Abstract: International audience; A (di)graph H has the Erdős-Pósa (EP) property for (butterfly) minors if there exists a function f : N → N such that, for any k ∈ N and any (di)graph G, either G contains at least k pairwise vertexdisjoint copies of H as (butterfly) minor, or there exists a subset T of at most f (k) vertices such that H is not a (butterfly) minor of G − T. It is a well known result of Robertson and Seymour that an undirected graph has the EP property if and only if it is planar. This result was transposed to digraphs by Amiri, Kawarabayashi, Kreutzer and Wollan, who proved that a strong digraph has the EP property for butterfly minors if, and only if, it is a butterfly minor of a cylindrical grid. Contrary to the undirected case where a graph is planar if, and only if, it is the minor of some grid, not all planar digraphs are butterfly minors of a cylindrical grid. In this work, we characterize the planar digraphs that have a butterfly model in a cylindrical grid. In particular, this leads to a linear-time algorithm that decides whether a weakly 3-connected strong digraph has the EP property.

Abstract: International audience; A Nash k-colouring is a k-colouring (S1, . . . , Sk) such that every vertex of Si is adjacent to a vertex in Sj, whenever |Sj| ≥ |Si|. The Nash Number of G, denoted by Nn(G), is the largest k such that G admits a Nash k-colouring. A diminishing greedy k-colouring is a k-colouring (S1, . . . , Sk) such that, for all 1 ≤ j < i ≤ k, |Si| ≤ |Sj| and every vertex of Si is adjacent to a vertex in Sj. The diminishing Grundy Number of G, denoted by Γ ↓(G), is the largest k such that G admits a diminishing greedy k-colouring. In this paper, we prove some properties of Nn and Γ ↓. We mainly study the relations between them and other graph parameters such as the clique number ω, the chromatic number χ , the Grundy number Γ , and the maximum degree ∆. In particular we study the chain of inequalities ω(G) ≤ χ(G) ≤ Nn(G) ≤ Γ ↓(G) ≤ Γ (G) ≤ ∆(G)+1. We show each inequality γ1(G) ≤ γ2(G) of this chain is loose, in the sense that there is no function f such that γ2(G) ≤ f (γ1(G)). We also prove the existence or non-existence of inequalities analogue to Reed’s one stating that there exists ε > 0 such that χ (G) ≤ εω(G) + (1 − ε)(∆(G) + 1).We then study the Nash number and the diminishing Grundy number of trees and forests, and prove that Γ (F ) − 1 ≤ Nn(F ) ≤ Γ ↓(F ) ≤ Γ (F ).Finally we study the complexity of related problems. We show that computing the Nash number or the diminishing Grundy number is NP-hard even when the input graph is bipartite or chordal. We also show that deciding whether a graph satisfies γ1(G) = γ2(G) is NP-hard for every pair (γ1, γ2) with γ1 ∈ {Nn, Γ ↓} and γ2 ∈ {ω, χ , Γ , ∆ + 1}

Abstract: International audience; Many real-life signal-based applications use the Tucker decomposition of a high dimensional/order tensor. A well-known problem with the Tucker model is that its number of entries increases exponentially with its order, a phenomenon known as the "curse of the dimensionality". The Higher-Order Orthogonal Iteration (HOOI) and Higher-Order Singular Value Decomposition (HOSVD) are known as the gold standard for computing the range span of the factor matrices of a Tucker Decomposition but also suffer from the curse. In this paper, we propose a new methodology with a similar estimation accuracy as the HOSVD with non-exploding computational and storage costs. If the noise-free data follows a Tucker decomposition, the corresponding Tensor Train (TT) decomposition takes a remarkable specific structure. More precisely, we prove that for a Q-order Tucker tensor, the corresponding TT decomposition is constituted by Q − 3 3-order TT-core tensors that follow a Constrained Canonical Polyadic Decomposition. Using this new formulation and the coupling property between neighboring TTcores, we propose a JIRAFE-type scheme for the Tucker decomposition, called TRIDENT. Our numerical simulations show that the proposed method offers a drastically reduced complexity compared to the HOSVD and HOOI while outperforming the Fast Multilinear Projection (FMP) method in terms of estimation accuracy.

Abstract: An s-branching flow f in a network N = (D, u), where u is the capacity function, is a flow thatreaches every vertex in V(D) from s while loosing exactly one unit of flow in each vertex other thans. Bang-Jensen and Bessy [TCS, 2014] showed that, when every arc has capacity n − 1, a network Nadmits k arc-disjoint s-branching flows if and only if its associated digraph D contains k arc-disjoints-branchings. Thus a classical result by Edmonds stating that a digraph contains k arc-disjoints-branchings if and only if the indegree of every set X ⊆ V (D) \ {s} is at least k also characterizesthe existence of k arc-disjoint s-branching flows in those networks, suggesting that the larger thecapacities are, the closer an s-branching flow is from simply being an s-branching. This observationis further implied by results by Bang-Jensen et al. [DAM, 2016] showing that there is a polynomialalgorithm to find the flows (if they exist) when every arc has capacity n − c, for every fixed c ≥ 1,and that such an algorithm is unlikely to exist for most other choices of the capacities. In this paper,we investigate how a property that is a natural extension of the characterization by Edmonds’ relatesto the existence of k arc-disjoint s-branching flows in networks. Although this property is alwaysnecessary for the existence of the flows, we show that it is not always sufficient and that it is hardto decide if the desired flows exist even if we know beforehand that the network satisfies it. On thepositive side, we show that it guarantees the existence of the desired flows in some particular casesdepending on the choice of the capacity function or on the structure of the underlying graph of D,for example. We remark that, in those positive cases, polynomial time algorithms to find the flowscan be extracted from the constructive proofs.

Abstract: International audience; Until recently, Internet of Things applications were mainly seen as a means to gather sensor data for further processing in the Cloud. Nowadays, with the advent of Edge and Fog Computing, digital services are dragged closer to the physical world, with data processing and storage tasks distributed across the whole Cloud-to-Thing continuum. Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) is gaining momentum as one of the promising programming models for such digital services. This work investigates the current research landscape of applying FaaS over the Cloud-to-Thing continuum. In particular, we investigate the support offered by existing FaaS platforms for the deployment, placement, orchestration, and execution of functions across the whole continuum using the Systematic Mapping Study methodology. We selected 33 primary studies and analyzed their data, bringing a broad view on the current research landscape in the area.

Abstract: In Brazil and in many other tropical countries, large urban cities and populations are still growing on the coast and coverage in terms of sewage treatments is far from desirable. Cultural eutrophication is not solely a threat for the coastal ocean; it is now acting as one of its major biogeochemical and ecological driver. Along the littoral of the state of Rio de Janeiro, semi-enclosed marine bays and lagoons show clear spatial and temporal pattern of increasing concentrations of chlorophyll a (Chl a), organic carbon, and nutrients in their waters and sediments in urbanized regions. Acting as a buffer, the nearshore ecosystems have turned highly eutrophic and their autotrophic metabolism has been enhanced creating strong carbon dioxide (CO2 ) sinks. We compile here data of CO2 fluxes recently gathered in four coastal marine ecosystems in the state of Rio de Janeiro: the Guanabara Bay and the Araruama, Saquarema and Jacarepagua lagoons. We observed intense CO2 sources in restricted areas at the vicinity of sewage loads, where microbial degradation of organic matter predominates, and large CO2 sinks in confined and nearshore brackish, marine and hypersaline waters, where phytoplankton blooms occur. We also report a correlation across the four ecosystems between the partial pressure of CO2 in waters and the Chl a concentration. Chl a satellite data all along the Brazilian coast suggest that the CO2 sink induced by eutrophication probably occurs in many coastal ecosystems including bays, lagoon and shelf waters, and could contribute to an additional blue carbon. Part of the additional organic carbon is stored in sediments, and part is exported offshore. However, this additional blue carbon has dramatic environment impacts as it would evolve toward the formation of marine dead zones, and could contribute to a production of methane (CH4) a more powerful greenhouse gas. We emphasize an urgent need for multidisciplinary research to promote simultaneously the storage of atmospheric carbon, and the preservation of biodiversity and socio-economic goods in the eutrophic tropical coastal ocean. No Brasil e em muitos países tropicais, os grandes centros urbanos estão em crescimento na zona costeira, porém a cobertura das Estações de Tratamento de Esgoto ainda está muito longe do ideal. A eutrofização cultural não é somente uma ameaça ao oceano costeiro; a eutrofização é atualmente uma das maiores forçantes de processos biogeoquímicos e ecológicos. Ao longo da zona costeira do estado do Rio de Janeiro, baías e lagunas costeiras semienclausuradas mostram um padrão espaçotemoral muito claro de concentrações crescentes de clorofila a (Chl a), carbono orgânico, nutrientes em suas águas e sedimentos de regiões urbanizadas. Atuando como uma região tampão, os ecossistemas costeiros se tornaram altamente eutrofizados e o seu metabolismo autotrófico tem sido estimulado, criando fortes sumidouros de dióxido de carbono (CO2 ) da atmosfera. No presente trabalho, compilamos dados de fluxos de CO2 recentemente coletados em quatro ecossistemas marinhos costeiros do estado do Rio de Janeiro: a Baía de Guanabara e as lagunas de Araruama, Saquarema e Jacarepaguá. Observamos fontes intensas de CO2 para a atmosfera em áreas restritas nas proximidades de descargas de esgoto doméstico, onde predomina a degradação microbiana da matéria orgânica, e grandes sumidouros de CO2 em águas rasas e confinadas, salinas e hipersalinas, onde ocorrem florações de fitoplâncton. Também relatamos uma correlação entre a pressão parcial de CO2 nas águas e a concentração de Chl a nos quatro ecossistemas analisados. Os dados de satélite de toda a costa brasileira sugerem que o sumidouro de CO2 induzido pela eutrofização provavelmente ocorre em muitos outros ecossistemas costeiros, incluindo baías, lagunas e águas de plataforma continental e pode contribuir com um estoque adicional de carbono azul. Parte do carbono orgânico adicional é armazenada nos sedimentos e parte é exportada para o oceano costeiro adjacente. No entanto, esse carbono azul adicional tem impactos ambientais dramáticos, pois evoluiria em direção à formação de zonas marinhas mortas e poderia contribuir para a produção de metano (CH4 ), um gás de efeito estufa mais poderoso. Enfatizamos a necessidade urgente de pesquisas multidisciplinares para promover simultaneamente o armazenamento de carbono atmosférico e a preservação da biodiversidade e dos bens socioeconômicos no oceano costeiro tropical eutrofizado.

Abstract: Understanding the population structure of a species is important to accurately assess its conservation status and manage the risk of local extinction. The Bull Shark (Carcharhinus leucas) faces varying levels of exploitation around the world due to its coastal distribution. Information regarding population connectivity is crucial to evaluate its conservation status and local fishing impacts. In this study, we sampled 922 putative Bull Sharks from 19 locations in the first global assessment of population structure of this cosmopolitan species. Using a recently developed DNA-capture approach (DArTcap), samples were genotyped for 3,400 nuclear markers. Additionally, full mitochondrial genomes of 384 Indo-Pacific samples were sequenced. Reproductive isolation was found between and across ocean basins (eastern Pacific, western Atlantic, eastern Atlantic, Indo-West Pacific) with distinct island populations in Japan and Fiji. Bull Sharks appear to maintain reproductive connectivity using shallow coastal waters as dispersal corridors, whereas large oceanic distances and historical land-bridges act as barriers. Females tend to return to the same area for reproduction, making them more susceptible to local threats and an important focus for management actions. Given these behaviours, the exploitation of Bull Sharks from insular populations, such as Japan and Fiji, may instigate local decline that cannot readily be replenished by immigration, which can in turn affect ecosystem dynamics and functions. These data also supported the development of a genetic panel to ascertain the population of origin, which will be useful in monitoring the trade of fisheries products and assessing population-level impacts of this harvest.

Abstract: International audience; The carbonate chemistry was investigated in the semiarid eutrophic Araruama Lagoon (Brazil), one of the largest hypersaline coastal lagoons in the world. Spatial surveys during winter and summer periods were performed, in addition to a diurnal sampling in summer. The hypersaline waters have higher concentrations of total alkalinity (TA) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) than the seawater that feed the lagoon, due to evaporation. However, TA and DIC concentrations were lower than those expected from evaporation. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation partially explained these deficits. The negative correlation between the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and chlorophyll a (Chl a) indicated that DIC was also consumed by primary producers. The uptake by photosynthesis contributes to 57–63% of DIC deviation from evaporation, the remaining credited to CaCO3 precipitation. Marked pCO2 undersaturation was prevalent at the innermost region with shallow, confined, and phytoplankton-dominated waters, with a strong enrichment of heavier carbon isotope (δ13C-DIC up to 5.55‰), and highest pH (locally counter-acting the process of ocean acidification). Oversaturation was restricted to an urbanized region, and during night-time. The lagoon behaved as a marked CO2 sink during winter (− 15.32 to − 10.15 mmolC m−2 day−1), a moderate sink during summer (− 5.50 to − 4.67 mmolC m−2 day−1), with a net community production (NCP) of 93.7 mmolC m−2 day−1 and prevalence of net autotrophic metabolism. A decoupling between CO2 and O2 exchange rate at the air–water interface was attributed to differences in gas solubility, and high buffering capacity. The carbonate chemistry reveals simultaneous and antagonistic actions of CaCO3 precipitation and autotrophic metabolism on CO2 fluxes, and could reflect future conditions in populated and semiarid coastal ecosystems worldwide.

Abstract: International audience; In many countries, the challenge of sustaining rural water supplies is entrusted to community organizations, which have difficulties in performing durably the operation, maintenance and cost recovery of rural water supply systems. This paper analyzes how rural communities struggle to ensure a sustainable access to water, while seeking close interaction with outside actors such as the State, NGOs, and politicians. The analysis is based on field observations, interviews and participatory workshops in four community-managed water supply systems in Brazil and Tunisia. To sustain the access to water, communities limit their dependance on community-managed water supply systems and diversify water sources for different uses; they adapt the technical and organizational dimensions of water supply systems through bricolage ; and use political leverage to obtain financial and technical support. Understanding how communities adapt the infrastructure and the organization of rural water supply, in close interaction with external actors, may inspire water providers in designing more resilient water systems.; Dans de nombreux pays, l’approvisionnement en eau en milieu rural est confié aux organisations communautaires, qui éprouvent des difficultés à en assurer durablement l’exploitation, la maintenance et le recouvrement des coûts. Cet article analyse comment les communautés rurales luttent pour assurer un accès durable à l’eau, en sollicitant l’État, des ONG et des élus. L’analyse est basée sur des observations de terrain, des entretiens et des ateliers participatifs dans quatre communautés dans un contexte d’extrême rareté de l’eau au Brésil et en Tunisie. Pour maintenir un accès durable à l’eau, les communautés limitent leur dépendance à l’égard des systèmes collectifs et diversifient les sources d’eau pour différents usages ; elles adaptent l’infrastructure et l’organisation des systèmes collectifs par le bricolage ; et elles utilisent l’influence politique pour obtenir des soutiens des acteurs externes. Abstract: We solve the equivariant generalized Nash problem for any non-rational normal variety with torus action of complexity one. Namely, we give an explicit combinatorial description of the Nash order on the set of equivariant divisorial valuations on any such variety. Using this description, we positively solve the classical Nash problem in this setting, showing that every essential valuation is a Nash valuation. We also describe terminal valuations and use our results to answer negatively a question of de Fernex and Docampo by constructing examples of Nash valuations which are neither minimal nor terminal, thus illustrating a striking new feature of the class of singularities under consideration., Comment: proofs in Section 6 completed

Abstract: Silviculture has great importance worldwide, and the use of Eucalyptus species, which account for 75% of the local planted forest in Brazil, is one of the factors that contributes to the success of this activity in the country. Despite its adaptability, the yield of Eucalyptus is often affected by climate change, particularly water deficiency. Plants have developed strategies to mitigate water stress, for example, through their association with mycorrhizal fungi. The genus Eucalyptus, particularly in the plant domain, establishes symbioses with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECMF). The influence of Eucalyptus species on AMF and soil quality indicators is not well understood. Our aim was to conduct a preliminary evaluation of the various responses of soil AMF communities and soil nutrient dynamics in the presence of Eucalyptus species with different degrees of drought tolerance. A field experiment was established containing six Eucalyptus species, E. brassiana, E. camaldulensis, E. citriodora, E. cloeziana, E. grandis, and E. urophylla, all of which were planted in large plots. Soil and root samples were taken when the plants were 1.7 and 2.2 years old. We found that Eucalyptus species with low (E. grandis and E. urophylla) and intermediate drought tolerance (E. citriodora and E. cloeziana) showed stronger correlations with the AMF community than Eucalyptus species with high drought tolerance (E. brassiana and E. camaldulensis). Differences were also found between Eucalyptus species for AMF spore numbers and root colonization percentages, which was most evident for E. urophylla. The microbiological attributes found to be most responsive to Eucalyptus species were soil enzyme activities, AMF spore numbers, root colonization percentages, and fungal abundance. Soil organic carbon, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, and iron were the main chemical drivers related to the soil AMF community structure in the presence of E. brassiana.

Abstract: The fundamental inverse problem in distance geometry is the one of finding positions from inter-point distances. The Discretizable Molecular Distance Geometry Problem (DMDGP) is a subclass of the Distance Geometry Problem (DGP) whose search space can be discretized and represented by a binary tree, which can be explored by a Branch-and-Prune (BP) algorithm. It turns out that this combinatorial search space possesses many interesting symmetry properties that were studied in the last decade. In this paper, we present a new algorithm for this subclass of the DGP, which exploits DMDGP symmetries more effectively than its predecessors. Computational results show that the speedup, with respect to the classic BP algorithm, is considerable for sparse DMDGP instances related to protein conformation.

Reporté en 2021; International audience; This paper addresses the design of dynamic allocation functions for systems with saturating actuators. The novelty of the proposal relies on the use of an anti-windup loop to drive the state of the allocator, which in some sense dynamically compensates the difference between the computed control signal and the plant input. Furthermore, the co-design of the allocator and anti-windup loop is presented, allowing to deal with the multiple objective of reducing the allocator error and increasing the closed-loop region of stability. Theoretical conditions are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and an optimization scheme consisting in the minimization of the energy of the allocator error is proposed. Two examples borrowed from the literature illustrate the proposed technique and show its effectiveness.

At the heart of this sits the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) theory, which has been a remarkably successful contribution to the field of materials science. The BET method was developed in the 1930s for open surfaces but is now the most widely used metric for the estimation of surface areas of microand mesoporous materials. Despite its widespread use, the calculation of BET surface areas causes a spread in reported areas, resulting in reproducibility problems in both academia and industry. To prove this, for this analysis, 18 already-measured raw adsorption isotherms were provided to sixty-one labs, who were asked to calculate the corresponding BET areas. This roundrobin exercise resulted in a wide range of values. Here, the reproducibility of BET area determination from identical isotherms is demonstrated to be a largely ignored issue, raising critical concerns over the reliability of reported BET areas. To solve this major issue, a new computational approach to accurately and systematically determine the BET area of nanoporous materials is developed. Abstract: © 2022, Demange et al.; International audience; Hundreds of cytotoxic natural or synthetic lipidic compounds contain chiral alkynylcarbinol motifs, but the mechanism of action of those potential therapeutic agents remains unknown. Using a genetic screen in haploid human cells, we discovered that the enantiospecific cytotoxicity of numerous terminal alkynylcarbinols, including the highly cytotoxic dialkynylcarbinols, involves a bioactivation by HSD17B11, a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) known to oxidize the C-17 carbinol center of androstan-3-alpha,17-beta-diol to the corresponding ketone. A similar oxidation of dialkynylcarbinols generates dialkynylketones, that we characterize as highly protein-reactive electrophiles. We established that, once bioactivated in cells, the dialkynylcarbinols covalently modify several proteins involved in protein-quality control mechanisms, resulting in their lipoxidation on cysteines and lysines through Michael addition. For some proteins, this triggers their association to cellular membranes and results in endoplasmic reticulum stress, unfolded protein response activation, ubiquitin-proteasome system inhibition and cell death by apoptosis. Finally, as a proof-of-concept, we show that generic lipidic alkynylcarbinols can be devised to be bioactivated by other SDRs, including human RDH11 and HPGD/15-PGDH. Given that the SDR superfamily is one of the largest and most ubiquitous, this unique cytotoxic mechanism-of-action could be widely exploited to treat diseases, in particular cancer, through the design of tailored prodrugs.

16. Acidificação do oceano costeiro no Brasil: uma breve avaliação e perspectivas

Abstract: This perspective paper aims at presenting the current knowledge on the processes of ocean acidification (OA) and coastal acidification (CA) in the Brazilian coastal ocean. We define and differentiate the processes of OA and CA: the first driven by the actual global increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2); the second driven by a combination of ocean uptake of atmospheric CO2 and other local/regional chemical additions or subtractions in aquatic ecosystems at the land-ocean interface. Regarding OA, we have centered our analysis on the data available for the main water masses along the Brazilian coast: South Atlantic Central Water (SACW), Tropical Water (TW), and Coastal Water (CW). The few data available for the shallow coastal waters (< 200 m depth) of the continental shelf reveal an increase in the anthropogenic component of the total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) pool in the SACW, with a decline in the ocean pH (over two decades; 1993-2013), and in the saturation state of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) minerals. We could not find OA trends for TW and CW because no data was available. Overall, the colder water masses (SACW, Plata Plume) have lower buffering capacity and simulations show that will potentially experience earlier negative OA impacts than the warmer waters masses (TW, Amazon Plume). Regarding CA, we have identified some local/regional studies investigating the carbonate chemistry in nearshore/estuarine ecosystems, particularly on the quantification of sources and sinks of CO2 , and determining short-term variabilities. Apparently, spreading coastal eutrophication in Brazil can enhances or reduces the process of OA, depending on the net ecosystem metabolism in combination with other chemical alterations. However, we could not find medium-long term acidification trends due to the limited data. There is a limited capacity to produce long time-series of carbonate chemistry parameters in key ecosystems and regions along the Brazilian coast. This lack of past information hinders and impairs the scientific community for identifying potential patterns of acidification along the Brazilian coast. We call for an urgent action in Brazil, with emphasis on the establishment of moored buoys/stations and/or scientific programs in the long term with continuous, real-time measurements of the main carbonate chemistry parameters. This study investigated the thermoregulation mechanisms of the large carpenter bee Xylocopa frontalis when nesting spontaneously in nests designed to allow direct measurement of the bees’ temperature while carrying out different activities. It was seen that the species divides its activities throughout the day according to the amount of body heat generated and the ambient temperature, performing activities that generate more body heat at cooler times of the day. The bees also use strategies of thermoregulation, such as heat loss by air convection, evaporative cooling by nectar dehydration, and not foraging during the hottest times of the day to avoid overheating. The study shows that X. frontalis is well adjusted to the ecological conditions of the areas in which it lives but suggests that future rises in the ambient temperature could pose a serious threat to the survival and pollination services provided by this bee and other similar tropical species.

Abstract: In this work, equivalence relations between a Tensor Train (TT) decomposition and the Canonical Polyadic Decomposition (CPD)/Tucker Decomposition (TD) are investigated. It is shown that a Q-order tensor following a CPD/TD with Q > 3 can be written using the graph-based formalism as a train of Q tensors of order at most 3 following the same decomposition as the initial Q-order tensor. This means that for any practical problem of interest involving the CPD/TD, there exists an equivalent TT-based formulation. This equivalence allows us to overcome the curse of dimensionality when dealing with the big data tensors. In this paper, it is shown that the native difficult optimization problems for CPD/TD of Q-order tensors can be efficiently solved using the TT decomposition according to flexible strategies that involve Q − 2 optimization problems with 3-order tensors. This methodology hence involves a number of free parameters linear with Q, and thus allows to mitigate the exponential growth of parameters for Q-order tensors. Then, by capitalizing on the TT decomposition, we also formulate several robust and fast algorithms to accomplish Joint dImensionality Reduction And Factors rEtrieval (JIRAFE) for the CPD/TD. In particular, based on the TT-SVD algorithm, we show how to exploit the existing coupling between two successive TT-cores in the graph-based formalism. The advantages of the proposed solutions in terms of storage cost, computational complexity and factor estimation accuracy are also discussed.

Abstract: Background In human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–positive adults, low CD4 cell counts despite fully suppressed HIV-1 RNA on antiretroviral therapy (ART) have been associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. We assessed the prevalence and outcomes of poor immune response (PIR) in children receiving suppressive ART. Methods Sixteen cohorts from the European Pregnancy and Paediatric HIV Cohort Collaboration (EPPICC) contributed data. Children Results Of 2318 children included, median age was 6.4 years and 68% had advanced/severe immunosuppression at ART initiation. At 1 year of VS, 12% had PIR. In multivariable analysis, PIR was associated with older age and worse immunological stage at ART start, hepatitis B coinfection, and residing in Thailand (all P ≤ .03). Rates of AIDS/death (95% confidence interval) per 100 000 person-years were 1052 (547, 2022) among PIR versus 261 (166, 409) among immune responders; rate ratio of 4.04 (1.83, 8.92; P < .001). Conclusions One in eight children in our cohort experienced PIR despite sustained VS. While the overall rate of AIDS/death was low, children with PIR had a 4-fold increase in risk of event as compared with immune responders.

Abstract: Energy use of organic solid waste (RSO) through biogas is a known technology for using cattle manure and water supply. However, the context of water scarcity in the Sertões de Crateús region and the limitations to cattle raising demand adaptations. The aim of the present study was to configure a small-scale biodigester to enable the study of gray water and sheep inoculum in the treatment of leftover rice and beans. For the R1 system (control system), the manure was diluted in distiller waste water, ground in an industrial blender and left at room temperature. As for the R2 system, the water used was for rinsing kitchen utensils. After 25 days, the first batch was carried out, adequate time, second monitoring, to maintain the pH of the inoculant mixture around 7.2 and not inhibit methanogenesis. Each feed had 1 L of water and 500g of waste (150g of inoculum and 350g of RSO, divided equally into rice and beans, as, according to the literature, among the food waste analyzed, they are the most efficient in the production of biogas). Because the microorganisms do not settle right after the introduction of organic food waste in the reactor, the use of sheep inoculum was essential for the colonization of the systems, as it reduced the time for biostabilization of organic matter. Among the basic parameters for monitoring systems, pH, temperature, total organic carbon and Chemical Oxygen Demand were identified as fundamental. The results of the analysis of the affluent samples, due to the high content of organic matter, exploded, even with successive dilutions, making preliminary results of the parameters impossible. It is expected that, as the project progresses, this biodigestor configuration will be consolidated, favoring the proper management of RSO and water in semi-arid areas.; L'utilisation d'énergie des déchets organiques solides (RSO) par le biais du biogaz est une technologie connue pour l'utilisation du fumier de bétail et l'approvisionnement en eau. Cependant, le contexte de pénurie d'eau dans la région de Sertões de Crateús et les limitations de l'élevage de bétail exigent des adaptations. Le but de la présente étude était de configurer un biodigesteur à petite échelle pour permettre l'étude des eaux grises et de l'inoculum de mouton dans le traitement des restes de riz et de haricots. Pour le système R1 (système de contrôle), le fumier a été dilué dans les eaux usées du distillateur, broyé dans un mélangeur industriel et laissé à température ambiante. Quant au système R2, l'eau utilisée était destinée au rinçage des ustensiles de cuisine. Après 25 jours, le premier lot a été réalisé, temps adéquat, deuxième suivi, pour maintenir le pH du mélange inoculant autour de 7,2 et ne pas inhiber la méthanogenèse. Chaque aliment contenait 1 L d'eau et 500g de déchets (150g d'inoculum et 350g de RSO, répartis à parts égales en riz et haricots, car, selon la littérature, parmi les déchets alimentaires analysés, ils sont les plus efficaces dans la production de biogaz ). Parce que les micro-organismes ne se déposent pas juste après l'introduction des déchets alimentaires organiques dans le réacteur, l'utilisation d'inoculum de mouton était essentielle pour la colonisation des systèmes, car elle réduisait le temps de biostabilisation de la matière organique. Parmi les paramètres de base pour les systèmes de surveillance, le pH, la température, le carbone organique total et la demande chimique en oxygène ont été identifiés comme fondamentaux. Les résultats de l'analyse des échantillons aisés, en raison de la forte teneur en matière organique, ont explosé, même avec des dilutions successives, rendant impossibles les résultats préliminaires des paramètres. Il est prévu qu'au fur et à mesure de l'avancement du projet, cette configuration de biodigesteur se consolide, favorisant une bonne gestion des RSO et de l'eau dans les zones semi-arides.

Abstract: The coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis Keifer, is one of the main pests of the coconut tree (Cocos nucifera L.) worldwide. Its control is mainly based on the use of acaricides. However, due to the habitat of this pest mite, which is protected by fruit bracts that act as a physical barrier, chemical control is often inefficient. Thus, natural enemies have been studied as an alternative to acaricides. We evaluated the functional and numerical responses of Amblyseius aerialis (Muma) to increasing densities of A. guerreronis (40, 80, 160, 240 and 360) and additionally the oviposition rates of the phytoseiid A. aerialis over 11 days on different food sources: coconut pollen, A. guerreronis and a mix of pollen and A. guerreronis. Our results showed that Amblyseius aerialis showed a type III functional response, where prey consumption increasing as the density of A. guerreronis increased, with a maximum consumption of up to 175 prey per predator. All the prey densities allowed female oviposition. The number of eggs laid by A. aerialis increased with increasing prey density and stabilized between 240 and 360 A. guerreronis individuals, with an average oviposition of 1.7 eggs/female. Furthermore, our results showed that all the food sources (coconut pollen, A. guerreronis and a mix of pollen and A. guerreronis) supported oviposition. The mean oviposition was approximately 1.5 eggs/female on all the food sources. Our study suggests that A. aerialis can be effective in the biological control of A. guerreronis. However, further studies are needed to investigate whether A. aerialis can explore the habitat of A. guerreronis and if that prey can support the development of immature stages and the reproduction of A. aerialis. Abstract: International audience; Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising technology for the 6th generation of wireless systems, realizing the smart radio environment concept. In this paper, we present a novel tensor-based receiver for IRS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output communications capable of jointly estimating the channels and the transmitted data streams in a semi-blind fashion. Assuming a fully passive IRS architecture and introducing a simple space-time coding scheme at the transmitter, the received signal model can be advantageously built using the PARATUCK tensor model, which can be seen as a hybrid of parallel factor analysis and Tucker models. Exploiting the algebraic structure of the PARATUCK tensor model, a semi-blind receiver is derived. The proposed receiver is based on a trilinear alternating least squares method that iteratively estimates the two involved - IRS- base station and user terminal-IRS-communication channels and the transmitted symbol matrix. We discuss identifiability conditions that ensure the joint semi-blind recovery of the involved channel and symbol matrices, and propose a joint design of the coding and IRS reflection matrices to optimize the receiver performance. For the proposed semi-blind receiver, the derivation of the expected Cram\'er-Rao lower bound is also provided. A numerical performance evaluation of the proposed receiver design corroborates its superior performance in terms of the normalized mean squared error of the estimated channels and the achieved symbol error rate.

Abstract: International audience; This paper addresses the design of dynamic allocation functions for systems with saturating actuators. The allocator can redistribute the desired control effort within the multiple actuators by penalizing each actuator to be more or less used, while also taking into account a criterium for minimization of their total energy consumption over time. Anti-windup gains are added to both the controller and the dynamic allocator state to deal with the saturation condition. Convex conditions for the co-design of both the dynamic allocator and anti-windup gains are expressed in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Such conditions allow to deal with the multiple objective problems of enlarging the estimates of the basin of attraction and minimizing the total energy consumption of the actuators. Two examples borrowed from the literature illustrate the proposed technique and show its effectiveness.

Abstract: Dynamic textures (DTs) are pseudo periodic data on a space × time support, that can represent many natural phenomena captured from video footages. Their modeling and recognition are useful in many applications of computer vision. This paper presents an approach for DT analysis combining a graph-based description from the Complex Network framework, and a learned representation from the Randomized Neural Network (RNN) model. First, a directed space × time graph modeling with only one parameter (radius) is used to represent both the motion and the appearance of the DT. Then, instead of using classical graph measures as features, the DT descriptor is learned using a RNN, that is trained to predict the gray level of pixels from local topological measures of the graph. The weight vector of the output layer of the RNN forms the descriptor. Several structures are experimented for the RNNs, resulting in networks with final characteristics of a single hidden layer of 4, 24, or 29 neurons, and input layers 4 or 10 neurons, meaning 6 different RNNs. Experimental results on DT recognition conducted on Dyntex++ and UCLA datasets show a high discriminatory power of our descriptor, providing an accuracy of 99.92%, 98.19%, 98.94% and 95.03% on the UCLA-50, UCLA-9, UCLA-8 and Dyntex++ databases, respectively. These results outperform various literature approaches, particularly for UCLA-50. More significantly, our method is competitive in terms of computational efficiency and descriptor size. It is therefore a good option for real-time dynamic texture segmentation, as illustrated by experiments conducted on videos acquired from a moving boat.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a patrolling system composed of multiple autonomous vehicles to survey a coastal area to monitor and supervise the presence of oil spill. The dynamics of the environment is taken into account to consider a system aware of the changing environment. Wind and currents are considered from Global Forecast System and the HYCOM consortium to create a map of accumulation of particles. A distributed reactive system is implemented to drive the autonomous agents, based on a policy considering the environment and other agents positions. The simulation of the environment is carried out using Gnome, a well-known tool for oil spill simulations, which is integrated into the framework.

Abstract: Hundreds of cytotoxic natural or synthetic lipidic compounds contain chiral alkynylcarbinol motifs, but the mechanism of action of those potential therapeutic agents remains unknown. Using a genetic screen in haploid human cells, we discovered that the enantiospecific cytotoxicity of numerous terminal alkynylcarbinols, including the highly cytotoxic dialkynylcarbinols, involves a bioactivation by HSD17B11, a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) known to oxidize the C-17 carbinol center of androstan-3-alpha,17-beta-diol to the corresponding ketone. A similar oxidation of dialkynylcarbinols generates dialkynylketones, that we characterize as highly protein-reactive electrophiles. We established that, once bioactivated in cells, the dialkynylcarbinols covalently modify several proteins involved in protein-quality control mechanisms, resulting in their lipoxidation on cysteines and lysines through Michael addition. For some proteins, this triggers their association to cellular membranes and results in endoplasmic reticulum stress, unfolded protein response activation, ubiquitin-proteasome system inhibition and cell death by apoptosis. Finally, as a proof-of-concept, we show that generic lipidic alkynylcarbinols can be devised to be bioactivated by other SDRs, including human RDH11 and HPGD/15-PGDH. Given that the SDR superfamily is one of the largest and most ubiquitous, this unique cytotoxic mechanism-of-action could be widely exploited to treat diseases, in particular cancer, through the design of tailored prodrugs. Abstract: In this paper, using the recently defined generalized derivative, we present a generalized formulation of variation of calculus, which includes the classical and conformable formulation as particular cases. In the first part of the article, through the properties of this generalized derivative, we discuss the generalized versions of the Bois-Reymond lemma, a Tonelly's type existence theorem, Euler-Lagrange equation, D'Alembert principle, du Bois-Reymond optimality condition and Noether's theorem. In the second step, we discuss the Picard-Lindelof theorem, Gronwall inequality, Pontryyagin maximum principle and Noether principle for optimal control. Finally, to end the article, clarify and make the article more robust and important, we end with an application involving the fractional time Schrödinger equation.

Abstract: This paper is divided into two stages. In the first stage, we investigated a new approach for the ψ-Riemann-Liouville fractional integral and the Faa di Bruno formula for the ψ-Hilfer fractional derivative. In addition, other properties will be discussed involving the ψ-Hilfer fractional derivative and the ψ-Riemann-Liouville fractional integral. On the other hand, Bernstein polynomials involving the ψ(•) function are presented and the ψ-Riemann-Liouville fractional integral and ψ-Hilfer fractional derivative from the Bernstein polynomials are evaluated. We also discussed the relationship between the ψ-Hilfer fractional derivative with Laguerre polynomials and hypergeometric functions, and a version of the fractional mean value theorem with respect to another function. Abstract: Estuarine carbonate chemistry predicts that thermodynamic equilibration during the mixing of freshwater with seawater will generate a carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) sink in the case of warm and poorly buffered tropical rivers. The Sao Francisco River estuary has historically become oligotrophic after the construction of a series of hydroelectric dams in its watershed, where organic matter and nutrients are retained. During two cruises in late winter (Aug. 2014) and early summer (Nov. 2015), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) were found to increase linearly with salinity in the main estuarine channel, where water mixing required half a day, and showed nearly conservative behaviour. In the main channel, the water partial pressure of CO 2 (pCO2) recorded at a 1-min frequency followed an asymmetric bell-shaped trend versus salinity, similar to the curve predicted by the thermodynamic conservative mixing of freshwater DIC and TA with seawater DIC and TA. The low (0–3) salinity region was always a source of atmospheric CO2, where despite low chlorophyll concentrations, a pCO2 diurnal change of approximately 60 ppmv suggested the occurrence of photosynthesis in summer. At salinities above 3, undersaturated pCO2 values (down to 225 ppmv in winter and neap tides) and invasion of atmospheric CO2 of 0.38–1.70 mmol m−1 h−1 occurred because of the predominating thermodynamics during estuarine mixing. In winter and neap tides, the higher river discharge, intense estuarine mixing, lower temperatures and limited tidal pumping resulted in observed pCO2 differences from the theoretical conservative pCO2 by less than 3 ppmv at salinities >3. Conversely, in summer and spring tides, the recorded pCO2 values were on average + 43 ± 35 ppmv above the conservative mixing curve, when tidal pumping, CO2 invasion and surface heating were more significant in the mixing zone but not sufficient to offset the thermodynamic uptake of atmospheric CO2. By combining carbonate chemistry with estuarine mixing modelling and gas exchange calculations, we estimate that heating contributed to approximately 15% and gas exchange contributed to approximately 10% of the positive pCO2 deviation from conservative mixing during summer. The remaining 75% of the deviation reached its maximum at ebb tides and within salinity ranges consistent with the occurrence of tidal pumping from marches and mangrove soils. Indeed, in the mangrove channel, water was supersaturated, with pCO2 values of 976 ± 314 ppmv, while in the main channel, the highest positive pCO2 deviations from conservative mixing (up to +100 ppmv for several hours) occurred at ebb tides. An important finding was that in Sao Francisco, the thermodynamic and biological processes compete with each other for CO2 fluxes both at low salinities where evasion and autotrophy occur and at high salinities where invasion, heterotrophy and tidal pumping occur. Our study suggests that carbonate thermodynamics during mixing is a key process that has been overlooked in estuarine studies, although they can generate important air-water CO 2 exchange and significantly contribute to the carbon budget of estuaries and river plumes .

Abstract: Reproductive seasonality may have a considerable influence on the efficiency of assisted reproductive technologies in seasonal species. This study evaluated the effect of season on cleavage, blastocyst rates and quality of in vitro produced (IVP) goat embryos. In total, 2348 cumulus–oocyte complexes (COCs) were recovered from slaughterhouse ovaries and subjected to the same IVP system throughout 1.5 years (49 replicates). The odds ratio (OR) among seasons was calculated from values of cleavage and blastocyst rates in each season. Cleavage rate was lower (p &lt, 0.05) in spring (anestrus), in comparison with either autumn (peak of breeding season) or summer, while the winter had intermediate values. Furthermore, lower OR of cleavage was observed in spring. Blastocyst formation rate (from initial number of COCs) was higher (p &lt, 0.05) in autumn (52 ± 2.5%) when compared with the other seasons (combined rates: 40 ± 1.9%). Moreover, its OR was higher (p &lt, 0.05) in autumn compared to all other seasons and impaired in the spring compared to winter (OR: 0.54) and summer (OR: 0.48). Embryo hatchability and blastocyst cell number were similar (p &gt, 0.05) among seasons. In conclusion, the breeding season leads to improved oocyte developmental competence, resulting in higher cleavage and blastocyst yield, whereas embryo quality remained similar throughout the years.

Abstract: International audience; Increasing eutrophication of coastal waters generates disturbances in greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations and emissions to the atmosphere that are still poorly documented, particularly in the tropics. Here, we investigated the concentrations and diffusive fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) in the urban-dominated Jacarepagua Lagoon Complex (JLC) in Southeastern Brazil. This lagoonal complex receives highly polluted freshwater and shows frequent occurrences of anoxia and hypoxia and dense phytoplankton blooms. Between 2017 and 2018, four spatial surveys were performed (dry and wet conditions), with sampling in the river waters that drain the urban watershed and in the lagoon waters with increasing salinities. Strong oxygen depletion was found in the rivers, associated with extremely high values of partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2; up to 20,417 ppmv) and CH4 concentrations (up to 288,572 nmol L−1). These high GHG concentrations are attributed to organic matter degradation from untreated domestic effluents mediated by aerobic and anaerobic processes, with concomitant production of total alkalinity (TA) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). In the lagoon, GHG concentrations decreased mainly due to dilution with seawater and degassing. In addition, the phytoplankton growth and CH4 oxidation apparently consumed some CO2 and CH4, respectively. TA concentrations showed a marked minimum at salinity of ~20 compared to the two freshwater and marine end members, indicating processes of re-oxidation of inorganic reduced species from the low-salinity region, such as ammonia, iron, and/or sulfides. Diffusive emissions of gases from the entire lagoon ranged from 22 to 48 mmol C m−2 d−1 for CO2 and from 2.2 to 16.5 mmol C m−2 d−1 for CH4. This later value is among the highest documented in coastal waters. In terms of global warming potential (GWP) and CO2 equivalent emissions (CO2-eq), the diffusive emissions of CH4 were higher than those of CO2. These results highlight that highly polluted coastal ecosystems are hotspots of GHG emissions to the atmosphere, which may become increasingly significant in future global carbon budgets.

Abstract: International audience; Blockchain is currently a technology that has been attracting a lot of attention both in academia and industry. Several areas of expertise are benefiting from blockchain due to its characteristics, such as data security, decentralization, traceability and immutability. The objective of this work is to present the use of a blockchain allowed with the implementation of a prototype in the context of e-health applications. Preliminary results indicate that blockchain can be well used for e-health applications, integrating with other technologies.

Abstract: International audience; Au Nordeste du Brésil, le tourisme balnéaire se développe particulièrement à proximité desmétropoles. Ce tourisme a été initié par des politiques publiques et implique des acteurs privésdans la création de complexes hôteliers fortement capitalisés. Cet article explore les registres surlesquels les politiques sont justifiées dans les discours des acteurs, il analyse les types de conflitsgénérés par le contrôle de l’espace notamment au sujet du partage de la ressource en eau entreles complexes hôteliers et les populations locales. L’étude concerne deux territoirespréalablement occupés par des classes populaires, à la périphérie de grandes métropoles. Lesdiscours des acteurs du tourisme promeuvent la modernisation et le développement économiquecensés accompagner les complexes touristiques qui en réalité génèrent une exclusion de l’espacelittoral des populations locales. Les habitants du littoral, mal desservis par les réseauxd’adduction d’eau potable, voient leur puit individuel menacé par l’exploitation de l’aquifèreopérée par les complexes touristiques, sans que les pouvoirs publics régulent réellement l’usagede l’eau.

Abstract: International audience; Over the last two decades, tensor-based methods have received growing attention in the signal processing community. In this work, we propose a comprehensive overview of tensor-based models and methods for multisensor signal processing. We present for instance the Tucker decomposition, the Canonical Polyadic Decomposition (CPD), the Tensor-Train Decomposition (TTD), the Structured TTD, including Nested Tucker Train (NTT), as well as the associated optimization strategies. More precisely, we give synthetic descriptions of state-of-art estimators as the Alternating Least Square (ALS) algorithm, the High-Order SVD (HOSVD), and of more advanced algorithms as the Rectified ALS, the TT-SVD/TT-HSVD and the Joint dImensionally Reduction And Factor retrieval Estimator (JIRAFE) scheme. We illustrate the efficiency of the introduced methodological and algorithmic concepts in the context of three important and timely signal processing-based applications: the Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) estimation based on sensor arrays, multidimensional harmonic retrieval and MIMO wireless communication systems.

Abstract: International audience; Currently, several technologies are being used together to improve the quality of services for people. Specifically for the health area, the application possibilities involving both software and hardware are quite diverse. Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain are two technologies that are currently integrating more and more to provide better services, taking advantage of their characteristics. This work proposes an architecture for the collection and storage of e-health data, based on IoT and blockchain. For its validation, a prototype was designed and the flow of operations was analyzed. Preliminary results indicated the proposed architecture has the potential to integrate IoT and blockchain to support e-health applications, enabling research and application development, but a broader study with IoT devices is needed for a better assessment.

Abstract: Accepted for publication.; International audience; The estimation of the atrial activity (AA) signal from electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings is an important step in the noninvasive analysis of atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common sustained arrhythmia encountered in clinical practice. This problem admits a blind source separation (BSS) formulation that has been recently posed as a tensor factorization, using the Hankel-based block term decomposition (BTD), which is particularly well-suited to the estimation of exponential models like AA during AF. However, persistent forms of AF are characterized by short R-R intervals and very disorganized (or weak) AA, making it difficult to model AA directly and perform its successful extraction through Hankel-BTD. To overcome this drawback, the present work proposes a tensor approach to estimate QRS complexes and subtract them from the ECG, resulting in a signal that, ideally, only contains the AA component. Such an approach tackles the problem of blind separation of rational functions, which models QRS complexes explicitly. The data tensor admitting a BTD is built from Löwner matrices generated from each lead of the observed ECG. To this end, this paper formulates a variant of the recently proposed constrained alternating group lasso (CAGL) algorithm that imposes Löwner structure on the decomposition blocks. This is done by performing an orthogonal projection, which we explicitly derive, at each iteration of CAGL. Results from experiments with synthetic data show the consistency of the proposed Löwner-constrained AGL (LCAGL) in extracting the desired sources. Experimental results obtained on a population of 20 patients suffering from persistent AF show that the proposed variant outperforms other tensor-based methods in terms of atrial signal estimation quality from ECG records as short as a single heartbeat.

Abstract: International audience; Despite technological advances, vehicles are still unable to meet the demands of some applications for massive computational resources in a feasible time. One way to deal with this situation is to integrate the computation offloading technique into a vehicular edge computing system. This integration allows application tasks to be executed on neighboring vehicles or edge servers coupled to base stations. However, the dynamic nature of vehicular networks, allied to over- loaded servers, can lead to failures and reduce the effectiveness of the offloading technique. Therefore, we propose a context-oriented framework for computation offloading to reduce the application execution time and maintain high reliabilityin vehicular edge computing. The framework modules perform computational resources discovery, contextual data gathering, computation tasks distribution, and failure recovery. Its main part is a task assignment algorithm that seeks the best possible server to execute each application task, using contextual information and WAVE and 5G networks. The results of extensive experiments in different vehicular environments show that our framework reduces up to 70.3% of total execution time compared to totally local execution and up to 42.9% compared to other literature approaches. Concerning reliability, our framework achieves to offload up to 89.4% of all tasks and needs to recover only 0.8% of them. Thus, our solution outperforms the totally local execution of the application and other existing computation offloading solutions.

Abstract: International audience; In this chapter, we present an algebraic relation between the Tucker model and the Tensor-Train decomposition with structured cores. Exploiting this link, we present a new fast algorithm to compute the dominant singular subspaces of a Q-order tensor. As opposedt o the state of the art methods (usually called HOSVD for high-order SVD), our approach mitigates the well-known “curse of dimentionality”. This approach is applied to speed up kernel-based supervised tensor classification.

Abstract: This article proposes a supervised tensor-based learning framework for classifying volcano-seismic events from signals recorded at the Ubinas volcano, in Peru, during a period of great activity in 2009. The proposed method is fully tensorial, as it integrates the three main steps of the automatic classification system (feature extraction, dimensionality reduction, and classifier) in a general multidimensional framework for tensor data, joining tensor learning techniques such as the multilinear principal component analysis (MPCA) and the support tensor machine (STM). By exploiting the use of multiple multichannel triaxial sensors, operating simultaneously in two seismic stations, the tensor patterns are constructed as stations × channels × features. The multidimensional structure of the data is then preserved, avoiding the tensor vectorization that often leads to a feature vector with a large dimension, which increases the number of parameters and may cause the “curse of dimensionality.”Moreover, the array vectorization breaks down the multidimensional structure of the data, which usually leads to performance degradation. The results showed a good performance of the proposed multilinear classification system, significantly outperforming its vectorial counterparts. The best result was obtained with the STuM classifier along with the MPCA.

Abstract: Given a graph $G$ and a digraph $D$ whose vertices are the edges of $G$, we investigate the problem of finding a spanning tree of $G$ that satisfies the constraints imposed by $D$. The restrictions to add an edge in the tree depend on its neighborhood in $D$. Here, we generalize previously investigated problems by also considering as input functions $\ell$ and $u$ on $E(G)$ that give a lower and an upper bound, respectively, on the number of constraints that must be satisfied by each edge. The produced feasibility problem is denoted by \texttt{G-DCST}, while the optimization problem is denoted by \texttt{G-DCMST}. We show that \texttt{G-DCST} is NP-complete even under strong assumptions on the structures of $G$ and $D$, as well as on functions $\ell$ and $u$. On the positive side, we prove two polynomial results, one for \texttt{G-DCST} and another for \texttt{G-DCMST}, and also give a simple exponential-time algorithm along with a proof that it is asymptotically optimal under the \ETH. Finally, we prove that other previously studied constrained spanning tree (\textsc{CST}) problems can be modeled within our framework, namely, the \textsc{Conflict CST}, the \textsc{Forcing CS, the \textsc{At Least One/All Dependency CST}, the \textsc{Maximum Degree CST}, the \textsc{Minimum Degree CST}, and the \textsc{Fixed-Leaves Minimum Degree CST}., Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: International audience; We report the preliminary results of a feasibility study in which we investigate the possibility to operate a common class of activated sludge plants to produce effluent wastewater of varying quality for crop irrigation. Firstly, a nitrogen reference trajectory is computed as solution to a higher-level optimal control problem that aims at maximizing plant biomass in a crop growth system. We then study how to control the treatment plant with a zero-offset predictive control strategy designed to operate the treatment process to supply nitrogen according to this optimal planning for crop growth. We show how an ad hoc tuning of the predictive controller allows to define alternative policies that favour the manipulation of different forms of nitrogen in the treatment plant. We show that the designed controllers are only partially capable to operate the treatment plant to meet the nitrogen demand, when subjected to typical municipal wastewater influent conditions. However, zero-offset can be achieved under constant influent conditions. We analyse the performance of the controller in terms of tracking accuracy and operational energy.

Abstract: Let $\mathcal{r} ≥ 1$ be any non negative integer and let $G = (V, E)$ be any undirected graph in which a subset $D ⊆ V$ of vertices are initially infected. We consider the following process in which, at every step, each non-infected vertex with at least $\mathcal{r}$ infected neighbours becomes and an infected vertex never becomes non-infected. The problem consists in determining the minimum size $s_r (G)$ of an initially infected vertices set $D$ that eventually infects the whole graph $G$. Note that $s_1 (G)$ = 1 for any connected graph $G$. This problem is closely related to cellular automata, to percolation problems and to the Game of Life studied by John Conway. Note that $s_1(G) = 1$ for any connected graph $G$. The case when $G$ is the $n × n$ grid $G_{n×n}$ and $\mathcal{r} = 2$ is well known and appears in many puzzles books, in particular due to the elegant proof that shows that $s_2(G_{n×n})$ = $n$ for all $n$ ∈ $\mathbb{N}$. We study the cases of square grids $G_{n×n}$ and tori $T_{n×n}$ when $\mathcal{r}$ ∈ {3, 4}. We show that $s_3(G_{n×n})$ = $\lceil\frac{n^2+2n+4}{3}\rceil$ for every $n$ even and that $\lceil\frac{n^2 +2n}{3}\rceil$ ≤ $s_3(G_ {n×n})$ ≤ $\lceil\frac{n^2 +2n}{3}\rceil$ + 1 for any $n$ odd. When $n$ is odd, we show that both bounds are reached, namely $s_3(G_{n×n})$ = $\lceil\frac{n^2 +2n}{3}\rceil$ if $n$ ≡ 5 (mod 6) or $n$ = 2$^p$ − 1 for any $p$ ∈ $\mathbb{N}^*$, and $s_3(G_{n×n})$ = $\lceil\frac{n^2 +2n}{3}\rceil$ + 1 if $n$ ∈ {9, 13}. Finally, for all $n$ ∈ $\mathbb{N}$, we give the exact expression of $s_4(G_{n×n})$ and of $s_r(T_{n×n})$ when $\mathcal{r}$ ∈ {3, 4}.

Abstract: International audience; Understanding processes that explain phytolith assemblages and their concentration in the soil and sediments is essential to interpret long-term ecological changes. The present study shows modern phytolith assemblages and their relationship with the vegetation cover in the Caatinga biome, state of Ceará, northeastern Brazil. We collected recent samples from soil surfaces in 2015 in three different vegetation covers (open shrubby Caatinga, dense shrubby Caatinga, and Caatinga forest vegetation) and from two cores with recently deposited sediments, in Massapê (74 cm depth, 55 years old) and Varjota (50 cm depth, 58 years old). After phytolith extraction, we studied twelve samples from soils and thirteen samples from cores. The counting revealed 26 different phytolith types with some differences in the concentration of silica bodies in different vegetation covers. Phytoliths were well preserved and could be related to the presence of plants, such as Poaceae (subfamily Panicoideae and Chloridoideae), Arecaceae and Cyperaceae. In the two cores, the most common type was globular echinate and could be associated with the presence of palms in the riparian forest and open landscapes in the surroundings. In all soil surfaces samples, the saddle was the most frequent type. We found a high concentration of globular granulate around Aiuaba Ecological Station, which harbors a preserved Caatinga area. Finally, we observed a good match between phytolith assemblages and the vegetation cover collected in soils and reservoirs.

Abstract: International audience; In hot climates, foraging bees risk overheating during food collection. Here, we investigated influence of ambient temperature on the foraging activity in Melipona subnitida, a stingless bee species that naturally occurs in the hottest and driest regions of the Brazilian tropical dry forest. We observed a decrease in round-trip duration of pollen foragers with increasing ambient temperature. Foraging duration of nectar collectors, however, was not affected by the thermal conditions of the environment. When exposed to heat stress in incubators, the upper thermal limits of foragers decreased with increasing exposure time. Moreover, individuals with previous access to liquid food showed higher critical and lethal temperatures than unfed bees. Our study revealed plastic changes in the upper thermal limit of M. subnitida, which help to understand the foraging activity pattern of this stingless bee species.

Abstract: International audience; The present study determined i) the presence of proteins (oviduct-specific glycoprotein, OVGP1; heat shock protein-70A, HSPA1A; heat shock protein-A8, HSPA8; annexin A1, ANXA1; annexin A5, ANXA5; and myosin-9, MYH9) known to be involved in early reproduction in the oviduct fluid (OF) of anestrous goats; and ii) the functional effect of during IVF on polyspermy modulation and embryonic development. In vitro-matured oocytes were co-cultured with spermatozoa (1.0, 2.0, or 4.0 x 106 cells/mL) for 18 h in SOF medium supplemented with 5 mg/mL of heparin, 4 mg/mL gentamicin, and 10% estrus sheep serum (CTRL1, CTRL2, and CTRL4 groups) or the same medium plus 10% OF (OF1, OF2, and OF4 groups) obtained from anestrus goats. The analysis of OF by western blotting confirmed the presence of the six proteins tested for. The increase in sperm concentration had no effect (P > 0.05) on the penetration rate in any group; however, monospermy rate decreased as sperm concentration was increased in both OF and CTRL. Regardless of the concentration used, when data were pooled, OF supplementation improved (P < 0.05) monospermy and tended (P 0.057) to enhance IVF efficiency. Additionally, IVF efficiency was higher (P < 0.05) in OF1 than in OF4 [60 +/- 13 vs 37 +/- 5%). The development capacity was not affected (P > 0.05) by the sperm concentration and OF treatment, and the average values were cleavage (72 +/- 2.6%), blastocyst (37 +/- 3.0%), blastocyst in relation to the cleaved (51 +/- 4.8%), hatched (62 +/- 1.2%), and number of cells per blastocyst (174 +/- 1.8%). In conclusion, the six proteins analyzed are present in the OF of anestrous goats, and the supplementation of this OF during IVF may modulate the polyspermy incidence and enhance IVF efficiency, especially when 1x10(6) sperm per mL is used.
