- Abstract
The performance of a biotrickling filter for the abatement of composting emissions was evaluated at short gas contact times of 2–10 s with a structured and an unstructured packing material. The effect of the gas contact time, pH control and water make-up flowrate were also evaluated during 8 months. The average elimination capacity was 13 g N m-3 h-1 and 3.3 g C m-3 h-1 for NH3 and VOCs, respectively. Maximum capacities obtained during an inlet concentration spiking experiment were 45 g N m-3 h-1 and 20 g C m-3 h-1 at a removal efficiency of 92.5 and 46.7%, respectively. A decrease of 40% was detected in the nitrification capacity when the hydraulic residence time increased from 2 to 5 h. Thus, water renewal was identified as a critical parameter to avoid substrate inhibition by nitrite and NH3 accumulation. Results demonstrate that significant NH3 and VOCs removal efficiencies can be achieved for composting emissions in a biotrickling filter operated at short gas contact times, which entails a substantial reduction of operational and investment costs in comparison to traditional techniques., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (author’s final draft)

- Abstract
The elimination capacity of gaseous H2S biofiltration can be limited either by mass transfer or bioreaction in the biofilm. Assessment of the biological activity of immobilized cells (biofilm) usually implies morphological and physiological changes during the adaptation of cells to respirometric devices operated as suspended cultures. In this study, respirometry of heterogeneous media is advised as a valuable technique for characterizing mass transport and biological activity of H2S-oxidizing biofilms attached on two packing materials from operative biotrickling filters. Controlled flows of liquid and H2S-containing air were recirculated through a closed heterogeneous respirometer allowing a more realistic estimation of the biofilm activity by the experimental evaluation of the oxygen uptake rate (OUR). Specific maximum OUR of 23.0 and 38.5 mmol O-2 (g biomass min)(-1) were obtained for Pall rings and polyurethane foam, respectively. A mathematical model for the determination of kinetic-related parameters such as the maximum H2S elimination capacity and morphological properties of biofilm (i.e., thickness and fraction of wetted area of packing bed) was developed and calibrated. With the set of parameters obtained, the external oxygen mass transport to the wetted biofilm was found to limit the global H2S biofiltration capacity, whereas the non-wetted biofilm was the dominant route for the gaseous O-2 and H2S mass transfer to the biofilm. - Abstract
Modeling the complex interactions between biochemical reactions and hydrodynamics is the key to optimize biofiltration systems performance. In this work, biological kinetics expressions were implemented into Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model as transport equations, including convective and diffusive terms. Previously, activity within the biofilm of a flat plate bioreactor (FPB) was experimentally investigated measuring dissolved oxygen (DO) profiles by means of microsensors and under common operating conditions. Moreover, a mathematical model to describe mass transport and metabolic activity in the FPB was developed and their parameters were fitted from experimental results. Then, a CFD model, combining hydrodynamics and biochemical reactions, was developed and solved to simulate local transient flow and dynamic behaviors of biofilm growth and substrate (glucose) biodregradation in the FPB. The CFD simulation results were evaluated by studying hydrodynamics characterization in the FPB and comparing simulated DO profiles with experimental DO profiles within the biofilm section. The hydraulic behaviour corresponds to a laminar flow and simulated DO profiles illustrate a satisfactory agreement with experimental data for different biofilm densities. - Abstract
Monitoring the biological activity in biotrickling filters is difficult since it implies estimating biomass concentration and its growth yield, which can hardly be measured in immobilized biomass systems. In this study, the characterization of a sulfide-oxidizing nitrate-reducing biomass obtained from an anoxic biotrickling filter was performed through the application of respirometric and titrimetric techniques. Previously, the biomass was maintained in a continuous stirred tank reactor under steady-state conditions resulting in a growth yield of 0.328 +/- 0.045 g VSS/g S. To properly assess biological activity in respirometric tests, abiotic assays were conducted to characterize the stripping of CO2 and sulfide. The global mass transfer coefficient for both processes was estimated. Subsequently, different respirometric tests were performed: (1) to solve the stoichiometry related to the autotrophic denitrification of sulfide using either nitrate or nitrite as electron acceptors, (2) to evaluate the inhibition caused by nitrite and sulfide on sulfide oxidation, and (3) to propose, calibrate, and validate a kinetic model considering both electron acceptors in the overall anoxic biodesulfurization process. The kinetic model considered a Haldane-type equation to describe sulfide and nitrite inhibitions, a non-competitive inhibition to reflect the effect of sulfide on the elemental sulfur oxidation besides single-step denitrification since no nitrite was produced during the biological assays., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (author’s final draft)

The chemical composition of lipophilic extractives from Juniperus communis used for cosmetic, medicinaland food additives was studied. Herein we report the extraction of labdane-type diterpenoids from theneedles of the common juniper (Juniperus communis ssp. communis var. communis L.), and identification ofthem as the major class of compounds in this species. Furthermore, and to the best of our knowledge weprovide the first-ever report some of these compounds (nor-16- imbricatolic, nor-16-acetylimbricatolicand acetylimbricatolic acids) as natural compounds. Imbricataloic and imbricatolic acids were the mostabundant compounds, accounting for 65% of the total extract. We also found long-chain secondary alco-hols (n-alkan-10-ols) and secondary/secondary alkanediols (4,10-, 5,10-, 6,10-, 7,10-), which we reporthere for the first time ever in the genus Juniperus. - Abstract
The optimization of biofiltration technologies can be addressed improving the knowledge of the process taking place within biofilms, mainly biokinetics and mass transport. Biokinetics are usually defined using different methodologies, such as respirometric and titrimetric tests. Mass transport within biofilms is usually described as diffusion through a homogeneous phase, despite it is accepted that biofilms are very heterogeneous. Thus, a quantitative understanding of how biofilm structure is linked to mass transport is essential to develop reliable models. For this purpose different works have collected the results of various diffusion studies, proposing correlations between biofilm density and mass transport. However the reliability of these correlations, widely used in modeling works, is under suspect because data used in their construction are highly dependent on the experimental conditions where they were obtained. The goal of this paper was to experimentally quantify the effective diffusivity inside biofilms, using a specific microsensor, as function of biomass density, for a specific microbial population and substrate. In addition, biofilm diffusivity was measured at different hydrodynamic conditions. - Abstract
A mathematical dynamic model describing biological removal of high loads of H2S from biogas streams through a biotrickling filter (BTF) was developed, calibrated and validated to a range of specific experimental conditions of a lab-scale BTF. This model takes into account the main processes occurring in the three phases of the desulfurizing BTF (gas, liquid and biofilm phase) in a co-current configuration flow mode. This model attempts to describe accurately intermediate products obtained from H2S oxidation using kinetic models, previously developed using respirometric techniques with biomass samples obtained from the same BTF set up used here. Previous to the model parameters calibration, a sensitivity analysis was performed in order to focus the parameters estimation on those parameters that showed a highest influence on modelling results over the main process variables. To calibrate the model, an objective function considering the difference between the experimental and the predicted data was minimized. Experimental data for model calibration corresponded to a period of 5 days of operation of the BTF under stepwise increasing H2S concentrations between 2000 and 10000 ppmv. Once the model was calibrated, model was validated by simulating a period of 2 months of operation of the BTF at an average concentration of 2000 ppmv. - Abstract
A novel microelectrode array sensor was fabricated using MEMS technology on a needle, and then applied to real-time measurement of dissolved oxygen (DO) inside biofilms. The sensor consists of eleven gold disk microelectrodes and a rectangular auxiliary electrode along them and an external & internal reference electrode. Three kinds of sensors were designed and their responses were characterized and evaluated under various environmental conditions. The arrays exhibit a linear response to DO in the 0 - 8 mg L-1 concentration range in water, high sensitivity, repeatability, and low limits of detection (< 0.11 mg L-1) and quantification (0.38 mg L-1). The sensors were then validated against a commercial Clark-type microelectrode and applied to profiling of DO in a heterotrophic biofilm cultivated in a flat-plate bioreactor. It is shown that the sensor array can provide a multipoint, simultaneous snapshot profile of DO inside a biofilm with high spatial resolution due to its micrometric dimensions. - Abstract
Adsorption of two widespread emerging water contaminants (atrazine and paracetamol) onto three different activated carbons was investigated. The carbons were characterized and the influence of their physicochemical properties on the adsorption performance of atrazine and paracetamol was evaluated. The adsorption equilibrium data were fitted to different adsorption isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich) while the adsorption rates were described using three different kinetic models (pseudo second order, intraparticle diffusion and a new approach based on diffusion-reaction models). The results indicated that hydrophobic character of the compounds does not affect the sorption capacity of the tested carbons but does influence the uptake rate. The model proposed, based on mass balances, lead to interpret and compare the kinetic of different adsorbents in contrast to classical empirical models. The model is a simple and powerful tool able to satisfactorily estimate the sorption capacities and kinetics of the carbons under different operation conditions by means of only two parameters with physical meaning. All the carbons studied adsorbed paracetamol more effectively than atrazine, possibly due to the fact that sorption takes place by H-bonding interactions., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (author’s final draft)

- Abstract
The European Educational Institutions have the challenge and the commitment to enhance multilingual competence and teaching curricular subjects in a foreign language is seen as one of the most promising alternatives. In that context, professors teaching different engineering subjects at the School of Engineering of the UPC at Manresa (EPSEM) have been involved in projects aiming at analyzing the current linguistic situation and developing some on-line open access materials using CLIL as a strategy. They formed the u-Linguatech Research Group on Multilingual Communication in Science and Technology in order to provide such resources in an effective and efficient way. In this paper, we focus on students’ perception of the improvement of their multilingual competence throughout their Engineering degree, by means of subjects taught in English by non-native speakers. Data about the English level of current students are taken into account. - Abstract
In the study of leaves from the halotolerant saltcedar (Tamarix canariensis Willd.) we have found a new abundant source of resorcinolic as well as guaiacolic compounds. A homologous series of 5-n-alkylresorcinols with long side alkyl chain reported previously in the literature almost exclusively in cereals are described here for the first time in Tamaricaceae. These polyketide derived phenolic compounds are characterized by a series ranging from n-C15 to n-C27 and maximizing at n-C21 including non-negligible amounts of the even-numbered homologues. We also have characterized for the first time as natural compounds a homologous series of 5-n-alkylguaiacols similarly constituted by an odd-numbered alkyl chain linked to the benzene ring at position 5. They also include a hydroxyl group at carbon 1 of the phenolic nucleus and a methoxy group at position 3. The homologues are in the range of 13-27 carbon atoms (Cmax at C21). Finally, we firstly report in Tamaricaceae eight series of unsymmetrical secondary alcohols ranging from n-C25 to n-C35 with hentriacontan-12-ol as the major homologue. This saltcedar leaves waxes contained high amounts of alkylresorcinol (17,2 g/kg dw), alkylguaiacol (14,4 g/kg dw) and secondary alcohols (44,4 g/kg dw)., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (author’s final draft)

- Abstract
Polymeric supports are presented as an alternative to granular activated carbon (GAC) for organic contaminant removal from groundwater using permeable reactive barriers (PRB). The search for suitable polymeric sorbents for hydrocarbon extraction from aqueous streams has prompted the synthesis of new resins incorporating new functionalities or modifying the polymer network properties that solve many of the existing problems. Between them, the new type of polymeric sorbents Macronet Hypersol containing a styrene–divinylbenzene macroporous hyperreticulated network has been evaluated. Because of their potential sorptive properties, tests were conducted to determine the feasibility of using them as a low-cost reactive material for groundwater applications. The present work describes the sorption of six polycyclic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from aqueous solution onto both Macronet polymeric sorbent MN200 and granular activated carbon. Batch experiments were performed to determine loading rates of a family of PAHs (naphthalene, fluorene, anthracene, acenaphthene, pyrene, and fluoranthene), from a simple two-rings PAH (naphthalene) up to a four-ring PAH (pyrene). The behavior of a non-functionalized Macronet support (MN200) was compared with the behavior of a recognized material, granular activated carbon (GAC). Analyses of the respective rate data with three theoretical models (pseudo-first-and pseudo-second-order reaction models and the Elovich model) were used to describe the PAH sorption kinetics. Sorption rate constants were determined by graphical analysis of the proposed models. The study showed that sorption systems followed a pseudo-first-order reaction model, although the pseudo-second-order reaction model provides an acceptable description of the sorption process. Graphical analysis showed that the sorption process with activated carbon is a more complex process than the one observed for hyper-cross-linked polymers (MN200). Several studies have demonstrated the presence of pollutants from the pharmaceutical industry in surface and groundwater. The main inputs of pollutants come from households, hospitals and the industry and many of these compounds are not completely removed by WWTPs. The purpose of this research is to study the adsorption of paracetamol, phenol and salicylic acid using coal-based activated carbons. A lignite from Mequinenza (M) and an anthracite from Coto Minero Narcea (CN) from Spain were chemically activated with alkaline agents obtaining two activated carbons (MAC and CNAC). Two commercial activated carbons widely used in water treatment (F400 and NPK) were selected for comparison purposes. The activated carbons were characterized and the results showed a high surface BET (1839 m2 g−1) and total pore volume (0.83 cm3 g−1) on CNAC while MAC was characterized by high sulphur content (6%). Vapour isotherms indicated a chemical interaction between the surface functional groups of MAC and the water molecules. The highest uptake of the three pharmaceutical compounds was achieved by CNAC. MAC showed a high affinity for anion salicylates (at pH 4–8). The maximum adsorption capacity of the pollutants onto the activated carbons followed the order salicylic acid > phenol > paracetamol which can be explained by hydrophobicity.
