International audience; This volume presents the first critical edition, along with an English translation, of the core chapters of a Sanskrit work of perhaps the thirteenth century surviving in five nineteenth-century witnesses: the Matsyendrasaṃhitā. The work is useful as a primary source for the history of yoga and the Śaiva religions: it reveals important links between the tantric cults of Kubjikā and Tripurā and early haṭhayoga. In addition, its frame-story (in chapters 1 and 55) relates a unique version of the yogin Matsyendra’s legend in which his disciple Gorakṣa is a Chola king. The edition is bracketed by a detailed introduction and by detailed notes on the constitution of the text, as well as an annotated translation.Ce volume présente la première édition critique, ainsi qu’une traduction anglaise, des chapitres formant le noyau d’un ouvrage sanskrit datant probablement du XIIIe siècle aujourd’hui conservé dans cinq manuscrits du XIXe siècle : la Matsyendrasaṃhitā. Il s’agit d’une source précieuse pour l’histoire du yoga et des religions śivaïtes, révélant des liens importants entre les cultes tantriques de Kubjikā et Tripurā et les premières formes du haṭhayoga. Le récit-cadre (chapitres 1 et 55) relate une version unique de la légende du yogin Matsyendra, dans laquelle son disciple Gorakṣa est identifié à un roi Cōḻa. International audience; This paper discusses the results of a new geo-archaeological study on the nephrite (jade) axes discovered in southern Oman (Dhofar Governorate). The research presents a first account of the geological composition and the morphological structure of such tools and it outlines a preliminary distribution network of jade axe-heads across Southern Arabia. After the discovery of the first analysed sample at Shaqat Jadailah SQJ-3, in the Rub’ al-Khali Desert (Dhofar), four other archaeological axe-adze samples collected from southern Oman, were analysed using micro-Raman Spectroscopy and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF). We compared the analysed samples to other nephrite axes collected in the first pioneering exploration of Gertrude Caton-Thompson (Yemen) and Wilfred Thesiger (South Oman). These objects were then correlated with nephrite raw material from the basement exposures in Yemen. Available data show that the raw material originating in Yemen reached the Neolithic groups of Southern Rub’ al-Khali and coastal Dhofar most likely during the 6th-5th millennium BC, following a similar path to the obsidian route. The colour, texture and composition, together with the presence of other classes of lithic artefacts such as the trihedral projectile points, indicate that during this period Southern Oman was fully integrated into long-distance exchange networks. The analysis of the collected samples show that they are made exclusively from nephrite, and not from other general “green stones”. Considering the high hardness and toughness of the nephrite, this fact allows the hypothesis of a deliberate choice in the selection of raw material for its durability or prestige value. © 2021

International audience; Between 1999 and 2016, preventive archaeological excavations before the construction of lines 1 and 6 of the Naples metro in Piazza Municipio provided new evidence about the coastal landscape by the ancient harbour basin. These investigations led to the discovery of the remains of seven wrecks (Napoli A-C, and E-H) dating to the Hellenistic era and the Roman Empire. This paper presents the study of the architectural characteristics of four wrecks uncovered in 2013-2015 in the passageway connecting the metro stations to the modern tourist harbour (Stazione Marittima) and will suggest hypotheses concerning the function of the vessels.

International audience; Cet article présente les activités menées sur le terrain en 2020 dans le cadre du projet « Modes d’habiter à Pompéi à l’époque républicaine : diffusion et utilisation du type de la maison à atrium testudinatum ». Les recherches ont été consacrées, cette année, au relevé par photogrammétrie des structures in situ de I 16, 5-7, au rangement des mobiliers retrouvés pendant le dégagement d’une partie de la maison 5, et stockés à son intérieur, ainsi qu’à l’analyse stratigraphique d’un secteur de cette même maison, les pièces 13-15. L’examen a permis de restituer l’histoire de construction de cet espace, dans laquelle il a été possible de distinguer cinq phases, décrites dans l'article. Les données récoltées ont été enregistrées dans une base de données structurée, en partant des modèles élaborés par l’Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione. De plus, des photographies des peintures conservées à l’intérieur des pièces 14 et 15 ont été effectuées, par fluorescence ultraviolette (UV) et par infrarouge proche (IR et VIL), afin de retrouver les détails estompés et d’évaluer la distribution spatiale des pigments employés. Les premiers résultats de l'imagerie multispectrale ont été présentés par Marcella Leone.

International audience; This paper investigates a general framework for synchronous educational language games that simultaneously allows researchers to crowdsource learner answers in a controlled environment. Our prototype Substituto allows teachers and students to interact in real-time while undergoing language learning exercises; ensuring that the learner’s progress is not hurt by the introduction of crowdsourcing elements. We evaluate Substituto with a small-scale user study that focuses on training the use of English verb-particle constructions (VPCs), such as break down or take over, and test their use with second language learners of English of different proficiency levels over five pilot sessions. With the study we aim to ensure that our prototypical implementation behaves as expected and to identify any major design flaws that should be addressed. The preliminary results we achieved in order to evaluate the educational value, the user experience and the crowdsourcing capacity of XYZ-Bot confirm that it has the potential to become a valuable asset for language learning, a pleasant learning instrument and a crowdsourcing tool for collecting linguistic knowledge.

International audience; Chronique des activités archéologiques de l'École française de Rome Les cités vésuviennes | 2020 Modes d'habiter à Pompéi à l'époque républicaine Diffusion et utilisation du type de la maison à atrium testudinatumCet article présente un nouveau projet de recherche centré sur l’habitat urbain de Pompéi et en particulier sur un type de maison, celui à atrium testudinatum, largement diffusé dans la ville aux IIIe et IIe s. av. J.‐C., mais qui tombe en désuétude vers la fin de l’époque républicaine.Après avoir défini les objectifs du projet, les maisons sélectionnées comme cas d’étude sont présentées. Les unités VI 11, 11-12/7 et I 16, 5-7 représentent un échantillon varié de ce type d’habitation et permettent ainsi d’analyser des formes et des modes d’utilisation distincts de la maison à atrium testudinatum. En effet, elles ont été édifiées à des moments divers de l’époque républicaine et témoignent de niveaux de richesse hétérogènes, à l’appui des caractéristiques de leur agencement et de leurs décors. De plus, ces maisons appartiennent à deux secteurs de la ville qui ont connu un développement urbain et social différencié et spécifique. Plus approfondie est la présentation de la domus VI 11, 11-12/7, à laquelle une première mission d’étude a été consacrée en 2019.

International audience; While conceptualizing populism as “a cultural-relational performative style” (Moffitt et al. 2016), this paperseeks to explore whether and the extent to which semantic categories of populism and the emotional frames ofanger and fear are combined in the tweets posted by selected Italian politicians and political parties on theirTwitter account. Methodologically, a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches was adopted:Content Analysis, to pinpoint recurrent thematic patterns that are relevant to the research purpose; as well asapproaches of Multiple Correspondence Analysis, to verify whether the combination of the chosen variables isrecurrent within the Twitter corpus purposely built for the analysis. The same tools were used to exploredifferences in the use of populism and emotional frames on the basis of gender, provenance and the local versusnational political activity of the politicians under analysis. Results have showed that there exists a correlationbetween the use of given semantic categories of populism (i.e. ‘Appeal to people’, ‘Ostracizing the others’,‘Attacking the elite’) and the frame of anger. The combined use of these categories was mostly detected in thetweeting style of Italian politicians and parties that collocate on the right-wing political spectrum. Moreover,preliminary findings showed a significant difference in the degree of populism depending either on the nationalor local political activity.

International audience; We present edition 1.2 of the PARSEME shared task on identification of verbal multiword expressions (VMWEs). Lessons learned from previous editions indicate that VMWEs have low ambiguity, and that the major challenge lies in identifying test instances never seen in the training data. Therefore, this edition focuses on unseen VMWEs. We have split annotated corpora so that the test corpora contain around 300 unseen VMWEs, and we provide non-annotated raw corpora to be used by complementary discovery methods. We released annotated and raw corpora in 14 languages, and this semi-supervised challenge attracted 7 teams who submitted 9 system results. This paper describes the effort of corpus creation, the task design, and the results obtained by the participating systems, especially their performance on unseen expressions.

Ce volume sur les tombes de la propriété Colucci correspond au second volet des recherches que Serenella De Natale avait consacrées à la nécropole de Pontecagnano. C’est dans le même esprit qu’a été choisie comme couverture la photo des portes d’une maison de Nairn qu’elle avait prise en 1989 en Écosse.; Ai giorni nostri Pontecagnano è poco più di un sobborgo industriale che con qualche fatica si affaccia sul golfo di Salerno. La vicinanza alla città ne scoraggia la crescita; il fiume Picentino, che lambiva a NW l'insediamento antico facilitando lo scambio con le boscose pendici appenniniche, si riconosce appena per la poca acqua che scorre in un vasto alveo asciutto, e scomparse sono anche le due lagune che a SW consentivano il riparo più favorevole per le navi antiche.In questo quadro è difficile riconquistare il quadro naturale di quello che fu uno dei più grandi abitati della costa Tirrenica, nei primi secoli dell'ultimo millennio a.C. : il Picentino, in parte navigabile, collegava la costa ai villaggi indigeni situati sulle retrostanti colline, mentre un guado permetteva di risalire verso Nord, raggiungendo la pianura campana: l'approdo del Picentino trovava una utile alternativa nelle due lagune situate dietro la duna costiera, che offrivano un riparo nascosto ai pirati e alle navi che risalivano le coste della penisola venendo dall'Egeo e dal Vicino Oriente.Per un paradosso tipico dell'archeologia protostorica la vita dell'abitato antico si conosce attraverso l'indagine dei suoi sepolcreti. Sappiamo così che le navi partite dalla Grecia, per riallacciare i rapporti con il Tirreno interrottisi con la distruzione dei palazzi micenei, trovavano a Pontecagnano uno scalo priviliegiato: lo dimostrano le coppe per il vino prodotte nella lontana Eubea, che tra la fine del IX e i primi anni dell'VIII sec. i capitani delle navi offrivano, colmi di vino, ai capi della comunità locale trasmettendo loro la cerimonia del simposio. In questo modo essi si aprivano le porte verso le coste campane, e l'Etruria. Insieme ad essi veleggiavano le navi fenicie cariche di ornamenti e oggetti di lusso, graditi alle nascenti aristocrazie locali. Quale tramite migliore per l'Etruria, ricca di metalli, degli abitanti di Pontecagnano, anch'essi etruschi trapiantati a Sud tra le genti italiche della Valle del Sarno e della Penisola Sorrentina?Lo scavo che qui si presenta, condotto da una giovane e già valente archeologa, Serenella de Natale, preziosa collaboratrice dell'Università Orientale e del Centre Jean Bérard, ha permesso di riconoscere, attraverso una tecnica raffinata e una esauriente documentazione, le tombe di quella élite di Etruschi immigrati che, come capita alle minoranze in terra straniera, erano la punta più avanzata dello sviluppo socio-culturale del basso Tirreno. La loro immagine doveva emergere viva a chi seguiva la strada antica che attraversava la necropoli, attraverso le vistose coperture delle tombe che avevano l'aspetto di piattaforme circolari di tufo grigio. L'esame degli oggetti che accompagnavano i defunti nell'estrema dimora, con l'intreccio del vasellame indigeno con le ceramiche greche e gli ornamenti orientali, restituiscono l'immagine della complessità di questo singolare sito protostorico, che fu luogo d'incontro e di stimolo tra diverse culture.

In the last decades, European Third Sector Organizations have been increasingly affected by marketization and the reduction of public resources for social services, hence pushed to develop new strategies to accomplish their social mission while remaining economically efficient. The existing literature suggests that the activation of networking activities can be a strategy to overcome these problems. By using a partially mixed-methods approach, this study investigates factors that stimulate the TSOs’ networking and attitudes toward different types of informal and formal networks. Our results suggest that TSOs try to cope with contextual challenges by activating both formal and informal networks, depending on financial and structural opportunities, but also suggest that the rationalities moving TSOs are highly heterogeneous.

La Mission archéologique « Italie du Sud » a été créée en 2000. Dès sa création, elle n'a pas été attachée à un site en particulier, mais elle a été conçue comme un soutien du Ministère des Affaires étrangères aux recherches archéologiques françaises effectuées en Italie Méridionale. Depuis le début, la Mission a concentré ses travaux sur deux thématiques en synergie avec les axes du projet scientifique du Centre Jean Bérard, USR 3133 du CNRS et de l'École française de Rome : « Aux marges des colonies grecques » et « Artisanat urbain et vie économique antiques en Italie méridionale ». Les actions du programme ont porté au cours du quadriennal 2016-2019 sur 4 sites archéologiques majeurs : Cumes et Pompéi en Campanie, Arpi dans les Pouilles et l’Incoronata en Basilicate.

International audience; We present here a prototype of a role playing game which allows to both i) crowdsource lexical units (including idioms) for a language and ii) help the player improve their knowledge of the language. Our implementation of the game is focused on non-standardized languages, for which the intergenerational transmission is not as efficient as it used to be. In order to address this, we incentivize the participation of a "Grand Guru", from whom the player needs help to fulfill their mission.

This article analyzes the articulation between mobility and technology within life trajectories marked by migration, exile, and the search for economic achievement. It does so by focusing on a Nigerian couple’s (attempted) itinerary of return migration from Italy to Nigeria, and on the tensions that surround the role played by a specific transport technology, the shipping container, within this process. It highlights how, throughout the itinerary that brings the container from Italy to Nigeria, its social meaning and that of the cargo stored in it become the center of a series of tense interactions, in which diverging imaginaries about transnational mobility, migration, and life abroad come to the fore, and provoke radical transformations in the life of the people involved in the itinerary of the container itself.

International audience; The operation of “urban archaeology” started in Naples during the construction of metro lines 1 and 6 has been a unique opportunity to investigate the coastal landscape facing the ancient town. In 2004, the harbor basin and the remains of three boats (Naples A-C) dating to the imperial era have been investigated in the Municipio station shaft. Between 2013 and 2015, the investigations for the line 6 station shaft has clarified the situation of the shoreline overlooking the harbor basin, while the investigation into the junction zone between the station shafts and the Stazione Marittima (area 4) led to the discovery of four new wrecks dating between the Republican era and the Empire (Naples E-H). The communication presents the preliminary results of archaeological excavation, documentation and recovery of these new wrecks.; L’operazione di “archeologia urbana” avviata a Napoli nell’ambito dei lavori per la realizzazione delle linee 1 e 6 della Metropolitana si è rivelata un’occasione irripetibile di conoscenza del paesaggio costiero antistante il nucleo più antico della città. Multiword expressions (MWEs) are known as a “pain in the neck” due to their idiosyncratic behaviour. While some categories of MWEs have been largely stud- ied, verbal MWEs (VMWEs) such as to take a walk, to break one’s heart or to turn off have been relatively rarely modelled. We describe an initiative meant to bring about substantial progress in understanding, modelling and processing VMWEs. In this joint effort carried out within a European research network we elaborated a universal terminology and annotation methodology for VMWEs. Its main outcomes, available under open licenses, are unified annotation guidelines, and a corpus of over 5.4 million words and 62 thousand annotated VMWEs in 18 languages. &nbsp

This contribution describes the results of the second edition of the shared task on automatic identification of verbal multiword expressions, organized as part of the LAW-MWE-CxG 2018 workshop, co-located with COLING 2018, concerning both the PARSEME-IT corpus and the systems that took part in the task for the Italian language. The paper will focus on the main advances in comparison to the first edition of the task. Il presente contributo descrive i risultati della seconda edizione dello ’Shared task on automatic identification of verbal multiword expressions’ organizzato nell’ambito del LAW-MWE-CxG 2018 workshop realizzato durante il COLING 2018 riguardo sia il corpus PARSEME-IT e i sistemi che hanno preso parte nel task per quel che riguarda l’italiano. L’articolo tratta i principali progressi ottenuti a confronto con la prima edizione del task.

International audience; Durante gli anni di ricerca sulle necropoli settentrionali di Cuma, il Centre Jean Bérard, in collaborazione con la Soprintendenza Archeologica di Napoli, ha portato alla luce una serie di sepolture di II-I sec. a.C. Lo studio congiunto del palinsesto stratigrafico, dei corredi, del repertorio epigrafico e dei dati antropologici ha permesso di apportare nuove informazioni sulla società cumana e soprattutto aggiungere ulteriori dati sull’autorappresentazione funeraria dei diversi gruppi etnici all’interno della città.Cuma nel 334 a.C. ottiene la civitas sine suffragio e nel 318 a.C. è sottoposta alla giurisdizione della Praefectura Capuam Cumas. I risultati delle ricerche degli ultimi anni hanno ampliato notevolmente il quadro delle conoscenze sul periodo osco a Cuma e, più in generale, sulla fase tra la metà del II e i primi decenni del I sec. a.C. quando si registrano significativi interventi architettonico-edilizi in diversi punti della città (foro, fortificazioni, acropoli, etc.). Tutte le città dei Campi Flegrei conoscono in questa fase un periodo di grande vivacità economica durante il quale la regione riveste un ruolo di primo piano nei contatti e negli scambi nel bacino del Mediterraneo. La fine delle guerre puniche e la fondazione della colonia romana marittima di Puteoli nel 194 a.C. ne accelerano notevolmente lo sviluppo economico. L’acquisizione nel 180 a.C. del diritto di usare il latino negli atti pubblici e nel commercio (Liv. 40.43.1) lascia presupporre che a Cuma si sia realizzato il processo di “romanizzazione”.La zona presa in esame in questo contributo si estende fuori dalle mura settentrionali, lungo gli assi stradali che uscendo dalle porte principali della città si dirigevano verso nord. In questa area, tra la seconda metà del II e la metà del I sec. a.C. il paesaggio inizia ad animarsi della presenza di sontuose tombe a camera semi ipogeica e di un cospicuo numero di tombe individuali a cremazione.L’analisi dei dati sembra indicare che nella seconda metà del II sec. a.C. il gruppo umano in esame non prediliga un rituale in particolare: cremazione e inumazione sono attestate in maniera univoca. Quello che però sembra mutare completamente è la tipologia architettonica, in apparenza legata alla pratica funeraria adottata: a pochi metri di distanza tra loro insistono tombe a camera per inumazioni plurime e tombe a “parallelepipedi con stele” o a fossa con cippo predisposte per accogliere i resti cremati di un solo individuo. Nel caso delle prime, si tratta soprattutto di tombe a camera semi ipogeica con volte a botte, sormontate da semata. Queste ultime, messe in opera con grandi blocchi in tufo giallo flegreo, ospitano al loro interno due o tre letti o cassoni funerari. Il rito adottato, come già detto, è l’inumazione. Il defunto è posto su un leggero strato di sabbia accanto al quale è deposto il corredo funerario che appare fortemente standardizzato ma di qualità non trascurabile. Si tratta nel caso d’inumazioni femminili di oggetti che alludono a due sfere del mundus muliebris : da una parte, attraverso la deposizione di manufatti legati al mondo della cosmesi e della cura personale è rappresentata la potenzialità seduttiva della donna mentre, dall’altra, fusi e conocchie ne delineano il ruolo di mulier lanifica, ovvero di donna che ha realizzato il matrimonio. Il ruolo sociale dell’uomo invece non è enfatizzato attraverso il corredo funerario; questo, quando presente, si limita al solo strigile che potrebbe alludere all’educazione (atletica) del defunto. La mancata connotazione, come nelle fasi precedenti, dell’uomo come guerriero potrebbe far ipotizzare un ruolo differente all’interno della società: egli è ora un cittadino non solo osco ma anche romano e non ha bisogno di armi o altri oggetti per connotarsi come tale. Pertanto, la tomba all’interno della necropoli potrebbe costituirne il riflesso del ruolo occupato all’interno della società. Non vanno dimenticati, infine, gli stili che, solitamente accompagnati da un calamaio, connotano il defunto come soggetto alfabetizzato e colto. Contemporanee a queste sepolture sono le tombe a “parallelepipedi con stele superiore”. Tale tipologia tombale prevede un ricettacolo in tufo, composto da due grandi blocchi scavati all’interno per dar alloggio al cinerario sempre in ceramica. All’interno dell’urna, oltre alle ossa combuste, si ritrovano alcuni resti del corredo funerario cremato insieme al defunto; oggetti che non si discostano molto dal repertorio tipico delle tombe a camera. In alcuni casi, al momento della cremazione il corpo doveva essere posto su un letto come testimoniano i frammenti combusti in osso finemente lavorato all’interno dei cinerari.Alcune sepolture conservano sulla parte sommitale dei cippi o delle stele iscrizioni in osco o in latino che connotano gli individui come di origine osca. I nomi incisi nel tufo, in molti casi, sono collegabili a famiglie già attestate a Cuma e nel territorio.Con il sopraggiungere del I sec. a.C. a queste tombe si affianca una cospicua quantità di tombe individuali, probabilmente pertinenti ai ceti inferiori della popolazione. Si tratta di sepolture secondarie a cremazione segnalate da cippi in tufo simili a quelli attestati nella fase precedente. Le ossa combuste sono deposte all’interno di urne cinerarie, recipienti d’uso quotidiano generalmente adibiti alla cottura dei cibi. Quasi del tutto assenti sono gli oggetti di corredo; alcuni balsamari in ceramica documentano l’esistenza di rituali funerari in relazione con le tombe. In questa fase, la parte sommitale dei cippi e delle stele è caratterizzata da un’iscrizione unicamente in latino che documenta la presenza di individui di cittadinanza romana, alcuni dei quali di origine osca. Lo scavo degli ossuari e l’analisi antropologica dei contesti tombali hanno permesso di evidenziare non solo i dati biologici delle persone deposte ma hanno fornito anche utili informazioni riguardo le pratiche post-crematorie e su alcuni gesti inerenti la conduzione di una cremazione, la raccolta dei resti ossei (l’ossilegium) e la loro deposizione in tomba. Le sepolture qui presentate mostrano bene la vivacità culturale della città flegrea: una città che, nonostante continui a conservare un substrato culturale greco (Strab. 5.4.4.) e nonostante si sia affacciata al mondo romano in maniera preponderante, continua ad essere influenzata da una forte componente osca (Vell. 1.4.2). In questa società, che potremmo definire multietnica, le famiglie osche o di origine osca oltre a mantenere la loro integrità culturale sembrano detenere anche il potere politico ed economico della città. Questo dato non si evince solo dalle pratiche funerarie ma è ben documentato anche da alcune epigrafi presenti nei settori pubblici della città, dove l’utilizzo dell’osco nelle iscrizioni dedicatorie è un ulteriore forte segnale del potere della compagine italica.Quello che emerge è la presenza di una comunità di individui legati da una medesima origine che, sia nel privato, quindi nella pratica funeraria, sia nel pubblico, afferma e sottolinea la sua appartenenza ad un gruppo etnico. Heii, Modii, Auxii, Antii, Staii pur essendosi avvicinati alla civiltà romana, che sempre di più fa sentire il suo peso in Campania, nel rituale funerario si “latinizzano” pur continuando ad autorappresentarsi fino agli inizi del I secolo alla “maniera osca”.

International audience; The urban archaeology operation undertaken in Naples for the metro lines 1 and 6 was a rare and unique opportunity to investigate the coastal landscape of the ancient city. Between 2004 and 2015, archaeologists, led by Daniela Giampaola of the Archaeological Superintendence of Campania, investigated a large portion of a port basin dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman period in Piazza Municipio in front of Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino).In addition to the port infrastructures, the remains of seven vessels dating between the Hellenistic and the Imperial era were discovered. The paper will present a preliminary study of the characteristics of the remains of the four vessels discovered in 2013-2015 (Napoli E, F, G and H) and will suggest hypotheses concerning their original function.

International audience; L’importante opération d’archéologie urbaine entreprise à Naples pour la construction des lignes 1 et 6 de la métropolitaine a constitué une occasion rare et unique pour la connaissance du paysage côtier de la ville antique. L’équipe d’archéologues, dirigés par Mme Daniela Giampaola de la Surintendance archéologique de Naples, ont étudiés entre 2000 et 2015 sur le chantier de la Place Municipio une importante portion du bassin portuaire d’époque hellénistique et romaine jusqu’à son comblement à l’Antiquité tardive et à ses transformations à partir du Moyen Age.Outre les infrastructures portuaires, sept épaves datées entre l’époque hellénistique et l’époque impériale ont été mises au jour. Conservées de façon très variée, elles nous renseignent sur des types de bateaux inédits, parfois liés à l’activité portuaire.Mais les recherches dans le port antique de Naples ont également restitués un nombre relativement important d’objets liés à la navigation (ancres en bois et en pierre, pièces d’accastillage et de gréement des navires, outils liés au travail des charpentiers de marine). Dans une position de remploi, des éléments très rares propres à la propulsion (rames, rames-gouvernails et petits mâts) ont ainsi été trouvés.Ce sont ces objets les plus significatifs liés à la navigation que nous entendons présenter dans cette communication.

The characterization and quantification of human dental enamel microstructure, in both permanent and deciduous teeth, allows us to document crucial growth parameters and to identify stressful events, thus contributing to the reconstruction of the past life history of an individual. Most studies to date have focused on the more accessible post-natal portion of the deciduous dental enamel, even though the analysis of prenatal enamel is pivotal in understanding fetal growth, and reveals information about the mother’s health status during pregnancy. This contribution reports new data describing the prenatal enamel development of 18 central deciduous incisors from the Imperial Roman necropolis of Velia (I-II century CE, Salerno, Italy). Histomorphometrical analysis was performed to collect data on prenatal crown formation times, daily secretion rates and enamel extension rates. Results for the Velia sample allowed us to derive a new regression formula, using a robust statistical approach, that describes the average rates of deciduous enamel formation. This can now be used as a reference for pre-industrial populations. The same regression formula, even\ud when daily incremental markings are difficult to visualize, may provide a clue to predicting the proportion of infants born full term and pre-term in an archaeological series.

International audience; Transportation networks have become a subject of scientific interest from the second half of the twentieth century. Studies related to growth of the transportation networks after resuming its activity after thirty years have changed focus from the topological complexity of transportation network to their structural properties. In other words, topological complexity has changed into structural complexity. In this paper, this lost scientific direction will be reminded to the present society. Firstly, early studies on the topological complexity will be summarized and compared to each other. Secondly, new studies will be summarized and analyzed in terms of topological complexity. Finally, in conclusion, a means of measuring the topological complexity will be discussed and gaps in current studies will be highlighted.

International audience; Since 2013, the authors have conducted archaeological surveys across the Al-Jawf province in northern Saudi Arabia. In the past two seasons, 48 sites were mapped and characterized by the presence of Levallois technology and, therefore, attributed to the Middle Paleolithic of Arabia. Preferential Levallois reduction using different methods of dorsal core preparation have been found at these sites. The technological variability includes Nubian Levallois methods, preferential Levallois with centripetal preparation, as well as recurrent centripetal reduction methods. In Arabia, sites with Nubian Levallois reduction are known from southern Oman, eastern Yemen, and central Saudi Arabia, while in Africa this reduction method has been identified across much of the northeastern continent. Preferential Levallois with centripetal preparation and recurrent centripetal Levallois methods have been found across Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. Outside of Arabia, these methods have been found in many regions across the Old World. In this paper, we present the results from technological analyses on the Middle Paleolithic assemblages from the newly discovered Al-Jawf sites. The technological data are used to place these sites into a wider regional framework, assessing whether connections with known lithic industries from across the Near East and northeastern Africa can be surmised.
