Abstract

International audience; For the first time, a Zn1.1Ga1.8Ge0.1O4 transparent spinel ceramic has been fully densified by spark plasma sintering. XRD measurements show that this ceramic is composed of a pure cubic spinel phase. SEM analysis revealed a homogeneous and dense microstructure with the average grain size being 200 ± 100 nm. The transmittance of these fine-grained ceramics reached 70 % in the visible range and is very close to 80 % at 2 µm, thus close to the Tmax value deduced from the measurement of the refractive index. The ceramics exhibit excellent mechanical properties with a Young modulus of 222 GPa, a Vickers hardness of 14.25 GPa and a thermal conductivity of 7.3 W.m−1. K−1. By doping with Cr3+ ions, transparent Zn1.1Ga1.8Ge0.1O4 ceramics present both a red luminescence and a long-lasting afterglow during several minutes. Moreover, a near infrared broadband emission at 1.3 µm is also achieved with Ni2+ ions.

Abstract

International audience; In this article, we introduce a method to exploit ultra-high dielectrophoresis (UHF-DEP) with a microfluidic radio frequency device able to sort biological cells by deflecting the trajectory of the targeted population in a continuous flow. This study highlights the capability of a high frequency lab-on-chip implemented UHF-DEP cytometer to isolate cancer stem cells (CSCs). Actually, CSCs sorting by an efficient, fast and low-cost method remains an issue. Above 20 MHz, the intracellular dielectric properties of cells determine the dielectrophoretic behavior of cells and is then very sensitive to the cell cytoplasm content. The proposed cell sorting principle exploits the combination of the fluidic drag and the repulsive dielectrophoretic forces in order to isolate CSCs hidden within differentiated cancer cells. We previously demonstrated the UHF-DEP behavior of cells, as a new type of electromagnetic biomarkers to discriminate cancer stem cells among a tumor population from colorectal cancer cell line.

This paper is a product of the Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS) working group., Explosive volcanism is a key contributor to climate variability on interannual to centennial timescales1. Understanding the far-field societal impacts of eruption-forced climatic changes requires firm event chronologies and reliable estimates of both the burden and altitude (that is, tropospheric versus stratospheric) of volcanic sulfate aerosol2, 3. However, despite progress in ice-core dating, uncertainties remain in these key factors4. This particularly hinders investigation of the role of large, temporally clustered eruptions during the High Medieval Period (HMP, 1100–1300 ce), which have been implicated in the transition from the warm Medieval Climate Anomaly to the Little Ice Age5. Here we shed new light on explosive volcanism during the HMP, drawing on analysis of contemporary reports of total lunar eclipses, from which we derive a time series of stratospheric turbidity. By combining this new record with aerosol model simulations and tree-ring-based climate proxies, we refine the estimated dates of five notable eruptions and associate each with stratospheric aerosol veils. Five further eruptions, including one responsible for high sulfur deposition over Greenland circa 1182 ce, affected only the troposphere and had muted climatic consequences. Our findings offer support for further investigation of the decadal-scale to centennial-scale climate response to volcanic eruptions.

Abstract

International audience; Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (Paxlovid®) consists of a peptidomimetic inhibitor (Nirmatrelvir) of the SARS-CoV-2 main protease and a pharmacokinetic enhancer (Ritonavir). It is approved for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19. This combination of nirmatrelvir and ritonavir can mediate significant and complex drug-drug interactions (DDIs), primarily due to the ritonavir component. Indeed, ritonavir inhibits the metabolism of nirmatrelvir through cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) leading to higher plasma concentrations and a longer half-life of nirmatrelvir. Co-administration of nirmatrelvir/ritonavir with immunosuppressant drugs (ISDs) is particularly challenging given the major involvement of CYP3A in the metabolism of most of these drugs and their narrow therapeutic ranges. Exposure of ISDs will be drastically increased through the potent ritonavir-mediated inhibition of CYP3A, resulting in an increased risk of adverse drug reactions. While a decrease in the dosage of ISDs can prevent toxicity, an inappropriate dosage regimen may also result in insufficient exposure and a risk of rejection. Here we provide some general recommendations for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of ISDs and dosing recommendations when co-administered with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir. Particularly, tacrolimus should be discontinued, or patients should be given a microdose on day-1, while cyclosporine dosage should be reduced to 20% of the initial dosage during the antiviral treatment. Dosages of mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors (m-TORis) should also be adjusted while dosages of mycophenolic acid and corticosteroids are expected to be less impacted.

International audience; Objective: To review studies conducted on the costs of dementia in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), describe their methodology and summarize costsestimates.Methods: We conducted a systematic review, searching in bibliographic databases in health, economics and social sciences, and main grey literature resources. Publications were evaluated by two independent investigators, conflict discussed, and the final decision taken by a third investigator. We included all studies presenting costs of any aspect of dementia care.Results: Overall, 6,843 title and abstract, then 74 full texts articles evaluated. Finally, 15 single studies were included. Those were from only 9 out of the 156 LMICs: China (6); Brazil (2); and one from Argentina, Colombia, Iran, Peru, Romania, Thailand and Turkey. No study was from Africa. Studies focused mainly on Alzheimer’s disease. Studies investigated all three categories of cost-of-illness i.e., medical, social and informal care costs, but items, data collection and definitions in each category were highly variable. Dementia costs tend to increase with the severity of the disease with greater medical costs in the mild stage and higher social and informal care costs in the moderate and severe stages. Costs estimates varied widely: from $327.4 to $1,266.3 for annual medical costs, from $112.4 to $5,575.0 for social costs; and costs from $324.0 to $10,031.1 for informal care. Overall, dementia care cost up to $19,101 per year for a single patient, usually at the charge of families.Conclusion: Limited studies have been conducted on dementia costs in LMICs, with none so far in Africa. It appears urgent to provide accurate evidence of the disease burden in the region to guide public health policies.

Abstract

Grapevine and wine have deeply shaped the landscapes, economy and cultures of Europe and the Mediterranean. In France, it is considered that viticulture started in the south via contacts with Mediterranean populations (Greeks, Etruscans, Phoenicians), during the second half of the 1st millennium BCE, and spread further with the Romans. Wild grapevines were nevertheless present in various areas of the country all through the Holocene. No archaeological or historical source allows us to follow the history of grapevine and viticulture over the entire Holocene period and over the whole territory.In this paper we investigate the potential of archaeological plant macroremains (seed/fruits and wood) to trace the history of the vine on a large scale. We have assembled the largest possible database of published and unpublished archaeobotanical data, comprising 4449 site-phases for seed and fruits and 1356 site-phases for wood remains. In spite of taphonomic discrepancies and imbalances in the datasets, the different types of macroremains and modes of preservation produce consistent patterns. They provide the first comprehensive picture of the spread of grapevine, fluctuations in the economic role of viticulture and grape uses over time, although some periods and regions are less documented.Grapevine remains are regularly recorded from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age in most regions showing that human societies were already familiar with the wild plant and its fruits, especially in the Mediterranean. In this region, Vitis remains become considerably more frequent and numerous during the Iron Age, from around 500 BCE onwards, testifying to the rapid and strong implantation of viticulture. Grapevine macroremains confirm that the spread of viticulture outside the Mediterranean area occurred mainly during the Roman period. However, this expansion was limited and mainly focused on the South. The main expansion into the temperate zone took place during the Middle Ages. However, the more detailed fluctuations of viticulture, particularly in relation to climate oscillations are still difficult to follow. Pip remains are mainly associated with urban sites. This is a consequence of the actual consumption of grapes and may be evidence of a viticulture centered around urban areas.

Abstract

International audience; Objectives: The diffusion of the SARS-CoV-2 Delta (B.1.617.2) variant and the waning of immune response after primary Covid-19 vaccination favoured the breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infections in vaccinated subjects. To assess the impact of vaccination, we determined the severity of infection in hospitalised patients according to vaccine status. Methods: We performed a retrospective observational study on patients hospitalised in 10 centres with a SARS-CoV-2 infection (Delta variant) from July to November 2021 by including all patients who had completed their primary vaccination at least 14 days before hospital admission and the same number of completely unvaccinated patients. We assessed the impact of vaccination and other risk factors through logistic regression. Results: We included 955 patients (474 vaccinated and 481 unvaccinated). Vaccinated patients were significantly older (75.0 [63.25-84.0] vs. 55.0 [38.0-73.0]; p < 0.001), more frequently males (55.1% (261/474) vs. 46.4% (223/481); p = 0.009), and had more comorbidities (2.0 [1.0-3.0] vs. 1.0 [0.0-2.0]; p < 0.001). Vaccinated patients were less often admitted for Covid-19 (59.3% (281/474) vs. 75.1% (361/481); p < 0.001), had less extended lung lesions (≤25%: 64.3% (117/182) vs. 38.4% (88/229); p < 0.001), required oxygen less frequently (57.5% (229/398) vs. 73.0% (270/370); p < 0.001), at a lower flow (3.0 [0.0-8.7] vs. 6.0 [2.0-50.0] L/min, p < 0.001), and for a shorter duration (3 [0.0-8.0] vs. 6 [2.0-12.0] days, p < 0.001)., and required less frequently intensive care unit admission (16.2% (60/370) vs. 36.0% (133/369); p < 0.001) but had comparable mortality in bivariate analysis (16.7% (74/443) vs. 12.2% (53/433); p = 0.075). Multivariate logistic regression showed that vaccination significantly decreased the risk of death (0.38 [0.20-0.70](p = 0.002), ICU admission (0.31 [0.21-0.47](p < 0.001) and oxygen requirement (0.16 [0.10-0.26](p < 0.001), even among older patients or with comorbidities. Conclusions: Among patients hospitalised with a delta variant SARS-CoV-2 infection, vaccination was associated with less severe forms, even in the presence of comorbidities.

Abstract

International audience; AIM: Drug shortage is a growing global health issue. The aim of the study was to evaluate the consequences of drug shortages on patient safety based on data recorded in the French Pharmacovigilance Database. METHODS: All cases involving drug shortages reported from 1985 to the end of 2019 were extracted from the database. RESULTS: Following the selection process, 462 cases were included. The number of cases increased significantly from 2004 to 2019. Cases mainly involved drugs from the nervous system (22.1%, CI95[17.5;27.0]), the cardiovascular system (16.4%, CI95[11.9;21.4]), and anti-infectives for systemic use (14.3%, CI95[9.7;19.2]) ATC classes. Most of the cases reported an adverse drug reaction (ADR) belonging to the SOC nervous system (21%, CI95[18;24]), skin and subcutaneous (14%, CI95[11;17]), general (13%, CI95[10;17]), and gastrointestinal (8%, CI95[5;11]) disorders. Disease worsening was observed in 15.9% of the cases, mostly related to a lack of efficacy of the replacement drug. Half of the cases were considered as serious. Evolution was favourable in 79.4% of the cases. Death and/or life-threatening situations were reported in 5.8% of the cases. Medication errors (ME) were identified in 51 cases (11%), mostly occurring at the administration step and involving a human factor. CONCLUSION: This study emphasises the clinical impact of drug shortage in terms of ADRs, ME and inefficiency. These observations underline the importance of a global health policy programme to limit the occurrence of drug shortages and to reinforce the information provided to patients and health care professionals in this context to limit risk.

Abstract

International audience; Latest advancements in transparent ceramics development have ensured a mainstream research interest in this family of materials. Crystallization of glass into transparent ceramics has emerged recently as an alternative but complementary trajectory for obtaining transparent ceramics, which circumvents some of the long-standing technical difficulties associated with traditional transparent ceramics processing. The full bulk glass crystallization allows for the synthesis of high-density/low-porosity transparent ceramics of stable and metastable phases or even non-cubic structures, which are difficult to obtain using the traditional processing methods. This article presents a brief survey of the science of the transparency of ceramics and a detailed overview of the materials systems and techniques used for the preparation of transparent ceramics through the glass crystallization route. Finally, the review provides authors' insights into the future trends and research directions aimed to encourage a widespread application of glass crystallization into transparent ceramics in the fabrication of next-generation materials.

International audience; The first demonstration of a nanoscaled titanium zirconium nitride (TiZrN2) single-phase isolated during the preparation of polymer-derived silicon nitride (Si3N4) matrix nanocomposites is discussed. We employed a polysilazane, which was chemically modified with Zr[N(CH2CH3)2]4 and Ti[N(CH3)2]4 then ammonolyzed before a pyrolysis step under ammonia (1000 °C) and a heat-treatment in flowing nitrogen (1000–1700 °C). Based on a careful control of the precursor chemistry in the early stage of the process and nano-/microstructural investigations of the material performed during its preparation, we were able to identify TiZrN2 nanocrystals with a size as low as 9 nm distributed in α- and β-Si3N4 phases at a temperature as low as 1500 °C. We particularly proved that the TiZrN2 nanophase could be generated because of the use of the polysilazane evoluting towards a covalently-bonded Si3N4 matrix . This unique nanostructure is expected to provide particular functionality to Si3N4 as noble metal-free catalysts and components with high plasmonic quality.

Abstract

International audience; BackgroundCaregivers encounter difficulties differentiating fear and pain experienced by children and tend to interpret what children may feel, often resulting in inadequate pain management. While many pain self-assessment scales are available, there is no validated self-assessment fear scale for children.Methods: The aim of this prospective study was to validate, in children aged 4 to 12 years, the psychometric properties of our scale. In a first part, in a school setting, five exercises were given to 484 children in order to validate the expression of fear, grade the intensity of the faces, the ability to discriminate the faces and the equality of the intervals. The scale's reproducibility was studied by assessing the children's fear in everyday situations at two different time points.In a second part, in a hospital setting, the aim was to test the scale's feasibility. Sixty children admitted to one emergency care department self-assessed their fear with the Scary Scale.FindingsThe expression of fear was validated by 57.64% (p < 0.0001) of the children in comparison with three other emotions (pain, surprise, sadness).The 7–9 year-olds validated the other properties (gradation, discrimination, equality, reproducibility). The 4–6 year-olds failed to validate the gradation exercise, but succeeded with the others.In the hospital, 95% of children self-assessed their fear using the scale.DiscussionOur self-assessment fear scale was validated in children aged 7–12 years specifically and was readily feasible in the hospital. We recommend its use in that age group in every care situation triggering fear.Trial registration: clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT02675504.

Abstract

A broad version of the paper has been published in Thébaut C., L’évalua:on économique en santé au prisme de la typologie des épistémès de Foucault, Revue de philosophie économique, 2021/1 (Vol. 22), pages 129 à 157; Objective: We seek here to draw on the methods and tools put forward by Michel Foucault in The Order of the Things (1966) to shed light on history of welfare economics. More specifically we consider that the rejection of interpersonal comparisons that foreshadowed the marginalist revolution and the transition to ordinal measures of utility during the 19th century can be explained by the shift from the classical episteme to a modern episteme which is described by Foucault. Method: To explore this hypothesis, we drawn on the method of archaeological knowledge, proposed by Foucault (1966, 1969). We started by building a corpus using an incremental research strategy (the "snowball" method), starting from first bibliographic reference on history of welfare economics Baujard (2013, 2014). Then, we study the various statements within a corpus, in order to identify regularities and turning points both in semantics and concepts, so as to compare discourse "styles". Unlike other approaches in social sciences, the method of knowledge archaeology consists in analysing scientific discourses in themselves, outside the social, economic and political context that led them to emerge. Results: Using this methodology, we first examine to what extent the early utilitarianism is typical of the classical episteme as described by Foucault, which entails (i) the use of a mechanistic framework, (ii) the use of mathematics and more generally (iii) an effort to classify different entities. Second we examined how the rejection of interpersonal comparisons in the marginalist literature and the transition to ordinal utilities could be typical of the modern episteme, through the development of positivist stand and transcendental function of the notion of utility.; Cet article s’inscrit dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche visant à mobiliser les méthodes et outils proposés par Michel Foucault pour apporter un éclairage sur un ensemble de discussions que soulève l’évaluation économique en santé. Nous nous intéressons ici à l’ancrage épistémologique des méthodes de révélation des préférences individuelles issues de l’économie du bien-être, qui sont aujourd’hui utilisées pour valoriser les bénéfices en santé, en nous appuyant sur la typologie des épistémès de Foucault dans les Mots et les choses. Plus précisément, nous envisageons que le rejet des comparaisons interpersonnelles, que préfigure la révolution marginaliste et la transition vers une mesure ordinale des utilités, s’explique par le passage d’une épistémè classique à une épistémè moderne. La question du caractère cardinal ou ordinal de la mesure de l’utilité reste centrale pour l’évaluation économique en santé. Abstract

International audience; Geoconservation is a fairly recent matter in France in the wider scope of nature conservation, although its origins date back to the mid-nineteenth century with the first protected areas including sandstone block fields in the Fontainebleau forest. The recognition and protection of geoheritage are today integrated in French environmental policies, and specific legal and management tools have been created to conserve geological and geomorphological features. The aim of this paper is to propose a brief history of geoconservation in France and to present the recent national policies and current tools aiming to protect geoheritage. From a historical perspective, the role of artistic and scientific personalities as well as the influence of associations and learned societies (late nineteenth–early twentieth century) in the initiation of a geoconservation movement are underlined. However, the key policies and strategies favouring geoheritage protection in France come in the late twentieth–early twenty-first century. The 2002 Act on Local Democracy, which institutes the National Inventory of Geological Heritage and renews the legal framework of nature protection in France, is considered as a decisive step towards a comprehensive strategy fostering the conservation of geoheritage. Many key stakeholders are involved in the implementation of geoconservation strategies in the territories, from the national to the regional and local levels. As a result of the different environmental policies and strategies, a composite geoconservation toolbox is today available to protect the varied geoheritage of France. Among these tools, a special attention is paid to ex situ geoconservation in museums and scientific collections, and to educational activities within the French network of UNESCO Global Geoparks and other labelled territories. A discussion opens on the integration of the French geoheritage into different initiatives of international organisations, including the ongoing IUGS Global Geosites programme and the future IUCN initiative on Key Geoheritage Areas (KGA).

Cette communication vise à présenter et analyser les différentes formes de recherche participative à l’œuvre sur ces territoires, en s’interrogeant sur les contributions et les questionnements générés par ces dynamiques de recherche. Dans quelle mesure la recherche accompagne-t-elle des pratiques sociales émergentes ? Comment valoriser l’articulation des savoirs académiques et savoirs des acteurs et actrices de la vie sociale ? Comment concilier temps des chercheurs et chercheuses et des temps des acteurs et actrices ? Une instrumentalisation des 2 parties prenantes est-elle évitable ? Certaines recherches-actions s’inscrivent-elles dans l’enquête scientifique comme outil de démocratisation selon l’approche de John Dewey (Dewey, 1938 ; Bazzoli, Dutraive, 2005) ? Comment faciliter l’appropriation par les acteurs de terrain des résultats de recherche (Chevallier, Noûs, 2020) ? Cette appropriation peut-elle contribuer à renforcer le pouvoir d’agir des acteurs et actrices (Greenwood, Levin, 2006 ; Ballon et Bodet, 2017) ?Cette communication présente une analyse réflexive de nos pratiques de chercheurs et chercheuses et de leur réception par les acteurs et actrices de terrain. Nous nous centrons sur la « boite noire » de la recherche participative, les outils mobilisés, les façons de faire, sans les inscrire, pour le moment, dans un référentiel ou un cadre théorique bien défini. Puis, nous analysons le socle d’expérience commune à COOPEEC qui est l’entreprise coopérative jeunesse Métroloco (à Tarnos dans les Landes) où nous avons expérimenté de nouvelles manières de travailler ensemble.

Abstract

The connectivity of environmental compartments through chemical and biological exchanges is often difficult to study. However, understanding the functioning of fluxes is essential in the context of climate change and the assessment of anthropogenic impacts. These exchanges can be realized through water cycle fluxes establishing interactions between the atmosphere, surface water and land.To examine the interactions between the atmosphere, surface water and land via water fluxes, we conducted a large scale field study at the watershed level, involving multiple disciplines from chemistry to meteorology and microbiology. The chemical and biological contents of water from the atmosphere (cloud and rain), to mid-mountain hydrological continuum (streams, wetlands and lake) and soil (agricultural plots) were assessed in the natural and agricultural area from Puy De Dôme (Central France) along an altitudinal gradient from puy de Dôme Mountain summit (1465 m asl) to the plain (~ 600 m asl). We set up experimental procedures for sampling, handling and analysing each environmental matrix, and the environmental context was characterized through meteorological and hydrological measurements and models. The biological and chemical variables included: isotopes of water (1H/2H and 16O/18O; laser spectroscopy), major ions (Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl-, NO3-, SO4-, IC), amino acids (LC-MS), bacterial diversity (16S metabarcoding and high-throughput sequencing) and microbial enzymatic activity associated with the nitrogen, carbon and phosphorus cycles (fluorimetric activity assays for whole Beta-Glucosidase, Leucine Aminopeptidase and Phosphatase activities).The multi-compartment analysis revealed significant differences between the compartments by the chemical variables, highlighting the compartment specificity. We estimated a chemical flux of major ions and amino acids from the atmosphere to the surface (soil and surface water). Bacterial diversity analysis showed a core community in these compartments, confirming their connectivity. Thereafter, we tried to explain bacterial diversity by the chemical variables from the studied compartments. Our analysis on microbial enzymatic activity showed an enzymatic activity associated with the nitrogen, carbon and phosphorus cycles in clouds and rain.Here, our study contributes to the understanding of atmosphere-surface interaction through field observations and atmospheric models and we attempted to better understand environmental fluxes. Our field study emphasized the importance of considering the interaction of environmental compartments in future investigations for future and gobal assessments of anthropogenic impacts, such as agrosystem effects to natural ecosystems. Abstract

International audience; Introduction: Previous meta-analyses have linked social connections and mild cognitive impairment, dementia, and mortality. However, these used aggregate data from North America and Europe and examined a limited number of social connection markers. Methods: We used individual participant data (N = 39271, M age = 70.67 (40-102), 58.86% female, M education = 8.43 years, M follow-up = 3.22 years) from 13 longitudinal ageing studies. A two-stage meta-analysis of Cox regression models examined the association between social connection markers with our primary outcomes. Results: We found associations between good social connections structure and quality and lower risk of incident mild cognitive impairment (MCI); between social structure and function and lower risk of incident dementia and mortality. Only in Asian cohorts, being married/in a relationship was associated with reduced risk of dementia, and having a confidante was associated with reduced risk of dementia and mortality. Discussion: Different aspects of social connections-structure, function, and qualityare associated with benefits for healthy aging internationally.

Abstract

International audience; Assessing the relationship between grassland plant diversity and agronomic value is a major challenge to reconcile nature conservation and agricultural use of extensive grassland habitats. To do this, multiple facets of forage production must be considered such as the quantity produced and its nutritive value, commonly assessed through its digestibility, energy content, and nutrient content. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of plant diversity and functional traits on forage productivity and nutritive value in a wide set of semi-natural grassland habitats.Forage was sampled in 202 plots located across 68 permanent extensive grasslands in eight regions of France. Species and functional diversity indices, community-weighted means (CWM) of plant functional traits, and the relative cover of main plant functional types (PFT; graminoids, forbs, and legumes) were used to describe plant communities. Forage production was evaluated by recording early standing biomass (SB), and nutritive value parameters, namely digestibility (DMD), crude protein content (CP), and average mineral content (MinAv) at the beginning of the vegetation growing season.Species richness was negatively associated with SB and MinAv. Species evenness was positively correlated with CP, DMD, and MinAv, while PFT evenness was positively correlated with CP and DMD. Forage standing biomass increased with increasing graminoid cover and decreased with increasing forb cover. A higher legume cover and specific leaf area CWM as well as a lower leaf dry matter content CWM was associated with improved forage nutritive value and had no effect on SB. Our results highlight that a better forage nutritive value can be obtained with a higher plant species evenness in permanent grassland habitats. Furthermore, in grasslands with an even distribution of plant functional types, forage nutritive value may be improved with no loss in early standing biomass.

Abstract

International audience; Aim: The long-term urological sequelae after iatrogenic ureteral injury (IUI) during colorectal surgery are not clearly known. The aims of this work were to report the incidence of IUI and to analyse the long-term consequences of urological late complications and their impact on oncological results of IUI occurring during colorectal surgery through a French multicentric experience (GRECCAR group).Method: All the patients who presented with IUI during colorectal surgery between 2010 and 2019 were retrospectively included. Patients with ureteral involvement needing en bloc resection, delayed ureteral stricture or noncolorectal surgery were not considered.Results: A total of 202 patients (93 men, mean age 63 ± 14 years) were identified in 29 centres, corresponding to 0.32% of colorectal surgeries (n = 63 562). Index colorectal surgery was mainly oncological (n = 130, 64%). IUI was diagnosed postoperatively in 112 patients (55%) after a mean delay of 11 ± 9 days. Intraoperative diagnosis of IUI was significantly associated with shorter length of stay (21 ± 22 days vs. 34 ± 22 days, p < 0.0001), lower rates of postoperative hydronephrosis (2% vs. 10%, p = 0.04), anastomotic complication (7% vs. 22.5%, p = 0.002) and thromboembolic event (0% vs. 6%, p = 0.02) than postoperative diagnosis of IUI. Delayed chemotherapy because of IUI was reported in 27% of patients. At the end of the follow-up [3 ± 2.6 years (1 month-13 years)], 72 patients presented with urological sequalae (36%). Six patients (3%) required a nephrectomy.Conclusion: IUI during colorectal surgery has few consequences for the patients if recognized early. Long-term urological sequelae can occur in a third of patients. IUI may affect oncological outcomes in colorectal surgery by delaying adjuvant chemotherapy, especially when the ureteral injury is not diagnosed peroperatively.

Abstract

The Allier River, France, known for its very dynamic river sections in its lower course, was nevertheless subjected to human impacts. The present study aims to better explain the recent hydrogeomorphological channel changes of the middle Allier River considering morphostructural constraints, human impacts and flow regime since the second half of the 20th century. Channel changes are analyzed from six historical aerial photographs (1954, 1974, 1992, 2000, 2010 and 2016) and four longitudinal water surface profiles (1934/35, 1999, 2005 and 2020), based on descriptive statistical analyses and a Principal Component Analysis followed by a Hierarchical Cluster Analysis. The influence of morphostructural controls and human impacts are tested using a Correspondence Factor Analysis, whereas temporal trends of the flow regime are analyzed using Mann Kendall and Pettitt tests. Overall, results show that during the last sixty to eighty years the channel bed incised by 0.86 m, narrowed by 25% and that lateral mobility decreased by 68%. Four morphological evolutionary trajectories were identified for the alluvial plain sections, laterally more mobile than the naturally confined section. These evolutionary trajectories were caracterized by a more or less important presence of human impacts on the channel, such as gravel mining activities and, more locally, in-channel engineering works. Moreover, hydrological changes recorded at the end of the 20th century, characterized by a decrease of the frequency, the duration and the intensity of floods, has led to a general increase of annual abandoned surfaces and, conversely, to a decrease of annual eroded surfaces. In conclusion, future river management schemes will have to consider past and present human impacts on channel morphodynamics as well as current climate change and its consequences on the flow regime. La rivière Allier, France, connue pour ses sections très dynamiques dans son cours inférieur, a néanmoins été soumise à des impacts anthropiques. La présente étude, centrée sur son cours moyen, a pour objectif de comprendre les changements hydrogéomorphologiques récents de l'Allier moyen en relation avec les contraintes morphostructurales, les impacts anthropiques et le régime hydrologique depuis la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Les changements morphologiques sont analysés à partir de six orthophographies aériennes (1954, 1974, 1992, 2000, 2010 et 2016) et de quatre relevés de ligne d’eau (1934/35, 1999, 2005 et 2020). Des analyses statistiques descriptives et une analyse en composantes principales suivie d’une classification ascendante hiérarchique permettent de définir des types de trajectoires morphologiques. L’influence des contraintes morphostructurales et des impacts anthropiques est testée au moyen d’une analyse factorielle des correspondances et la tendance d’évolution du régime hydrologique par les tests statistiques de Mann Kendall et de Pettitt. Les résultats montrent qu’au cours des soixante à quatre-vingts dernières années, le lit s’est incisé de 0,86 m, s’est rétréci de 25% et que la mobilité latérale du chenal a diminué de 68%. Quatre trajectoires d'évolution morphologiques ont été identifiées pour les sections de plaines alluviales, plus mobiles latéralement que la section naturellement confinée. Ces trajectoires d’évolution ont été caractérisées par des impacts anthropiques d’intensité variable, parmi lesquels l’extraction de granulats et, plus localement, de travaux dans le chenal. De plus, le changement hydrologique enregistré à la fin du XXe siècle, caractérisé par une baisse de la fréquence, de la durée et de l'intensité des crues, a conduit à une augmentation généralisée des surfaces abandonnées annuellement et a contrario à une baisse des surfaces érodées annuellement. En conséquence, ces modifications hydrogéomorphologiques devront être prises en compte dans les futurs plans de gestion de la rivière.

Abstract

International audience; What can crime stories tell us about the imaginary of political commitment? In France as in other European countries, the connections between writers and radical left activists were a strong feature of 1980s and 1990s crime fiction, in the wake of French néo-polar . In contrast, twenty-first-century thrillers seem to be inhabited by disillusioned and disoriented cops, and undecided or fatal commitments. Rather than exploring political issues emerging from crime fiction, this chapter focuses on the representation of political attitudes themselves in contemporary French Noir, to better understand the role played by uncertainty and disarray in European political sensibilities. The analysis is based on a large corpus of French crime fiction, from the early 1970s néo-polar by Jean-Patrick Manchette, to the novels of Caryl Férey, Dominique Manotti, Frédéric Paulin and Olivier Norek.

These silica-based tapers are intended to serve as a nonlinear gain medium for intense and high average power Fiber Optical Parametric Chirped Pulse Amplifier emitting at 2 $$\upmu \hbox {m}$$ μ m and strongly pumped at Yb wavelength. Different geometries (tapered/untapered, aspect ratio, etc.) are fabricated, analyzed and their broadening properties—key for supporting ultrashort pulses amplification—are compared and discussed. The characterization of nonlinear gain bandwidth of the tapers relies on a tunable source of stochastic pulses based on tunable amplified spontaneous emission in Yb-doped amplifiers. The strong overshoots of this source allows degenerate four-wave mixing process to occur thus generating broadband incoherent visible signal and mid-infrared idler waves at much lower average power than usually needed with coherent pumping. The idler centered around 1.85 $$\mu$$ μ m is broadened due to zero-dispersion wavelength shift along the taper.

Abstract

Ultrafast laser processing can induce surface nanostructurating (SNS) in most materials with dimensions close to the irradiation laser wavelength. In-situ SNS characterization could be key for laser parameter's fine-tuning, essential for the generation of complex and/or hybrid nanostructures. Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS) created in the ultraviolet (UV) range generate the most fascinating effects. They are however highly challenging to characterize in a non-destructive manner since their dimensions can be as small as 100 nm. Conventional optical imaging methods are indeed limited by diffraction to a resolution of ≈ 150 nm. Although optical super-resolution techniques can go beyond the diffraction limit, which in theory allows the visualization of LIPSS, most super-resolution methods require the presence of small probes (such as fluorophores) which modifies the sample and is usually incompatible with a direct surface inspection. In this paper, we demonstrate that a modified label-free Confocal Reflectance Microscope (CRM) in a photon reassignment regime (also called re-scan microscopy) can detect sub-diffraction limit LIPSS. SNS generated on a titanium sample irradiated with a λ =257 nm femtosecond UV-laser were characterized with nanostructuring period ranging from 105 nm to 172 nm. Our label-free, non-destructive optical surface inspection was done at 180µm²/s, and the results are compared with commercial SEM showing the metrological efficiency of our approach., L'interaction entre un laser ultrarapide et une objet peut induire une nanostructuration de surface (NSS) dans la plupart des matériaux, avec des dimensions proches de la longueur d'onde du laser d'irradiation. La caractérisation de NSS in-situ pourrait être la clé permettant un réglage fin des paramètres lasers, essentiel pour la génération de nanostructures complexes et/ou hybrides. Les structures de surface périodiques induites par laser (LIPSS) générées par une illumination ultraviolette (UV) génèrent les effets les plus fascinants. Ils sont cependant très difficiles à caractériser de manière non destructive puisque leurs dimensions descendre à 100 nm. Les méthodes d'imagerie optique classiques sont en effet limitées par la diffraction à une résolution de ≈ 150 nm. Bien que les techniques de super-résolution optique puissent aller au-delà de la limite de diffraction, ce qui permet en théorie la visualisation de LIPSS, la plupart des méthodes de super-résolution nécessitent la présence de petites sondes (comme des fluorophores) qui modifient l'échantillon et sont généralement incompatibles avec une imagerie directe des surfaces. Dans cet article, nous démontrons qu'un microscope confocale en réflectance sans marquage (CRM) dans un régime de réallocation de photons (également appelé microscopie de re-scan) peut détecter des LIPSS spis la limite de diffraction. Les NSS générées sur un échantillon de titane irradié avec un laser UV femtoseconde λ = 257 nm ont été caractérisés avec une période de nanostructuration allant de 105 nm à 172 nm. Notre inspection de surface optique sans marquage et non destructive a été effectuée à 180 µm²/s, et les résultats sont comparés avec un MEB commercial montrant l'efficacité métrologique de notre approche.

Abstract

This paper examines whether environmental and social (ES) activities affect the resiliency of firms during the COVID-19 crisis. We study a sample of 330 firms operating in five developed countries: Canada, France, Japan, the UK and the US. Our analysis shows that US firms with a high ES ranking experienced a significantly lower stock price range volatility during the Covid stock market rundown of February-March 2020. Such findings also hold for Japanese firms but only later on after the introduction of government support. In terms of returns, compared to their peers with a low ES ranking, Japanese and UK stock prices with a high ES ranking suffered more during and after the market rundown. For other countries, we do not find significant differences in stock price behavior based on ES ratings. Our findings suggest that engaging with ES activities is not associated with a better or worse performance during crisis times, which has important implications for investors and managers. Para isso, analisamos a cobertura da candidatura de Jair Bolsonaro nos veículos on-line G1 e UOL nas eleições presidenciais brasileiras de 2018. Mostramos como a polêmica foi a estratégia argumentativa usada por este ator populista para fins de controle midiático. Nosso corpus de trabalho compreende o conteúdo das notícias dos dois principais portais de notícias brasileiros, no período entre 07 de setembro de 2018 e 07 de outubro de 2018, mês que antecede o primeiro turno dessas eleições. Este trabalho é feito sob um ponto de vista interdisciplinar, aliando as Ciências da informação e da comunicação e as Ciências da linguagem.

International audience; The 3' regulatory region (3'RR) located downstream from the Cα gene is the conductor of transcription, accessibility, and remodeling of the IgH locus at mature B-cell stages. Convincing demonstrations of the essential contributions of the 3'RR in B-cell lymphomagenesis have been provided by mouse models which bring the oncogene c-Myc under the 3'RR transcriptional control. In this study, we developed a mouse model of CD138+ plasma B-cell lymphomas. If the KI of c-myc directly into Cα just 5' to the 3'RR in iMycCα mice produced B-cell lymphomas with low kinetics, we enforced c-myc production in iMycCα mice by the generation of homozygous c-myc transgenic mice. Our results show that homozygous iMycCα mice lead to a mouse model of plasma CD138+ B-cell lymphomas with interesting and wide transcriptomic similarities to human multiple myeloma and appropriated emergence kinetics that can be used to test new experimental therapeutic approaches.

Abstract

International audience; PURPOSE: Severely ill patients affected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) develop circulatory failure. We aimed to report patterns of left and right ventricular dysfunction in the first echocardiography following admission to intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: Retrospective, descriptive study that collected echocardiographic and clinical information from severely ill COVID-19 patients admitted to 14 ICUs in 8 countries. Patients admitted to ICU who received at least one echocardiography between 1st February 2020 and 30th June 2021 were included. Clinical and echocardiographic data were uploaded using a secured web-based electronic database (REDCap). RESULTS: Six hundred and seventy-seven patients were included and the first echo was performed 2 [1, 4] days after ICU admission. The median age was 65 [56, 73] years, and 71% were male. Left ventricle (LV) and/or right ventricle (RV) systolic dysfunction were found in 234 (34.5%) patients. 149 (22%) patients had LV systolic dysfunction (with or without RV dysfunction) without LV dilatation and no elevation in filling pressure. 152 (22.5%) had RV systolic dysfunction. In 517 patients with information on both paradoxical septal motion and quantitative RV size, 90 (17.4%) had acute cor pulmonale (ACP). ACP was associated with mechanical ventilation (OR\,>\,4), pulmonary embolism (OR\,>\,5) and increased PaCO(2). Exploratory analyses showed that patients with ACP and older age were more likely to die in hospital (including ICU). CONCLUSION: Almost one-third of this cohort of critically ill COVID-19 patients exhibited abnormal LV and/or RV systolic function in their first echocardiography assessment. While LV systolic dysfunction appears similar to septic cardiomyopathy, RV systolic dysfunction was related to pressure overload due to positive pressure ventilation, hypercapnia and pulmonary embolism. ACP and age seemed to be associated with mortality in this cohort.

Abstract

International audience; One of the major current ecological challenges is to understand how to reconcile human activities with biodiversity conservation concerns. This issue is particularly relevant in freshwater ecosystems where biodiversity is globally under severe threat. Artificial waterbodies, such as ditch networks, are part of the few remaining wetlands in agricultural landscapes and hence play a crucial role in maintaining aquatic biodiversity in these landscapes. We investigated the responses of adult Odonata assemblages at different spatial scales in a marshland crossed by ditches to two factors expected to be pivotal influences on assemblages. At the local scale, this was mainly the water regime in ditches and, at a broader scale, the composition of the landscape. Both taxonomic alpha and beta diversity, and functional trait composition were considered as response variables. Significant differences were found between the responses of the two Odonata suborders. We showed that Zygoptera species richness decreased and species turnover increased with the duration of drying episodes in ditches. Geographical distances between local assemblages as well as landscape characteristics, notably woodland cover, meadow cover and ditch network length, also significantly shaped the distribution of Zygoptera. For Anisoptera, species richness was not explained by environmental variables and beta diversity was associated only with local conditions; it increased with increasing dissimilarity in water quality and riparian vegetation. We also found evidence of functional trait syndromes (combinations of correlated traits) in Odonata assemblages, but without clear relationships to environmental gradients. This study reveals the structuring role of water regime for Odonata in ditch networks and demonstrates the need to jointly consider environmental variables at different spatial scales to properly understand the distribution of Odonata. Our findings have important conservation implications as the water regime is heavily managed in such ecosystems. Even though the relationship between functional composition and environmental gradients was found to be of limited extent in this study, we discuss how it might provide new insights for Odonata assemblage structure and be useful, locally, for stakeholders and managers. Lastly, we call for further multiscale investigations considering both the taxonomic and functional responses of Odonata assemblages (functional analyses with multiple traits and several species being scarce in this taxonomic group) in other anthropogenic freshwater ecosystems to gather more lessons for their conservation.

Abstract

Microorganisms play a role in the construction or modulation of various types of landforms. They are especially notable for forming microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS). Such microbial structures have been considered to be among the most likely biosignatures that might be encountered on the martian surface. Twenty-nine algorithms have been tested with images taken during a laboratory experiment for testing their performance in discriminating mat cracks (MISS) from abiotic mud cracks. Among the algorithms, neural network types produced excellent predictions with similar precision of 0.99. Following that step, a convolutional neural network (CNN) approach has been tested to see whether it can conclusively detect MISS in images of rocks and sediment surfaces taken at different natural sites where present and ancient (fossil) microbial mat cracks and abiotic desiccation cracks were observed. The CNN approach showed excellent prediction of biotic and abiotic structures from the images (global precision, sensitivity, and specificity, respectively, 0.99, 0.99, and 0.97). The key areas of interest of the machine matched well with human expertise for distinguishing biotic and abiotic forms (in their geomorphological meaning). The images indicated clear differences between the abiotic and biotic situations expressed at three embedded scales: texture (size, shape, and arrangement of the grains constituting the surface of one form), form (outer shape of one form), and pattern of form arrangement (arrangement of the forms over a few square meters). The most discriminative components for biogenicity were the border of the mat cracks with their tortuous enlarged and blistered morphology more or less curved upward, sometimes with thin laminations. To apply this innovative biogeomorphological approach to the images obtained by rovers on Mars, the main physical and biological sources of variation in abiotic and biotic outcomes must now be further considered.

Abstract

[EN] Poplars establish on alluvial bars within sand and gravel-bed rivers. Alluvial bars also provide particularly suitable habitats for the proliferation of ants. We hypothesized that ants, by modifying substrate structure and resource availability in fluvial habitats, positively influence poplar growth during its establishment stage. We conducted a preliminary nine-month ex situ greenhouse experiment with one ant species (Lasius niger L.) and six different genotypes of poplar cuttings (Populus nigra L.), both collected on the Garonne River, SW France. Three main treatments: `P. nigra alone¿, `P. nigra without ants and with ant food¿ and `P. nigra with ants and ant food¿ were applied. After one growing season, we tested differences in branching length and biomass of stems, roots and leaves. Certain genotypes showed significant differences in growth, but there were no significant differences in stem length, dry mass of stems and roots between the three treatments. The total biomass of poplars after the first growing season was positively affected by the initial size of the cuttings and was modulated by the genotype independently from the treatments. However, an increased poplar growth for the treatment without ants and with ant food was observed according to significant differences in dry weight of leaves and total biomass (i.e. dry mass of stems, roots and leaves) for the pooled genotypes across treatments. Abstract

International audience; Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) infects 95% of the world’s population and persists latently in the body. It immortalizes B-cells and is associated with lymphomas. LCLs (lymphoblastoid cell lines, EBV latency III B-cells) inhibit anti-tumoral T-cell response following PD-L1 overexpression (programmed death-ligand 1 immune checkpoint). Many cancer cells, including some DLBCLs (diffuse large B-cell lymphomas), also overexpress PD-L1. Immunotherapies are based on inhibition of PD-L1/PD-1 interactions but present some dose-dependent toxicities. We aim to find new strategies to improve their efficiency by decreasing PD-L1 expression. Fucoidan, a polysaccharide extracted from brown seaweed, exhibits immunomodulatory and anti-tumor activities depending on its polymerization degree, but data are scarce on lymphoma cells or immune checkpoints. LCLs and DLBCLs cells were treated with native fucoidan (Fucus vesiculosus) or original very-low-molecular-weight fucoidan formulas (vLMW-F). We observed cell proliferation decrease and apoptosis induction increase with vLMW-F and no toxicity on normal B- and T-cells. We highlighted a decrease in transcriptional and PD-L1 surface expression, even more efficient for vLMW than native fucoidan. This can be explained by actin network alteration, suggesting lower fusion of secretory vesicles carrying PD-L1 with the plasma membrane. We propose vLMW-F as potential adjuvants to immunotherapy due to their anti-proliferative and proapoptotic effects and ability to decrease PD-L1 membrane expression.

Abstract

International audience; Springs are abundant and present worldwide and are among the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the biodiversity of seventy-nine (79) mineral saline springs situated in the French Massif Central, focusing on the species richness and the estimated richness and also on the diatom community composition. The influence of physical and chemical factors on both richness and communities was analyzed in order to have a better knowledge of the diatom ecological preferences and identify species typical of saline springs. Since December 2014, an on-going inventory of mineral springs has been in progress. For each spring, physical and chemical characteristics were measured, and benthic diatoms were sampled. The richness was the lowest in the springs presenting a man-made construction around the emergence. In the other springs, the highest richness was associated with the lowest lithium, sodium, total dissolved solid concentrations, and conductivity. Mineralization and some ions (bromine, calcium, chloride, fluoride, lithium, potassium, and sodium) were found to be the most critical drivers of diatom community composition. Some diatom species were typical of specific abiotic conditions, such as Navicula sanctamargaritae, which was associated with the highest potassium concentration. These species could appear as bio-indicators of these conditions.

Abstract

The broad host range IncC plasmid family and the integrative mobilizable Salmonella Genomic Island 1 (SGI1) and its derivatives enable the spread of medically-important antibiotic resistance genes among Gram-negative pathogens. Although several aspects of the complex functional interactions between IncC plasmids and SGI1 have been recently deciphered regarding their conjugative transfer and incompatibility, the biological signal resulting in the hijacking of the conjugative plasmid by the integrative mobilizable element remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the conjugative entry of IncC/IncA plasmids is detected at an early stage by SGI1 through the transient activation of the SOS response, which induces the expression of the SGI1 master activators SgaDC, shown to play a crucial role in the complex biology between SGI1 and IncC plasmids. Besides, we developed an original tripartite conjugation approach to directly monitor SGI1 mobilization in a time-dependent manner following conjugative entry of IncC plasmids. Finally, we propose an updated biological model of the conjugative mobilization of the chromosomal resistance element SGI1 by IncC plasmids.IMPORTANCEAntimicrobial resistance has become a major public health issue, particularly with the increase in multidrug resistance (MDR) in both animal and human pathogenic bacteria, and with the emergence of resistance to medically important antibiotics. The spread between bacteria of successful mobile genetic elements such as conjugative plasmids and integrative elements conferring multidrug resistance is the main driving force in the dissemination of acquired antibiotic resistances among Gram-negative bacteria. Broad-host range IncC plasmids and their integrative mobilizable SGI1 counterparts contribute to the spread of critically-important resistance genes (e.g., ESBLs, and carbapenemases). A better knowledge of the complex biology of these broad-host range mobile elements will help to understand the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes that occurred across γ-proteobacteria borders.
