University students continue to be discriminated against based on their gender, race, ethnicity, sexual preferences, mental health conditions, religious beliefs, etc. Discrimination based on gender and physical appearance, such as skin color, race or ethnicity, stands out for being the one to which the most experiences of discrimination are attributed. The purpose of this research is to understand how experiences of discrimination based on physical appearance influence the academic experience and emotional well-being in university students. Students (12 in total) from a private university in the metropolitan area of Monterrey who indicated that they had experienced discrimination were interviewed. A grounded theory approach was used for their analysis. Different forms of discrimination based on physical appearance were found, such as discrimination based on skin color, weight, height and/or the use of tattoos that are interpreted as a stigma of social status. These influence students' self-esteem and stress, in addition to having negative academic effects such as demotivation and lack of concentration. Students have limited personal resources to face these actions received, and they do not find a close link to request help from university staff. These findings are discussed in light of other studies of discrimination based on physical appearance in universities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

El objetivo general del estudio es determinar la percepción de los estudiantes de una universidad privada en Asunción frente a las medidas de seguridad implementadas en un caso específico de amenaza de tiroteo en el año 2023. El enfoque del estudio es cuantitativo, de diseño no experimental de corte transversal y alcance descriptivo. La población considerada para el estudio estuvo conformada por 8089 estudiantes, determinándose una muestra de 385 personas. La tasa de respuesta fue de 99,7% (384). Los criterios de inclusión considerados fueron estar activo e inscripto en la modalidad presencial, tomar clases presenciales en la sede central y estar de acuerdo en completar la encuesta. Se utilizó la encuesta como recolección de datos mediante un cuestionario diseñado con Google Forms de 12 preguntas. Los resultados más relevantes fueron: 41,9% se encuentra muy de acuerdo que sus pertenencias sean revisadas al ingreso a la institución y 39,3% muy conforme con los mecanismos de seguridad implementados por la universidad. Otras opiniones sobre las medidas de seguridad para prevenir y responder a una amenaza de tiroteo son: uso de detectores de metales manuales, mayor presencia de guardias de seguridad, proponer a la administración el abordaje de la salud mental en la malla curricular, habilitar botón de pánico, simulacros de emergencia y rayos-X para los bolsos y mochilas. Se concluye que el estudiantado se encuentra satisfecho ante las dos dimensiones analizadas: seguridad institucional ante el peligro e identificación, satisfacción y sensación de seguridad por parte del estudiante.

El objetivo de la investigación es determinar la relación entre la calidad del servicio y la satisfacción del estudiante en una universidad privada. Se enfocó a lo cuantitativo, transversal y correlacional. La población estuvo conformada por 1326 estudiantes, muestra aplicada de forma aleatoria a 298 estudiantes, mediante el muestreo estratificado. Se empleó la encuesta con un cuestionario compuesto por 2 variables, 9 dimensiones y 34 ítems en el 2023. Los datos fueron analizados con SPSS v27. Los resultados indicaron un alfa de Cronbach (α) de 0.980 para 34 elementos (Calidad de servicio α=0.966 y Satisfacción del estudiante α=0.962). Además, el coeficiente Rho de Spearman fue de 0.880, demostrando una correlación positiva muy fuerte entre las variables, con un nivel de significancia de 0.000

Durante el primer tercio del siglo XX en España, como en la mayoría de países europeos y americanos, las vías para ser historiador profesional eran limitadas y las posibilidades eran reducidas. En las décadas de 1920 y 1930 hubo un pequeño grupo de mujeres tituladas –aunque no siempre– que, al menos durante un corto periodo de su vida, fueron (o trataron de ser) historiadoras profesionales. Algunas incluso llegaron a doctorarse, a impartir docencia en la universidad y a investigar en centros especializados. Sin embargo, ante las escasas expectativas de conseguir un puesto de trabajo estable, la práctica totalidad de ellas optó por dedicarse a ámbitos laborales cuyo proceso de selección fuese más objetivo y que ofrecieran mayor estabilidad laboral y económica. A pesar de este paso atrás en sus aspiraciones, muchas de estas historiadoras siguieron investigando durante años de forma semi-profesional, compaginándolo con su trabajo en centros de enseñanza secundaria, archivos o bibliotecas.

[Objetivo] El objetivo de este estudio es caracterizar tareas matemáticas evaluadas en exámenes, centrándose en rasgos didácticos relacionados con el significado de los contenidos matemáticos que tratan y con aspectos cognitivos. Así como describir la evolución de estos rasgos a través del tiempo. [Metodología] En este estudio descriptivo longitudinal se llevó a cabo un análisis de contenido de 568 tareas matemáticas evaluadas en 51 exámenes, a lo largo de 17 periodos lectivos consecutivos entre 2014 y 2022. El análisis se realizó en el contexto de un curso de Cálculo Diferencial e Integral impartido en una universidad en Costa Rica. La información se organizó e interpretó utilizando un sistema de siete variables relacionadas con rasgos didácticos propios del análisis de tareas matemáticas escolares. [Resultados] Las tareas matemáticas evaluadas se distinguen por variedad de contenidos y predominio de representación verbal-simbólica, situación científica exclusivamente matemática y demanda cognitiva a nivel de procedimientos sin conexiones. El predominio de las situaciones científicas exclusivamente matemáticas fue constante a lo largo del tiempo. Mientras que, a partir de cierto periodo, la representación verbal-simbólica y los procedimientos sin conexiones tendieron a disminuir a favor de la representación múltiple y de los procedimientos con conexiones. [Conclusiones] Las tareas matemáticas evaluadas reflejan parcialmente rasgos relacionados con el significado de los contenidos matemáticos y con aspectos cognitivos esenciales para el aprendizaje del cálculo. La evolución a lo largo del tiempo muestra que se ha progresado en ciertos rasgos, aunque en otros todavía existe un amplio margen de mejora.

La investigación tiene por objetivo confrontar los mecanismos para el fomento de la cultura investigativa en las universidades, utilizando la planificación estratégica como herramienta de gestión. Se trata de una investigación de tipo documental-propositiva, donde el documento considera la relación entre la promoción de investigación y gestión, mostrando inicialmente el estado actual de las universidades –con énfasis en América Latina- para luego presentar las bases conceptuales de la investigación como proceso cultural abierto y, finalmente, presentar los fundamentos de la gestión mediante gerencia estratégica. Los resultados valorados permiten establecer que el fomento de una cultura investigativa, deberá estar sustentada firmemente en la generación de una política, cuyo eje curricular central sea la investigación, donde la participación de los stakeholders internos y externos sea incluyente e intensiva. De acuerdo con lo anterior, las relaciones interdependientes estarán sustentadas por la funcionalidad organizativa, la co-responsabilidad, la calidad en la generación del conocimiento y administración bajo pensamiento estratégico futurista. Estos principios rectores serán soportados por redes virtuales y presenciales de avanzada tecnología, que permitan la participación, comunicación y delegación horizontal y la difusión universal del conocimiento.

La educación superior en Paraguay enfrenta un momento complejo, demandando un análisis crítico de las políticas educativas actuales. Aunque se ha observado un aumento en la matrícula estudiantil y avances en tecnologías educativas, persisten discrepancias entre el número de graduados, sus posiciones laborales y el crecimiento económico. Se propone plantear propuestas que busquen reformar regulaciones actuales, destacando la importancia de revisar la autonomía universitaria, la internacionalización como fin misional y reevaluar criterios evaluativos. Se enfatiza la necesidad de innovar las estrategias para la capacitación continua frente al avance tecnológico. La conexión entre educación superior y las demandas del mercado laboral debe fortalecerse, incorporando aspectos sociales y humanos en la formación. La interdisciplinariedad se presenta como esencial, promoviendo una comprensión integral de sistemas y procesos sociales mediante cambios curriculares. Las reformas buscan no solo mejorar la calidad académica, sino formar individuos éticos y conscientes socialmente, para contribuir al progreso social sostenible. Con este análisis se pretende sentar las bases críticas, considerando la integración del conocimiento científico en la elaboración de políticas públicas vinculadas a la educación.

El acoso sexual constituye un fenómeno cotidiano que actualmente está acaparando una considerable atención en Ecuador, tanto por la denuncia del movimiento feminista como por su mayor visibilidad a través de los medios de comunicación. El objetivo de este artículo es identificar la percepción subjetiva del estudiantado universitario ecuatoriano sobre el acoso sexual en los centros de educación superior. En específico, nos interesa comprender las particularidades culturales que pueden limitar la eficacia de las estrategias orientadas a la prevención del problema en dicho contexto. Para la obtención de los datos realizamos entrevistas a 63 estudiantes de entre 18 y 23 años con matrícula en una universidad privada ubicada en Quito. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que se percibe menor presencia del acoso sexual en el contexto universitario que en el resto de los espacios públicos. El estudiantado muestra una actitud crítica con respecto a la normalización de este problema en el país y a la falta de información sobre la sexualidad, el acoso y la violencia sexual. Sin embargo, establecen una actitud pasiva frente a ello, en concordancia con la actitud social que observan. Los resultados también sugieren que el acoso sexual afecta significativamente más a las mujeres y a personas LGTBI.

Las universidades han emergido como actores para emprendimiento, funcionando principalmente como incubadoras de ideas de negocio, centrándose en la transformación hacia el desarrollo e innovación a través de empresas Spin-Off. El objetivo fue analizar la capacidad de las instituciones universitarias para generar empresas Spin-Off que contribuyan a la economía y sociedad con innovaciones y soluciones, generando recursos financieros propios en beneficio de ellas. Se adoptó una metodología de investigación mixta, realizando un análisis documental en bases indexadas, que sustentaron las variables y aplicación de encuestas a docentes universitarios, para identificar relaciones entre capacidades y recursos de las universidades y el éxito en generación de empresas Spin-Off. Los resultados destacan la importancia de la infraestructura, los recursos y sobre todo las políticas institucionales como factores cruciales en la creación y sostenibilidad. Se observó una correlación positiva entre disponibilidad de recursos en la universidad y efectividad en la generación de estas empresas. Además, se identificaron factores como infraestructura adecuada, políticas de apoyo a la innovación, y programas de incubación como influencias positivas en el éxito. Se concluye que las capacidades y recursos de las universidades juegan un papel crucial en el proceso de transformación de incubadoras a generadoras directas de empresas Spin-Off.

The article we present arises from research that studies the changes that occurred at the University, from the point of view of the students, regarding the teaching methodologies used by the professors. The year 2020 is the starting point of a new way of relating, because as a consequence of the confinement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, social and work activity changed, and although it was temporary, it had its consequences that may have remained. Thus, in the different social environments, face-to-face activities began to be carried out remotely. At the University of Extremadura, this research team, as teachers, asked themselves what was happening in teaching, and above all, which of these changes remained with us. To do this, the opinions of the students of the University of Extremadura on the changes in teaching methodologies during confinement due to COVID-19 have been analyzed. The research method that has been used is the qualitative study of the answers given by the students to the open questions of the questionnaire validated by this research team. The results obtained indicate that the changes made in teaching methodologies during the COVID-19 pandemic are NOT perceived positively by students in their teaching/learning process. Consequently, it can be concluded that there is no manifestly clear unanimity among students regarding the positive and negative aspects obtained from this experience on the changes in teaching methodologies caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The article addresses the issue of university autonomy in light of Lukács' (2012; 2013) conception of relative autonomy. It is based on the idea of the university as a social institution, whose origin is situated in a historical context following the formation of social being, and in which constant interaction with the society in which it exists is established, and therefore, with broader social forces. A comprehensive bibliography addressing the issue of Brazilian universities and university autonomy was analyzed, and the concept of relative autonomy categorized in the first two volumes of Lukács' grand ontology was examined. The discussion unfolds by first identifying that university autonomy is influenced by external factors; secondly, by recognizing the impossibility of a university existing in isolation within a separate reality, unable to interact with society, as it is not independent of the social, political, and economic pressures imposed upon it, thus enjoying only relative autonomy; and thirdly, by understanding that the issue of university autonomy also pertains to social forces that go beyond the regulatory frameworks defined by state sovereignty, making absolute university autonomy impossible from the perspective of the inextricable relationship between the whole and its parts. This article examines in particular two writings of Wendy Brown about the vocation of the public university: The Vocation of the Public University (2017) and Nihilistic Times: Thinking with Max Weber (2023). They will be analyzed in relation to neoliberalism diagnoses developed by the author since the publication of Undoing the Demos: Neoliberalism's Stealth Revolution (2015). It will be shown how Brown's critique of contemporary antidemocratic and nihilistic culture captures the existing tensions in higher education: while contemporary public universities are oriented by the dominant neoliberal rationality, it is also possible to think about ways to counter such hegemony. This possibility relies mostly on ascribing a vocation to public university that builds up the conditions for democracy, threatened by neoliberalism, which implies rethinking the notion of freedom, as well as reconfiguring the spheres of politics and science. This work determined the ecological footprint of the National Center for Applied Electromagnetism, a science institution attached at the Universidad de Oriente, Santiago de Cuba. The categories analyzed to carry out the calculations of CO2 emissions and the ecological footprint were: Water, Built surface, Electricity Consumption, Mobility, Paper, Non-hazardous solid waste, Hazardous waste, Food, Services and Production of Magnetic Conditioners. The methodology of Doménech (2009) and the methodology for calculating the ecological footprint in universities of López Álvarez et al. (2009) of the Sustainable Development Office, University of Santiago de Compostela were used as a basis. The results obtained for the year 2022 reflect that the National Center for Applied Electromagnetism needs an area of 52,984 ha/year of forest to regenerate the natural resources that the center uses for the satisfaction of it social demand. Universities are a formative scenario that transforms reality and their actions must go beyond commitment and citizen solidarity. The objective of this review article is to present a study on the conceptualization, definition and education in values, and an analysis of the theoretical-methodological referents of University Social Responsibility. Systematic literature review and bibliometric analyses were carried out in the programs VOSviewer version 1.6.19 and Connected Papers. The results show that strengthening the sense of identity and belonging of the competent professional committed to academic, economic, social and environmental actions, with respect to the place where he/she studies, lives and works, is fundamental to achieve transformations in order to improve the quality of citizenship education. Artificial intelligence can assist universities in identifying potential strategies based on information and trends, contribute to enrollment processes, and help reduce student dropout rates. It aids in identifying risk factors affecting students, allowing for the provision of specialized support measures. Additionally, contributes to the formulation of personalized and differentiated academic plans, enhances learning and teaching management, among other benefits. However, it is important to consider that a high percentage of students in Latin America come from low-income households and have limited access to technology. This limitation may impact their ability to leverage the advantages of artificial intelligence. Therefore, understanding its structure, factors, and effects is essential given its impact and trends in applied usage. A comprehensive implementation of intelligent automation in education is needed, considering these inequalities and challenges. this article analyzes communication regarding mental health in four public universities from four different countries, comparing the stigma towards mental health problems and its impact on the willingness to use university health services. Findings show that while stigma of mental health services is generally low, there are differences by country. Attitudes toward mental health services and reasons for rejecting services vary by country. Previous use of mental health services predicts less stigma and more willingness to use services. results suggests that understanding stigma can help guide internal communication around mental health in universities to improve well-being and use of services. Knowledge transfer, as a "third mission" and an activity connected to research, is essential for the university social function. This paper analyses the transfer activities carried out by Spanish and international research projects with a focus on disinformation in the Iberian Peninsula. We located 46 projects with these requirements, contacted those responsible and obtained the response of 25 through an online questionnaire that includes characteristics, timing, typology, contributors and audience of the activities completed, in progress or programmed (46 in total) as well as the perception of researchers on the transfer. The results show that the vast majority of disinformation projects (84%) carry out transfer activities, although many are limited to one or two, not always formalised via OTRI or similar. The projects themselves act as leaders or promoters in almost three out of four activities, although it is common to have at least one partner (58.6%). Their typology and target groups vary according to the objectives and area of the projects. It is noteworthy training for different groups, together with training, support and guidance resources, often multimedia and online. To a lesser extent, there are technological development activities, materialised in open digital applications and tools. The crossing of these two variables (typology and recipients) shows that social transfer is the largest group (43.48%), followed by professional (23.91%), technological (17.39%) and academic (15.22%). Despite being isolated and incipient practices, there is agreement among researchers in perceiving them as an essential part of their mission. Their vision in many cases is close to the "quadruple helix" model, which is oriented towards social innovation and responding to citizen demands on misinformation through collaborative approaches between university, government, companies and society. Sexual harassment is a daily phenomenon that is currently attracting considerable attention in Ecuador both because of denunciations by the feminist movement and because of its greater visibility in the media. The objective of this article is to identify the subjective perception of Ecuadorian university students about sexual harassment in higher education institutions. Specifically, we are interested in understanding the cultural particularities that may limit the effectiveness of strategies aimed at preventing the problem in this context. To obtain data, we conducted interviews with 63 students between 18 and 23 years of age enrolled in a private university located in Quito. The results obtained show that sexual harassment is perceived to be less present in the university context than in other public spaces. The student body shows a critical attitude regarding the normalization of this problem in the country and the lack of information on sexuality, harassment, and sexual violence. However, they adopt a passive attitude towards it in accordance with the social attitude they observe. In addition, the results indicate that sexual harassment affects women and LGTBI people significantly more. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
