Abstract: A graph database is a digraph whose arcs are labeled with symbols from a fixed alphabet. A regular graph pattern (RGP) is a digraph whose edges are labeled with regular expressions over the alphabet. RGPs model navigational queries for graph databases called conjunctive regular path queries (CRPQs). A match of a CRPQ in the database is witnessed by a special navigational homomorphism of the corresponding RGP to the database. We study the complexity of deciding the existence of a homomorphism between two RGPs. Such homomorphisms model a strong type of containment between the two corresponding CRPQs. We show that this problem can be solved by an EXPTIME algorithm (while general query containmement in this context is EXPSPACE-complete). We also study the problem for restricted RGPs over a unary alphabet, that arise from some applications like XPath or SPARQL. For this case, homomorphism-based CRPQ containment is in NP. We prove that certain interesting cases are in fact polynomial-time solvable., 15 pages. Short version appeared in the proceedings of the 15th Conference on Computability in Europe (CIE 2019)

Abstract: Given a matching between n red points and n blue points by line segments in the plane, we consider the problem of obtaining a crossing-free matching through flip operations that replace two crossing segments by two non-crossing ones. We first show that (i) it is NP-hard to alpha-approximate the shortest flip sequence, for any constant alpha. Second, we show that when the red points are colinear, (ii) given a matching, a flip sequence of length at most n(n-1)/2 always exists, and (iii) the number of flips in any sequence never exceeds (n(n-1)/2) (n+4)/6. Finally, we present (iv) a lower bounding flip sequence with roughly 1.5 n(n-1)/2 flips, which shows that the n(n-1)/2 flips attained in the convex case are not the maximum, and (v) a convex matching from which any flip sequence has roughly 1.5 n flips. Abstract: International audience; A set of segments in the plane may form a Euclidean TSP tour or a matching, among others. Optimal TSP tours as well as minimum weight perfect matchings have no crossing segments, but several heuristics and approximation algorithms may produce solutions with crossings. To improve such solutions, we can successively apply a flip operation that replaces a pair of crossing segments by non-crossing ones. This paper considers the maximum number D(n) of flips performed on n segments. First, we present reductions relating D(n) for different sets of segments (TSP tours, monochromatic matchings, red-blue matchings, and multigraphs). Second, we show that if all except t points are in convex position, then D(n) = O(tn^2), providing a smooth transition between the convex O(n^2) bound and the general O(n^3) bound. Last, we show that if instead of counting the total number of flips, we only count the number of distinct flips, then the cubic upper bound improves to O(n^8/3).

Abstract: CG:SHOP is an annual geometric optimization challenge and the 2022 edition proposed the problem of coloring a certain geometric graph defined by line segments. Surprisingly, the top three teams used the same technique, called conflict optimization. This technique has been introduced in the 2021 edition of the challenge, to solve a coordinated motion planning problem. In this paper, we present the technique in the more general framework of binary constraint satisfaction problems (binary CSP). Then, the top three teams describe their different implementations of the same underlying strategy. Abstract: This paper describes the heuristics used by the Shadoks team for the CG:SHOP 2021 challenge. This year's problem is to coordinate the motion of multiple robots in order to reach their targets without collisions and minimizing the makespan. It is a classical multi agent path finding problem with the specificity that the instances are highly dense in an unbounded grid. Using the heuristics outlined in this paper, our team won first place with the best solution to 202 out of 203 instances and optimal solutions to at least 105 of them. The main ingredients include several different strategies to compute initial solutions coupled with a heuristic called Conflict Optimizer to reduce the makespan of existing solutions., Comment: Journal version to appear on ACM Journal on Algorithmics

Abstract: International audience; Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become the reference imaging for the management of a large number of diseases. The number of MR examinations increases every year, simultaneously with the number of patients receiving a cardiac electronic implantable device (CEID). A CEID was considered an absolute contraindication for MRI for years. The progressive replacement of conventional pacemakers and defibrillators by MR-conditional CEIDs and recent data on the safety of MRI in patients with "MR-nonconditional" CEIDs have progressively increased the demand for MRI in patients with a CEID. However, some risks are associated with MRI in CEID carriers, even with "MR-conditional" devices because these devices are not "MR-safe". A specific programing of the device in "MR-mode" and monitoring patients during MRI remain mandatory for all patients with a CEID. A standardized patient workflow based on an institutional protocol should be established in each institution performing such examinations. This joint position paper of the Working Group of Pacing and Electrophysiology of the French Society of Cardiology and the Société française d'imagerie cardiaque et vasculaire diagnostique et interventionnelle (SFICV) describes the effect and risks associated with MRI in CEID carriers. We propose recommendations for patient workflow and monitoring and CEID programming in MR-conditional, "MR-conditional nonguaranteed" and MR-nonconditional devices.

Abstract: Background: It has been shown that cold caloric irrigation decreases the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain in the vertically positioned lateral canal as measured by head impulse testing. This effect is most probably caused by a sustained deflection of the cupula in the inhibitory direction. Objective: The aim of the present experiment was to answer the question if a sustained excitatory deflection increases the gain of the reflex in healthy volunteers. Methods: In order to deflect the cupula, cold caloric irrigation was applied in prone (forward head hanging) position. In this position cold thermal irrigation elicited an excitatory caloric nystagmus with an ipsilateral fast phase. Results: When head impulses were applied immediately after cold caloric irrigation, the gain of the VOR decreased in comparison to the values measured before irrigation. Conclusions: Together with the previous results cited above, these data show that biasing the cupula in either direction decreases its sensitivity with respect to high acceleration stimuli. This might occur because the deviation elicits a partial mechanical and electrophysiological saturation of the cupula.

Abstract: This paper proposes the estimation of a mutual shape from a set of different segmentation results using both active contours and information theory. The mutual shape is here defined as a consensus shape estimated from a set of different segmentations of the same object. In an original manner, such a shape is defined as the minimum of a criterion that benefits from both the mutual information and the joint entropy of the input segmentations. This energy criterion is justified using similarities between information theory quantities and area measures, and presented in a continuous variational framework. In order to solve this shape optimization problem, shape derivatives are computed for each term of the criterion and interpreted as an evolution equation of an active contour. A mutual shape is then estimated together with the sensitivity and specificity of each segmentation. Some synthetic examples allow us to cast the light on the difference between the mutual shape and an average shape. The applicability of our framework has also been tested for segmentation evaluation and fusion of different types of real images (natural color images, old manuscripts, medical images).

Abstract: While academic achievement has been associated with physical activity, the present work questions the potential association between the physical fitness level of adolescents and the type of school they attend, ranging from academic to technical schools. 20,228 young French students from 76 schools (9,196 females), mean age 15.8±1.8 years, performed the Diagnoform© test. This dataset includes two higher education institutions (n=870), 37 general high schools (n=13,125), 18 professional-oriented high schools (n=3,569), 5 agricultural high schools (n=132), 2 vocational training centers (n=202) and 12 rural vocational training centers (n=1,137). Abstract: International audience; The function of outer hair cells (OHCs), the mechanical actuators of the cochlea, involves the anchoring of their tallest stereocilia in the tectorial membrane (TM), an acellular structure overlying the sensory epithelium. Otogelin and otogelin-like are TM proteins related to secreted epithelial mucins. Defects in either cause the DFNB18B and DFNB84B genetic forms of deafness, respectively, both characterized by congenital mild-to-moderate hearing impairment. We show here that mutant mice lacking otogelin or otogelin-like have a marked OHC dysfunction, with almost no acoustic distortion products despite the persistence of some mechanoelectrical transduction. In both mutants, these cells lack the horizontal top connectors, which are fibrous links joining adjacent stereocilia, and the TM-attachment crowns coupling the tallest stereocilia to the TM. These defects are consistent with the previously unrecognized presence of otogelin and otogelin-like in the OHC hair bundle. The defective hair bundle cohesiveness and the absence of stereociliary imprints in the TM observed in these mice have also been observed in mutant mice lacking stereocilin, a model of the DFNB16 genetic form of deafness, also characterized by congenital mild-to-moderate hearing impairment. We show that the localizations of stereocilin, otogelin, and otogelin-like in the hair bundle are interdependent, indicating that these proteins interact to form the horizontal top connectors and the TM-attachment crowns. We therefore suggest that these 2 OHC-specific structures have shared mechanical properties mediating reaction forces to sound-induced shearing motion and contributing to the coordinated displacement of stereocilia.

Abstract: AIMS: Several addictovigilance studies have described the off‐label use of morphine sulfate (MS) for nonchronic pain in opioid use disorder (OUD) patients as an alternative to conventional opioid substitution treatments (OSTs). This study primarily sought to compare the incidence of unintentional opioid‐related overdose in the year following the prescription initiation in off‐label MS users, compared to OST‐maintained patients. METHODS: Sequential cohorts of OUD patients who were regularly dispensed MS, buprenorphine, or methadone, between 1 April 2012 and 31 December 2014, were retrospectively identified using the French nationwide healthcare data system. The incidence of overdoses, deaths, doctor shopping, and complications of a viral, bacterial or thrombotic nature, was compared using the Cox regression method. RESULTS: Overall, 1075, 20 834 and 9778 OUD patients without chronic‐pain were included in the MS, buprenorphine, and methadone cohorts, respectively. Overdose incidence was 3.8 (P

Abstract: We consider a problem of Discrete Tomography which consists of reconstructing a finite lattice set S ⊂ Z 2 from given horizontal and vertical X-rays (i.e. with prescribed numbers of points in each row and column). Without additional requirements, the problem can be solved in polynomial time. Many variants require the solution to be in a chosen class A . For instance, the problem is NP-complete for the class A = H ∩ V of HV -convex lattice sets and it is polynomial for the class A = H ∩ V ∩ P of HV -convex polyominoes. Twenty years after these results, the problem's complexity remains unknown for A = C , the class of C -convex lattice sets (i.e. two-dimensional lattice polytopes). The main difficulty to solve this problem comes from combinatorial structures called switching components. Switching components are closed path with horizontal and vertical edges such that the solutions S are composed of either the elements of even or of odd indices. This binary choice can be encoded by a Boolean variable associated with the switching component and the convexity constraints are simply encoded by SAT clauses (2-clauses for HV -convexity and 3-clauses for C -convexity). The purpose of the paper is to investigate the properties of the switching components and the consequences of the convexity requirements. We divide the switching components in two classes: regular if their turning angle is constant, irregular otherwise. We prove that adjacent regular switching components have the same Boolean values. This property allows us to merge them into extended switching components. We prove that if all switching components are regular, then the extended switching components are all independent (then the number of solutions with the considered feet is 2 n , where n is the number of extended switching components). Finally, we prove that they are geometrically ordered.

Abstract: Background Proper segmentation of the liver from medical images is critical for computer-assisted diagnosis, therapy and surgical planning. Knowledge of its vascular structure allows division of the liver into eight functionally independent segments, each with its own vascular inflow, known as the Couinaud scheme. Couinaud's description is the most widely used classification, since it is well-suited for surgery and accurate for the localization of lesions. However, automatic segmentation of the liver and its vascular structure to construct the Couinaud scheme remains a challenging task. Methods We present a complete framework to obtain Couinaud's classification in three main steps; first, we propose a model-based liver segmentation, then a vascular segmentation based on a skeleton process, and finally, the construction of the eight independent liver segments. Our algorithms are automatic and allow 3D visualizations. Results We validate these algorithms on various databases with different imaging modalities (Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT)). Experimental results are presented on diseased livers, which pose complex challenges because both the overall organ shape and the vessels can be severely deformed. A mean DICE score of 0.915 is obtained for the liver segmentation, and an average accuracy of 0.98 for the vascular network. Finally, we present an evaluation of our method for performing the Couinaud segmentation thanks to medical reports with promising results. Conclusions We were able to automatically reconstruct 3-D volumes of the liver and its vessels on MRI and CT scans. Our goal is to develop an improved method to help radiologists with tumor localization.

Abstract: A single perioperative dose of glucocorticoid or gabapentinoid, or a combination of the 2, may improve postoperative analgesia, but data are still insufficient to be conclusive. In this single-center, randomized, double-blind, and double-dummy trial, we aimed to test whether the analgesic effect of adding preoperative pregabalin, at a dose unlikely to induce side effects, to preoperative dexamethasone improves early mobilization after spinal surgery.A total of 160 patients undergoing scheduled lumbar disk surgery (145 analyzed) comprised the study cohort. The patients received either 0.2 mg/kg intravenous dexamethasone before incision, or 150 mg oral pregabalin 1 hour before surgery, or a combination of the 2, or none of the above (control). Analgesia was supplemented by acetaminophen and ketoprofen, plus oxycodone ad libitum. The primary outcome was pain intensity during the first attempt to sit up, assessed the morning of the first postoperative day on an 11-point Numerical Rating Scale. Pain at rest and when standing up, opioid consumption, and tolerance were also assessed.None of the treatments tested differed from the control group in terms of efficacy or tolerance, even 6 months after surgery. The overall quality of analgesia was good, with only 10% and 30% of pain scores exceeding 3/10 for pain at rest and during movement, respectively.In this surgical model with the given anesthetic and analgesic environment, there was no advantage gained by adding low-dose pregabalin or dexamethasone. The multimodal analgesic protocol applied to all patients may have reduced the size of the effect.

Abstract: Future 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) applications will heavily rely on long-range communication technologies such as low-power wide area networks. In particular, LoRaWAN built on LoRa physical layer is gathering increasing interest, both from academia and industries, for enabling low-cost energy efficient IoT wireless sensor networks for, e.g., environmental monitoring over wide areas. While its communication range may go up to 20 km, the achievable bit rates in LoRaWAN are limited to a few kilobits per second. In the event of collisions, the perceived rate is further reduced due to packet loss and retransmissions. First, to alleviate the harmful impacts of collisions, we propose a decoding algorithm that enables to resolve several superposed LoRa signals. Our proposed method exploits the slight desynchronization of superposed signals and specific features of LoRa physical layer. Secondly, we design a full MAC protocol enabling collision resolution. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms conventional LoRaWAN jointly in terms of system throughput, energy efficiency as well as delay. These results show that our scheme is well suited for 5G and IoT systems, as one of their major goals is to provide the best trade-off among these performance objectives.

Abstract: Human and animal imaging studies demonstrated that chronic pain profoundly alters the structure and the functionality of several brain regions. In this article, we conducted a longitudinal and multimodal study to assess how chronic pain affects the brain. Using the spared nerve injury model which promotes both long-lasting mechanical and thermal allodynia/hyperalgesia but also pain-associated comorbidities, we showed that neuropathic pain deeply modified the intrinsic organization of the brain functional network 1 and 2 months after injury. We found that both functional metrics and connectivity of the part A of the retrosplenial granular cortex (RSgA) were significantly correlated with the development of neuropathic pain behaviours. In addition, we found that the functional RSgA connectivity to the subiculum and the prelimbic system are significantly increased in spared nerve injury animals and correlated with peripheral pain thresholds. These brain regions were previously linked to the development of comorbidities associated with neuropathic pain. Using a voxel-based morphometry approach, we showed that neuropathic pain induced a significant increase of the gray matter concentration within the RSgA, associated with a significant activation of both astrocytes and microglial cells. Abstract: Minimizing the communication time due to the transfer over a network of the intermediary results produced during the execution of a distributed query is a fundamental problem in distributed database management systems. We take a new look at this problem by investigating the relationship between the communication time and a remote data access middleware. We focus on two middleware parameters that are manually tuned by database administrators or programmers: the fetch size (i.e., the number of tuples that are communicated at once) and the message size (i.e., the size of the buffer at the middleware level). We present an experimental study which shows that these parameters have a crucial impact on the communication time. Then, we propose the MIND framework, which tunes the aforementioned middleware parameters, while adapting to different queries (that may vary in terms of selectivity) and networks (that may vary in terms of bandwidth). The main technical contributions of MIND are (i) a communication time estimation function that takes into account the middleware parameters, the size of the query result and the network environment, and (ii) an iterative optimization algorithm to find the fetch size and the message size that allow a good trade-off between low resource consumption and low communication time. We conclude with an experimental study that emphasizes the effectiveness of the MIND framework.

Abstract: Significance In humans, inner ear development is completed in utero, with hearing onset at ∼20 weeks of gestation. However, genetic forms of congenital deafness are typically diagnosed during the neonatal period. Gene therapy approaches in animal models should therefore be tested after the period of hearing onset, to determine whether they can reverse an existing deafness phenotype. Here, we used a mouse model of DFNB9, a human deafness form accounting for 2–8% of all cases of congenital genetic deafness. We show that local gene therapy in the mutant mice not only prevents deafness when administered to immature hearing organs, but also durably restores hearing when administered at a mature stage, raising hopes for future gene therapy trials in DFNB9 patients., Autosomal recessive genetic forms (DFNB) account for most cases of profound congenital deafness. Adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based gene therapy is a promising therapeutic option, but is limited by a potentially short therapeutic window and the constrained packaging capacity of the vector. We focus here on the otoferlin gene underlying DFNB9, one of the most frequent genetic forms of congenital deafness. We adopted a dual AAV approach using two different recombinant vectors, one containing the 5′ and the other the 3′ portions of otoferlin cDNA, which exceed the packaging capacity of the AAV when combined. A single delivery of the vector pair into the mature cochlea of Otof−/− mutant mice reconstituted the otoferlin cDNA coding sequence through recombination of the 5′ and 3′ cDNAs, leading to the durable restoration of otoferlin expression in transduced cells and a reversal of the deafness phenotype, raising hopes for future gene therapy trials in DFNB9 patients.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Aggressiveness is a stigma frequently associated with schizophrenia. The role of insight as a risk factor of aggressiveness remains contradictory; mainly because single measures of these states mask their complexity and heterogeneity.Methods: This study was conducted on 666 patients aged 15 and above with a DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder, drawn from the French national network of schizophrenia expert center database. Collected data comprised socio-demographics and standardized psychiatric assessments. Aggressiveness was evaluated using the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire and insight using the Scale to assess Unawareness of Mental Disorder (SUMD) and Birchwood Insight Scale (BIS).Results: Hostility was the aggressiveness dimension the most strongly associated with SUMD insight dimensions. Patients aware of their illness were nearly twice as likely to show hostility than those seriously unaware (OR = 1.95, 95% CI.: 1.08-3.5), but not when further adjusting for depression. Similarly, those aware of the consequences of their illness and of their symptoms were more hostile. Patients moderately aware of illness consequences had a higher risk of both anger and physical aggressiveness than those unaware (OR = 2.63, 95% CI.: 1.42-4.86, OR = 2.47, 95% CI.: 1.33-4.60, respectively), even when adjusting for depression for anger.Conclusion: Our study confirms that a multi-dimensional approach to insight and aggressiveness is essential to understand the types of links between these clinical states. Insight may trigger the expression of an underlying hostile tendency, maybe via depression and self-stigmatisation. This should be taken into account in therapeutic approaches to improve insight.

Abstract: Leaf litter decomposition is a key mechanism in headwater streams, allowing the transfer of nutrients and energy into the entire food web. However, chemical contamination resulting from human activity may exert a high pressure on the process, possibly threatening the structure of heterotrophic microbial communities and their decomposition abilities. In this study, the rates of microbial Alnus glutinosa (Alnus) leaf decay were assessed in six French watersheds displaying different land use (agricultural, urbanized, forested) and over four seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter). In addition, for each watershed at each sampling time, both upstream (less-contaminated) and downstream (more-contaminated) sections were monitored. Toxicities (estimated as toxic units) predicted separately for pesticides and pharmaceuticals as well as environmental parameters (including nutrient levels) were related to microbial decay rates corrected for temperature and a range of fungal and bacterial community endpoints, including biomass, structure, and activity (extracellular ligninolytic and cellulolytic enzymatic activities). Results showed that agricultural and urbanized watersheds were more contaminated for nutrients and xenobiotics (higher pesticides and pharmaceuticals predicted toxicity) than forested watersheds. However, Alnus decay rates were higher in agricultural and urbanized watersheds, suggesting compensatory effects of nutrients over xenobiotics. Conversely, fungal biomass in leaves was 2-fold and 1.4-fold smaller in urbanized and agricultural watersheds than in the forested watersheds, respectively, which was mostly related to pesticide toxicity. However, no clear pattern was observed for extracellular enzymatic activities except that β-glucosidase activity positively correlated with Alnus decay rates. Together, these results highlight microbial communities being more efficient for leaf decomposition in polluted watersheds than in less contaminated ones, which is probably explained by changes in microbial community structure. Overall, our study showed that realistic chemical contamination in stream ecosystems may affect the biomass of Alnus-associated microbial communities but that these communities can adapt themselves to xenobiotics and maintain ecosystem functions.

Abstract: International audience; The Stop Number Problem arises in the management of a dial-a-ride system served by a fleet of autonomous electric vehicles. In such a system, clients request for a ride from an origin station to a destination station, and a fleet of capacitated vehicles must satisfy all requests. The goal is to minimize the number of pick-up/drop-off operations. In this paper we focus on a special case of this problem that was recently conjectured to be NP-Hard. In this regard, we show how such special case relates to other problems known in the literature in order to derive some polynomial-time solvable variants. Moreover, we provide a positive answer to the conjecture by showing that the problem is NP-Hard for any fixed capacity greater than or equal to 2, even for the case where the graph of requests is restricted to the class of planar bipartite graphs. Our proof of NP-Hardness also improves the complexity results known in the literature for the related problems identified.

Abstract: International audience; Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is considered as the forthcoming predominant cause for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). NAFLD-HCC may rise in non-cirrhotic livers in 40 to 50% of patients. The aim of this study was to identify different metabolic pathways of HCC according to fibrosis level (F0F1 vs. F3F4). A non-targeted metabolomics strategy was applied. We analyzed 52 pairs of human HCC and adjacent non-tumoral tissues which included 26 HCC developed in severe fibrosis or cirrhosis (F3F4) and 26 in no or mild fibrosis (F0F1). Tissue extracts were analyzed using 1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. An optimization evolutionary method based on genetic algorithm was used to identify discriminant metabolites. We identified 34 metabolites differentiating the two groups of NAFLD-HCC according to fibrosis level, allowing us to propose two metabolomics phenotypes of NAFLD-HCC. We showed that HCC-F0F1 mainly overexpressed choline derivatives and glutamine, whereas HCC-F3F4 were characterized by a decreased content of monounsaturated fatty acids (FA), an increase of saturated FA and an accumulation of branched amino acids. Comparing HCC-F0F1 and HCC-F3F4, differential expression levels of glucose, choline derivatives and phosphoethanolamine, monounsaturated FA, triacylglycerides were identified as specific signatures. Our metabolomics analysis of HCC tissues revealed for the first time two phenotypes of HCC developed in NAFLD according to fibrosis level. This study highlighted the impact of the underlying liver disease on metabolic reprogramming of the tumor.

Abstract: Description logics have been widely studied and used in several knowledge-based systems. They allow to model knowledge and more importantly to reason over it. Subsumption relationship, a hierarchical relationship between concepts, is one of the most common reasoning task. Matching and unification generalize subsumption to description involving variables. In this paper, we study the problem of reasoning in description logics with variables. More specifically, we consider refreshing semantics for variables in the context of the EL description logic. We investigate a particular reasoning mechanism, namely weak subsumption, which can be viewed as a generalization of matching and unification in presence of refreshing variables. We show that weak-subsumption is EXPTIME-complete. Our main technical results are derived by establishing a correspondence between this logic and variable automata.

Abstract: International audience; A major research area in Computer Assisted Intervention (CAI) is to aid laparoscopic surgery teams with Augmented Reality (AR) guidance. This involves registering data from other modalities such as MR and fusing it with the laparoscopic video in real-time, to reveal the location of hidden critical structures. We present the first system for AR guided laparoscopic surgery of the uterus. This works with pre-operative MR or CT data and monocular laparoscopes, without requiring any additional interventional hardware such as optical trackers. We present novel and robust solutions to two main sub-problems: the initial registration, which is solved using a short exploratory video, and update registration, which is solved with real-time tracking-by-detection. These problems are challenging for the uterus because it is a weakly-textured, highly mobile organ that moves independently of surrounding structures. In the broader context, our system is the first that has successfully performed markerless real-time registration and AR of a mobile human organ with monocular laparoscopes in the OR.

Abstract: International audience; The Routing and Spectrum Assignment problem in Flexgrid Elastic Optical Networks can be modeled in two phases: a selection of paths in the network and an interval coloring problem in the edge-intersection graph of these paths. The interval chromatic number equals the smallest size of a spectrum such that a proper interval coloring is possible, the weighted clique number is a natural lower bound. Graphs where both parameters coincide for all induced subgraphs and for all possible integral weights are called superperfect. We examine the question which minimal non-superperfect graphs can occur in the edge-intersection graphs of paths in different underlying networks and show that for any possible network (even if it is restricted to a path) the resulting edge-intersection graphs are not necessarily superperfect.

Abstract: Recently, classification and dimensionality reduction (DR) have become important issues of hyperspectral image (HSI) analysis. Especially, HSI classification is a challenging task due to the high-dimensional feature space, with a large number of spectral bands, and a low number of labeled samples. In this paper, we propose a new HSI classification approach, which is called fused 3-D spectral-spatial deep neural networks for hyperspectral image classification. We propose an unsupervised band selection method to avoid the problem of redundancy between spectral bands and automatically find a set of groups Ck each one containing similar spectral bands. Moreover, the model uses the different groups of selected bands to extract spectral-spatial features in order to improve the classification rate. Each group is associated with a 3-D CNN model, which are then fused to improve the precision of classification. The main advantage of the proposed method is to keep the initial spectral-spatial features by automatically selecting relevant spectral bands, which improves the classification of HSI using a low number of labeled samples. Experiments on two real HSIs, Indian Pines and Salinas datasets, are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results show that the proposed method reaches competitive good performances, and achieves better classification rates compared to various state-of-the-art techniques.

Abstract: International audience; Aster-like nanoparticles (ALNs) are newly described femto-entities. Their ecology (e.g., geographic distribution, spatial dynamic, preferences, forcing factors) is still unknown. Here, we report that these entities, which have largely been ignored until now, can develop or maintain themselves in most aquatic environments in the Loire River catchment, France. We observed a significant influence of the trophic state on ALN ecological distributions. A positive relationship between prokaryotic abundance and ALN (r(2) = 0.72,p < 0.01) has been identified, but its exact nature remains to be clarified. Combined with their ubiquitous distribution and high abundances (up to 7.9 x 10(6) ALNs mL(-1)) recorded in our samples, this probably makes ALNs an overlooked functional component in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract: International audience; Augmented Reality (AR) in monocular liver laparoscopy requires one to register a preoperative 3D liver model to a laparoscopy image. This is a difficult problem because the preoperative shape may significantly differ from the unknown intraoperative shape and the liver is only partially visible in the laparoscopy image. Previous approaches are either manual, using a rigid model, or automatic, using visual cues and a biomechanical model. We propose a new approach called the hybrid approach combining the best of both worlds. The visual cues allow us to capture the machine perception while user interaction allows us to take advantage of the surgeon's prior knowledge and spatial understanding of the patient anatomy. The registration accuracy and repeatability were evaluated on phantom, animal ex vivo and patient data respectively. The proposed registration outperforms the state of the art methods both in terms of accuracy and repeatability. An average registration error below the 1 cm oncologic margin advised in the literature for tumour resection in laparoscopy hepatectomy was obtained.

Abstract: BACKGROUND Trichosporonosis is a rare invasive infection in humans mainly due to Trichosporon asahii, and especially recovered from patients having haematological malignancy. Since 2012, IGS1 region sequencing is used as a genotyping method to distinguish isolates, with high frequency of one haplotype worldwide and a geographic specificity for some haplotypes. OBJECTIVES We compared the IGS1 genotyping method and whole genome sequencing (WGS) to study the relationship between clinical isolates involved in two grouped cases in France. METHODS IGS1 sequencing and antifungal susceptibility testing were performed for 54 clinical isolates. Clinical data for 28 isolates included in surveillance programs were analysed. Whole genome was sequenced for 32 clinical isolates and the type strain. RESULTS All isolates were intrinsically resistant to flucytosine, while voriconazole had the most potent in vitro activity. Abstract: Honeybees ensure a key ecosystem service by pollinating many agricultural crops and wild plants. However, in the past few decades, managed bee colonies have been declining in Europe and North America. Researchers have emphasized both parasites and pesticides as the most important factors. Infection by the parasite Nosema ceranae and exposure to pesticides can contribute to gut dysbiosis, impacting the honeybee physiology. Here, we examined and quantified the effects of N. ceranae, the neonicotinoid thiamethoxam, the phenylpyrazole fipronil and the carboxamide boscalid, alone and in combination, on the honeybee gut microbiota. Chronic exposures to fipronil and thiamethoxam alone or combined with N. ceranae infection significantly decreased honeybee survival whereas the fungicide boscalid had no effect on uninfected bees. Interestingly, increased mortality was observed in N. ceranae-infected bees after exposure to boscalid, with synergistic negative effects. Regarding gut microbiota composition, co-exposure to the parasite and each pesticide led to decreased abundance of Alphaproteobacteria, and increased abundance of Gammaproteobacteria. The parasite also induced an increase of bacterial alpha-diversity (species richness). Our findings demonstrated that exposure of honeybees to N. ceranae and/or pesticides play a significant role in colony health and is associated with the establishment of a dysbiotic gut microbiota.

Abstract: International audience; A survey of mycology laboratories for antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST) was undertaken in France in 2018, to better understand the difference in practices between the participating centers and to identify the difficulties they may encounter as well as eventual gaps with published standards and guidelines. The survey captured information from 45 mycology laboratories in France on how they perform AFST (number of strains tested, preferred method, technical and quality aspects, interpretation of the MIC values, reading and interpretation difficulties). Results indicated that 86% of respondents used Etest as AFST method, with a combination of one to seven antifungal agents tested. Most of the participating laboratories used similar technical parameters to perform their AFST method and a large majority used, as recommended, internal and external quality assessments. Almost all the participating mycology laboratories (98%) reported difficulties to interpret the MIC values, especially when no clinical breakpoints are available. The survey highlighted that the current AFST practices in France need homogenization, particularly for MIC reading and interpretation.

Abstract: International audience; Disease and stress can disrupt the circadian rhythm of activity in animals. Sensor technologies can automatically detect variations in daily activity, but it remains difficult to detect exactly when the circadian rhythm disruption starts. Here we report a mathematical Fourier-Based Approximation with Thresholding (FBAT) method designed to detect changes in the circadian activity rhythm of cows whatever the cause of change (typically disease, stress, oestrus). We used data from an indoor positioning system that provides the time per hour spent by each cow resting, in alleys, or eating. We calculated the hourly activity level of each cow by attributing a weight to each activity. We considered 36-h time series and used Fourier transform to model the variations in activity during the first and last 24 h of these 36-h series. We then compared the Euclidian distance between the two models against a given threshold above which we considered that rhythm had changed. We tested the method on four datasets (giving a cumulative total of ~120000 cow*days) that included disease episodes (acidosis, lameness, mastitis or other infectious diseases), reproductive events (oestrus or calving) and external stimuli that can stress animals (e.g. relocation). The method obtained over 80% recall of normal days and detected 95% of abnormal rhythms due to health or reproductive events. FBAT could be implemented in precision livestock farming system monitoring tools to alert caretakers to individual animals needing specific care. The FBAT method also has the potential to detect anomalies in humans to guide healthcare intervention or in wild animals to detect disturbances. We anticipate that chronobiological studies could apply FBAT to help relate circadian rhythm anomalies to specific events.

Abstract: Evidential clustering methods assign objects to clusters with a degree of belief, allowing for better representation of cluster overlap and outliers. Based on the theoretical framework of belief functions, they generate credal partitions which extend crisp, fuzzy and possibilistic partitions. Despite their ability to provide rich information about the partition, no evidential clustering algorithm for categorical data has yet been proposed. This paper presents a categorical version of ECM, an evidential variant of k-means. The proposed algorithm, referred to as catECM, considers a new dissimilarity measure and introduces an alternating minimization scheme in order to obtain a credal partition. Experimental results with real and synthetic data sets show the potential and the efficiency of cat-ECM for clustering categorical data.

Abstract: International audience; Hyperacusis, an exaggerated, sometimes painful perception of loudness even for soft sounds, is a poorly understood distressing condition. While the involvement of modified gain of central auditory neurons and the influence of nonauditory brain regions are well-documented, the issue of where in the auditory system these abnormalities arise remains open, particularly when hyperacusis comes without sensorineural hearing loss. Here we used acute intraperitoneal administration of sodium salicylate (150 mg/kg) in rats, enough to produce > 10-dB decrease in acoustic startle threshold with mild hearing loss at low frequencies (60 dB SPL. Candidate circuits able to act at the same time on the startle reflex, the MEMR and ABRs may be serotoninergic, as salicylate is known to increase brain serotonin and 5-HT neurons participate in MEMR and ABR circuits.

Abstract: Background: No randomized study powered to compare balloon expandable (BE) with self expanding (SE) transcatheter heart valves (THVs) on individual end points after transcatheter aortic valve replacement has been conducted to date. Methods: From January 2013 to December 2015, the FRANCE-TAVI nationwide registry (Registry of Aortic Valve Bioprostheses Established by Catheter) included 12 141 patients undergoing BE-THV (Edwards, n=8038) or SE-THV (Medtronic, n=4103) for treatment of native aortic stenosis. Long term mortality status was available in all patients (median 20 months; interquartile range, 14 to 30). Patients treated with BE-THV (n=3910) were successfully matched 1:1 with 3910 patients treated with SE-THV by using propensity score (25 clinical, anatomical, and procedural variables) and by date of the procedure (within 3 months). The first coprimary outcome was ≥ moderate occurrence of paravalvular regurgitation or in-hospital mortality, or both. The second coprimary outcome was 2-year all-cause mortality. Results: In propensity–matched analyses, the incidence of the first coprimary outcome was higher with SE-THV (19.8%) compared with BE-THV (11.9%; relative risk, 1.68 [95% CI, 1.46–1.91]; P P P =0.01). During follow up, all cause mortality occurred in 899 patients treated with SE-THV (2-year mortality, 29.8%) and in 801 patients treated with BE-THV (2-year mortality, 26.6%; hazard ratio, 1.17 [95% CI, 1.06–1.29]; P =0.003). Similar results were found using inverse probability of treatment weighting using propensity score analysis. Conclusion: The present study suggests that use of SE-THV was associated with a higher risk of paravalvular regurgitation and higher in-hospital and 2-year mortality compared with use of BE-THV. These data strongly support the need for a randomized trial sufficiently powered to compare the latest generation of SE-THV and BE-THV. Clinical Trial Registration: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov . Abstract: International audience; Le clustering de graphes est l'une des techniques clés qui permet de comprendre les structures présentes dans les données de graphe. La détection des clusters et l'identification des ponts et des bruit sont également des tâches critiques car elles jouent un rôle important dans l'analyse des graphes. Récem-ment, plusieurs algorithmes de clustering de graphes ont été proposés et utilisés dans de nombreux domaines d'application. La plupart de ces algorithmes sont basés sur les algorithmes de clustering structurel. Néanmoins, ces derniers ont été conçus pour le traitement des petits graphes. D'où, leur performance peut se dégrader dans le cas des graphes larges qui imposent des défis supplémentaires. Dans cet article, nous proposons DSCAN, un algorithme distribué de clustering de graphes qui est basé sur le clustering structurel. Notre algorithme est im-plimenté sur la base de framework de traitement de grands graphes BLADYG. L'évaluation expérimentale de DSCAN a montré son efficacité et sa compétiti-vité pour le traitement de grands graphes.

Abstract: Managing a one-way vehicle sharing system means periodically using carriers (trucks, drivers, self-platoon convoys…) in order to move free access vehicles from excess to deficit stations in order to avoid local shortages. Most authors deal with a preemptive version of this problem while considering carrier routes as the master object and focusing on carrier riding costs. We address here a non preemptive version constrained by strong makespan restrictions, which we handle, with the purpose of linking static and on line paradigms, according to a vehicle driven approach which puts vehicle routing strategies at the core of the decisional process.

Abstract: The maximum number of edge-disjoint spanning trees in a network has been used as a measure of the strength of a network. It gives the number of disjoint ways that the network can be fully connected. This suggests a game theoretic analysis that shows the relative importance of the different links to form a strong network. We introduce the Network strength game as a cooperative game defined on a graph $$G=(V,E)$$. The player set is the edge-set E and the value of a coalition $$S \subseteq E$$ is the maximum number of disjoint spanning trees included in S. We study the core of this game, and we give a polynomial combinatorial algorithm to compute the nucleolus when the core is non-empty.

Abstract: International audience; Background & aims: Type I hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) and dysmetabolic iron overload syndrome (DIOS) are the two most prevalent iron overload diseases. Although many food components, particularly polyphenols, reduce iron bioavailability, there is no clinically validated nutritional strategy to reduce food-iron absorption in patients with these diseases. We aimed to determine whether supplementation with 100 mg of procyanidins during a meal reduces dietary iron absorption in patients with HH or DIOS.Methods: 20 HH and 20 DIOS patients were enrolled in a double-blind three-period crossover randomized study. Basal serum iron level was measured following an overnight fast. Each patient consumed a standardized test iron-rich meal containing 43 mg of iron with two capsules of placebo or procyanidin supplementation. Each period was separated by a 3-day wash-out period. The primary objective was a reduction of dietary iron absorption, assessed by a reduction of serum-iron area under the curve (AUC) corrected for baseline serum iron.Results: All patients completed the study. The meal and the procyanidin supplements were well tolerated. In both HH and DIOS patients, the iron-rich meal induced a significant increase of serum iron compared with baseline at 120, 180, 240 min, from 8 to 9.1%(p = 0.002, 0.001 and 0.003, respectively) in DIOS and from 15.8 to 25.7% (p < 0.001) in HH. Iron absorption was 3.5-fold higher in HH than in DIOS (p < 0.001). Procyanidin supplementation did not significantly modify iron absorption in DIOS (AUC of added iron 332.87 +/- 649.55 vs 312.61 +/- 678.61 mu mol.h/L, p = 0.916) or in HH (1168.62 +/- 652.87 vs 1148.54 mu mol.h/L +/- 1290.05, p = 0.917).Conclusions: An iron-rich test meal led to a marked increase in iron absorption in HH but a mild increase in DIOS. Procyanidin supplementation does not significantly reduce dietary iron absorption in either disease. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd and European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism.
