1. Guidelines for the adaptation of the project outcomes beyond the project boundaries

Abstract

Following the indications reported in Task 6.3.5 of the MADFORWATER project, MADFORWATER partners dedicated a relevant effort to the development of guidelines for the adaptation to other basins in Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia and to other MENA countries of the MADFORWATER tools, technologies and approaches. The general goal of these guidelines is to allow a generic stakeholder (such as a manager of a wastewater treatment plant, a wastewater company, an irrigation company, a farmer, the director of a basin authority, an officer of the Ministry of Irrigation) to perform the necessary activities in order to adapt the MADFORWATER technologies and water management tools to the specific context in which the considered technology or tool needs to be implemented. The adaptation guidelines developed in the framework of MADFORWATER and presented in this deliverable are relative to (i) the MADFORWATER approach for the analysis of water security, (ii) the project’s technologies for wastewater treatment and irrigation, and (iii) the two MADFORWATER decision support tools for wastewater management and for water & land management in agriculture. With regard to these two decision support tools, the adaptation guidelines are integrated by the description of the structure of two training courses that the MADFORWATER partners FHNW, IAMB and UPM can offer to potentially interested stakeholders. The adaptation guidelines presented in this deliverable are integrated by a consistent amount of material – such as the user manuals and computer codes for the decision support tools, the detailed description of the MADFORWATER approach for the assessment of water security and the fact-sheets of the MADFORWATER technologies – freely accessible to any interested stakeholder through the MADFORWATER website or the repositories in which the MADFORWATER dataset have been deposited (mainly, AMS Acta and Zenodo). The links for the direct download of this material are systematically reported in this deliverable.

Abstract

The general objective of the MADFORWATER project is to develop an integrated set of technological and management instruments for the enhancement of wastewater treatment, treated wastewater reuse for irrigation and water efficiency in agriculture, with the final aim to reduce water vulnerability in selected basins in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. In particular, Work Package 3 “Adaptation of technologies for efficient water management and treated wastewater reuse in agriculture” aims to investigate several technological and non-technological solutions to enhance the use of treated waste water as alternative source of water for the irrigation sector, and to adapt them to the local contexts of Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. Among the non–technological solutions, in Task 3.3 an agro physical (yield and water balance) - economic integrated model for land and water use optimization has been built and calibrated in the three case studies area of MADFORWATER, which are: the irrigated farming system in the Kafr-El- Sheikh Region in Egypt, the citrus farming system in Souss-Massa region in Morocco and the Nabeul Governorate in Tunisia. This deliverable presents the integrated model by describing the objective function to be maximized and the numerous physical (water resources availability, land use and climate change), technological, socio-economic (production costs, labour, prices) and water policy (pricing, licensing) constraints to be considered. In addition, the main outputs to be estimated have been identified, and the needed data to run the model that have been collected and used to calibrate it for the three case studies areas are also presented.

Abstract

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de exercícios livres na musculatura do assoalho pélvico, associados a exercícios de alto impacto como Jump e Step. O estudo foi realizado com 60 mulheres, de 20 a 65 anos, onde inicialmente foram submetidas a um teste de força da musculatura do assoalho pélvico, através do método bidigital, e após, foram realizadas aulas de Jump e Step associadas a exercícios livres na musculatura pélvica, durante 8 semanas, em 3 sessões de 60 minutos, em dias alternados. Ao final do treinamento, as mesmas foram submetidas novamente ao mesmo teste, sendo os resultados classificados de acordo com a Escala de Ortiz. Percebeu-se que após as 8 semanas de exercícios, 20% da amostra foi classificada com grau 0; 20% grau 2; e 60% grau 3. O fortalecimento da musculatura pélvica associada a exercícios de impacto foi eficiente em um programa de exercícios livres, considerando p≤0,05.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we discuss the problem of situatedness for agents perceiving and acting on the Web (namely, "Web agents"). Assuming Web agents are embodied on the World Wide Web, then we must define what a Web agent's body is. We first provide an abstract definition of a Web agent's body in terms of what it should comprise. Then we propose a concrete definition of it relying on Solid, a recent Web technology for Social Linked Data: we implement a Web agent's body as a data pod. Consequently, we coin the term pody to refer to the Web entity that embodies an agent on the Web with Solid. This paper summarises the findings of a working group from the Dagstuhl Seminar 23081: Agents on the Web (February 19-24, 2023).

Abstract

Software engineering has always had a strong influence in ontology engineering. This article aims to identify these influences for some of the major themes of modern software engineering : 1. Requirements engineering ; 2. Software development life cycle models ; 3. Modularization ; 4. Patterns; 5. Development environments ; 6. Version naming ; 7. Version control and editing workflow; 8. Automation ; 9. Continuous Integration and Deployment. For each theme we identify work in the field of ontology engineering that relates to it, and provide lessons learned from our work on the specification of the ETSI Smart Applications REFerence ontology (SAREF) development framework and workflow, and development of the Community SAREF Portal for user engagement, L'ingénierie logicielle a toujours eu une grande influence dans l'ingénierie des ontologies. Cet article a pour objectif d'identifier ces influences pour certains des grands thèmes de l'ingénierie logicielle moderne : 1. Ingénierie des besoins ; 2. Modèles de cycle de vie du développement logiciel ; 3. Modularisation ; 4. Patrons ; 5. Environnements de développement ; 6. Nommage des versions ; 7. Contrôle des versions et workflow d'édition ; 8. Automatisation ; 9. Intégration et déploiement continu. Pour chaque thème nous identifions des travaux du domaine de l'ingénierie des ontologies qui s'y rapportent, et apportons un retour d'expérience de notre travail de spécification du cadre de développement et du flux de travail de l'ontologie ETSI Smart Applications REFerence (SAREF), et développement du portail communautaire SAREF.

Abstract

This article belongs to the Section Applied Industrial Technologies. Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is a multidimensional and multidisciplinary diagnostic instrument that helps provide personalized care to older adults by evaluating their state of health. This evaluation is based on extensive data collection in order to develop a coordinated plan to maximize overall health with aging. In the social and economic context of growing ageing populations, medical experts can save time and effort if provided with interactive tools to efficiently assist them in doing CGAs, managing either standardized tests or data collection. Recent research proposes the use of social robots as the central part of this optimization of clinicians’ time and effort. This paper presents the first and last steps of the research made around the design and evaluation of the CLARC robot: fieldwork (analysis of needs and practices concerning clinical data management) and field trials (pilot experiment in real-life conditions in a rehab hospital). Based on an extensive literature review of social robotics applications for health and ageing, it discusses the practical and methodological questions raised around how to design and test assistive social robots for clinical routine, and questions the feasibility of an automated CGA procedure. Abstract

Childhood obesity is a worldwide epidemic. Mediterranean diet (MD) is inversely associated with childhood obesity, but the interaction with other environmental factors, such screen time, might influence the health benefits of a highMD adherence in adolescents. The aimof the present studywas to assess whether an association between MD and screen time exists in European adolescents. Moreover, we also explored whether sedentary time has a modulatory effect on the association between MD and adiposity. Adherence to the MD (24 h recalls), screen time (questionnaire), pubertal development, body mass index (BMI), fat mass index (FMI) and waist circumference (WC) were evaluated in 2053 adolescents (54.7% females), aged 12.5–17.5 years. In females, MD adherence was associated with lower BMI and FMI only when they were exposed to less than 338 min/day of screen time (81.8% of females);MD adherence was also associated with lowerWC only when females were exposed to less than 143 min/day of screen time (31.5% of females). Abstract

The rapid development of information and communication technologies and wireless sensor networks has transformed agriculture practices. New tools and methods are used to support farmers in their activities. This paper presents a context-aware system that automates irrigation decisions based on sensor measurements. Automatic irrigation overcomes the water shortage problem, and automatic sensor measurements reduce the observational work of farmers. This paper focuses on a method for developing context-aware systems using ontologies. Ontologies are used to solve heterogeneity issues in sensor measurements. Their main goal is to propose a shared data schema that precisely describes measurements to ease their interpretations. These descriptions are reusable by any machine and understandable by humans. The context-aware system also contains a decision support system based on a rules inference engine. We propose two new ontologies: The Context-Aware System Ontology addresses the development of the context-aware system in general. The Irrigation ontology automates a manual irrigation method named IRRINOV&reg, These ontologies reuse well-known ontologies such as the Semantic Sensor Network (SSN) and Smart Appliance REFerence (SAREF). The decision support system uses a set of rules with ontologies to infer daily irrigation decisions for farmers. This project uses real experimental data to evaluate the implementation of the decision support system.

Abstract

Few studies have evaluated the association between dietary free sugars intake (FSI) and obesity in adolescents. We examined the relation between FSI and their contributors from the main food groups and obesity in European adolescents. We included 843 adolescents (51.6% male) from the cross-sectional HELENA study with two completed 24 h recalls and anthropometric data. Linear mixed models were applied to investigate the relation between FSI and different anthropometric indices. Odds ratios for having a high body mass index (BMI) were also estimated by multilevel ordinal regression. Total FSI was higher in males than females (102.60 g and 87.58 g, respectively, p &lt, 0.001). No effect was observed between free sugar from the main food groups and BMI. Consumers of FSI from &ldquo, cakes, pies and biscuits&rdquo, in males (odd ratio (OR) = 0.455, 95% Confidence interval (CI) 0.251, 0.824) and from &ldquo, breakfast cereals&rdquo, in females had a lower probability of having obesity (OR = 0.423, 95%CI 0.204, 0.878), whereas females consuming FSI from &lsquo, fruit and vegetables juices&rsquo, had a higher probability of obesity (OR= 2.733, 95% CI 1.286, 5.810). This study provides no evidence that increased FSI is associated with obesity in adolescents. Further studies are needed to assess the longitudinal exposure to FSI and their effect on obesity development.

Abstract

This paper includes data collected by the TESS mission, which are publicly available from the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST). et al., Over the course of its history, the Milky Way has ingested multiple smaller satellite galaxies. Although these accreted stellar populations can be forensically identified as kinematically distinct structures within the Galaxy, it is difficult in general to date precisely the age at which any one merger occurred. Recent results have revealed a population of stars that were accreted via the collision of a dwarf galaxy, called Gaia–Enceladus, leading to substantial pollution of the chemical and dynamical properties of the Milky Way. Here we identify the very bright, naked-eye star ν Indi as an indicator of the age of the early in situ population of the Galaxy. We combine asteroseismic, spectroscopic, astrometric and kinematic observations to show that this metal-poor, alpha-element-rich star was an indigenous member of the halo, and we measure its age to be 11.0±0.7 (stat) ±0.8 (sys) billion years. The star bears hallmarks consistent with having been kinematically heated by the Gaia–Enceladus collision. Its age implies that the earliest the merger could have begun was 11.6 and 13.2 billion years ago, at 68% and 95% confidence, respectively. Abstract

Obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are worldwide major health challenges. The Mediterranean diet (MD) is associated with a better cardiometabolic profile, but these beneficial e ects may be influenced by genetic variations, modulating the predisposition to obesity or MetS. The aim was to assess whether interaction e ects occur between an obesity genetic risk score (obesity-GRS) and the MD on adiposity and MetS in European adolescents. Multiple linear regression models were used to assess the interaction e ects of an obesity-GRS and the MD on adiposity and MetS and its components. Interaction e ects between theMDon adiposity and MetS were observed in both sex groups (p < 0.05). However, those interaction e ects were only expressed in a certain number of adolescents, when a limited number of risk alleles were present. Regarding adiposity, a total of 51.1% males and 98.7% females had lower body mass index (BMI) as a result of higher MD adherence. Concerning MetS, only 9.9% of males with higher MD adherence had lower MetS scores. However, the same e ect was observed in 95.2% of females. Abstract

International audience; Large scale cultural heritage datasets and computational methods for the humanities research framework are the two pillars of Digital Humanities, a research field aiming to expand humanities studies beyond specific sources and periods to address macroscope research questions on broad human phenomena. In this regard, the development of machine-readable semantically enriched data models based on a cross-disciplinary "language" of phenomena is critical for achieving the interoperabil-ity of research data. This contribution reports, documents, and discusses the development of a model for the study of reading experiences as part of the EU JPI-CH project Reading Europe Advanced Data Investigation Tool (READ-IT). Through the discussion of the READ-IT ontology of reading experience, this contribution will highlight and address three challenges emerging from the development of a conceptual model for the support of research on cultural heritage. Firstly, this contribution addresses modelling for multidisciplinary research. Secondly, this work addresses the development of an ontology of reading experience, under the light of the experience of previous projects, and of ongoing and future research developments. Lastly, this contribution addresses the validation of a conceptual model in the context of ongoing research, the lack of a consolidated set of theories and of a consensus of domain experts.

Abstract

Serendipita indica can colonize a broad range of hosts, conferring improved stress tolerance and performance under adverse conditions. The underlying molecular mechanisms have the potential to improve agricultural practices in a climate change scenario., Global climate change is arguably one of the biggest threats of modern times and has already led to a wide range of impacts on the environment, economy, and society. Owing to past emissions and climate system inertia, global climate change is predicted to continue for decades even if anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions were to stop immediately. In many regions, such as central Europe and the Mediterranean region, the temperature is likely to rise by 2–5 °C and annual precipitation is predicted to decrease. Expected heat and drought periods followed by floods, and unpredictable growing seasons, are predicted to have detrimental effects on agricultural production systems, causing immense economic losses and food supply problems. To mitigate the risks of climate change, agricultural innovations counteracting these effects need to be embraced and accelerated. To achieve maximum improvement, the required agricultural innovations should not focus only on crops but rather pursue a holistic approach including the entire ecosystem. Over millions of years, plants have evolved in close association with other organisms, particularly soil microbes that have shaped their evolution and contemporary ecology. Many studies have already highlighted beneficial interactions among plants and the communities of microorganisms with which they coexist. Questions arising from these discoveries are whether it will be possible to decipher a common molecular pattern and the underlying biochemical framework of interspecies communication, and whether such knowledge can be used to improve agricultural performance under environmental stress conditions. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of plant interactions with fungal endosymbionts found in extreme ecosystems. Special attention will be paid to the interaction of plants with the symbiotic root-colonizing endophytic fungus Serendipita indica, which has been developed as a model system for beneficial plant–fungus interactions.

Abstract

International audience; Semantic technologies have recently gained significant support in a number of communities, in particular the IoT community. An important problem to be solved is that, on the one hand, it is clear that the value of IoT increases significantly with the availability of information from a wide variety of domains. On the other hand, existing solutions target specific applications or application domains and there is no easy way of sharing information between the resulting silos. Thus, a solution is needed to enable interoperability across information silos. As there is a huge heterogeneity regarding IoT technologies on the lower levels, the semantic level is seen as a promising approach for achieving interoperability (i.e. semantic interoperability) to unify IoT device description, data, bring common interaction, data exploration, etc.

Abstract

Nitrogen molecules are promoted to excited neutral states during femtosecond laser pulse filamentary propagation in atmosphere, leading to a characteristic UV fluorescence. Using a laser-induced fluorescence depletion technique, we measure the formation dynamics of these excited neutral nitrogen molecules with femtosecond time resolution. We find that the excited neutral molecules are formed in an unexpected ultrafast timescale of $\ensuremath{\sim}4\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{ps}$ at 1 bar and $\ensuremath{\sim}120\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{ps}$ at 30 mbar pressure. From this observation we deduce that the excitation of neutral ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ occurs via multiple collisions with hot free electrons. Numerical simulations based on rate equations reproduce well this ultrafast formation time and its dependence on gas pressure, and thus support this interpretation.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents a novel tool capable of collecting thermal signatures inside a building by using low-cost IR temperature sensors mounted on-board an aerial platform. The proposed system aims to facilitate the detection of heat loss inside buildings, which is a key aspect for improving energy efficiency in large commercial or industrial buildings. Current detection systems usually require manual labor as well as the use of expensive instrumentation. The proposed system on the other hand, relies on the use of a small unmanned aerial vehicle carrying low-cost thermopile IR sensors. Moreover, the system delivers a fast temperature sensing scheme and it provides coverage to inaccessible areas, thus overcoming the limitations of current mobile platforms which use ground robots. Different experiments were carried out in order to assess the behavior of the sensors as well as to validate the full system. Moreover, the hypothesis that thermopile IR sensors can be used to track temperature signature on-the-fly is validated experimentally with the use of the proposed system over different targets.

Abstract

Linked Open Data (LOD) is the publicly available RDF data in the Web. Each LOD entity is identfied by a URI and accessible via HTTP. LOD encodes globalscale knowledge potentially available to any human as well as artificial intelligence that may want to benefit from it as background knowledge for supporting their tasks. LOD has emerged as the backbone of applications in diverse fields such as Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, Computer Vision, Speech Recognition, and many more. Nevertheless, regardless of the specific tasks that LOD-based tools aim to address, the reuse of such knowledge may be challenging for diverse reasons, e.g. semantic heterogeneity, provenance, and data quality. As aptly stated by Heath et al. Linked Data might be outdated, imprecise, or simply wrong": there arouses a necessity to investigate the problem of linked data validity. This work reports a collaborative effort performed by nine teams of students, guided by an equal number of senior researchers, attending the International Semantic Web Research School (ISWS 2018) towards addressing such investigation from different perspectives coupled with different approaches to tackle the issue.

Abstract

International audience; The Semantic Sensor Network Ontology, popularly knownasSSN, was developed by an Incubator Group of the World Wide WebConsortium (W3C) over 2009 to 2011. Subsequently, the W3C and theOpen Geospatial Consortium (OGC) joined forces to update the SSNas informed by experience, to harmonize it with OGC’s O&M, and topublish a new version to be endorsed as both a W3C Recommendationand an OGC standard in late 2017. The major contribution of the newSSN is a modular structure designed to be more convenient for ontologyengineers and data custodians. It also slightly extends the coverage ofthe previous SSN with new terms for sampling and actuation. SSN re-tains the ability to comprehensively represent:sensorsin terms of whatthey can sense, and what and how they do sense;observationsin termsof what they measure and what values they find;systems(or networks)of sensors in terms of sensor components and how they are deployed;andreal-world objects(calledfeatures of interest, OGC-style) in terms oftheir physical properties, what can sense them, and what observations ofthem have been made. A few little-used SSN terms have been deprecated,and several others have been renamed. For a comprehensive descriptionof new SSN the reader is referred to the specification [10]. A full descrip-tion of the scope, design rationale and additions, with examples of itsapplication are presented in [11].

Abstract

International audience; This paper reports on the demonstration of quantum cascade detectors (QCDs) based on ZnO/ ZnMgO quantum wells (QWs) grown by molecular beam epitaxy on an m-plane ZnO substrate. The TM-polarized intersubband absorption is peaked at a 3 lm wavelength. The sample has been processed in the form of square mesas with sizes ranging from 10_10 lm2 up to 100_100 lm2. The I-V characteristics reveal that 86% of the 260 devices are operational and that the surface leakage current is negligible at room temperature, which is not the case at 77 K. The photocurrent spectroscopy of 100_100 lm2 QCDs reveals a photocurrent resonance at a 2.8 lm wavelength, i.e., slightly blue-shifted with respect to the intersubband absorption peak. The photocurrent persists up to room temperature. The calibrated peak responsivity amounts to 0.15mA/W under irradiation at Brewster’s angle of incidence. This value allows us to estimate the transfer efficiency (1.15%) of the photoexcited electrons into the active QW of the next period. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Ecotechnologies [ADD1_IRSTEA]Équiper l'agriculture; International audience; Precision agriculture is nowadays getting more and more attention in Europe. Due to the common water shortage problem, precision irrigation could become a key activity to save and use water in a more sustainable way. This paper builds upon an automatic irrigation system implemented as a context-aware system in which context is acquired thanks to a wireless sensor network. In such system, ontologies are used to solve integration problem of heterogeneous data provided by different types of sensors. Moreover, ontologies enable reasoning over these data to enrich the context. The automatic irrigation system will be installed on the pilot site of Irstea called AgroTechnoPole, located in Montoldre. The main goal of this paper is to analyze the SOSA/SSN and SAREF standard ontologies in regards to the ontological requirements that arise from the AgroTechnoPole use case.

Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Ecotechnologies [TR1_IRSTEA]INSPIRE [ADD1_IRSTEA]Équiper l'agriculture; National audience; L’agriculture de précision est un des leviers importants d’amélioration de l’agriculture en Europe. Cette approche peut notamment s’appliquer à l’irrigation en permettant aux agriculteurs d’économiser l’eau ou de l’utiliser au bon moment sans excès. Cet article présente brièvement les prémices d’un système d’irrigation automatisé pour l’AgroTechnoPôle d’Irstea. Ce système est un système contextuel adaptatif où les ontologiessont utilisées pour résoudre les problèmes d’intégration des données hétérogènes. Ensuite un raisonnement est appliqué sur ces données pour déduire les états des entités et commander le système d’irrigation. L’objectif principal de cet article est d’analyser les ontologies SSN et SAREF produites par deux organismes de normalisation. Nous avons déterminé les besoins de notre système d’irrigation et ensuite nous avons identifié si ces besoins étaient abordés par ces deux ontologies.

Any further distribution of this work must maintain attribution to the author(s) and the title of the work, journal citation and DOI., The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since 2014 July. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the 14th from SDSS overall (making this Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes the data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (2014-2016 July) public. Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey; the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data-driven machine-learning algorithm known as ¿The Cannon¿ and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from the SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS web site (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. Abstract

International audience; Small files are known to pose major performance challenges for file systems. Yet, such workloads are increasingly common in a number of Big Data Analytics workflows or large-scale HPC simulations. These challenges are mainly caused by the common architecture of most state-of-the-art file systems needing one or multiple metadata requests before being able to read from a file. Small input file size causes the overhead of this metadata management to gain relative importance as the size of each file decreases. In this paper we propose a set of techniques leveraging consistent hashing and dynamic metadata replication to significantly reduce this metadata overhead. We implement such techniques inside a new file system named TýrFS, built as a thin layer above the Týr object store. We prove that TýrFS increases small file access performance up to one order of magnitude compared to other state-of-the-art file systems, while only causing a minimal impact on file write throughput.

Abstract

International audience; A change in the Kondo lattice behavior of bulk YbAl3 has been observed when the alloy is shaped into nanoparticles (≈12 nm). Measurements of the electrical resistivity show inhibited coherence effects and deviation from the standard Fermi liquid behavior (T2-dependence). These results are interpreted as being due to the effect of the disruption of the periodicity of the array of Kondo ions provoked by the size reduction process. Additionally, the ensemble of randomly placed nanoparticles also triggers an extra source of electronic scattering at very low temperatures (≈15 K) due to quantum interference effects.

Abstract

International audience; The joint W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) and OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) Spatial Data on the Web (SDW) Working Group developed a set of ontologies to describe sensors, actuators, samplers as well as their observations, actuation, and sampling activities. The ontologies have been published both as a W3C recommendation and as an OGC implementation standard. The set includes a lightweight core module called SOSA (Sensor, Observation, Sampler, and Actuator) available at: http://www.w3.org/ns/sosa/, and a more expressive extension module called SSN (Semantic Sensor Network) available at: http://www.w3.org/ns/ssn/. Together they describe systems of sensors and actuators, observations, the used procedures, the subjects and their properties being observed or acted upon, samples and the process of sampling, and so forth. The set of ontologies adopts a modular architecture with SOSA as a self-contained core that is extended by SSN and other modules to add expressivity and breadth. The SOSA/SSN ontologies are able to support a wide range of applications and use cases, including satellite imagery, large-scale scientific monitoring, industrial and household infrastructures, social sensing, citizen science, observation-driven ontology engineering, and the Internet of Things. In this paper we give an overview of the ontologies and discuss the rationale behind key design decisions, reporting on the differences between the new SSN ontology presented here and its predecessor [9] developed by the W3C Semantic Sensor Network Incubator group (the SSN-XG). We present usage examples and describe alignment modules that foster interoperability with other ontologies.

Abstract

International audience; Cloud developers traditionally rely on purpose-specific services to provide the storage model they need for an application. In contrast, HPC developers have a much more limited choice, typically restricted to a centralized parallel file system for persistent storage. Unfortunately, these systems often offer low performance when subject to highly concurrent, conflicting I/O patterns. This makes difficult the implementation of inherently concurrent data structures such as distributed shared logs. Yet, this data structure is key to applications such as computational steering, data collection from physical sensor grids, or discrete event generators. In this paper we tackle this issue. We present SLoG, shared log middleware providing a shared log abstraction over a parallel file system, designed to circumvent the aforementioned limitations. We evaluate SLoG's design on up to 100,000 cores of the Theta supercomputer: the results show high append velocity at scale while also providing substantial benefits for other persistent backend storage systems.

Abstract

National audience; The Internet of Things (IoT) envisions an ecosystem in which physical entities, systems and information resources bridge the gap between the physical and the virtual world. The existing heterogeneity in such physical entities, systems and information resources, intensified by the fact that they originate from different sectors and according to different perspectives, poses numerous challenges to the IoT vision.One of them is the need for interoperability, since capturing the maximum value from the IoT involves multiple IoT systems working together and, therefore, seamlessly interchanging information. However, successfully achieving interoperability requires coping with different aspects, not only technological but also social and/or regulatory ones. This talk will address how these aspects influence semantic interoperability, taking into account that such interoperability requires being aware of both the information interchanged and the data model (i.e., ontology) of such information.

Abstract

International audience; Planning a visit to Expo Milano 2015 or simply touring in Milan are activities that require a certain amount of a priori knowledge of the city. In this paper, we present the process of building such comprehensive knowledge bases that contain descriptions of events and activities, places and sights, transportation facilities as well as social activities, collected from numerous static, near-and real-time local and global data providers, including hyper local sources such as the Expo Milano 2015 official services and several social media platforms. Entities in the 3cixty KB are deduplicated, interlinked and enriched using semantic technologies. The 3cixty KB is empowering the ExplorMI 360 multi-device application, which has been officially endorsed by the E015 Technical Management Board and has gained the patronage of Expo Milano in 2015, thus has offered a unique testing scenario for the 20 million visitors along the 6 months of the exhibit. In 2016-2017, new knowledge bases have been created for the cities of London, Madeira and Singapore, as well as for the entire French Cote d'Azur area. Abstract

Faithful transmission of the genetic information is essential in all living organisms. DNA replication is therefore a critical step of cell proliferation, because of the potential occurrence of replication errors or DNA damage when progression of a replication fork is hampered causing replicative stress. Like other types of DNA damage, replicative stress activates the DNA damage response, a signaling cascade allowing cell cycle arrest and repair of lesions. The replicative DNA polymerase « (Pol «) was shown to activate the S-phase checkpoint in yeast in response to replicative stress, but whether this mechanism functions in multicellular eukaryotes remains unclear. Here, we explored the genetic interaction between Pol « and the main elements of the DNA damage response in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). We found that mutations affecting the polymerase domain of Pol « trigger ATRdependent signaling leading to SOG1 activation, WEE1-dependent cell cycle inhibition, and tolerance to replicative stress induced by hydroxyurea, but result in enhanced sensitivity to a wide range of DNA damaging agents. Using knock-down lines, we also provide evidence for the direct role of Pol « in replicative stress sensing. Together, our results demonstrate that the role of Pol « in replicative stress sensing is conserved in plants, and provide, to our knowledge, the first genetic dissection of the downstream signaling events in a multicellular eukaryote. © 2017 American Society of Plant Biologists. Contains fulltext : 137671.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) The {VESSEL12} ({VES}sel {SE}mentation in the {L}ung) challenge objectively compares the performance of different algorithms to identify vessels in thoracic computed tomography ({CT}) scans. Vessel segmentation is fundamental in computer aided processing of data generated by 3D imaging modalities. As manual vessel segmentation is prohibitively time consuming, any real world application requires some form of automation. Several approaches exist for automated vessel segmentation, but judging their relative merits is difficult due to a lack of standardized evaluation. We present an annotated reference dataset containing 20 {CT} scans and propose nine categories to perform a comprehensive evaluation of vessel segmentation algorithms from both academia and industry. Twenty algorithms participated in the {VESSEL12} challenge, held at International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging ({ISBI}) 2012. All results have been published at the {VESSEL12} website http://{VESSEL12}.grand-challenge.org. The challenge remains ongoing and open to new participants. Our three contributions are: (1) an annotated reference dataset available online for evaluation of new algorithms; (2) a quantitative scoring system for objective comparison of algorithms; and (3) performance analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the various vessel segmentation methods in the presence of various lung diseases.

Abstract

The sessile nature of plants forced them to evolve mechanisms to prioritize their responses to simultaneous stresses, including colonization by microbes or nutrient starvation. Here, we compare the genomes of a beneficial root endophyte, Colletotrichum tofieldiae and its pathogenic relative C. incanum, and examine the transcriptomes of both fungi and their plant host Arabidopsis during phosphate starvation. Although the two species diverged only 8.8 million years ago and have similar gene arsenals, we identify genomic signatures indicative of an evolutionary transition from pathogenic to beneficial lifestyles, including a narrowed repertoire of secreted effector proteins, expanded families of chitin-binding and secondary metabolism-related proteins, and limited activation of pathogenicity-related genes in planta. We show that beneficial responses are prioritized in C. tofieldiae-colonized roots under phosphate-deficient conditions, whereas defense responses are activated under phosphate-sufficient conditions. These immune responses are retained in phosphate-starved roots colonized by pathogenic C. incanum, illustrating the ability of plants to maximize survival in response to conflicting stresses., Colletotrichum tofieldiae is a beneficial root endophyte, whereas the closely related C. incanum is pathogenic. Here the authors compare the genomes and transcriptomes during host plant interaction and demonstrate that the host plant can respond differently to the beneficial endophyte according to phosphate status.

Abstract

International audience; The manuscript offers a methodology to solve an analytical model of a heterogeneous elastic problem for curvilinear layered structures, using the two scales asymptotic homogenization method (AHM). The local problems and the mechanical properties of the local functions were derived. The analytical modeling for the linear elastic problem considering quasi-periodic multi-layered curvilinear composites and the corresponding homogenized problem were obtained. The analytic expression of the effective stress for curvilinear composites is presented. In order to validate the presented model, comparisons with a computational modeling and experimental results for Fibonacci laminated composite and wavy laminated structure are given. The methodology is applied to composites with thickness variation where the effective coefficients were computed and a comparison between the results reported by AHM and numerical analysis given by finite element method (FEM) is presented. Finally, the aorta is studied as a curvilinear laminated shell composite and the above results were used to determinate the effective elastic tensor for healthy and unhealthy aorta using AHM and FEM.

Abstract

A hybrid model describing the acoustic properties of plates with macroperforations that can be unevenly distributed on the plate surface and backed by woven or precision woven meshes with microscopic perforations is proposed. The plate perforations may be of circular or rectangular shapes. Since the perforated plate may not necessarily be considered as an equivalent fluid, its impedance is calculated by the Maa model [Noise Control Eng. J. 29, 77-84 (1987)], whereas the Johnson-Champoux-Allard model [J. Appl. Phys. 70, 1975-1979 (1991)] is used for the mesh, considered as an equivalent fluid. A simple model for the elementary cell of the mesh structure is proposed in order to calculate parameters that can be considered as the thermal characteristic length Λ' and the viscous characteristic length Λ. An effective airflow resistivity is introduced to account for the increase of particle velocity through the mesh placed behind the carrying macroperforated plate and is used in the transfer matrix approach to obtain the impedance of the whole multilayer system. The hybrid model seems to represent a good approach of this multilayer system. Abstract

International audience; Intelligent systems designed to reduce highway fatalities have been widely applied in the automotive sector in the last decade. Of all users of transport systems, pedestrians are the most vulnerable in crashes as they are unprotected. This paper deals with an autonomous intelligent emergency system designed to avoid collisions with pedestrians. The system consists of a fuzzy controller based on the time-to-collision estimate - obtained via a vision-based system - and the wheel-locking probability - obtained via the vehicle's CAN bus - that generates a safe braking action. The system has been tested in a real car - a convertible Citroën C3 Pluriel - equipped with an automated electro-hydraulic braking system capable of working in parallel with the vehicle's original braking circuit. The system is used as a last resort in the case that an unexpected pedestrian is in the lane and all the warnings have failed to produce a response from the driver.

Abstract

Crop multi-model ensembles (MME) have proven to be effective in increasing the accuracy of simulations in modelling experiments. However, the ability of MME to capture crop responses to changes in sowing dates and densities has not yet been investigated. These management interventions are some of the main levers for adapting cropping systems to climate change. Here, we explore the performance of a MME of 29 wheat crop models to predict the effect of changing sowing dates and rates on yield and yield components, on two sites located in a high-yielding environment in New Zealand. The experiment was conducted for 6 years and provided 50 combinations of sowing date, sowing density and growing season. We show that the MME simulates seasonal growth of wheat well under standard sowing conditions, but fails under early sowing and high sowing rates. The comparison between observed and simulated in-season fraction of intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (FIPAR) for early sown wheat shows that the MME does not capture the decrease of crop above ground biomass during winter months due to senescence. Abstract

These days, mass-produced vehicles benefit from research on Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). One prime example of ITS is vehicle Cruise Control (CC), which allows it to maintain a pre-defined reference speed, to economize on fuel or energy consumption, to avoid speeding fines, or to focus all of the driver’s attention on the steering of the vehicle. However, achieving efficient Cruise Control is not easy in roads or urban streets where sudden changes of the speed limit can happen, due to the presence of unexpected obstacles or maintenance work, causing, in inattentive drivers, traffic accidents. In this communication we present a new Infrastructure to Vehicles (I2V) communication and control system for intelligent speed control, which is based upon Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for identification of traffic signals on the road, and high accuracy vehicle speed measurement with a Hall effect-based sensor. A fuzzy logic controller, based on sensor fusion of the information provided by the I2V infrastructure, allows the efficient adaptation of the speed of the vehicle to the circumstances of the road. The performance of the system is checked empirically, with promising results. Abstract

International audience; Eye tracking can serve as a gateway to studying the mind. For this reason it has been adopted by a diverse range of scientific communities. With the improvement of the quality of head-mounted virtual reality devices (HMDs) over the past 10 years, eye tracking has been added to capture gaze in immersive environments. The use of HMDs with eye tracking is increasing significantly and so is the need for a toolbox enabling consensus about eye tracking methods in 3D. We present the Salient360! toolbox: it implements functions to identify saccades and fixations and output gaze characteristics (e.g., fixation duration or saccade directions), to generate saliency maps, fixation maps, and scanpath data. It also implements routines made to compare gaze data that were adapted to 3D. Abstract

International audience; The article discusses the process of versioning for ontologies and semantic artefacts developed using Semantic Web technologies. We describe methods for encoding versioning and other relevant information in metadata properties and we illustrate with examples from the MOD2.0 specification. Building on our experiences with the AgroPortal ontology repository and the Linked Open Vocabulary, we raise several questions, such as which metadata properties to use, how metadata values should be coordinated, and what stay the same over versions, and what should change. We propose recommendations for better versioning ontologies with clear semantics-identifiers, descriptions, status, dates, links-and suggests that the recommendations can be generalized to any digital objects that need to be versioned and semantically described.

Abstract

International audience; Tree stem respiration (R S) is a substantial component of the forest carbon balance. The mass balance approach uses stem CO 2 efflux and internal xylem fluxes to sum up R S , while the oxygen-based method assumes O 2 influx as a proxy of R S. So far, both approaches have yielded inconsistent results regarding the fate of respired CO 2 in tree stems, a major challenge for quantifying forest carbon dynamics. We collected a data set of CO 2 efflux, O 2 influx, xylem CO 2 concentration, sap flow, sap pH, stem temperature, nonstructural carbohydrates concentration and potential phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) capacity on mature beech trees to identify the sources of differences between approaches. The ratio of CO 2 efflux to O 2 influx was consistently below unity (0.7) along a 3-m vertical gradient, but internal fluxes did not bridge the gap between influx and efflux, nor did we find evidence for changes in respiratory substrate use. PEPC capacity was comparable with that previously reported in green current-year twigs. Although we could not reconcile differences between approaches, results shed light on the uncertain fate of CO 2 respired by parenchyma cells across the sapwood. Unexpected high values of PEPC
