The aim of this article is to highlight the effects of chicken dumping trade on South African local commercial chicken farming industry. The high cost of farming in South African has risen and this has created a fertile ground for overseas countries where chicken production costs are low to intensify their exports to South Africa for their excess chicken products at a lower price. South African chicken farmers are already facing domestic challenges which includes high-cost feed, high cost of importing chicken lines and resources to produce the meat chicken. A local single fertilised Ross 308 / Cobb 500 Fertile egg cost at least R2.50 ($0.12), whereas international, local breeders source these genetic lines at over a $1 an egg. Locally, there is persistent drought, chicken diseases, high electricity cost and electricity shortages (load shedding). These challenges inevitably raise costs of chicken production in South Africa whereas the US, Brazil and EU countries farming industries are highly subsidised and experience no high electricity costs or load shedding. In perspective, imported chicken from Brazil cost R9 per kg as compared to locally produced chicken at R25 per kg. To mitigate the chicken dumping trade, the South African government imposed legally sound chicken import tariffs of up to 62 %, however in August of 2022, the government suspended these tariffs due to rising food costs in the hope that the cheap dumped chicken would provide a relief to the financially stressed consumers. This move has raffled feathers within the local chicken farming sector which is struggling to sustain their farms due to stiff competition with the low-priced chicken, predominantly from Brazil and the US. More chicken farms in South Africa are shedding jobs. As of 2023, the poultry industry in South Africa employs an estimated total of 70,000 people, and others are questioning the sustainability of their enterprises going forward if the chicken dumping in the country is not controlled via stringent legislation that include appropriate dumping tariffs. This article suggests that both the chicken farming industry, the chicken importers and the government should hold regular dialogs to get common ground before the majority of local chicken farmers close shops due to chicken dumping. The regular engagements between the government and the chicken industry could avoid seemingly unilateral suspension of import tariffs. Subsidies that could absorb some of the operation cost, as is the case with US or Brazilian farmers should be introduced. Abstract

Koalas are one of the most globally recognized conservation species. With populations rapidly declining in core forest habitats in northern New South Wales, pressure has mounted on successive governments to create a regionwide park to protect this population from further decline. Establishing a conservation-effective national park at a landscape level in a highly fragmented area with high pressure from alternative land uses, such as forestry, agriculture, and urban development, presents considerable challenges in design. The authors explore how the exclusion of prime koala habitat from the proposed park for logging is inconsistent with koala protection, which needs to consider the integrity of the broader reserve system and be accorded the requisite status of World Heritage. A commentary on the implications from the social quality perspective is provided. Avian species were historically thought to have a very limited sense of smell. However, recent studies suggest that odor plays an important role in many areas of avian life, including foraging and navigation. It has been shown that insectivorous birds can interact in a tritrophic fashion with plants and their herbivores by cuing in on herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs), important signaling compounds released by plants in response to herbivorous damage. This phenomenon has been observed in a number of plant species, including complex HIPV blends in com (Zea mays). However, in other species, simpler single-compound HIPVs can act as phytohormones, causing the release of additional HIPVs, and have also been shown to be attractive to birds. Here we test if 2 single-compound general HIPVs, methyl jasmonate and methyl salicylate, attract avian predators to insect prey on com plants using clay caterpillar models. We observed appreciable levels of bird attacks on our models across 10 experimental sites. However, we did not observe any difference between HIPV and control treatments. Interestingly, we did find that several weather variables, including wind speed and temperature, were significant or near significant predictors of avian predation activity, respectively. Together with previous studies, our results add to a nuanced picture of how birds may be using HIPVs to locate insect prey. Additionally, the potential for birds to act as a natural form of biocontrol in agricultural settings may be affected by physical location and local climate. Ce phenomene a etc observe chez plusieurs especes vegetales, comme le mais (Zea mays) et ses melanges complexes d'HIPV. Chez d'autres especes, les HIPV plus simples et mono-composes peuvent agir comme des phytohormones, provoquant l'emission d'autres HIPV, qui se sont egalement averes attrayants pour les oiseaux. Ici, nous testons si deux HIPV a un seul compose, le jasmonate de methyle et le salicylate de methyle, attirent les predateurs aviaires vers les insectes proies sur les plants de mais en utilisant des modeles de chenilles en argile. Nous observames des niveaux appreciates d'attaques d'oiseaux sur nos modeles dans dix sites experimentaux. Cependant, nous ne trouvames aucune difference entre les traitements d'HIPV et les temoins. Il est interessant de noter que nous constatames que plusieurs variables meteorologiques, notamment la vitesse du vent et la temperature, etaient des predicteurs significatifs ou presque significatifs de l'activite de predation aviaire, respectivement. Nos resultats, combines a des etudes precedentes, decrivent comment les oiseaux peuvent utiliser les HIPV pour localiser les proies d'insectes. De plus, le potentiel des oiseaux a agir comme une forme naturelle de lutte biologique dans les milieux agricoles peut etre affecte par l'environnement physique et le climat local.
