relacions, aquesta tesi també proporciona dades essencials sobre la salut i reproducció d’aquestes tres espècies, com per exemple l’estratègia reproductiva.

Wildfires are natural perturbations that affect the structure of the landscape and biodiversity. In the Mediterranean basin, wildfires occur especially in hot seasons. However, in recent years the number of fires with the size of them has been increasing, associated with human intervention. In this thesis, I analyse how the gradient of regional aridity in Catalonia affects the recovery of vegetation, the richness of bird species and shrubland warbler abundance. The relative role of two hypotheses on the abundance of rodents in the first moments after a wildfire is evaluated. These opposite hypotheses make reference to the ability of rodents to resist the fire into refuges or, on the other hand, to colonize burnt areas from the unburnt area. Finally, I study how the postfire and the management of burnt wood can affect the recolonization of rodents, Els incendis forestals són alteracions naturals que afecten l'estructura del paisatge i la biodiversitat. A la conca mediterrània, els incendis forestals es donen especialment en les estacions caloroses. Tanmateix, en els darrers anys tant el nombre d’incendis con la mida dels mateixos ha anat en augment, associat amb la intervenció humana. En aquesta tesi s’analitza com el gradient d'aridesa regional de Catalunya afecta a la recuperació de la vegetació, la riquesa d'espècies d'aus i l’abundància de tallarols de matollar. S’avalua el paper relatiu de dues hipòtesis sobre l'abundància de rosegadors en els primers moments després d'un incendi forestal. Aquestes hipòtesis contraposades fan referència a la capacitat dels rosegadors a resistir el pas del foc en refugis o, per altre banda, a la colonitzar des de l'àrea no cremada. Finalment, s’avalua com la tala postincendi i la gestió de la fusta cremada poden afectar la recolonització de rosegadors

Occurrence, fate, and adverse effects of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment have become a matter of concern, since these compounds have been persistently detected in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents, surface water, seawater and groundwater all over the globe. The incessant release of emerging contaminants into freshwater ecosystems could affect a broad variety of organisms: from bacterial communities to fish, as well as aquatic plants and insect larvae. The present thesis aimed to investigate the potential bioaccumulation and biomagnification of two groups of emerging contaminants − pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors − in aquatic biota, including fish, invertebrates and river biofilm in the natural environment. A second aim of this thesis was to evaluate the impacts of exposure to some of these contaminants in the organisms, and the possible relation between bioaccumulation and toxicological effects., La presència, destí i efectes adversos dels contaminants emergents en el medi aquàtic s’han convertit en un tema de preocupació general ja que, aquests compostos, s’han estat detectant de manera persistent en els efluents de les Estacions Depuradores d’Aigües Residuals (EDAR) així com en aigües superficials, marines i subterrànies de tot el planeta. La constant presència de contaminants emergents en el medi aquàtic continental podria afectar a una gran varietat d’organismes: des de comunitats bacterianes fins a peixos, així com a plantes aquàtiques i larves d’insectes. El primer objectiu d’aquesta tesi doctoral és investigar la potencial bioacumulació i biomagnificació de dos grups de contaminants emergents –fàrmacs i disruptors¬ endocrins– en la biota aquàticaincloent peixos, invertebrats i biofilm. El segon objectiu és avaluar els possibles impactes que l’exposició a aquests contaminants poden tenir en els organismes i establir la possible correlació entre bioacumulació i efectes toxicològics.

River sediments are composed by a variety of grain sizes which determine their permeability and biogeochemistry. The aim of this thesis was to test whether differences in river sediment physical characteristics generate differences in biofilm biomass and metabolic activity in a Mediterranean river. To this aim, formulae for estimating hydraulic conductivity were reviewed, and the relationship between sediment grain-size distribution and microbial biomass, and microbial metabolism depth gradients were analyzed. Results suggest selecting the Kozany-Carman formula to estimate hydraulic conductivity for Tordera sandy sediments. Sediment physical properties affected accumulation of organic matter, chlorophyll-a and bacteria but this effect was different depending on hydrological events and microbial group considered; bacteria being the most affected. Microbial activities in sediment depth were regulated by the permeability of streambeds through organic compounds contributing to microbial activities. Hydraulic conductivity is among the most important physical factors driving biogeochemical dynamics and microbial processes at Tordera river, Els sediments fluvials es component d’una varietat de mides de gra que determinen la seva permeabilitat i biogeoquímica. L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi era testar si les diferències en les característiques físiques del sediment generen diferències en la biomassa i l’activitat metabòlica del biofilm en un riu mediterrani. Per aquest objectiu, es revisaren diverses fórmules per a estimar la conductivitat hidràulica i s’analitzà: la relació entre la distribució de mides de gra del sediment amb la biomassa microbiana i, el metabolisme microbià en un gradient de profunditat del sediment. Els resultats suggeriren seleccionar la fórmula de Kozany-Carman per a estimar la conductivitat hidràulica dels sediments sorrencs del riu Tordera. Les característiques físiques del sediment afectaren l’acumulació de matèria orgànica, clorofil·la i bacteris però aquest efecte fou diferent en funció del període hidrològic i del grup microbià, sent els bacteris els més afectats. Les activitats microbianes en profunditat eren regulades per la permeabilitat del sediment. Fisheries are complex systems, in which the process of assessment and management should explicitly consider the ecological, social and economic attributes of the system. For a responsible and sustainable management of marine resources and their interaction with the fishing activity, both, managers and scientists, are necessary. The multidimensional view of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM:) provides the most suitable context for managing small-scale fisheries, promoting-the participation of all members of society linked to the fishing activity, as co-management is a key factor in their development. In Catalonia, the fishermen guild of the port of Palam6s is one of the most important in the region of Baix Emporda and holds ample historical record of local fishing activity information. This PhD dissertation applies the information from the fishermen guild of the port of Palam6s, through a vision of EAFM:, considering fisheries as a socio-economic unit (systemic approach), but also as different ecosystem components representing different levels of the hierarchy on the biological organization (communities and individual species). From a systemic context, the use of the Living Planet Index (LPI) is proposed to describe the fishe:r:y dynamics in order to assess the performance of the fishery targeted by the fishermen guild of Palam6s, analyzing simultaneously the degree of compliance with the objectives of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. The LPI index is suitable for multi-specific fisheries using different fishing strategies as the small­scale fisheries of the Palam6s port. At the level of the biological communities and through a network approach, potential management units were identified based on the analysis of by-catch, thus incorporating non-target species. According to the characteristics of each module, at least some of these could be considered management units not evident using a different approach. Finally, the effects of SSF were evaluated on a commercial interest species, Pagellus erythrinus. In that sense, it has been re-evaluated the reproductive cycle by means of an histological approach, various population parameters were estimated and the vulnerability of this species in relation to the activities of SSF was evaluated, in an attempt to show a practical application of the third hierarchical management level, that must be considered in an ecosystem approach to fisheries on the biological strategy of the species, since species individually, respond differently to different types of fishing pressure and any management carried out considering all the species as a whole, would probably fail., Les pesqueres constitueixen sistemes complexos, en el quals el procés d'avaluació i gestió hauria de considerar explícitament els atributs ecològics, socials i econòmics del sistema. Per aconseguir una gestió responsable i sostenible del recursos marins és necessària la interacció de pescadors, gestors i científics. La visió multi-dimensional de l'Enfocament Ecosistémic de la Pesca (EEP) proporciona el context general més adequat per a la gestió de pesqueres a petita escala. El EEP promou la participació de tots els membres de la sacietat relacionats amb l'activitat pesquera, i per tant la cogestió és un element clau per al seu desenvolupament. A Catalunya, la Confraria del port de Palamós és una de les més importants de la regió del Baix Empordà i compta amb un ampli registre històric d' informació pesquera local. En aquesta tesi s'avalua com maximitzar l'ús de la informació provinent de la Confraria del part de Palamós, a través d'una visió d' EEP considerant a la pesquera com una unitat socioeconòmica (enfocament sistèmic) però també considerant els diferents components de l'ecosistema, representant diferents nivells de la jerarquia de l'organització biològica (com u ni ta ts i espècies individuals). En un context sistèmic, es proposa l'ús de l'Índex Planeta Viu (LPI per les seves sigles en anglès) per descriure la dinàmica pesquera, de Palamós, simultàniament analitzant el grau d'acompliment dels objectius d'Aichi Biodiversitat. Aquest índex, és adequat per pesqueres multi-específiques que fan servir diverses estratègies de pesca, com és el cas la pesca artesanal de Palamós. A nivell de comunitats biològiques, i través d'un enfocament de xarxes es van identificar possibles unitats de gestió, partint de l'anàlisi del descart, i incorporant d'aquesta manera les espècies no objectiu. D'acord a les característiques de cada mòdul, alguns podrien ser considerats com a unitats de gestió, fins ara no evidents com a tals eines de gestió. Finalment es van avaluar els efectes de la pesca a petita escala sobre una espècie d'interès comercial, Pagellus erythrinus. En aquest sentit, es va revaluar el cicle reproductiu a través d'una anàlisi histològica, es van estimar diversos paràmetres poblacionals i es va avaluar la vulnerabilitat d'aquesta espècie en relació a les activitats de la pesca artesanal. Aquest exemple pretén demostrar que l'estratègia biològica de l'espècie, és el tercer nivell jeràrquic que cal tenir present en un enfoc ecosistèmic de la pesca, atès que les espècies, individualment, responen de manera diferent als diferents tipus de pesca i a la pressió, i qualsevol gestió que es van estimar diversos paràmetres poblacionals i es va avaluar la vulnerabilitat d'aquesta espècie en relació a les activitats de la pesca artesanal. Aquest exemple pretén demostrar que l'estratègia biològica de l'espècie, és el tercer nivell jeràrquic que cal tenir present en un enfoc ecosistèmic de la pesca, atès que les espècies, individualment, responen de manera diferent als diferents tipus de pesca i a la pressió, i qualsevol gestió que es dugui a terme considerant les espècies com un conjunt, fracassarà.

A direct consequence of sea warming in the Mediterranean is a increase in the abundance of thermo-tolerant species fish species such as Sphyraena viridensis, Pomadasys incisus, Pomatomus saltatrix and Trachinotus ovatus. The results of this thesis indicated that different thermal-related biological responses may exist depending on the species, which in turn strengthens the claim that temperature plays a key role in regulating the physiology of fishes, especially in those warm-water species spreading northwards. Climate change is at least partly responsible for the northward spread and increasing abundance of warm-water species, and their physiological adaptations to the rising sea temperatures might indeed be playing an important role in the establishment into areas these thermophilic fauna did not previously occupy., Una consecuencia directa del calentamiento del mar Mediterráneo es un aumento de la abundancia de especies termotolerantes como Sphyraena viridensis, Pomadasys incisus, Pomatomus saltatrix y Trachinotus ovatus. Los resultados de esta tesis indican que pueden existir diferentes respuestas biológicas relacionadas con la temperatura dependiendo de la especie, lo que a su vez refuerza la idea de que la temperatura juega un papel clave en la regulación de la fisiología de los peces, especialmente en aquellas especies de agua cálidas que se están expandiendo hacia el norte. El cambio climático es al menos en parte responsable de la propagación hacia el norte y el aumento de la abundancia de especies de aguas cálidas en el Mar Mediterráneo, y que sus adaptaciones fisiológicas al incremento de la temperatura del mar podrían de hecho estar jugando un papel importante en el establecimiento de ésta fauna termófila en zonas que no ocupan previamente.

This work investigated the effect of global change phenomena, particularly land use and climatic changes, on water quality patterns in Mediterranean rivers. A hybrid process-based and statistical model (SPARROW) was applied to a largely disturbed Mediterranean basin (NE Spain) to estimate annual nitrate 2/2 and phosphate loads. The model emphasized the contribution of in-stream processes in nutrient retention and the inter-annual effects of hydrological variability on nutrient export. Dynamic Factor Analysis (DFA) was used to detect common patterns at the basin scale. The application of complementary methods allowed the detection of signatures of environmental change on water quality patterns in three Mediterranean basins. The spatio-temporal variability of nitrate concentration made a clear distinction among sites that had a relationship with hydrology and sites where other processes (e.g. phenology-related) prevailed. Conversely, the variability of phosphate concentration was more complex and some sites were underrepresented by the extracted common patterns., Este trabajo buscó investigar el efecto del cambio global, particularmente los cambios de usos de suelo y climáticos, en los patrones de cualidad del agua en ríos mediterráneos. Un modelo estadístico-mecanicista fue aplicado a una cuenca Mediterránea para estimar cargas anuales de nitrato y fosfato. El modelo hizo énfasis en la contribución de los procesos de río en la retención de nutrientes y en los efectos de la variabilidad hidrológica en la exportación de nutrientes. El análisis factorial dinámico y métodos complementarios permitieron la detección y atribución de cambios ambientales en patrones de calidad del agua en tres cuencas mediterráneas. La variabilidad espacio-temporal de la concentración de nitratos hizo una clara distinción entre sitios que tenían una relación con la hidrología y sitios donde procesos fenológicos prevalecieron. Por el contrario, la variabilidad de la concentración de fosfato fue más compleja y algunos sitios fueron insuficientemente representados por los patrones extraídos.

This thesis studied the principal environmental controlling factors and microbial mechanisms involved in leaf litter decomposition in Mediterranean intermittent streams. Additionally, drought disturbance in both Mediterranean intermittent and Atlantic permanent streams was also evaluated. At the Mediterranean intermittent stream leaf litter decomposition varied mainly related to seasonal variations in temperature, conductivity and current velocity. Drought clearly affected microbial assemblages and functioning in these ecosystems although this did not resulted in changes on breakdown rates. In permanent streams drought disturbance also affected microbial activity and structure, reducing breakdown velocity due to emersion of leaves. Microbial communities from nutrient enriched streams were more resistant to drought disturbance. Results suggest that under more extreme environmental variation and dry conditions expected with the global change, microbial decomposers will be severely affected. However consequences in carbon recycling will depend on to the type of drought-related disturbance, interaction with other stressors and previous communities dwelling in., En aquesta tesi s’han estudiat els factors ambientals determinants i els mecanismes microbians involucrats en la descomposició de fullaraca en rius intermitents mediterranis. També s’ha avaluat l’efecte de la sequera en rius intermitents mediterranis i permanents atlàntics. En el riu intermitent mediterrani la descomposició de fullaraca s’ha vist afectada per la variació anual de la temperatura, conductivitat i velocitat de la corrent. La sequera clarament va determinar canvis en els microorganismes descomponedors i el seu funcionament en ambdós tipus de rius, malgrat no sempre va afectar la velocitat de descomposició. Els resultats suggereixen que en condicions extremes de variació ambiental i sequera, esperats pel canvi global, els microorganismes descomponedors de la fullaraca es veuran molt afectats. No obstant, les conseqüències en el reciclatge de carboni dependran del tipus de pertorbació relacionada amb la sequera, de la interacció amb altres impactes i de les comunitats descomponedores prèvies que habiten al riu.

La pesca recreativa és una de les activitats turístiques més practicades a les zones costaneres arreu del món, implicant a un gran nombre de persones i per tant una pressió sobre els recursos gens menyspreable, especialment en àrees marines protegides (AMPs). El volum d’extracció de la pesca recreativa pot ser igual o inclús superior al de la pesca comercial en determinats casos i ambdues pesques poden tenir efectes biològics i ecològics similars sobre les poblacions de peixos i els ecosistemes marins. S’estima que al voltant del 10% de la població adulta dels països desenvolupats practica aquesta activitat i, tot i que a la mar Mediterrània la pesca recreativa és particularment important (representa més del 10% de la producció total de les pesqueries), no està tan controlada ni estudiada com la pesca professional. Aquesta tesi doctoral pretén avaluar els diferents impactes biològics i les característiques socioeconòmiques de la pesca recreativa en les àrees costaneres de la Mediterrània, especialment a les AMPs (que constitueixen una eina de gestió important en la conservació de la biodiversitat i dels recursos marins). Els resultats permeten establir una sèrie de recomanacions per a l’estudi, gestió i educació ambiental d’aquesta activitat., Recreational fishing is one of the most popular activities carried out by tourists in coastal areas all over the world. It involves a great number of people; therefore, the pressure on resources is significant, especially in marine protected areas (MPAs). In certain cases, the volume extracted by recreational fishing can be the same or even higher than that extracted by commercial fishing and both types of fishing can have similar biological and ecological effects on fish populations and marine ecosystems. It is estimated that around 10% of the adult population in developed countries carry out the activity. Even though recreational fishing is of particular significance (it represents over 10% of fish factory production), unlike professional fishing it is neither controlled nor studied. This doctoral thesis aims to assess the different biological impacts and the socio-economic aspects of recreational fishing in Mediterranean coastal areas, especially in MPAs (which are a determining management tool in regard to conserving biodiversity and marine resources). The results obtained allow establishing a series of recommendations for the study, management and environmental education of this activity.

The present thesis aims to evaluate the use of antioxidant enzyme activities (AEA) of biofilm communities as biomarkers of metal pollution (mainly Zn) in fluvial ecosystems. In order to test AEA as biomarkers of metal pollution as well as their responses to environmental variables, several ecotoxicological experiments have been performed. A zoom from field studies (with high ecological realism) to microcosm experiments (under controlled conditions) has been done to fill the gap between both approaches and understand AEA responses under a multiple-stress (environmental and metallic) scenario. The field studies were carried out in the Riera d’Osor, a tributary of the Ter, located in the region of La Selva (Girona province), L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi és avaluar l’ús de les activitats enzimàtiques antioxidants (AEA) dels biofilms com a biomarcadors de contaminació metàl·lica (principalment per zinc (Zn)) en els ecosistemes fluvials. Per tal d’estudiar la resposta de les AEA a la contaminació metàl•lica, així com també la resposta a altres canvis ambientals (situacions d’estrès múltiple), s’han realitzat diversos experiments ecotoxicològics fent un zoom des d’estudis de camp (amb un elevat realisme ecològic) fins a un estudi de laboratori utilitzant microcosmos (amb condicions controlades). Els estudis de camp s’han dut a terme a la riera d’Osor, afluent del Ter, situada a la comarca de la Selva (província de Girona)

We investigated whether the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) invasion modifies the trophic web of the sclerophyllous Mediterranean forests to the point that impacts co-occurring bird communities. We studied if the invaded cork oak forests represent an ecological trap for the blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus). The invasive ant dramatically impacts native ant communities in the areas studied. The Argentine ant alters the food supplies for the breeding foliage gleaning birds, basically through a depletion of the caterpillar availability in cork oaks. Nevertheless, the Argentine ant invasion does not affect the overall insectivorous birds’ communities. The detailed study of the reproductive dynamics of the blue tit do not provide evidences enough to assure that the blue tit is caught in an ecological trap in the Argentine ant invaded forests, S’avalua si la invasió de formiga argentina (Linepithema humile) modifica la xarxa tròfica dels boscos esclerofil·les mediterranis i arriba a afectar les comunitats d’ocells. Concretament s’estudia si les suredes envaïdes poden representar un parany ecològic per a la mallerenga blava (Cyanistes caeruleus). Els impactes de la invasió resulten ser dramàtics per a les formigues natives, a les que elimina gairebé del tot de les zones envaïdes. La invasió altera el proveïment de recursos alimentaris per a les pollades dels insectívors del fullatge, principalment a base de minvar la disponibilitat d’erugues en alzines sureres. La comparació de les poblacions reproductores d’ocells ens mostra, però, que la formiga argentina no sembla determinar en gran manera les comunitats d’ocells insectívors. L’estudi de la dinàmica reproductiva de la mallerenga tampoc proporciona evidències de què la invasió de formiga argentina constitueixi un parany ecològic per a la mallerenga blava

Nitrate groundwater pollution in the Osona region is a persistent and widespread problem. Nitrate concentrations are commonly above the drinking water threshold of 50 mg/L in wells and springs. ANOVA and logistic regression analyses showed that nitrate concentration is more dependent on land use than on the geological setting of springs. Nitrate content presented stationary values in most of the springs over time, while discharge and electrical conductivity evolution depends on the geological setting and rainfall events. This is attributed to a homogenization of the subsurface processes that determine nitrate infiltration after decades of intensive fertilization. A multiple linear regression model to assess groundwater vulnerability determined that the factors that significantly influence nitrate pollution are: nitrogen load, aquifer type, presence of well-drained and deep soils, irrigation and occurrence of denitrification processes. Vulnerability maps for unconfined, leaky and confined aquifers were developed and can be used for improving groundwater resources management, La contaminació per nitrats de les aigües subterrànies a Osona és un problema persistent i generalitzat, amb concentracions superiors a 50 mg/L. Un model de regressió lineal múltiple per avaluar la vulnerabilitat de les aigües subterrànies ha determinat que els factors que influeixen significativament a la contaminació per nitrats són: la càrrega de nitrogen, el tipus d'aqüífer, la presència de sòls ben drenats i profunds, la irrigació i l’existència de processos de desnitrificació. Els mapes de vulnerabilitat desenvolupats per aqüífers lliures, semi-confinats i confinats són útils per millorar la gestió de les aigües subterrànies

The winter nesting behaviour of the Argentine ant seems to be intrinsic, and its success as an invasive species does not rely on a shift in social organization, nor on a shift in its mode of nesting associated with the introduction to new habitats. Differences in energy investment in queens seem to respond to the different ecological contexts between studied zones. Therefore, L. humile could be experiencing a change in their biological strategies to become an invasive species. Regarding the management of the invasion by means of manual removal of nests, we suggest to do it in winter, at the front, and yearly. Finally, P. pygmaea seems to be affected by L. humile in the front, and to be benefitting in the centre, because L. humile reduces the competitive pressure on it by retracting other native species in the centre, and also because the existence of a certain degree of habituation between these two species, El comportament de L. humile per niar a l'hivern sembla ser intrínsec, i el seu èxit com a espècie invasora no basar-se ni en un canvi en l'organització social, ni en la seva manera de niar associada a la introducció en nous hàbitats. Climatic models predict higher fluxes of UV-B radiation and a decrease in summer precipitation in the near future for the Mediterranean region. The UV radiation can be an oxidative stress factor for plants affecting their physiological activity and morphology. In this context, we aim to investigate the effects of UV (as UV-A as UV-B) radiation on Mediterranean woody species and its interaction with low water availability. The results showed that UV-A supplementation caused an increase in the plant biomass of some species when plants were grown under a low water supply. This beneficial effect on plant biomass seemed to be mediated by an improvement of plant water relations. Increases in leaf sclerophylly or leaf thickness, depending on the experiment, in response to enhanced UV radiation might have contributed to the amelioration of plant water deficit, Durant les properes dècades, a la Regió Mediterrània es preveu un augment de la radiació ultraviolada UV-B i una disminució en la precipitació. La radiació UV pot ser un factor oxidatiu per les plantes afectant la seva activitat fisiològica i la seva morfologia. This study was conducted in burned and harvested areas of Catalonia. It was evaluated the effect of the granivorous in predispersive fruit removal of Smilax aspera and Quercus coccifera and postdispersive seed removal. Nuts removal by rodents was nil in the burned area while for S. aspera only occurred in 2008. The minimum distance to any unburned margin and the distance to the fire perimeter explained patterns of seed removal for rodents and ants, respectively. Seed removal was also lower at unlogged sites vs. logged ones but it was only significative for ants. Rodents removed more seeds under piles of branches because logging while ants did so in areas of bare soil. It should consider the impact of granivorous in the management of burned habitats., Este estudio fue desarrollado en áreas quemadas y taladas de Cataluña. Se evaluó el efecto de los granívoros en la remoción predispersiva de frutos de Smilax aspera y Quercus coccifera así como la remoción postdispersiva de semillas. La remoción de Quercus por parte de roedores fue nula en el área quemada mientras que para S. aspera solo ocurrió en el 2008. La distancia minima a cualquier margen no quemado y la distancia al perímetro del incendio explicaron los patrones de remoción de semillas para roedores y hormigas, respectivamente. La remoción de semillas también fue menor en las estaciones taladas vs. las no taladas, pero solo de forma significativa para hormigas. Los roedores removieron más semillas bajo amontonamientos de ramas producto de la gestión forestal mientras que las hormigas lo hicieron en áreas de suelo desnudo. Se debería contemplar el efecto de los granívoros en la gestión de los hábitats quemados.

Metal pollution in rivers is in great concern with human activities in the fluvial watershed. This thesis aims to investigate the potential use of chl-a fluorescence parameters as biomarkers of metal toxicity, and to find cause-effect relationships between metal exposures, other environmental factor (i.e. light), and functional and structural biofilm responses. This thesis demonstrates that the use of chl-a fluorescence parameters allows detect early effects on biofilms caused by zinc toxicity, both in the laboratory as in polluted rivers. In microcosm experiments, the use of chl-a fluorescence parameters allows evaluates structural changes on photosynthetic apparatus and in algal groups’ composition of biofilms long-term exposed to zinc. In order to evaluate the effects of chronic metal pollution in rivers, it is recommended the use of biofilm translocation experiments and the use of a multi-biomarker approach., La contaminació per metalls en els rius està principalment lligada a l’activitat humana que té lloc a la conca fluvial. Aquesta tesi té per objectiu principal avaluar l'ús potencial dels paràmetres de fluorescència de la chl-a com a biomarcadors de toxicitat per metalls, i trobar relacions causa-efecte entre l’exposició dels metalls, altres factors ambientals (ex. la llum), i les respostes funcionals i estructurals del biofilms. Aquesta tesi demostra que els paràmetres de fluorescència de la chl-a permeten detectar alteracions ràpides del biofilm causades per la toxicitat del zinc, tan al laboratori com en rius contaminats. En microcosmos, els paràmetres de fluorescència de la chl-a permeten avaluar canvis estructurals en l’aparell fotosintètic i en la composició dels grups algals dels biofilms exposats crònicament al zinc. Per avaluar els efectes de la contaminació crònica per metalls en rius es recomana fer experiments de translocació de biofilms i utilitzar una aproximació de multi-biomarcador.

We studied the characteristics and effects of the Argentine ant invasion on the native ants and other arthropods. Moreover, we assessed the effects of L. humile winter nest aggregations extirpation on its population dynamics. We measured the spread of its invasion and evaluated its nest-site preferences. Artificial nests used as a control tool were also assessed. Results indicate that the invasion causes important changes in the native ant community structure. The invasion spread is influenced by air temperature, and habitat perturbations could be favouring a faster expansion. The extirpation diminished the abundance of this ant and disturbed its population dynamics. In order to make this method more efficient, extirpation should be made in the edge of the invasion, and should focus on nests under larger rocks where mature nests are more likely to be found. Finally, this method is proposed mainly for controlling its invasion in closed or isolated areas., Es van comparar les característiques i els efectes de la invasió de la formiga argentina sobre la comunitat de formigues natives, i altres artròpodes. Es va avaluar l'efecte de l'extirpació d’agregacions de nius d’hivern, la selecció de llocs de nidificació i l'ús de nius artificials com a eina de control, i es va mesurar la seva taxa d'expansió. Es va trobar que la invasió provoca canvis importants en la comunitat de formigues natives. La temperatura ambiental influeix en l'expansió, i les pertorbacions de l'hàbitat podrien afavorir una propagació més ràpida. L'extirpació disminueix la seva abundància i pertorba la seva dinàmica poblacional. L'extirpació s'ha de fer al marge de la invasió, i s'ha de centrar en nius situats sota les pedres més grans que és on hi ha més probabilitat de trobar nius madurs. Finalment, aquest mètode es proposa principalment per al control de la invasió en àrees tancades o aïllades.

The objective of this thesis is to analyze the effect of the transformation in the habitat that postfire salvage logging supposes on birds in Mediterranean pine forests, at different levels: species, community and ecosystem, focusing on the bird-mediated seed dispersal process. Salvage logging with commercial purposes is the main factor that determines the species composition after a fire, with the substitution of forest birds by open-habitat species, some of which hold an unfavourable conservation status in Europe. On the other hand, wood debris piles built by non-profitable burnt wood favour the presence of seed disperser frugivorous birds, and these structures show more seed dispersal than other microhabitats, and a higher abundance of bird-dispersed plants, so that it is recommendable to build them in managed burned forests., L'objectiu de la tesi és analitzar l'efecte de la transformació de l'hàbitat que suposa la gestió forestal post-incendi sobre els ocells en pinedes mediterrànies, a diferents nivells: d'espècies, de comunitat, i d'ecosistema, sobre el procés de dispersió de llavors de plantes que duen a terme alguns ocells frugívors. La tala dels arbres cremats amb finalitats principalment comercials és el principal factor que determina la composició d'espècies d'ocells després d'un incendi forestal, amb la substitució d'ocells forestals per espècies lligades a espais oberts, algunes de les quals presenten una situació de conservació desfavorable a Europa. Per altra banda, els pilons de branques construïts amb restes de tala afavoreix la presència d'ocells dispersors de llavors, i aquestes estructures també presenten una pluja de llavors més elevada que altres microhàbitats, i una abundància més gran de plantes dispersades per ocells, per la qual cosa es recomana la seva construcció.

El penegal, Helicolenus dactylopterus dactylopterus (Pisces: Scorpaeniformes), és una espècie que habita profunditats d'entre els 200 i 1000 m i presenta una clara distribució batimètrica en funció de la seva talla. Presenta fecundació interna i a l'interior de l'ovari conté estructures d'emmagatzematge que permeten emmagatzemar l'esperma durant períodes de temps considerablement llargs. Les cèl·lules sexuals masculines es mantenen viables gràcies a diverses substàncies nutritives que obtenen de la bossa citoplasmàtica i de l'epiteli criptal que delimita les estructures d'emmagatzematge. Aquest epiteli és també responsable de la seva protecció. Un cop els ous han assolit la maduresa, els espermatozoides són alliberats al lumen ovàric i es dóna la fertilització. És una espècie zigòpara: allibera òvuls fecundats que han estat retinguts al tracte reproductiu femení durant un curt període de temps i, per tant, els embrions són alliberats en estadis molt primerencs de desenvolupament. Així, el penegal presenta una estratègia reproductiva evidentment eficaç., The bluemouth, Helicolenus dactylopterus dactylopterus (Pisces: Scorpaeniformes), is a species that inhabits the seabed at depths between 200 and 1000 m and shows a clear size-dependent bathymetric distribution.It has internal fertilization and, inside the ovary, there are storage structures that allow it to store sperm for considerably long periods of time. These male sexual cells remain viable thanks to several nutritious substances they obtain from the cytoplasmic bag and from the cryptal epithelium that delimits the storage structures. This epithelium is also responsible for their protection. Once the eggs have reached maturity, the spermatozoa are freed in the ovarian lumen and fertilization occurs. This species is zygoparous: liberation of fertilized ova, which have been retained in the female reproductive tract during a short period of time and, therefore, the embryos are freed in very early stages of development. Thus, the bluemouth exhibits an obviously effective reproductive strategy.

El estudio de las comunidades de cianobacterias en la cuenca del río Muga permite profundizar en la búsqueda de factores que favorezcan o inhiban la acumulación intracelular de microcistinas y su liberación al medio externo en condiciones oligotróficas o con leves signos de eutrofia, al tiempo que permiten aportar nuevos conocimientos que ayuden a mejorar el entendimiento de los mecanismos y procesos que participan en la dinámica de las comunidades de cianobacterias bentónicas y las microcistinas asociadas en ecosistemas fluviales mediterráneos. Se ha realizado un estudio de la estructura y variabilidad de las comunidades de cianobacterias durante un ciclo anual completo mediante muestreos mensuales y muestreos con menor periodicidad durante un segundo ciclo posterior. Dichos muestreos han permitido observar diferentes patrones espacio-temporales a lo largo de todo el período de estudio en los 4 puntos de muestreo seleccionados en la cuenca del río Muga. Estos 4 tramos incluyen 1 punto regulado:aguas abajo del embalse de Boadella, y 3 sin regular:2 cabeceras y un punto aguas abajo de la población de Albanyà. Se han identificado un total de 34 especies de cianobacterias bentónicas en las 4 zonas estudiadas, predominando siempre especies de aguas limpias o poco alteradas. Dos especies, Rivularia biasolettiana (zonas más limpias y expuestas) y Phormidium retzii (sonas esciáfilas o con alta velocidad de corriente), resultan dominantes en gran parte de ellas. Se han reconocido un total de 6 microcistinas acumuladas intracelularmente en la comunidad bentónica de cianobacterias, identificando 3 de ellas: MC-RR, MC-LR y MC-YR. La concentración de microcistinas intracelulares ha disminuído a lo largo del eje principal del río Muga, determinada por diferentes factores físicos, químicos y biológicos. A nivel general, la acumulación total de microcistinas intracelulares ha estado asociada a un aumento de la temperatura del agua, un descenso en la diversidad de la comunidad de cianobacterias y pequeños incrementos de la concentración de fósforo disuelto en el agua. En cuanto a la liberación de microcistinas, ha estado vinculada a distintas perturbaciones soportadas por la comunidad cianobacteriana, tanto asociadas a factores físicos naturales como antrópicos., The study of cyanobacteria communities in the Muga River basin enables further search for factors that promote or inhibit the intracellular accumulation of microcystins and their external release in oligotrophic or sligthly eutrophic conditions. At the same time, it provides new knowlodge to improve the understanding of the mechanisms and proccesses involved in the community dynamics of benthic cyanobacteria and associated microcystins in Mediterranean River ecosystems. A two-year study of the structure and variability of cyanobacterial communities was carried out: monthly sampling during the first annual cycle and lower frequency sampling during the second cycle. This allows observing the different spatial-temporal patterns over the study period in the 4 selected sampling points in the Muga River basin. These 4 points comprise 1 regulated point downstream of the Boadella reservoir, and 3 unregulated points, namely 2 headers and a thrid one downstream of Albanyà village. A total of 34 species of benthic cyanobacteria were identified in the 4 studied areas. The predominant species were linked to clear waters or slightly altered areas. 2 species were dominant in most of them: Rivularia biasolettiana (in cleaner and exposed areas) and Phormidium retzii (in unexposed areas or with high flow velocity).In the benthic community of cyanobacteria, a total of 6 intracellular microcystins were detected. 3 of them were identified: MC-RR, MC-LR and MC-YR. The accumulation of intracellular microcystins decrease along the stream as determined by different physical, chemical and biological factors. At a general level, the total accumulation of intracellular microcystins was associated with an increase in water temperature, a decrease of benthic cyanobacterial diversity and small increases in the concentration of dissolved phosphorus in the water. On the other hand, microcystins release was linked to the effects of different physical disturbances on the cyanobacterial community, wether of natural or anthropical origin.
