This paper reports on the integration of different modelling techniques to construct a unified conceptual model of structural evolution of the Pico del Águila anticline (External Sierras, southern Pyrenees, Spain). The structure is a well-known example of a detachment fold, which exhibits a N-S structural trend, perpendicular to the general structural trend of the southern Pyrenees (mainly E-W). Based on field observations of an unevenly distributed Triassic décollement, analogue modelling shows how to generate orogen-perpendicular structures which may result in transverse anticlines. The models show how contrasts between high and low friction patches in the basal décollement led to the formation of structures at high angle, centered over the high friction areas. Numerical models investigate the effect of a complex mechanical stratigraphy, characterized by an interlayering of competent and incompetent layers, plus syn-kinematic sedimentation in the fold growth. Based on field data and seismic interpretations, a 3D reconstruction and sequential geomechanical restoration of the Pico del Águila anticline suggests the coexistence of multiple folding mechanisms occurring simultaneously in different units and structural domains of the fold, leading to a complex strain pattern that can not be assessed by simplistic kinematic 2D approaches. By integrating the models with previous data in the region, the benefits and drawbacks of each modelling technique are discussed and an integrated model of structural evolution for the Pico del Águila anticline is presented. This enables a better comprehension of the structure as well as of the processes that drove the evolution of the N-S detachment anticlines in the external Sierras of the southern Pyrenees.

[eng] The Canarian archipelago, extends over approximately 500 km in total along the passive continental margin off NW Africa, comprises seven major and four minor islands, and it is part of the so called Macaronesia region, together with the archipelagos of Azores, Madeira, Salvajes and Cape Verde. Within the oceanic geodynamic context, the Canary archipelago is located on oceanic crust of the big African plate, specifically upon the passive continental margin, with thickness exceeding 20 km. It is a good example of oceanic intraplate alkaline volcanism. According the radioisotopic data available (Carracedo et al., 1998) the archipelago has been formed during the last 60 Ma and is still volcanically active. Multiple periods of volcanic activity accompanied with extreme range in magma compositions and eruptive styles have been exhibited during the evolution. A wide variety of models have been proposed for the origin of the Canary Islands, such as, hot spot, decompressing fusion, Atlas generated propagating fracture, or the "block" model based on regional fractures that helped elevate the islands. Holocene sub-aerial activity has occurred on all islands, except La Gomera, with 18 eruptions in the last 520 years (historic activity) on Tenerife, La Palma, Lanzarote and El Hierro. All these eruptive events consist of monogenetic basaltic eruptions along structures or zones identified as rifts (only the 1798 of Montaña Chahorra in Tenerife, expulsed intermediate composition magma and was located at the base of the Teide-Pico Viejo volcanic complex). Although monogenetic volcanism is the most extended type of volcanic activity on the planet (Walker 2000) and is characterized by a large diversity of eruptive styles and products, it is generally associated to low level volcanic hazard and many times it is underestimated in the hazard assessment. The main structures generated by these type of eruptions (concentrated as volcanic fields or long rift zones) are cinder cones, formed by the pyroclastic products and lava flows, that can reach several kilometres length. Eventually, can generate phreatomagmatic deposits, when an interaction between magma and water occurs (shallow submarine volcanism or littoral cones). These eruptions, traditionally, are associated with a single batch and pulse of magma and are greatly influenced by local and regional stress fields. Other parameters that can be important in the evolution of the activity, as in any other volcanic activity, are magma composition, volume, and rheological contrast beneath the surface. Recent studies have revealed that, even in a monogenetic eruption, an internal geochemical evolution could be possible, mainly because of the multiple batches involved and the importance of the local stress controls in the migration and finally eruption of magma. Complexity, derived from these internal and external conditions in combination with the depth where magmas are stored and transported, is reflected in the difficulty to anticipate and forecast these types of eruptions and their evolution, especially, for areas with long quiescent periods and a variety of magmas as in the Canary Islands, where a new volcano could come up in any location. The reconstruction of the structure, geometry, composition and plumbing system conditions of pre- existed monogenetic eruptions on the Canary Islands along with the data obtained (petrological, seismological, geodetical, etc.) of an eruption in course such was the 2011 El Hierro eruption will help us obtain a significant progress in understanding the processes that take place, improve our knowledge on monogenetic eruptions and as a consequence enhance hazard assessment and reduce the risk to human lives., [spa] La última erupción en la isla de El Hierro (2011-12) representa una excelente oportunidad para estudiar el volcanismo monogenético basáltico. La comparación de los productos emitidos durante esa erupción con los emitidos en erupciones anteriores y la interpretación de los resultados petrológicos junto con los datos obtenidos por la red multiparamétrica de vigilancia volcánica del IGN de vigilancia (estaciones sísmicas, GNSS, gravimétricas,…) nos ha permitido lograr un conocimiento integral de los procesos que ocurren antes y durante este tipo de erupciones basáticas monogenéticas, que son las más probables a corto y medio plazo en Canarias. Este enfoque multidisciplinar nos ha proporcionado nueva información sobre el ascenso del magma, las condiciones y procesos internos, los mecanismos de las erupciones basálticas, los mecanismos de deposición y los escenarios de interacción. La interpretación conjunta de todos los datos obtenidos permitirá una mejor evaluación del riesgo volcánico, no solo para la isla de El Hierro, sino para todo el archipiélago canario. En esta tesis, junto con el estudio de la erupción de 2011-12, se han estudiado dos más erupciones; la que ha dado el depósito de productos evolucionados en el centro de la isla (área del Malpaso) donde la dinámica y evolución de ella se ha ligado en la interacción magma/agua y la erupción de Chinyero (1909, Tenerife) que con rasgos similares a la de El Hierro (basáltica) pero con menor volumen de magma involucrado, ha tenido una dinámica más explosiva de lo que se había creído hasta hoy. Por lo tanto, las evaluaciones de riesgo volcánico a largo y corto plazo para el conjunto de las islas Canarias deben tener en cuenta posibles escenarios que no solo incluyen la erupciones basálticas submarinas, como es el caso de 2011-2012, sino también las erupciones sub-aéreas de corta vida como la del Chinyero o las erupciones como la del Malpaso, donde la intrusión basáltica y la interacción con el agua son procesos que aumentan la explosividad de una erupción y como consecuencia, al área afectado de sus productos.

[eng] The African continent preserves a >3.7 Ga long geological record, which comprises stabilization of oldest crust in the Archean, late Proterozoic joining of first cratonic units that lead to the formation of Gondwana and later the supercontinent Pangea, and post-breakup Mesozoic and Cenozoic continental rifting with transition to active oceanic spreading in the Afar and Red Sea region. Today, most of Africa’s basement consists of Archean cratons and blocks flanked by Proterozoic mobile belts and is considered to be tectonically stable, as it largely escaped tectonothermal deformation since the late-Precambrian Pan-African orogeny. Yet, Africa is affected by a number of active processes, many of them as young as the Cenozoic Era, including widespread hotspot volcanism, active rifting in East Africa, large-scale doming in eastern and sub-equatorial Africa and intracratonic subsidence in the Congo. The link between old Precambrian stable basement and recent tectonic activity makes Africa an ideal laboratory to study the role of the crustal and lithospheric mantle structure on the observed deformation within the continent. The main goal of this thesis is to provide new crustal and lithospheric thickness maps of the African mainland based on integrated modelling of elevation and geoid data and thermal analysis. The approach assumes local isostasy, thermal steady-state, and linear density increase with depth in the crust and temperature-dependent density in the lithospheric mantle. The obtained results are constrained by a new comprehensive compilation of seismic Moho-depth data consisting of 551 data points from active and passive source seismic experiments, and by published tomography models relative to lithosphere thickness. The calculated crustal thickness map shows a north-south bimodal distribution with higher thickness values in the cratonic domains of southern Africa (38 - 44 km) relative to those beneath northern Africa (33 - 39 km). The most striking result is the crustal thinning (28 - 30 km thickness) imaged along the Mesozoic West and Central African Rift Systems. The crustal model shows noticeable differences when compared to previous global and continent-scale models, especially for regions to the north of the equator. After excluding the Afar plume region, where the modeling assumptions are not fulfilled, the model shows the best fit with the available seismic data (76.3% fitting; RMSE=4.3 km). The new crustal thickness map correlates better with geological structures and tectonic provinces as well as gravity anomalies, and shows a higher spatial resolution. The resulting lithospheric thickness map shows large spatial variability (90 to 230 km), with thicker lithosphere related to cratonic domains and shallower LAB related to Mesozoic and Cenozoic rifting domains, which is in good agreement with seismic tomography models. Though the crustal and lithosphere thickness maps show similar regional patterns, major differences are found in the Atlas Mountains, the West African Rift System, and the intracratonic basins, i.e., the Taoudeni and Congo Basin, indicating strong strain partitioning most probably due to intra-lithospheric decoupling along the crust-mantle boundary. The effects of lateral variations in crustal density as well as the non-isostatic contribution to elevation in the Afar plume region, was estimated to be ~1.8 km, and are also discussed., [spa] La arquitectura del continente Africano es el resultado de una compleja historia >3.7 billones de años. En la actualidad, la mayoría del basamento de África consiste en cratones Archeanos flanqueados por cinturones móviles Proterozoicos y es considerado tectónicamente estable puesto que no ha sufrido deformación tectono-termal desde la orogenia Pan-Africana al final del Precámbrico. A pesar de todo, África es afectada por procesos activos como, volcanismo de punto caliente, rift continental y subsidencia intractratónica. Por lo tanto, África es el escenario ideal para estudiar el rol de la estructura litosférica y cortical en la deformación observada en el continente. El objetivo principal de esta tesis es presentar nuevos mapas de potencia litosférica y cortical del continente Africano basados en la integración de datos de elevación, geoide y térmicos en la modelización. El método asume isostasia local, régimen térmico estacionario e incremento lineal de la densidad en profundidad, así como interrelación entre la densidad del manto litosférico y temperatura. Los resultados obtenidos están constreñidos por una nueva compilación de la profundidad del Moho a partir de datos sísmicos, consistente en 551 puntos, y por modelos tomográficos publicados de la potencia litosférica. El mapa de potencia cortical presenta una distribución bimodal de Norte a Sur con valores mayores en los dominios cratónicos en el sur de África (38 – 44 km) relativos a los presentes en el norte (33 – 39 km). El resultado más llamativo es el adelgazamiento de la corteza (28 – 30 km) calculado a lo largo del Sistema del Rift Mesozoico en el Oeste y Centro. Tras excluir la región de Afar, donde las asunciones del modelo no se cumplen, el ajuste a la información sísmica disponible es mejor (76.3%; RMSE=4.3 km). El mapa de potencia litosférica presenta grandes variabilidades (90 - 230 km), con una litosfera engrosada ligada a los dominios cratónicos y LAB somera relacionada con el Rift Mesozoico y Cenozoico, concordante con los modelos de tomografía sísmica. A pesar de que los mapas de la potencia litosférica y cortical presentan patrones regionales similares, existen grandes diferencias en el Atlas, el Sistema Oeste del Rift, y las cuencas intractratónicas. El efecto de las variaciones laterales de densidad así como la contribución no isostática a la elevación en la zona de Afar, se estima que es de ~1.8 km.

In this thesis I have carried out a comprehensive study of the attenuation properties of the Earth´s crust of the Iberia-Morocco region (IMR). I have investigated the crustal attenuation by means of the quality factor Q, which is inversely proportional to attenuation, using both earthquakes and noise-derived measurements. In order to fulfill the thesis objectives a large dataset including earthquake waveforms and seismic noise records has been used. Three different traditional earthquake methods have been implemented to estimate Q in the IMR: the two-station (TS) method, the coda normalization (CN) method and the spectral amplitude decay (SAD) method. For the estimation of Q, these approaches measure the spectral amplitude of the Lg wave (direct and coda) of regional events. Among all the methods evaluated, the TS method allows imaging the spatial variation of the Lg wave attenuation in the Iberian Peninsula whereas the CN and the SAD methods only estimate average attenuation values as well as its frequency dependence. For the Iberian Peninsula, high Lg Q values are observed in the stable Iberian Massif in western Iberia, while lower values are mainly found in the Pyrenean Range and in eastern and southern Iberia. For Morocco, the CN and the SAD methods produce similar results, indicating that the Lg Q models are robust to differences in the methodologies. The frequency-dependent Q estimates represent an average attenuation across a broad region of different structural domains and correlate well with areas of moderate seismicity. Additionally, I have studied the Lg propagation efficiency across the IMR. Results reflect an inefficient or even blocked propagation across the Gulf of Cádiz and for most paths crossing the western Alboran basin. The continental crust of the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco shows efficient Lg propagation. I have also investigated the potential of using ambient noise measurements to retrieve information about the anelastic structure of the Earth´s crust. Since noise preprocessing techniques modify the amplitude of the recovered empirical Green function of the medium, additional tests have to be done in order to verify the reliability of the attenuation results obtained. In this regard, I have carefully examined the influence of the distribution of noise sources and receivers on Q estimates. Azimuthally and spatially averaged Q values derived from noise recordings were further compared with earthquake attenuation measurements. Results reveal that the average Q estimates are in concordance with previous long-period surface-wave measurements from earthquakes in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula. Accurate Q estimates are also found in Morocco. I would like to emphasize that this thesis presents new contributions and improvements to the knowledge of the attenuation structure of the IMR. Passive seismic surveys have become popular in the last decades. Especially because it shows a high capacity for seismic subsoil characterization for a cheap cost. In particular, it is largely used for identification of seismic amplification site effects. The results have the capacity to define areas with the same seismic behaviour, more precisely whether the ground motion generated by a possible earthquake will be amplified or not. To furnish the results, a large area was covered by the HVSR (Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio) single station survey. In addition, few array multi-sensor configurations have been set. The correlation of all results aim to obtain the shear wave velocity - depth profiles and the identification of areas susceptible of seismic motion amplification. As well, another goal of this work is to clarify the presence of the Rapolano Fault (an important geological structure that delimits the East margin of the Siena basin). Finally, this study aspires to confirm the capability of the passive seismic prospecting techniques

La caracterització de les falles actives, inclús d’aquelles que tenen un moviment moderat-lent (< 5 mm/a), és un requeriment per a poder mitigar el risc sísmic d’una regió. En aquesta tesi es calculen els paràmetres sísmics de la falla d’Alhama de Murcia (FAM), responsable del terratrèmol de Mw 5.2 de Lorca l’11 de maig del 2011. Aquesta falla del SE de la Península Ibèrica forma part de la Zona de Cisalla de las Bètiques Orientals (ZCBO) conformada principalment per falles de salt en direcció esquerra que absorbeixen part de l’escurçament entre les plaques euroasiàtica i africana. Els paràmetres sísmics de la FAM que s’han obtingut són la velocitat de desplaçament, la recurrència, el salt per esdeveniment i la magnitud màxima esperable. Es posa especial èmfasi en el primer, calculat mitjançant una anàlisi morfotectònica i un estudi paleosísmic tridimensional. En ambdues metodologies, el càlcul s’ha basat en la dislocació tectònica d’un element lineal (normalment un canal) d’edat coneguda. És necessari afrontar dos reptes principals. Primerament, l’escassetat de material geològic disponible per a ser datat en un context de fàcies proximals de ventalls al·luvials. Per a solucionar-ho, s’ha ampliat el nombre de datacions numèriques amb les tècniques del radiocarboni, la luminescència estimulada òpticament i les sèries de l’urani. Aquesta darrera és emprada de forma pionera a la Península Ibèrica per a datar petites quantitats de carbonat pedogènic. També s’han posat les bases de la primera crono-seqüència edàfica calibrada per al SE de la península vàlida per al Pleistocè superior-Holocè, que ha de permetre estalviar temps i diners a l’hora d’aproximar l’edat de les unitats geològiques. El segon repte és metodològic. La majoria de tècniques per a obtenir paràmetres sísmics de falles actives han estat desenvolupades per, i en, falles en contextos més ràpids, les quals presenten clares diferències respecte la FAM. Es proposen dues alternatives a les tècniques comunament emprades. Per una banda, es creen unes pautes per a la descripció detallada dels elements geomorfològics afectats per l’activitat de la falla. L’objectiu és millorar el criteri per jerarquitzar les dislocacions segons la seva qualitat en calcular la velocitat de desplaçament. Per altra banda, per a calcular la dislocació d’un paleocanal amb tècniques paleosísmiques, s’han excavat entre dues i tres trinxeres paral·leles a cada bloc de la falla. S’ha ajustat una línia recta tridimensional a tots els punts pertanyents a cada element característic del canal (marges o depocentre) a cada bloc de la falla. Aquestes línies s’han projectat contra el pla de falla i s’ha mesurat la distància entre el parell de punts homòlegs obtingut. S’han calculat una velocitat de desplaçament lateral del segment Goñar-Lorca de 1,6-1,7 mm/a (darrers 200 ka), i una velocitat de 1,0 ± 0,2 mm/a (pels últims 30 ka) per una de les tres traces del segment Lorca-Totana (tot i que les evidències geomorfològiques suggereixen una velocitat en el component vertical del segment Lorca-Totana més elevada). Aquests valors confirmen la FAM com una de les falles més actives de la ZCBO. El registre de paleoterratrèmols identificats a la FAM s’ha incrementat fins a 10, obtenint una recurrència màxima pels últims 59 ka de ~3,5-5,3 ka. El salt màxim per esdeveniment s’ha estimat en 4,0 ± 1,2 m, i la magnitud màxima esperable varia entre Mw 6,7 ± 0,3 i Mw ~7,5. Les datacions numèriques obtingudes han permès correlacionar estadis climàtics càlids i humits amb els moments d’estabilització de les superfícies i de formació de sòls. A més, s’ha aproximat el lapse temporal entre l’estabilització d’una superfície i la precipitació de carbonat pedogènic per a ser datat en 3-8 ka per al període Holocè., The characterisation of active faults is essential to mitigate the associated seismic risk. I calculated the seismic parameters of the Alhama de Murcia fault (AMF; SE Iberian Peninsula), which was responsible for the Mw 5.2 Lorca earthquake in 2011. This fault is part of the Eastern Betics Shear Zone (EBSZ), composed mostly of left-lateral strike-slip faults that absorb part of the deformation between the Eurasian and African plates. I obtained the slip rate, the recurrence period, the slip per event and the maximum expected magnitude. I calculated the slip rate using two approaches: a morphotectonic analysis and a three-dimensional paleoseismic study, both based on measuring the offset of a linear feature, normally a channel, whose age is known. Two main challenges arise in calculations of the seismic parameters of the AMF. First, the scarcity of age control. I increased the number of numerical datings by applying radiocarbon, Optically Stimulated Luminescence, and U-series (used for first time in the Iberian Peninsula to date small amounts of pedogenic carbonate) techniques. The dating results allowed me to correlate warm and wet climatic stages with landscape stabilization and soil formation, and to calculate the time lapse between deposition and precipitation of datable amounts of pedogenic carbonate (3–8 ka for Holocene). The second challenge was methodological. I proposed two alternatives to the commonly used techniques designed in and for fast-moving faults: a) I created guidelines to describe in detail the geomorphological elements affected by fault activity, to further the discussion on calculations of the slip rate; and b) I wrote a script to calculate the offset of a paleochannel, based on the distance between a piercing point pair obtained by projecting the 3D straight line that best fits the paleochannel orientation against the fault. The lateral slip rate that was obtained ranged 1.6-1.7 mm/yr (past 200 ka) and 1.0±0.2 mm/yr (past 30 ka). I reported 10 paleoevents in the last 59 ka, yielding a recurrence period of ~3.5-5.3 ka. The maximum slip per event was 4.0±1.2 m and the maximum expected magnitude ranged from Mw 6.7±0.3 to Mw ~7.5.

This thesis is devoted to the development of a land-based controlled-source electromagnetics (CSEM) experimental methodology to be applied to the monitoring of CO2 storage at the Technological Development Plant (TDP) of Hontomín (Burgos, Spain). The main objectives of the thesis are 1) the evaluation of the feasibility of performing a CSEM monitoring at Hontomín, 2) the design of the CSEM monitoring experiment, and 3) the acquisition of the baseline (pre-injection) data set and the processing of the data obtaining the geoelectrical response of the structure. A modeling experiment has been performed simulating the resistivity changes in the reservoir caused by the storage and evaluating the ability of the method to detect them. The study analyzes the capabilities of different experimental configurations (source/receiver location and relative orientation, emission frequencies...) in order to decide the appropriate configuration in views of the real experiment. The study considered the simulation of an experimental configuration in two different moments of the storage process (pre- and post-injection). It compares the synthetic results obtained in each case and seeks the differences to infer the presence of CO2. A wide range of scenarios of increasing complexity were simulated, from 1D models with an infinite CO2 plume to models with a 3D plume in a medium that contains the casings of the injection and monitoring wells and considers the noise conditions at the Hontomín TDP. The CO2 effect on the synthetic data was analyzed with two different approaches: quantifying the signal caused by the CO2 on the data, TLS (time-lapse signal), and comparing it with the noise conditions in the study area, D (detectability). A borehole-to-surface configuration is sensitive to the presence of CO2, to its saturation and to the relative position source/plume. Furthermore, it was observed that the steel casings installed in the injection and monitoring wells affect the EM propagation from the transmitter to the surface. The study concluded that the CSEM monitoring is suitable at Hontomín given that measurable changes will occur between time- lapsed data sets. Considering the results obtained in the modeling study, the CSEM monitoring experiment was designed. The baseline acquisition was carried out between April 21st and 26th 2014. A borehole-to-surface configuration was used with three different transmitter dipoles: 1) vertical dipole in the injection well HI (dVED-1), 2) vertical dipole in the monitoring well HA dVED- 2), and 3) horizontal dipole using one electrode in each well (dHED). Receivers were distributed at the surface in two different patterns: cross-shape and circular-shape. During each emission, 86 surface dipoles were measuring the electric field. Data processing focused on the obtaining of the geoelectrical response of the subsurface for each source/receiver configuration and for each processed frequency. To this goal, time series were divided into segments and, for each one, the transfer function between source transmission and receiver electric field were calculated. Experimental data were analyzed in terms of experimental uncertainty (error associated to each measurement) and experimental repeatability. Experimental results allowed to characterize the geoelectrical response of the Hontomín structure (including steel casings). Baseline data quality is high: experimental errors are lower than 1% in amplitude and 1º in phase for most of the data points. Repeatability is high (differences lower than 1% in most of the cases). The casing influence over the experimental data was investigated. We tested the hypothesis that a current was induced along the casing of the injection well. To reproduce the experimental behavior of the data, a number of scenarios have been simulated. For low frequencies, the hypothesis can explain the experimental data. Considering the high data quality obtained and the results of the modeling study, we consider that the CSEM experiment will be able to detect the CO2-caused resistivity changes in the reservoir after the post-injection repetition of the experiment., Aquesta tesi se centra en el desenvolupament del mètode electromagnètic de font controlada (CSEM) aplicat al monitoratge de l’emmagatzematge geològic de diòxid de carboni (CO2) a la Planta de Demostració Tecnològica (PDT) d’Hontomín (Burgos). El control del comportament del CO2 es basa en la detecció dels canvis de resistivitat que tenen lloc al reservori un cop el CO2 desplaça la salmorra. La tesi engloba el progrés de l’experiment de monitoratge CSEM des dels seus inicis fins a l’actualitat. En primer lloc, s’avalua la viabilitat del monitoratge mitjançant el mètode CSEM a partir d’un estudi de modelització numèrica i s’analitzen les bondats de diferents configuracions experimentals. L’estudi consisteix en la simulació d’una configuració experimental en dos estadis del procés d’emmagatzematge (pre-injecció i post-injecció) i en la comparació dels resultats sintètics amb l’objectiu de relacionar les diferències amb la presència del CO2. Inclou la simulació d’un ampli rang d’escenaris de complexitat creixent. Es proposen dues aproximacions diferents per poder quantificar el senyal causat pel CO2 i comparar-lo amb les condicions de soroll reals a Hontomín. En segon lloc, es descriu el disseny del dispositiu de control de l’evolució temporal de la ploma de CO2 aplicat a la PDT d’Hontomín i la realització de la campanya pre-injecció. El processat de les dades experimentals ha consistit en el càlcul de la resposta geoelèctrica de la formació geològica, incloent les carcasses metàl·liques dels pous d’injecció i monitoratge. Les dades experimentals s’analitzen en funció del seu error experimental i de la seva repetibilitat. La qualitat de les dades experimentals pre-injecció és alta respecte als dos punts de vista: els errors experimentals són inferiors a l’1% en l’amplitud i a 1º en la fase per la majoria de les dades i les diferències en la repetibilitat són inferiors a l’1% en la majoria dels casos. Finalment, s’estudia la influència de les carcasses sobre les dades experimentals. S’investiga si la inducció d’un corrent al llarg de la carcassa del pou d’injecció pot explicar el seu comportament. A partir de la simulació de diferents escenaris, s’ha comprovat que la hipòtesi és capaç de reproduir el comportament qualitatiu de les dades a freqüències baixes.

[cat] Un tsunami és un seguit d'onades al mar causades per una ona de gran període T (entre 5 i 60 minuts) i de longitud d’ona L molt llarga (fins a 800 km). A alta mar tenen una altura d'ona H molt baixa (difícilment més de 3 m), de manera que es tracta d'ones extremadament planes i difícilment apreciables en alta mar. L’aproximació d’aquestes ones de tsunami a les costes someres dona un procés d'augment d’alçada de l'onada. Aquest efecte fa créixer l'altura dels tsunamis dels no més de 3 metres a alta mar fins a més de 25 m al costat de la costa, mentrestant, la velocitat de l'onada va disminuint. Un cop aquest tsunami contacta amb la costa es donen uns fenòmens de caire geomorfològic a les costes rocoses, consistents en registres sedimentaris de deposició de blocs que presenten un patró característic, les orientacions i les imbricacions. Fins a dia d’avui destriar blocs de tsunamis de blocs de tempesta ha estat un tema força debatut, i fins i tot contradictori, tot i que sembla que ens els darrers quatre anys s’han establert certs patrons de deposició comuns de blocs a la mediterrània, no existint un treball exhaustiu a la costa del mediterrani occidental com és Catalunya, Balears i la resta de l’estat. Aquesta tesi doctoral s'emmarca dins l’àmbit de recerca de la geologia i geomorfologia litoral, i té per objectiu relacionar la presencia de blocs de grans dimensions a les costes rocoses de les illes Balears amb les fonts tsunamítiques conegudes al Mediterrani occidental. El treball parteix de la hipòtesis que molts dels blocs ubicats sobre les costes rocoses de les illes, i amb unes característiques geomorfològiques concretes, corresponen a dipòsits de tsunami, tot i que l’ample mostreig permet l’estudi simultani de fenòmens de tempesta i tsunami. Per l’estudi s’han identificat 50 àrees de mostreig, i amb la finalitat d’establir escenaris de deposició de blocs s’han caracteritzat geològica i geomorfològicament cadascuna de les àrees d’estudi, mitjançant cartografia i recollida de dades morfològiques. S’han pres mesures morfomètriques dels blocs i a aquests se’ls ha aplicat una triangulació per tenir un volum més real. Dels blocs s’han pres dades d’imbricació i orientació, fets determinants a l’hora de destriar blocs de tempesta i blocs de tsunami. Així mateix s’han establert 6 perfils tipus de costa que permeten relacionar dades morfomètriques i d’onatge. A cada àrea s’han aplicat un conjunt d’equacions que permeten establir, baix tres escenaris inicials d’arrabassament dels blocs; blocs submergits, blocs aïllats i blocs delimitats per juntes, les columnes d’aigua necessàries pel seu trasllat i deposició al llarg de la costa rocosa. D’aquestes àrees s’han identificat 8 sectors representatius al conjunt balear i s’han relacionat les dades morfomètriques de blocs, el tipus de perfil, l’onatge i les orientacions i imbricacions amb els resultats de les equacions aplicades i amb les fonts tsunamítiques provinents del N d’Àfrica, donant com a resultat una bona correlació entre trajectòries de tsunamis i morfometria de blocs. Els resultats més evidents són aquelles àrees ubicades sobre penya-segats verticals amb presència de grans blocs imbricats i amb morfologies de cordons on no hi arriben els onatges de tempesta, configurant-se com a àrees eminentment tsunamítiques i on les orientacions dominants indiquen el N d’Àfrica. La resta d’àrees, tot i que el seu perfil litoral pot ser afectat per les onades de tempesta, poden ser denominades mixtes, tot i que la morfometria de blocs i les distàncies dels cordons en relació a la cornisa de cada penya-segat invaliden en un alt grau les tempestes. La tesi doctoral conclou que l’anàlisi morfològica de la costa i l’anàlisi de la morfometria de blocs són un bon indicador, juntament amb l’aplicació de les equacions matemàtiques i la correlació de fonts tsunamítiques per destriar blocs de tempesta de tsunami. Les datacions realitzades sobre blocs a les diferents localitats han permès establir una cronologia d’episodis correlacionables amb tsunamis i terratrèmols enregistrats documentalment, tots ells ocorreguts en un període històric que es situa entre el segles XVII i XIX. La majoria de datacions de les localitats mesurades tenen poca dispersió i s’agrupen en una franja d’edat situada entre els anys 1700 i el 1850., [eng] When tsunami waves hit the rocky coasts, geomorphological phenomenon take place. These phenomenon consist of the sedimentation of rocky blocks with a particular pattern: orientations and overlapping. This doctoral thesis is framed within the disciplines of geology and coastal geomorphology. Its aim is to link the presence of big blocks of rock in the rocky coasts of the Balearic Islands with the known tsunamic sources of the western Mediterranean Sea. The following hypothesis is at the origin of this study: many of the blocks of rock located on the rocky coasts of the Balearic Islands, all of them having some specific geomorphological features, are tsunami deposits. For this study, 50 sample areas where identified; they were afterwards characterised geologically and geomorphologically by means of cartography and morphology data collection. In each area, a combination of mathematical equations was applied in order to identify, under three initial stages ―submerged, isolated and edges of the joint blocks―, the water columns needed to transport them and to deposit them along the rocky coast. 8 representative sectors were been identified, and they were correlated in terms of shoreline profile, swell, and blocks of rock orientation and overlapping, with the results of the mathematical equations and the tsunamic sources coming from the north of Africa. The outcome of such correlation is that the path drawn by tsunamis is linked with the morphometry of the blocks of rock. The most obvious results of this study are the overlapped blocks with cord morphologies, located in vertical cliffs out of reach of storms’ swell. These areas are mainly tsunamic and are oriented towards the north of Africa. As regards the rest of the areas, although their shoreline profile can be affected by storm waves, they can be referred to as mixt. In the mixt areas, the morphometry of the blocks and the distance of the cords of blocks in relation to the cornice of the cliff, annuls most of the effects of storms. The conclusion of this doctoral thesis is that the morphological analysis of the coast and the morphometry of blocks of rock, as well as the mathematical equations and the correlation of tsunamic sources, are good indicators to distinguish those blocks which have resulted from a tsunamic storm and those who have not. The datings made to some blocks of rock in different spots allowed establishing a chronology of episodes which can be correlated to recorded tsunamis and earthquakes. These tsunamis and earthquakes took place between the 17th and the 19th centuries, and most of the results of the datings show that all the blocks were transported by high energy flows between the years 1700 and 1850.

[eng] Seismic, deformation, and gas activity (unrest) typically precedes volcanic eruptions. Successful volcanic event forecasting depends on the quality of the surveillance network for detecting any changes in volcano behaviour. To interpret the geochemical and geophysical precursors correctly it is important to understand the volcanic processes that occur prior and during volcanic eruptions. Detailed knowledge of the volcano internal structure, the rheology of the magmas, the time scales of the processes occurring at depth and the characteristics of past unrest episodes, must be combined with an adequate monitoring network to improve the volcanic hazard forecast. However, these aspects have received little attention in monogenetic volcanoes. The aim of my PhD Thesis is to improve our understanding on monogenetic volcanism, its causes and dynamics, and to help anticipating the volcanic activity. I have focused on three main aspects of this problem. The first one is the calculation of the rheological properties of magmas during mixing. The second aspect I have addressed are the processes and time scales that lead to monogenetic eruptions with the aim to better interpret volcanic unrest and improve eruption forecasts. Finally, I have investigated the seismic unrest periods of historical monogenetic eruptions from a compilation of historical accounts worldwide. The results provide a conceptual framework for better anticipating monogenetic eruptions and should lead to improved strategies for mitigation of their associated hazards and risks., [spa] Las erupciones volcánicas están generalmente precedidas por la actividad sísmica, la deformación y la desgasificación (unrest). El éxito en la predicción del evento volcánico depende de la calidad de la red de vigilancia para detectar cualquier cambio en el comportamiento del volcán. Para interpretar los precursores geoquímicos y geofísicos correctamente es importante entender los procesos volcánicos que ocurren antes y durante las erupciones volcánicas. El conocimiento en detalle de la estructura interna del volcán, la reología de los magmas, las escalas de tiempo de los procesos que ocurren en profundidad y las características de los episodios pasados de unrest, debe combinarse con una red de vigilancia adecuada para mejorar el pronóstico de los eventos volcánicos. Sin embargo, estos aspectos han recibido poca atención en los volcanes monogenéticos. El objetivo de mi tesis doctoral es mejorar nuestra comprensión sobre el vulcanismo monogenético, sus causas y su dinámica, con el objetivo de mejorar la posibilidad de anticiparse a la actividad volcánica. Me he centrado en tres aspectos principales de este problema. El primero es el cálculo de las propiedades reológicas de los magmas durante los eventos de mezcla. El segundo aspecto es el estudio de los procesos, junto con sus escalas temporales, que llevan a erupciones monogenéticas con el fin de interpretar mejor la actividad volcánica y mejorar los pronósticos de una erupción. Por último, he investigado los períodos de unrest sísmico de erupciones monogenéticas históricas en todo el mundo mediante una compilación de documentos históricos. Los resultados proporcionan un marco conceptual que permite mejorar la predicción de erupciones monogenéticas y deberían conducir a mejores estrategias para mitigar sus peligros y riesgos asociados.

Aquesta tesi es centra en l'estudi estratigràfic i estructural d'un sector de la zona axial del Pirineu, concretament al sud d'Andorra, en què hi afloren roques del Paleozoic que han estat afectades per les orogènesis herciniana i alpina. Els objectius principals d'aquesta tesi es centren en millorar el coneixement de la geologia regional d'Andorra, i es poden agrupar en els següents punts: - Millorar el coneixement de l'estratigrafia de les roques d'Andorra. - Proposar una evolució estructural del sector d'estudi a partir de la realització de talls geològics i d'observacions de camp. - Comparar el sector d'estudi amb altres massissos hercinians i establir relacions entre ells. Aquesta tesi parteix de la realització d'un mapa geològic del sector a l'escala 1:25.000 (que es presenta a l'escala 1:50.000 per facilitar-ne la lectura) que és la base del treball i l'element de visualització de part dels resultats. Les unitats estructurals estudiades són el dom de la Rabassa, la part més oriental del sinclinal de Llavorsí i de l'anticlinal de la Massana, i un sector del massís de la Pallaresa, al nord est d'Andorra. En el capítol d’estratigrafia es caracteritzen les formacions que afloren a l’àrea d’estudi i que inclouen des de la Fm d’Alins (Cambroordovicià) fins al Devonià mitjà. El següent capítol tracta sobre la datació de zircons detrítics amb mètodes radiomètrics U-Pb de tres mostres corresponents a les quarsites del sostre de la Fm de Jújols i a una mostra de la Fm quarsita de Bar. Els objectius són: 1) determinar l'edat màxima de sedimentació d'aquestes dues formacions, i 2) determinar la situació dels Pirineus al marge nord de Gondwana durant el Paleozoic inferior a partir de la comparació amb les poblacions d'edat d'altres terrenys perigondwànics dels que ja se'n coneix la posició, i proposar àrees font d'aquests sediments. Pel que fa a l’estructura, s’han realitzat tres talls geològics compensats de direcció nord - sud que abasten tota la zona d'estudi. En aquests talls queden reflectits els diferents episodis de deformació que s'han descrit en aquest treball, que es poden agrupar en dos episodis anteriors a la foliació principal, l'episodi de deformació principal i els episodis posteriors. La fase de deformació principal és herciniana i es caracteritza per la formació de plecs, encavalcaments i una foliació S2, tots ells vergents cap al sud. Aquest episodi de deformació es desenvolupa en tres estadis: en el primer es formen encavalcaments vergents cap al sud arrelats al Silurià i plecs associats en els materials suprajacents, en el segon es formen els grans plecs quilomètrics que afecten a tota la sèrie i que són els responsables de la forma cartogràfica actual de les grans unitats i la foliació principal en aquest sector S2, i finalment es formen els grans encavalcaments que tallen totes les estructures anteriors i que estarien arrelats en els materials del Cambroordovicià. La deformació alpina de la zona d'estudi es limita a moviments de tota la làmina que donen lloc a la rotació i/o basculament de les estructures prèvies, i a la reactivació d'algunes falles i encavalcaments hercinians. Gràcies a la restitució dels talls s'ha pogut calcular un escurçament màxim en aquest sector d'un 60%, la major part del qual és degut a les deformacions hercinianes. Per últim, es discuteix la relació de la meitat sud d'Andorra amb altres sectors del Pirineu i amb els massissos hercinians més propers, fent èmfasi en les característiques sedimentològiques, estructurals i magmàtiques d'aquests territoris, així com de l'anàlisi de procedència realitzat a partir de l'estudi dels zircons detrítics., This thesis centres on a stratigraphic and structural study of a sector of the axial zone of the Pyrenees in the south of the Principality of Andorra, where Paleozoic rocks affected by the Hercynian and Alpine orogenies outcrop. Its main objective – to improve knowledge of the regional geology of Andorra – can be broken down into three principal aims: - Improve knowledge of the stratigraphy of the rocks of Andorra; - Propose a structural evolution of the study area using geological cross-sections and field observations; - Compare the study area with other Hercynian massifs and establish possible relationships between them. The thesis is based on the geological mapping of the study area at 1:25,000 scale (included here only at 1:50,000 scale to facilitate its legibility), which affords a visual representation of part of the results of the study. In the stratigraphy chapter, the formations that outcrop in the study area have been characterized. These outcrops include rocks from the Alins Fm (Cambro-Ordovician) until Middle Devonian. The next chapter deals with detrital zircon dating using U-Pb radiometric techniques to study three samples of quartzites from the uppermost part of the Jújols Formation and one sample of quartzite from the Bar Formation. The principal aims were to estimate the maximum depositional age of these two formations and to determine the position of the Pyrenees on the northern margin of Gondwana in the Lower Paleozoic by comparing the ages of these samples with populations from other Perigondwanan terranes of known ages, thereby enabling source areas for these sediments to be proposed. As for the structure, the structural analysis included three north-south geological cross-sections that cover the whole study area. The different deformation episodes that are described in this thesis are identifiable in these cross-sections, and can be grouped into episodes from before the main foliation, the main hercynian deformation episode and subsequent episodes. Finally, we discuss the relationship between the southern sector of Andorra and other sectors of the Pyrenees and the nearest other Hercynian massifs, with an emphasis on the sedimentological, structural and magmatic characteristics of these areas, as well as on the analysis of their provenance determined by the study of detrital zircons.

[cat] La tomografia elèctrica de resistivitat és una tècnica geofísica no intrusiva àmpliament utilitzada en la caracterització de les propietats elèctriques del subsòl i, més recentment, en el seguiment de processos dinàmics, tant amb elèctrodes en superfície com en fondària. Un dels aspectes clau en la seva utilització és l'elecció de la configuració més adient a cada context. Si s'utilitzen elèctrodes en fondària aquesta elecció no és fàcil, ja que les capacitats d'aquest tipus de configuracions no estan tan establertes com les de superfície. A més, en el cas d'estudis de seguiment de processos dinàmics pot ser necessari reduir el nombre de dades de les configuracions per a ajustar el temps d'adquisició a la durada del procés a seguir. La utilització de la tomografia elèctrica amb elèctrodes en fondària i la seva aplicació per al seguiment de processos dinàmics implica situar dels elèctrodes en pous i utilitzar noves tècniques d'inversió per a l'obtenció dels models de les variacions de la resistivitat en l'experiment. Els objectius principals d'aquesta tesi han estat cercar estratègies d'adquisició de dades que permetin simplificar l'elecció de la configuració més adient reduint alhora el temps de registre, i comparar diferents tipus d'instal.lacions d'elèctrodes en pous i diferents tècniques d'inversió per a l'obtenció dels models de variació de la resistivitat del subsòl en estudis de seguiment. En aquesta tesi es presenten dues estratègies d'adquisició i el disseny d'un experiment de seguiment de la perforació del túnel de la nova línia L9 del metro de Barcelona. La primera estratègia es va desenvolupar a partir de l'estudi de la llei d'addició del potencial, el teorema de reciprocitat i les relacions entre diferents configuracions. Aquesta estratègia es va centrar en estudis de caracterització amb elèctrodes en superfície i es va validar mitjançant simulacions i dades experimentals. Es va crear una nova configuració tetra-electròdica capaç de generar les dades dels dispositius Wenner-Schlumberger i dipol-dipol, però amb un menor temps d'adquisició. A més, es va introduir un control de qualitat de les dades, semblant al que s'obtindria comparant dades normals i recíproques, sense augmentar el temps de registre. En la segona estratègia es va quantificar la detecció d’anomalies i la simetria en el patró de sensibilitat de les configuracions d’elèctrodes. Aquesta estratègia es va centrar en les configuracions d’elèctrodes en pous i es va validar mitjançant la simulació d’un experiment de seguiment de la migració d’un plomall. A partir dels resultats obtinguts es va crear una configuració optimitzada utilitzant les combinacions d’elèctrodes amb els majors valors de detecció d’anomalies i amb la menor simetria en el patró de sensibilitat. Aquesta configuració optimitzada va permetre reduir d’una manera important el temps d’adquisició i mantenir la resolució espacial necessària per a resoldre l’experiment plantejat. L’experiment de seguiment de la perforació del túnel de la línia L9 del metro de Barcelona va incloure la fabricació i instal·lació dels elèctrodes en pous, i la comparació entre diferents tècniques d’inversió per a l’obtenció dels models de variació de la resistivitat durant la perforació. La construcció i instal·lació dels elèctrodes en els pous es va utilitzar per a establir els aspectes més importants a tenir en compte a l’hora d’escollir el tipus d’instal·lació desitjada, permanent o no permanent. La comparació entre les diferents tècniques d’inversió va permetre identificar la més adient i discriminar entre els canvis de resistivitat deguts a la perforació del túnel i els deguts al propi procés d’inversió. Aquesta tesi suposa una contribució important en tomografia elèctrica, tant per a estudis de caracterització com de seguiment de processos dinàmics. Les estratègies desenvolupades permeten postergar l’elecció de la configuració d’elèctrodes més adient a cada context inclús després de la interpretació dels models de resistivitat i optimitzar les combinacions a enregistrar amb la finalitat d’ajustar el temps d’adquisició a les exigències de cada experiment mantenint una resolució espacial adequada. L’experiment realitzat va permetre establir una metodologia d’actuació en estudis de seguiment de processos dinàmics amb elèctrodes entre pous., [eng] Electrical resistivity tomography is a non-intrusive geophysical technique widely used for subsurface electrical properties characterization and, more recently, for dynamic processes monitoring, both using surface and deep electrodes. A key aspect is the choice of the most suitable configuration in each context. If deep electrodes are used this choice can be difficult because the capabilities of such configurations are not as well established as the surface ones. Besides, in the case of monitoring experiments may be necessary to reduce the data quantity to adjust the acquisition time to the length of the process to be followed. The use of electrical tomography with deep electrodes and its application for monitoring involves placing the electrodes into boreholes and to use new inversion techniques to obtain the resistivity variations models. The main objectives of this thesis is searching acquisition strategies to simplify the choice of the most suitable configuration while reducing the acquisition time, and evaluating different types of electrode installation into boreholes and different inversion techniques to obtain the resistivity variations models in monitoring experiments. In this thesis, two acquisition strategies and the design of an experiment which consisted of monitoring the tunnel drilling of the new metro line, L9, in Barcelona, are presented. The strategies developed here allow delaying the choice of the most suitable electrode configuration even after the interpretation of the resistivity models and optimizing configurations to adjust its acquisition time to the requirements of each experiment maintaining an adequate spatial resolution. The monitoring experiment of the tunnel drilling of the metro line, L9, in Barcelona included the manufacture and installation of the electrodes into boreholes, and the comparison between different inversion techniques to obtain the resistivity variation models. This experiment allowed us to establish a methodology in monitoring experiments with deep electrodes.

In this thesis I present a geophysical and petrological study that aims to define the lithosphere structure and the chemical variations in the compositions in the lithosphere mantle in the Iberian plate, the western Mediterranean and North Africa. Also, the low Pn velocities measured in the western Mediterranean basins and the sub-lithospheric low-velocity anomaly imaged from tomography models in the Iberian plate and North Africa and the relationship with high mean topography are investigated. I present the crust and upper mantle structure along four transects, crossing the NE-Iberian Peninsula, the Western Mediterranean basin and the Algeria margin and ends at the Tell—Atlas Mountains, two profiles crossing the entire Iberian plate in N-S direction and another transect across the southern Central Iberian Zone, the Gibraltar Arc System and the Atlas Mountais. The modeling in the present work is based on an integrated geophysical-petrological methodology combining elevation, gravity, geoid, surface heat flow, seismic and geochemical data. Unlike previous models proposed for the region where the density of the lithospheric mantle is only temperature-dependent, the applied methodology allows inferring seismic velocities and density in the mantle down to 400 km depth from its chemical composition through self-consistent thermodynamic calculations. The crustal structure is mainly constrained by active-source and passive-source seismic experiments, whereas the upper mantle is constrained by tomography models. In lithospheric mantle composition, this methodology allows us to reproduce the main trends of the geophysical observables as well as the inferred P-, Pn- and S-wave seismic velocities from tomography models and seismic experiments available for the study region. The first geo-transect is a new model on the present-day lithospheric structure along a 1100 km crossing the NE-Iberian Peninsula, the Western Mediterranean basin and the Algeria margin and ending at the Tell—Atlas Mountains. Five lithospheric mantle compositions are considered including predominantly average Phanerozoic and lherzolitic Proterozoic in the continental mainland, and more fertile PUM (primitive upper mantle) compositions in the Western Mediterranean basin. The second profile running from the North-Iberian Margin to the Duero basin and is extended to the Alboran basin in the third profile. In this case I have considered four lithospheric mantle compositions: a predominantly average Phanerozoic in the continental mainland, two more fertile compositions in the Alboran Sea and in the Calatrava Volcanic Province, and a hydrated uppermost mantle in the North-Iberian Margin. In the fourth geo-transect, I defined three distinct chemical lithospheric mantle domains: a predominantly average Phanerozoic composition in the continental mainland, and two rather fertile mantle compositions beneath the Volcanic areas, close to the Calatrava Volcanic Province and the Atlas Mountains., The author of this tesis benefits from a four year JAE Pre-CP (2010-00036) fellowship from CSIC between 2010-2014

[spa] Esta Tesis Doctoral se centra en caracterizar la estructura, formación y evolución deformacional y cinemática del anticlinal de Puerta-Pareja en su contexto regional (cinturones de pliegues y cabalgamientos de la cuenca de Loranca y Sierra de Altomira, SW Cadena Ibérica), así como valorar las condiciones de la zona del anticlinal de Puerta-Pareja como posible reservorio para el almacenamiento geológico de CO2. La integración de varios métodos ha permitido superar las limitaciones de cada uno de los estudios individuales aplicados a la zona de estudio. A escala regional se realizó un corte regional E-W y su restitución 2D, el análisis de la historia deformacional a partir de datos de anisotropía de la susceptibilidad magnética (ASM) y el análisis de datos paleomagnéticos y estructurales para detectar posibles rotaciones de eje vertical. A escala local se realizó la reconstrucción 3D del anticlinal de Puerta-Pareja a partir de datos sísmicos, sondeos y de superficie, la restitución de las superficies 3D reconstruidas y el análisis de sus patrones de fracturación. Los resultados del análisis de ASM muestran que las orientaciones de acortamiento paralelo a las capas (layer-parallel shortening) durante la formación de los pliegues y cabalgamientos de Altomira-Loranca en sus sectores Central y Norte fueron aproximadamente E-W, ya evidente durante el depósito de los materiales pre-tectónicos cenozoicos. La integración de datos paleomagnéticos, estructurales y datos previos de otros autores permite concluir que las estructuras en el sector Sur de la cuenca de Loranca se formaron en secuencia de bloque inferior simultáneamente a una rotación de eje vertical de 21º en sentido anti-horario, en el sector Norte las estructuras de la Sierra de Altomira y cuenca de Loranca se formaron en secuencia de bloque superior y durante el Mioceno experimentaron una rotación de eje vertical de 17º en sentido horario, y las estructuras del sector central no rotaron. Por tanto, la oblicuidad de las estructuras de Altomira y Loranca respecto a la Rama Castellano-Valenciana de la Cadena Ibérica es primaria en el sector Central del área estudiada, donde las estructuras se orientan N-S, y en los sectores Norte y Sur la desviación que muestran las estructuras respecto a la orientación N-S (orientaciones NNE-SSW y NNW-SSE, respectivamente) es secundaria. En el sector Sur de la zona estudiada, se observan desacoples de la deformación a favor del nivel de despegue regional entre las estructuras de basamento y cobertera, debido a la rotación de eje vertical de los materiales de la cobertera. Por otro lado, estos estudios permiten precisar la influencia de la Fm. Villalba de la Sierra (Campaniense-Luteciense) en la evolución estructural: mediante su deformación interna inhibió la propagación de varios cabalgamientos hacia unidades superiores y generó desarmonías entre las unidades superiores e inferiores a ella. Se interpretan los efectos de la terminación del nivel de despegue regional (facies Keuper) y de contrafuerte (buttressing) causado por la falla de basamento de Sacedón como los principales condicionantes de la existencia de deformación en secuencia de bloque superior en el sector Norte de Altomira-Loranca. La reconstrucción 3D y la restitución de superficies 3D realizadas en la zona de Puerta-Pareja permiten determinar que el anticlinal de Puerta-Pareja, de orientación general NNE-SSW, se desarrolló fundamentalmente asociado al cabalgamiento de Pareja, de igual orientación, como pliegue de propagación de falla nucleado inicialmente como pliegue de despegue. En el sector Norte del anticlinal, sobre el cabalgamiento de Pareja se desarrolló un cabalgamiento menor, el de La Puerta, lo que define en este sector una configuración de steep-limb breakthrough. El flanco caudal del anticlinal está cortado por otro cabalgamiento menor, el cabalgamiento de Viana, de orientación NNE-SSW, y en el extremo oriental del área estudiada se desarrollaron los cabalgamientos de Villaescusa y Peralveche, de orientación NW-SE. Todos estos cabalgamientos despegaron en los materiales del Keuper, en secuencia de bloque superior. En conjunto, tanto el número de cabalgamientos como sus acortamientos asociados aumentan hacia el Norte. Se interpreta que este aumento se generaría para acomodar la rotación regional horaria experimentada por el conjunto del sector Norte de Altomira-Loranca. Finalmente, la reconstrucción y restitución 3D realizadas han permitido descartar la existencia de ninguna estructura (anticlinal, falla o alto estructural) en el basamento bajo el anticlinal de Puerta-Pareja. Se descarta, por tanto, la existencia de una trampa estructural en el basamento adecuada para el almacenamiento de CO2. La fracturación en el anticlinal de Puerta-Pareja se caracteriza fundamentalmente por dos familias de fracturas, una longitudinal y otra transversal al eje del pliegue, formadas durante el estadio inicial de plegamiento. A partir de las relaciones cronológicas y geométricas entre las rotaciones de eje vertical y las fracturas, se interpreta que el anticlinal de Puerta-Pareja se generó inicialmente con una orientación N-S, perpendicular a la dirección de transporte tectónico regional E-W, y que posteriormente, a causa de pequeñas diferencias locales en la cantidad de rotación en sentido horario experimentada, se generaron las variaciones locales en la orientación del anticlinal de Puerta-Pareja que se observan actualmente., [eng] This Thesis aims to characterize the formation and deformational and kinematic evolution of the Altomira and Loranca fold-and-thrust belts (Altomira Range and Loranca basin, SW Iberian Chain, Central Spain) and the structural configuration and evaluation as a potential reservoir for CO2 sequestration of the Puerta-Pareja anticline, located in the northern sector of the Loranca basin. Several methods were integrated in order to overcome the limitations of every single study in the studied area and to achieve the proposed objetives. Thus, at regional scale, a E-W cross-section and its 2D restoration, an analysis of the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility (AMS) and a paleomagnetic analysis were performed and, focused on the Puerta-Pareja anticline, its 3D reconstruction and restoration and analysis of its fracturation were conducted. The results of the AMS analysis show a general E-W layer-parallel shortening orientation during and shortly prior to the formation of Altomira and Loranca fold-and-thrust belts. Paleomagnetic data from Middle Eocene to Lower Miocene rocks reveal the absence of vertical-axis rotations in the central sector of Loranca-Altomira where structures are oriented N-S, and up to 17º of clockwise and 21º of counter-clockwise vertical-axis rotations in the northern and southern sectors, respectively. The integration of paleomagnetic data with previous structural data from other authors shows that the piggy-back sequence of thrusting at the southern sector was synchronous to the counter-clockwise rotation during the Oligocene, whereas at the northern sector structures formed in a break-back sequence and experienced a clockwise rotation during Miocene. The Puerta-Pareja anticline is a NNE-SSW fault-propagation fold associated to the Pareja thrust and initially nucleated as a detachment fold. At its northern part, the La Puerta thrust cuts its front limb defining a steep-limb breakthrough configuration. Three minor thrusts cut its back limb: the Viana (NNE-SSW), the Villaescusa (NW-SE) and the Peralveche (NW-SE) thrusts. All of these thrusts detached on the Keuper facies following a break back sequence. The 3D reconstruction and restoration of this anticline shows the absence of any basement structure suitable for sequestering CO2 underneath. The analysis of the chronological and geometrical relationships between the fracture pattern (mainly transverse and longitudinal fractures) and the vertical-axis rotation at the Puerta-Pareja area reveals that the initial orientation of the Puerta-Pareja anticline was N-S, perpendicular to the E-W regional shortening direction. Subsequently, local differences in the amount of the clockwise vertical-axis rotation occurred generated the present variability of axial orientations.

La captura i emmagatzematge geològic de CO2 es considera una opció viable per a la reducció de les emissions netes d’aquest gas a l’atmosfera terrestre. El procés consisteix a separar el CO2 de la resta de gasos generats durant l’ús de combustibles fòssils, transportar-lo fins a les plantes d’emmagatzematge i injectar-lo en una formació porosa i permeable que el retindrà, en principi, indefinidament. En aquesta tesi es consideren els aqüífers salins profunds com a reservori de CO2 de referència. La fase d’emmagatzematge requereix que es monitoritzi el subsòl mitjançant tècniques indirectes no destructives, amb l’objectiu de caracteritzar la distribució del CO2 dins el reservori per poder assegurar que la contenció és efectiva i permanent. Entre els mètodes de monitoreig existents, els mètodes elèctrics i electromagnètics són molt convenients, degut a la seva sensibilitat a la conductivitat elèctrica, una propietat física intrínsecament relacionada amb la fracció de volum de fluids conductors presents a la porositat de la roca. Quan s’injecta CO2 al subsòl, la substitució de salmorra (conductora) per gas (resistent) genera un contrast de resistivitat detectable amb mètodes elèctrics i electromagnètics. En funció de la magnitud del canvi, es pot quantificar la saturació de CO2 del reservori. Aquesta tesi centra la seva investigació en els efectes elèctrics d’alguns dels fenòmens que tenen lloc a micro-escala durant el procés d’injecció i emmagatzematge geològic de CO2. L’objectiu principal consisteix a caracteritzar la distribució de resistivitat elèctrica d’una mostra centimètrica de gres de Fontainebleau en dos experiments principals, mitjançant la tècnica de la tomografia elèctrica aplicada a escala de laboratori. Els dos experiments principals d’aquesta investigació inclouen, per un cantó, la quantificació de la saturació de CO2 per a diferents graus de saturació i, per l’altre, el monitoreig del sistema en un experiment de dissolució de CO2 a alta pressió (40 bar). A l’experiment I, la mostra representa una petita fracció d’un aqüífer salí profund (saturat d’una salmorra molt salina) en diferents estadis de l’avanç del plomall de CO2. A l’experiment II, la mostra representa una fracció d’un aqüífer somer (amb una salmorra poc salina) en la qual hi ha hagut una invasió de CO2 des d’un aqüífer proper. Per tal de poder realitzar els experiments plantejats, s’ha dissenyat i muntat un sistema experimental que permet realitzar mesures de tomografia elèctrica a les condicions de pressió requerides, sense haver d’aturar l’experiment. Els dos experiments principals són una de les contribucions més importants d’aquesta tesi, perquè per primer cop s’ha aplicat tomografia elèctrica a escala centimètrica en experiments que involucren CO2. Els resultats han demostrat que el sistema experimental permet obtenir dades significatives i de bona qualitat. Els models resultants de l’experiment I han permès quantificar la saturació de CO2 a l’interior de la porositat de la roca, mentre que l’experiment II ha permès determinar l’augment de la conductivitat de la salmorra degut a la dissolució i dissociació de CO2 al llarg de vuit dies. Així, aquesta tesi suposa una contribució rellevant al camp de l’emmagatzematge geològic de CO2 i al de l’aplicació de la tomografia elèctrica a escala de laboratori, presentant una investigació dels fenòmens elèctrics fruit de la interacció entre els components del sistema roca–salmorra–CO2 a escala centimètrica. Les dades experimentals adquirides, a més, constitueixen una base de coneixement per a la calibració dels models obtinguts amb tècniques elèctriques i/o electromagnètiques de gran escala, o per a la realització de processos d’upscaling., Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is considered a feasible alternative to reduce the net emissions of CO2 to the atmosphere. This thesis is related to the monitoring phase of the process, after CO2 has been injected into the porosity of a reservoir and the evolution of the system and its properties has to be controlled. The main goal of monitoring is to obtain an accurate characterization of the subsurface CO2 accumulation, in order to verify the quantity of injected gas and to detect any possible leakage. Geophysical monitoring of the reservoir is performed from the surface or along boreholes, and thus it becomes necessary to perform laboratory experiments to investigate the behavior of the reservoir rock in relation to CO2, and to calibrate the results of the field scale methods. Electric and electromagnetic methods are especially well-suited for CCS monitoring due to the sensibility of electric resistivity to CO2 saturation. This thesis focuses on two main objectives. Firstly, to design and construct an experimental setup which is able to perform electrical tomography measurements on a centimeter-scale rock sample at various P-T conditions. Secondly, to perform two new experiments related to CO2 monitoring. In the first experiment, we have quantified the CO2 saturation inside a cylindrical (4x8 cm) Fontainebleau rock sample at various CO2 volume fractions, emulating a small fraction of a saline aquifer at different injection stages (the sample was saturated with a highly saline brine). In the second experiment, we have detected and quantified the effects of the dissolution of the CO2 in the brine on the same sample at a pressure of 40 bar during eight days, emulating the invasion of CO2 into a shallow aquifer (the brine used was of low salinity). Both experiments of this thesis represent a contribution to the CCS field, as they highlight some important aspects which are typically neglected, such as the effect of the surface conductivity and the variation of brine conductivity during the experiment. If both factors are ignored, the CO2 saturation will be underestimated by using only the resistivity index method. We have modified the equation to account for these two influences, thus contributing to a more accurate monitoring.

Aquesta tesi es centra en l’estudi de l’escorça cortical en el nord del Marroc, especialment sota de la Serralada del Rif, amb el principal objectiu de cobrir la falta de dades i resultats sobre l’estructura cortical de la zona. Per això, es realitza el processat, modelat i interpretació geològica de dos perfils geofísics de sísmica de gran angle adquirits durant la campanya sísmica RIFSIS (2011) en la Serralada del Rif, que s’han processat posteriorment com a com perfils low­fold. S’ha treballat amb dades de funcions receptores dels projectes Topo-Iberia i PICASSO. També s’ha treballat amb imatges tomografies del mantell superior sota la regió Euro-Mediterrània a partir d’ones Pn. A partir d’aquestes dades s’han pogut obtenir els resultats següents: 1. Dos models de velocitats de propagació d’ones P (Vp) i de la geometria de la Moho. 2. Obtenció d’imatges de l’escorça profunda al llarg dels perfils sísmics i entre els perfils i els dispars a partir dels perfils low-fold. 3. Obtenció d’un mapa de la topografia de la Moho del nord del Marroc a partir de les funcions receptores. 4. Els resultats obtinguts de les tomografies de Pn són altament coincidents amb les imatges tomogràfiques 3-D i mostren significants característiques ben correlacionades amb les estructures geològiques de l’Euro-Mediterrani. Amb aquestes metodologies s’ha pogut documentar una arrel cortical en la part central de la Serralada del Rif, resultats que coincideixen amb l’anomalia negativa de Bouguer observada en la regió. En esta tesis se ha llevado a cabo el monitoreo de diferentes escarpes rocosos, que ha permitido la caracterización y la predicción de los desprendimientos de rocas. Esta caracterización y predicción han sido realizadas a partir de la comparación de nubes de puntos LiDAR obtenidos mediante un instrumento del tipo terrestre (ILRIS- 3D, Optech). La principal ventaja del uso de este tipo de instrumentos es la posibilidad de adquirir datos relativamente precisos (+/- 1 cm) a una distancia considerable (+/- 400 m) sin tener que alterar el comportamiento natural de la pared rocosa y sin que exista ningún riesgo por la instalación de instrumentos en el propio escarpe. En primer lugar se eligió un área de estudio piloto en la cual no existiera riesgo por caídas de rocas y poder de esta manera observar la evolución natural de las zonas inestables de la pared rocosa. Este hecho permitió el desarrollo de metodologías para la caracterización y predicción de los desprendimientos de rocas a partir de los datos LiDAR. La zona elegida fue el área de estudio piloto de Puigcercós, que consiste en el escarpe de coronación de un antiguo deslizamiento ocurrido en el año 1881. Dicho enclave ya estaba siendo monitoreado por el grupo RISKNAT desde el año 2007, y esta tesis supone la continuación del monitoreo y de las investigaciones que se estaban llevando a cabo. Las diferentes metodologías desarrolladas y aplicadas satisfactoriamente en el área de estudio piloto, fueron aplicadas posteriormente en un área con un alto riesgo por desprendimientos de rocas tanto para edificios como para vehículos y personas, la Montaña de Montserrat. En concreto se eligieron dos enclaves críticos, las paredes que se sitúan justo detrás del recinto del Monasterio de Montserrat, cuyo monitoreo comenzó en el año 2011, y las paredes de Degotalls, situadas por encima del aparcamiento de dicho monasterio, y cuyo monitoreo comenzó en el año 2007. El análisis de los datos LiDAR del escarpe de Puigcercós después de 2506 días de monitoreo arroja importantes resultados en el ámbito de la caracterización e inventario de los desprendimientos de rocas, permitiendo la obtención de un listado muy detallado de los eventos ocurridos. Este detallado inventario supone un gran avance para los análisis de la relación M-F de los desprendimientos. Los datos LiDAR también han mostrado resultados relevantes en el ámbito de la predicción de los desprendimientos de rocas de mayor magnitud. En este caso la detección y posterior análisis de la evolución de las deformaciones precursoras han sido claves para la predicción espacial y temporal de los eventos de mayor volumen. Por otra parte, se ha avanzado de manera importante en cuanto a la detección y seguimiento de los denominados desprendimientos precursores, que son otro tipo de indicador precursor de desprendimientos de gran magnitud y que necesitan ser investigados aún en mayor profundidad. En cuanto al monitoreo LiDAR de las mencionadas paredes de la Montaña de Montserrat, la aplicación de las metodologías desarrolladas en Puigcercós ha proporcionado resultados muy satisfactorios. El monitoreo ha permitido obtener un inventario de desprendimientos con un detalle sin precedentes en las paredes analizadas, y la continuación de esta investigación permitirá conocer con un mayor detalle el comportamiento geomorfológico de las paredes de conglomerados. Además, las metodologías aplicadas han permitido la detección de movimientos precursores en dos bloques inestables. El análisis de la evolución de estos desplazamientos en uno de los bloques ha demostrado que se encuentra en un estado crítico cercano al momento de la caída. En conclusión, todos los resultados obtenidos en esta tesis suponen un gran avance hacia la mejor caracterización de los desprendimientos de rocas, y hacia la posible implementación de un instrumento LiDAR Terrestre en un sistema de alerta temprana de desprendimientos., In this thesis we have carried out the monitoring of different rock scarps that have allowed rockfall characterization and prediction. This characterization and prediction has been performed using the comparison of LiDAR point clouds obtained with a ground-based instrument (ILRIS-3D, Optech). The main advantage of this remote sensor is the possibility to acquire relatively accurate data (circa 1 cm) at a great distance (circa 400 m), without changing the natural behavior of the rock slope and without assuming any risk derived from the installation of instruments in the scarp. First, we chose a pilot study area without rockfall risk and which allowed us the observation of the natural evolution of instabilities. This lets the development of methodologies to characterize and predict rockfall events using the LiDAR datasets. The chosen place was the pilot study area of Puigcercos, which consists on the main scarp of an ancient landslide occurred in 1881. This rock face was already being monitored by the RISKNAT group since 2007, and this thesis involves the continuation of this monitoring and this research. The different methodologies developed and successfully applied in the pilot study area, were employed then in an area with a high rockfall risk for both buildings and vehicles and people, Montserrat Mountain. Specifically two critical sites were chosen, the cliffs located just behind Montserrat Monastery, whose monitoring started in 2011; and Degotalls rock face, located behind the parking of the Monastery, whose monitoring started in 2007. a very detailed rockfall list. This detailed inventory is a great improvement in the analysis of M-F relation of rockfalls. Also, the detection of pre-failure deformation and the analysis of its evolution have allowed a great improvement in the spatio-temporal prediction of high magnitude rockfalls. On the other hand, we have improved the detection and monitoring of precursory rockfalls, which is another kind of precursory indicator of high magnitude rockfalls that needs to be further investigated. Regarding the LiDAR monitoring of the Montserrat Mountain rock faces, the application of the processes developed in Puigcercós scarp has provided satisfactory results. This monitoring has allowed obtaining a rockfall inventory with an unprecedented level of detail. Therefore, the continuation of this research will allow improving our comprehension of the geomorphologic behavior of these conglomerate cliffs. Furthermore, the methodologies applied have allowed the detection of pre-failure deformation in two unstable blocks. The analysis of this pre-failure deformation in one of these instabilities has demonstrated its critical condition close to the rockfall. In conclusion, the results obtained in this thesis are a major contribution in rockfall characterization and prediction. These results also provide initial knowledges in order to implement a Terrestrial LiDAR instrument in an early warning system of rockfalls.

Asia Central está dominada por dos importantes orógenos, el orógeno del Zagros y el sistema Himalaya-Tibet, resultantes de de la colisión de las placas Arábiga e India con el margen meridional de la placa Eurasiática. Esta Tesis se focaliza en: 1) la caracterización del manto litosférico a través de un metódo de modelización geofísico-petrológico integrado y 2) el estudio del efecto de la estructura litosférica y de la reología en la deformación neotectónica relacionada con la convergencia de Arabia y de India respecto a Eurasia utilizando una metodología basada en la aproximación de lámina delgada (thin-sheet). En el caso del orógeno del Zagros, los resultados revelan que el manto litosférico se adelgaza debajo de Irán Central, del Alborz y parcialmente debajo de la cordillera del Zagros. En el caso del sistema Himalaya-Tibet, los resultados indican una litosfera engrosada en el sector occidental, debajo de la cordillera Himalaya, Meseta del Tibet, Kunlun Shan y Tian Shan, y un adelgazamiento debajo de las cuencas de Tarim y de Junggar. En el sector oriental los resultados confirman que la Meseta del Tibet está suportada por una litosfera más adelgazada y caliente en el norte que en el sur. Ha sido necesario introducir variaciones laterales de composición mantélica, relacionadas con procesos del manto litosférico superior, en todos los perfiles modelados evidenciando la presencia de diferentes dominios litosféricos. El estudio de la deformación neotectónica ha revelado el rol clave de la reología en la reproducción del campo de esfuerzos y de velocidades en Asia Central, sugiriendo una litosfera menos rígida en la Meseta del Tibet que en la meseta de Irán. En conjunto, la deformación es más rápida en la zona de colisión India-Eurasia que en la zona de colisión Arabia-Eurasia. Finalmente, la presencia de un manto adelgazado en el noreste del Tibet y la consecuente disminución de viscosidad debida al aumento de temperatura explicarían la presencia de fallas extensionales en la Meseta del Tibet y reconciliarían el modelo con los datos de flujo de calor elevado y bajas velocidades sísmicas registrados en la región., The study has been supported by the project ATIZA (CGL2009-09662-BTE), and the FPI grant associated to.

[cat] La serralada de les Bètiques orientals, al sud-est d'Espanya, és una de les àrees sísmicament més actives de la península ibèrica. El sistema de Cisalla de les Bètiques orientals (EBSZ) absorbeix part de la convergència entre les plaques Eurasiàtiques i Africana (Nubia). L'EBSZ és un sistema de falles transpressives senestres format per diverses falles, que de sud a nord són: Carboneras, Palomares, Alhama de Murcia, Carrascoy i Bajo-Segura. La xarxa de GPS CuaTeNeo es va instal•lar l'any 1996 a les Bètiques orientals amb l'objectiu de determinar l'activitat tectònica de l'EBSZ (específicament de les falles de Carboneras, Palomares i Alhama de Murcia). La xarxa està formada per 15 monuments altament estables localitzats a les províncies de Murcia i Almeria. La xarxa s'ha observat cinc vegades: en el 1997, 2002, 2006, 2009 i 2011. Els resultats presentats en aquesta tesi es basen en l'anàlisi de les mesures d'aquestes cinc campanyes (per un període de 15 anys) així com mesures d'estacions GPS contínues de diverses xarxes públiques com la xarxa REGAM, MERISTEMUM, IGN i RAP. A més, s'han inclòs algunes estacions dissenyades especialment per a la detecció de deformacions corticals: l'estació GATA, emplaçada al Cabo de Gata i quatre estacions de la xarxa Topo-Iberia. El tret més important del camp de velocitats GPS obtingut és l'orientació cap al NW de la majoria d'estacions, amb unes taxes de desplaçament de 0,5 a 3 mm/a (respecte Europa occidental). Aquest tipus de deformació indica que la principal força responsable de les velocitats obtingudes està relacionada amb l'actual convergència entre les plaques de Nubia i Euràsia. El camp de deformació obtingut mostra evidències de deformació relacionada amb falles actives dins l'àrea d'estudi. La major part de la deformació es concentra en l'àrea delimitada per les falles d'Alhama de Murcia (AMF) i Palomares (PF), on s'han observat les màximes deformacions per cisalla. La taxa de lliscament horitzontal geodèsica estimada d'1,5±0,3 mm/a pel sistema AMF-PF i orientat oblic a la traça de la falla, indica una combinació de moviment invers i levògir. Aquesta taxa de lliscament màxima s'atribueix a AMF degut a que PF és actualment inactiva o presenta taxes de lliscament molt lentes, imperceptibles en aquest estudi GPS. La instal•lació de l'estació GATA ens ha permès disposar d'observacions continues als dos costats de la zona de falla de Carboneras (CFZ). Per primera vegada, ha estat possible la quantificació geodèsica de la taxa de lliscament de CFZ: una taxa màxima en direcció senestra d'1,3±0,2 mm/a. La coincidència de les taxes geològiques i geodèsiques al llarg de la CFZ, posen de manifest que durant el Quaternari el segment nord de la CFZ ha estat tectònicament actiu i ha estat lliscant a una taxa constant d'1,1 a 1,5 mm/a. Les velocitats GPS obtingudes i el camp de deformació derivat d'aquestes suggereixen una compressió dominant orientada NW-SE, amb una extensió SW-NE en la part SW de l'àrea d'estudi. En aquest sector del SW, prop d'Almeria, la predominança d'émax indica la presència d'una cinemàtica d'aprimament o extensional, relacionada a una tectònica d'escapament de blocs i possiblement a un slab rollback. Aquest treball posa de manifest l'activitat tectònica continua en l'actualitat a les Bètiques orientals i determina que les falles senestres d'Alhama de Murcia i Carboneras són les més actives. Ambdues falles juguen un paper important en la cinemàtica de la convergència de plaques regional., [eng] The eastern Betic Cordillera, south-eastern Spain, is one of the most seismically active area within the Iberian Peninsula. The Eastern Betic Shear Zone (EBSZ) in the Betic Cordillera absorbs part of the convergence between the Eurasia and African (Nubia) plates, stretching for aprox. 250 km from Alicante to Almeria. The EBSZ is a NE-SW transpressive left-lateral trending fault-system that is composed by several individual faults. Listed from south to north: Carboneras, Palomares, Alhama de Murcia, Carrascoy and Bajo-Segura. The CuaTeNeo GPS network was installed in 1996 in the eastern Betics with the main goal of determining the ongoing activity of the EBSZ (specifically of the Carboneras, Palomares and Alhama de Murcia faults). The network consists of 15 highly stable monuments, covering an area of 120x50 km in Murcia and Almeria. The network has been observed five times in 1997, 2002, 2006, 2009 and 2011. The results presented here are based on the analysis of the data of these five campaigns, spanning 15 year long time period and the data from continuous GPS stations of various public networks, such as REGAM, MERISTEMUM, IGN and RAP. In addition, several stations specially designed to detect tectonic crustal deformations have also been included: GATA station from Cabo de Gata and four Topo-Iberia network stations located within the study area. The most prominent feature of the GPS velocity field is the NW oriented motion of the majority of the stations at rates ranging from 0.5 to 3 mm/yr in a western Europe reference frame. This type of deformation indicates that the main driving force responsible for the observed velocities is related to the on-going convergence between Nubia and Eurasia plates. The calculated deformation field shows evidence for localized deformation related to active faults within the area. Most of the observed deformation is concentrated in the area delimited by the Alhama de Murcia (AMF) and Palomares (PF) faults. Here the maximum shear strain rates are observed. An estimated geodetic slip rate of the AMF-PF fault system is 1.5±0.3 mm/yr, oriented obliquely to the strike of the fault and indicating a combination of reverse and sinistral type of motion. We attribute this maximum slip rate to AMF since PF is currently either inactive or is slipping very slowly, at rates that are undetectable by the current GPS station spatial-temporal coverage. The installation of the GATA GPS station at Cabo de Gata has enabled us to obtain continuous observations from both sides of the Carboneras fault zone (CFZ) in the southern part of the study area. For the first time, it was possible to quantify the slip rate of the CFZ: a maximum left-lateral strike slip motion of 1.3±0.2 mm/yr. The coincidence of the geologic and geodetic strike-slip rates along the CFZ, illustrate that during Quaternary the northern segment of the CFZ has been tectonically active and has been slipping at a constant rate ranging from 1.1 to 1.5 mm/yr. GPS velocities and the derived strain rate field suggest a dominant NW-SE oriented compression, with a SW-NE extension in the south-western part of the study area, west of Almeria. In this SW sector the dominance of Erna., indicate a presence of a thinning or extensional kinematics, related to the block escape tectonics and possibly a slab rollback. This work demonstrates the current continuing tectonic activity of the eastern Betics and determines that Alhama de Murcia and Carboneras left-lateral faults are the most active faults. These two faults play an important role in the regional plate convergence kinematics.

The main focus of this work is to build 3-D FEM models with structural complexities in order to simulate volcanic systems in a more realistic way. We use Rabaul as an example to show the application of the methods and strategies proposed to an active volcano. Rabaul caldera is a volcanic system whose dynamics still need to be understood to effectively predict the behavior of future eruptions. In comparison to the simplified analytic models used so far, more realistic models, such as Finite Elements Models (FEMs), are needed to more accurately explain recent deformation and understand the magmatic system. By inverting InSAR data collected between 2007 and 2010 (using linear inversions based on FEMs), we investigate the sources of surface displacement and provide insights about the actual shallow magmatic system. FEMs are numerical models that let us include realistic features such as topography and mechanical heterogeneities. We provide strategies to use geophysical and geological information to build complex 3-D parts and assemble them into 3-D models. We then compare the effects of different material properties configurations and of different source shapes on the deformational signal and on the strength source estimates (fluid flux or pressure). Ultimately, we provide a strategy for performing a linear inversion based on an array of FEM sources that allows us to identify a distribution of flux of fluid (or change in pressure) over a volume, without imposing an a-priori source shape and depth. We use Rabaul as an example to show the 3-D model’s validity and applicability to active volcanic areas. The methodology is based on generating a library of forward numerical displacement solutions, where each entry is the displacement generated by injecting a mass of fluid of known density and bulk modulus into a source of the array. The sources are simulated as fluid-filled cavities that can accept a specified flux of magma. As the array of sources is an intrinsic geometric aspect of all forward models and the sources are activated one at a time, the domain only needs to be discretized once. This strategy precludes the need for remeshing for each activated source and greatly reduces computational requirements. By using an array of sources, we are not investigating the geometric and pressure parameters of a simplified, unique source with a regular shape. Instead, we are investigating a distribution of flux of fluids over a volume of potential sources responsible for the pressure changes in the medium as dictated by the data. The results allow us to image the complex shape of the deformation source without having to use any a-priori or simplified sources. This takes source modeling a step towards more realistic source models. The application of the methodology to Rabaul shows a shallow magmatic system under the caldera made of two interconnected lobes located at the two opposite sides of the caldera. These lobes are suggested to be the feeding reservoirs of the ongoing Tavuvur volcano eruption, on the eastern side, and of the past Vulcan volcano eruptions, on the western side. The interconnection and spatial distribution of sources find correspondence in the petrography of the products described in literature and in the dynamics of the single and twin eruptions that characterize the caldera. The good results obtained from the application of the method show that the proposed linear inversion based on the FEM array of sources can be considered suitable for generating models of the magmatic system. It can be easily applied to any volcano, because it accounts for volcano deformation without having to specify the shape of the deformation source prior to inversion., El objetivo principal de este trabajo es la construcción de modelos de elementos finitos (FEMs) 3-D con complejidades estructurales con el fin de simular sistemas volcánicos de manera más realista. Como ejemplo de aplicación se ha escogido la caldera de Rabaul, un sistema volcánico cuya dinámica no se comprende por completo. Invirtiendo los datos de InSAR recogidos durante los años 2007-2010, investigamos las fuentes de desplazamiento de la superficie y proporcionamos claves de relevancia sobre el sistema magmático superficial real. Incluyendo características realistas, como la topografía y heterogeneidades mecánicas, usamos las informaciones geofísicas y geológicas para construir modelos de FEMs complejos en 3D. En última instancia, proporcionamos una estrategia para llevar a cabo una inversión lineal basada en una matriz de fuentes que nos permite identificar una distribución de flujo de fluido a través de un volumen de posibles fuentes responsables de los cambios de presión en el medio según lo dictado por los datos, sin imponer a priori una forma de fuente específica y su profundidad. Los resultados permiten generar imágenes de la forma compleja de la fuente que da lugar a la deformación, en el espacio y en el tiempo, sin tener que utilizar ninguna fuente con una forma excesivamente simplificada a priori. Esto lleva el modelado de fuentes un paso adelante hacia modelos más realistas. En el caso de Rabaul, la aplicación de la metodología discutida anteriormente, muestra un sistema magmático superficial formado por dos lóbulos interconectados localizados bajo la caldera y en posiciones diametralmente opuestas. La interconexión y la distribución espacial de las fuentes encuentran correspondencia en la petrología de los productos descritos en literatura y en la dinámica de las erupciones que caracterizan la caldera. Los resultados obtenidos mediante la aplicación del método son satisfactorios y demuestran que la inversión lineal basada en la matriz de fuentes de FE propuesta puede ser considerada adecuada para generar modelos de sistemas magmáticos. Se puede aplicar fácilmente a cualquier volcán, ya que tiene en cuenta la deformación del edificio sin tener que especificar la forma de la fuente de deformación antes de la inversión.

El mètode magnetotel·lúric (MT) és una tècnica geofísica que proporciona la distribució de la resistivitat elèctrica en el subsòl a partir de les fluctuacions temporals del senyal electromagnètic (EM) natural mesurades a la superfície terrestre. El senyal MT sovint esdevé contaminat per soroll EM d’origen antropogènic (soroll cultural). La seva detecció i eliminació és un dels reptes actuals per millorar la qualitat de les respostes obtingudes amb el mètode MT. L’estudi de les característiques del senyal MT i del soroll cultural és un pas clau per poder diferenciar ambdós senyals i eliminar posteriorment el soroll. En general el senyal MT no presenta un estat de polarització concret en el domini temps-freqüència (t-f), ara bé, algunes de les seves fonts naturals com les pulsacions geomagnètiques del tipus Pc3 o les ressonàncies Schumann es caracteritzen pel seu estat de polarització. En canvi, el soroll cultural sol estar polaritzat linealment en una direcció determinada a causa de la posició fixa de les seves fonts a l’espai. Tenint en compte que l’estat de polarització del senyal MT està estretament lligat a les característiques de les seves fonts, en aquesta tesi es proposa la seva anàlisi com a eina per identificar i caracteritzar algunes de les seves fonts naturals i les fonts de soroll cultural que el contaminen. Atès que tant el senyal MT com el soroll cultural són senyals variables amb el temps i presenten múltiples freqüències, s’ha considerat adient analitzar el seu estat de polarització en el domini temps-freqüència (t-f). La principal contribució d’aquesta tesi és el desenvolupament, per primer cop, d’un mètode per analitzar l’estat de polarització del senyal MT en el domini (t-f) a partir de les sèries temporals dels camps elèctric i magnètic. S’han establert les bases teòriques del mètode, que permet obtenir els atributs de polarització d’ambdós camps en el domini (t-f) mitjançant la transformada wavelet, i s’ha implementat en un codi anomenat MTWAVELETS. El mètode desenvolupat s’ha aplicat a l’anàlisi de nombroses sèries temporals MT mesurades a diferents localitzacions i que presenten o bé indicis de soroll cultural o bé indicis de la presència de senyals geomagnètics amb un estat de polarització determinat. A partir de l’anàlisi de sèries temporals MT mesurades a Hontomín (Espanya) i a Lamezia Terme (Itàlia) s’ha detectat el soroll cultural creat per línies elèctriques, la circulació de trens per vies fèrries electrificades amb corrent continu, aerogeneradors i entorns industrials i urbans, i s’ha determinat la posició relativa d’aquestes fonts respecte els punts de mesura. S’ha caracteritzat el comportament que presenten l’amplitud i els atributs de polarització d’aquests senyals sorollosos en el domini (t-f), de manera que a partir d’ara pot identificar-se fàcilment la presència d’aquestes fonts contaminants a sèries temporals MT. D’altra banda, l’anàlisi de dades mesurades a Tramutola (Itàlia) ha suggerit que les pulsacions geomagnètiques del tipus Pc3 són una de les causes de l’oscil·lació que presenten les respostes MT en aquest site en el domini (t-f). Així mateix, s’han detectat i analitzat els quatre primers modes de les ressonàncies Schumann a partir de sèries temporals MT mesurades a Huidobro (Espanya). L’anàlisi (t-f) dels seus atributs de polarització ha permès diferenciar aquest senyals geomagnètics de la resta del senyal MT. La nova eina desenvolupada en aquesta tesi constitueix una aportació significativa per a l’anàlisi del senyal MT, ja que permet detectar i caracteritzar les seves fonts, ja siguin naturals o de soroll. Té nombroses aplicacions: en l’àmbit de la millora de les respostes MT per a la identificació del soroll cultural i de senyals geomagnètics que puguin alterar-les, i en l’estudi de la ionosfera i la magnetosfera per a la caracterització de senyals geomagnètics., The magnetotelluric (MT) signal is usually affected by electromagnetic anthropogenic noise (cultural noise). At present, its detection and removal is one of the challenges to improve the responses of the MT method. The MT signal does not generally have a specific polarisation state in the time-frequency (t-f) domain. However, some of its natural sources such as Pc3 geomagnetic pulsations or Schumann resonances have characteristic polarisation properties. In contrast, cultural noise is usually linearly polarised in a certain direction due to the fixed location of its sources in space. The major contribution of this thesis is the development, for the first time, of a method for polarisation analysis of the MT signal in the (t-f) domain. It is proposed as a tool to identify and characterise some of its natural sources and those of cultural noise. It provides the polarisation attributes of the MT signal in the (t-f) domain computed in terms of the wavelet transform, since both the MT signal and the cultural noise show time and frequency variations. The theoretical basis of the method has been established, and it has been implemented in a code named MTWAVELETS. Cultural noise created by power lines, electrified DC railways, wind turbines and industrial areas has been detected and characterised from the analysis of MT time series acquired at Hontomín (Spain) and Lamezia Terme (Italy). The analysis of MT time-series from Tramutola (Italy) points to Pc3 pulsations as one of the causes of the oscillation of the MT responses in the (t-f) domain at this site. Moreover, the first four modes of the Schumann resonances were detected and analysed from MT time-series acquired at Huidobro (Spain). The new tool developed in this thesis is a major contribution to the analysis of the MT signal since it allows detecting and characterising its sources, both natural and noisy. It has many applications: in the scope of improving the quality of the MT responses due to the identification of cultural noise and geomagnetic signals capable of altering them, and in the scope of the study of the ionosphere and the magnetosphere due to the characterisation of geomagnetic signals.

El tensor de impedancias es el elemento matemático que condensa los datos en Magnetotelúrica. No obstante solemos verlo representado en forma matricial, representación que no ofrece toda la información que se puede recabar del mismo. Las álgebras de Clifford son un grupo asociativo que establece un sistema algebraico donde el tensor queda mejor caracterizado, dotándolo de significado geométrico. En este contexto, considerar el propio tensor y sus trasformaciones como elementos del álgebra, además de reproducir de manera compacta y sencilla las relaciones habituales, abre la posibilidad de dilucidar nuevos conceptos y relaciones que están aparentemente ocultos en el tensor. El análisis en el contexto de las álgebras de Clifford C13 ha permitido descomponer el tensor de impedancias en sus elementos algebraico-geométricos más simples, ello ha facilitado hallar siete invariantes de rotación irreducibles e independientes. En el contexto del álgebra de Clifford C12 se ha representado la distorsión galvánica mediante una descomposición en sus elementos algebraico-geométrico más simples. Se observa que una de las subálgebras de C13 dota de significancia a la invariancia del phase tensor con la distorsión galvánica. El análisis en C12 ha permitido unificar las diferentes representaciones del tensor de impedancias, siendo los Diagramas de Mohr y el phase tensor las más representativas. Del análisis del phase tensor se han deducido los índices Indexe, Index2 y el Phase Sensitive Strike. En particular los índices Indexe y Index2 han permitido establecer nuevos criterios de dimensionalidad. A partir de estructuras algebraicas del tensor de impedancias en Clifford C12, se han deducido unas relaciones a partir de las cuales se ha desarrollado un algoritmo para determinar y corregir la distorsión galvánica en el caso general 3D cuando, a periodos pequeños, el tensor de impedancias regional tiene un comportamiento 2D o 1D (y determinados casos 3D). El algoritmo para la determinación de la distorsión galvánica consiste en una búsqueda estocástica de los parámetros de distorsión twist, shear y anisotropy con ciertas constricciones que se imponen al tensor regional libre de distorsión. Se ha diseñado un algoritmo, el Método Perturbativo, para la determinación del strike una vez identificados los periodos pequeños 2D. Se considera que la dispersión en la dirección del strike de los periodos pequeños 2D es debida al ruido (Gaussiano), por lo que el algoritmo consiste en generar aleatoriamente valores del tensor según una distribución Gaussiana equivalente al ruido, en estos primeros periodos 2D, hasta conseguir un strike común a todos ellos. Este procedimiento permite, además, corregir aquellos periodos que, aun siendo 2D, no cumplen las condiciones establecidas en los criterios de dimensionalidad, aumentando así la aplicabilidad de los métodos de determinación de la distorsión galvánica. Se ha desarrollado un programa denominado MITT que recoge, además de las metodologías para determinar la distorsión galvánica, diferentes herramientas que giran en torno a las representaciones del tensor de impedancias: Curvas de resistividad aparente y fases, diagramas de Mohr y la generación de funciones densidad de probabilidad de Indexe Index2 y Phase Sensitive Strike. In this way, not only are the already known procedures reproduced but also new concepts and relationships hidden in the tensor are now elucidated. In the frame of Clifford Algebra C/3, the magnetotelluric tensor is expressed in terms of its simplest geometric-algebraic components. In this way, seven irreducible independent rotation invariants are deduced. Galvanic distortion is represented in Cl2 Clifford Algebra. An analysis of the subalgebras in C/3 recognises a particular subalgebra as the one giving meaning to the independence of the phase tensor with the galvanic distortion. The Mohr diagrams and the phase tensor are analysed in the context of Clifford Algebra Cl2. The indexes Indexi, Index2 and the Phase Sensitive Strike are deduced from the phase tensor in Cl2. In particular, Indexi and Index2, which are independent of galvanic distortion and rotation, have enabled to introduce new criteria for the analysis of the dimensionality. In Clifford algebra Cl2, a number of relationships have been found, from which a method to determine the galvanic distortion in the 3D case, with the assumption that the regional tensor has a 2D or 1D (and certain 3D cases) behaviour at short periods, has been developed. The method is based on a constrained stochastic heuristic method, which consists of exploring randomly the full space of the distortion parameters twist, shear and anisotropy. A method to find the strike of the 2D short periods is developed. A different strike angle for each period can be obtained in a 2D case because of noise. In this way we expect to recover the strike direction perturbing the data for each period with a similar random Gaussian distribution to achieve a common strike for all the short periods. The program MITT (Magnetotelluric Impedance Tensor Tools) is carried out. The program is based on the methodology developed to determine the galvanic distortion in a regional 3D case. In addition, MITT offers different useful tools about the representations of the impedance tensor: Apparent resistivities and phases, Mohr diagrams and probability density functions. [spa] En esta tesis doctoral se presentan los resultados obtenidos a partir de la interpretación litológica y caracterización petrofísica de formaciones geológicas favorables para el sellado y almacén geológico de CO2 en diversas cuencas de la Península Ibérica. La metodología seguida comprende el estudio e interpretación conjunta de registros geofísicos de sondeos (diagrafías) pertenecientes a sondeos someros tipo "slimhole", y de registros pertenecientes a sondeos antiguos y profundos de petróleo. Para completar dicha interpretación se han utilizado otras técnicas como ensayos de campo y de laboratorio, análisis al microscopio de muestras en lámina delgada y de Difracción de Rayos X. Mediante el registro de Radioactividad Gamma Natural (GR) principalmente, se llevó a cabo una correlación estratigráfica entre las formaciones de los sondeos someros y las formaciones análogas en los sondeos profundos próximos. Posteriormente, se procedió a estudiar en paralelo la litología y la petrofísica de cada uno de ellos, para poder establecer analogías entre las diversas formaciones en superficie y en profundidad. El análisis e interpretación de los registros de imagen de sondeo, ha permitido determinar la frecuencia de fracturación localizando en profundidad zonas con debilitamiento estructural, susceptibles de ser permeables, estableciendo la idoneidad de la zona sello y almacén. A partir del registro sónico de onda completa y aplicando una técnica reciente mediante el estudio de la atenuación de las ondas sónicas, se ha estimado el parámetro lk-Seis según la metodología de Mari & Guillemot, 2012. Los atributos acústicos, necesarios para calcular dicho parámetro, han comprendido la atenuación (Att) y la ampliltud (A) de la señal acústica, por lo que fue necesario un estudio pormenorizado de las señales sónicas registradas. Este parámetro acústico ha permitido localizar zonas permeables a lo largo de las formaciones estudiadas en los sondeos someros. La caracterización petrofísica de las formaciones geológicas almacén se ha complementado con la realización de ensayos en laboratorio de conductividad hidráulica en célula triaxial, obteniéndose el valor de la permeabilidad hidráulica (Kw), la porosidad efectiva (0e) y total (09 y la superficie específica (Ss). Dichos resultados de laboratorio, han sido correlacionados con los estimados en campo a partir de ensayos de permeabilidad Lugeon, y con las identificaciones estructurales de la pared del sondeo llevadas a cabo a partir de la imagen acústica de sondeo, siendo integrados finalmente a los resultados derivados del estudio de la porosidad sónica y observaciones de permeabilidad a partir de las diagrafías., [eng] The results obtained from the lithological interpretation and petrophysical characterization of seal and reservoirs formations in the Iberian Peninsula basins for CO2 storage are presented in this PhD. The methodology has involved a complete well logging data set interpretation acquired at slim-hole and shallow boreholes, as well as vintage hydrocarbons logging data interpretation. Other techniques as field tests and laboratory analysis, thin section studies and X-Ray Diffraction analysis have been applied to complete the log interpretation and rock characterization. Stratigraphic correlation between the geological formations in shallow boreholes and similar formations in oil boreholes has been carried out using Natural Gamma Radioactivity (GR) log. Subsequently, a lithological and petrophysical studies were conducted to draw analogies between both types of wells. The analysis and interpretation of acoustic borehole image allowed determining the frequency of fracturing in depth, which was used to locate areas with structural weakening, establishing the suitability of the seal and store area. This information is useful to delineate permeable areas as well. To contrast and complete this information, full wave sonic datasets were analysed focusing on the attenuation of the sonic waves. This is a recent methodology introduced by Mari & Guillemot (2012) that provided the Ik-Seis factor. Combining this factor with other seismic parameters such as attenuation (Att) and amplitude (A) parameters of the acoustic signal has allowed locating permeable zones along the shallow formations studied. The petrophysical characterization of storage geological formations has been complemented by hydraulic conductivity tests that provide hydraulic permeability values (Kw), total effective porosity (0e), total porosity (0t) and specific surface (Ss). These laboratory results were correlated with results from field Lugeon permeability tests, as well as structural identifications from acoustic borehole image, and finally, being integrated with the sonic porosity and permeability results and observations from the well logs.

This thesis is organized as a compendium of three scientific articles, describing the geological characterization of the Hontomín site for Geological Storage of CO2 by means of 3D seismic data, acquired for this purpose, as well as the available well-log and regional data. The three articles form the core of this thesis and constitute the main scientific effort developed therein. Tectonophysics (accepted). The thesis begins with an Introduction (Chapter I), in which the motivations and aims of the thesis are presented. These include the problematic derived from anthropogenic emissions of CO2, and present Carbon Capture and Storage technology as an effective method to reach energetic sustainability. This chapter also includes the state-of-the-art seismic reflection method applied to CO2 storage, as well as an outline of the regional and local geology of the study area. The first article (Alcalde et al., 2013a) constitutes Chapter II of the thesis. It presents and describes the active seismic experiments conducted at the Hontomín site for the seismic characterization. The data acquisition is described in detail, with an emphasis on the most relevant factors that affected the quality of the acquired data. These factors include the geomorphological/topographical aspects of the study area, logistical issues during the acquisition. The effects on the seismic records of a near-surface velocity inversion are also discussed. This contribution also shows a preliminary seismic image of the subsurface, which allows outlining the general dome shape of the target structure. The second article (Alcalde et al., 2013b) comprises Chapter III of the thesis. It outlines the processing applied to the seismic data that led to the final migrated seismic image. It includes a detailed discussion about which processes were more effective in enhancing the quality of the obtained image. The image was judged to be suitable for interpretation and constitutes the primary seismic model, to be used as reference baseline during the monitoring stage. Furthermore, the top of the Jurassic dome structure was mapped, allowing us to provide an overall estimation of the size of the target structure, which is a 107 m2 elongated dome with a maximum CO2 storage capacity of 1.2 Gt. The third article (Alcalde et al., 2014), included in Chapter IV of the thesis, focuses on the interpretation of the seismic image and the building of a 3D geological model. The quality of the seismic data required a geologically driven approach to enable interpretation. This approach used a conceptual model as reference, which was inferred in the first place from the correlation of the available well-log data and later improved by the seismic facies analysis and the regional geological data. The conceptual model was used to interpret the seismic data and resulted in a 9-layered 3D geological model and a thorough description of the fault system present in the area., Esta tesis tiene como objetivo la caracterización geológica 3D de la Planta de Desarrollo Tecnológico para el Almacenamiento Geológico de CO2 de Hontomín (Burgos). Esta caracterización se ha llevado a cabo mediante el procesado y la interpretación de datos de sísmica de reflexión 3D adquiridos para ese propósito en verano de 2010.

El método magnetotelúrico es una técnica geofísica que permite caracterizar las estructuras del subsuelo en base a la distribución de la resistividad eléctrica. Este parámetro físico es muy sensible a pequeños cambios en la composición de un determinado volumen de roca, por lo que estará fuertemente condicionado por factores como la naturaleza y composición de la roca, la porosidad, la proporción de poros saturados, las características del fluido de saturación, la presión o la temperatura. Este hecho hace que su caracterización sea especialmente atractiva durante la etapa de exploración de reservorios geológicos. De entre los métodos electromagnéticos, la magnetotelúrica destaca por ser el único capaz de aportar información sobre las características del subsuelo a profundidades de varios kilómetros. Por esta razón, será el único método electromagnético aplicable al estudio de reservorios profundos, como son por ejemplo, la mayoría de los sistemas geotérmicos, los posibles almacenes geológicos de CO2 o los acuíferos profundos. En esta tesis se presentan los modelos geoeléctricos obtenidos del estudio de dos reservorios geológicos distintos: un posible almacén geológico de CO2 (Anticlinal de El Hito, Cuenca) y un sistema geotérmico convencional (Tenerife, Islas Canarias). Asimismo, se analiza y se expone la metodología empleada para la correcta caracterización de cada una de las estructuras. Los resultados obtenidos son significativos y aportan información relevante sobre la morfología y localización de estructuras tan importantes como son, según el caso, el sello de los reservorios, posibles fallas o posibles cámaras magmáticas. Adicionalmente, se ha realizado en ambos casos un análisis de la respuesta magnetotelúrica de las estructuras. Así, cada estudio aporta además información sobre la metodología de inversión empleada para obtener resultados válidos y satisfactorios. Esta tesis supone, para el caso del estudio del sistema geotérmico de Tenerife, la primera etapa de los trabajos a realizar. El modelo aquí presentado, ha sido interpretado en el contexto de un sistema geotérmico y comparado con otros modelos geofísicos y geológicos. Aún así, y teniendo en cuanta la cantidad y la variedad de los estudios que se han llevado a cabo en la isla de Tenerife (geoquímica, geofísica, geología), será necesario, para extraer toda la información que el modelo puede aportar, examinar el modelo de resistividades conjuntamente con la información que no ha podido ser incluida en este trabajo., The magnetotelluric method (MT) uses naturally occurring electromagnetic field variations as a source for imaging the electrical resistivity structure of the earth. Electrical resistivity is a physical property dominated by the presence of minor phases in the host rock matrix, so it will be strongly influenced by factors such as the nature and composition of the rock, the porosity, the proportion of saturated pore fluid characteristics of saturation, pressure or temperature. This characterization makes it especially attractive during the exploration stage of geological reservoirs. Among electromagnetic methods, magnetotelluric is the only one able to provide information about the characteristics of the subsoil at depths of several kilometres. Therefore, MT is the suitable electromagnetic method for the study of deep reservoirs, such as geothermal systems, CO2 geological reservoirs or deep aquifers. In this thesis the MT method has been applied to characterize the geoelectrical structures below two different reservoirs: a potential CO2 geological reservoir (El Hito Anticline, Cuenca, Spain) and a conventional geothermal system (Tenerife, Canary Islands). In addition, a comprehensive analysis of the methodology used for obtain a suitable geoelectrical model of each structure is exposed. The results obtained are significant and provide relevant information on the morphology and location of the most important structures, such as the seal, faults or the magma chambers. Moreover, an analysis of the magnetotelluric response of each structure has been carried out. Thus, each study provides information about the inversion methodology used to obtain valid and satisfactory results. In the case of the Tenerife geothermal system study, this thesis is the first stage of the work to be carried. The resistivity model presented here has been interpreted in the context of a geothermal system and compared with other geophysical and geological models. Nevertheless, and taking into account the number and variety of studies have been conducted on the island of Tenerife (geochemistry, geophysics, geology), it is necessary review the resistivity model jointly with that information that could not be included in this work.

La península ibérica representa el extremo más occidental del cinturón orogénico Alpino-Himalayo y está caracterizada por la colisión entre la placa africana (Nubia) y la euroasiática. La convergencia entre estas dos placas tiene una orientación oblicua (~NW-SE) respecto al límite de placas con una tasa de aproximadamente 5 mm/año. La sismicidad actual en la península ibérica está concentrada principalmente en la cordillera Bética y en los Pirineos. Esta sismicidad implica la presencia de esfuerzos corticales causados por el movimiento de las placas tectónicas y/o deformaciones corticales locales que se pueden analizar utilizando la metodología de la geodesia espacial, y en particular con las observaciones GPS. Ambas zonas, aunque con regímenes tectónicos muy dispares, han sido analizadas en este estudio a partir de observaciones GPS. Las técnicas de geodesia espaciales aplicadas al estudio de la deformación cortical en combinación con la modelización numérica nos han permitido abordar los objetivos principales de la tesis: determinar el campo de velocidades GPS para los Pirineos y las Béticas, y configurar un modelo de bloques que explique la cinemática del límite de placas entre África y Eurásica en la región Ibero-Magrebí. Los nuevos datos de la red GPS del proyecto Topo-Iberia, en el cual se enmarca la tesis, han sido incorporados en ambas áreas de estudio. Para el estudio de la deformación activa de los Pirineos se han analizado 3,5 años de observaciones GPS de 35 estaciones continuas en la región. Se ha encontrado una extensión activa significativa perpendicular a la cordillera de 2,5±0,5 nstrain/año, con una posible tasa de deformación más elevada concentrada en la parte más occidental de la cordillera. Los resultados obtenidos están de acuerdo con los mecanismos focales predominantemente normales que ocurren en la zona y sugieren un intervalo de recurrencia de 2.200-2.500 años para un terremoto de magnitud 6,5. Se sugiere que la extensión obtenida en este estudio probablemente es debida al rebote isostático producido por el levantamiento y erosión de la cordillera y/o por un proceso de relajación causada por colapsos gravitacionales. Para la modelización numérica de la cinemática del límite de placas de la región Ibero-Magrebí se ha obtenido el campo de velocidades GPS a partir de los campos de velocidades existentes en la región. Se ha construido un modelo de bloques elástico a partir del campo de velocidades obtenido que describe la geodinámica de la zona y muestra que la deformación principal ocurre en el dominio Bético-Rif-Alborán. El modelo propuesto consta de 5 bloques: dos bloques que representan las placas africana y euroasiática respectivamente, un bloque que engloba el Rif y el mar de Alborán, otro bloque con las Béticas Centrales y Orientales, y un bloque con las Béticas más Orientales. Según el modelo propuesto las principales zonas de deformación, correspondientes a las fallas que definen los bloques propuestos por el modelo, son: 1) la falla que se extienden desde el Golfo de Cádiz hasta las Béticas Orientales con orientación aproximadamente E-W caracterizada por un movimiento dextral; 2) las fallas que corresponden a la zona de cizalla Trans-Alboran con orientación NE-SW, caracterizada por un movimiento sinistro con una pequeña componente extensiva; 3) las fallas del sur del Rif y norte de Argelia con comportamiento transpresivo, y 4) la falla que se alinea con las fallas pliocenas y cuaternarias paralelas a la línea de costa andaluza con comportamiento dextral. Basándonos en los resultados obtenidos en esta tesis, proponemos que las velocidades GPS podrían estar justificadas por la subducción aún activa hacia el este bajo el estrecho de Gibraltar de una slab y un roll-back asociado que provocaría la extensión del back-arc, situado en las Béticas Orientales., Himalayan orogenic belt and is characterized by the collision between the Africa and Nubia plates. The convergence between these plates has a ~NW-SE orientation, oblique to the plate boundary, with a rate of 5 mm/yr. The seismicity of the Iberian Peninsula is mainly concentrated in the Betics and Pyrenees mountain ranges. This seismicity indicates the presence of crustal stresses, which cause the plate tectonics movement and/or local crustal deformations, which could be analyzed using space geodetic techniques, particularly using GPS observations. The main goals of the given thesis include the determination of the GPS velocity field of the Pyrenees and Betic mountain belts and, the development of a new elastic block model that explains the kinematics of the plate boundary in the Iberian-Maghrebian region. These objectives were achieved using the methodology of space geodesy applied to crustal deformation studies, and using three-dimensional numerical modeling techniques. The data of a new GPS network installed as part of the Topo-Iberia project was included in the study of the Pyrenees and the Ibero-Maghrebian region. In order to analyze the present day crustal deformations in the Pyrenees, we analyze data from 35 continuous stations located within the mountain range, spanning 3.5-year period. Our results indicate a presence of statistically significant ongoing extension of 2.5±0.5 nstrain/yr perpendicular to the main axis of the Pyrenees, with the possibility of higher strain rates concentrated in the westernmost part of the range. This finding is in agreement with the predominantly normal faulting focal mechanisms of earthquakes that occur in the area. Using the GPS measured extension rates, we estimate that the recurrence time for magnitude 6.5 earthquakes equals 2200–2500 yr. We suggest that the extension obtained in this study could be the result of an isostatic rebound produced by the uplift and erosion of the mountain range or a process of relaxation caused by gravitational collapse, or both. To study the kinematics of the plate boundary in the Iberian-Maghrebian region, we estimated the velocity field from the combination of all of the published GPS velocities, including the velocity estimates form the Topo-Iberia network. We design a new elastic block model from the velocity field, which explains the geodynamic behavior of this complex plate boundary. The model shows that the principal deformation are concentrate at the Betic-Rif-Alboran domain. The proposed model consists in 5 blocks: two blocks that represents the African and Eurasian plates, a block which includes the Rif and the Alboran sea, a block with the Central and Eastern Betics, and finally a block with the easternmost part of the Betics range. The principal faults which separate blocks are: 1) a right-lateral behavior of the fault with E-W orientation from Gulf of Cadiz to the eastern Betics; 2) the system of faults of Trans-Alboran Shear Zone with a NE-SW orientation has a left-lateral movement with a low extensional component; 3) the transpresive behavior of the Rif and north Argelia faults; 4) the parallel to the Andalusian coast faults have a right lateral movement. Based on the model results, we suggest that GPS velocities support a geodynamic model that supports a continued active slab subduction beneath the Strait of Gibraltar, with a consequent back-arc extension in the eastern Betics.

[spa] La tesis que presento se centra en el estudio de la estructura cortical y de los procesos de formación de la cuenca del Tirreno, con el principal propósito de ampliar el conocimiento sobre los mecanismos involucrados en la evolución de márgenes divergentes. Para ello, en esta tesis se realiza el procesado, análisis, modelización, e interpretación geológica de dos perfiles geofísicos adquiridos durante la campaña de sísmica marina MEDOC (2010) en el mar Tirreno. Ambos perfiles geofísicos incluyen datos de sísmica de gran ángulo (SGA), de reflexión multicanal (SRM) y de gravimetría, a partir de los cuales he obtenido los resultados siguientes: 1.Dos modelos de velocidad de propagación de ondas P (Vp) y de la geometría del Moho. 2.Análisis estadístico de incertidumbre de los parámetros de cada modelo de velocidad. 3.Modelado gravimétrico a partir de la conversión a densidad de los modelos de Vp. Con este método se pretende constreñir la petrología de los diferentes dominios geológicos a partir del empleo de diferentes relaciones empíricas de velocidad-densidad para diferentes tipos de roca. 4.Dos perfiles de SRM stackados y migrados en tiempo, de los cuales procesé uno de ellos (MEDOC 4). La interpretación conjunta de estos resultados junto con un análisis exhaustivo de las velocidades de los modelos, e información geológica de las rocas del lecho marino, han permitido caracterizar la naturaleza cortical (continental/oceánico) de los principales dominios geológicos en la cuenca del Tirreno central, los cuales incluyen: corteza continental, corteza de retroarco de carácter magmático y manto exhumado. Estos resultados junto con observaciones de la geomorfología de la batimetría, han dado paso a la discusión de la distribución en planta de dichos dominios geológicos en toda el área de estudio. Finalmente, propongo un modelo de apertura de cuenca en el cual se especula sobre la formación de los diferentes dominios geológicos identificados anteriormente. Dicho modelo se basa en los modos de apertura de cuencas de retroarco propuestos para las cuencas del Pacífico occidental, y en estudios de modelización numérica realizados para explicar la exhumación del manto en los márgenes pasivos del Atlantico Norte., [eng] In this thesis I present a geophysical study that aims to define the structure and petrological nature of the main geological domains in the Central Tyrrhenian basin, and to investigate the mechanisms involved in their formation. The geophysical data used in this thesis was acquired during the MEDOC (2010) survey within the framework of the MEDOC project, which was designed to improve our understanding of the origin and evolution of rifted margins. The present work is based on the analysis, processing, modeling, and interpretation of coincident Wide-Angle Seismic (WAS), Multichannel Seismic (MCS), and gravity data corresponding to the two longest transects acquired during the MEDOC survey in the Central Tyrrhenian basin, the southern Line GH/MEDOC-6 (~450 km) and the northern Line EF/MEDOC-4 (~400 km). Both lines run across the Central Tyrrhenian basin from Sardinia to the Campania margin. The processing of MCS data provides the tectonic structure and geometry of the sedimentary basins, whereas the modeling of WAS data from travel-time tomography provides 2D seismic velocity models from which the velocity distribution of the crust and uppermost mantle, and the geometry of the crust-mantle boundary are inferred. The WAS models are then converted to density models using existing empirical relationships for different lithologies in order to test which of the different hypothesis concerning the petrological nature of the basement (e.g. continental/oceanic crust or exhumed mantle) explain better the observed gravity data. The results obtained together with the integration of geological data from rock sampling of the seabed reveals the existence of three geological domains in the Central Tyrrhenian, that is: continental crust, magmatic crust, and exhumed mantle. The comparison between the results of Line EF/MEDOC-4 (northern line) with those of the Line GH/MEDOC-6 (southern line) reveals that the velocity and tectonic structure of the three geological domains differ in some regions from north to south. These differences are most likely attributed to the southward increase of extension that characterizes the Tyrrhenian basin. The basement configuration presented in this thesis led to a completely new definition of geological domains in the Central Tyrrhenian. According to the presented distribution of the basement, rifting in the Central Tyrrhenian basin would have started with continental crust extension, continued with back-arc spreading leading to generation of magmatic back-arc crust, and followed by mantle exhumation intruded by later magmatic episodes. The interpretation of these results differ from current conceptual models of the formation of rifting systems involving mantle exhumation and indicate that the response of the continental lithosphere to extension processes may be more complex than previously assumed. Finally, to explain the mechanism involved in the formation of these domains, I examine the modes of back-arc basin formation proposed to explain the formation of the western Pacific basins [Martinez et al., 2007; Dunn and Martinez, 2011], as well as the causes that may have led to mantle exhumation [Pérez-Gussinyé, et al., 2006]. In summary, the proposed conceptual model is based on a slab rollback and depleted mantle setting, in which production of extension-related melting is limited, thus, crustal accretion is attributed to hydrous flux melting. The model presents 5 stages of opening that includes: (I) a normal subduction scenario followed by (II) development of the back-arc rift, (III) initiation of back-arc spreading, (IV) mantle exhumation, and finally (V) emplacement of large volcanic edifices in the central parts of the basin.

[spa] Una de las tareas más importantes de la vulcanología moderna, que representa una implicación socio-económica significativa, es llevar a cabo la evaluación de la peligrosidad en los sistemas volcánicos activos. Estos estudios vulcanológicos están enfocados a la elaboración de mapas de peligro y la simulación de diferentes escenarios eruptivos, y están dirigidas para contribuir a la planificación territorial, a la definición de los planes de emergencia o la gestión de crisis volcánicas. La presente Tesis doctoral está enfocada al desarrollo y aplicación de diferentes herramientas informáticas para los análisis espacial y temporal del peligro volcánico en campos volcánicos monogenéticos. En primer lugar, hemos desarrollado una nueva herramienta, QVAST, diseñada para llevar a cabo el análisis espacial, que permite calcular la susceptibilidad volcánica de la zona de estudio, utilizando datos estructurales directos e indirectos. En segundo lugar, hemos desarrollado una nueva herramienta, HASSET, para llevar a cabo el análisis temporal. La combinación de ambos instrumentos y una herramienta anterior, VORIS 2.0.1, que utiliza modelos de simulación para predecir los escenarios eruptivos más probables y aquellas áreas que podrían verse afectadas por un futuro evento eruptivo, nos permite evaluar de forma probabilística el peligro a largo plazo, representado por un mapa cualitativo que nos permite identificar los diferentes niveles de peligro en el área de estudio. En esta tesis se presentan diferentes casos de estudio en campos volcánicos monogenéticos: la isla de El Hierro (Islas Canarias), la isla Decepción (archipiélago de las Shetland del Sur, Antártida), el campo volcánico de La Garrotxa (NE de España). Por último, teniendo en cuenta la importancia de la cantidad y la calidad de los datos volcánologicos disponibles y un mecanismo de almacenamiento óptimo, se describe el diseño de una nueva estructura de base de datos espaciales, VERDI, que permite manipular, organizar y gestionar diferentes tipos de datos. Las metodologías descritas en esta tesis establecen líneas guía generales de un procedimiento que facilita la realización de la evaluación del peligro volcánico de forma sistemática, los cuales se pueden aplicar a cualquier zona volcánica o sistema, y en particular, a cualquier campo volcánico monogenético., [eng] One of the most important tasks of modern volcanology, which represents a significant socio-economic implication, is to conduct hazard assessment in active volcanic systems. These volcanological studies are aimed at hazard that allows to constructing hazard maps and simulating different eruptive scenarios, and are mainly addressed to contribute to territorial planning, definition of emergency plans or managing volcanic crisis. The impact of a natural event, as a volcanic eruption, can significantly affect human life, property, infrastructures, and the environment. Long periods of quiescence are quite common in many volcanic areas and this often leads to a fall in the alert. The consequence is lack of preparation to deal with a volcanic crisis. The present Ph.D. Thesis is focused on the development and application of different tools for the spatial and temporal analyses to assess volcanic hazard in monogenetic volcanic fields. Monogenetic volcanic fields are commonly not regarded as potentially dangerous and only a few studies concerning hazard assessment have been conducted in such environments. In the long-term hazard assessment, we assume that the future eruptive behaviour in the volcanic field could be similar to the last eruptive activity. First, we have developed a new tool, QVAST (QGIS for VolcAnic SuscepTibility), designed to carry out the spatial analysis. This tool allows to calculate the volcanic susceptibility of the area, i.e. the probability of new vent opening, using direct and indirect structural data. Second, we have developed a new tool, HASSET (Hazard Assessment Event Tree), to conduct temporal analysis. Combining both tools and the previous one, VORIS 2.0.1, that uses simulation models to predict the most probable eruptive scenarios and which areas could be affected by a future eruptive event, we can evaluate in a probabilistic way long-term hazard represented by a qualitative hazard map that allows us to identify different levels of hazard in the study area. In this thesis we present different case studies. The first example was carried out at El Hierro Island (Canary Islands), an island essentially characterized by basaltic volcanism with both Strombolian and Hawaiian activity. The last eruption on El Hierro occurred in 2011–2012 demonstrates the importance of reliable data and tools that can enable scientific advisors and decision-makers to consider possible future eruptive scenarios. The second case study was Deception Island (Southern Shetland Archipelago, Antarctica), which is the most active volcano in the South Shetland Islands and has been the scene of more than twenty eruptions over the past two centuries. We identified a number of significant scenarios using our GIS-based tools and evaluated the potential extent of the main volcanic hazards to be expected on the island. The last case study presented is La Garrotxa Volcanic Field (NE of Spain), which is a quaternary volcanic field, located in the Northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, and includes more than 50 well preserved volcanoes. Finally, considering the importance of both quantity and quality of the available volcanic data and an optimum storage mechanism and as complement to the e-tools we have developed, we describe the design of a new spatial database structure, VERDI (Volcanic managEment Risk Database desIgn), which allows different types of data to be manipulated, organized, managed. The design of purpose-built databases should facilitate spatial and temporal analysis that will produce probabilistic hazard models for future vent opening, simulate volcanic hazards and assess their socio-economic impact, avoiding any duplication of information. The methodologies described in this thesis establish the general guidelines of a procedure that facilitates undertaking volcanic hazard assessment in a systematic way, which can be easily applied to any volcanic area or system, and in particular to any monogenetic volcanic field.

[cat] Aquesta tesi doctoral descriu la cinemàtica dels Pirineus Basco-Cantàbrics, més concretament de la Plataforma Burgalesa, mitjançant la integració de i) geologia de superfície; ii) interpretació de línies sísmiques i pous; i iii) estudis paleomagnètics de rotacions d'eix vertical. La integració d'aquest conjunt de dades permet comprendre la relació entre la Plataforma Burgalesa i les conques d'avantpaís de l'Ebre i del Duero durant la orogènia Pirenaica. Les principals contribucions de la tesi són: i) Presentar un model estructural, el qual honora tots les restriccions imposades per l'estratigrafia, la preconfiguració de l'àrea prèvia a la deformació contractiva i les dades tant superficials com profundes. Aquest model permet comprendre com és la transició entre la deformació pel·licular present a l'est de la zona d'estudi i la deformació no pel·licular present a l'oest. ii) Reinterpretació de l'estructura de Zamanzas localitzada al nord de la Plataforma Burgalesa mitjançant el treball combinat entre geologia de superfície i les dades aportades per els pous d'exploració. iii) Aportar noves dades de vint-i-sis estacions de paleomagnetisme repartides per a la zona d'estudi i que permeten caracteritzar el patró de rotacions d'eix vertical. El resultat final és el de proposar un nou model per a l'evolució de la Plataforma Burgalesa que honra les restriccions imposades tant per la geologia de superfície com les dades d'exploració profunda disponibles fins a la data. Aquest model està caracteritzat per presentar deformació no pel·licular al sector oest mentre que quan el nivell de desenganxament augmenta de potència els encavalcaments es desenganxen i deformen la cobertora presentant un estil estructural pel·licular. Aquesta tesi ha demostrat que la pre-configuració tant de la conca extensiva pròpiament dita com la del seu voltant, tenen una forta implicació en el desenvolupament i estructuració de la Plataforma Burgalesa durant la Orogènia Pirenaica. És durant aquesta etapa en la qual es produeixen rotacions tant horàries com antihoràries en els diferents sectors mostrejats., [eng] This PhD Thesis describes the kinematics of the Burgalesa Platform in the Basque-Cantabrian Pyrenees by the integration of i) surface geology; ii) seismic and well data; and iii) vertical axis rotation paleomagnetic studies. The integration of all the data allow to understand the relationship between the Burgalesa Platform and the Ebro and Duero foreland basins during the Pyrenean Orogeny. The principal contribution of the Thesis is to present a new structural model, that fits all the constraints imposed by the stratigraphy, the pre-configuration of the area prior to the contractive deformation and both the deep and the surface data. This model allows to understand the transition between thin-skinned and the thick-skinned tectonics. The combined work between surface geology and well data has allowed to reinterpret the Zamanzas structure located at the northern boundary of the Burgalesa Platform. Previously, this structure had been interpreted as a set of extensional faults. This Thesis pointed out the mismatches and reinterpret the Zamanzas structure as a popup generated during the Pyrenean Orogeny. The combined interpretation of wells and seismic sections allow to partially comprehend the structure of the area during the extensional event as well as the result of the Pyrenean Orogeny occurred later. This study allowed to determine the distribution of the Lower Cretaceous depocenters during the North Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay opening. Moreover, during this stage salt mobilisation triggered by extension generated areas where the Triassic salt layer was thickened as demonstrated by the well data and the outcropping diapirs. This process accentuated the development of the depocenters. The extensional event also generated the onlap sedimentary geometries in the syn-rift sediments. The extensional model proposed is a combined model with the development of cover forced folding with salt migration at the southern boundary. The Triassic salt decoupled the extension between the basement and the cover and contractional structures were developed such as the back-thrust in the Huidobro area that produced the duplication of the Mesozoic. The early stages of the Pyrenean Orogeny resulted in the development of the San Pedro Structure, with north-directed and basement-involved thrusts, later fossilised by the Duero foreland sediments. To the north, the Burgalesa Platform, characterised by south-directed thrusts rooted into the Triassic salts, was southwards displaced until the San Pedro act as a backstop forcing the Burgalesa Platform to extrude laterally towards the southeast overriding the Ebro Foreland Basin. The paleomagnetic study focussed on determine the possible vertical axis rotations along the Pyrenees, denotes that the amount of sites that some areas have is not present in the Burgalesa Platform and vicinities that lack of sites. For that reason, another objective of this Thesis is to provide new paleomagnetic sites for the study area. The study carried out is made up of twenty-six new sites widely distributed and that allow to characterise the vertical axis rotation pattern. The results obtained reveals that i) the magnetisation of the Cenozoic sediments is prior to deformation and that ii) clockwise and counter clockwise rotation occurred in the Burgalesa Platform and adjacent areas. The evolution models previously proposed for the Burgalesa Platform were based either from surface geology of from geophysical data thus fitting some of the constraints. Because any model integrated all the observations and available data, a new model explaining the Burgalesa Platform evolution has been proposed. This model is characterised by presenting thick-skinned deformation at the western sector whereas, thin-skinned at the eastern one when the Triassic salt layer thickens point in which the thrusts are detach the cover from the basement. The results of this Thesis demonstrate that the pre-configuration of the extensional basin and its vicinities have a strong implication in the development and evolution of the Burgalesa Platform during the Pyrenean Orogeny. Finally, during this evolution, clockwise and counter clockwise rotations occurred in the different sectors as shown by the paleomagnetic studies carried out during this Thesis.

[spa] Los experimentos de multi-sísmicas realizados en el marco de la iniciativa del proyecto ALCUDIA incluyen una incidencia normal y sísmica gran angular de los conjuntos de datos de reflexión sísmica. Estos limitan las estructuras internas, la estructura detallada de la corteza y litosfera y, proporcionan el conocimiento necesario de las propiedades físicas a lo largo de la Zona Central Ibérica. Las imágenes sísmicas de incidencia normal se presentan de Sur a Norte: las estructuras de la Zona Ossa-Morena (Unidad Central), el ondulante domino Ibérico Central, los cuerpos intrusivos graníticos (Granitos de Mora, complejo Anatético de Toledo, etc.) hasta la falla de Toledo, justo al Sur de la cuenca del Tajo. La zona de estudio está caracterizada por una topografía ondulada debido a una serie de sinclinales y anticlinales. La imagen muestra una corteza inferior débilmente reflectante, ~13-18 km de espesor. La topografía sinodal refleja los pliegues, los sistemas de cabalgamientos imbricados, y fallas extensionales lístricas observados por los datos de sísmica de incidencia normal. A niveles más profundos las imágenes revelan estructuras arqueadas y laminares que sugieren estructuras como boundinage. Estas características son interrumpidas hacia el Sur, muy probablemente debido a la existencia de la zona de sutura. La expresión más profunda del afloramiento de la zona de sutura, está ligeramente desplazada hacia el Norte con respecto a su localización en superficie y, esta es vista como un cabalgamiento profundo de una fina capa de corteza inferior. Hacia el límite norte del perfil, debajo la falla de Toledo, una banda de reflectividad buzando hacia norte sugiere un adelgazamiento de la corteza inferior hacia el Norte. La discontinuidad de Mohorovicic se delimita como una fuerte disminución de la reflectividad a la base de la corteza inferior, localizada a unos ~31-33 km de profundidad (10.5 s tempo doble). Los datos de gran ángulo de sísmica de reflexión adquiridos a principios de mayo de 2012, tenían como objetivo proporcionar las distribuciones de las propiedades físicas (velocidades P y S, densidades, y el coeficiente de Poisson) de la corteza bajo la zona de estudio. Este perfil fue diseñado para ser casi coincidente con el perfil de incidencia normal. Los modelos de velocidad de P y S obtenidos revelan importantes variaciones laterales de velocidad en la corteza superior, que son coherentes con la observación de los afloramientos en superficie. La corteza inferior se identifica por un fuerte aumento de la velocidad a ~13 km y ~20 km de profundidad en Zona Central Ibérica y en la Cuenca del Tajo, respectivamente. La base de la corteza está fuertemente limitada por grandes amplitud de las llegadas de PmP y SmS y se encuentra a ~31 km en el extremo sur y a ~35,5 km por debajo del extremo norte del perfil de sísmica de gran ángulo. La sísmica de gran ángulo también se utilizó para producir low-fold stacks para las ondas P y las S. Esto se hizo para tomar una mirada más cercana a la discontinuidad de Moho, y para ser capaces de estimar la estructura interna y generar sismogramas sintéticos donde las fases PmP y SmS serían cualitativamente comparables a las fases observadas en los registros sísmicos. Esto dio lugar restricciones clave en la estructura de la discontinuidad de Moho bajo la Zona Central Ibérica y la Cuenca del Tajo en el orógeno Varisco del Macizo Central Ibérico. Las imágenes revelan una profundización gradual de ~31 km (10,2 s) en la Zona Central Ibérica a ~35,5 km (11,8 s) debajo de la cuenca del Tajo para la discontinuidad de Moho. Los datos sísmicos de gran ángulo y los resultados derivados de ellos son compatibles con las imágenes de incidencia normal., [eng] The multi-seismic experiments carried out under the ALCUDIA research initiative include a normal incidence and a wide-angle seismic reflection datasets. These constrain the internal architecture, the detailed crustal and lithospheric structure and, provide the necessary knowledge on physical properties across the Central Iberia Zone. The normal incidence seismic images from south to north: the suture zone of Ossa-Morena Zone (the Central Unit), the undulating Central Iberian domain, the intruded granitic bodies (the Mora Granite, the Toledo Anatectic complex, etc) up to the Toledo Fault, just south of the Tajo Basin. The study area is characterized by undulating topography characterized by a series of synclines and anticlines. The image shows a weakly reflective upper crust, ~13-18 km thick. The sinusoidal topography reflects the folding, the imbricate thrust systems, and listric extensional faults imaged by the normal incidence data. At deeper levels the image reveals arcuate and laminated events suggesting boudinage like structures. These features are disrupted in the south most probably due to the existence of the suture zone. The deep expression of the outcropping suture zone, is slightly displaced to the north with respect to its surface position and, it is imaged as an under-thrusting of a thin slice of lower crust. Towards the northern end of the transect, beneath the Toledo fault, a north dipping band of reflectivity suggest a significant thinning of the lower crust to the north. The Mohorovicic discontinuity is delineated as a sharp decrease in reflectivity at the base of the lower crust, located at ~31-33 km depth (10.5 s two-way travel-time). The wide-angle seismic reflection data acquired in early May 2012, was aimed to provide the distributions of the physical properties (P- and and S-wave velocities, densities, and Poisson’s ratio) of the crust beneath the study area. It was designed to be nearly coincident with the normal incidence profile. The obtained P- and S- wave velocity models reveal significant lateral velocity variations in the upper crust, which are consistent with the observation from the surface outcrops. The lower crust is identified by a sharp increase in velocity at ~13 km and ~20 km beneath the Central Iberian Zone and the Tajo Basin, respectively. The base of the crust is strongly constrained by the high amplitude PmP and SmS arrivals and it is located at ~31 km in the southern end and at ~35.5 km below the northern end of the wide-angle transect. The wide-angle was also used to produce low-fold P- and S-wave wide-angle stacks. This was done to take a closer look to the Moho discontinuity, and to be able to estimate the internal structure and generate synthetic seismograms in which the PmP and SmS would be qualitatively comparable to the phases observed in the shot records. This place key constraints on the structure of the Moho discontinuity beneath the Central Iberian Zone and the Tajo Basin in the Variscan orogen of the central Iberian Massif. The images reveal gradual deepening from ~31 km (10.2 s) in the Central Iberian Zone to ~35.5 km (11.8 s) beneath the Tajo Basin for the Moho discontinuity. The wide-angle seismic data and the results derived from it are compatible with the normal incidence images.

[spa]Tenerife es una isla volcánica cuya superficie muestra evidencias de grandes deslizamientos y una depresión central (caldera de Las Cañadas) cuyo origen ha sido bastante controvertido. Las dos hipótesis principales se basan en una serie de colapsos de caldera del complejo central y un colapso lateral del mismo edificio. Aprovechando la existencia de un gran número de perforaciones (pozos y galerías horizontales) ejecutadas para la explotación de agua dulce en la isla de Tenerife, y haciendo uso de su registro geológico, se quiere mostrar cuál de las hipótesis encaja mejor con la información del subsuelo. En primer lugar se ha utilizado el registro geológico de las perforaciones para elaborar una base de datos de la geología del subsuelo de Tenerife. Posteriormente se ha representado esta información de forma gráfica en mapas y vistas 3D. Y en tercer lugar se han elaborado los modelos geológicos. La modelización geológica se ha desarrollado principalmente para explotaciones mineras y petrolíferas, siendo su aplicación a terrenos volcánicos novedosa. Dada la particularidad que presenta Tenerife, con un registro geológico del subsuelo kilométrico, se ha aplicado el software GeoModeller2013 para cometer la modelización geológica de la isla, combinando además la geología de superficie, topografía, batimetría y datos magnetotelúricos. Los modelos teóricos construidos, basados en los datos reales observables, recogen las ideas de las dos hipótesis de generación de la caldera de Las Cañadas (caldera de colapso vertical o por deslizamiento lateral)., [eng]Tenerife offers one of the most complex but well exposed examples of active volcanic island, in which large scale destructive events have occurred during its subaerial construction, such as giant landslides. An international controversy exists about the origin of Las Cañadas depression and the valleys of Icod, La Orotava and Güímar. The main hypothesis of the Las Cañadas origin are a succession of caldera collapses and a landslide which headwall would be the southern part of Las Cañadas depression. The island has an extensive network of sub-horizontal galleries and vertical drills that are made to capture fresh water from the main aquifers. We have used the geological records from those boreholes to build a database of the subsurface’s geology. The 3D modelling tools, that were used mainly for petrological surveys are now applied to volcanology, combining geological maps, topography, bathimetry, geophysical studies and geological records from galleries and boreholes. The 3D geological models are based in the real data and the two main hypothesis about the origin of Las Cañadas. This way we want to know what of this two ideas are more viable with the actual data, or if all this information of the subsurface can conclude what is more realistic.

[cat] La present Tesi Doctoral es centra en els controls geològics i estructurals del vulcanisme monogenètic. S'ha posat especial atenció a la part més superficial de la litosfera i en el paper que juga aquesta zona en determinar la distribució de punts emissors i estils eruptius. S'ha seleccionat com a cas estudi el Camp Volcànic de la Garrotxa (GVF) (NE d'lberia). Aquest és encara poc conegut i ha esdevingut un lloc ideal per l'aplicació d'estudis multidlsciplinaris com els treballs que constitueixen aquesta Tesi Doctoral, integrant mètodes geofísics. treballs de camp, ¡ anàlisis geomorfològics i estructurals. Els primers dos treballs s'han portat a terme al sector Nord del GVF. Aquests estudis s'han basat en l'aplicació de diverses tècniques geofísiques, identificant així les estructures tectòniques principals I obtenint una informació detallada del basament. El tercer treball també s'ha realitzat a partir d'un estudi multigeofísic. En aquest cas al sector Sud del GVF, concretament al volcà de la Crosa de Sant Dalmai. Els resultats han permès la realització d'un model de la part superior de la diatrema, determinant la seva estructura interna i origen. Els resultats obtingut suggereixen que la tomografia elèctrica resulta una eina eficaç per l'estudi dels diferents tipus d'edificis monogenètics. D'aquesta manera es presenta un treball breu amb diferents exemples de l'estructura dels cons volcànics de la zona. Combinant aquests resultats amb informació geològica de camp, s'ha realitzat la primera cartografia vulcanoestratigràfica del GVF. Finalment, s'ha fet un anàlisi volcanoestructural de tot el camp volcànic, el qual Inclou la distribució geoestadística de falles, fissures i punts emissors, identificació morfo-estructural de lineacions, anàlisi morfomètric dels cons i cràters, localització de la sismicitat registrada de la zona i gasos derivats del mantell en surgències i pous, com a guia per identificar falles actives o fractures obertes, amb l'objectiu de definir els controls estructurals d'aquest vulcanisme. Tot els resultats obtinguts han permès entendre el transport del magma des de la litosfera fins la superfície, i representen un eina essencial per una correcta avaluació de la perillositat volcànica al GVF. Tanmateix, les metodologies descrites estableixen una pauta general per l'estudi dels camps monogenètics actius., [eng] Monogenetic volcanism represents the most common volcano type on Earth. The distribution of it depends in each case on their regional and local tectonic controls. The great variety of eruptive styles, edifice morphologies, and deposits shown by monogenetic volcanoes is the result of a complex combination of internal (magma composition, gas content, magma rheology, magma volume, etc.) and external (regional and local stress fields. stratigraphic and rheological contrasts of substrate rock, hydrogeology, etc.) parameters during magma transport from the source region to the surface. The present PhD Thesis focuses on the geological and structural controls of monogenetic volcanism. It pays particular attention to the uppermost part of the lithosphere and its role to determine the distribution of eruptive vents and eruptive styles. We have selected La Garrotxa Volcanic Field (GVFj as a case study. This Quaternary volcanic field is located in the Northeast of the Iberian Peninsula and includes more than SO well-preserved volcanoes. It covers an area of 600 km2, between the cities of Olot and Girona and belongs to the Catalan Volcanic Zone, one of the alkaline volcanic provinces of the European Rift System. The GVF is still poorly known and has become an ideal place for the application of the multidisciplinary studies, including geophysical methods, geological fieldwork and geomorphological and structural analyses, which constitute this PhD Thesis. The first work was carried out at the Northern sector of the GVF. This study was mainly based on the application of gravimetry and self-potential techniques, in order to identify the main tectonic structures of the volcanic area at depth. A second work was performed in order to obtain a much better detail of the shallower structures and to relate the subsurface geology to the feeding system of these monogenetic volcanoes. In this case, we applied the electrical resistivity tomography method, comparing the new data with the self-potential results. A third work was carried out at the Southern sector of the GVF, at La Crosa de Sant Dalmai volcano (10 km SW of Girona), one of the biggest maar-diatreme edifices of the Iberian Peninsula. Here, several geophysical techniques were applied, including gravimetry, magnetometry, self-potential and electrical resistivity tomography. A model of the uppermost part of the diatreme was obtained, determining the internal structure and its origin. The results obtained with the application of these geophysical methods in this volcanic field suggest that electrical resistivity tomography is a useful tool for the study the internal structures of different types of monogenetic landforms. In this way we present a short work that illustrates different examples of internal structures of monogenetic volcanic cones from GVF. Furthermore, combining the results from these geophysical studies with the geological informations obtained by fieldwork, we performed the first volcanic stratigraphy map of the GVF. Finally, we also led a detailed volcano-structural analysis of the whole volcanic field, including geostatistical distribution of faults, fissures and vents, morpho structural lineaments identified by remote sensing, a morphometrical analysis of the volcanic cones and craters, location of regional seismic events recorded in the area (since 1978), and mantle derived gases in springs and water wells, as a guide to identify active faults and open fractures and to define the structural controls of this volcanism. The results obtained from all these studies have permitted understanding how magma was transported into the lithosphere and erupted at the surface, and represent an essential tool for a correct volcanic hazard assessment of the GVF. Furthermore, the methodologies described in this PhD Thesis establish general guidelines to study active monogenetic volcanic fields and we hope that it will contribute to improve their understanding.

The electromagnetic methods are especially interesting for the characterisation and monitoring of geological storage of CO2 sites. The electrical resistivity is a physical parameter that depends on the mineralogical composition of the rocks, as well as on other characteristics such as porosity, pore connectivity, pore fluid salinity, saturation, temperature and pressure. The CO2 injected in the reservoir produce changes in the resistivity that enables its detection with electromagnetic methods. However, it is necessary to have a thorough knowledge of the structure at the pre-injection state to detect and quantify the changes produced by the injected CO2. The magnetotelluric method is the only electromagnetic method with a penetration depth ranging from ten of metres to hundreds of kilometres depth. Furthermore, this method allows determining the directionality and evolution of the structures in depth thanks to its tensorial character. Hence, the objective of this thesis is to characterise using the magnetotelluric method, the Technological Development Plant (TDP) of Hontomín for Geological Storage of CO2 in a deep saline formation and evaluate the capabilities of the magnetotelluric method to monitor the injected gas. The work presented in this thesis represents an important contribution to the characterisation projects of CO2 storage sites in deep saline formations. The 3D resistivity model obtained defines the reference geoelectrical model for the subsequent electromagnetic monitoring studies. Moreover, the model shows the dome structure of Hontomín and the main fault system. The model allows identifying the potential leakage zones and defines the monitoring needs for the Hontomín TDP. This model also correlates satisfactorily with hydrogeochemical, seismic, gravimetric and well-log data. Additionally, the monitoring capabilities of the magnetotelluric method have been assessed in this work, proposing a new methodology to improve the resolution of the surface magnetotelluric responses to resistivity changes occurred at the reservoir level., La captura y almacenamiento geológico de dióxido de carbono (CO2) constituye una de las soluciones tecnológicas propuestas en la actualidad para reducir las emisiones de este gas a la atmosfera. El objetivo de esta tecnología es capturar y transportar el gas desde los grandes focos emisores hasta los lugares seleccionados como almacenes geológicos, donde es inyectado. Esta tesis se centra en la Planta de Desarrollo Tecnológico (PDT) de Hontomín (España), donde el almacenamiento geológico se llevará a cabo en un acuífero salino profundo. La PDT se enmarca en el proyecto Compostilla OXYCFB300, dentro del Programa Energético Europeo para la Recuperación (European Energy Programme for Recovery). La mayoría de las propiedades físicas de la roca almacén, en especial la resistividad eléctrica, variarán tras la inyección de CO2. El fluido salino conductor contenido en el poro será sustituido por el gas, de carácter más resistivo, reduciendo el volumen de agua disponible para la conducción iónica. Por ello, los métodos electromagnéticos, sensibles a la resistividad eléctrica, son especialmente interesantes para este tipo de proyectos ya que permiten estudiar la evolución del gas inyectado y estimar la saturación de CO2 en el poro. Esta tesis tiene por objetivo la caracterización, control y seguimiento de la PDT de Hontomín mediante el método magnetotelúrico. El objetivo principal es la obtención de un modelo geoeléctrico tridimensional (3D) de referencia, que permita caracterizar la zona en la situación de preinyección y sirva de modelo base para los posteriores estudios de seguimiento con métodos electromagnéticos de fuente controlada. Asimismo, esta tesis persigue evaluar la capacidad de control y seguimiento del método magnetotelúrico. Con este propósito, se ha desarrollado una nueva metodología para mejorar la resolución de las respuestas magnetotelúricas superficiales a cambios de resistividad producidos en el reservorio (metodología denominada layer stripping). La caracterización de la PDT de Hontomín se ha llevado a cabo en dos etapas. En la primera etapa se adquirió un perfil magnetotelúrico de orientación NS. Este primer estudio demostró la idoneidad del método para caracterizar la zona de estudio y proporcionó un modelo geoeléctrico bidimensional (2D) de la misma. En la segunda etapa se completó la adquisición de los datos, lo que permitió la obtención del modelo geoeléctrico 3D de la PDT. Esta tesis presenta ambos estudios de caracterización. Cada uno de ellos es justificado por un análisis previo de dimensionalidad de los datos y detalla la metodología de inversión empleada para alcanzar resultados válidos y apropiados. El modelo 2D obtenido previamente ha sido validado por el modelo 3D, el cual se correlaciona satisfactoriamente con datos hidrogeoquímicos, sísmicos, gravimétricos y datos de pozos, entre otros. Este modelo 3D constituye el modelo geoeléctrico de referencia de la PDT, siendo la principal contribución de esta tesis. El modelo muestra la estructura de domo de Hontomín y los principales conjuntos de fallas. Permite así identificar las posibles zonas de fuga y definir las necesidades de control y seguimiento de la PDT. De este modo, esta tesis supone una importante contribución a los proyectos de caracterización de almacenes de CO2 en acuíferos salinos profundos. El método magnetotelúrico ha demostrado ser una técnica electromagnética apropiada para caracterizar el área de estudio. Los resultados obtenidos son significativos y ponen de manifiesto la importancia de establecer un modelo geoeléctrico de la situación de preinyección a fin de caracterizar la estructura, concretar las necesidades de control de la planta y definir el modelo de referencia para los posteriores estudios de seguimiento. Los estudios electromagnéticos son complementarios a estudios de caracterización sísmicos y dada su sensibilidad a la conductividad eléctrica, se establecen como métodos de resolución superior para determinados aspectos de interés en el almacenamiento de CO2 y su seguimiento a largo plazo.

[spa] Esta tesis se encuentra dentro de un proyecto que pretende construir una planta piloto de almacenamiento geológico de CO2, en Hontomín (Plataforma Burgalesa, norte de España). Los objetivos principales son construir un modelo 3D de la estructura de Hontomín y entender el patrón de fracturas de la Plataforma Burgalesa para aplicarlo a la zona de Hontomín. El modelo tridimensional se interpreta a partir de datos de sísmica 3D y es presentado en esta tesis, definiendo la estructura y las principales unidades reservorio y sello. El patrón de fracturas se ha analizado a través de análogos de campo. Concretamente, se ha estudiado la fracturación en las rocas cretácicas superiores de la Plataforma Burgalesa, en la zona de la falla de Ubierna y en el diapiro de Poza de la Sal (cuyos resultados han sido presentados en los tres artículos compilados en la presente tesis). El resultado de estos estudios ha sido integrado y se ha propuesto un modelo de evolución del patrón de fracturación de la zona. Asimismo, se han extrapolado estos datos de fracturación a la estructura de Hontomín dando las directrices del principal patrón de fracturación que se espera., [eng] This thesis is part of a project funded by the Fundación Ciudad de la Energia (CIUDEN), which decided to build a plant science and technology for CO2 capture and storage development in Spain, in the Hontomín anticline (north of Burgos). Within this project have collaborated many research centers in Spain and specifically the "Institut de Recerca de la UB Geomodels" was given the task of characterizing both the threedimensional structure and the fracture pattern that affects the main reservoir and seal structure Hontomín. The purpose of this thesis is precisely to fill this need to characterize the structure together with the Hontomín fracturing, constraining the latter with the acquisition of regional data to characterize the deformation mechanisms responsible for their formation and evolution. From the interpretation of a 3D seismic cube provided by CIUDEN (integrated with information of wells Hontomín-1,-2,-3 and -4), a 3D model of the Hontomín structure has been generated. This model shows a raised platform limited to the south and to the west by two monocline flexures that plunge Mesozoic materials below Cenozoic sedimentary fill of the Bureba basin. To the south, the ENE-WSW monocline culminated by tight E-W folds, which underlines the Quintanilla anticline, connecting with Ubierna Fault near the town of Montorio. Below Quintanilla anticline seismic lines show a strongly dipping fault (parallel to the anticline) dipping towards north, with mainly clockwise displacement (vertical displacement is almost zero or very low and slightly up the northern block). These structures were generated after the sedimentation of the continental Oligocene deposits. Previously of this sedimentation, the area was already affected by a prior Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous structure. It involves developing a bending of carbonate platforms of the terminal Triassic to Middle Jurassic to the north and to the west associated with forced folds, formed mainly during the early stages of the syn-rift sedimentation of the Upper Jurassic - Lower Cretaceous (specifically contemporary the "Purbeck" facies), which show a growth strata geometry above the oldest bended Jurassic successions. Conversely, strike-slip and reverse faults are younger so they cut lower Cretaceous sequences. The culmination of this dome located in the center of the 3D seismic cube Hontomín shifted to the SE, appears below the angular unconformity that, in this area, separates the sub-horizontal Lower Cretaceous to the tilted succession of the terminal Triassic-Upper Jurassic to the north and to the west. This shift in the position of the dome culmination is innate in the folding of angular unconformities as shows the work of Suppe et al., 1992. Data analyzed in the Burgalesa Platform show that the fracture pattern depends primarily on: 1) The tectonic events that have affected the material; 2) the position of the rocks in relation to major faults affecting the area; and 3) the lithology of the rock where they developed. Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous materials are affected by the Upper Jurassic – Lower Cretaceous extension and by the subsequent Pyrenean compression. Thus, they present a complex pattern that includes NW-SE to E-O extensional faults and NNE-SSW and WNW-ESE joints. These fractures, mostly, were generated during the Upper Jurassic – Lower Cretaceous extension and were partly contractively reactivated during the compression event. The density and degree of deformation generated is fairly constant throughout the study area and increases considerably over Ubierna deformed bands and Oña where compressive Cenozoic deformation was more intense. Also, it appears to be higher around salt diapirs. The upper Cretaceous successions, only affected by compressive Pyrenean deformation are less fractured. In general, these sequences one can distinguish two patterns fracturing; one located along directional deformation bands that bounds the Burgalesa platform, and the other developed at the inside of the raised platform. The deformed Ubierna band is characterized by right strike-slip faults oriented WNW -ESE and by a penetrative network of NNW -SSE joints. In this zone thrust are oriented NE- SW and the left strike-slip faults are oriented NE-SW. Otherwise, in the deformed Oña band, is characterized by NS to NNW-SSE cleavages, WSW-ENE joints and faults WNW –ESE left strike-slip faults and subordinately, NE-SW right strike-slip faults. Out of these deformed bands, the deformation is less intense and is made especially for joints orientated WNW-ESE, WSW-ENE, NNW-SSE and NNE-SSO. Moreover, this area present also other types of fractures (although less abundant than joints) constituted by extensive faults oriented WNW-ESE, NNW-SSE and WSW-ENE, compressive faults (and cleavages) oriented ENE-WSW, WNW-ESE and NE-SW right strike-slip faults and WNW-ESE left strike-slip faults

[cat]Aquesta tesi presenta l’evolució cinemàtica dels Pirineus centre-meridionals durant el Terciari a partir de la integració de dades magnetostratigràfiques, termocronològiques I magnetotectòniques del seu registre sinorogènic. La datació magnetostratigràfica dels conglomerats sintectònics de La Pobla de Segur, Senterada i Sis, fixa la seva edat en Eocè mig-Oligocè superior (cron 19r a cron 9n). Aquests resultats permeten establir una nova cronostratigrafia pels materials eocens-oligocens dels Pirineus centre-meridionals de la que deriven implicacions biocronològiques, ja que canvia substancialment les edats acceptades del nivells de referència europeus MP14 a MP17. Les edats magnetostratigràfiques s’han combinat amb termocronologia detrítica de blocs de granit dels conglomerats sintectònics. La termocronologia obtinguda varia de 63 a 27 Ma. Els models tèrmics revelen tres períodes de refredament ràpid relacionats amb el moviment de grans encavalcaments a la Zona Axial, destacant l’ocorregut a l’Eocè superior-Oligocè inferior degut al moviment de l’encavalcament de Rialp i a l’increment de relleu a la Zona Axial per underthrusting. L’annealing post-deposicional de les mostres estratigràficament més baixes suggereix que el cinturó de plecs i encavalcaments pirinenc va estar cobert per 2 km de materials. Els models tèrmics també suggereixen una exhumació ràpida al Miocè superior, relacionada amb la captura de l’Ebre al Mediterrani. Durant la sedimentació dels materials sinorogènics estudiats té lloc la formació de thrust salients als Pirineus meridionals entre els que destaca la Zona Obliqua d’Ainsa. L’estudi magnetotectònic dut a terme en aquesta zona revela rotacions verticals que varien de ~80º a Mediano a ~20º al nord d’Añisclo. L’edat de la rotació principal a la làmina de Gavarnie s’estableix en el Lutecià-Bartonià, quan eren actives totes les estructures de la Zona Obliqua d’Ainsa, i estaria causada per una diferència de 50 km en la quantitat de desplaçament de la làmina de Gavarnie controlada per la distribució de les sals triàsiques al seu desenganxament basal. La sincronia entre encavacalments i rotacions apunta a un model d’arc progressiu amb transport divergent. Aquests resultats revelen una estreta relació entre el registre estratigràfic dels materials sinorogènics, els encavalcaments i l’exhumació a la Zona Axial i l’evolució estructural del sistema d’envacalments dels Pirineus meridionals. Les forces tectòniques van controlar els patrons d’exhumació, l’evolució de la topografia sinorogènica de les conques intramuntanyoses i d’avantpaís i les característiques deposicionals dels sediments sinorogènics., [eng]This PhD Thesis presents the Tertiary kinematic evolution of the South-Central Pyrenees from the integration of magnetostratigraphic, magnetotectonic and thermochronological analyses on its synorogenic sedimentary record. One of the main contributions of this PhD thesis is the continuous absolute dating of the syntectonic conglomerates of La Pobla de Segur, Senterada and Sis. Magnetostratigraphy of these materials establishes their deposition during Middle Eocene-Late Oligocene times (from chron 19r up to chron 9n). Integration of these results with previous magnetostratigraphic works within the Ainsa Basin has allowed the establishment of a new chronostratigraphy for the Eocene-Oligocene materials of the South-Central Pyrenees. The obtained chronostratigraphy has biochronological implications as it substantially changes the traditionally accepted ages of the European reference levels MP14 to MP17. MP14 and MP15 reference levels are proposed to correlate to Lutetian whereas MP16 and MP17 would be Bartonian in age. These results reveal that the correlation between the continental and marine Paleogene record needs further refinement and therefore, that the chronostratigraphic age attributions based on MP reference levels should be taken with caution. The magnetostratigraphic ages have been combined with detrital thermochronology on 13 granitic cobbles enclosed in the syntectonic conglomerates. The detrital apatite fission track ages obtained vary from 63 to 27 Ma. When these ages are combined with the stratigraphic ages, samples define 5 groups with thermochronological ages generally increasing down-section except in the most deeply buried ones due to post-depositional partial annealing. Thermal models reveal three periods of rapid-cooling within the Axial Zone due to movement on large-thrust sheets. A dramatic increase in exhumation rate occurred during the latest Eocene-Early Oligocene related to the onset of movement in the Rialp thrust sheet and the increase in structural relief of the Axial Zone by underthrusting. The magnetostratigraphic and thermochronological ages obtained permit the link between the sedimentation rates in the surrounding basins and the exhumation rates in the hinterland, and reveal that accommodation space exerted the main control on sedimentation rates within the piggy-back basins. Post-depositional annealing of the stratigraphically lowest samples suggests about 2 km of burial by the younger synorogenic materials during progressive burial of the South Pyrenean fold and thrust belt. Thermal models also suggest a rapid exhumation event during the Late Neogene, linked to re-excavation caused by the base level drop during the Ebro River capture to the Mediterranean Sea. Sedimentation of the studied synorogenic materials during Middle Eocene-Oligocene times occurred coeval to the development of thrust salients in the southern Pyrenees. The magnetotectonic study of 36 sites carried out in the Ainsa Oblique Zone reveal clockwise vertical-axis rotations varying from ~80° in the lower Lutetian materials of the Mediano anticline to ~20° in middle Ilerdian materials cropping out at the northern edge of the Añisclo anticline. Sites in the central part of the Montsec and Bóixols thrust sheets don’t record any significant rotation as neither do the syntectonic materials of La Pobla, Sis and Senterada. The age of the main rotation event within the Gavarnie thrust sheet is constrained to Lutetitan to Bartonian times, when all the structures of the Ainsa Oblique Zone were active. This vertical-axis rotation stage obeys to a difference of ~50 km in the amount of displacement on the Gavarnie thrust sheet controlled by the NE-SW pinch out of the Triassic salts at its basal detachment. A second rotation event of ~ 10° took place since Priabonian times, as a result of the differential displacement of about 22 km of the Serres Marginals thrust sheet, respect the Gavarnie one, on top of the upper Eocene-Oligocene evaporites. The synchronicity between thrusting and vertical-axis rotations suggests that the curved fold and thrust belt formed by progressive curvature with divergent thrust transport. The results exposed in this Thesis reveal a strong relationship between the stratigraphic record of the synorogenic materials, thrusting and exhumation in the Axial Zone and the structural evolution of the South Pyrenean thrust system. Tectonic forces controlled the observed patterns of exhumation, the evolution of the synorogenic topography of the piggy-back and foreland basins and the depositional features of the synorogenic sediments.

[cat] Aquesta tesi es composa de tres articles relacionats amb el mètode Magnetotelluric (MT) i la seva aplicació a la caracterització d’estructures geoelèctriques de la litosfera. La tesi comença amb una introducció on es presenten les motivacions d’aquesta i els objectius plantejats, així com el context geològic dels Pirineus, els estudis previs que s’han realitzat i les dades fetes servir pel desenvolupament de la tesis. La introducció conté també una descripció del mètode MT amb l’objectiu d’ajudar a entendre l’anàlisi que es desenvolupa en els articles. Tot seguit s’exposen els tres articles, es discuteixen els resultats obtinguts i s’exposen les conclusions a les que s’ha arribat. El primer article mostra les estructures geoelèctriques sota el Pirineu Central. L’objectiu d’aquest estudi ha estat millorar els resultats de Ledo (1996) i Pous et al. (1995a), aplicant els progressos que hi ha hagut en el camp de la MT en els darrers quinze anys. Els nous resultats han permès caracteritzar millor la zona de fusió parcial associada amb la subducció de l’escorça Ibèrica Inferior (IBSLC) i el límit litosfera astenosfera (LAB). De forma complementaria, s’ha dut a terme un anàlisi de les propietats de l’escorça inferior que ha permès aportar més arguments a favor de la hipòtesis de la fusió parcial. En el segon article el mètode MT s’ha fet servir per caracteritzar les estructures geoelèctriques sota el Pirineu Occidental-Central en un nou perfil de MT. En aquest estudi també s’han observat estructures geoelèctriques associades amb la fusió parcial de la IBSLC i amb el LAB. Sota la conca de l’Ebre s’ha observat per primer cop una anomalia geoelèctrica que s’ha associat amb la presència d’un límit Hercinià. Els resultats han estat comparats amb els del Pirineu Central per tal de caracteritzar l’evolució de les principals estructures geoelèctriques al llarg de la serralada. En el tercer article s’ha proposat un nou mètode per processar dades MT. Aquest mètode utilitza els camps magnètics horitzontals enregistrats en una estació veïna per processar les dades de la zona d’estudi únicament a partir de relacions tensorials entre estacions. Els experiments duts a terme corroboren la validesa del mètode., [eng] This thesis is a compendium of three papers related to the magnetotelluric (MT) method and its application to the characterization of lithospheric-scale geoelectrical structures. The thesis begins with an Introduction where the motivation and the aims are presented as well as the geological context of the Pyrenees, the previous geophysical studies and the used data set. The Introduction also contains a description of the MT method with basic concepts useful to understand the MT analysis developed in the three papers. Then the three papers, which are the main part of the thesis, are exposed. After the papers, there is a Discussion where the results are commented and compared, extending some of the ideas proposed in the articles and including a new geoelectrical crustal model of the Western Pyrenees. Then there are the Conclusions and proposals of future works related to the MT sites acquired in the Pyrenees and the proposed method for processing MT data. At the end of the thesis there are the references of the cited works and an annex containing a copy of the two published papers and a copy of the submitted manuscript of the third paper. The first published paper determines the geoelectrical structures below the Central Pyrenees using new BBMT and LMT data acquired close to the ECORS-Pyrenees deep seismic profile. The aim of this study has been to improve the results obtained by Ledo (1996) and Pous et al. (1995a), taking advantage of the progress occurred in the last fifteen years associated with the MT method and the acquisition of MT data. The most important improvements that have been achieved are the better definition of the top of the electrical resistivity structure associated with the Iberian subducted lower crust (IBSLC) and the determination of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) below the Iberian and the European plates close to the collision zone. Complementary, an analysis of the geological properties of the lower-crust and the dehydration point of the muscovite and biotite rocks provides more arguments in favour of the hypothesis of partial melting to explain the geophysical observations associated with the IBSLC. In the second paper the MT method has been applied to characterize the geoelectrical structures below the West-Central Pyrenees in a new MT profile across the Pyrenean mountain range. This new MT profile is 130 km long and is composed by twenty BBMT sites acquired in 2010, seven of them also with LMT data. Results have been compared with the ones obtained in the Central Pyrenees characterizing the main geoelectrical variations between the two MT profiles. An analysis of the thermal re-equilibration of the IBSLC has been developed completing the analysis of the previous paper about the presence or absence of partial melting in the IBSLC. This analysis corroborates partial melting as the best explanation for the low electrical resistivity values of the IBSLC. The LAB below the West-Central Pyrenees has been determined not only below the Iberian and the European plates, as in the Central Pyrenees, but also below the collision zone. Additionally, an unexpected geoelectrical structure completely buried below the Ebro basin has been associated with a Variscan boundary. In the third paper a new method is proposed for processing MT data. The proposed method uses the horizontal magnetic fields recorded at a neighbouring site to process the MT data of a local site from inter-station tensor relationships. Results obtained in the experiments validate the method. A parameter has been defined in order to determine, in each specific study for each used period, if the proposed method can be applied.

The Cotiella Massif in the southern Pyrenees constitutes a seismic-scale exposure of an extensional basin developed during the Late Cretaceous by the gravity-driven collapse of the post-rift platform above Upper Triassic salt. The internal structure is dominated by four main middle Coniacian-early Santonian sub-basins with large rollover anticlines. They involve the carbonates of the post-rift succession which unconformably overlies the Lower Cretaceous syn-rift basins. The extensional faults are only partially inverted despite is transported tens of kilometres southwards in the Pyrenean nappes. Data presented in this Thesis reveal that the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the basin has not only been controlled by the growth of extensional faults above salt, but also by the rising and falling of diapirs, as well as by salt migration and the development of transfer faults. At late Santonian, the extensional faults were partially inverted, salt was expulsed and salt welds were produced, leaving little trace of the original salt volume. Even though, the extensional features are outstandingly preserved. The excellent exposures offer a unique opportunity to investigate in outcrop the structure and infilling of a post-rift salt basin and gain insight into the understanding of other salt-involved passive margins. Thus, the main purposes of the Thesis are twofold: 1) describe the structure and the facies distribution of the inverted Cotiella basin with more detail than existing works and 2) decipher the role of salt tectonics in its development. To reach these objectives, the structure has been investigated through geological mapping and structural field data acquisition, integrated with a three-dimensional (3D) 1:5.000 digital terrain model. A surface-data based 3D reconstruction; cross-sections along strike and across strike, interpretation of oblique photographs. The middle Coniacian – early Santonian succession has been sub-divided into litostratigraphic units which make the investigation of the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the Cotiella basin possible. The data presented is compared with similar structures of the world and the given interpretations are validated with sequential restorations of the salt structures. Ultimately, a structural evolutionary model of the Cotiella basin is proposed.
