KINGDOM of God , *TELEVISION talk programs , *DISCOURSE - Abstract
The purpose of this article is to understand characteristics of the political discourse of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) regarding the left-wing aired on the Univervideo streaming platform, focusing its investigations on one of its talk shows, entitled Entre Linhas, opened in 2020. It presents how ideological aspects of these discourses are articulated and their possible connections with theological elements that would influence the narratives of the UCKG. The analysis is intended to contribute to the understanding of the UCKG's behavior in the political choices it makes on the national scene, and the time frame extends from the 2020 municipal elections to the 2022 presidential elections. CRITICAL discourse analysis , *KINGDOM of God , *COLLECTIVE representation , *TELEVISION soap operas , *DRUG traffic , *CHILD abduction - Abstract
The controversial establishment of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Portugal was the subject of many news reports during the 1990s, in which accusations of serious crimes -- from charlatanism to connections to drug trafficking and child abduction -- filled the pages of newspapers (G. M. Dias, 2006; R. A. S. Dias, 2016; Farias, 1999; Farias & Santos, 1999; Júnior, 2013; Machado, 2003). Many of these news reports linked the Church with stereotypes about Brazil and Brazilians and referenced Brazilian soap operas, which were quite popular in the country at the time. To observe whether these characteristics have been maintained over the years, the author analysed reports published by the influential newspapers Público and Expresso from the early 21st century (2001 and 2002), in 2010 and 2017, respectively. Inspired by critical discourse analysis and framing analysis, and with the theoretical support of the theory of social representations, such analyses allowed the author to conclude that the characteristics identified in the 1990s remained, although the Church's media presence has since reduced. In turn, the reference to soap operas manifests in the fabric of journalistic discourse, with a hybridisation formed between the melodramatic and informational genres. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

KINGDOM of God , *FINANCIAL crises , *AUSTERITY , *THEOLOGY , *PENTECOSTALISM - Abstract
This article aims to analyze the discourse of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) in Portugal regarding the Portuguese economic and financial crisis (2010-2014) and the implementation of the austerity program, bearing in mind the association between neopentecostalism and neoliberalism. The study is anchored on a qualitative methodology based on a documentary analysis of the official newspaper of the UCKG, Folha de Portugal. Editions between 2010 and 2012 are analyzed, a period corresponding to the main reforms introduced by the austerity policy. This theoretical-methodological option appears to be an essential instrument for understanding the relationship between neoliberal policies and the narratives of prosperity theology.

POLITICAL parties , *PARTICIPATORY democracy , *KINGDOM of God , *CAMPAIGN funds , *ELECTIONS , *PRACTICAL politics - Abstract
In this article - in dialogue with the text by Christina Vital da Cunha - I reflect upon the relationship between participatory and representative democracy and how the insertion in political parties involves important elements that contribute to the discussion on identity and their contributions to think about formal politics. I emphasize that considering the presence of evangelicals in party life, together with the existing party-political strategies and guidelines, as well as the electoral funding processes and the structuring of campaigns are important aspects for the proposed analysis. As a conclusion I indicate that it seems to me that the differences identified are not only generational, but there are also class components and issues related to insertion in the territory, involvements with various movements, militancy, and the different types of insertion in party structures. This article addresses the latest incidents involving the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (hereinafter IURD or simply Universal Church) in Angola. More specifically, it analyzes the arrival of the aforementioned religious association in Angola, its growth, the outbreak of the crisis, the reasons evoked by dissident pastors and bishops, namely, the subordination of Angolan pastors to the detriment of Brazilian pastors, involuntary vasectomy, washing money, currency evasion, etc., and their legal and social implications for the IURD in Angola. To this end, we use approaches already made about the IURD, revisiting academic articles, books, newspapers and material broadcast in an investigative TV program, leading us to conclude that if the crimes imputed to the IURD are proven, it will have its license revoked by the Government of the Republic of Angola. - Abstract
A relação que a IURD estabelece com a dinâmica política em Campos dos Goytacazes, através das ações assistencialistas, possibilitou a consolidação de sua representação político-religiosa e de uma base eleitoral constituída dentro de suas unidades, a qual pode mediar apoios e alianças políticas., This article builds on the case-study of the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes –RJ, in order to understand and explain some of the political-humanitarian configurations established by the Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (IURD) in the municipal elections of 2012. In particular, the relation between religion and local political dynamics is analyzed through the run for office of Dayvison Miranda who was supported by the IURD and elected at that time. The research was based on direct observation of the IURD meetings, of the meetings of the group ‘Força Jovem’ and the rallies by the city councilor Dayvison Miranda. In these contexts, semi-structured interviews were carried out with the candidate Dayvison Miranda and the then councilor Vieira Reis, also supported by the IURD. The relationship that the IURD establishes with the political dynamics in Campos dos Goytacazes, through welfare actions, enabled the consolidation of its political-religious representation and an electoral base constituted within its units, which can mediate support and political alliances.

The controversial establishment of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Portugal was the subject of many news reports during the 1990s, in which accusations of serious crimes — from charlatanism to connections to drug trafficking and child abduction — filled the pages of newspapers (G. In Brazil, in less than three decades, the Pentecostals have become one of the main actors of national politics. Like in several other countries of Latin America, this has largely contributed to the reorganization of the religious field which was done in favor of Pentecostals. How is it possible to explain the increasing number of their congregants ? The reasons for their electoral triumphs ? Could they become a threat for democracy, as it has been often mentionned ? So many questions that this paper will try to answer.

The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God was established in Angola since 1992, but its presence in the country has become uncertain from an unusual episode: in December 2012, in a vigil to the end of the year, 6 people were killed and 120 were injured. This scenario triggered a set of facts and political speeches regarding this religious institution, which questioned the influence of the UCKG in that country. This communication proposal takes this historical fact as an analytical motto to understand the performance of the Brazilian Pentecostal churches in Africa, in particular the Universal Kingdom of God Church in Angola. We aim to question whether that presence should be understood an an instrument that promotes Brazilian imperialism in that country, interfering with the traditional habits of the Angolan culture or, whether, from another perspective, this religious presence should be seen as an agent of integration between Brazil and Angola. In order to conduct the analysis, we start from the reports about the episode in question and go forward with the theoretical and methodological aid of sociology, anthropology and international relations.

This paper is an original exercise of exploring some of the social actions of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) in Namibia, South Africa, Angola, Mozambique and Portugal. Taking into consideration the contingences of each region, the UCKG tries to make and link new faithful through the social action organized mainly by organizations such as Sisterhood and Woman in Action, and by the Associação Beneficente Cristã, which has been already closed in Brazil. On the one hand, the church establishes partnerships with governmental institutions in order to promote itself as a social welfare organization. On the other hand, the sisterhoods offer promises of emotional success and social reconstruction. These programs encourage women to be committed to the church routine and to discipline themselves. The resulting achievement is a vehicle of empowerment and transformation. The ethnographic material is composed of articles and stories collected from newspapers, journals, magazines, websites and blogs created by the church and that register social actions of the UCKG during 2009 and 2010.

This study is an ethnographic and conceptual analysis of religious objects, their uses, and mediation of authority within the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (Universal Church) in Brazil. Drawing on scholarship within media studies, religion and media, and material religion, I distinguish between artifacts used to cement implicit contracts between Universal Church followers and their church community, which I call contractual media, or swag, and those that followers bring to meetings to be blessed and then take home to mediate both good and evil forces in family, work, and social life—these I call portable media. While portable object media are seen by their owners as powerful tools, contractual media, on the other hand, create implicit power relations that keep followers tied to the institutional church in a reciprocal exchange predicated upon expected prosperity as evidence of faithful attendance, fidelity, and personal sacrifice. The physical exchange of material goods in religious spaces constitutes a perpetuation rather than a disruption of institutional religious authority. As infrastructure, contractual object media establish and maintain conditions for otherwise mundane materials to mediate power on a daily basis. Through attention toward portable and contract object media, as part of what I am calling material microstructure, we can further complicate religious authority as it is mediated through objects, not just in one-way flows but as dynamic exchanges and trade-offs between personal empowerment and institutional control. - Abstract
The present work focuses on the processes of production and the displacement of meaning of faith in the discourse of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. To that end, we are anchored in the Discourse Analysis of the French line, more specifically that affiliated with the theoretical domains inaugurated by Michel Pêcheux (2014 [1969]; 1995 [1975]) in France and developed by him and other researchers also in Brazil. From the notion of imaginary formations (PÊCHEUX, 2014 [1969]), we investigate how the notion of intelligent faith, coined by the authorities of the aforementioned church, is inserted discursively in the religious semantic field. From the notation of the workings of ideology (PÊCHEUX, 1995 [1975]) we return to religious discourse as defined and redefined by Orlandi (1987, 2007) to perceive, in the game of images produced as an effect of meaning, some particularities discursive in the Universal Church. As a result of this research, we perceive the functioning of binary counterpositions by which faith is semanticized and which, in turn, have implications for the production of specific meanings that distinguish the faith practiced by the IURD from faith practiced in other religious domains. - Abstract
This article proposes a discussion at the intersection of the areas of Anthropology of Religion and Secularism, choosing as object the cycle of productions related to the Old Testament initiated in 2010 and transmitted by Rede Record de Televisão, property of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. These are products of the cultural industry that have been imbued from the outset with tensions and discussions about the logic behind the demarcation of boundaries between the domain of religion and entertainment (Meyer and Moors, 2006). In this convergence identified between the biblical narratives and their current consumption and mediated by the production of the cultural industry, the scopes of circulation and the production of these messages are highlighted. I also emphasize the specificity of this production of Old Testament themes in comparison with earlier placements of what I identify as the "first cycle of religious dramatization," which came out in the late 1990s. The research highlights the movement that some agents identify as a "Judaicizing Turn" by the Universal Church in convergence with the production of miniseries and novels anchored in the text of the Old Testament. The size, power, and representation of the Pentecostal movement are rapidly increasing around the world, particularly in the Global South. This is especially the case in Brazil, where conversions from Catholicism and other religions to Pentecostalism have huge implications for religious tolerance and even race relations. Vulnerable minority Afro-Brazilian religions are increasingly targeted by evangelical Christians, particularly by Pentecostals and neo-Pentecostals, creating a tense situation between the two groups. Militant groups of Pentecostals have carried out violence against Afro-Brazilian temples and practitioners on the ground, as well as hate speech on the internet and other spaces in the public sphere. Brazilians and others commenting on the situation assert that Pentecostals target these religions for reasons of competition, and though I do not contest this, I expand on this discussion by examining moral disagreements between the two groups as well as the role of race and racism. In order to investigate some Pentecostal methods for the spread of hate speech and violence, I traveled to Rio de Janeiro. I chose the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, a huge and controversial neo-Pentecostal church network, as a case study. The UCKG is one of the biggest perpetrators of intolerance against the Afro-Brazilian minority religions. I attended numerous UCKG church services in various neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro as an observer and a participant. My findings were that the Church promotes a language of war and gives a moral justification for worshippers’ battles with nonbelievers, and that it has elements of militancy in its proselytism. It also poses itself as the victim, asserting that it is discriminated against (for spreading hate) and demanding that its intolerance be tolerated. In order to further investigate the motivations behind these behaviors and attitudes, I have utilized media coverage, social media, and academic sources. I have found that the UCKG is highly competitive for territory and that it additionally denounces Afro-Brazilian religions for moral reasons. But furthermore, even though Pentecostals and especially the UCKG are racially diverse, I assert that their attacks on Afro-Brazilian religions have racist undertones. Examples from Africa where the UCKG demonizes African traditions and employs racialized depictions of African peoples shed light on this conversation. Overall, this thesis is a conversation about the increasing use of the public sphere on the part of evangelicals, and especially militant groups of Pentecostals and neo-Pentecostals, to spread hate against Afro-Brazilian minority religions. These behaviors reflect larger trends of increasing religious fervor in the public sphere around the globe, which undermines tolerance and secularity, and in this situation, racial equality. The breadth and popularity of this movement in Brazil and globally necessarily makes an understanding of these issues crucial to efforts to promote religious and even racial tolerance and equality in Brazil and elsewhere.

Based on the book "The mysteries of the faith", written by the main leader of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, Edir Macedo, I reflect about the notion of faith and about the characteristics of the author's discourse. I consider that, by focusing Macedo's text, it's possible to talk about discursive strategies reproduced in the denomination routine and also characterize the proselytists activities that take place from them. By analyzing Macedo's translation of the notion of faith in this publication, I point out the use of the ideas of "natural faith" and "supernatural faith", reinforcing the continuities and discontinuities between secularized world and religious universe in the author's propose.

This article presentes na analysis of the electoral political performance carried out by the newspaper “Folha Universal”, belonging to the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (IURD), during the First and Second Round of the Elections of 2018. Our focus of analysis was the editorials and the political/electoral reports printed in the “iurdianos” weekly. The survey reveals that support for Jair Bolsonaro only became blunt at the end of the First Round, When researchs indicated that he had a high chance of being elected. This support was not given with an exhibition of the candidate's name or requests for explicit votes, but because of the guidelines and symbolic elements of the published articles, in which Bolsonaro's campaign jargon was repeated, such as the need to end the “oldpolitics”, defend “traditional family values”and the need to move away from“communism”. Such conceptions, in the electoral context, demonstrated affinities with the candidacy of Jair Bolsonaro and his presence, appearing in a privileged way on Rede Record of television, also of the Universal Church, ratified the condition of being supported by the religious institution.

It's possible to realize the expansion of evangelical religiosity by the census numbers as well by its huge capacity of mobilization and transformation on the lifeword. The participation of self-denominated evangelicals in the national politics is remarkable. The Evangelical Parliamentary Front became one of the main forces in Brazil's Parliament and democratic governabilty depends on their support. This presence assured them a privileged place on main public debates as gay marriage, criminalization of homophobia, abortion and drug's decriminalization. The conflicts with LGBT community and feminist movement increased and a consensus seems far away. Furthermore, many researches are indicating the importance of evangelical religiosity in the process of social ascension in Brazil and its role in the development of an "entrepreneurship mentality" in the poor suburbs of big cities. The main goal of this study is to understand this scenario by analysing the reflexivity of these actors, specially from Universal Church, taken here as our case study. The study of this "evangelical reflexivity" comprehends the judgement and evaluation of the actors about three chosen topics (politics, entrepreneurship and gender), as well as the elaboration of existential projects and the internal conversations they made to think the viability of their plan of actions in relation to the objective conditions in which they find themselves. Through the analysis of these internal conversation, we will try to understand how these actors build their perception about the self and the world and the importance they attribute to the religiosity in this process. The main hypothesis of this work is that the exposition and the necessity of participation in several "worlds of action" constitutes an increasing exigence of reflexivity by evangelicals, requiring the incorporation of new knowledges and competences which are not a priori available in the religious world. So, the split with the traditional religious contextual continuity promotes transformations on the way these actors face religiosity. Concomitantly, the adhesion to the religiosity also produces a split in the individuals life contexts, promoting a new reflexive cycle and producing changes on the lifeworld Doutorado Antropologia Social Doutor em Antropologia Social FAPESP 2013/02643-6 BEPE

How does the Republicans’ party organization reflect the relationship of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) to the party? The UCKG was the first Pentecostal church to launch its own official candidates, initially in different parties, until the emergence of the Republican party who, since its creation, has been polled as the church party. In this research, I present evidence that formalizes the relationship between institutions based on two hypotheses: 1) the dominant coalition of Republicans is composed of top church tier; and 2) the structure composed of provisional commissions (PCs) reinforces the concentration of power in the dominant coalition. The analysis is divided into two parts: in the first, I describe the political activities of the UCKG, while in the second I present the party organization of the Republicans. As the main results, I highlight how the party organization guarantees the church's control over the Republicans, using the following mechanisms: with the widespread use of provisional commissions instead of directories, the church avoids the formation of local leaders “from outside”, while the top party tier, predominantly composed of individuals linked to the UCKG, guarantees church member power in party decision-making.

This paper analyzes the protagonism by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in the sense of producing reconfigurations in the current Brazilian religious public space. This occurs in different dimensions but this text is atem especially in iurdiana production monumentalization the religious, through the building of so-called cathedrals of faith, deployed in strategic places of the cities. In doing so the Universal defies Catholic hegemony to establish itself as legitimate religion in the public sphere, while their mega constructions tend to provoke a mimetic effect on other religious backgrounds who compete with her in public space. As a result, we have the diversification and expansion of religion in public space, which is a perspective for understanding the Brazilian secularization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the participation of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) in the media in Portugal and how this Brazilian denomination is related to Portuguese society and religious specificities. For the analysis, five editions of Sixth Sense (TV UCKG in Portugal) were selected, in which there are references to Friday the 13th, a date full of mysticism in popular Catholicism. Based on the narrative theory of Paul Ricoeur, a content analysis of the programs in which it uncovered the cosmology of the Neo-Pentecostal church: a "world" where opposing forces, representing good and evil, fighting between yes to master / save people; magic and spiritualist religions are evil ruler agents, while the UCKG is the agent of good, salvation. This article focuses on the Neo-Pentecostal Movement, particularly in Brazil but also in other Global South contexts, which is a principal advocate the prosperity theology message. However, this same movement, as explained herein, actually promotes and sustains other characteristics in addition to the prosperity message, which pose significant challenges to evangelical missions. Include two aspects: an unredeemed, animistic worldview and an inadequate evangelical soteriology. Gaining the understanding of such complexities will hopefully lead to a more compassionate posture and better evangelistic strategies to serve Neo- Pentecostal adherents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This study was intended to analyse the characteristic syncretism of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God by addressing their specificities and some consequences to the Brazilian religious filed. This work emphasizes the relationship of this denomination syncretism with religions of African origin. The main hypothesis is that the Neo- Pentecostalism of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, due to its syncretic profile, presents itself as an attractive option between the classical Protestantism and Afro-Brazilian services and the popular Brazilian religiosity. This work is based other researchers' work on the topic, literature produced by some leaders of this movement and videographic material available on internet containing Neo-Pentecostal speeches and practices relevant to this study. From this effort, it was considered that this kind of Neo- Pentecostalism is at a middle way between the Protestant tradition and the African and popular Brazilian religiosity, with notable ruptures in relation to its origin as well as many continuities; which makes this movement the expression of Protestantism that most suited the Brazilian reality. In this work, some elements of the occupation of urban space by Pentecostal religious temples are presented, taking the Temple of Solomon as the object of this analysis. With the inauguration of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God’s Cathedral of Faith, in 1999, a scenario opens for dispute of visibility in Brazilian metropolises between Pentecostal churches and between those and the Catholic Charismatic Renewal by means of the construction of great religious temples. In this way, the construction of new religious monuments emerges as a producer of new materialities, aesthetics and practices that spread in the Brazilian Pentecostal religious field. Therefore, I highlight how such monuments have produced a new type of relationship between audiences and religious leaders, as the public ceases to be faithful and the leaders have public recognition, that is, they are known outside the church. In this sense, I aim to point to the type of visibility that the monuments took in the Brazilian public sphere and to the way their audiences and their leaders are constituted.

- Abstract
This article seeks to analyze the reactions and responses of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) in Berlin to the global COVID-19 crisis. Although the UCKG has been the subject of multiple international types of research regarding the spread of the COVID-19 virus, this article shows that the UCKG's global network of local churches must be differentiated in their responses and reactions to the global pandemic. This article traces and analyzes how the local UCKG in Berlin responded to the pandemic in its respective conditions and differed from the global network in the emergence of a pandemic in its rhetoric and discourse, using the concept of the Third Space . For this purpose, the services and sermons of local pastors were recorded to analyze how the discourse toward the COVID-19 crisis changed during the period of occurrence and awareness of a global pandemic. The results show how the church has adapted to the local restriction and regulations and reflect the international literature on how the UCKG's mother church in Brazil acted in comparison. The church and its pastors in Germany responded to the global pandemic in three primary ways: they assigned to authorities' guidelines, provided sermons with undertones of spiritual warfare, and rejected the interpretation of interdependencies between demons and health issues., (© The Author(s) 2022.)
