Introduction: This article recovers the processes experienced during the period 2018-2022 as part of the University Society relationship developed from the linking of two substantive university activities, in a local space located in the cross-border area of San José de Upala, in the north of Costa Rica from the School of Social Work of the University of Costa Rica. Objective: Recover the main processes experienced within the framework of a pedagogical and Social Action process during five years of existence of the link between the School of Social Work and the towns of San José de Upala. Method: Based on the experience of the process and its systematization, a tour is made of the main milestones that have marked the development of academic activities in San José de Upala, from a qualitative approach to administrative documents, student works, field notes. of the teacher responsible for work processes, administrative reports, among others. Results: A work process marked by the conditions of social exclusion experienced by crossborder populations, deepened during the COVID19 syndemic, is recognized. In this framework, the bond established between the students and the teacher was fundamental, which has allowed us to recognize and influence the particularities of each locality. Conclusions: There is evidence of a long journey, as well as multiple academic learning and contributions to the local spaces of San José de Upala where work has been done. It is concluded that to achieve these contributions, academic and administrative conditions are required that allow support and promotion of work. Ethical discussions and work with children are permanent challenges that must continue to be addressed and strengthened in future work processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Workshop I: "Local organization and construction of citizenship" is the first practical experience developed by Social Work students at the University of Costa Rica. This article corresponds to a systematization of the pedagogical process with a constructivist perspective developed in the period 2020-2023, in terms of the student body's approach to environmental issues, particularly with respect to environmental sanitation and its connection with Social Work in local spaces. Objective: Analyze the pedagogical process developed in workshop I to generate greater environmental awareness in Social Work students, for their ethical positioning to be consistent with the actions proposed within the course. Method: The article corresponds to a systematization of experiences, which was carried out by reviewing documents such as: course planning, audios and videos used in the development of classes, field diaries and final student reports, as well as presentations developed by students. Results: The pedagogical process carried out during the period under study is based on a constructivist approach, in which a personal reflection of the student body on perceptions, representations and daily actions in environmental terms is promoted, as a basis for the promotion of significant changes in themselves, the people, communities, and/or organizations with which they intervene during the practice. Conclusions: It is necessary to work on the change of thought structures and behaviors related to the environment, as a prerequisite to provoke social change with other local actors. The teacher is responsible for promoting new knowledge and mediating between culture and the student's learning processes, For his part, the student is the main actor in the teaching and learning processes, generating greater environmental awareness consistent with the actions within de class's framework. SEXUAL division of labor , *SOCIAL work students , *COMMUNITY involvement , *COMMUNITY-based participatory research , *WATER management , *HOUSEKEEPING , *PLAZAS - Abstract
Introduction: This process is framed in the experience of the Social Work students of the University of Costa Rica in the course TS0043 Workshop II Local organization and construction of citizenship II, who carried out a community process in the El Bosque community with the Asociación Administradora de los Acueductos y Alcantarillados Comunitarios (ASADA) Barrio El Bosque in the canton of Guácimo in the province of Limón. Main Objective: The objective of the project carried out was to reconstruct the community experience of connection with the participation processes, in order to make it useful for future approaches regarding the dynamics of the Barrio El Bosque community. Method: It could be possible through Participatory Action Research, which represents a series of techniques that start from the idea of integrating people to the process. Results: It was evident that one of the barriers to access to education is the poverty gap. Also, the main activities are linked to the gender division of labor, which is why women invest a greater number of hours at work, when adding the days of domestic work. The important spaces for the community are the plaza, being a meeting place; Furthermore, it is found that there is a high interest in water management; However, there is a lack of knowledge of the processes related to water management in the communal aqueduct. Conclusion: Approaching communities from a conscious and horizontal perspective allows us to obtain real results that are consistent with the context of life of those who build daily life. WOMEN'S roles , *COMMUNITY organization , *SOCIAL group work , *HUMAN rights , *SOCIAL work students , *SOCIAL services , *GROUP process , *ORGANIZATIONAL citizenship behavior - Abstract
Introduction: This article is based on the results obtained, through the work process with the group of women in the community of Los Ledezma, during the first and second semester of the workshop Local organization and construction of citizenship, taught by the School of Social Work at the University of Costa Rica. Objective: Analyze the lived experience of the achievements and learning of the group of Social Work students, through the work process with the women of Los Ledezma, during the year 2022. Method: From a social approach, from the review of background and field diaries, the achievements and learning derived from the work are observed, based on theoreticalmethodological understandings translated into the organization of a group of women in the town of Los Ledezma. Results: A greater handling of technical tools by the work group is identified, having a more accurate understanding of reality from the application of previously acquired theory. As well as a more defined ethical-political position in practice. Conclusions: This is not a linear process, there were numerous challenges that led to testing, proposing, negotiating and starting over; Flexibility was a constantly applied skill, due to the fact that different daily activities were being worked on. A necessary axis of analysis, linked to the above, is the system that reduces women to fulfilling specific roles in which there is no space for them to participate on their own and use their voice. Introduction: The stated reflections were built upon the systematization of the teaching experience in the courses: Workshop I and II: Local Organization and Construction of Citizenship of the School of Social Work of the University of Costa Rica, during the period 2021-2022. Objective: This article aims to expose the main challenges of the virtualization of community processes and identify the main strategies for learning and strengthening the Social Solidarity Economy. Method and technique: Since the course that frames the teaching experience focuses on Participatory Action Research, the reflections respond to the result of a process of systematization of experiences during the period described. Results: The experience lived in the course during the years 2021 and 2022 evidenced great challenges in the approach to the daily life of the people linked to San Antonio de Escazú, however, the key to establishing trust and guaranteeing commitment in the community processes was the construction of distance communication strategies according to their living conditions. Conclusions: The virtualization of community processes caused transformations in the approach and construction of links with the population. In this context, strengthening the Social Solidarity Economy represented a challenge for the organizations within the local space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: This article deals with elements related to the socio-educational dimension of Social Work, in the context of the academic practices of the third level of the career at the University of Costa Rica, specifically the course Local Organization and Citizenship I and II, carried out in collaboration with the district of Río Azul, Cartago. Objective: To identify relevant elements about socio-educational issues and their relationship with academic practice in Social Work. Method: The practice starts from the socio-educational dimension, with a methodology based on participatory action research, which included a diagnosis process together with the community and the creation of a work plan in response to the needs identified with the population. Results: It is necessary to problematize the socio-educational dimension in the face of emerging objects of intervention in the professional field, for which the diagnosis is a fundamental tool that allows a professional approach in a critical way. This must be accompanied by situational planning, mapping of actors and principles of intervention-action. In this programme, practical needs were identified in areas such as poverty, violence, inequality and social exclusion. 16 workshops on life skills, migration and violence were held with boys and girls from the Francisco Gamboa School in Río Azul. Conclusions: Working from the socio-educational dimension implies a dynamic understanding of the daily reality of the people with whom we work. Intervention in this dimension requires a deep and respectful integration with the local space, always prioritizing the well-being of the people involved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: this article recovers the main results of the systematization of experiences carried out within the framework of the Workshop: Local Organization and Construction of Citizenship I and II, of the third year of the study plan of the Social Work career of the University of Costa Rica (UCR). Objective: to identify the various contributions of the academic experience in Social Work to the construction of citizenship and recognition, defense and enforceability of the rights of people with disabilities, during the period of 2021-2022. Method: this research is supported by the documentary review and the academic experience of the Workshop: Local Organization and Construction of Citizenship I and II, as well as the final report developed by the students in 2021-2022 Results: the third-year academic practice is a space for reflection and historical apprehension of reality in the local space for students. The systematization of experiences allows us to visualize the work with organizations, strategic lines of action, organizational processes and challenges at the community level. Conclusions: Social Work has a strong interference in local processes and construction of citizenship from its academic practices, which allows its students to develop skills. Academic internships are and will continue to be a privileged space for contact with populations and in Belén, an exceptional bridge for the development of an accessible and friendly locality, especially for all people with disabilities. Introduction: Changing universities into for profit corporations has taken them to outsourcing as a way to reduce expending. Objectives: This article tries to understand the way in which outsourcing, as a «third space»or «middle space» is built by workers hired by Servicio de Limpieza a su Medida S.A (SELIME), at the University of Costa Rica (UCR). It also describes how these persons experience precarious labor, which is established by contracts, norms and practices between private and public spheres. Method and technique: Our research is based on participant observation, analysis of five minutes of sessions from the Consejo Universitario, nine in depth interviews with cleaning workers, and an interview with the personnel from the Oficina de Servicios Contratados. The interviews focus on the categories working conditions and labor environment. Another interview with the working team from the Vicerrectoría de Administración that is analyzing outsourcing at UCR focused on outsourcing policies and bidding processes at the University. Results: We analyze the way in which a bicephalous and ambiguous structure of precarious forms creates hierarches and affect the bodies of people dedicated to cleaning work as they occupy the bottom step of a normed but arbitrary and hostile organization, especially in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. Conclusions: It is evident the fragmentation of the labor sector in this structure, with which labor control is facilitated. Despite all these, and in contradiction with the humanistic vision at the University, the public institution sustains and even increases outsourcing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The article systematizes the process and results of an experience between the academy and the health authorities of Costa Rica. The initiative finds its genesis during the year 2020, in the midst of the social and health crisis faced worldwide due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Authorities from the Ministry of Health of the San Carlos area and the School of Social Work of the University of Costa Rica agreed on an alliance to support health teams in monitoring people diagnosed with COVID-19 in the region. Objectives: With the participation of a team of ETSoc teachers, students, and administrators, the challenge of actively joining national efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 and care for the affected population was assumed. Method and technique: Psychosocial care made it possible to address the basic, emotional and social needs of the people who were followed up. The structured interview conducted by telephone using a form facilitated the processing and analysis of information in real time. Results: The project managed to provide telephone follow-up on the state of physical and emotional health of people in quarantine, adding to the institutional efforts to control the transmission chain of COVID-19 and offer psychological first aid to the target population. Conclusions: The results show the relevance of inter-institutional alliances in the attention of the national emergency and the great potential of university social action as a substantive activity of the public university. Mental health problems, specifically those related to stress, anxiety, and depression, have become more prevalent among college students compared to data available prior to the levels of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent studies have shown that in different geographical areas, there is a high prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in university students compared to pre-pandemic levels. Thus, our objective was to establish self-perceived levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in university students earning an education degree at the University of Granada and the University of Costa Rica during periods of confinement and virtual learning associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The final study sample consisted of 942 students from both universities. Two questionnaires were administered: The state trait anxiety inventory and the depression, anxiety, and stress scale 21. Descriptive analyses, mean comparisons, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multivariate regression were performed. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha, and the effect size was analyzed using Cohen's d. The results indicated that levels of depression, anxiety, and stress were mild or moderate despite the confinement and virtual learning associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Women had higher levels of anxiety than men, and singles had higher levels of anxiety than individuals in other family situations. Younger individuals had higher levels of stress and anxiety. The objective was to determine the maximum continuous power capacity that the power source must deliver and the minimum autonomy time of the mobile humanoid robot system. The results of power consumption tests on a humanoid robot computer are presented, where currents and powers were recorded in different performance tests and the efficiency of the power source was calculated. In addition, the autonomy time of the system using batteries was estimated. The implemented methodology allows analyzing the performance and energy consumption of a system before its actual operation. [Extracted from the article]

This article is the result of the research project: "Between the public university and the private company: the lived space of subcontracted cleaning workers at the University of Costa Rica", that is taking place at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Costa Rica (UCR). It is based on 10 interviews conducted during the year 2021 with personnel from the company Servicios de Limpieza a su Medida (SELIME) at UCR, with members of the Private Sector Workers Union (SITRASEP) who represent them, and with personnel from the Sección de Servicios Contratados of the Oficina de Servicios Generales, located within the Vicerrectoría de Administración at UCR, and on the analysis of official documents related to the management of these services. The latest represents a fundamental component of neoliberal transformation among public universities where precarious labor is justified on the bases of spending cuts, efficiency and control. This article allows us to know the implications of this kind of organization on the lives of outsourced workers at the labor and psychosocial levels, as well as the possibilities to resist through infrapolitical practices and collective organization confronting the private business and the public institution that, based on actual legislation, disavows labor rights and the needs of workers, and implements hostile practices against union organization. Costa Rica is a country full of great privileges due to the geographical position in which it is located, one of these privileges is the great production of water resources that occurs in almost the entire extension of the territory during all times of the year This has led to the promotion of human settlements almost anywhere in the country. These settlements are often supplied with water both for consumption and for the development of productive activities by Associations Administrators of Communal Aqueduct and Sewer Systems commonly known as ASADAS, which has generated that in very different ways all kinds of activities and actions are carried out. To comply with the service to users, as part of a specific experience as a university extensionist teacher, it is intended to capture the work that the University of Costa Rica public institution of higher education had the experience of working with communities where ASADAS operated from a University Community Work project and the impact that this generated on the students who participated. PSYCHOLOGICAL research , *SCHOOL psychology , *ETHICAL problems , *HIGHER education , *COMMUNITY psychology , *PSYCHOLOGISTS , *COMMUNITY schools , *BIOETHICS - Abstract
Introduction: This article seeks to systematize and make effective the concerns and debates generated from the implementation of the Good Clinical and Research Practices course that psychologists must currently take in order to be accredited by the National Councilfor Health Research (CONIS) in compliance with the requirement of the Biomedical Research Regulation Law (No. 9234). Objective: To this end, the research seeks to identify the value that members of the academic and student community of the School of Psychology of the University of Costa Rica have on the approach to bioethics, health and the therapy in the framework of this course. Likewise, the objective is to learn the criteria that the academic community considers essential for the development of a course of this nature. Method and technique: The research methodology is qualitative and the data were collected using the problem-centered interview technique. Regarding the information analysis, the assessments made by the people consulted on the content of the Course were typified and then an analysis of the arguments supporting these assessments was developed. Results: The research shows that there are important disparities between the course paths and the way in which the interviewees conceive the work of psychology. One of the points on which there is most disagreement is the scope of the course, since some people think that it covers all disciplines, including psychology, while for others the course concerns only medical disciplines. As far as both teachers and students are concerned, two clearly defined antagonistic positions are outlined. One of these positions states that the Course is inadequate for the approach of ethics in relation to psychology, while the other position argues that the guidelines it provides are correct for that purpose. Conclusions: As a conclusion, an aspect that must be emphasized is that, although the contents of the course are valuable for thinking about ethical dilemmas in general terms, their applicability is limited for going deeper into the axiological problems of the psychological field. Introduction: the objective of this article is to contribute to the discussions about the hidden gender curriculum of the University and reveal the findings from the Gender, Human Rights and Diversity Commission of the Political Sciences Faculty from the University of Costa Rica. Objective: serve for discussions on the progressive elimination of the hidden gender curriculum and discrimination against women in the university community Method: its focus around the theoretical discussion and research done by other universities on how hidden gender curriculum affects women and men differently. Also, addresses the experience of both students and professors. The results: this article reveals how the Universities reproduce human behaviors and mindsets as it represents a social space that can legitimize inequality as well as minimize and hide inter and intra gender violence throughout the formal and informal educational system/process. It is essential to address the importance of universities in society and contribute to equality and the respect of human rights for everyone. Conclusions: building a true culture of gender equality at university level, requires implementing a coeducational model. That model proposes an integral formation, considers the environment of institutions as a space to learn new attitudes, coexistence, and equality. This also promotes methodologies for people to participate actively and teamwork, value all aspects of people's lives, accept differences, pay attention to the most discriminated people and groups, and make visible the contributions of women in all fields of knowledge. Introduction: Stress is associated with disease and reduced leukocyte telomere length (LTL). The objective of this research is to determine if self-perceived stress is associated with telomere length in Costa Rican adults and the gender differences in this association. Findings may help explain how some populations in apparent socioeconomic disadvantage and with limited access to specialized medical services have a remarkably high life expectancy. Methodology: Data come from the pre-retirement cohort of the Costa Rican Longevity and Healthy Aging Study (CRELES), a population based survey conducted in the households to 2,327 adults aged 53 to 66 years. The DNA to measure LTL was extracted from blood cells in laboratories of the University of Costa Rica whereas the Blackburn laboratory at the University of California performed the telomere length measurement applying the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (Q-PCR). The relationship between telomere length and perceived stress was measured using least-squares multiple regression. Perceived stress was measured by a set of questions about family, job, finances and, health reasons to be stressed. Models included the control variables: (1) age and sex of the participant, (2) whether he or she resides in the Nicoya area, a "blue zone" known for its high longevity, and (3) the aforementioned sociodemographic, health and lifestyles characteristics. Results: Stress perception and LTL are significantly different by sex. Women perceived higher stress levels than men in almost all aspects studied, except work. Women have significantly longer telomeres. Shorter telomeres are significantly associated with caregiving stress in men and with parental health concerns in women. Counter-intuitive telomere lengthenings were observed among women who feel stressed about caring for family members; and among men who feel stressed due to their family relationships as well as concerns about their own health. Discussion: Results confirm that people with self-perceived stress due to caregiving or health issues have shorter telomeres. The relationship between stress and telomere length differs between men and women. Gender relations exert a strong modifier effect on the relationship between stress and LTL: gender is related to perceived stress, telomere length, and apparently also to the way stress and LTL are related. The purpose of this work is to observe and analyze if a group of thirty students of an integrated English e-course could benefit from the explicit teaching of five lexical groups and the pedagogical principles behind the Lexical Approach. These low-intermediate students (CEFR, A2) took an Integrated English e-course at the School of Modern Languages, University of Costa Rica (UCR). To begin with, the target group took a short diagnostic test related to the five lexical groups to determine their prior knowledge on such aspect. To assess the level of improvement reached, the students received explicit instruction on five lexical groups as part of the writing components of this team-taught course. After this, the instructor revised 120 compositions (60 drafts and 60 final versions). Then, after intensive practice through a series of activities based on the Lexical Approach, they took a final instrument to measure how much they have learned throughout the virtual course. The results show a positive effect of explicit instruction of lexical units on student's writing outcomes and their post test. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the results of the proposed ductile precast concrete end-diaphragm beams for the transverse seismic resistance and protection of the substructure of slab-on-girder concrete bridges, tested at the facilities of LanammeUCR structural laboratory, University of Costa Rica, are detailed and discussed. The proposal can be used as part of an accelerated bridge construction (ABC) solution for moderate- to high-risk seismic areas. The hysteretic results showed adequate energy dissipation performance of the transverse end-diaphragm beams system; however, the envelopes obtained in both load directions evidenced a marked difference: the negative envelope showed a more noticeable ductile behavior and close enough to the predicted theoretical monotonic curve than the positive envelope. The damage observed at the precast concrete diaphragm beams was negligible, and the concrete deterioration was concentrated in the corners of the connections with the bridge girders, where the grout mortar at the joint gap evidenced a poor performance. Even if the bridge girders showed cracking both due to shear and flexure, the residual crack width was low: on average 0.10 mm. The final conclusion is that even if the test showed some issues that have to be revised, the system has the potential to demonstrate an outstanding performance under lateral seismic load. Understanding children requires empathy and the ability to use the sensibility and atmosphere in a group but also to sense individual needs and to consider these in educational acts. This requires well-trained observational skills, active listening skills and experience in the work with children. Where are aspects of educational ethics and empathy in an educational-scientific discourse situated? How are these related to each other and what kind of significance do they have during the work with children and adolescents in educational situations in school? These issues will be addressed theoretically and practically with the help of an intercultural survey with Costa Rica. Finally, an analysis of two examples of concepts for teacher training and an empiric analysis with students from both universities are being presented.

The participation of citizens in science projects has been increasing over the past two decades and has proven to be of great importance for biological research, specially for obtaining essential biodiversity data. Citizen science participation can be greatly improved through information and communication technologies (ICT). Therefore, our aim is to gather information about the biodiversity present in the Limón campus of the UCR through a combination of literature review and the participation of local citizens. We identified species of flora and fauna present in the campus through photographs and videos of organisms received from students and personnel of the Limón campus of the University of Costa Rica. Such visual material was collected by using ICT. We analyzed a total of 889 contributions from which we identified 144 species of fungi, plants and animals. The most used ICT to share photographs and videos was the multimedia messaging service WhatsApp, and organisms that usually generate negative perceptions like insects and reptiles were the most recorded. We conclude that citizen participation using ICT is an effective way to collect information for biological inventories. Such information can then be used to carried out environmental education and promote a location as a tourist destination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: In addition to limited funding, one of the limitations of scientific research in developing countries with a small population, such as Costa Rica, is the lack of human resource with the expertise needed to tackle research challenges. This is particularly the case for emerging fields such as Medical Physics. At the University of Costa Rica (UCR), much of the support to research projects comes from undergraduate students. The main challenge for the principal investigators (PI) is to train these undergraduates to be able to develop not only their assigned tasks, but also their critical thinking skills and knowledge of the field, in order to contribute meaningfully to the research. [1] This work presents the experiences of the Computational Medical Physics Laboratory (FIMEC, Laboratorio de Física Médica Computacional) in training undergraduate students (sophomore and up) for advanced scientific research using innovative educational resources and experiences. All research conducted at FIMEC requires knowledge of graduate level topics and methods in Medical Physics, particularly for the development of Monte Carlo simulations of radiation transport. Methods: Incoming students undergo an induction training including the reading of textbook chapters, scientific articles and theses, with topics in basic concepts on radiation physics, statistics, and anatomy fundamentals. Students undergo a series of tutorials on the computer languages to be used as part of their work (C++, Fortran and others). The training activities are organized in a sequence of increasing difficulty by the PI, to allow the gradual development of skills and knowledge in the students according to their research topic. The students meet regularly with the PI to present their progress and discuss their work. Scientific discussions are aided with the use of educational materials, such as wooden blocks, anatomical models, and board games. These educational materials have been selected to help illustrate and discuss topics related to Monte Carlo modeling. The materials are also used in the design of experiments and the discussion of results. All students are given a laboratory book in which to keep their notes from meetings and their individual work. All exiting students are required to provide documentation on their work, including code manuals, usage guides and a summary of their results. Results and discussion: Since this methodology was implemented at FIMEC in early 2019, 9 undergraduate students have been involved with the laboratory. Three of those students have submitted original work to an international peer-reviewed conference during 2019. Two of those abstracts were derived from work started in 2018 and one of the abstracts was proposed by students who started working at FIMEC in 2019. Two new internal research grants were submitted to UCR for 2020 based on the preliminary work of two other students. In all these works the students involved participated actively in the experiment design, development of software, analysis of results and submission process. In our experience, the use of wooden blocks has resulted to be particularly useful in the discussion of simulation geometries and the analysis of results, as it helps convey ideas both from and to the students in a direct and unequivocal fashion. The remaining students are currently at different stages of their initial training. Conclusions: The implementation of a learning environment where students undergo a series of organized learning activities allows undergraduate students to obtain a minimum of necessary knowledge to become active participants in scientific research. The use of educational materials as aids in the discussion of abstract technical concepts and experimental design facilitates the transference of ideas between the PI and the students and provides a way in which students can convey their own ideas.
