Exercise and anabolic steroids are anticipated to promote fat mass reduction and so decrease the number of comorbidities related to excessive weight. Objective. The aim of this study was to verify the influence of aerobic exercise and the use of steroids on the accumulation of adipose tissue and on the biochemical limitations of Wistar rats nourished by a hypercaloric diet. Methods. Forty, young male Wistar rats were split into four groups: obese control (n=10), obese under treatment (n=10), obese under aerobic exercise (n=10) and obese under aerobic exercise and treatment (n=10). All animals were fed with a hypercaloric diet and animals under treatment received intramuscular testosterone. Body (weight and visceral fat) and blood (lipidogram, glucose, and liver enzymes) parameters were assessed. Results. The group treated with aerobic exercise and testosterone revealed a reduction in body weight and visceral, perirenal, retroperitoneal and epididymal fats, accompanied by the blood levels of glucose, lactate, LDLcholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and lactate dehydrogenase; following high-intensity physical activity. Conclusion. The results support the theory that the combination of steroids and physical activity reduce side-effects of androgenic-anabolic hormones and convey benefits to some constraints. Water-diversion projects can favor massive introductions and accelerate biotic homogenization. This study provides empirical evidence on the consequences of a proposed law intended to divert water from two large and historically isolated river basins in Brazil: Tocantins to Sao Francisco. Compositional similarity (CS) and beta-diversity were quantified encompassing aquatic organisms: mollusks, zooplankton, crustaceans, insects, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and plants. For CS we (i) considered only native species, and (ii) simulated the introduction of non-natives and assumed the extinction of threatened species due to this water-diversion project. We highlight the environmental risks of such large-scale projects, which are expected to cause impacts on biodiversity linked to bioinvasion and homogenization, and we recommend alternatives in order to solve water-demand conflicts. Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) has a thick and sparse absorbent root system; therefore, it is dependent on its association with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) for P acquisition from the soil. Thus, inoculation of cassava with AMF can improve the development of this root crop. This study evaluated the effects of soil disinfection (disinfected vs. natural) and the spore rates of Rhizophagus clarus inoculation (0, 50, 100 and 200 spores per plant) in greenhouse conditions on the initial growth, yield, P acquisition, and P use efficiency of cassava, as well as to evaluate the contribution of the native AMF to P acquisition from the soil. For cassava production in P-deficient soil, inoculation with Rhizophagus clarus significantly increased cassava growth, P uptake, and storage root yield only when the soil was disinfected. When the soil is not disinfected, native AMF contributes up to 86 % of the P taken up by cassava. However, high spore rates of Rhizophagus clarus in natural soil cause detrimental consequences for native AMF by reducing the colonization of the absorbent roots. Therefore, for cassava grown in natural soil under greenhouse conditions, a rate of 50 spores per plant of Rhizophagus clarus is sufficient to promote a 14.5 % increase in the yield of fresh storage roots. A management strategy that favors the native AMF multiplication in the soil is a potential strategy to improve P uptake and yield of cassava in P-deficient soils. Methods: Triatomines were collected from households and by dissecting palm trees in the peri-urban areas of Cruzeiro do Sul (Acre); they were identified using a specific key and via genital analyses. Trypanosomatid infection was determined through microscopy and polymerase chain reaction. Results: In total, 116 triatomines of the species Eratyrus mucronatus, Rhodnius pictipes, R. stali, and R. montenegrensis were collected, of which 13.8% were positive for T. cruzi. Conclusions: Four species of triatomines presented an infection rate above 13% in the Boca do Moa community. The objective of this study was to describe the occurrence of triatomines in homes in Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, Brazil. Methods: The specimens were collected by an active search inside homes and also by a passive search by the residents. Results: A total of 55 triatomines were captured comprising of 5 species each of the genera Rhodnius, Eratyrus, and Panstrongylus. No colonies were detected, ruling out the possibility of domiciliation. Conclusions: Information on regional epidemiological dynamics contributes to the prevention and control of disease. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-10-01 This study aimed to evaluate a correlation between environmental temperature-humidity index (THI), rectal temperature (RT) and plasmatic concentration of cortisol in pregnancy rates of recipient cows in the Amazon biome. Recipient cows (n = 235) were submitted to an estrus synchronization simplified P36 protocol for a Fixed-Time Embryo Transference (FTEF). Rectal temperature of recipient cows and ambient temperature, relative humidity (RH) and dry-bulb temperature ( degrees C) were recorded on day zero (DO), eight (D8) and 16 (D16) of the protocol. On D16, each recipient received an embryo after the confirmation of a corpus luteum. At this moment, a blood sample was collected and cortisol concentration was evaluated in the sample with radioimmunoassay. On D41 (D33 embryo), pregnancy diagnosis was assessed (PD). The yield rates of recipient cows and pregnancy after the protocol were 66.81% (151/226) and 35.76% (54/151), respectively. Cows that became pregnant presented lower means in RT, plasmatic cortisol and THI parameters (P < 0.05) in comparison to nonpregnant group. The significant economic potential of Swietenia macrophylla has caused immense reductions in the native populations, jeopardizing their survival. Restoring these populations requires the establishment of quality seedling production, which depends on adequate evaluation of the physiological state of seeds. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature and light on seed germination and seedling growth of S. macrophylla. The experimental design was completely randomized, with ten treatments of four replicates of 50 seeds. Treatments consisted of: constant temperatures of 23, 29, 35 and 41 °C, with photoperiods of 24 and 12 h of light, and alternating temperatures of 25-35 °C and 30-40 °C, with 12 h of light. Water content, germination, germination speed index, stem diameter, root length, shoot length, root dry mass and shoot dry mass of seedlings were evaluated. At 41 oC, S. macrophylla seeds failed to germinate. A constant temperature of 29 oC under 24 h of light favors the germination process of seeds and initial seedling growth. RESUMO O significativo potencial econômico de Swietenia macrophylla tem causado redução intensa nas populações nativas, colocando em risco sua sobrevivência, exigindo assim, medidas para promover adequada avaliação do estado fisiológico das sementes, visando estabelecimento de um programa de qualidade de produção de mudas. Assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o efeito da temperatura e da luz sobre a germinação de sementes e o crescimento de plântulas de Swietenia macrophylla. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, com dez tratamentos de quatro réplicas com 50 sementes, e constou de: temperaturas constantes de 23, 29, 35 e 41 °C, com fotoperíodo de 24 e 12 h de luz, e alternadas de 25-35 oC e 30-40 oC, com 12 h de luz. Avaliou-se o teor de água, germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, diâmetro do coleto, comprimento de raiz e parte aérea, massa seca de raiz e parte aérea de plântulas. Germinação na temperatura de 41 oC é letal para sementes de S. macrophylla. O teste de germinação com temperatura constante de 29 oC sob 24 h de luz favorece o processo germinativo das sementes e o crescimento inicial das plântulas.

Results: Two adult female R. montenegrensis specimens were identified. Conclusions: The present study confirms that the number of triatomine species within the Amazon has increased from 10 to 11, and the number of Brazilian states with R. montenegrensis has increased from two to three. The aim of this study was to investigate the triatomine fauna and trypanosomiasis infections in Acre State, Western Brazilian Amazon. Insect collection was performed by dissecting palm trees and installing traps. We found that T cruzi infection rate was 24.5% and Rhodnius pictipes (57.1%) was the most abundant triatomine species. Health education as well as epidemiological and entomological surveillance are necessary to diagnose and prevent new cases of Chagas disease in the region. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-01-01 Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado do Acre (FAPAC) The envenomation caused by freshwater stingrays is one of the most frequent injuries related to aquatic animals in South America. Such injury is severe with skin necrosis as a probable result of the sting and subsequent intense pain. Here, we characterized the accidents caused by freshwater stingrays in Jurua Valley, Acre, Brazil, with reports of people who had suffered injuries. Data collection was performed in nearby communities in the Jurua River and its tributaries through a semi-structured questionnaire. Bathers and fishermen were the main group affected, and injuries were mainly in the lower limbs. The results were similar to those previously reported for other regions of Brazil, except for the treatment applied. Severe pain, edema, erythema, necrosis, and ulceration of the wound are some of the symptoms reported by the injured population. Most of the treatment is based on folk remedies, such as human urine, hot boiled egg, medicinal plants, and nonprescription drugs. In most cases, injuries usually occur in remote areas which favor the use of folk remedies, but the accidents are still neglected by the population itself because of the low lethality. Therefore, educational activities and prophylactic measures should be carried out with a standardization of first aid and late measures. In addition, the correct use of medicinal plants and folk remedies could be a strong ally to ensure a safe and affordable care for the population. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-01-01 This paper analyzes a cutout of the enunciative complexity from the narrative Memorias da Emilia (1939 [1969]). This analysis describes in which of this complexity's domains the speaker-narrator's shifts are represented in the analyzed material. To do that, we used, as theoretical-methodological reference, the studies on shown heterogeneity from Authier-Revuz (1998, 2004), and on the indiciary method from Ginzburg (1991). The results have presented an enunciative complexity constitutive of the speech organization, under the form of a complex overlap of enunciations in which the speaker, attributed to the role of narrator, simulates dialogical relations built as enunciated by different interlocutors in these relations. This complexity signals enunciation domains which highlight an array of ways to insert the other in the discourse (thread), which do not enunciate in transparent speech, given the dialogism which constitutes such domains. Therefore, these different forms suggest that narration happens in an overlap of enunciative domains. Otherwise, plant metabolism impaired by Cd toxicity can be aided by a proper sulfur (S) nutrition, since S is a component of antioxidants and photosynthetic systems. In this sense, our aim in this study was to evaluate the effect of S supply (0.1, 1.9 and 3.7 mmol L-1) on the antioxidant and photosynthetic systems of Massai grass exposed to Cd (0.0, 0.1 and 0.5 mmol L-1) as a prerequisite for studies of Cd phytoextraction. Plants supplied with 3.7 mmol L-1 S showed the lowest growth and the highest Cd concentrations when exposed to 0.5 mmol L-1 Cd. However, Massai grass grown without S deprivation showed the highest GSH + GSSG concentrations in all tissues and the lowest lipid peroxidation in stems and sheaths and roots. In general, the activities of SOD, CAT, APX, GPOX and GR did not increase in Massai grass exposed to Cd, even with proper S supply. Severe Cd exposure halted the photosynthetic system of Massai grass, although well-nourished plants with S exhibited greatest photosynthetic rate probably due to the action of GSH in the control of the oxidative stress. Most pastures have low productivity, demanding intensification. Pasture intensification, as conventionally proposed, promises conservation by land sparing. However, it does not embrace silvopastoral systems, a type of intensification that enhances carbon balance and in situ biodiversity conservation. In the Cerrado, silvopastoral systems would be easily established because pastures with native trees are commonly found in the landscape. In this study, we estimated the density of scattered trees using RapidEye satellite data in 200 cultivated pastures (48,519 ha). We also identified tree species by establishing 93 field plots distributed along 15 ecoregions in the Cerrado biome. We expected that the density of trees would vary in function of farm size, age of the pasture, intensification of pasture management and biophysical variables. Mean scattered tree density was 3.52 tree ha-1 (? 2.93 SD), and it was higher in ecoregions with lower and more concentrated rainfall. The most frequent tree species were those with high commercial values, such as the Myracrodruon urundeuva timber tree (aroeira) and the Caryocar brasiliense fruit tree (pequi). The average above-ground carbon stock of native Cerrado trees in pastures was estimated in 1.2 Mg ha-1 (? 1.2 SD). Our study shows that there are productive pastures with high tree density and species richness, which could be used as models for sustainable intensification strategies in different ecoregions of the Cerrado. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-07-29 Triatominae are insects notorious as vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, which is the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, and other trypanosomatids. Triatomines of the genus Rhodnius are primarily sylvatic, nevertheless the occurrence of native species that invade households suggests their possible role in the transmission of Chagas disease. Rhodnius montenegrensis was first described in 2012, but the biological aspects of this species are still unknown. This study aimed to analyze the biological aspects of R. montenegrensis under laboratory conditions. The emergence rate was 63.0%, the mean time required for the emergence was 13.9 +/- 1.7 days, the biological cycle from egg to adult phase occurred in 105.2 +/- 9.2 days, the number of bloodmeals required for each nymphal stage to reach the next stage varies between a minimum of two and a maximum of seven. The weight gained after a bloodmeal varied between 10.6 times on 1st-instar nymphs and 3.9 times on 5th-instar nymphs. The adult specimens had the lowest gain of weight, reaching 2.2 times on females and 1.6 times on males. The sex ratio observed was 1:1. These data are relevant to understand the life cycle of this new described species and to elaborate more effective vector control strategies. Methods: Triatomines were collected through direct capture in a home environment. Positivity analysis for trypanosomatids was performed by PCR assays. Results: Collected insects consisted of 31 Rhodnius robustus, 4 Rhodnius montenegrensis, and 1 Panstrongylus geniculatus specimens. All were adults, with no presence of domiciliation, and with an infection rate of 30.6%. Conclusions: Future studies are recommended in other locations of Rio Branco in order to develop a georeference database of the occurrence of triatomines in urban areas. The objective of this work was to evaluate temporal changes in the soil chemical attributes after the vegetation has been slashed and burned in an area of native forest in the Western Amazon. For this study, four hectares of forest in Cruzeiro do Sul, State of Acre, Brazil, was slashed and burned. The soil in the study area was classified as Ultisol (Argissolo Amarelo Distreifico tipico). Soil samples were collected over the course of one year, the first one being collected 16 hours after the burn and the others at 30, 60, 90, 150, 210, 270, and 360 days after the burn. The soil surface layers were more sensitive to fire action. Ashes from vegetation burn increased pH values, basic cations, and C values only in the first months, resulting in higher basal saturation values (V%). The practice of slash-and-burn after 12 months resulted in lower values of pH, Ca, Mg, K, and P and higher values of Al and H, as well as saturation by aluminum in the soil, indicating this practice contributes to the reduction of soil fertility. One of the technical problems refers to the harmonic current levels caused by inverters employed in photovoltaic distributed generation (PV), increasing the possibility of resonance in systems with capacitors. In addition, inverters without isolation transformer can also inject a certain amount of DC current which, being present in power transformer secondary windings, favor the generation and propagation of additional harmonics in the primary side. Thus, this paper shows that DC currents injected by PV inverters create one more condition that may cause system-capacitor resonance. For this, laboratory analyses are presented showing the conditions under which different models of PV inverters inject a higher DC current level. As a result, it is verified that higher DC current level is injected in conditions different from those in which there is higher harmonic current injection, concluding that the inverter may affect the power quality for whatever the power injected by the PV system. The growing of Piper aduncum for essential oil extraction has increased, but there is a lack of basic information about its management and cultivation, which allows the productivity and quality of the oil, in order to attend the market demands. This study aimed to evaluate the relation between the production of essential oils from P. aduncum and soil water pressure heads (20 kPa, 40 kPa, 60 kPa, 100 kPa and non-irrigated). The assessment comprised the quantification of idioblasts and the production of essential oil extracted from leaves of cultivated plants. The variation in the soil water pressure head alters the amount of idioblasts in P. aduncum leaves, with impacts on the essential oil production. A soil water pressure head range of 20-60 kPa is sufficient for this species to express the highest amount of idioblasts and the highest level of essential oil production. The species adapts itself to different water availability conditions in the soil. Under stress conditions, due to water deficit or excess, the production of essential oil is reduced. Objetivou-se avaliar a relação entre a produção de óleos essenciais em P. aduncum e tensões de água no solo (20 kPa, 40 kPa, 60 kPa, 100 kPa e sem irrigação). Foram avaliados o número de idioblastos e a produção de óleo essencial em folhas de plantas cultivadas. A variação na tensão de água no solo altera a quantidade de idioblastos nas folhas de P. aduncum, com reflexo na produção de óleo essencial. A tensão de água no solo de 20-60 kPa é suficiente para a planta expressar o maior número de idioblastos e maior produção de óleo essencial. A espécie se adapta a diferentes condições de disponibilidade de água no solo. Em condições de estresse, devido ao déficit ou excesso de água, a produção de óleo essencial é reduzida.

Methods: An adult male R. neglectus specimen was collected from the Catuaba Experimental Reserve, which is located in the municipality of Senador Guiomard. Results: This increases the number of triatomine species reported from the State of Acre to eight and is also the first report of R. neglectus from the Brazilian Western Amazon Region. Conclusions: The occurrence of R. neglectus is alarming because even though the species is wild, it can invade and colonize human dwellings and peridomiciles, thereby increasing Chagas disease transmission. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2018-10-26 Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) Uncaria guianensis is native to the Amazon and is used traditionally as an anti-inflammatory. Natural populations of the species have declined markedly in recent times because of strong anthropic pressure brought about by deforestation and indiscriminate collection. The aim of the present study was to assess the genetic and chemical diversity among eight natural populations of U. guianensis located in the Brazilian states of Acre, Amapa and Amazonas. A set of four primer combinations was employed in sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) amplifications of leaf DNA, and the fragments were analyzed in an LI-COR model 4300 DNA Analyzer. Genetic variability within the populations (81%) was substantially greater than that detected between them (19%). The highest percentage of polymorphic loci (90.21%) and the largest genetic variability were observed in the population located in Mazagao, Amapa. Genetic differentiation between populations was high (F-st = 0.188) and the studied populations formed three distinct genetic groups (K = 3). The population located in Assis Brasil, Acre, presented the highest average content of the mitraphylline (0.60 mg/g dry weight,). However, mitraphylline and isomitraphylline not detected in most individuals in the studied populations, and it is questionable whether they should be considered as chemical markers of the species. The genetic data confirm the urgent need for conservation programs for U. guianensis, and for further studies aimed at ascertaining the genetic basis and heritability of alkaloid accumulation. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the genetic differentiation among populations of the genus Hemiodontichthys Bleeker, 1862, through combined genetic techniques and included the analysis of populations sampled in the Araguaia River, Guama River, Madeira River and two populations from the Purus River. Hemiodontichthys samples from the two localities in Purus River were also karyotyped in order to address the degree of chromosomal variation between populations. Through GMYC analysis of the COI tree, the patterns of genetic variation among local populations revealed to be higher than the ones found among distinct species from other genera of the subfamily Loricariinae, suggesting the existence of probable four cryptic species in this genus. The possible existence of a species complex in the genus is corroborated by the different cytogenetic patterns between Hemiodontichthys sp. 1 and sp. 2, revealing the necessity of a deep taxonomic review of the group. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2017-09-01 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) FAP/DF INCT in Nanobiotechnology In this study we report on successful production of two samples (BR15 and BR16) comprising magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (similar to 10 nm) surface-functionalized via hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilane agents, namely 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxisilane (APTS) and N-propyl-trimethoxisilane (NPTS). The as-produced samples were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetization measurements (5 K and 300 K hysteresis cycles and zero field-cooled/field-cooled measurements), and Mossbauer spectroscopy (77 and 297 K). The Mossbauer data supported the model picture of a core-shell magnetite-based system. This material system shows shell properties influenced by the surface-coating design, either APTS-coated (BR15) or APTS+NPTS-coated (sample BR16). Analyses of the Mossbauer spectra indicates that the APTS-coated sample presents Fe(III)-rich core and Fe(II)-rich shell with strong hyperfine field; whereas, the APTS+NPTS-coated sample leads to a mixture of two main nanostructures, one essentially surface-terminated with APTS whereas the other surface-terminated with NPTS, both presenting weak hyperfine fields compared with the single surface-coated sample. Magnetization measurements support the core-shell picture built from the analyses of the Mossbauer data. Our findings emphasize the capability of the Mossbauer spectroscopy in assessing subtle differences in surface-functionalized iron-based core-shell nanostructures. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-09-01 Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) We describe a new Amazonian species of Adenomera that corresponds to one of the acoustic signals and morphs from Tambopata National Reserve (Adenomera Forest Call I) and to a confirmed candidate species (Adenomera sp. E) in the most recently published phylogeny for the genus. The new species is distinguished from all 19 described congeners by its unique advertisement call, consisting of a single multipulsed note, formed by 22-35 partly fused pulses (greatest pulse number recorded for the genus among species with partly fused notes). The new species is further distinguished from most congeners in having toe tips expanded into small discs. Its distribution is associated with the Amazonian region encompassing western Brazil (state of Acre), southeastern Peru, and north-central Bolivia. Methods: Specimens of R. stali were collected by the Federal University of Acre in Rio Branco. Results: The number of Triatominae species in the State of Acre increased from five to six. This was also the first report of R. stali in the Brazilian Amazon. Conclusions: The occurrence of R. stali is worrisome, since this species has been found naturally infected by Trypanosoma cruzi and there has been evidence of its domiciliation capabilities. METHODS: We evaluated 37,504 adolescents who were participants in the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA), a cross-sectional, school-based, national study. The adolescents, aged from 12 to 17 years, lived in cities with populations greater than 100,000 inhabitants. The sample was stratified and clustered into schools and classes. The criteria set out by the International Diabetes Federation were used to define metabolic syndrome. Prevalences of metabolic syndrome were estimated according to sex, age group, school type and nutritional status. RESULTS: Of the 37,504 adolescents who were evaluated: 50.2% were female; 54.3% were aged from 15 to 17 years, and 73.3% were from public schools. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 2.6% (95% CI 2.3-2.9), slightly higher in males and in those aged from 15 to 17 years in most macro-regions. The prevalence was the highest in residents from the South macro-region, in the younger female adolescents and in the older male adolescents. The prevalence was higher in public schools (2.8% [95% CI 2.4-3.2]), when compared with private schools (1.9% [95% CI 1.4-2.4]) and higher in obese adolescents when compared with nonobese ones. The most common combinations of components, referring to 3/4 of combinations, were: enlarged waist circumference (WC), low HDL-cholesterol (HDL-c) and high blood pressure; followed by enlarged WC, low HDL-c and high triglycerides; and enlarged WC, low HDL-c, high triglycerides and blood pressure. Low HDL was the second most frequent component, but the highest prevalence of metabolic syndrome (26.8%) was observed in the presence of high triglycerides. CONCLUSIONS: ERICA is the first Brazilian nation-wide study to present the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and describe the role of its components. Despite the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome being low, the high prevalences of some components and participation of others in the syndrome composition shows the importance of early diagnosis of this changes, even if not grouped within the metabolic syndrome. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) We report a cytogenetic analysis of three Pristimantis fenestratus frog populations of the Amazon region in Brazil. the specimens were sampled in Borba and Manaus, Amazonas State, and in Rio Branco, Acre State. They were analyzed using Giemsa, silver staining, C-banding and FISH with rDNA probes. the karyotypes of the three populations revealed 2n = 34 chromosomes, but they differed in the number and position of Ag-NORs and in the heterochromatin pattern as well. the NOR was located on the pairs 05 and 07 in the Rio Branco specimens, pair 10 in the Manaus specimens, and pair 1 in the Borba specimens. A small C-band was detected on the telomeric region of the pair 05 in the Borba population, while in the Manaus there was a heterochromatic block adjacent to the centromere of pair 9. An unusual intra-individual variation of chromosome number was observed in metaphases of Rio Branco specimens, comprising fundamental numbers of 33, 34 and 35. Additionally, interchromosome thread connections were detected between telomere - telomere, centromere - telomere and centromere - centromere regions, and among chromosomal heterochromatin-rich sites. the NOR sites were also involved in those connections. We hypothesize that this variation is due to chromosome missegregation during mitosis. the inter- and intraindividual variation in chromosome number suggests chromosomal instability in P. fenestratus, which has not been detected in any other anuran group. Since Borba is the type-locality of P. fenestratus, a taxonomic review of the Manaus and Rio Branco populations should be done, as indicated by the cytogenetic evidence that they could be new species of Pristimantis. Methods: Two female R. montenegrensis were collected in a dwelling in the rural area of Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil. Results: The occurrence of this species was confirmed, and the number of Triatominae species in the State of Acre increased from four to five. Conclusions: Further studies should be performed to reach a clearer understanding of the ecology of this arthropod, its possible role in transmitting Chagas' disease and rangeliosis, and its current geographical distribution in the region.
