The objective of this study was to evaluate inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (IFH) lesions and oral normal mucosa (NM) initially with histopathological exam and then using micro-FTIR spectroscopy to analyse the samples. Eleven IFH and 11 NM samples were analysed at five different points to cover the largest area possible by the micro-FTIR technique. Bands were observed between 970 and 1743 cm−1 which corresponded to different structural components like collagen, lipids, fatty acids, proteins and amino acids. Spectral bands were more intense mostly for IFH lesions, including collagen bands, which are an important component of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia. This study demonstrated that differentiation in the inflammatory tissue was observed in FTIR spectral differences, in terms of biochemical composition. The Digital Radiography is taking place in several sectors, e.g., the medical, aerospace, security, automotive, etc. In addition to representing a technological trend, it has been demonstrated that digital radiography offers a series of benefits in terms of productivity, sensitivity, environmental aspects, image treatment tools, cost reduction, etc. If one weld seam to be inspected is from a serried product, as example a pipe, the best option to be implemented is the Flat Panel Detector with this equipment is possible to reduce the obtaining digital radiographic images in place of films and reducing the inspection cycle time due to its high degree of automation. In the experiments described in this paper this new technique was tested and the results were compared with those obtained by the conventional radiography. The welded specimens were prepared using the submerged-arc welding process and small artificial cracks of the most varied dimensions, present in the specimens, were used to establish a comparison of the sensitivities presented by the techniques employed After conducting several experiments, the digital method presented the highest sensitivity to the wire-type Image Quality Indicator (IQI) and in the detection of small defects, leading to the conclusion that the use of digital radiography using the flat-panel detector offers advantages over the conventional technique [1, 2]. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of a toothpaste containing calcium silicate/sodium phosphate/fluoride associated or not to the boost serum (BS) against erosive tooth wear (ETW) on enamel and dentin. METHODOLOGY: Bovine enamel and dentin specimens were subjected to an erosion-abrasion cycling model (1% citric acid - pH 3.6 -2 min / artificial saliva - 60 min, 4×/day, 5 days). Toothbrushing was performed for 15 s (2 min exposed to slurry), 2×/day, with the toothpastes (n=10): control without fluoride (Weleda), Arg/Ca/MFP (Colgate Pro-Relief), Si/PO4/MFP (Regenerate-Unilever), and Si/PO4/MFP/BS (Si/PO4/MFP with dual BS - Advanced Enamel Serum-Unilever). The effect of treatments on the eroded tissues was assessed by surface microhardness in the first day, and surface loss (SL) resulting from ETW was evaluated by profilometry (μm) after three and five days. Additional dentin specimens (n=5/group) were subjected to 20,000 brushing cycles to verify the abrasivity of the toothpastes. Data were subjected to ANOVA and correlation tests (5%). RESULTS: For enamel, no difference in microhardness was observed among the treated groups, and similar SL was obtained after 5 days. For dentin, Si/PO4/MFP/BS resulted in higher microhardness values, but none of the groups presented significantly lower SL than the control. There was no significant correlation between SL and abrasiveness. CONCLUSION: The calcium silicate/sodium phosphate toothpaste and serum increased microhardness of eroded dentin, but they did not significantly reduce enamel and dentin loss compared to the non-fluoride control toothpaste. The abrasiveness of the toothpastes could not predict their effect on ETW. This article presents a bibliometric analysis on the Lean System over the period ranging from 2006 to 2017, showing the evolution of the publications over the years, the number of publications per country, the main journals, the most prolific authors, the most used keywords, and eventually barriers for the implementation of the Lean System. The greatest growth of publication rate occurred from 2014 to 2015. The countries with the most contribution have been the United Kingdom, the United States, and Sweden. The publications have been concentrated primarily in twelve journals. The bibliometric map of keywords presented them grouped into six clusters. Several underlying factors like technical and managerial aspects, planning, and leadership can explain the main barriers for the implementation of the Lean System. According to the literature, the understanding of such barriers is the best way to reduce the implementation-time and reach profitability and competitiveness. Therefore, the main contribution of this work is to make the evolution and importance of publications in this area are better known, helping organizations in the knowledge of the Lean System implementation barriers present in the literature, and in reformulating the curricula of undergraduate and postgraduate in disciplines related to Lean System. Finally, a future scientometric analysis on the subject is suggested, covering the analysis of evolution of publications, scientific journal, and authors distributions, by means of bibliometric laws, like those by Price, Bradford and Lotka, respectively. resumo: Este artigo apresenta uma análise bibliométrica sobre o Sistema Lean no período de 2006 a 2017, mostrando a evolução das publicações ao longo dos anos, o número de publicações por país, os principais periódicos, os autores mais prolíficos, as palavras-chave mais usadas e, eventualmente, as barreiras para a implementação do Sistema Lean. O maior número de publicações ocorreu entre 2014 e 2015. Os países com maior contribuição foram o Reino Unido, os Estados Unidos e a Suécia. As publicações foram concentradas principalmente em doze periódicos. O mapa bibliométrico das palavras-chave apresentou um agrupamento em seis clusters. As principais barreiras encontradas podem ser explicadas por vários fatores subjacentes, relacionados à aspectos técnicos e gerenciais, de planejamento e liderança. De acordo com a literatura, o entendimento de tais barreiras é a melhor maneira de reduzir o tempo de implementação e alcançar lucratividade e competitividade. Portanto, a principal contribuição deste trabalho é fazer com que a evolução e importância das publicações nessa área sejam mais conhecidas, auxiliando as organizações no conhecimento das barreiras de implementação do Sistema Lean presentes na literatura, e auxiliar na reformulação dos currículos de graduação e pós-graduação em disciplinas relacionadas ao Sistema Lean. Por fim, sugere-se uma futura análise cientométrica sobre o assunto, abrangendo a análise da evolução das publicações, periódicos científicos e distribuições de autores, por meio de leis bibliométricas, como as de Price, Bradford e Lotka, respectivamente.

We provide data about species composition, cumulative species curves and ecological indexes. Additionally, we compared different sampling techniques used for cryptic fauna studies. The samples were carried out quarterly for one year, using Artificial Refuge Substrate (ASR) for the passive capture and SCUBA diving for active capture. A total of 323 individuals were sampled with 17 species recorded, 13 in Vitória Island and 12 in Laje de Santos. Alpheus formosus and Cuapetes americanus were dominant in both areas and recognized as key-species for the community. Using two-sampling methods is highly recommended for future studies due to the fact that small and translucent species were obtained with ARS and large and colourful specimens were collected during SCUBA diving expeditions. An alien shrimp from the genus Athanas was registered for the first time in a protected area in Brazil. Additionally, all these results/data are important for future management and work plans in Brazilian protected areas since decapod crustaceans are an extremely important fauna group in any subtidal ecosystem. Este trabalho tem como objetivo verificar as características do gênero miniconto, a partir de seus aspectos sociocomunicativos, composicionais e dialógicos. Os problemas que motivaram esta pesquisa foram a ausência de divulgação do gênero miniconto no cenário escolar e a falta de material teórico que caracterize o gênero, a partir da perspectiva bakhtiniana. Do ponto de vista teórico, este trabalho se fundamenta a partir das concepções bakhtinianas de linguagem e dos estudos de caracterização de gênero discursivo.

Photovoltaics is amongst the most important technologies for renewable energy sources, and plays a key role in the development of a society with a smaller environmental footprint. Key parameters for solar cells are their energy conversion efficiency, their operating lifetime, and the cost of the energy obtained from a photovoltaic system compared to other sources. The optimization of these aspects involves the exploitation of new materials and development of novel solar cell concepts and designs. Both theoretical modeling and characterization of such devices require a comprehensive view including all scales from the atomic to the macroscopic and industrial scale. The different length scales of the electronic and optical degrees of freedoms specifically lead to an intrinsic need for multiscale simulation, which is accentuated in many advanced photovoltaics concepts including nanostructured regions. Therefore, multiscale modeling has found particular interest in the photovoltaics community, as a tool to advance the field beyond its current limits. In this article, we review the field of multiscale techniques applied to photovoltaics, and we discuss opportunities and remaining challenges. © T. They depend upon gastropod shells for protection, with the latter influencing growth rate, mortality and reproduction. The present work aims to provide information about the biology and reproduction of Pagurus brevidactylus in a conservation area in Brazilian southeastern littoral. The material was sampled through active searching by SCUBA diving and refuge traps. We analyzed population structure, fecundity, reproductive output (RO), reproductive periodicity and shell utilization for P. brevidactylus. In total, 54 males, 18 non-ovigerous females, 34 ovigerous females and 10 juveniles were sampled. The females had a fecundity of 69.5 +/- 65 eggs, which was lower than that compared to other populations from different localities. The RO ranged from 1.48% to 63.04%, with a mean of 26.75 +/- 18.23%. There was a positive relationship between egg number and female size. The animals had continuous reproduction, but they reached smaller maximum sizes when compared with other populations. The shell occupation pattern was also different from other localities, the shells of Phrontis alba being the most occupied; this shell has a smaller size when compared to others that P. brevidactylus occupies in other localities. Therefore, P. alba could have had limited the growth and reproduction of P. brevidactylus. The aim of this study was to identify whether exposure of pregnant women to air pollutants contributes towards low birth weight and which sex is more affected. DESIGN AND SETTING: Longitudinal study using data on newborns from mothers living in São José do Rio Preto (SP) who were exposed to air pollutants in 2012-2013. METHODS: A hierarchical model on three levels was built using maternal and newborn variables and environmental concentrations of particulate matter, ozone and nitrogen dioxide in quartiles. Preterm newborns, twins and newborns with birth defects were excluded and exposure windows of 30, 60 and 90 days before delivery were considered. RESULTS: 8,948 newborns were included: 4,491 males (50.2%) and 4,457 females (49.8%); 301 newborns presented low birth weight (3.4%). The mean weight differed between males (3281.0 g) and females (3146.4 g) (P < 0.001). Exposure to ozone was significantly associated with low birth weight in both sexes in the 30-day window (odds ratio, OR = 1.38) and 90-day window (OR = 1.48); and among females, in the 30-day window (OR = 1.58) and 90-day window (OR = 1.59). Exposure to particulate matter had a paradoxical protective effect. No association was found among male newborns. CONCLUSIONS: Female newborns showed greater susceptibility to maternal exposure to air pollutants. Studies on low birth weight in relation to maternal exposure to air pollutants should deal with males and females separately. The objectives of this study were to assess dentists'knowledge of EC and to disseminate information on the technique. The study included 240 dentists from the city of Anapolis (Goias, Brazil) who answered a questionnaire regarding demographic data and data relating to EC and who then received information on the technique. The data revealed that 26.92% of the dentists did not know about EC. Among those who reported knowledge of EC, 33.91% did not know the procedures for performing the technique, and 85.38% had no experience with EC. In addition, 54.09% of the answers regarding the instrument used to collect the material and 56.82% of the answers concerning suitable fixatives were inappropriate. Although 73.02% of the dentists adequately identified the pathologies for which EC is recommended, it was concluded that the respondents had poor knowledge of EC. There is a need to increase dentists'awareness of this subject and of EC's use in diagnostic practices. The objective here was to estimate the effect of exposure to particulate matter (such as PM2.5) on hospitalizations due to certain respiratory diseases among residents in Volta Redonda (RJ). DESIGN AND SETTING: Ecological time series study using data from Volta Redonda (RJ). METHODS: Data on hospital admissions among residents of Volta Redonda (RJ), between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2012, due to pneumonia, acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis and asthma, were analyzed. Daily data on PM2.5 concentrations were estimated through the CCATT-BRAMS model. The generalized additive Poisson regression model was used, taking the daily number of hospitalizations to be the dependent variable and the PM2.5 concentration to be the independent variable, with adjustment for temperature, relative humidity, seasonality and day of the week, and using lags of zero to seven days. Excess hospitalization and its cost were calculated in accordance with increases in PM2.5 concentration of 5 μg/m3. RESULTS: There were 752 hospitalizations in 2012; the average concentration of PM2.5 was 17.2 μg/m3; the effects of exposure were significant at lag 2 (RR = 1.017), lag 5 (RR = 1.022) and lag 7 (RR = 1,020). A decrease in PM2.5 concentration of 5 μg/m3 could reduce admissions by up to 76 cases, with a decrease in spending of R$ 84,000 a year. CONCLUSION: The findings from this study provide support for implementing public health policies in this municipality, which is an important steelmaking center. Part 12: Agrifood Supply Chains; International audience; Farming is very important for the development of a country economy and, in Brazil, cattle (meat and milk) is one of the most important sectors of this segment. This paper aims to develop a conceptual framework to identify the key characteristics of the Short Food Supply Chain and, moreover, propose a model for the implementation of sustainability in the sector of small milk producers and dairy products. The research presents data from small producers located in Paraná, Brazil and utilizes the better condition of Italian producers in the Veneto region as a benchmarking to identify opportunities for improvement by adopting the concept of Short Food Supply Chain. The conclusion of the analysis showed that there are significant gains for small farmers with the adoption of the proposed model because it solves several issues that currently hinder the development of the sector.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2012-11-01 The aim of this study was to analyze the color alterations performed by the CIE L*a*b* system in the digital imaging of shade guide tabs, which were obtained photographically according to the automatic and manual modes. This study also sought to examine the observers' agreement in quantifying the coordinates. Four Vita Lumin Vaccum shade guide tabs were used: A3.5, B1, B3 and C4. An EOS Canon digital camera was used to record the digital images of the shade tabs, and the images were processed using Adobe Photoshop software. A total of 80 observations (five replicates of each shade according to two observers in two modes, specifically, automatic and manual) were obtained, leading to color values of L*, a* and b*. The color difference (AE) between the modes was calculated and classified as either clinically acceptable or unacceptable. The results indicated that there was agreement between the two observers in obtaining the L*, a* and b* values related to all guides. However, the B1, B3, and C4 shade tabs had AE values classified as clinically acceptable (Delta E = 0.44, Delta E = 2.04 and Delta E = 2.69, respectively). The A3.5 shade tab had a AE value classified as clinically unacceptable (Delta E = 4.17), as it presented higher values for luminosity in the automatic mode (L* = 54.0) than in the manual mode (L* = 50.6). It was concluded that the B1, B3 and C4 shade tabs can be used at any of the modes in digital camera (manual or automatic), which was a different finding from that observed for the A3.5 shade tab. The government communication in the digital environment, which provides ample opportunities for access to information and a capability of participation is the focus of this article. The aim of this paper is to propose analysis parameters for evaluation of official government communication in the digital environment. The research is characterized as exploratory, to propose a method to be tested for validation. The study design is bibliographical and qualitative. It was proposed parameters for analysis of official sites of the federation units, organized into five dimensions and thirty-three item analysis, and analysis parameters for evaluation of official profiles of the federation units in digital social networks, organized into six dimensions and thirteen items evaluation.; El acceso a la información es una condición previa para el desarrollo. La comunicación del Gobierno en el entorno digital, que ofrece amplias oportunidades para el acceso a la información y la capacidad de participación es el foco de este artículo. El objetivo de este trabajo es proponer parámetros de análisis para la evaluación de la comunicación oficial del gobierno en el entorno digital. La investigación se caracteriza por ser exploratoria, para proponer un método para hacerse la prueba de validación. El diseño del estudio es bibliográfica y cualitativa. A comunicação governamental em ambiente digital, que propicia possibilidades amplas de acesso à informação e uma potencialidade de participação é o enfoque desse artigo. O objetivo do artigo é propor parâmetros de análise para avaliação da comunicação governamental oficial em ambiente digital. A pesquisa caracteriza-se como exploratória, por propor um método a ser testado para validação. O delineamento da pesquisa é bibliográfico e qualitativo. Foram propostos parâmetros para análise de sítios oficiais das unidades da federação, organizados em cinco dimensões e trinta e três itens de análise, e parâmetros de análise para avaliação dos perfis oficiais de unidades da federação nas redes sociais digitais, organizados em seis dimensões e treze itens de avaliação.

International audience; This article aims to present characterize Bananal from the identification of its attractions in Estrada Real - Caminho Novo da Piedade, in the municipalities of Areias and Bananal within the territory referred to as Vale Histórico, to point actions taken or they may be for the development of that place, essentially covering the preservation of historic elements made compatible with the urban environment and contemporary tourism. After the decline of the coffee cycle in the Vale do Paraíba Paulista, places like farms, colonial ways and municipalities turn to the practice of tourism, exploring its history, its culture, its buildings, and its natural and cultural resources as an alternative to economic process of the region. On the historical, cultural and geographic affinities found between the towns of Areias and Bananal we chose to highlight them in the identification of the tourist attractions of the Estrada Real - Caminho Novo da Piedade. The research was characterized as descriptive exploratory with a qualitative approach, based on which we intend to study socioeconomic data and identify its tourist attractions, proposing to analyze the economy in the region delimited. The results indicate the absence of a consistent public policy for tourism development in relation to the potential presented in the region. It follows that only the elaboration and execution of public policy dedicated to promoting an integrated tourist circuit in the micro will produce benefits for the generation of employment and income and simultaneously, the preservation of historical heritage.; Este artículo tiene como objetivo presentar caracterizar la microrregión de Bananal de la identificación de los lugares de interés en Estrada Real - Caminho Novo da Piedade, en los municipios de Areias y Bananal en el territorio denominado Valle Histórico, para señalar las medidas adoptadas o puede ser para el desarrollo de ese lugar, cubriendo esencialmente la preservación de elementos históricos hechos compatibles con el medio ambiente urbano y el turismo contemporáneo. Después de la decadencia del ciclo de café en el Vale do Paraíba Paulista, lugares como granjas, caminos coloniales y municipios recurrir a la práctica del turismo, la exploración de su historia, su cultura, sus edificios, y sus recursos naturales y culturales como una alternativa a proceso económico de la región. En las afinidades históricas, culturales y geográficas que se encuentran entre los municipios de Arenas y Bananal elegimos para resaltarlos en la identificación de los lugares de interés turístico del Valle Histórico en Estrada Real - Caminho Novo da Piedade. La investigación se caracteriza por ser exploratorio descriptivo con abordaje cualitativo, con base en el cual tenemos la intención de estudiar los datos socioeconómicos e identificar sus atractivos turísticos, proponiendo para analizar la economía en la región delimitada. Los resultados indican la ausencia de una política pública consistente para el desarrollo del turismo en relación con el potencial se presenta en la región. De ello se desprende que sólo la elaboración y ejecución de políticas públicas dedicadas a la promoción de un circuito turístico integrado en el micro producirá beneficios para la generación de empleo y e.simultaneamente ingresos, la conservación del patrimonio histórico.; O presente artigo tem como objetivo apresentar caracterizar a Microrregião de Bananal a partir da identificação dos seus atrativos na Estrada Real - Caminho Novo da Piedade, nos municípios de Areias e Bananal dentro do território denominado como Vale Histórico, para apontar ações realizadas ou que possam vir a ser para o desenvolvimento daquele local, contemplando essencialmente a preservação de elementos históricos compatibilizados com o meio-ambiente urbano e a atividade turística contemporânea. A pesquisa caracterizou-se como exploratória descritiva com abordagem qualitativa, com base na qual se pretende estudar dados socioeconômicos além de identificar seus atrativos turísticos, propondo analisar a economia na região delimitada. Os resultados indicam ausência de uma política pública consistente para o desenvolvimento turístico em relação ao potencial apresentado na região. Conclui-se que somente a elaboração e efetivação de uma política pública dedicada a promover um circuito turístico integrado na microrregião produzirão benefícios para a geração de emprego e renda e, simultaneamente, a preservação do patrimônio histórico.

OBJETIVO: Identificar padrões de distribuição espacial para internações por infarto agudo do miocárdio (IAM) e DIC no Vale do Paraíba paulista. MÉTODOS: Realizou-se um estudo ecológico e exploratório utilizando técnicas de análise espacial dos dados de internação por infarto agudo do miocárdio e doença isquêmica do coração no Vale do Paraíba paulista entre 2004 e 2005. A análise estatística espacial utilizou uma base de dados georreferenciados de 35 municípios e rotinas de estatística espacial. Os dados de internações foram obtidos no Portal Datasus do Ministério da Saúde. As variáveis estudadas foram o número de internações por sexo masculino e feminino, na faixa etária acima dos 30 anos. Para avaliação da dependência espacial foram utilizados os coeficientes de autocorrelação global de Moran e o índice local de Moran. Também foram analisadas as correlações entre as variáveis pelo programa TerraView. O nível de significância foi de 5%. RESULTADOS: Foram identificadas 6.287 internações. As taxas foram de 161,66/100 mil. do total dos 35 municípios, 31,4% possuem taxas acima da média. Os coeficientes de Moran (global) mostraram significância estatística. Os índices locais mostraram agrupamentos, apontando um aglomerado com 9 municípios onde ocorre dependência espacial com dinâmicas próprias. CONCLUSÃO: A análise espacial permitiu identificar aglomerado espacial no médio Vale do Paraíba paulista para as internações por infarto agudo do miocárdio e doença isquêmica do coração, permitindo intervenção para redução das taxas. (Arq Bras Cardiol 2007;88(6):624-628) BACKGROUND: Ischemic heart diseases (IHD) are important causes of death in the Vale do Paraíba paulista. OBJECTIVE: To identify patterns of spatial distribution of hospitalizations for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and IHD in the Vale do Paraíba paulista. METHODS: This was an ecological study using exploratory spatial analysis of hospitalization data for acute myocardial infarction and ischemic heart disease in the Vale do Paraíba between 2004 and 2005. The statistical analysis used spatial georeferenced databases of 35 municipalities and spatial statistics routines. The admission data were obtained from the Portal Datasus of the Ministry of Health. The variables were the number of admissions for males and females aged over 30 years. To evaluate the spatial dependence we used the autocorrelation coefficients of Global Moran and Local Moran's index. We also analyzed the correlations between variables, using the TerraView program. The level of significance was 5%. RESULTS: Among 6,287 admissions, the rates were 161.66/100 thousand. of the total of 35 municipalities, 31.4% had rates above average. The coefficient of Moran (global) showed a statistical significance. Local indexes showed clusters, indicating a cluster of 9 municipalities in which there was spatial dependence with their own dynamics. CONCLUSION: In the mid Vale do Paraíba paulista, the spatial analysis identified spatial clusters of hospitalizations due to acute myocardial infarction and ischemic heart disease, allowing intervention to reduce rates. A complete randomized block experiment was set up in Brazil to test the hypothesis that large atmospheric deposits of NaCl in coastal regions might lead to a partial substitution of K by Na in Eucalyptus physiology and enhance tree growth. Treatments with application of 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 kmol K ha(-1) (K-1.5, K-3.0, 1(4.5, respectively) as KCl, 3.0 kmol K ha(-1) applied as K2SO4, 3.0 kmol Na ha(-1) (Na-3.0) as NaCl commercialized for cattle feeding, and a mixture of 1.5 kmol K + 1.5 kmol Na ha(-1) (K-1.5 + Na-1.5) were compared to a control treatment (C) with no K and Na applications. All the plots were fertilized with large amounts of the other nutrients. A positive effect of NaCl applications on the growth of E. grandis trees was observed. NaCl and KCl additions in treatments Na-3.0 and K-3.0 increased above-ground biomass by 56% and 130% three years after planting, respectively, in comparison with the C treatment. By contrast, accumulated litterfall up to age 3 years was not significantly modified. NaCl applications in the Na-3.0 treatment significantly increased Na accumulation in above-ground tree components but did not modify K accumulation, whatever the sampling age. A partial substitution of K by Na in tree physiology, as observed for various agricultural crops, might explain this behaviour. Our results suggest the possibility of applying inexpensive K fertilizers, which are less purified in Na, and explain why high yields are achieved without K fertilizer applications in areas with large dry depositions of marine aerosols. Losartan e PD123349 AT1 e AT2 (seletivos sem peptídeos antagonizam os receptores da angiotensina), bem como FK 409 (um doador de óxido nítrico), éster metílico da NW-nitro-L-arginina (L-NAME), um inibidor da óxido nítrico sintetase endotelial (eNOSI ) e 7-nitroindazol (7NI), um inibidor neuronal específico da óxido nítrico sintase (nNOSI) foi usado. A cepa Holtzman (Rattus norvergicus), com peso de 200 a 250 g, foi anestesiada com zoletil 50 mg kg-1 (cloridrato de tiletamina 125 mg e cloridrato de zolazepan 125 mg) no músculo quadríceps e cânula de aço inoxidável foi estereotaxicamente implantada em seu ventrículo lateral (LV). Os controles foram injetados com um volume de 0,5 mL de NaCl 0,15 M. A angiotensina II injetada no VE aumentou a PAM (19 ± 3 vs. controle 3 ± 1 mm Hg), que é potencializado pela injeção prévia de L-NAME no mesmo local 26 ± 2 mm Hg. O 7NI injetado antes do ANG II no VE também potencializou o efeito pressor do ANG II, mas com uma intensidade maior que o L-NAME de 32 ± 3 mm Hg. A FK 409 inibiu o efeito pressor da ANG II (6 ± 1 mm Hg). O losartan injetado no VE antes do ANG II influencia o efeito pressor do ANG II (8 ± 1 mm Hg). O PD 123319 diminuiu os efeitos pressores do ANG II (16 ± 1 mm Hg). Losartan injetado simultaneamente com FK 409 bloqueou o efeito pressor do ANG II (3 ± 1 mm Hg). O L-NAME produziu um aumento no efeito pressor da ANG II, pode ser devido à vasoconstrição local e de uma só vez pela inibição neuronal da NOS, mas o principal efeito é do 7-NIT um inibidor específico da nNOS. Os receptores antagonistas AT1 melhoram a produção e liberação de óxido nítrico (NO). Esses dados sugerem o envolvimento de NOS constitutiva e neuronal no controle da pressão arterial induzida centralmente por ANG II, evoluindo a vasoconstrição mediada pelo receptor AT1 e a vasodilatação mediada pelo receptor AT2. Estes resultados foram confirmados pelo experimento usando FK 409. The present study investigated the central role of angiotensin II and nitric oxide on arterial blood pressure (MAP) in rats. Losartan and PD123349 AT1 and AT2 (selective no peptides antagonists angiotensin receptors), as well as FK 409 (a nitric oxide donor), NW-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) a constituve nitric oxide synthase inhibitor endothelial (eNOSI) and 7-nitroindazol (7NI) a specific neuronal nitric oxide synthase inhibitor (nNOSI) were used. Holtzman strain, (Rattus norvergicus) weighting 200-250 g were anesthetized with zoletil 50 mg kg-1 (tiletamine chloridrate 125 mg and zolazepan chloridrate 125 mg) into quadriceps muscle anda stainless steel cannula was stereotaxically implanted into their Lateral Ventricle (LV). Controls were injected with a 0.5 μl volume of 0.15 M NaCl. Angiotensin II injected into LV increased MAP (19±3 vs. control 3±1 mm Hg), which is potentiated by prior injection of L-NAME in the same site 26±2 mm Hg. 7NI injected prior to ANG II into LV also potentiated the pressor effect of ANG II but with a higher intensity than L-NAME 32±3 mm Hg. FK 409 inhibited the pressor effect of ANG II (6±1 mm Hg). Losartan injected into LV before ANG II influences the pressor effect of ANG II (8±1 mm Hg). The PD 123319 decreased the pressor effects of ANG II (16±1 mm Hg). Losartan injected simultaneously with FK 409 blocked the pressor effect of ANG II (3±1 mm Hg). L-NAME produced an increase in the pressor effect of ANG II, may be due to local vasoconstriction and all at once by neuronal NOS inhibition but the main effect is of the 7-NIT an specific nNOS inhibitor. The AT1 antagonist receptors improve basal nitric oxide (NO) production and release. These data suggest the involvement of constitutive and neuronal NOS in the control of arterial blood pressure induced by ANG II centrally, evolving AT1 receptor-mediated vasoconstriction and AT2 receptor-mediated vasodilatation. O objetivo do estudo foi estimar a associação dessas internações com o aumento dos poluentes atmosféricos. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de estudo ecológico de séries temporais, realizado na cidade de São José dos Campos, SP, nos anos de 2000 e 2001. Foram utilizados dados diários sobre o número de internações por pneumonia, dados diários de poluentes (SO2, O3 e PM10) e de temperatura e umidade do clima. Foram estimadas as correlações entre as variáveis de interesse pelo coeficiente de Pearson. Para estimar a associação entre as internações por pneumonia e a poluição atmosférica, utilizaram-se modelos aditivos generalizados de regressão de Poisson. Foram estimados os acréscimos das internações por pneumonia para o intervalo interquartil para cada um dos poluentes estudados, com um intervalo de confiança de 95% RESULTADOS: Os três poluentes apresentaram efeitos defasados nas internações por pneumonia, iniciada três a quatro dias após a exposição e decaindo rapidamente. Na estimativa de efeito acumulado de oito dias observou-se ao longo desse período que para aumentos de 24,7 µg/m³ na concentração média de PM10 houve um acréscimo de 9,8% nas internações. CONCLUSÕES: O estudo confirma que o potencial deletério dos poluentes do ar sobre a saúde pode ser detectado, também, em cidades de médio porte. A magnitude do efeito foi semelhante ao observado na cidade de São Paulo. Além disso, mostra a elevada susceptibilidade das crianças aos efeitos adversos advindos da exposição aos contaminantes atmosféricos. OBJECTIVE: of the effects of air pollution on children's health, increased pneumonia admission rate is one of the most important. The study aimed at estimating the association between pneumonia admissions and increased air pollutants. METHODS: An ecological time-series study was carried out in the municipality of São José dos Campos, Southeastern Brazil, in the years 2000 and 2001. Daily records of pneumonia admissions, air pollutants (SO2, O3, and PM10) and weather conditions (temperature and humidity) were analyzed. The correlations between the study variables were estimated using Pearson's correlation. The associations between pneumonia and air pollutants were estimated using generalized additive Poisson regression models. The percentage increase (and their respective 95% CI) in pneumonia admission rate was estimated for the interquartile range of each air pollutant studied. RESULTS: The three pollutants analyzed presented lagged effects on pneumonia admission rate, beginning at lag 3 or 4 and lasting for no more than two days. The 8-day cumulative effect estimate showed that an increase of 24.7 mg/m³ in PM10 concentration increased pneumonia admission rate in 9.8%. CONCLUSIONS: The study corroborates that adverse health effects of air pollutants can be observed even in medium-sized cities. The magnitude of the effect was similar to that found in the city of São Paulo. Moreover, children are highly susceptible to air pollution exposure. Resultados: no ano de 2006, foram georreferenciados 691 casos de dengue (taxa de 864,2 casos/100 mil hab.); os índices de Moran e p-valores foram significativos nos meses de abril e maio (IM = 0,28, p=0,01; IM = 0,20, p=0,01) com densidades maiores nas regiões central, norte, nordeste e sul. Em 2011, foram geocodificados 654 casos (886,8 casos/100 mil hab.); os índices de Moran e p-valores foram significativos nos meses de março e abril (IM = 0,28, p=0,01; IM = 0,16, p=0,05) com densidades nas mesmas regiões de 2006. O índice de Moran global (IM) é uma medida global de autocorrelação espacial, que indica o grau de associação espacial no conjunto de informações a partir do produto em relação à média. O IM varia entre -1 e +1, e a ele pode ser atribuído um nível de significância (p-valor). O valor positivo aponta para uma autocorrelação espacial positiva ou direta. Conclusão: foi possível identificar padrões na distribuição espaço-temporal dos casos de dengue ocorridos no município de Cruzeiro, SP, e localizar os setores censitários onde a epidemia teve início e como evoluiu. Objective: to identify patterns in the spatial and temporal distribution of cases of dengue fever occurring in the city of Cruzeiro, state of Sao Paulo (SP).Methods: an ecological and exploratory study was undertaken using spatial analysis tools and data from dengue cases obtained on the SinanNet. The analysis was carried out by area, using the IBGE census sector as a unit. The months of March to June 2006 and 2011 were assessed, revealing progress of the disease. TerraView 3.3.1 was used to calculate the Global Moran's I, month to month, and the Kernel estimator.Results: in the year 2006, 691 cases of dengue fever (rate of 864.2 cases/100,000 inhabitants) were georeferenced; and the Moran's I and p-values were significant in the months of April and May (TM = 0.28; p = 0.01; I-M = 0.20; p = 0.01) with higher densities in the central, north, northeast and south regions. In the year 2011, 654 cases of dengue fever (rate of 886.8 cases/100,000 inhabitants) were georeferenced; and the Moran's I and p-values were significant in the months of April and May (I, = 0.28; p = 0.01; I-M = 0.16; p = 0.05) with densities in the same regions as 2006. The Global Moran's I is a global measure of spatial autocorrelation, which indicates the degree of spatial association in the set of information from the product in relation to the average. The I varies between -1 and +1 and can be attributed to a level of significance (p-value). The positive value points to a positive or direct spatial autocorrelation.Conclusion: we were able to identify patterns in the spatial and temporal distribution of dengue cases occurring in the city of Cruzeiro, SP, and locate the census sectors where the outbreak began and how it evolved. A busca pelo clareamento dentário como ferramenta estética para um sorriso harmônico cresceu acentuadamente na última década, comprovando a necessidade do paciente de se sentir belo, admirado e incluído, auxiliando em seu bem estar. Embora a cor do dente represente apenas um aspecto no conjunto dos determinantes da harmonia facial, ela representa um forte fator isolado por ser rapidamente percebida. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo relatar caso clínico de paciente com queixa de manchas em seus incisivos centrais superiores que comprometiam seu sorriso e lhe causavam prejuízos e desconforto em suas relações sociais e profissionais do cotidiano. Depending on the emotional significance for the individual it can change interpersonal relationships, causing profound changes in their patterns of self-acceptance and self-image, with profound effects on their self-esteem of the patient. The search for tooth whitening as cosmetic factor for a harmonic smile grew sharply in the last decade. Although the color of the tooth represents only one aspect in the set of determinants of facial harmony, it is a strong factor because it is quickly perceived. This study aims to report the clinical case of a patient with spots on their upper central incisors. For the patient these spots have compromised her smile, causing harm and discomfort in their everyday social and professional relationships. Dependiendo de la importancia emocional para el individuo puede cambiar las relaciones interpersonales, causando profundos cambios en sus patrones de autoaceptación y auto-imagen, con dramáticos efectos sobre la autoestima del paciente. La búsqueda de blanqueamiento dental como factor de cosmética para una sonrisa armónica creció bruscamente en la última década. Aunque el color del diente representa sólo un aspecto en el conjunto de los factores determinantes de la armonía facial, es un factor fuerte porque se percibe rápidamente. Este estudio tiene como objetivo informar sobre el caso clínico de un paciente con manchas en sus incisivos centrales superiores. Para isto, aplicou-se um formulário dirigido ao órgão representativo da classe apícola sobre aspectos produtivos e técnicos dos apicultores. Foram obtidas 14 amostras de mel de abelhas Apis mellifera africanizadas, acondicionadas em recipientes plásticos estéreis e encaminhadas ao Laboratório de Controle de Qualidade de Produtos Apícolas (CEA-UNITAU). Observou-se que a maioria dos apicultores possui de 50 a 100 colmeias (57,14%), 28,57% de 100 a 200 colmeias e 14,28% mais de 500 colmeias, sendo que 85,71% produzem de 30 a 50 kg mel/colmeia/florada. Todos utilizam a colmeia padrão Langstroth e 85,71% adquirem seus enxames por meio de captura. Com relação à qualidade físico-química do mel, observou-se que os teores de umidade variaram de 18,2% a 22,0%, com valor médio de 19,80±1,11; a atividade de água variou de 0,70 a 0,84 aw, com valor médio de 0,79±0,05aw;a acidez total foi de 24,91±8,99 meq/kg e o índice médio de hidroximetilfurfural foi de 16,32±17,88 meq/kg. Os resultados obtidos encontram-se dentro dos limites de qualidade estabelecidos pela legislação brasileira, exceto a atividade de água que excedeu o limite máximo de 0,65 aw. Os dados obtidos neste trabalho demonstram desenvolvimento da apicultura no Estado do Pernambuco e que o mel produzido apresenta boa qualidade. The present study had as objective contribute to the characterization of beekeeping in the Pernambuco State and evaluate the physical-chemical quality of the honeys produced in the region. For this, was applied a directed formulary to the representative organ of beekeeping class aboutthe productives and technicals aspects of beekeepers. Was obtained 14 samples of honey by Apis mellifera africanized, stored in sterile plastic vessels was sent to the Beekeeping Products Quality Control Laboratory (CEA-UNITAU). Was observed that the most of beekeepers have of 50 to 100 hives (57,14%), 28,57% of 100 to 200 hives and 14,28% more than 500 hives, being that 85,71% produce 30 to 50 kg honey/hives/flowering. All use the standard hive Langstroth and 85,71% obtain their swarm by capture. About the physical-chemical quality of the honey, was observed that moisture content varied from 18,2% to 22,0%, with mean value of 19,80±1,11; the water activity varied from 0,70 to 0,84 aw, with mean value of 0,79±0,05 aw; the total acidity was 24,91±8,99 meq/kg and the average index of hydroxymethylfurfural was 16,32±17,88 meq/kg. The results obtained are according to the quality limits established by the brazilian legislation, excepted the water activity that exceeded the maximum limit of 0,65 aw. The datasobtained in this paper shows the development of beekeeping in Pernambuco State and the honey presents nice quality. In order to better understand the ecology of the different growth phases of the stone crab, Menippe nodifrons, and provide information for conservation of the natural stocks, this study describes the utilization of different biogenic substrates by this species in the intertidal zone. Sampling was carried out by hand at Ubatuba, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Crabs were captured among rocks or in association with three different biogenic substrates: Phragmatopoma lapidosa, Sargassum cymosum and Schizoporella unicornis. In the laboratory, the substrates were sorted and scanned for specimens of M. nodifrons, which were separated and measured at their maximum carapace width (CW), and classified as juvenile or adult specimens. Sex ratio and size distribution of crabs were analyzed for each of the substrate types. A total of 686 specimens of M. nodifrons were obtained during the sampling, ranging in size between 2.4 and 82.5 mm CW. Different mean sizes were recorded in the different substrates (P < 0.05). The high prevalence of juveniles in the samples suggests that these microhabitats are fundamental for the juvenile development of M. nodifrons, as they provide refuge, protection and probably food for juveniles. Para comprender mejor la ecología de las diferentes fases de crecimiento de los cangrejos de piedra, Menippe nodifrons, y proporcionar información para la conservación de sus poblaciones naturales, se describe la utilización de los diferentes sustratos biogénicos, para esta especie en la zona intermareal. El muestreo se efectuó en Ubatuba, Estado de Sao Paulo, Brasil. Los cangrejos fueron capturados entre las rocas o en asociación con tres diferentes sustratos biogénicos: Phragmatopoma lapidosa, Sargassum cymosum y Schizoporella unicornis. En el laboratorio, los sustratos se clasificaron y analizaron en busca de especímenes de M. nodifrons, que fueron separados y medidos en el ancho máximo del caparazón (CW), y se clasificaron como juveniles o adultos. La proporción de sexos y la distribución de tamaño de los cangrejos se analizó para cada uno de los tipos de sustrato. Se obtuvo un total de 686 ejemplares de M. nodifrons, que variaron entre 2,4 y 82,5 mm CW. Se registraron tamaños medios significativamente diferentes en los distintos sustratos (P < 0,05). El alto número de juveniles en las muestras sugiere que estos microhábitats son fundamentales para el desarrollo juvenil de M. nodifrons, ya que proporcionan refugio, protección y, probablemente, alimentación para estos juveniles.

A complete randomized block design was installed in Brazilian eucalypt plantations to quantify the remobilizations of phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sodium (Na) within stem wood. Three treatments were studied: control with neither K nor Na addition (C), 3 kmol ha(-1) K applied (+K), and 3 kmol ha(-1) Na applied (+Na). Biomass and nutrient contents were measured in the stem wood of eight trees destructively sampled at 1, 2, 3 and 4 years after planting in each treatment and annual rings were localized on discs of wood sampled every 3 m in half of the trees. Chemical analyses and wood density measurements were performed individually for each ring per level and per tree sampled. Nutrient remobilizations in annual rings were calculated through mass balance between two successive ages. Our results show that nutrient remobilizations within stem wood were mainly source-driven. Potassium and Na additions largely increased their concentration in the outer rings as well as the amounts remobilized in the first 2 years after the wood formation. The amount of Na remobilized in annual rings was 15 % higher in +Na than in +K the fourth year after planting despite a 34 % higher production of stem wood in +K leading to a much higher nutrient sink. A partial substitution of K by Na in the remobilizations within stem wood might contribute to enhancing Eucalyptus grandis growth in K-depleted soils. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2013 Os principais objetivos deste estudo foram descrever a estrutura da comunidade de caranguejos anomuros e braquiúros que habitam recifes constituídos por colônias de Schizoporella unicornis, e fornecer uma ordenação das espécies mais importantes para esta comunidade. As coletas foram realizadas bimestralmente desde maio de 2003 até maio de 2004, no infralitoral rochoso da costa sudeste brasileira. A abundância e ocorrência relativas foram usadas para ordenar estas espécies em hierarquia de importância. Obteve-se um total de 2.018 indivíduos, distribuídos em 11 famílias, 22 gêneros e 31 espécies. Porcellanidae e Pilumnidae foram as famílias mais abundantes, compreendendo, respectivamente, cerca de 60% e 15% dos indivíduos amostrados. A ordenação das espécies indicou quatro grupos principais A, B, C e D, sendo o grupo A subdividido em dois. O subgrupo A1 contém 9 espécies, incluindo as espécies de maior importância ecológica para a comunidade, com relação à abundância e ocorrência. A grande abundância de caranguejos encontrados associados com S. unicornis é resultado de sua importância reconhecida durante o ciclo de desenvolvimento, e como abrigo e alimento para algumas espécies de decápodos. Estas observações revelam a importância de conservar as áreas ocupadas por essas colônias de briozoários, que parece ser um ambiente importante para a manutenção da biodiversidade local. The main goals of this investigation were to describe the community structure of anomuran and brachyuran crabs inhabiting reefs constituted by colonies of Schizoporella unicornis, and to provide a species importance ranking for this community. Collections were carried out on S. unicornis reefs at two-month intervals from May 2003 to May 2004, in the rocky sublittoral of the southeastern Brazilian coast. Relative abundance and occurrence were used to rank these species in the hierarchy importance. A total of 2,018 individuals were obtained, in 11 families, 22 genera and 31 species. Porcellanidae and Pilumnidae were the most abundant families, comprising respectively almost 60% and 15% of individuals sampled. The species ranking indicated four main groups A, B, C and D, with group A subdivided. Subgroup A1 contained 9 species, including the species of greatest ecological importance for community regarding abundance and occurrence. The great abundance of crabs associated with S. unicornis seems to be the result of its recognized importance during the crab developmental cycle, and as shelter and food for some Decapod species. These observations reveal the importance of conserving the areas occupied by these reef colonies, which appear to be an important environment for maintaining local biodiversity. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo evidenciar o estado da arte da obtenção de créditos de carbono via a utilização de veículos elétricos. Esta é uma das soluções para reduzir consideravelmente à emissão de GEE (Gases de Efeito Estufa), no caso as emissões de CO2, de NOx, SOx e CH4 (oriundo das reações termoquímicas da combustão de gasolina com o etanol) em veículos automotores. Para tanto foi feito o estudo quantitativo com base no levantamento de dados bibliográficos disponíveis e no desenvolvimento de cálculos básicos considerando afrota de automóveis do Brasileira e as emissões de CO2, gerada pela mesma. Explicitando assim o ganho considerável na qualidade do ar e na redução dos vetores causadores do efeito estufa, no caso da substituição da frota atual de automóveis a combustão de hidrocarbonetos de cadeia alifática, por uma frota eco eficiente constituída por veículos elétricos e/ou híbridos. Portanto, esse trabalho tem como foco apresentar a emissão de CO2 (dióxido de carbono) por representar a maior percentagem na emissão da combustão dos automóveis. This paper aims to highlight the state of the art of obtaining carbon credits through the use of electric vehicles. This is one of the solutions to significantly reduce the emission of GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions in the case of CO2, NOx, SOx, and CH4 (thermochemical reactions arising from the combustion of gasoline with ethanol) in motor vehicles. For this quantitative study was done based on the survey of bibliographic data available and the development of basic calculations considering the car fleet of the Country of Brazil and the CO2 emissions generated by the same. Thus explaining the considerable gain in air quality and reduction of vectors of greenhouse gases in the case of replacing the current fleet of vehicles combustion of hydrocarbon aliphatic chain, for an eco-efficient fleet consists of electric vehicles and / or hybrids.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2012-10-23 A new species of Pseudopaludicola is described from the state of Mato Grosso, western Brazil. The new species inhabits the transition zone between Brazilian Cerrado and Amazon rainforest in northern Mato Grosso, and is characterized by its medium size (snout-vent length 12-17 mm), lack of T-shaped terminal phalanges, toe tips not expanded laterally, presence of two antebrachial tubercles, and smooth upper eyelids. The advertisement call of the new species consists of a series composed of 11-74 non-pulsed notes. Mean dominant frequency is 3938 Hz. Each note presents a slight ascendant frequency modulation in its first half, and another ascendant modulation in its last half. The treatments were: A - Whole leaf cuttings, B - leaf cuttings with the top third cut off; C - with the lower third of the cuttings removed; D - with cuts on the primary vein of leaf cuttings, and E - poles with cuts on the leaf's secondary veins. The cuttings were immersed in distilled water for a period of 70 days. In all the treatments, the rooting was observed to occur in the region of the cut, or the place where the incision in the vein was. Current assay shows the feasibilities of Psychotria viridis leaf stalks and concludes that cuttings at the nerve ends highlight rooting in so far as the leaf stalks remain in permanent contact with the plant. Ao mesmo tempo, a atividade de auditoria vem sendo questionada quanto à sua capacidade de promover essa melhoria. Diante deste cenário, este artigo objetiva analisar fatores que afetam o processo de auditoria de certificação do sistema de gestão da qualidade, de modo a indicar oportunidades de melhoria das auditorias. A pesquisa é delimitada a auditorias no setor aeroespacial, que são orientadas pela NBR 15100. Foi realizada uma survey com auditores experientes nos anos de 2009 e 2010. São identificados fatores como comunicação, seleção da equipe, conhecimento do setor e os resultados mostram a existência de discrepâncias consideráveis entre o nível de importância e de aplicação desses fatores nas organizações auditadas. The audit of the quality management system is used by organizations to improve their performance through systematic evaluations of the processes. At the same time, the traditional audit system has been questioned about its ability to promote such improvement. Hence, this paper aims to analyze factors that affect the audit process for certification of quality management system to indicate opportunities for audit improvement. This research focuses on audits conducted within the aerospace sector based on the NBR 15100. A survey of experienced auditors was conducted in the years of 2009 and 2010. Some factors were identified (e.g. communication, team selection, industry expertise) and the results show that there are considerable discrepancies between the level of importance and implementation of those factors in the organizations audited. Instances of species introduction have been recorded worldwide, and the Brazilian coast is no exception. The present review provides an update of the geographical distribution of members of the brachyuran subfamily Mithracinae along the Brazilian coast. Of the 30 species of this subfamily recorded from Brazilian waters, the known geographical limits of more than 17 have been extended in recent decades. The records compiled here demonstrate the great importance of the Amazon River outflow on the geographical distribution of members of Mithracinae, acting as a biogeographical barrier for some species. Segundo dados do Ministério das Comunicações, apenas 176 emissoras são consideradas educativas do universo de 3 mil rádios existentes no Brasil. Nesse contexto, o estudo propõe estabelecer uma discussão sobre as experiências educativas obtidas a partir do rádio, considerando a cultura radiofônica brasileira, que privilegia concessões para grupos comerciais e de políticos religiosos. O desafio será avançar em direção a uma programação que alie entretenimento ao conteúdo educativo, e assim garanta um universo comum de competências comunicativas permitindo ao radiouvinte adulto sua real interação com o mundo que o cerca. A metodologia adotada no trabalho vai da pesquisa bibliográfica a partir de textos sobre o tema, bem como do resultado de observações práticas colhidas nas visitas as emissoras, e análise de programação. The concept of educational radio is present in the Brazilian Code of Broadcasting in 1963, valued by an Interministerial 1999.According to the Ministry of Communications, only 176 stations are considered educational universe of 3,000 existing radios in Brazil. In this context, the study proposes to establish a discussion on the educational experiences obtained from the radio, considering the Brazilian radio culture that favors concessions to trade groups and religious politicians. The challenge will be to move toward a program that combines educational content, entertainment, and thus ensures a common universe of communication skills enabling the adult radio listeners their actual interaction with the world around him. The methodology will work in the literature from texts on the subject, and the result of practical observations collected during visits to the broadcasters, programming and analysis. MÉTODOS: foi um estudo ecológico e exploratório com dados do Sistema de Informações de Saúde sobre nascidos vivos de 2004 e utilizando técnicas de geoprocessamento. Foram estimadas as autocorrelações espaciais das variáveis: parto cesáreo, escolaridade materna, baixo peso ao nascer, escore de Apgar de cinco minutos, prematuridade, número de consultas e mães adolescentes, além do mapa com o índice de desenvolvimento humano. Foi utilizada a estatística I de Moran para detecção de agregados de eventos no espaço, pelo programa TerraView 3.1.3 (desenvolvido pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais - INPE e de acesso público). Foram construídos mapas espaciais com estas variáveis e estimados os coeficientes de correlação de Pearson. RESULTADOS: os resultados mostraram que as proporções de nascidos vivos de mães com escolaridade acima de primeiro grau e de cesáreas, apresentaram padrão espacial visualmente identificável e autocorrelação espacial significativa. O baixo peso ao nascer, a prematuridade, o índice de Apgar, o número de consultas de pré-natal e o de mães adolescentes apresentaram padrão espacial aleatório, demonstrando que, nesta escala de análise, estes indicadores não discriminaram grupos de risco, apesar do seu inquestionável valor preditivo para morbimortalidade infantil em nível individual. Hill ex Maiden) leaf traits and tree growth Were Studied over 3 years after the establishment of two adjacent complete randomized block designs in Southern Brazil. In a nitrogen (N) input experiment, a treatment with the application of 120 kg N ha(-1) was compared to a control treatment without N addition, and in I potassium (K) input experiment a control treatment without K addition was compared to a treatment with the application of 116 kg K ha(-1). Young leaves Were tagged 9 months after planting to estimate the effect of N and K fertilizations oil leaf lifespan. Leaf mass, specific leaf area and nutrient concentrations were measured oil a composite sample per plot every 28 days Until the last tagged leaf fell. Successive inventories, destructive sampling of trees and leaf litter fall collection made it possible to assess the effect of N and K fertilization oil the dynamics of biomass accumulation in above-ground tree components. Whilst the effects of N fertilization oil tree growth Only Occurred in the first 24 months after planting, K fertilization increased the above-ground net primary production from 4478 to 8737 g m(-2) over the first 36 months after planting. A freqüência dominante do canto de anúncio foi positivamente correlacionada com o CRC das espécies: as espécies pequenas vocalizaram em uma freqüência mais alta e as maiores vocalizaram em uma freqüência mais baixa. A similaridade nos parâmetros espectrais e temporais do canto de anúncio foi alta entre 94% das espécies registradas. A similaridade no uso do sítio de vocalização foi baixa, apenas 22% das espécies apresentaram alta sobreposição, apesar de cerca de metade das espécies terem sido generalistas no uso de sítio de vocalização. Analisando conjuntamente a similaridade no uso de sítio de vocalização, no hábitat e nos parâmetros do canto de anúncio, a proporção de espécies com alta sobreposição diminui de 94% para 11%, correspondente à sobreposição entre um único par de espécies: Dendropsophus elianeae e D. minutus. Espécies com sobreposição no sítio de vocalização apresentaram segregação nos parâmetros acústicos e, espécies com sobreposição nos parâmetros acústicos tenderam a partilhar sítio de vocalização. Esse resultado sugere a ocorrência de complementaridade de nicho, pois as espécies que ocuparam uma posição similar em uma dimensão tenderam a diferir em outra dimensão. A homogeneidade estrutural dos corpos d'água, a severidade climática da região e o elevado grau de conversão do ambiente natural em áreas de cultivo limitam a abundância das populações e a riqueza de espécies. A baixa sobreposição no sítio de vocalização está, provavelmente, associada a insaturação das comunidades amostradas. The calling site and the acoustic parameters of the advertisement call were determined for 18 anuran species in six ponds in the northwest region of São Paulo State. The dominant frequency of the advertisement call was positively correlated with the CRC of the species: small size species vocalized in a higher frequency, whereas larger species vocalized in a lower frequency. The similarity in the spectral and temporal parameters of the advertisement call was high among 94% of the recorded species. The similarity on calling site was low; only 22% of species presented high overlap, in spite of about a half of the species have been generalist in calling site use. Analysing simultaneously the similarity on calling site, habitat and advertisement call parameters, the proportion of species with high overlap decreased from 94 to 11%, corresponding to the overlap between a single pair of species: Dendropsophus elianeae and D. minutus. The species that overlap in calling site presented segregation in acoustic parameters, and those that overlap in acoustic parameters tended to partition the calling site. This result suggests the occurrence of niche complementarity, since species that occupied a similar position in one dimension tended to differ in another dimension. The structural homogeneity of ponds, the climatic severity of the region and the high degree of habitat loss restrict the abundance of population and the species richness of the anuran assemblages. The low overlap on the calling site is probably associated with the insaturation of the sampled communities. Os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir que as embalagens de polipropileno transparentes podem ser empregadas para o ensacamento de frutos de pessegueiro, uma vez que as mesmas possibilitam a visualização da coloração dos frutos no momento da colheita, não comprometem o desenvolvimento da coloração dos mesmos e apresentam facilidade no manuseio. The trial was carried out in a tree-year-old peach crop. The cultivar 'Aurora 2' was conducted in a modern vase system with 6 m between rows and 4 m between plants. The experimental design followed randomized blocks with 15 treatments, 8 replications and 16 fruits per treatment. As hipóteses de que os fatores ambientais foram diferentes entre as estações do ano e profundidades foram testadas por ANOVAs. A dependência estatística entre as biomassas de peixes (variável resposta) e as biomassas de camarões (covariável) nas três regiões, foi testada por um modelo de ANCOVA. Para quantificar as relações entre as biomassas de cada espécie foi utilizada a CCA. A importância das estações do ano e das regiões no resultado da CCA foi avaliada pelo teste de Kruskal-Wallis e da profundidade pelo teste de Spearman. Nas estações do ano, as temperaturas e salinidades foram significativamente diferentes, o que não ocorreu com matéria orgânica (MO) e o diâmetro médio do sedimento (phi = fi). Foram amostrados 378.618 g de peixes e 79.338 g de camarões, com maiores capturas no inverno e nas menores profundidades. em Caraguatatuba foram coletadas as maiores biomassas de ambos os grupos e a correlação entre as capturas de peixes e de camarões foi negativa. Já nas demais regiões, a correlação foi positiva. Assim, os dados de Caraguatatuba foram retirados do modelo final da ANCOVA, onde 47% da variabilidade na biomassa dos peixes Sciaenidae pôde ser explicada pela presença dos camarões Penaeoidea. Xiphopenaeus kroyeri foi o único fator importante na distribuição de Sciaenidae no eixo 1, enquanto o eixo 2 evidenciou indiretamente o gradiente de profundidade. Os resultados sugerem que, possivelmente, muitas espécies de peixes busquem as mesmas áreas de ocorrência dos camarões em função dos fatores abióticos ou para utilizá-los como recurso alimentar. To study the relationships among Sciaenidae fish and Penaeoidea shrimp biomass, fieldwork was carried out in the north coast of São Paulo state, Brazil, during the four seasons of 2001. Samples were collected in transects from different depths at Ubatuba, Caraguatatuba, and São Sebastião cities. Water and sediment were collected from each transect. The hypotheses that the environmental factors were different among the seasons and depths were tested by ANOVAs. The statistical dependence among the biomasses of fishes (response variable) and the biomasses of shrimps (covariable) in the three sections was tested by an ANCOVA model. CCA was used to quantify the relationships among each species biomass. The seasons and sections important at the CCA results were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis test and depth by Spearman s test. The temperatures and salinities were significantly different among seasons but organic matter and phi were not. A total of 378,618 g of fish and 79,338 g of shrimp were collected and the majority was captured during the winter and in shallow transects. The greatest biomass of both groups was captured at Caraguatatuba and the correlation between fish and shrimp captures was negative. A positive correlation was found in the other areas. Therefore, data from Caraguatatuba was removed from the final ANCOVA model, in which 47% of Sciaenidae biomass variability was explained by the presence of Penaeoidea shrimps. Xiphopenaeus kroyeri was the only important factor in Sciaenidae distribution in the axis 1, while axis 2 indirectly evidenced the depth gradient. The results suggest that many fish species search for the same areas where shrimp occurs, related to abiotic factors, and use them as food resource. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2008-03-01 O objetivo deste trabalho é identificar os itens alimentares que compõem a dieta de L. spinosa, por meio da análise do conteúdo estomacal. Os caranguejos foram coletados no litoral norte paulista (23º25’S–45º00’W). No laboratório, todos indivíduos foram dissecados, os estômagos foram retirados e fixados em formol 10%. Os itens alimentares foram identificados sob estereomicroscópio, sendo que para a análise foi utilizado o método Freqüência de Ocorrência. Foram analisados 194 estômagos, nos quais foram encontrados nove itens alimentares. A maior freqüência foi para material não identificado, ocorrendo em 98% dos estômagos analisados e Porifera foi o item com a menor freqüência, ocorrendo em menos de 1% dos estômagos. Com base nos resultados obtidos, sugere-se que o caranguejo L. spinosa apresenta uma dieta diversificada, sugerindo a utilização de diferentes métodos para a obtenção de alimento e por conseqüência podendo ocupar vários níveis na cadeia trófica. The main goal of this study was the identification of the items of the diet of the L. spinosa, based on the stomach contents analysis. The crabs were obtained from Ubatuba region north-eastern shore of São Paulo State. In the laboratory, all the individuals were dissected, the stomach was retreated and fixed in 10% formaline. The alimentary items were identified under stereomicroscope and analysed by the method of Frequency of Occurrence. A total of 194 stomachs was analysed and nine alimentary items were obtained. Unindentified material was found in 98% of analysed stomach and poriferan were present in less then 1% of stomachs. These results pointed a diversified diet explored by this crab, as well as the employment of some different methods for food intake. This suggested that these crabs could occupy different position in the trophic chain. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2006 The aim of this study was to examine the role of nifedipine and Nitric Oxide (NO) on salivary flow and compounds (salivary amylase, saliva total proteins, saliva calcium, sodium and potassium). Male Holtzman rats weighting 200-250 g were anesthetized with zoletil 50 mg kg-1 (tiletamine chloridrate 125.0 mg and zolazepan chloridrate 125.0 mg) into quadriceps muscle and stainless steel cannulas were implanted into their lateral ventricle of the brain (LV). Animals in divided group were injected with nifedipine (50 μg μL-1) alone and in combination with 7-nitroindazol (7-NIT) (40 μg μL-1), neuronal NO Sinthase Inhibitor (nNOSI) and Sodium Nitroprussate (SNP) (30 μg μL-1) NO donor agent. As a secretory stimuli, pilocarpine dissolved in isotonic was administered intraperitoneally (ip) at a dosage of 10 mg kg-1 body weight. Saliva was collected for 7 min with four cotton balls weighing approximately 20 mg each, two of which were placed on either side of the oral cavity, with the other two placed under the tongue. Nifedipine treatment induced a reduction in saliva secretion rate and concentration of amylase, total protein and calcium without changes in sodium and potassium concentration in comparison with controls. Co-treatment of animals with nifedipine and SNP retained flow rate and concentration of amylase, total protein and calcium in normal levels. Co-treatment of animals with nifedipine and 7-NIT potentiated the effect of nifedipine on the reduction of saliva secretion and concentrations of amylase, total protein and calcium. Nifedipine (dihydroperidine) calcium-channel blocker widely in use is associated with salivary dysfunction acting in the central nervous system structures. NO might be the mechanism for protective effect against the nifedipine-induce salivary dysfunction, acting in the CNS. © 2006 Asian Network for Scientific Information. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2006 As several structures of the central nervous system are involved in the control of hydromineral and cardiovascular balance we investigated whether the natriorhexigenic and pressor response induced by the injection of ANG II into the 3rd V could be mediated by vasopressinergic and nitrergic system. Male Holtzman rats weighing 200-250 g with cannulae implanted into the 3rd V were used. The drugs were injected in 0.5 μL over 30-60 sec. Controls were injected with a similar volume of 0.15 M NaCl. ANGII increased the water intake vs control. AVPA injected into 3rd V prior to ANGII decreased the dipsogenic effect of ANGII. L-arginine also decreased the water intake induced by ANGII. AVPA plus L-arginine inhibit the water intake induced by ANGII. 7NIT injected prior to ANGII potentiated the dipsogenic effect of ANGII. Pre-treatment with ANGII increased the sodium ingestion vs control. AVPA decreased the ANGII effect in sodium intake. L-arginine also decreased the natriorhexigenic effect of ANGII. The combination of L-arginine and AVPA inhibit the sodium intake induced by ANGII. 7NIT injected prior to ANGII potentiated the sodium intake induced by ANGII. ANGII induced an increase in Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) vs control. AVPA and L-arginine induced a decreased in the pressor effect of ANGII. The combination of L-arginine and AVPA inhibit the pressor effect of ANGII. 7NIT injected prior to ANGII into 3rd V potentiated the pressor effect of ANGII. These data suggest that arginine vasopressin V1 receptors and Nitric Oxide (NO) within the circumventricular structures may be involved in sodium intake and pressor response induced by the activation of ANGII receptors within the circumventricular neurons. These studies revealed the involvement of sodium appetite by utilizing the angiotensinergic, vasopressinergic and nitrergic system in the central regulation of blood pressure. © 2006 Asian Network for Scientific Information. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2006 O núcleo pré-óptico mediano (MnPO) é um dos locais mais importantes da lâmina terminal, implicado na regulação do equilíbrio hidroeletrolítico e cardiovascular. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar o efeito do antagonista dos canais de cálcio do tipo L, a nifedipina, no aumento da pressão arterial média (PAM) induzida pela angiotensina II (ANG II) injetada no MnPO. A influência do óxido nítrico (NO) na ação antipressora da nifedipina também foi estudada utilizando o éster metílico de N W -nitro-L-arginina (L-NAME) (40 µg 0,2 µL) Um inibidor da NO sintase (NOSI), 7-nitroindazol (7-NIT) (40 μg 0,2 μL L), um inibidor neuronal específico da NO sintase (nNOSI) e nitroprussiato de sódio ( SNP) (20 × 0, 2 × L -1 ) um agente doador de NO. Também investigamos o papel central do losartan e PD123349 (20 nmol 0,2 μL -1 ), AT 1 e AT 2 , respectivamente (seletivos antagonistas dos receptores ANG II não peptídicos), no efeito pressor de ANG II (25 pmol 0,2 µL L -1) injetado no MnPO. Utilizaram-se ratos Wistar machos, com peso entre 200 e 250 g, com cânulas implantadas no MnPO. Losartan injetado no MnPO, antes do ANG II, bloqueou o efeito pressor do ANGII. PD 123319 apenas diminuiu o efeito pressor de ANG II. Ratos pré-tratados com 50 µg 0,2 µL -1 ou 100 µg 0,2 µL -1 de nifedipina, seguidos por 25 pmol 0,2 µL -1 de ANG II, diminuição do efeito pressórico de ANG II. L-NAME potencializou o efeito pressor de ANG II. O 7-NIT injetado antes do ANG II no MnPO também potencializou o efeito pressor do ANGII, mas com menos intensidade do que o do L-NAME. O SNP injetado antes do ANG II bloqueou o efeito pressor do ANG II. A ação de potenciação de L-NAME e 7-NIT no efeito pressor de ANG II foi bloqueada por injeção prévia de nifedipina. Os resultados descritos neste estudo fornecem evidências de que os canais de cálcio desempenham papéis importantes no efeito pressórico induzido por ANG II central. As estruturas que contêm NO no cérebro, como MnPO, incluem células endoteliais e neuronais, que podem ser responsáveis pela influência da nifedipina no efeito pressor da ANG II. Esses dados demonstraram a relação funcional entre o canal de cálcio do tipo L e um gás de radical livre NO no MnPO, no controle do efeito pressor induzido por ANG II que atua em AT 1 The median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) is one of most important site of the lamina terminalis implicated in the regulation of hydro electrolytic and cardiovascular balance. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of L-Type calcium channel antagonist, nifedipine, on the increase of median arterial blood pressure (MAP) induce by angiotensin II (ANG II) injected into the MnPO. The influence of nitric oxide (NO) on nifedipine antipressor action has also been studied by utilizing NW-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (40 μg 0.2 μL-1) a NO synthase inhibitor (NOSI), 7-nitroindazole (7-NIT) (40 μg 0.2 μL-1), a specific neuronal NO synthase inhibitor (nNOSI) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) (20 μg 0.2 μL-1) a NO donor agent. We have also investigated the central role of losartan and PD123349 (20 nmol 0.2 μL-1), AT1 and AT2, respectively (selective non peptide ANG II receptor antagonists), in the pressor effect of ANG II (25 pmol 0.2 μL-1) injected into the MnPO. Male Wistar rats weighting 200-250 g, with cannulae implanted into the MnPO were utilized. Losartan injected into the MnPO, prior to ANG II, blocked the pressor effect of ANGII. PD 123319 only decreased the pressor effect of ANG II. Rats pre-treated with either 50 μg 0.2 μL-1 or 100 μg 0.2 μL-1 of nifedipine, followed by 25 pmol 0.2 μL-1 of ANG II, decreased ANG II-pressor effect. L-NAME potentiated the pressor effect of ANG II. 7-NIT injected prior to ANG II into the MnPO also potentiated the pressor effect of ANGII but with less intensity than that of L-NAME. SNP injected prior to ANG II blocked the pressor effect of ANG II. The potentiation action of L-NAME and 7-NIT on ANG II-pressor effect was blocked by prior injection of nifedipine. The results described in this study provide evidence that calcium channels play important roles in central ANG II-induced pressor effect. The structures containing NO in the brain, such as MnPO, include both endothelial and neuronal cells, which might be responsible for the influence of nifedipine on the pressor effect of ANG II. These data have shown the functional relationship between L-Type calcium channel and a free radical gas NO in the MnPO, on the control of ANG II-induced pressor effect acting in AT1 and AT2 receptors. Cada amostragem compreendeu oito transectos (14000 m² cada), amostrados mensalmente com três repetições. Os espécimes foram classificados quanto à presença ou ausência de ovos nos apêndices abdominais. Os camarões espinhos ocorreram somente em seis transectos, sendo mais abundantes no transecto II, com a maior incidência no final da primavera e ao longo dos meses de verão. Indivíduos ovígeros e não ovígeros estiveram presentes o ano todo, numa proporção semelhante a 1:1. O transecto II é caracterizado por altos valores de salinidade e oxigênio, temperatura entre 26 e 29º C, baixo teor de matéria orgânica e sedimento composto por areia muito fina. Tais características biológicas e ambientais permitem o estabelecimento e a manutenção da população de E. oplophoroides na região de estudo. The population biology of Exhippolysmata oplophoroides (Holthuis, 1948) was studied in Ubatuba Bay (23º26'S, 45º02'W), Ubatuba, São Paulo, Brazil, from September/1995 to August/1996. Each sampling comprised eight transects (14 000 m² each), sampled monthly with three repetitions. The specimens were classified with respect to the presence or absence of eggs in the abdominal appendages. Spine-shrimps occurred only on six transects, being most abundant on transect II, with the highest incidence in late spring and throughout the summer months. Ovigerous and non-ovigerous shrimps were present year-round, in an approximately similar proportion (1:1). Site II in Ubatuba Bay is characterized by high salinity and oxygen values, temperature between 26 and 29ºC, low organic matter content in the sediment, and a bottom composed of very fine sand; these environment and biological features allow the establishment and maintenance of the population of E. oplophoroides. It consists in water evaporation, through the passage of an airflow, thus decreasing the air temperature. This system has a great potential to provide thermal comfort in places where air humidity is low, being, however, less efficient where air humidity is high. A way to solve this problem is to use dehumidifiers to pre-conditioning the process air. This paper presents a system that can be used in humid climates coupling desiccant dehumidification equipment to evaporative coolers. The paper shows, initially, the main characteristics of the evaporative cooling and of the adsorption dehumidification systems. Later on the coupled systems, in which occurs a dehumidification by adsorption in a counter flow rotary heat exchanger following the evaporate cooling of the air in evaporative coolers, are analyzed. The thermodynamic equations of state are also presented. Following, this paper analyzes some operation parameters such as: reactivation temperature, R/P relationship (reactivation air flow/ process air flow) and the thermodynamic conditions of the entering air flow. The paper shows the conditions for the best operation point, with regard to thermal comfort conditions and to the energy used in the process. In addition this paper presents an application of the system in different climate characteristics of several tropical and equatorial cities. Copyright © 2005 by ABCM. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of simvastatin, by oral or subcutaneous administration, on tibial defects regeneration and blood cholesterol level in rats. A surgical defect was made on the right tibia of 40 male animals assigned to 4 groups (n=10), based on two routes of administration and on the use or not of simvastatin: subcutaneous injection of simvastatin (7 mg/kg) (group AT) or only the vehicle of drug suspension (group AC), above the defect area, for 5 days; and 20 mg/kg of simvastatin macerated on water (group BT) or only water (group BC), orally, daily, during the whole observation period. The animals were sacrificed after 15 or 30 days, when blood samples were analyzed to check plasma cholesterol levels. Tibiae were removed and, after decalcification and routine laboratorial processing, histological and histomorphometrical analyses were carried out. ANOVA was used for statistical analysis at 5% signficance level. The histological and histomorphometrical analyses showed significant differences only between the experimental periods (p0.05) for blood cholesterol levels between the groups. In conclusion, simvastatin administration either orally or subcutaneously did not improve bone repair of experimental tibial defects and did not alter blood cholesterol levels in rats. Este estudo avaliou a influência da sinvastatina, administrada por via oral ou subcutânea, na reparação de defeitos ósseos em tíbia e nos níveis de colesterol sangüíneo, em ratos. Foram realizados defeitos cirúrgicos nas tíbias direitas de 40 ratos machos, distribuídos em 4 grupos (n=10), tomando-se como base duas vias de administração e o uso ou não de sinvastatina: injeção subcutânea de sinvastatina (7 mg/kg) (grupo AT) ou apenas do veículo de suspensão da droga (grupo AC), sobre a região do defeito, durante 5 dias; 20 mg/kg de sinvastatina (grupo BT) ou água filtrada (grupo BC) via oral, diariamente, durante todo o período de observação. Os animais foram sacrificados após 15 ou 30 dias, quando amostras sangüíneas foram colhidas para análise do nível de colesterol. As tíbias foram removidas e, após descalcificação e procedimentos laboratoriais de rotina, procedeu-se à análise histológica e histomorfométrica. Para avaliação estatística utilizou-se ANOVA com nível de significância de 5%. As análises histomorfométrica e histológica mostraram diferença entre os grupos apenas com relação ao período experimental (p0,05). Concluiu-se que, nas condições utilizadas, a sinvastatina, administrada via oral ou subcutânea, não exerceu efeito estimulador sobre o reparo ósseo de defeitos experimentais em tíbias de ratos e não alterou os níveis de colesterol sangüíneo.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2004-12-01 In this work we present a description of the advertisement call of H. jimi, the locality type, and of H. elianeae, until now unknown in the literature. Field activities were carried out from August 1997 through June 1999; recordings were made in two open-area environments in the Botucatu region, São Paulo State. Vocalizations of 100 individuals (49 H. jimi and 51 H. elianeae) were recorded; nine characteristics of the advertisement call were examined. The advertisement calls of both species consist of consecutive series of simple notes with relatively fast repetition rates. Males of H. jimi and H. elianeae presented two patterns of note emission: one emitted by individuals beginning vocalization activity or isolated from the aggregate, and another emitted by males in chorus activity interacting with closely neighboring males. A significant difference was verified in the temporal structure of the two vocalization patterns. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016 Resumo Objetivo: como as doenças do aparelho respiratório são importantes causas de internação em crianças, os objetivos deste estudo são estimar o papel da exposição ao particulado fino nas internações por pneumonias e a possível redução do número dessas internações e de seus custos. Método: um estudo ecológico de séries temporais foi desenvolvido com dados de internação por pneumonias em crianças de até 10 anos de idade, residentes em São José do Rio Preto, SP, utilizando concentrações de PM2,5 estimadas por modelo matemático. Foi utilizada a regressão de Poisson com a variável dependente – internação, sendo associada às concentrações de PM2,5, ajustada por temperatura efetiva, sazonalidade e dia da semana e foram estimadas reduções no número de internações e em seus custos. Resultados: foram internadas 1161 crianças entre 01.10.2011 e 30.09.2013. A concentração média de PM2,5 foi de 18,7 µg/m3 (≈ 32 µg/m3 de PM10) e a exposição a esse poluente foi associada à internação 4 e 5 dias após a exposição. Conclusão: redução em 10 µg/m3 em sua concentração implicaria redução de 256 internações e de aproximados R$ 220 mil em uma cidade de porte médio. Summary Objective: Given that respiratory diseases are a major cause of hospitalization in children, the objectives of this study are to estimate the role of exposure to fine particulate matter in hospitalizations due to pneumonia and a possible reduction in the number of these hospitalizations and costs. Method: An ecological time-series study was developed with data on hospitalization for pneumonia among children under 10 years of age living in São José do Rio Preto, state of São Paulo, using PM2.5 concentrations estimated using a mathematical model. We used Poisson regression with a dependent variable (hospitalization) associated with PM2.5 concentrations and adjusted for effective temperature, seasonality and day of the week, with estimates of reductions in the number of hospitalizations and costs. Results: 1,161 children were admitted to hospital between October 1st, 2011, and September 30th, 2013; the average concentration of PM2.5 was 18.7 µg/m3 (≈32 µg/m3 of PM10) and exposure to this pollutant was associated with hospitalization four and five days after exposure. Conclusion: A 10 µg/m3 decrease in concentration would imply 256 less hospital admissions and savings of approximately R$ 220,000 in a medium-sized city. [Vieira, Luciana C. P. F.
