Abstract: International audience; We readdress the nature and creation mechanism of the defects absorbing at 4.7 eV in Swift Heavy Ion (SHI)-irradiated AlN semiconductor. Irradiations are performed in different controlled atmospheres (vacuum, oxygen, helium or argon partial pressure) to investigate the coupled effects of (i) the synergy between electronic excitations (Se) and nuclear collisions (Sn) for point defect creation and (ii) SHI-induced impurity introduction/diffusion into the AlN layer. We found that the synergy, previously reported, between Se and Sn for defect formation must also be related to the presence of oxygen during irradiation. At the same Se, the synergy parameter is indeed increased by up to two orders of magnitude during irradiation under O2 compared to irradiation under vacuum. By SHI irradiation and by a fine-tuning of the irradiation atmosphere, we then control the activation or inhibition of these light-emitted point defects (oxygen-vacancy complexes) which can be used as qubits for applications in quantum computing.

Abstract: International audience; The use of chitosan as a support in the field of catalysis has gained tremendous interest because of its abundance and sustainability. We herein disclose a straightforward strategy to trap and stabilize bismuth nanoparticles (BiNPs) on chitosan biopolymer Bi@CS and their use for catalytic applications. Bi@CS was configured as micrometer-thick films, porous beads, and native powders analyzed and next used for the controlled and selective reduction of nitroaromatic compounds to their corresponding anilines and azoarenes, respectively, by varying the concentration medium in reducing NaBH 4. A regioselective mechanism has been suggested. Powder nanocomposites CSp-BiNPs exhibited high catalytic capacity, and 10 corresponding anilines and 15 azoarenes were obtained with very high yields. The reductions were achieved under mild and sustainable reaction conditions (water solvent and room temperature) with easy processing and 12 recovery cycles. Shaped catalysts were easily recovered by simple filtration. This catalyst, derived from nontoxic and affordable bismuth metal supported on chitosan ocean waste, presents significant improvements in the realm of sustainable chemistry and could open a new channel of possibilities for green catalysis.

Abstract: Artículo escrito por un elevado número de autores, solo se referencian el que aparece en primer lugar, los autores pertenecientes a la UAM y el nombre del grupo de colaboración, si lo hubiere, We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of an implantable neural interface based on anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) magnetic-field sensors that combine reduced size and high performance at body temperature. The sensors are based on La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) as a ferromagnetic material, whose epitaxial growth has been suitably engineered to get uniaxial anisotropy and large AMR output together with low noise even at low frequencies. The performance of LSMO sensors of different film thickness and at different temperatures close to 37 °C has to be explored to find an optimum sensitivity of ∼400%/T (with typical detectivity values of 2 nT·Hz-1/2 at a frequency of 1 Hz and 0.3 nT·Hz-1/2 at 1 kHz), fitted for the detection of low magnetic signals coming from neural activity. Biocompatibility tests of devices consisting of submillimeter-size LSMO sensors coated by a thin poly(dimethyl siloxane) polymeric layer, both in vitro and in vivo, support their high suitability as implantable detectors of low-frequency biological magnetic signals emerging from heterogeneous electrically active tissues

Abstract: By collecting simultaneously optical and chemical/morphological data from nanoscale volumes, the Photonic Atom Probe (PAP) can be applied not only to the study of the relationship between optical and structural properties of quantum emitter but also to evaluate the influence of other factors, such as the presence of point defects, on the photoluminescence. Through the analysis of multiple layers of InGaN/GaN quantum dots (QDs), grown so that the density of structural defects is higher with increasing distance from the substrate, we establish that the light emission is higher in the regions exhibiting a higher presence of structural defects. While the presence of intrinsic point defects with non-radiative recombination properties remains elusive, our result is consistent with the fact that QD layers closer to the substrate behave as traps for non-radiative point defects. This result demonstrates the potential of the PAP as a technique for the study of the optical properties of defects in semiconductors.

Abstract: International audience; Although the metal-based catalyzed cyanomethylation of aldehydes is well-developed, a similar approach to ketones with acetonitrile derivatives remains a challenge. Thanks to Tolman type complexes, NiIIcomplexes with a pyridine(dicarboxamide) pincer ligand, analternative metal-catalyzed (1-5 mol% catalyst) cyanomethylation of an array of isatins and activated ketones is reported at room temperature. High isolated yields (up to 99%) were obtained not only with the poorly acidic acetonitrile but also with more challenging substituted alkyl cyanide nucleophiles. The in situ generated putative ion paired catalysts [NiCR2CN]-Cat+ likely benefit from the cation part (Cs+ or n-Bu4N+) to facilitate their formation and catalytic activity

Abstract: International audience; Developing alternatives to platinum (Pt) and iridium (Ir) in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers is crucial on the way to viable energy provision schemes. However, although it seems difficult to substitute Ir, alternatives exist for Pt at the PEMWE cathode. Here, we report on the synthesis and the characterization of efficient and durable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) nanocatalysts based on MoS2 supported on high surface area carbon. Citric acid was used as a chelating agent to control the size of the crystallites (1.4 nm) and thus the density of active sites (slab edges). Inspired by successful approaches in catalysis for hydrodesulfurization reactions, conventional 2H MoS2 was sequentially doped with cobalt (Co) then 1 wt. % of Pt. Overpotentials of 188 mV, 140 and 118 mV at 10 mA cm-2 are reported for MoS2/C, Co-MoS2/C and Pt1%-CoMoS2/C, respectively. This result is attributed to the weakening of Hads binding energy of the promoted MoS2 edge active sites (because the promoting atoms are mostly located at the edges). Associated with small metal dissolution rates (monitored in situ, during HER), our findingsdemonstrate that metal promotion (doping) is a promising route to replace platinum by earth-abundant elements in acidic water electrolyzers.

Abstract: Practical implementations of advanced lattice-based constructions have received much attention since the first practical scheme instantiated over NTRU lattices, proposed by Prest et al (Asiacrypt 2014). They are using powerful lattice-based building blocks which allow to build Gaussian preimage sampling and trapdoor generation efficiently. In this paper, we propose two different constructions and implementations of identity-based encryption schemes (IBE) using approximate variants of "gadget-based" trapdoors introduced by Chen et al. (Asiacrypt 2019). Both constructions are proven secure. Our first IBE scheme is an adaptation of the Bert et al. scheme (PQCrypto 2021) to the approximate setting, relying on the Module-LWE hardness assumption and making use of the Micciancio-Peikert paradigm with approximate trapdoors. The second IBE relies on a variant of the NTRU hardness assumption. We provide several timings and a comparison analysis to explain our results. The two different instantiations give interesting trade-offs in terms of security and efficiency and both benefit from the use of approximate trapdoors. Though our second IBE construction is less efficient than other NTRU-based IBEs, we believe our work provides useful insights into efficient advanced lattice-based constructions.

Abstract: The coordinating role of nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in cellular function is undeniable. Evidence indicates that this transcription factor exerts massive regulatory functions in multiple signaling pathways concerning redox homeostasis and xenobiotics, macromolecules, and iron metabolism. Being the master regulator of antioxidant system, Nrf2 controls cellular fate, influencing cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, resistance to therapy, and senescence processes, as well as infection disease success. Because Nrf2 is the key coordinator of cell defence mechanisms, dysregulation of its signaling has been associated with carcinogenic phenomena and infectious and age-related diseases. Deregulation of this cytoprotective system may also interfere with immune response. Oxidative burst, one of the main microbicidal mechanisms, could be impaired during the initial phagocytosis of pathogens, which could lead to the successful establishment of infection and promote susceptibility to infectious diseases. There is still a knowledge gap to fill regarding the molecular mechanisms by which Nrf2 orchestrates such complex networks involving multiple pathways. This review describes the role of Nrf2 in non-pathogenic and pathogenic cells.

Abstract: International audience; Codoped (Tb,Eu) ZnO films grown by magnetron sputtering on a silicon substrate and annealed up to 1200 °C showed intense photoluminescence (PL) emission from Eu3+ ions. The high-temperature annealing led to diffusion and segregation of rare earth (RE) elements toward the bottom of the film, which induced the formation of nanometric Zn-free inclusions responsible for remarkable PL emission intensity. Combined electron diffraction, chemical contrast imaging, and optical studies of these nanometric phases have been carried out. Large inclusions of zinc silicates and RE silicates a few hundreds of nanometers in size were observed, embedded in a silica phase. The structural determination of these RE-rich inclusions was carried out by combining atomic Z contrast imaging (high-angle annular dark-field imaging) and precession electron diffraction data. Upon annealing at 1200 °C, it appeared that the structure was related to an F-type disilicate structure. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy experiments were carried out to determine the ratios between elements and the oxidation states of the RE elements in the abovementioned inclusions. A (Tb,Eu)2Si2O7 formulation is proposed from dynamical precession electron diffraction tomography refinements, leading to a +III valence state for the RE species in agreement with spectroscopic results. PL modeling is also in good agreement with the experimental data. These results complete those obtained at 1100 °C for which the inclusions were identified as some RE10–x(SiO4)6O2–x oxyapatite structures and pointed out a combined structural and PL properties’ evolution between 1100 and 1200 °C annealing temperatures.

Risk factors for discharge from an AGU to post-acute care (PAC) have not previously been investigated in detail.Methods: The objective is to identify risk factors for PAC transfer. The DAMAGE (prospective multicenter cohort) consecutively included more than 3500 subjects aged 75 or older and admitted to an AGU. The patients underwent a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) during their stay in the AGU. Only community-dwelling patients admitted to the AGU from the emergency department were included in the analysis. We recorded the characteristics of the care pathway and identified risk factors for discharge to home or to a PAC facility.Results: 1928 patients were included. Loss of functional independence (a decrease in the Katz activities of daily living (ADL) score between 1 month prior to admission and AGU admission), living alone, social isolation, a high Katz ADL score at home, a low Katz ADL on admission, and delirium on admission were risk factors for transfer to PAC. Obesity, an elevated serum albumin level, and community-acquired infection were associated with discharge to home. Neither sex nor age was a risk factor for home discharge or transfer to PAC.Conclusion: The present results might help clinicians and discharge planning teams to identify patients at risk of transfer to PAC more reliably and promptly in AGUs.Keywords: care transitions, health services, rehabilitation, risk factors, acute geriatric unit

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this article is to detect electron traps in AlInN/GaN transistors operating at room temperature by combining pulsed electrical measurement with photoionization techniques to rapidly assess their activation energies and time constants. In addition, this technique can also reveal the presence of electron traps that cannot be observed by using pulsed measurements alone. Thus, two electron traps were identified including a deep level whose origin could be related to dislocations in the GaN buffer existing in the devices. At the same time, this study has shown that the time constants of these electron traps are inferior to 400 ns and that the electrical behavior of the components is also degraded by the presence of surface states with a time constant of 4 μ s. Moreover, these two traps are at the origin of the gate lag effects observed during the pulsed electrical characterization of the AlInN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs). Likewise, a negative output conductance induced by a trapping effect has been put forward.

Abstract: International audience; Like in many countries, the French health authorities are pinning their hopes on vaccination to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this requires the public to get the vaccine. Based on six COCONEL surveys carried out during and after the lockdown among the general French adult population, which aimed to explore life conditions during this period and individual perceptions of the situation, this paper aims to investigate the acceptability of a putative vaccine against COVID-19 among the French population, and more specifically to compare attitudes among the elderly, who are more vulnerable to the disease, with those of younger people. Out of the 8,036 respondents, 27.5% declared that they would refuse the vaccine if it were available. Among the age groups of particular interest, 29.2% of people aged 18–64 said they would refuse the vaccine, compared to 12.4% of respondents aged 65 or over. For both groups, this refusal rate fluctuated depending on the date of the survey, gender, household composition, level of household income, and uptake of the last flu vaccine. In conclusion, more attention should be paid to elderly people, as they were more likely to report hostility toward vaccination in general. Finally, considering that several vaccines are now available, further studies should be done to study vaccine uptake in relation to the vaccine offered.; La campagne vaccinale contre la COVID-19 est une priorité sanitaire. Toutefois, l’adhésion de la population française à cette vaccination est un élément clé de sa réussite. À la lumière de six enquêtes COCONEL réalisées en population générale adulte pendant et après le confinement dans l’objectif de documenter les conditions de vie des Français pendant cette période ainsi que leur perception des mesures mises en place par les autorités, cet article propose d’analyser l’intention de se faire vacciner des Français à l’égard d’une vaccination contre la COVID-19, selon l’âge. Plus spécifiquement, l’intention des personnes âgées de 65 ans et plus, particulièrement vulnérables face à cette maladie, comparativement aux personnes plus jeunes. Parmi les 8 036 répondants, 27,5 % refuseraient ce vaccin s’il était disponible ; 29,2 % des 18-64 ans contre 12,4 % des 65 ans et plus. Quel que soit l’âge, ce refus de vaccination varie selon la date d’enquête, mais aussi selon le genre, la composition du foyer, le niveau de revenus, ainsi que la pratique vaccinale antérieure contre la grippe saisonnière. En conclusion, une attention particulière devra être portée aux personnes âgées de 65 ans et plus qui sont plus enclines à manifester une hostilité à la vaccination en général. Enfin, la mise sur le marché de différents vaccins devrait encourager à poursuivre les analyses de l’adhésion vaccinale au regard du vaccin proposé.

Abstract: Using localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) as an optical probe we demonstrate the presence of free carriers in phosphorus doped silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) embedded in a silica matrix. In small SiNCs, with radius ranging from 2.6 to 5.5 nm, the infrared spectroscopy study coupled to numerical simulations allows us to determine the number of electrically active phosphorus atoms with a precision of a few atoms. We demonstrate that LSP resonances can be supported with only about 10 free electrons per nanocrystal, confirming theoretical predictions and probing the limit of the collective nature of plasmons. We reveal the appearance of an avoided crossing behavior linked to the hybridization between the localized surface plasmon in the doped nanocrystals and the silica matrix phonon modes. Finally, a careful analysis of the scattering time dependence versus carrier density in the small size regime allows us to detect the appearance of a new scattering process at high dopant concentration, which can be explained by P clustering inside the SiNCs.

Abstract: International audience; In many applications, selfish, dishonest or malicious agents may find an interest in manipulating others. While many works deal with designing robust systems or designing manipulative strategies, few works are interested in defining in a broad sense what is a manipulation and how we can reason with such a notion. In this article, based on a social science literature, we give at first a general definition of manipulation that can be applied in multi-agent systems. A manipulation is a deliberate effect of an agent (called a manipulator ) to instrumentalize another agent (called a victim), while making sure to conceal that effect. Secondly, we show how this definition is related with different fields in computer science where the conceptof manipulation is studied. Finally, we present a logical framework, called KBE, to express and reason about manipulations. Since manipulation relies on deliberate effects, KBE introduces a deliberate BIAT operator which abstracts deliberate consequences of actions. We prove that this logic is sound and complete and, we formally define manipulation. Furthermore, based on KBE, we express related notions such as coercion, persuasion, or deception and we show that these notions are different from manipulation.

The DNA of the bacterium Francisella halioticida, reported as pathogen of giant abalone (Haliotis gigantea) and Yesso scallop (Mizuhopecten yessoensis) has been detected recently in mussels from areas suffering mortalities. Isolation of this bacterium was attempted from individuals collected during mortality events. Identification was performed by16S rRNA gene sequencing, real-time specific PCR and MALDI-ToF using spectra produced from the strain 8472-13A isolated from diseased Yesso scallop in Canada. Five isolates were identified as F. halioticida by real-time specific PCR and 16S rRNA sequencing. MALDI-ToF allowed the direct identification of four isolates(FR22a,b,c,d) which had 100% identity on the 16S rRNA gene with the known strains. On the other hand, one isolate (FR21) was not recognized by MALDI-ToF and had 99.9% identity on the 16S rRNA gene. The FR22 isolates showed difficult growth and required media optimization, which was not the case with the FR21 isolate. For these reasons, it was hypothesized that two type strains are present on French coasts, named FR21 and FR22. The FR21 isolate was selected for phenotypic analysis (growth curve, biochemical characteristics, electron microscopy), phylogenetic analysis and an experimental challenge.This isolate showed distinct differences compared to published F. halioticida strains, both at phenotypic and genotypic levels. Experimental infections of adult mussels led to 36% mortalities in 23 days following intramuscular injection with 3 x 107 CFU while a lower dose (3 x 103 CFU) did not lead to significant mortalities. In the context of this study, the strain FR21 was not virulent towards adult mussels.

Abstract: Atom probe tomography (APT) is a powerful three-dimensional nanoanalyzing microscopy technique considered key in modern materials science. However, progress in the spatial reconstruction of APT data has been rather limited since the first implementation of the protocol proposed by Bas et al. in 1995. This paper proposes a simple semianalytical approach to reconstruct multilayered structures, i.e., two or more different compounds stacked perpendicular to the analysis direction. Using a field evaporation model, the general dynamic evolution of parameters involved in the reconstruction of this type of structure is estimated. Some experimental reconstructions of different structures through the implementation of this method that dynamically accommodates variations in the tomographic reconstruction parameters are presented. It is shown both experimentally and theoretically that the depth accuracy of reconstructed APT images is improved using this method. The method requires few parameters in order to be easily usable and substantially improves atom probe tomographic reconstructions of multilayered structures.

Abstract: International audience; Among the various alternatives to fossil energies, microalga-based fuels are promising solutions. Thanks to their ability to grow under harsh conditions and trap industrial exhaust gases, these microalgae can help reduce global warming effects. One efficient way to process this feedstock is to use hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) which leads to an intermediate bio-crude and a residual solid. This bio-crude can be further refined to produce usable biofuel by eliminating problematic heteroatoms such as nitrogen, oxygen, and metals. The residual solid, which can represent 50 % in mass is, however not useable nowadays. To valorize this insoluble fraction, the present work is focused on its molecular characterization and, in particular, on its metal content. Metals are particularly problematic for downstream processes when they are in an organic form such as porphyrins as they destroy catalysts. Identification and speciation of these metal organic species is thus needed. However, these analyses are challenging because of the high molecular diversity of these samples. Here, complementarity between electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and FTICR-MS, which is a state-of-the-art mass spectrometer, was used for the speciation of copper elements in the residual solid. A signal characteristic of a copper surrounded by four symmetric nitrogen atoms was observed in EPR, suggesting porphyrinic structures. The dynamic range of FTICR-MS broadband analyses was not sufficient to access the isotopic fine structure of the copper porphyrins. Continuous accumulation of selected ions analyses (CASI) was thus, performed to boost the dynamic range of the mass spectrometer in a narrower mass range allowed to confirm for the first time the presence of copper porphyrins in a residual solid of bio-crude. Different families of copper porphyrins were observed, and putative structures were proposed.

Abstract: International audience; Les examens paléopathologiques de sujets immatures se confrontent au caractère peu spécifique des modifications osseuses observables macroscopiquement. Afin d’aider à la caractérisation des pathologies des sujets immatures, le CRAHAM a mené de 2020 à 2022 le programme de recherche ANCESTOR en collaboration avec la plate-forme d’imagerie CYCERON, le centre de microscopie CMABio3, le laboratoire CRISMAT et en partenariat avec La Fabrique de patrimoines en Normandie. Cette recherche, financée par l’Union européenne dans le cadre du programme opérationnel FEDER/ FSE 2014-2020, avait pour objectif d’obtenir des protocoles fiables d’analyse de pathologies osseuses, de troubles de croissance et de pathologies carentielles des enfants entre 0 et 5 ans. Envisagé pour constituer une aide à une meilleure évaluation paléopathologique des populations normandes de l’Antiquité à la période moderne, ce programme a permis de constituer un référentiel ostéologique s’appuyant sur la complémentarité des examens macroscopiques, radiographiques, microtomographiques et histologiques. Par la mise en place d’un protocole descriptif standardisé, nous avons cherché à identifier le pouvoir prédictif de l’aspect de surface du périoste sur les aspects osseux visibles par radiographie, microtomographie et histologie. Pour cela, nous nous sommes appuyés sur un corpus de 39 individus décédés avant l’âge de 3 ans et inhumés dans des cimetières normands médiévaux et modernes. Les résultats montrent que les descriptions macroscopiques sont faiblement associées aux autres descriptions et que la combinaison de plusieurs méthodes d’analyse est indispensable pour établir un lien entre l’aspect de surface et les modifications tissulaires. Ces résultats permettront d’orienter les choix méthodologiques dans l’optique d’élaborer un modèle interprétatif logiciste de diagnostic utilisable par la communauté archéo-anthropologique pour l’identification de maladies ou de carences osseuses des sujets immatures.

Abstract: International audience; Two series of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBHV) and poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) with different amounts of hydroxyvalerate (HV) and hydroxyhexanoate (HHx) units are compared. The influence of chemical composition on the molecular mobility in quenched samples is discussed, as well as the consequences on the aptitude to crystallize and the microstructures developed during cold-crystallization. In both quenched PHBHV and PHBHHx, Tg decreases as the content of comonomer unit increases. The HHx units (propyl side-groups) are better molecular spacers and produce a stronger Tg shift as compared to the HV units (ethyl side-groups). Copolymerization has no striking effect on the width of the glass transition and the cooperativity length in quenched samples, but in cold-crystallized samples the glass transition is dramatically broadened. When the fully amorphous copolymers are heated from the glassy state to room temperature, crystallization occurs but is largely disrupted, suggesting that the molecular environment in the amorphous phase is significantly changed. The HHx units, which are excluded from the host crystals, delay and slow down the crystallization kinetics in a stronger way as compared to the HV units, which can partially co-crystallize. The obtained crystalline phases are prone to reorganization and the residual amorphous phases appear to have strong differences in composition and large density fluctuations. A practical consequence is that microstructures with different coupling between phases, and thus different properties and stability over time, can be obtained by controlling the nature and content of the comonomer units.

Abstract: A graph database is a digraph whose arcs are labeled with symbols from a fixed alphabet. A regular graph pattern (RGP) is a digraph whose edges are labeled with regular expressions over the alphabet. RGPs model navigational queries for graph databases called conjunctive regular path queries (CRPQs). A match of a CRPQ in the database is witnessed by a special navigational homomorphism of the corresponding RGP to the database. We study the complexity of deciding the existence of a homomorphism between two RGPs. Such homomorphisms model a strong type of containment between the two corresponding CRPQs. We show that this problem can be solved by an EXPTIME algorithm (while general query containmement in this context is EXPSPACE-complete). We also study the problem for restricted RGPs over a unary alphabet, that arise from some applications like XPath or SPARQL. For this case, homomorphism-based CRPQ containment is in NP. Abstract: International audience; We follow the assumption that the dilatational response of glassy polymers can be characterized by a back-stress type analog that includes a thermal expansion for each elastic component and with a viscosity that is dependent on the expansion of the elastic back-stress component. To this, we add the assumption of an unloaded equilibrium temperature that correlates to the past processing through the viscous flow. After setting this in a thermodynamically consistent structure, elastic, elastic back-stress, thermal expansion, back-stress thermal expansion, heat capacity, and viscous damping are evaluated using existing experiments for the response of polycarbonate over the glassy and rubbery ranges. For the demonstration, this is done entirely using a WLF shift factor that is augmented to include, in addition, back strain superposition. We then examine the resulting model under different thermal and mechanical loadings that have the material passing through the glass transition.

Abstract: International audience; Plasmonic hyperdoped Si nanocrystals embedded in silica synthesized via a combination of sequential low energy ion implantation and rapid thermal annealing. We show that phosphorus dopants are incorporated into the nanocrystal cores at concentrations up to six times higher than P solid solubility in bulk Si by combining 3D mapping with atom probe tomography and analytical transmission electron microscopy. We shed light on the origin of nanocrystal growth at high P doses, which we attribute to Si recoiling atoms generated in the matrix by P implantation, which likely increase Si diffusivity and feed the Si nanocrystals. We show that dopant activation enables partial nanocrystal surface passivation that can be completed by forming gas annealing. Such surface passivation is a critical step in the formation of plasmon resonance, especially for small nanocrystals. We find that the activation rate in these small doped Si nanocrystals is the same as in bulk Si under the same doping conditions.

Abstract: International audience; The dislocation configurations of a Ti2AlC-MAX phase deformed under severe plastic deformation by surface mechanical attrition treatment have been analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. Results show that the microstructure of the deformed Ti2AlC sample is composed of numerous 〈a〉-dislocations, which interact with each other notably with dipolar configurations. In addition, we report here 〈a〉-dislocation dissociations in the basal plane with a dissociation distance of approximately 20 nm, following the reaction 1/3 〈21 ̅1 ̅0〉⇔1/3 〈11 ̅00〉+1/3 〈101 ̅0〉. Finally, strong evidence of zonal dislocations is reported. These original results are discussed in the context of the fundamental deformation mechanisms of nanolayered ternary alloys.

Abstract: International audience; Near-surface axial tensile residual stresses (from manufacturing) are reportedly detrimental to the yield strength of cold-drawn wires. Therefore, a reliable evaluation of their magnitude is necessary. The size and geometry of electrical wires can pose challenges for experimental measurement of those residual stresses. For that reason, the finite element analysis can prove useful. However, great care must be taken with the right choice of strain hardening law for a sound assessment of residual stresses. Given the complex loading condition during cold drawing, cyclic loading arises through the wire cross section even in single-pass drawing. As a result, it is of crucial importance to account for associated backstresses. The current study makes a comparison between two different hardening laws’ prediction of axial residual stress profiles in numerically cold-drawn Cu–Al composite wires of various Al volume fractions. The impact of die geometry on this prediction was also examined for a 25%Al-wire. To that end, a combined isotropic-kinematic law and a pure isotropic constitutive equation were considered. The results imply a possible overestimation of residual stresses by the pure isotropic model at relatively low Al volume fractions. The difference between the maximum magnitudes of tensile or compressive residual stresses (predicted by the two models) could be as large as about 100 MPa (larger than the yield strength of the starting materials). Furthermore, the tooling geometry minimally affects the prediction of the hardening models. In conclusion, backstresses are not to be overlooked for accurate estimations of drawing residual stresses at low Al volume fractions.

Abstract: International audience; An easy-to-handle protocol for the synthesis of an efficient electrophilic (phenylsulfonyl)difluoromethylating reagent, namely, the S-([phenylsulfonyl]difluoromethyl)-dibenzothiophenium salt I, is depicted. The latter was synthesized on approximately 40 g scale in a three-step/one-purification sequence from commercially available or easy-to-synthesize starting materials with an estimated global prize of about 10.6 €/g. The bench-stable reagent I was found to be air- and moisture-tolerant. By changing the counter anion, a small library of electrophilic sources (reagents I–III) is now available for the (phenylsulfonyl)difluoromethylation reaction. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements have been also carried out on the different salts (I–III) along with a key intermediate to ensure a safe process.

Abstract: International audience; We describe an efficient catalytic strategy for enantio- and diastereoselective synthesis of homochiral β-CF3, β-SCF3, and β-OCF3 benzylic alcohols. The approach is based on dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) with Noyori–Ikariya asymmetric transfer hydrogenation leading to simultaneous construction of two contiguous stereogenic centers with up to 99.9% ee, up to 99.9:0.1 dr, and up to 99% isolated yield. The origin of the stereoselectivity and racemization mechanism of DKR is rationalized by density functional theory calculations. Applicability of the previously inaccessible chiral fluorinated alcohols obtained by this method in two directions is further demonstrated: As building blocks for pharmaceuticals, illustrated by the synthesis of heat shock protein 90 inhibitor with in vitro anticancer activity, and in particular, needle-shaped crystals of representative stereopure products that exhibit either elastic or plastic flexibility, which opens the door to functional materials based on mechanically responsive chiral molecular crystals.

Abstract: Water ices at 15 and 144 K were bombarded by swift heavy ions, 45.8 MeV 58Ni11 + and 606 MeV 64Zn26 +, to measure the induced chemical and physical effects. The column densities of water and the synthesized species, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ozone (O3), were monitored via infrared spectroscopy. The formation and destruction cross-sections of precursor and products were determined and compared with literature. The H2O2 formation and destruction cross-sections reveal a linear dependence with electronic stopping power, σ ∝ Se. The sputtering yield (Y0) shows a power law with electronic energy lost, $Y_0\propto S_\mathrm{e}^2$, and an exponential increase with the sample temperature. The findings indicate that the radiolysis rate of water ice is higher at low temperatures while the desorption yield increases at higher temperatures. A large amount of water ice is located in the grain mantles of the circumstellar envelopes and the interstellar medium regions, which are exposed to galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). The synthesis of H2O2 and O3 molecules as a function of absorbed doses of GCR irradiation and their irradiation time is analysed in detail. Besides, the extrapolation of the sputtering yield rates, as a function of time and temperature, for astrophysical conditions can contribute to a better understanding of non-thermal sputtering of water ices.

Abstract: Electrospun nanofibers have emerged as a new class of materials that combines both lightweight and compelling mechanical properties, promising a new area of less expensive and more efficient materials to be used in a wide range of applications. However, the structure-properties aspect of nanofibers has not been fully elucidated due to difficulties associated with their nanostructunanofibre, relaxation structurale, structure polymorphique, calorimétrie différentielle à balayage rapidere. The aim of this research is to contribute to the understanding of a particular feature of nanofibers which is the molecular orientation, a feature that is generally mentioned to explain the properties of electrospun fibers, by the study of the polyamide 6 (PA6) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber mats. This study was conducted using spectroscopic techniques and thermal techniques. The Fast Scanning Calorimetry (FSC) allowed to trace the signature of molecular orientation in PAN nanofiber mats by the investigation of their structural relaxation kinetics, that was found to be slower as nanofibers diameters decrease. The study of the crystalline structure of PA6 nanofiber mats revealed the predominance of a polymorphic crystalline conformation and its higher thermal stability for thinner nanofibers, which illustrated the tunability of the nanofibers crystalline structure when varying their processing parameters.; Les nanofibres électrofilées représentent une nouvelle classe de matériaux combinant à la fois légèreté et propriétés mécaniques exceptionnelles ayant un énorme potentiel d’application dans plusieurs domaines. Cependant, l'aspect structure-propriétés des nanofibres n'est pas encore maîtrisé en raison des difficultés liées à leur structure nanométrique. L’objectif de ce travail est de contribuer à la compréhension d’une caractéristique particulière des nanofibres qui est l’orientation macromoléculaire, un critère généralement cité quand il s’agit des propriétés des nanofibres, par l’étude des mats de nanofibres en polyamide 6 (PA6) et polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Cette étude a été menée à l'aide de techniques spectroscopiques thermiques. La calorimétrie différentielle à balayage rapide (FSC) a permis de sonder la signature de l'orientation macromoléculaire dans les mats de nanofibres de PAN par l'étude de leur cinétique de relaxation structurale, qui s'est avérée plus lente lorsque le diamètre des nanofibres diminue. L'étude de la structure cristalline des mats de nanofibres de PA6 a révélé la prédominance d'une conformation cristalline polymorphe avec une meilleure stabilité thermique pour les nanofibres les plus fines.

Abstract: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are the subject of numerous studies and controversies on the risks they could generate in the environment and on human health. They are electron dense nanoparticles that have a chemical signature and are thus detectable by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (NanoSIMS 50). Moreover, abundant in sunscreens (for anti-ultraviolet sunscreen filter properties), they constitute a good material of study for the development of the imaging by correlation TEM/NanoSIMS.As TEM uses electrons and NanoSIMS uses ions, it was necessary to define a sample preparation protocol (sunscreen applied on human skin) adapted to both instruments for the detection, characterization and localization of few nanometers nano-objects in sections of a few tens of nanometers thickness. The data obtained and processed have allowed the development of the overlay of TEM and NanoSIMS images on the one hand and to lead to a 3D reconstruction of objects smaller than the thickness of the section on the other hand. It appears that the TEM/NanoSIMS correlation completes, reinforces and brings more results than each instrument provides, and that aggregated or isolated nanoparticles are retained by the corneocytes at the skin surface.; Les nanoparticules de dioxyde de titane (TiO2) font l’objet de nombreux travaux et controverses sur les risques qu’elles pourraient engendrer dans l’environnement et sur la santé humaine. Ce sont des nanoparticules denses aux électrons qui possèdent une signature chimique et sont ainsi repérables au Microscope Electronique à Transmission (MET) et au Spectromètre de Masse d’Ions Secondaires (NanoSIMS 50). De plus, abondantes dans les crèmes solaires (pour leurs propriétés de filtre anti ultra-violets), elles constituent un bon matériel d’étude pour la mise au point de l’imagerie par corrélation MET/NanoSIMS.Comme le MET utilise des électrons et le NanoSIMS des ions, il a fallu définir un protocole de préparation d’échantillon (crème solaire appliquée sur la peau humaine) adapté aux deux instruments pour la détection, la caractérisation et la localisation de nano-objets de quelques nanomètres dans des coupes de quelques dizaines de nanomètres d’épaisseur. Les données obtenues et traitées ont permis de mettre au point la superposition des images MET et NanoSIMS d’une part et de conduire à une reconstruction 3D d’objets de taille inférieure à l’épaisseur de la coupe d’autre part. Il en ressort que la corrélation MET/NanoSIMS complète, renforce et apporte davantage de résultats que ce que fournit chaque instrument isolément. Il ressort également que les nanoparticules isolées ou agrégées sont retenues par la barrière cornéocytaire à la surface de la peau.

Abstract: International audience; As building blocks of multifunctional materials involving coupling at the nanoscale, highly doped semiconductor nanocrystals are of great interest for potential applications in nanophotonics. In this work, we investigate the plasmonic properties of highly doped Si nanocrystals embedded in a silica matrix. These materials are obtained by evaporation of heavily Phosphorus-doped SiO/SiO2 multilayers in a ultrahigh vacuum chamber followed by rapid thermal annealing. For P contents between 0.7 and 1.9 at%, structural investigations at the nanoscale give clear evidence that P atoms are mainly located in the core of Si nanocrystals with concentrations reaching up to 10 at%, i.e. well beyond the solid solubility limit of P in bulk Si. Alloying and formation of SiP nanoparticles is observed for P contents exceeding 4 at% in the multilayer. Infrared absorption measurements give evidence of a localized surface plasmon resonance located in the 3 to 6 µm range. A core-shell structure was used to model Si nanocrystals embedded in a silica matrix. Based on the Mie theory and the Drude model, both the mobility and the free charge carrier density were extracted from the simulation, with values reaching 27 cm 2 V-1 s-1 and 2.3×10 20 cm-3 , respectively. This results in a dopant activation rate of about 8 %.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, epoxy networks used for civil engineering constructions are aged at ambient temperature, and the impact of the early stages of aging on mechanical properties is analyzed. It is observed that Young's modulus and the yield stress increase with the aging time whereas the strain at break and the toughness decrease. The structural causes for these variations are investigated by swelling experiments, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical analysis. By combining experimental results, it is deduced that the aging process occurs in two stages. During the first 7 days of aging, the change in mechanical properties should essentially be attributed to the postcuring, which results in additional crosslinking reactions. When increasing the aging time to 21 days, the crosslinking density reaches a plateau, but a second stage emerges, in which the mechanical properties continue evolving in the same way, with variations of the mechanical parameters being of comparable amplitude. This second stage is attributed to the evolution of the thermodynamic state of the glass, leading to a densification of the epoxy network through minimization of the free volume, and favoring the creation of physical interactions between polymer segments. Therefore, structural relaxation is shown to have a significant impact on the mechanical properties.

Abstract: International audience; Additive Manufacturing is a powerful process to build complex geometry. Besides the numerous process parameters influencing the mechanical part performances, others parameters related to the initial powder feedstock or component machining are of most importance. In this study, the combined effect of a wide particle size distribution, surface machining and stress-relief heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties (tension and fatigue) of a stainless steel AISI 316L, produced by laser powder bed fusion, is investigated. In order to correctly investigate those parameters separately, the netshape/machined character of the sample, alongside with the heat treatment is studied for two kinds of powder having different particle size distributions, i.e, narrow and widely spread. Results show that a large spread of particle size is only slightly detrimental to the fatigue life, in particular in high cycle conditions due to a larger porosity related to a weakly more uneven particle spatial distribution in the bed. Nevertheless, this effect is of a second order compared to machining or heat treatments which greatly affect the mechanical behaviour. Surface machining and moderate heat treatment are then the best post-operational steps to increase the fatigue life in high cycle fatigue conditions independently of the particle size distribution. Results are discussed in terms of defects, microstructural modifications, surface roughness, martensitic transformation and mechanical loading.

Abstract: International audience; Understanding the distributions and behaviors of dopants in Si nanocrystal are the primary and necessary issues to realize the controllable doping at nanoscale and develop the next generation of optoelectronic devices. This work reports the atomic-scale distributions of phosphorus and boron dopants in Si nanocrystals mul- tilayers. The phosphorus-doped and boron-doped Si nanocrystals/SiO2 multilayers are fabricated by PECVD and subsequently annealed at 1000 ◦C. It is found that the locations of phosphorus are redistributed after the formation of Si nanocrystals due to the combined effects of formation energy and self-purification. Phosphorus dopants are mainly distributed at the Si nanocrystals surfaces to passivate the dangling bonds, while part of them incorporate into Si nanocrystals lattice sites to provide free electrons. However, boron dopants exhibit different distributions in contrast to phosphorus. The concentration of boron on Si nanocrystals surfaces can reach as high as 40.0 at. %, which forms a dopant-shell covering on Si nanocrystals. Meanwhile, the boron dopant-shell can modify the surface states of Si nano- crystals like Si-oxide related emission centers and dangling bonds, which is responsible for the luminescence properties. Moreover, the boron-aggregations with concentration near 74.8 at. % are appeared inside Si nanocrystals and led to the damage of crystalline lattice.

Abstract: International audience; In studies of ion-induced molecular fragmentation, the challenging measurement of the velocity distribution of fragments emitted below 1-eV kinetic energy is rarely achieved, although most fragments have an energy below this value. Here, we study H$^+$ fragment emission in collisions of 10-keV O$^+$ ions with H$_2$ molecules using a field-free time-of-flight technique developed specifically to detect sub-eV fragments. We find that, in the velocity map, the binary ridge due to direct H$^+$ knockout is split into two parts arising from the rotational motion of the H$_2$ molecule, and that this split scales with rotational velocity. The velocity distribution of the nuclei in the original molecule is determined and the thermally populated J = 1 rotational level is found to be the dominant contributor, although asymmetry in the split indicates projectile-induced rotational transitions between M sublevels. These rotation effects influence fragment emission probabilities, thus carrying important consequences for the radiation-induced hydrogen loss and H$_2$ dissociation in the atmospheres or exospheres of planets and moons.

Abstract: We report a huge organic diversity in the Tissint Mars meteorite and the sampling of several mineralogical lithologies, which revealed that the organic molecules were nonuniformly distributed in functionality and abundance. The range of organics in Tissint meteorite were abundant C 3-7 aliphatic branched carboxylic acids and aldehydes, olefins, and polyaromatics with and without heteroatoms in a homologous oxidation structural continuum. Organomagnesium compounds were extremely abundant in olivine macrocrystals and in the melt veins, reflecting specific organo-synsthesis processes in close interaction with the magnesium silicates and temperature stresses, as previously observed. The diverse chemistry and abundance in complex molecules reveal heterogeneity in organic speciation within the minerals grown in the martian mantle and crust that may have evolved over geological time.

Abstract: International audience; The Health Effects of Cardiac Fluoroscopy and Modern Radiotherapy (photon and proton) in Pediatrics (HARMONIC) is a five-year project funded by the European Commission that aimed to improve the understanding of the long-term ionizing radiation (IR) risks for pediatric patients. In this paper, we provide a detailed overview of the rationale, design, and methods for the biological aspect of the project with objectives to provide a mechanistic understanding of the molecular pathways involved in the IR response and to identify potential predictive biomarkers of individual response involved in long-term health risks. Biological samples will be collected at three time points: before the first exposure, at the end of the exposure, and one year after the exposure. The average whole-body dose, the dose to the target organ, and the dose to some important out-of-field organs will be estimated. State-of-the-art analytical methods will be used to assess the levels of a set of known biomarkers and also explore high-resolution approaches of proteomics and miRNA transcriptomes to provide an integrated assessment. By using bioinformatics and systems biology, biological pathways and novel pathways involved in the response to IR exposure will be deciphered.
