Abstract

15 pages; International audience; Mollusc shells are composed of more than 95% calcium carbonate and less than 5% organic matrix consisting mostly of proteins, glycoproteins and polysaccharides. In this study, we investigated the effects of matrix macromolecular components extracted from the shells of two edible molluscs of economic interest, i.e., the blue mussel Mytilus edulis and the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. The potential biological activities of these organic molecules were analysed on human dermal fibroblasts in primary culture. Our results demonstrate that shell extracts of the two studied molluscs modulate the metabolic activities of the cells. In addition, the extracts caused a decrease of type I collagen and a concomitant increase of active MMP-1, both at the mRNA and the protein levels. Therefore, our results suggest that shell extracts from M. edulis and C. gigas contain molecules that promote the catabolic pathway of human dermal fibroblasts. This work emphasises the potential use of these shell matrices in the context of anti-fibrotic strategies, particularly against scleroderma. More generally, it stresses the usefulness to valorise bivalve shells that are coproducts of shellfish farming activity.

Abstract

International audience; This paper focuses on the study of fibrosis induced by an implanted medical device and explores the possibility of characterizing this process by in situ measurement of electrical impedance. The approach combines concurrent electrical and biological characterizations of fibrotic tissue, applied to electrodes implanted in an animal model. The methodology used is described. Initial results evidence the strong correlation between fibrotic tissue and electrical parameters. Identification of such electrical parameters will enable the establishment of a reliable monitoring method.

Abstract

The mechanical behavior of oolithic carbonate rocks was investigated for selected rocks with two different microstructural attributes: uniform (UP) and rimmed (RP) distribution of microporosity within ooids. These oolithic carbonate rocks are from the Oolithe Blanche formation, a deep saline aquifer in the Paris Basin, and a possible target for CO2 sequestration and geothermal production. Samples of similar physical properties (porosity, grain diameter, cement content) but different microporosity textures were deformed under triaxial configuration, in water saturated conditions, at 28 MPa of confining pressure, 5 MPa of pore pressure and at a temperature of 55 °C. During the experiments, acoustic velocities were monitored, and permeability was measured. The results show that the mechanical behavior of these microporous carbonates are strongly controlled by the microporosity distribution within the grains, at the origin of variations in elastic properties, mechanical strength and failure mode. The lower velocities measured in UP samples indicate a larger compliance of the whole structure. The mechanical response indicates that UP samples are characterized by a ductile behavior whereas RP samples display a brittle behavior. Using a conceptual model for the failure envelope of both rocks, our observations can be accounted for if one considers a significant variation of the critical pressure P ∗ , with UP samples having a lower P ∗ than RP samples. The permeability evolution under stress was interpreted using a revised Kozeny–Carman equation, showing that fluid flow is strongly affected by the tortuosity of the pore space, which is controlled by the microporosity distribution within the ooids. This study brings new insight into the parameters controlling the physical and mechanical response of oolithic carbonates, and the possible impact on production of geothermal energy at depth or storativity for CO2 sequestration operations.

Abstract

Dental implant stability, which is an important parameter for the surgical outcome, can now be assessed using quantitative ultrasound. However, the acoustical propagation in dental implants remains poorly understood. The objective of this numerical study was to understand the propagation phenomena of ultrasonic waves in cylindrically shaped prototype dental implants and to investigate the sensitivity of the ultrasonic response to the surrounding bone quantity and quality. The 10-MHz ultrasonic response of the implant was calculated using an axisymetric 3D finite element model, which was validated by comparison with results obtained experimentally and using a 2D finite difference numerical model. The results show that the implant ultrasonic response changes significantly when a liquid layer is located at the implant interface compared to the case of an interface fully bounded with bone tissue. A dedicated model based on experimental measurements was developed in order to account for the evolution of the bone biomechanical properties at the implant interface. The effect of a gradient of material properties on the implant ultrasonic response is determined. Based on the reproducibility of the measurement, the results indicate that the device should be sensitive to the effects of a healing duration of less than one week. In all cases, the amplitude of the implant response is shown to decrease when the dental implant primary and secondary stability increase, which is consistent with the experimental results. This study paves the way for the development of a quantitative ultrasound method to evaluate dental implant stability.

Abstract

14 pages; International audience; he ferrofluid impregnation technique combined with anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility measurements (AMSff) is one of the ways to analyze the 3-D geometry of the pore space in a rock and indirectly to infer the anisotropy of permeability. We applied this method on different types of rocks (sandstones and carbonates) with a range of different porosity values (10-30%) and permeability (1 mD to 1 D). To get additional information on both the pore aspect ratio and the directional anisotropy we used another technique, measuring the anisotropy of P-waves velocity (APV) in dry and water saturated conditions. Comparing between both methods shows that despite the good agreement in directional data, inferring the true shape of the porosity is not straightforward. Modeling the presence of an elastic anisotropy in the solid matrix for sandstones allows one to get more consistent values for the pore aspect ratio obtained from both APV and AMSff. However for the carbonate rocks, due to an intricate distribution of microstructures, the aspect ratios obtained show significant discrepancies between the two methods. The ferrofluid method is very sensitive to the quality of the impregnation and suffers from a major drawback which is the threshold size of investigation, limited by the size of the magnetite nanoparticles (10 nm) and probably this method doesn't see all the porosity. On the other hand with acoustic methods, the range of porosity investigated is probably larger but several microstructural attributes can contribute to the elastic anisotropy which makes the pore shape effect more difficult to decipher. Therefore, we promote the combined use of both methods in order to get more reliable information on the pore shape in porous media.

Abstract

International audience; Mollusc shells are composed of more than 95% calcium carbonate and less than 5% of an organic matrix consisting mostly of proteins, glycoproteins and polysaccharides. Previous studies have elucidated the biological activities of the shell matrices from bivalve molluscs on skin, especially on the expression of the extracellular matrix components of fibroblasts. In this work, we have investigated the potential biological activities of shell matrix components extracted from the shell of the scallop Pecten maximus on human fibroblasts in primary culture. Firstly, we demonstrated that shell matrix components had different effects on general cellular activities. Secondly, we have shown that the shell matrix components stimulate the synthesis of type I and III collagens, as well as that of sulphated GAGs. The increased expression of type I collagen is likely mediated by the recruitment of transactivating factors (Sp1, Sp3 and human c-Krox) in the 2112/261 bp COL1A1 promoter region. Finally, contrarily to what was obtained in previous works, we demonstrated that the scallop shell extracts have only a small effect on cell migration during in vitro wound tests and have no effect on cell proliferation. Thus, our research emphasizes the potential use of shell matrix of Pecten maximus for dermo-cosmetic applications.

18 pages; International audience; The Oolithe Blanche Formation was studied in three quarries, located at the south-eastern edge of the Paris Basin (France). Heterogeneities in reservoir properties were assessed through a sedimentological, diagenetic and petrophysical study. The relationships between depositional settings, diagenesis and petrophysical properties were analysed using detailed petrographic studies, image analysis, Nano CTscans and petrophysical measurements. The carbonate reservoir pore network is mainly controlled by intraparticle microporosity which ensures the connectivity with interparticle meso- and macroporosity. Early cementation vs. early compaction processes (mainly grain interpenetration) may have considerable influence on fluid-flow properties and parameters such as permeability, acoustic velocities and tortuosity. Better reservoir properties are found when compaction processes begin before cementation. From statistical analyses, e.g. Principal Component Analysis and Linear Discriminant Analysis, a sedimentological/diagenetic and petrophysical model is proposed that is in a good agreement with the geological model developed from field work.

Abstract

International audience; A new boron dipyrromethene-ferrocene (BODIPY-Fc) conjugate with pentafluorophenyl as the meso substituent and two Fc termini was synthesized and its spectroscopic and electrochemical features were analysed. An intramolecular charge transfer from the donor Fc to the acceptor BODIPY has been predicted by theory and confirmed experimentally, leading to efficient fluorescence quenching when the dyad is in the neutral state. Fluorescence can be triggered by oxidizing both ferrocenyl units either chemically or electrochemically. Eventually, a fully reversible fluorescence switch is evidenced by coupling TIRF microscopy with electrolysis in an electrochemical cell.

International audience; Size and orientation effects on the phase coexistence in MnAs/GaAs(001) microribbons were studied using magnetic force microscopy. The magnetostructural phase coexistence reported in MnAs thin films is also observed in the microribbons, even in the smallest ones. However, the stripe array of MnAs films is only preserved in the ribbons confined along the [0001] direction. Nevertheless, the configuration of the magnetoelastic domains is altered in the ribbons confined along the [11 (2) over bar0] direction. In this last case, the micrometric ribbons exhibit a redistribution of the magnetoelastic phases owed to the relaxation of the epitaxial strains. The results are understood in terms of the anisotropic change in the lattice parameters at the magnetostructural transition.

Abstract

International audience; The alpha-beta elastic striped pattern of MnAs/GaAs(001) is shown to be perturbed by Fe overlayer growth. After nanometric Fe thin film deposition, the elastic pattern is still present in the 10-45 degrees C temperature range, but the period of the pattern increases by up to 40% for MnAs epilayers 70 to 400 nm thick. This observation can be interpreted within a simple model calculation of the pattern elastic energy, providing quantitative agreement with the experimental results. Abstract

International audience; New geophysical data collected at the Aden‐Owen‐Carlsberg (AOC) triple junction between the Arabia, India, and Somalia plates are combined with all available magnetic data across the Gulf of Aden to determine the detailed Arabia‐Somalia plate kinematics over the past 20 Myr. We reconstruct the history of opening of the Gulf of Aden, including the penetration of the Sheba Ridge into the African continent and the evolution of the triple junction since its formation. Magnetic data evidence three stages of ridge propagation from east to west. Seafloor spreading initiated ∼20 Myr ago along a 200 kmlong ridge portion located immediately west of the Owen fracture zone. A second 500 kmlong ridge portion developed westward up to the Alula‐Fartak transform fault before Chron 5D (17.5 Ma). Before Chron 5C (16.0 Ma), a third 700 km‐long ridge portion was emplaced between the Alula‐Fartak transform fault and the western end of the Gulf of Aden (45°E). Between 20 and 16 Ma, the Sheba Ridge propagated over a distance of 1400 km at an extremely fast average rate of 35 cm yr−1. The ridge propagation resulted from the Arabia‐Somalia rigid plate rotation about a stationary pole. Since Chron 5C (16.0 Ma), the spreading rate of the Sheba Ridge decreased first rapidly until 10 Ma and then more slowly. The evolution of the AOC triple junction is marked by a change of configuration around 10 Ma, with the formation of a new Arabia‐India plate boundary. Part of the Arabian plate was then transferred to the Indian plate.

Abstract

International audience; The structural and magnetic properties of cobalt nanowires embedded in epitaxial CeO(2) layers are investigated. Combining electron microscopy with x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we show that polycrystalline metallic Co nanowires are formed during the growth. These nanowires are oriented in average along the growth axis with a misalignment distribution, have a predominant hcp structure and a narrow distribution of diameters. Their magnetic properties are overall dominated by shape effects with an easy axis oriented along the mean direction of the wires axis. The reversal mechanism is studied in details for samples with 3 and 5 nm mean diameters. The competition between shape and magnetocrystalline anisotropies is evidenced at 3 nm diameter. Upon reduction in the lateral dimensions, the nanowires tend to behave like aligned Stoner-Wohlfarth elongated particles with effective uniaxial anisotropy resulting from this competition.

Abstract

Metalworking fluids (MWF) are mainly emulsions of oil in water containing additives such as corrosion inhibitors, emulsifiers, defoamers, and biocides. Microbial contamination of MWF is almost systematic, and some of their constituents serve as nutrients for contaminating microorganisms. Biocides for MWF are protection products used to counter microbial contaminations and growth. Ideally, a biocide for MWF should have the following non-exhaustive criteria: have a broad-spectrum activity, be usable at low concentrations, be compatible with the formulation and the physical-chemical properties of MWF, be stable over time, retain its effectiveness in the presence of soiling, have no corrosive action on metals, present no danger to humans and the environment, be inexpensive. The future lies in the development of new molecules with biocidal activity corresponding to these ideal specifications, but in the meantime, it is possible to improve the performance of existing molecules currently on the market. Different strategies for potentiation of the activity of existing biocides are possible. The compatibility of the potentiation strategies with their use in metal working fluids is discussed.

Abstract

In this article, four new phenothiazine derivatives (denoted as PT1, PT2, PT3 and PT4) are specifically in silico designed by molecular modelling for good light absorption properties @405 nm. The most interesting structures showing both intense violet/blue light absorption and high potential photochemical reactivity were synthesized for detailed investigations as photoinitiators/photosensitizers in the presence of an iodonium salt for the free radical photopolymerization of (meth)acrylates and the cationic polymerization of epoxides upon near-UV or visible light irradiation. Remarkably, two of the proposed structures (PT3 and PT4) from this in silico design were never synthesized prior to this work and were thus specifically designed for this work. Three-component photoinitiating systems based on PT/iodonium/amine (N-phenylglycine or ethyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate) are also developed for the free radical polymerization of acrylates. Both excellent polymerization rates and high final reactive function conversions were obtained. A full picture of the photochemical mechanisms is provided using different techniques: real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. Finally, the high performance of the phenothiazine derivatives is also shown in 3D printing experiments as well as in photocomposite synthesis using glass fibres (thick sample; using a LED@395 nm conveyor).

Abstract

Nowadays, thermal regulation of the indoor environment is mandatory to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The incorporation of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) and especially solid–solid PCMs (s/s PCMs) into building materials can be a major step forward in reducing energy consumption. Such materials are used for their high latent heat to save and release heat during phase change. To integrate these products in the fabrication of cementitious materials, it is essential to predict their influence on the rheological behaviour of construction materials. In this work, rheological measurements were carried out on composite suspensions made of cement or mortar plus s/s PCMs. Results showed that the fitting of the Herschel–Bulkley model with a constant value of flow exponent was reliable. The s/s PCMs influenced the consistency and the yield strength values, with the yield strength value being only slightly affected. The adaptation of an existing viscosity model is proposed to predict the consistency value of suspensions. Finally, an innovative approach to predict the flow behaviour is proposed and we highlight the research needs to mainstream the use of s/s PCMs in construction materials.

Abstract

Binders based on the alkaline activation of raw materials is a subject of increasing importance for construction. This study focuses on a new non-hydraulic binder based on the alkali-activation of limestone by an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. An optimized mortar of about 20 MPa compressive strength, made with siliceous sand, was studied by XRD, FTIR and SEM-EDX analyses showing that crystalline pirssonite and portlandite are the reaction products responsible of the cohesive capacity of the binder. A methodology based on thermal gravimetric analysis was applied to quantify the products formed and the consumption of reagents with high reliability.

Abstract

Polyurethane-based polymers are widely used in modern materials and as Phase Change Materials (PCMs) to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. The fungal development in buildings is favoured by the degradation of polymeric materials that act as nutritional substrates. In the present study, the fungal biodegradation of a polyether-urethane PCM (PUX1520) was investigated. Two methods of biodegradation by fungal growth on agar and in liquid media were used. Fungal growth on agar plates was monitored by measuring the surface area of each mycelium over a period of 11 days. The degradation products of PUX1520 were analysed by FT-IR and MALDI-TOF. The PUX1520 polymer had no impact on the growth of Aspergillus niger, while the growth of Penicillium sp. was increased in the presence of PUX1520. MALDI-TOF analysis revealed the existence of different soluble forms of the polymer whose concentration decreased after exposure to the fungal strains. From FT-IR analysis on the residual polymer material, an oxidation process is proposed to describe the dissociation of the urethane functions.

Abstract

International audience; Due to its geodynamic location in the Lesser Antilles arc, Basse-Terre of Guadeloupe displays an active volcanism which is favourable to the development of high-enthalpy geothermal energy. An exhumed analogue of the Bouillante geothermal reservoir has been recently characterized in Terre-de-Haut island (Les Saintes archipelago), giving an opportunity to study the cooling of a natural geothermal system and the related alterations.By coupling chlorite geothermometry and primary fluid inclusions in associated zoned quartz crystals located in N70 trending fractures, new insights on the Terre-de-Haut paleo-geothermal evolution can be inferred by distinguishing three new different episodes during functioning and cooling of this system: (i) a temperature of at least 240–270 °C in fluid inclusions trapped in the quartz core, (ii) chlorite formation at about 120 °C, and (iii) temperatures of ~50 °C - or less - in fluid inclusions of the quartz outer growth zones. Fluid inclusions also reveal that the hydrothermal fluid is of low salinity (2 wt% NaCl), probably of meteoric and sea water origin. Additionally, a second type of fluid inclusions observed in a banded quartz vein indicates at least an episode of a CO2-(H2O) fluid, with traces of H2S. Hence, some similarities can be highlighted between Terre-de-Haut and the Bouillante active geothermal systems in term of the highest temperatures of circulation events and gas composition, despite a difference in fluid origin. This study shows that some alteration episodes also occur at low temperature during the cooling of the geothermal system. Moreover, the N70 trending fractures, that have been identified as drains for the hot temperature fluids, have to be considered for future geothermal exploration.

Abstract

Electronic properties and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes of 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) and its derivatives with different chemical structures (π-expansion, benzothiazole substituent and additional PT unit) have been theoretically investigated. The red-shifts of enol absorption peaks are found for all HBT derivatives regardless of chemical structures, whereas the blue-shifts or red-shifts of keto emission peaks are dependent on the orientation of π-expansion and the additional PT unit compared to HBT, which are rationalized by frontier molecular orbitals. Among designed HBT derivatives, a HBT having two PT units connected with π-expansion along the nodal plane is the best candidate for fluorescent probes because of its keto emission at 1159 nm with the largest Stokes shift. Moreover, potential energy curves and dynamic simulations confirm that the emission at much longer wavelength is from the di-keto species driven by double PT process. Based on this theoretical investigation, the keto emission of HBT derivatives in NIR region can be achieved by the combination of π-expansion along the nodal plane and additional PT unit.

Abstract

The dry rot fungus Serpula lacrymans is the most destructive fungal agent of wood building materials in Europe, Russia, North America, and Japan. The identification of this wood-deteriorating agent and the discrimination of different fungal isolates is very important for the control of buildings in general and for the preservation of cultural heritage in particular. The objective of the study was to develop a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) method coupled with a partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) for the sample preparation and identification of S. lacrymans. Five distinct S. lacrymans strains were analysed and compared to two strains of unrelated fungal species. Different methods of mycelial growth, sample preparation, and FTIR spectral data normalisation were compared. FTIR analysis of a harvested mycelium grown on the surface of a polyether sulfone microfiltration membrane deposited on a malt extract agar medium, followed by vector normalization and PLS-DA statistical analysis, resulted in 100% correct attribution at phylum, species, and strain level, regardless of the type of standardization used. This study confirms the applicability of FTIR spectroscopy for the identification of S. lacrymans and the discrimination of different strains belonging to this species.

Abstract

International audience; In the present work, we investigate the mechanical weakening and deformation induced by water on a microporous carbonate rock, the Obourg Chalk from Mons Basin (Belgium), through conventional triaxial tests and injection tests. The injection tests were conducted by waterflooding critically loaded rock samples, initially in dry condition, in a way to minimize the variations in the effective pressures. Furthermore, the samples were instrumented with P-wave piezoelectric transducers to provide active ultrasonic monitoring while injecting. The results show a significant reduction in the mechanical strength of this chalk. Analysis of the mechanical tests and the associated deformation allows us to describe the mechanical behavior as a function of the confining pressure, which draws a brittle-ductile transition spanning from low to high confining pressure. The injection tests, moreover, revealed that the amount of water injected before triggering mechanical instability decreases exponentially with respect to the applied differential stress on the rock sample. The data, therefore, suggest that the failure might be controlled by a mechanical coupling between the water-invaded zone and the dry one. Since water-weakening plays an important role in several fields like oil industry, through secondary and tertiary recovery of hydrocarbons, Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), as well as in the mechanical stability of underground cavities, the outcome of this work is of primary importance in mitigating any kind of problems related to these operations.

Abstract

Fibrosis represents an open issue for medium to long-term active implants, such as pacemakers, given that this biological medium surrounds the stimulation electrodes and can impact or modify the performances of the system. For this reason, Embedded Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) techniques have been investigated these last years to sense the fibrosis. The following article introduces a new technique for EIS derived from multi-carrier digital communication methods. Due to its properties of flat spectrum and fast generation the Orthogonal-Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique for EIS represents an efficient and a low foot-print alternative compared to the classical sweep frequency technique. This article focuses on this approach and also proposes a solution that reduces the effect of high crest factor typically found in OFDM systems. An embedded implementation is also presented. This designed prototype is used here to characterize the impedance spectrum of a pacemaker's electrode achieving an accuracy of 99% when measuring with 64 OFDM subcarriers and with a sampling frequency of 12 kHz.

Abstract

This study focuses on analysis of the archaeal and fungal diversity associated with gypsum efflorescences damaging the walls of the Sorcerer’s prehistoric cave registered as a world cultural heritage site. Archaeal 16S rDNA and fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) clone libraries were constructed and analysed. Two thaumarchaeotal OTUs belonging to the Nitrososphaeraceae family dominated the archaeal community (100% of clones). Nitrososphaeraceae are obligate aerobic, chemolithoautotrophic organisms that derive their energy from the oxidation of ammonia and may contribute to primary productivity in the cave. Seven fungal OTUs belonging to Ascomycota and one belonging to Basidiomycota were present. The Cordycipitaceae family, mainly represented by entomophilous fungi, dominated the analysis (66.7% of clones). We show that archaeal and fungal OTUs are associated with gypsum efflorescences damaging the walls of the Sorcerer’s cave. The role of these microorganisms in the deterioration of the walls of the cave remains to be determined.

Abstract

Significant, poly-phase deformation occurred prior to, simultaneous with, and after the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean. Understanding this deformation history is essential for understanding the regional development and the mechanisms controlling rifting and subsequent failure or breakup. Here, we primarily use published constraints to construct deformable plate tectonic models for the southern North Atlantic from 200 Ma to present using GPlates. The aim of this work is to test both the capability of the GPlates deformable modelling approach and the reliability of published plate reconstructions. Overall, modelled crustal thickness values at 0 Ma produced from the deformable models show general, regional-scale, similarities with values derived from the inversion of gravity data for crustal thickness. However, the deformable models typically underestimate thinning in marginal basins and overestimate crustal thickness in continental fragments compared to values from gravity inversion. This is possibly due to: 1) thinning occurring earlier than the 200 Ma start time modelled, 2) variations in the original crustal thickness, 3) depth-dependent stretching, 4) rigid blocks undergoing some degree of thinning, and 5) variations in the mesh density of the models. The results demonstrate that inclusion of micro-continental fragments, and locally defined limits of continental crust, generally produce results more akin to observations. One exception is the Grand Banks where global GPlates models produce more realistic deformation, likely due to the inclusion of the exhumed domains continent-ward of the transition zone boundary. Results also indicate that Flemish Cap rotation is required to provide a reasonable fit between North America and Iberia, with the palaeo-position of the Flemish Cap likely to be the proto-Orphan sub-basins. Moreover, the East and West Orphan sub-basins formed separately due to the respective rotations of the Flemish Cap and the Orphan Knoll, which was likely associated with other continental fragments that subsequently contributed to the thicker crust forming the boundary between the East and West Orphan basins. The results also suggest a link between tectonic and magmatic processes. For example, the inclusion of an Orphan Knoll micro-continental block results in greater extension (higher beta factors) in the northern West Orphan Basin near the termination of the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone, and the site of the Charlie-Gibbs Volcanic Province (CGVP). Thus, we infer that the CGVP was likely influenced by plate tectonic processes through the concentration of strain resulting from interaction in proximity to the transform system. Finally, marginal basins that were considered to be conjugate and thus related, may only appear conjugate through later rotation of micro-continental blocks, and thus their genesis is not directly related.

Abstract

The addition of dimethylsulfoxide and Zonyl into poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) can be combined to achieve excellent electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. We demonstrate that it is possible to produce highly transparent conducting electrodes (FoM35) with low Young's modulus and high carrier density. We investigated the relationship between the transport properties of PEDOT:PSS and the morphology and microstructure of these films by performing Hall effect measurement, atomic force microscopy, and grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS). Our analysis reveals the distinctive impact of the two additives on the PEDOT and PSS components in the solid-state PEDOT:PSS films. Both additives induce fibrillar formation in the film, and the combination of the two additives only enhances the fibrillary nature and the aggregations of both PEDOT and PSS components of the film. In situ GIWAXS allows to time-resolve the morphology evolution. Our analysis reveals the influence of additives on the aggregation and self-assembly behaviors of the PEDOT and PSS components. Aggregation occurs during the transition from wet to dry film, which is observed exclusively during the thermal annealing step of the as-cast hydrated film. These results indicate that the additives directly influence the self-assembly behaviors of PEDOT and PSS during the ink-to-solid phase transformation of the hydrated film, which occurs primarily during the initial seconds of post-deposition thermal annealing.

Abstract

International audience; Conducting interpenetrating polymer networks (C-IPN) are a promising solution for the design of sensing and actuating parts at macro-or microscale. This class of polymers can be used in open-air, allowing for large displacements under low voltages with a reversible process. In this work, we are mainly interested in the electromechanical characterization of the material because of its particular behavior. Two working modes, namely actuation and sensing, are identified through modeling and experimental validations. The relationship between the output forces, the tip displacements and the driving voltages was highlighted with an experimental setup while actuating. On the other hand, the linear range and the sensitivity have been empirically modeled in sensing mode. We also demonstrate that this material is suitable to build a gripper for small objects. A sphere was lifted by the gripper, and the grasping force was successfully monitored by the sensing finger. This is a promising first step towards more complex 3D structures.

Abstract

WOS:000451818000007; This paper is devoted to study two acridone derivatives (A-2DPA and A-2PTz). These acridone compounds are synthesized and proposed as high performance visible light photoinitiators, in the presence of an iodonium salt or/and an amine (NPG or EDB), for both the free radical polymerization of (meth)acrylates and the cationic polymerization of epoxides upon irradiation with LED@405 nm. Excellent polymerization initiating abilities are found, and high final monomer conversions are obtained. A full picture of the involved photochemical mechanisms is provided. This paper is also concerned with the use of these acridone-based systems in new 3D printing resins. Finally, the usage of the new acridone derivatives for photopolyrners with low migration properties is particularly outlined.

Abstract

Electrochemical actuators based on electronic conducting polymers can convert electrical energy into mechanical work. The amplitude of the electromechanical response is related on volumetric charge density of conducting polymer electrodes and strain-to-charge ratio, an empiric electromechanical coupling parameter. In this work we describe the elaboration of high performance trilayer bending actuators by the electro-interpenetration of a conducting polymer, i.e. poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), within a host membrane. The host membrane is first elaborated as an interpenetrating polymer networks combining nitrile butadiene rubber network and poly(ethylene oxide) network. An oxidative chemical prepolymerization of EDOT allows turning the host membrane into conductive substrate suitable for subsequent electropolymerization. The electropolymerization of EDOT from the chemically polymerized layer allows controlled interpenetration of PEDOT underneath the surface. A significant increase of local concentration of PEDOT in the electrodes, compared to those obtained from oxidative polymerization lead to a significant increase of the charge density. The polymerization conditions do not have significant impact on sign and absolute value of strain-to-charge ratio, but it can be improved by the nature of the electrolyte. The combination of these two effects leads to an actuator with up to 15% of strain difference.

Abstract

The RILEM TC ASC-271 is developing a new laboratory test to assess the durability of porous building materials to salt crystallisation. The test encompasses two phases: salt accumulation and damage propagation. This paper focuses on designing a procedure for the accumulation phase; this is considered successful when salts crystallise at the material's evaporative surface (common situation observed on site) without the occurrence of damage. Two procedures were developed and tested on two limestones with different porosity: (1) capillary absorption of a salt solution followed by drying, and (2) continuous capillary absorption. Sodium chloride or sodium sulphate solutions were used. Several methods for assessing the salt distribution were employed: ultrasonic pulse velocity, drilling/scratching resistance, hygroscopic moisture content, ion chromatography, scanning electron microscopy, and micro X-ray fluorescence. The results enabled the selection of the most effective protocol for the salt accumulation phase. ISSN:0950-0618

Abstract

The construction sector in France generated 246 million tonnes of waste. Almost all of this waste is inert waste that does not pose a danger to human health and the environment. The recovery of this waste makes it possible to limit the extraction of virgin resources and, consequently, to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. The use of recycled aggregates allows the preservation of natural resources, the reduction of transport costs and therefore the reduction of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, rapid implementation, and finally reduction quantities of materials landfilled.As part of the ANR ECOREB, and more particularly at the level of Minh-Duc Nguyen's thesis, tools for knowledge and simulation of the behavior of recycled concrete have been developed. The validity of the analytical relationships developed to predict the mechanical properties of natural aggregate concrete for use in recycled aggregate concrete has been revised and appropriate modifications have been proposed to take into account the presence of recycled aggregates. However, the behavior of creep in compression under several loading levels and at different ages has not been studied at the same level as the mechanical behavior in compression, tension, and failure. In addition, the applicability of the analytical models proposed in the design standards has not been verified.The objective of this research work is to study the effect of recycled aggregates on the long-term behavior of concrete and to enrich the predictive models proposed by the standards by introducing relevant parameters that take into account the effect of the incorporation of recycled aggregates on delayed behavior.This study presents an analysis of the data available in the literature on the ability of design standards to predict the creep behavior of concrete from natural and recycled aggregates. The comparison between the experimental and predicted values shows a significant dispersion in terms of creep coefficient. Nevertheless, EC2 remains the most appropriate standard for estimating creep for both natural and recycled concrete compared to ACI and MC2010 fib. For this reason, the EC2 was chosen as the reference model to propose the appropriate modifications.Based on the general expression which gives the creep coefficient, the creep coefficient conventional and the power of the aging function, as well as the coefficient according to the relative humidity have been identified for the concrete of natural aggregates first by an optimization approach. Analysis of the results showed different values compared to the values of the existing standards. Furthermore, a new expression for the creep coefficient has been proposed by the EC2 model as well as by the ACI, which has been called modified models. With all these modifications, the correlation between the experimental and predicted values is improved for both models EC2 and ACI.In order to consider the presence of recycled aggregates in the concrete, the equivalent replacement rate was introduced in the modified expressions, which represents the mass of the recycled aggregates compared to the mass of the granular skeleton. A rheological model based on the Kevin-Voigt model was also developed as part of this work.For the modeling of the creep deformation of concrete with recycled aggregates, software ABAQUS and ANSYS was used which uses Prony coefficients to define the viscoelastic behavior of the material., Le secteur de la construction, a généré en France 246 millions de tonnes de déchets. Ces déchets sont composés en quasi-totalité de déchets inertes ne présentant pas de danger pour la santé humaine et l’environnement. La valorisation de ces déchets permet de limiter l’extraction des ressources vierges et de réduire, par conséquent, l’émission des gaz à effet de serre. L’utilisation des granulats recyclés permet la préservation des ressources naturelles, la réduction du cout de transport et par conséquent la réduction de la consommation d’énergie et des émissions de gaz à effet de serre, une mise en œuvre rapide, et enfin la réduction des quantités de matériaux mis en décharge.Dans le cadre de l’ANR ECOREB, et plus particulièrement au niveau de la thèse de Minh-Duc Nguyen, des outils de connaissances et de simulation du comportement des bétons recyclés ont été développés. La validité des relations analytiques développées pour prédire les propriétés mécaniques du béton des granulats naturels en vue de leur utilisation pour le béton des granulats recyclés a été révisée et les modifications appropriées ont été proposées afin de tenir compte de la présence des granulats recyclés. Néanmoins, le comportement du fluage en compression sous plusieurs niveaux de chargement et à différents âges n’a pas été étudié au même niveau que le comportement mécanique en compression, en traction, et à la rupture. De plus, l’applicabilité des modèles analytiques proposés dans les normes de dimensionnement n’a pas été vérifiée.L’objectif du présent travail de recherche est d’étudier l’effet des granulats recyclés sur le comportement du béton à long terme et d’enrichir les modèles prédictifs proposés par les normes par l’introduction de paramètres pertinents qui tiennent compte de l’effet de l’incorporation des granulats recyclés sur le comportement différé.Cette étude présente une analyse des données disponibles dans la littérature sur l’aptitude des normes du dimensionnement à prédire le comportement du fluage des bétons des granulats naturels et recyclés. La comparaison entre les valeurs expérimentales et prédites montre une dispersion significative en termes de coefficient de fluage. Néanmoins, l’EC2 reste la norme la plus appropriée pour estimer le fluage tant pour les bétons naturels que pour les bétons recyclés par rapport à l’ACI et à la fib MC2010. Pour cette raison, l’EC2 a été choisie comme modèle de référence pour proposer les modifications appropriées.En se basant sur l’expression générale qui donne le coefficient du fluage, le coefficient du fluage conventionne et la puissance de la fonction du vieillissement, ainsi que le coefficient en fonction de l’humidité relative ont été identifiés pour le béton des granulats naturels d’abord par une approche d’optimisation. L’analyse des résultats a montré des valeurs différentes par rapport aux valeurs des normes existent. Par ailleurs, une nouvelle expression du coefficient de fluage a été proposée par le modèle EC2 ainsi que par l’ACI, les quelles on l’a appelé modèles modifiés. Avec toutes ces modifications, la corrélation entre les valeurs expérimentales et prédites est améliorée pour les deux modèles EC2 et ACI.Afin de considérer la présence des granulats recyclés dans le béton, a été introduite dans les expressions modifiées le taux de remplacement équivalent, qui représente la masse des granulats recyclés par rapport à la masse du squelette granulaire. Un modèle rhéologique basé sur le modèle de Kevin-Voigt a été également développé dans le cadre de ce travail.Pour la modélisation de la déformation de fluage du béton avec des granulats recycles, on a utilisé les logiciels ABAQUS et ANSYS lequel utilise des coefficients de Prony pour définir le comportement viscoélastique du matériau.

Abstract

The effects of LDPE and PET in contact with heritage object made in PVC were studied and compared with silk paper during an artificial aging consisting in a temperature cycle and under controlled relative humidity. Color changes, morphological changes of the surface, plasticizers loss and surfaces properties were assessed over aging time. More pronounced color changes than for the references (without contact material and with silk paper) are observed for both contact materials but are more significant for PET whose surface has brown spots from three months of aging. The plasticizers cross LDPE from the outset of the aging but zein (protein additive) is evidenced only on the side in contact with the PVC. The PVC sample in contact with PET shows phtalic acid from DOP degradation but it remains on the PVC surface.

Abstract

The demand for polymer-based soft micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) is growing due to the substantial increase of flexible and wearable electronic devices. In this context, electronically conducting polymers (ECPs) fulfil the requirements for soft MEMS by offering the possibility of actuation and sensing, however, their miniaturization, their integration attempts and their resulting performances are still limiting their use in real applications. In this work, elaboration, integration and operation of soft and efficient microtransducers based on commercially available poly(3,4-ethyledioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) conductive ink into flexible chips is demonstrated. This original process overcomes existing hurdles to the fabrication of fully integrated ECP-based devices with gold remote contacts directly in contact with ECPs and further embedding in flexible support. These batch-fabricated chips are actuated at low voltage (±3.0 V) in open-air with individual accessible electrical connections. More importantly, the mechanical strain sensing is evidenced for the first time on such small ECP-based devices after full integration and demonstrating low impact of the microfabrication process. This work opens the way for further development of soft ECP-MEMS and integration into more complex systems with possible applications in microrobotics, microfluidics, optoelectronics, biology, medicine or space.

Abstract

International audience; Abstract We developed an invasion assay by using microfabricated culture devices. First, ovarian tumor spheroids were generated with a culture patch device consisting of an agarose membrane formed with a honeycomb microframe – the patch – and gelatin nanofiber backbone. By changing the dimensions of the honeycomb compartments we were able to control the number of cells and size of the spheroids. When the spheroids were placed on a patch coated with a thin membrane of fibrillary type I collagen, spheroid disruption was observed due to substrate induced cell migration. This process is straightforward and should be applicable to other cancer types, as well as assays under microfluidic conditions, thereby holding the potential for use in tumor modeling and anti-cancer drug development.

Abstract

Conventional rubber products, such as tires, seals, tubing, and damping systems are manufactured via a vulcanization process, which forms covalently crosslinked network structures and ensures mechanical robustness, thermal stability and chemical resistance. However, the covalent networks are permanent and these products cannot be reprocessed or reshaped, which makes vulcanised rubbers one of the major challenges facing waste management and the circular economy. To reduce waste pollution for products such as tires, conventional vulcanised rubbers must be replaced with reversibly crosslinked structures which are able to achieve mechanical robustness and chemical stability, whilst also being able to be reprocessed, reshaped, reused and recycled. State-of-the-art developments in supramolecular chemistry have shed light on a new generation of reprocessable elastomers and rubbers, which have the potential to tackle the long-standing issue of waste tire pollution. The introduction of dynamic covalent bonds or supramolecular interactions in traditional elastomers can produce reversibly crosslinked structures, where the synergy between the dynamic bonds in the network are carefully optimised to balance the ease of processing, mechanical properties, and structural stability. Furthermore, dynamic covalent bonds and supramolecular interactions can provide ‘living’ functions to elastomers, such as self-healing and stimuli-responsiveness. These properties can be further enhanced by the addition of nanofillers with tailored surface chemistry to provide a dual role as a dynamic crosslinker and reinforcing element. To create reprocessable and recyclable elastomers, the coupling of multiple dynamic interactions provides unlimited possibilities to optimise the structure and properties of recyclable rubbers. Here we critically overview the applications of dynamic chemistry in rubbers, with a focus on macromolecular design and strategies to balance the mechanical, functional (e.g. self-healing) and reprocessing properties.

Abstract

Electroactive, elastomeric, microfiber mats that show controllable pore size variation upon electrochemical stimulation are produced from semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (s-IPNs). This type of porous, elastomeric scaffolds that are mechanically dynamic under electrochemical stimuli could find new applications in stretchable electronics, (bio)filtration, soft robotics and stimulation of biological cells. These microfiber mats are prepared in two simple steps. Firstly, a mixture of high molecular weight nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and cross-linking agent, poly(ethylene glycol)dimethylacrylate are electrospun with in situ cross-linking. Secondly, a conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is embedded into the electrospun fibres by oxidative chemical polymerization of EDOT-swollen microfiber mats. This two-step process affords robust, highly flexible and conductive s-IPN microfiber mats. The microfiber mat undergoes a controllable pore size variation upon applying an electrochemical stimulus in the form of a reduction–oxidation cycle to the mats in an electrolyte. The maximum average pore size variation, measured in situ using confocal microscopy, is 25%, achieved in 1 M lithium bis-trifluoromethanesulfonimide (LiTFSI) in propylene carbonate (PC) for a potential step between +0.6 V and −0.5 V (vs. Ag wire). These mats also show pore size variation in a biologically compatible solution, phosphate buffered saline.

Abstract

International audience; A series of twelve dyes have been designed using 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalen-1-yli-dene)malononitrile as the electron acceptor. While using piperidine as a classical base for the Knoevenagel reaction , a nucleophilic attack of the amine on the formed push-pull chromophore occurred, producing an azaflu-orenone derivative. By varying the amine, a series of azafluorenones could be obtained. By using an aldehyde of extended conjugation, a spontaneous aromatization following the cyclization reaction could also be demonstrated. The optical, electrochemical properties of the different dyes were examined. Theoretical calculations were also carried out to support the experimental results.

Abstract

In this study polyurethanes (PU) are considered as solid-solid phase change material (s-s PCM) for thermal energy storage. Linear PU (PUL) and cross-linked PU (PUX) are synthesized using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and glycerol as cross-linker. The synthesis has been carried out with no solvent or catalyst, these conditions are especially appreciated for environmental and health reasons. PEG with different molecular weights were investigated: 1000 g·mol−1, 1500 g·mol−1 and 2000 g·mol−1. The crystallization of polymers is observed by polarized optic microscopy (POM). The thermal behaviour of the s-s PCM has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The effect of PEG’s molecular weight on thermal properties of s-s PCM has been investigated, as well as the effect of reactive stoichiometry and that of the cross-linker content. By varying the different parameters a range of s-s PCM with different properties are synthesized. The temperature transitions were found between 21 °C and 33 °C, and the latent heat between 76 J/g and 103 J/g, depending on the parameters. The hardness of PUX reaches 30 on shore D scale. This feature allows the reduction of the s-s PCM into powder which can be a very interesting property in order to incorporate PCM into various composite materials for thermal energy storage purposes.

Abstract

Our understanding of continent-ocean transition structures and magmatism in the absence of excessive magmatic additions has been guided by the observations and models developed at the magma-poor Iberia-Newfoundland conjugate margins. Recently these models have been challenged in the South China Sea in light of new IODP Expeditions 367-368-368X. We have used an integrated analysis of high quality seismic reflection and gravity anomaly data, calibrated against recent deep sea drilling results, to investigate margin structure and tectono-magmatic interplay during continental breakup and early seafloor spreading between the SE China-NW Palawan conjugate margins. The Eocene-Oligocene South China Sea rifting initiates in a heterogeneous and likely thermally un-equilibrated lithosphere formed by the Mesozoic Yenshanian orogeny. Gravity and joint inversion methods confirm lateral variation of basement densities across the conjugate margins. Lithospheric and basement heterogeneities induced a rifting style characterized by a series of highly thinned rift basins associated with extensional faulting soling out at various crustal levels. Final rifting in late Eocene triggered decompression melting forming mid-ocean ridge type magmatism, which emplaced within thinned continental crust as deep intrusions and shallow extrusive rocks. This initial magmatic activity was concomitant with continued deformation of continental crust by extensional faulting. Integrated analysis of seismic reflection profiles and gravity anomaly data combined with deep-sea boreholes accurately locate the continent-ocean boundary. We show that the initial igneous crust, continentward of oceanic magnetic anomaly C10n, is asymmetric in width and in morphology for the conjugate margins. The wider and faulted newly accreted domain on the SE China side indicates that magmatic accretion is associated with tectonic faulting during the formation of initial oceanic lithosphere. We suggest that deformation was not symmetrically distributed between the conjugate margins during the initiation of seafloor spreading but evolved asymmetrically until the stabilisation of the spreading ocean ridge around C10n. The analysis of the South China Sea breakup reveals a transient interplay between faulting, magmatic budget and extension rates during the formation of the continent-ocean transition and initial emplacement of igneous crust.

Abstract

Red luminescent and superparamagnetic &beta, NaY0.8Eu0.2F4@&gamma, Fe2O3 nanoparticles, made of a 70 nm-sized &beta, NaY0.8Eu0.2F4 single crystal core decorated by a 10 nm-thick polycrystalline and discontinuous &gamma, Fe2O3 shell, have been synthesized by the polyol process. Functionalized with citrate ligands they show a good colloidal stability in water making them valuable for dual magnetic resonance and optical imaging or image-guided therapy. They exhibit a relatively high transverse relaxivity r2 = 42.3 mM&minus, 1&middot, s&minus, 1 in water at 37 &deg, C, for an applied static magnetic field of 1.41 T, close to the field of 1.5 T applied in clinics, as they exhibit a red emission by two-photon excited fluorescence microscopy. Finally, when brought into contact with healthy human foreskin fibroblast cells (BJH), for doses as high as 50 &micro, g&middot, mL&minus, 1 and incubation time as long as 72 h, they do not show evidence of any accurate cytotoxicity, highlighting their biomedical applicative potential.

Abstract

The stretching of continental lithosphere results in asthenospheric upwelling, raising of isotherms, melting during decompression and eventually seafloor spreading. The thermal maturity of overlying sedimentary organic matter from these settings would be expected to be distinctly altered by these processes, however this is still poorly constrained and quantitatively unexplored. International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expeditions 367–368 cored sediments at the Continent Ocean Transition (COT) on the Northern Margin of the South China Sea (SCS). From two settings at the South East China COT we measured and modelled thermal maturity in pre-/syn- to post-rift sediments making use of a range of thermal maturity parameters. Various heat-flow evolutionary scenarios were investigated, with notable jumps in thermal maturity for sediments corresponding to different depositional packages. In order to match observations of thermal maturity, it was found that the deeper and likely pre-rift sediments were heated to temperatures as high as 200 °C during initial breakup. Achieving this temperature for the deeper sediments requires that significant additional heat be imparted at shallow depths (e.g. exposure to at least the far-field effects of a magmatic intrusion or subsurface expressions of volcanism). The post-rift sediments have lower thermal maturities which are likely due to limited burial and the absence of late post-rift magmatism. The comparison of the SE China COT with other margin examples highlights some parameters controlling the thermal evolution and its record.

Abstract

“La Muette” is an eighteenth-century hunting lodge located in the forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France. This study consisted in the implementation of multidisciplinary analytical tools to characterize the fungal biocontamination of woods inside the monument. The fungal colonization was first mapped by macroscopic visual observation of all the rooms. Brown rot and white rot present in different rooms and fruiting bodies of Serpula lacrymans were observed on the first and second floors in localized areas. At the same time, air sampling was carried out, and the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) specific to the activity of fungi were analysed by gas chromatography. The analysis of the VOCs confirmed the presence of active developments of moulds and S. lacrymans in the pavilion. Wood samples were collected from areas with visible fungal colonization and subjected to culturing, extraction of DNA and analysis of the ITS sequences after PCR amplification. Culturing and microscopic observation revealed the presence of several moulds: Penicillium sp., Cladosporium sp., Acremonium sp., Humicola sp., Rhizopus sp. and Mucor sp. Isolates not identified by this approach were identified by analysing ITS sequences as Trichoderma atroviride, Engyodontium album and Umbelopsis isabellina. The presence of additional Ascomycota (Acremonium charticola, Aspergillus conicus, Chaetomium elatum, Lecanicillium sp.) and of the Basidiomycota Coprinellus aff. radians was revealed after DNA extraction, amplification and analysis of ITS sequences directly on wood samples. In conclusion, a high fungal diversity including moulds, S. lacrymans and C. aff. radians was demonstrated in association with altered wood in the monument.

Abstract

International audience; The Aerosol Assisted Catalytic Chemical Vapor Deposition method allows the controlled growth of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotubes carpets (VACNT) on conductive substrates[1][2]. This process has been optimized for the growth of dense VACNT at low temperature (580 to 615°C) on aluminium foils, leading to a single-step process that meets industrial requirements to the development of low cost, highly conducting and light ultracapacitor electrodes[3]. VACNT can be used as a support for deposition of pseudocapacitive materials such as electronic conducting polymer (ECP). An electrodeposition of poly(3-methylthiophene) on VACNT was developed to improve the capacitance[4]. Homogenous deposition of ECP was achieved all along the carpet by pulsed chronoamperometry. To keep improving performances, our approach consists in modifying the properties of the VACNT by doping the carbon nanotubes with heteroatoms. Nitrogen doping should provide opportunities to increase the capacitance owing to the oxidation of the nitrogen sites and also the specific surface, in similar conditions of densities and diameters, because of their bamboo shape[5]. The wettability and electric conductivity should be improved by the doping[6][7]. The growth of nitrogen doped VACNT was achieved at 850°C on Si substrates by using ethylenediamine as N and C source. Such carpets exhibit a density of 4.10$^{10}$ NTC/cm$^2$ of few walled nanotubes and a N content of 4.5% at (XPS). Their storage capacity will be presented

Abstract

International audience; The South China Sea margins represent a critical natural laboratory to study the processes and parameters controlling the rift-to-drift transition. High quality seismic data previously suggested the occurrence of a relatively sharp transition between the continental and oceanic domains, a hypothesis recently validated by the results of the IODP Expedition 367&368 drilled in the northern South China Sea distal margin. Drilling results in this transition cored Mid-Ocean Ridge type basaltic basement (Site U1502), while its lateral equivalent showed continental affinities (Site U1499). Seismic data document the lateral evolution of this narrow transition zone (∼15 to 25 km wide) and tectono-magmatic context related to breakup. A short-period magmatic event occurred during the latest stage of continental rifting and intruded the edge of the thinned continental crust, triggering crustal breakup and onset of steady-state seafloor spreading. The architecture of the transitional domain documented in this work is in marked contrast with those interpreted as either magma-starved or magma-rich at breakup time, suggesting that the continental margin of the SCS is intermediate between the classical end-member magmatic archetypes. We propose that the magmatic event triggering continental breakup is related to decompression melting linked to the ascending asthenosphere. Abstract

The development of value-added materials from by-product of the steel-making process can promote sustainability in construction to move towards a circular economy. The use of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel slag as heavyweight coarse aggregate to develop sustainable radiation shielding concrete could provide both technical and economic benefits with less environmental impact. This contribution investigates the behaviour at high temperature of a sustainable radiation shielding concrete. Thermal behaviour of EAF slag concrete was compared to another heavyweight concrete made of barite aggregates and to a normal-weight concrete. On one hand, the thermal stability of the three different aggregates was determined via simultaneous Thermogravimetry and Differential Scanning Calorimetry analyses and visual observations after 10 °C/min heating. On the other hand, the evolution of thermal conductivity of concretes during heating, the residual mechanical properties and the assessment of potential spalling occurrence were investigated. Stereo-microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope pictures provide additional explanations by showing the paste-aggregate interface after heating at 450 °C. The results indicated that EAF concrete displayed less strength reduction at increasing temperature. This improved behaviour is attributed to both the strong bond between the paste and the aggregates, and the better thermal behaviour of the EAF slag aggregates compared to barite aggregates.

Abstract

International audience; Actuation and sensing with electroactive polymers should be a chance for flexible MEMS but their micromachining and integration are still not mature. Some innovative materials and microfabrication processes are still expected. In this paper, a first full elaboration of polymeric microtransducers (MTs) including integration and operation has been described. The fabrication process relies on commercially available poly(3,4-ethyledioxy-thiophene): poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) conductive ink, onto flexible SU-8 photoresist microchip. Batch-fabrication of complex flexible monolithic units comprising individually addressable MTs of different shapes, is demonstrated. The resulting polymeric MTs show both very promising bending actuation and strain sensing properties in open-air. Remarkably, the microfabrication process did not impact the performances compared to material fabricated with laser cutting. This work paves the way for flexible MEMS development for soft microrobotics, microfluidics in medical and spatial applications.
