The US Holocaust Memorial Museum, opened Apr 1993, takes visitors through the experiences of the victims of the Holocaust in Apr 1945. The exhibits include memorabilia, a train for transporting prisoners and replicas of prison facilities. Architect James Ingo Freed designed the museum.

The world's response to the Nazi holocaust was inadequate and the museum exhibits warn of the dangers posed by extreme rightist movements in the post cold war era. Some have criticized the museum for focusing on the suffering of the Jews alone and for reviving painful memories which ought to remain buried in the past.
